“Infidels! Terrorists! Extremists!” These are the words being spewed from men and women alike, claiming to believe in God, claiming to live by the guidance set forth by God. How can any of us call ourselves children of God if all we do is try to claim our superiority over others. Does our religion really make us that much better? Does the brand of our religion really make us any different from the next person? No one has the right to judge anyone’s ability to gain entrance into a heaven they cannot even begin to understand? Is it not God who shall judge each individual, and God alone? if God is the only judge, then what does it matter to you, that another person should choose another path? Are you afraid their path is better? Perhaps you are both lost, or perhaps you are both right? How do you know?

You may claim that the Bible tells you what is the truth, or that the Quran, or the Torah tells you the truth, but what of their authors? Would you trust your soul to a person who is long gone? Some would say that those who have written such texts were guided by God, but who are you really trusting? Are you trusting your priest, the imam, rabbi, or even your parents? Are they not all human, fallible in every way? If God can guide them, who is to say He cannot also guide you? Can we not all look to God for guidance directly? Man would have others come to him for he sees nothing but himself. Seek not in others what you can seek in yourself.

“Fundamentalists’ Wet Dream” by Kavita Ramdya in “The Indian America” magazine (September/October 2009)

I’m always torn between two emotions, amusement and horror, when I read stories like a recent one reported by BBC News’s Arab Affairs analyst Magdi Abdelhadi, “Egypt anger over virginity faking” (September 28^th, 2009). In Abdelhadi’s article, she reports how leading Egyptian scholar Abdul Mouti Bayoumi from al-Azhar University argues “that people caught importing a female virginity-faking device into the country should face the death penalty.” According to Islamic Sharia law, any item which facilitates the spread of vice is punishable by death. In this specific instance, the “instrument of Evil” is the Artificial Virginity Hymen kit, a contraption which releases liquid meant to appear as blood from a freshly-penetrated hymen. The contraption is a safer and less costly alternative to hymen repair surgery, an operation performed in clinics throughout the Middle East. Bayoumi claims that this contraption’s introduction into Egyptian society will facilitate the spread of promiscuity. A prominent member of the Egyptian Parliament’s committee on religious affairs, Sheik Sayed Askar, was more specific, focusing on the fact that the kit would enable women to lead more sexually-active lives.

One need not look too long to find recent instances where female virginity is the central focus in a religious community erring towards fundamentalism. Even in India’s Madhya Pradesh, from which my family originates, the Bharatiya Janata Party-governed state has recently demonstrated its own socially-conservative philosophy with regards to tribal women. BBC News’s Delhi correspondent Faisal Mohammad Ali reports in “India ‘virgin test’ claim dropped” (July 21, 2009) how brides-to-be were interrogated with regards to whether they were pregnant or not prior to participating in a mass wedding. While the doctor did not give an invasive internal exam, she did ask questions in order to ascertain whether the 150 tribal women were chaste prior to marrying.

These two instances where women are the object of conservative religious attitudes are symptoms of a society enabling the proliferation of extremist views. And all too often, the women pay the toll. So when I support the United States’ military presence in countries beset by Islamist insurgencies such as Afghanistan, I am conscious that if the US were to prematurely pull out, the consequences for Afghani women at the hands of the Taliban are beyond what our overly-protected western imaginations are capable of imagining.

Terrorism is not cordoned off in the Muslim world as demonstrated by Al Qaeda’s attack on the World Trade Center and Lashkar-e-Taiba’s November 2008 attack in Mumbai. “New Yorker” reporter George Packer, in his profile of Special Representative Richard Holbrooke, describes him as championing Hillary Clinton’s suggestion to tap into the educated, skilled Pakistan-American community to provide services and help to Pakistani refugees who are victims of Al Qaeda’s politics and fear mongering.  And what of Indian Americans assisting where they can in Kashmir? Rather than seek the help and support of our vast Indian-American physicians community, the Delhi-based Indian government has decided to shield itself from being categorized with Afghanistan and Pakistan as another state under widespread terrorist threat.

And what are the consequences of the politics of religious fundamentalism and terrorism for women in the Middle East, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India? The consequences are inclusive but not limited to the following: paralysis of women to demonstrate leadership in their communities, the inability to meet their own and their families’ health and dietary needs, and immobility in the face of brutal terrorist regimes.

