A mixed time of it last weekend, with Leicester getting the result against Plymouth but Villa, my pick of the day, only managing to draw at Turf Moor. I still think that bet represented good value, though at the end of the day a losing bet is a losing bet!

We’ve got a cracking weekend of football ahead – Sunday especially, with Everton/Liverpool, Chelsea/Arsenal and Barca/Madrid gracing our screens. None of those showpiece games represent great betting opportunities, though there are worse picks out there than the 14-5 available on Everton to beat hapless Liverpool at Goodison.

The pick of the weekend for me is Fulham to beat Bolton at Craven Cottage, currently 10-11 on Betfair. Fulham are playing really well at the moment and dismantled Blackburn midweek. Bolton, on the flip side, are having a mare, and I can’t see them getting back on track here.

A similar pick in the Championship, with Newcastle also 10-11 on Betfair to see off Swansea. I’ve been mightily impressed with the Toon this season, having written them off in a big way in the summer. To be fair, I thought they would lose far more players than they have done but, even still, they are doing remarkably well and are good value for the win here.

Selections:
Fulham to beat Bolton, 1.9 Betfair, 3 points
Newcastle to beat Swansea, 1.91 Betfair, 3 points

Weekend long-odds multiple:
Fulham, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, Bristol City, QPR, MK Dons, 37-1 Betfair

The Wall That Is Brede Hangeland i midterforsvaret.

"We are Fulham"

Kamp Stats

There are some good games on tap this weekend. The biggest one is probably the Arsenal/Chelsea match Sunday afternoon. Both squads have been playing well and winning. Arsenal is eight points back from first place Chelsea, but is definitely capable of knocking off the leaders. On Saturday, fourth place Tottenham plays away to fifth place Aston Villa in a game that could have major top four implications. And of course, there’s the Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton, which is always a hard fought match.

“I am delighted to have just signed a new deal and hope that this will now end months of speculation about my future.I have always maintained that I am happy at Fulham and committed to doing everything I can to ensure ongoing success of the team.

It’s great to see that the club has made great progress since I first joined in January 2008 which has seen the highest ever finish for the team in the club’s 130-year history at the end of last season.

This is a testament to everyone involved at the club including the manager and chairman who is dedicated to the club.”

Its good to be a Fulham-fan!

This time last year I was invited to a fantastic party at the Alpha Romeo Showrooms in Parsons Green. We ate, drank and got merry, all in aid of raising money for Kids Company.

In July this year, I somehow found myself agreeing to be on the organising committee for this year’s party, after being approached by Jonathan Silver, the man behind the original launch of the event 4 years before . The event has gone from a small gathering of friends in his house, to a fabulous party in a great venue that attracted over 200 people. Each year a different charity is chosen and this year it was Chase Children’s Hospice, a wonderful charity that supports terminally ill children and their families.

There were eight of us on the organising committee this year, who lived all over London and the South East. The four months in the run up to the event (in between being a mum, business mum …) involved approaching people asking for their support and donations of food and drink. Calls, letters and visits made during my toddler’s nap times, or with pram in tow.

The amazing thing about this event is that absolutely everything is donated each year, our time; food and drink; entertainment; stage; lighting and auction and raffle prizes. There was a suggested donation of £50 per person. Not a bad price to pay for a brilliant night out.

November 14, the day of the party soon arrived. Minor panics were thankfully resolved, including having to find somewhere to hire 1,000 glasses (we nearly ended up with paper cups, but a couple of trips to Waitrose stores nearby meant a crisis was averted – and it was free).

It was incredible how the event came together on the night, largely due to everyone’s hard work. Entertainment included a magician, compere James Mullinger, Comedian Caroline Maybey and the absolutely brilliant BB Collective (a soul, mowton, funk and pop cover band – and probably the best I’ve ever seen). Tempting treats including getting a back and shoulder massage, having your portrait photo taken (for a small fee of course). There was also an auction, with five holidays and raffle. You can see the photos here.

The end result, there were over 250 guests and we should raise an amazing £35,000. It was fun being an organiser, but I’m now looking forward to getting my life back!

Blackburn vs. Stoke City: Stoke have been really solid in the back this season and I don’t see

Blackburn vs. Stoke City:
Stoke have been really solid in the back this season and I don’t seen them letting in a goal against a Blackburn side that is struggling for goals. Stoke have been solid on set plays or throw-ins with the weapon in Delap, expect a goal in a situation like that to decide the game.

Prediction: 0-1

—————

Fulham vs. Bolton:
The Cottagers have been really solid at home all season and are coming off a big win at Blackburn midweek.

Bolton are struggling, taking only six points from their last six fixtures. Dempsey is in form and should be good for a goal or assist.

Prediction: 2-0

—————

Man City vs. Hull City:
City are coming off a disappointing draw at Anfield last week and have drawn their last six matches. Hull are playing away from the safety of their home grounds and that doesn’t bode well for them.

Robinho is back from injury for City and will give them an extra scoring threat.

Prediction: 2-1

—————

Portsmouth vs. Manchester United:
With Portsmouth losing their manager this week and the inevitable appointment of Avram Grant, they’ll look to stop their recent skid of losses. But against a high powered Man United, I don’t think they will find their feet quickly enough.

Prediction: 0-3

—————

West Ham vs. Burnley:
The Hammers need some points and quickly to get themselves out of the bottom of the league. Burnley have been poor away from home and a game that West Ham should win.

Prediction: 1-0

—————

Wigan vs. Sunderland:
Wigan got thrashed last week at Spurs and will want to prove a point this week when their old manager Steve Bruce makes a trip back to the JJB.

I don’t see them bouncing back quite yet. Sunderland have been solid and have goal threats like Darren Bent and Jones.

Prediction: 0-1

—————

Aston Villa vs. Tottenham:

Match of the wannabes.

Aston Villa are coming of a disappointing draw last week against Burnley and Spurs are coming off a thrashing of Wigan. Aston Villa are at home and would normally give the edge to them, but Spurs are playing really good football right now.

Prediction: 2-2

—————

Wolves vs Birmingham:
Wolves will continue to fight relegation. They got beaten badly by Chelsea last week and Birmingham are coming a string of a few good results after their recent ownership change.

Prediction: 0-1

—————

Everton vs. Liverpool:
The Merseyside derby is always a good battle and I don’t anticipate this to be any different.

Liverpool will probably still be without Torres and are in a bad run of form, but grabbed a win midweek in the Champions League where they bowed out. Expect a goal from Gerrard and some sort of controversy. Besides the Arsenal-Chelsea clash, this should be one of the matches of the weekend.

Prediction: 1-2

—————

Arsenal vs. Chelsea:
Match of the weekend.

Gunners need a win to pull themselves closer to the top of the league. Both had wins midweek in the Champions League. Chelsea are in the middle of a stretch of tough away matches and Arsenal are facing a few major injuries, notablyVan Persie.

Prediction: 3-2

A well received victory by the Fulham faithful. It is interesting that we cannot play 90 mins of goo

A well received victory by the Fulham faithful. It is interesting that we cannot play 90 mins of good football this season. For the first 44 minutes it was all Blackburn, out hustling Fulham to every ball, passing with determination and creating all of the chances. Not that they created many of quality. It could have been so different had Franco di Santo knocked the ball past Schwarzer in the 3rd minute, but a solid block and good covering from Aaron Hughes prevented any damage being done.

Fulham looked lost for the half, the midfield swamped, the fullbacks pinned back and the enigmatic Clint Dempsey pulling an invisible man. But with Blackburn asking all of the questions but failing to find any answers, an excellent and decisive Fulham counter attack, started and finished by Norwegians, put us ahead on the stroke of half time. Brilliant one touch football reminiscent of the counter attack goal against stoke last year had proven successful. Fulham didnt deserve it, but they would certainly take it.

The second half was a completely different kettle of fish. Fulham passed the ball beautifully and with new found confidence, the excellent Baird patrolling the centre of the pitch, Duff starting to threaten. When Zamora was brought off due to injury and Dempsey moved up front, however, there was a question lingering over the effectiveness of the front line against a burly Blackburn defence. But the answer for the brawn of Blackburn was the brain of Fulham, invigorated by the grand wizard of footballing intellectualism himself Roy Hodgson at the half. Fulham looked lively up front and it wasn’t long before Fulham scored again. Duff cut inside onto his left, curling the ball into the area for an instinctive dempsey to pounce on and fire into the net. Game over.

Nevland then missed when it was easier to score, after good interplay with Dempsey but the game was rounded out in style with 3 minutes remaining. A good run by Simon Davies was rewarded with a slide rule pass by Paintsil. Davies then crossed low to Dempsey who turned his marked and fired home. If after 44 minutes you had told someone that Fulham would win 3-0 after dominating the second half you would have been laughed at, but thats football I suppose.

There were many interesting side stories to the match. Firstly, I am not sure where Dempsey plays best. As Rich has pointed out over at Craven Cottage Newsround, Dempsey scores his goals from close range. He is incredibly composed in front of goal for a midfielder, instead acting more like a poacher a la Nevland. His turn up front was excellent and Fulham looked dangerous. This is good news and gives us yet another option to mix things up and possibly more of a replacement for Bobby if he gets injured.

Secondly, Nevland and Dempsey have struck up quite the partnership. Against Liverpool (I Know it was only against 9 men) they combined well for a late goal, and against Blackburn they seemed to form a fairly natural partnership. Maybe this is Nevlands best partner.

Thirdly, we are not a long ball team. It may be obvious, but someone needed to tell the team in the first half. Last season against Blackburn, Fulham played the second half ‘Blackburns way’ and ended up capitulating. Almost the opposite this time out, lets hope this is kept up for Bolton at the weekend.

I’ve managed to start my Christmas shopping in November, which is impeccably organised for me.