The examples of the virginity contraption in Egypt and the mass interrogation in India are symptomatic and symbolic of that which is at the base of fundamentalist attitudes towards women. I argue that Bayoumi, the Egyptian scholar, is not fearful of increased promiscuity; instead, he is threatened by women armed with knowledge. It is no coincidence that the verb “to know” is a euphemism for sexual intercourse dating back to biblical times. “To know” another individual is to have carnal knowledge, a powerful and equalizing force between men and women. Sex is the method with which to transmit knowledge. Sex does not require libraries or textbooks, PCs or Macs, pipettes or microscopes.  Thus, placing women’s virginity on a pedestal is a way for fundamentalists to wield an invisible power over women without the use of a spade or a gun. Spreading propaganda about preserving women’s virginity is a bloodless method with which to restrict women’s participation in the adult community, their self-expression and access to education. Virginity propaganda is one step towards sacrificing women’s education all together and threatening their civil rights. Ensuring women remain virgins is all too often dependent on structuring society to ensure the segregation of women from men, automatically limiting women’s access to and quality of education.

The connection between knowledge and women’s purity is one embedded in the dominant Christian-Judaic-Islamist Book of Genesis. In the Old Testament, G-d forbids Adam from eating from the Garden of Eden’s “tree of the knowledge of good and evil… for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die” (2:2:17). Later, the serpent tempts Eve to indulge in the fruit of the tree of knowledge by telling her that when she eats from it, “your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil” (2:3:5). Eve is tellingly more curious than Adam for she falls prey to the serpent, not Adam. She is hungry, literally and intellectually, and believes that that which makes “one wise” is good (2:3:6). G-d banishes Adam and Eve from the garden from which they spent their early days cavorting in naked oblivion, innocent of their nudity. And it is only when they shed their child-like innocence that they act as adults, “knowing” one another as husband and wife, and begetting Abel and Cain.

So at the foundation of the Abrahamic religions (Christianity, Judaism and Islam) is a story which illuminates the treatment of women in fundamentally religious communities, particularly locations where terrorists are harboured. Groups like Al Qaeda fly in the face of world security and the preservation of peace. However, terrorist networks also play an insidious role in tearing apart the fabric of local communities by threatening and ignoring women’s civil rights, seeing women as either merely vessels for child bearing or ingénue virgins ripe for picking.

While Psalm 109:8 itself simply states: “May his days be few; may another take his place of leadership.”  Some are actually noticing the next line, which calls for this leader to leave his children fatherless and his wife a widow, which is sort of tough to miss.  The passage is a prayer to God to strike down an unjust ruler, and at this rate, were anything ever to happen to the President, you have to wonder if the religious right-wing would not be dancing for joy like some of the Muslims did (and were caught on camera) as they celebrated the 9/11 attacks in some regions of the middle east.

The right-wing will no doubt snicker and laugh as they proclaim themselves to be innocent, pointing out that the verse they specified just means that they want Joe Biden to be President, something I do not think they have thought through very well and that really isn’t much of a surprise.

You have to ask yourself what they reaction would have been if T-shirts like this were printed up during the former President’s tenure.  For all the right-wing crying, saying that the left wanted harm to come to President Bush, for some reason I don’t think shirts like this were printed.  Actually calling on God to dispose of a leader that they do not like, that is pretty f**king sick.

Well, not for the Christian Taliban of course.

A fellow goes to a science fiction convention and gets drunk in the con-suite partaking of Romulan ale and a Pan-galactic gargleblaster, leaning a little too far back from an open window ten stories up, and lands on his head. He wakes up, apparently unharmed in a dark place that’s a little too warm for comfort, with a slight whiff of sulfur in the air. A large being with horns, a pitchfork and bat wings stands over him and says,

‘Please come with me, I’ll be taking you to your cell, where you will be spending a very long time…eternity to be exact.’

At first thinking the being to be a sort of capriform humanoid on an alien planet, and wondering how he got there, the late convention attendee recognizes it as a demon, a rather urbane one at that, who shows him the sights on the way to his cell.

He sees circles of Hell where people are burning in lakes of fire, circles where people are encased in ice, trapped in red-hot iron coffins and suchforth, but just before he reaches his destination, he sees a group of souls wailing and screaming, moaning and crying, dressed all in fine ‘Sunday best’ clothing but oddly enough not suffering from any obvious source of physical pain, so he asks the demon, motioning toward them with a nod, who they are and what they’ve done, and the demon responds,

‘Those, Sir, would be religious fundamentalists, and I believe they’re here because God hates to be told what he thinks…’

American women will pay the price for the Democratic dithering that allowed Saturday’s passage of the Stupak-Pitts amendment, a worm virus inserted into the House healthcare reform bill with surgical precision. But the Democratic Party will suffer collateral damage.