I’ve managed to start my Christmas shopping in November, which is impeccably organised for me. After mooching in bookshops in Fulham, I headed to Shepherd’s Bush and the delights of Westfield. I bought some things for my parents, and cards to thank friends for the lovely weekend. I also tried on some coats, including a lovely Betty Jackson one.

I caught the bus from the shopping centre. The top deck was packed with schoolchildren on their way home, which was a revelation. I’ve got a week’s annual leave (brilliant!) but it’s amazing how quickly one forgets that others are still going about their usual routine. The growing darkness outside made me assume that everyone was home from school. Of course they’re not, and they’re standing in the stairwell of the bus where they shouldn’t be, and shouting across the top deck and eating smelly chips and texting their mates. And the feisty girls are shouting back at the boys on the seats behind. Way to go. Noisy, alive and fearless. And not full of the harm that we like to imagine.

The bus across this area is the way to go. On the Hammersmith and City Line of the Tube, you just get flat slabs of warehouse West London land across Royal Oak and Latimer Road stations. The bus always reveals more.

I really must make a decision on the winter coat, though. The weather really is decidedly nippy now.

Tottenham’s staggering 9-1 win over Wigan at the weekend saw a number of records either broke

Tottenham’s staggering 9-1 win over Wigan at the weekend saw a number of records either broken or equalled. As well as being Spurs’ biggest top-flight win, Sunday’s one-sided clash at White Hart Lane also saw Harry Redknapp’s side become the second Barclays Premier League team to hit nine in one match. Jermain Defoe matched Andy Cole and Alan Shearer’s record of five individual goals in one Premier League fixture, while Wigan’s Paul Scharner got in on the act by claiming the ‘Thierry Henry slam-dunk of the week award’ as he claimed the Latics’ solitary goal.

Unsurprisingly, Defoe’s five-star performance helped him to earn the highest Actim Index score of the season, a sensational 87 points. The England striker’s mammoth score eclipsed that of Tottenham team-mate Robbie Keane, who held the previous highest total of 80 after scoring four against Burnley. Another Spurs star, Aaron Lennon, picked up 60 points this week to move back into the Team of the Season.

Despite the efforts of Wigan, Spurs do not have the highest number of players in the Team of the Week. That honour goes to London rivals Chelsea, who strolled to a 4-0 victory over struggling Wolves at Stamford Bridge. French winger Florent Malouda grabbed the Blues’ opening goal and picked up a healthy 39 points, while fellow goalscorers Michael Essien and Joe Cole also eclipsed the 30-point mark to book their place among the week’s top scorers.

Stoke’s televised victory over bottom club Portsmouth could politely be described as one for the purists. However, although entertainment was in short supply in a dire clash at the Britannia Stadium, the Potters can claim two of the week’s 20 highest scorers. Jamaica forward Ricardo Fuller grabbed the only goal of the game with 16 minutes remaining and earned 32 points, while Dean Whitehead claimed 26 points for his efforts in midfield. Stoke’s highest-scoring player remains highly-rated defender Ryan Shawcross. The giant 22-year-old, who captained the club for the first time at the weekend in the absence of the suspended Abdoulaye Faye, is in 44th position overall with 159 points.

Didier Drogba may not have featured for Chelsea this weekend due to injury, but the Ivory Coast striker has still moved to the top of the overall Actim standings after Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas endured a torrid time in his side’s clash with Sunderland. Fabregas led Drogba by two points ahead of the Gunners’ trip to the Stadium of Light and was expected to extend his lead at the Actim summit. However, the Spaniard went on to record a miserable score of -4 as Arsene Wenger’s side slumped to a 1-0 defeat, putting Drogba back on top. Arsenal forward Robin van Persie was another to miss the latest round of Premier League fixtures through injury and he has slipped from third to fifth in the overall standings as a result.

Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher has come in for significant praise in recent months, with many observers highlighting his importance to Sir Alex Ferguson’s side. And the 25-year-old Scot made another fine contribution as United eased to a 3-0 victory over Everton, opening the scoring with a sublime half-volley. Fletcher’s 29-point total sees him leap from 79th to 45th in the overall standings, making him United’s fourth highest-scoring player of the season.

Birmingham goalkeeper Joe Hart insists he still believes he can break into England’s squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. And the 22-year-old stopper, on loan at St Andrews from Manchester City, did his chances no harm with a fine performance in Birmingham’s 1-0 win over Fulham at the weekend. Hart picked up 21 points for his efforts – the highest score by a goalkeeper this week – and will hope to maintain his good form as the season progresses.

After another international break, the Premier League is back in action this weekend. The injured stars of Liverpool will also be back on the pitch this weekend (thank goodness). The injured Reds were: Steven Gerrard, David Ngog, Daniel Agger, Glen Johnson, Fabio Aurelio, Albert Riera, Fernando Torres and Yossi Benayoun. Torres is the only one still out, so yay for that international break. Man City is one point up on Liverpool in the table, so it’s a must-win game for Liverpool if they want to work their way back into the top four. The Reds have only won one game since Sept. 26 so they need to start winning now to get things back on track.