Stupak-Pitts isn’t just “the biggest restriction on women’s right to choose in our generation,” as Rep. Diana DeGette of Colorado puts it; it’s also evidence that on abortion the Democratic Party is now captive, just like the GOP, to Christian conservatism. Of course, Republicans traded away their party’s moderate wing for real electoral gains, a base that propelled them to power for decades. The Democrats, already in power, sucker-punched themselves, and all they have to show for it is a big fat shiner in the shape of Bart Stupak’s knuckles.

But if Stupak, a former state trooper from Michigan, provided the muscle, his partner, Joe Pitts — a Pennsylvania Republican with decades in the trenches of the antiabortion battle — may have brought the brains, and more, a new Christian right coalition custom tailored for the Democratic Party’s growing religious conservatism. Stupak is Roman Catholic; Pitts is evangelical. Both are members of the predominantly evangelical organization called the Family; Stupak lives in its C Street house. Together, they’re poster boys for the evangelical/conservative Catholic alliance known as “co-belligerency,” a culture war strategy designed to take territory within the Democratic Party as well the GOP.

Stupak, the Democratic co-chair of the House Pro-Life Caucus, insists that his amendment does nothing more than ensure that the 1976 Hyde Amendment, which forbids the use of federal funds for abortions, is carried over into healthcare reform.  [...] But the facts are plain: Stupak-Pitts will use the Hyde Amendment as a lever with which to radically roll back abortion rights, effectively strong-arming private insurers — most of which will be enmeshed with the federal government now — into abandoning coverage for abortions.

Much is being made in the media about the role played by the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops, which lobbied hard for the amendment. “We just have to accept this as a Catholic thing,” goes the new conventional wisdom. Leaving aside the fact that a strong majority of American Catholics are pro-choice [...]

Start with Stupak and Pitts themselves. Although Stupak is a Catholic, he’s lived since at least 2002 in the C Street house run by the Family, which cultivates political leaders on behalf of a long-term vision of what Joe Pitts, speaking at last year’s National Prayer Breakfast (the group’s only public event), called “God-led government.” After the summer sex scandals of Sen. John Ensign, Gov. Mark Sanford and former Rep. Chip Pickering, C Streeters all, made the Capitol Hill address infamous, Stupak denied any knowledge about the house he lives in.

In its internal documents, the Family refers to itself as an “invisible organization” and the “prayer cells” into which it organizes politicians as “invisible ‘believing groups.’” [...] Longtime Family leader Doug Coe, dubbed the “stealth persuader” on Time magazine’s list of the 25 most influential evangelicals, declares in a sermon delivered to evangelical leaders that “the more invisible you can make your organization, the more influence it will have.”

Joe Pitts can testify to that. It’s a safe bet that until Stupak-Pitts, few Americans beyond Pennsylvania Amish country had even heard of the avuncular Republican, a former gym teacher who rarely attaches his name to legislation. And yet he’s been a driving force in the antiabortion fight for more than three decades. It was Pitts, a “core” member of the Family, who helped bring antiabortion politics into the organization back in the early 1980s. [...] Pitts and Stupak have joined forces on that front before, teaming up to try to turn President Bush’s underfunded but laudable President’s Emergency Relief for AIDS initiative into an antiabortion crusade. What they couldn’t achieve abroad, they’ve now brought back home, and then some.

They had plenty of help, starting at the Family’s C Street House. It’s home not just to Stupak but also to antiabortion Democrats Mike Doyle of Pennsylvania and Heath Shuler of North Carolina, and two of the Senate’s fiercest abortion foes, Oklahoma’s Tom Coburn — an obstetrician who once mused on applying the death penalty to abortion providers — and South Carolina’s Jim DeMint, famous for pledging to make healthcare reform Obama’s Waterloo. Other Family associates lining up behind Stupak-Pitts include evangelicals Mike McIntyre, D-N.C., John Tanner, D-Tenn., and Lincoln Davis, a Democrat from Tennessee who once proclaimed that no Republican could “outgun, out-pray, or out-family me.”

These Family ties don’t mean that Stupak-Pitts is a plot hatched at C Street. [... The] Family’s prayer groups don’t take direct action but rather facilitate the behind-the-scenes relationships that lead to action. “One person grows desirous of pursuing an action,” Sen. Sam Brownback, a Family man and former C Street resident, explained the process to me, “and others pull in behind.”

Which raises the question: Who’s pulling whom? Did backbencher Bart Stupak really come up with the bluff that led pro-choice Democrats to abandon not one but two compromises, one of which Stupak himself seemed to be signing off on earlier this summer? Or was it Pitts, an abortion-wars warrior since the 1970s, and a longtime leader of the House Values Action Team — an off-the-record caucus of religious right organizations and members of Congress — who drew up the blueprint?

Neither Stupak nor Pitts is talking. Of course, if they just keep quiet, the press will pin it on the bishops — who, to be fair, are more than happy to take credit. That version of events neglects the role of relationships forged within the evangelical context of the Family — a group founded in the spirit of virulent anti-Catholicism, and which maintains to this day that being Catholic brings you no closer to Christ than being Jewish or a Muslim — and the growing evangelical movement within the Democratic Party.

Right now, even the diluted healthcare reform bill that’s limping toward more mauling in the Senate looks like the result of a historic vote. But as a weather vane, Stupak-Pitts tells us which way the wind is blowing. Last time the Democrats possessed this much power in Washington, the Dixiecrats tried to hold the party hostage. Now, it’s the faith-based Democrats. Dixiecrats were racists, plain and simple; the faith-based Democrats are a more complicated bunch, a mix of genuinely moral conservatives, many of them to the left on economic issues, political cowards, and default Blue Dogs. They’re anti-choice and anti-gay but, by God, they’re about love, not hate, a gentler fundamentalism, a faith based in the conflation of Christianity and the Constitution, not the substitution of one for the other. So that’s progress, right?

According to George W. Bush, we are fighting in Iraq to “secure the peace” and, to “secure freedom and democracy”.  Is there any historical or other rational reason to believe this?  If war can secure peace then why, after 10,000 years of war, isn’t there peace on earth by now?

War didn’t begin with the American Revolution, nor did it end there; many soldiers who fought against the British rose up in “Shay’s Rebellion” against wealthy colonists who were taking their land and throwing them into debtors prison.  Soon after, another war against the British erupted.

Then came the Mexican-American War, Civil War, Spanish-American War and War in the Philippines.  And then, the so-called “war to end all wars”, WWI, soon followed by WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War and now, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Spaced among this long sad bloody list of war after war after war, were several slave uprisings, a long drawn-out war against Native populations and many smaller wars and battles.  There have also been many “uprisings” within the U.S. population, including mob murder of African-Americans, Irish, Jews, Mormons, Chinese, Latinos, adult and even, child workers on strike.

Yet today, after all this bloodshed, we find ourselves at war, yet again.  In spite of the overwhelming historical evidence, a morally bankrupt American population remains quick on the trigger and very slow to understand, that war will never “secure the peace”.  Is President Obama acting any wiser than Bush by continuing to stay the course in Iraq and increase troop levels in Afghanistan?

Some people claim Gandhi was wrong because he ended up a martyr.  Yet, Martin Luther King, Jr., Cesar Chavez and a great many others claim to have been inspired by him.  Did Gandhi lose in the great historical war between pro and anti-human rights forces, the only war that really matters?

According to Jesus, the solution to war is to put down our swords.  A small child can easily grasp this crystal clear logic of Jesus, yet we find people today pretending to follow him, who still promote war as the solution to somehow secure the peace.  The life of Jesus has inspired millions of people to promote peace and goodwill.  Thus, he won a far, far, far greater victory than all of the military generals in history combined.

It is entirely logical, that if I promote peace and goodwill, I will help humanity and leave a positive legacy for others to emulate.  It is likewise, entirely logical that if I promote war as a solution, I will hurt humanity and extend the trail of tears for others to emulate.

We as individuals have little choice what our leaders or other people do.  However, we each have a personal choice to make, to either stand up for peace and goodwill or, to bow to peer pressure and promote war and other violence.

It takes courage to stand up against one’s own society, which is why Isaiah and Jesus continue to be revered by millions.  It takes only a victim of societal pressure to promote war.  It is mature to promote peace and goodwill; it is childish, historically and patently absurd to promote anything else.

Is Obama any smarter than Bush?  You decide.

(ChattahBox)—Oh my! According to Evangelicals, miniature snickers and milky ways are cursed by witches and demons. Pat Robertson’s Christian Broadcasting Network website posted quite the bizarre little Evangelical manifesto against the satanic dangers of Halloween. CBN contributor Kimberly Daniels, a self described “recognized prophetic voice,” wrote an unhinged rant against Halloween claiming, “most of the candy sold during this season has been dedicated and prayed over by witches.”

Daniels also warned of sex with demons and revel nights. And that witches on brooms, mummies, werewolves and Dracula “actually exist.”

Soon after the wacky piece entitled, “The Danger of Celebrating Halloween,” appeared on the CBN website it mysteriously disappeared, no doubt from mass mockery, but it remains cached and it has been re-posted on another site, thank goodness.

Read the insanity below for your Halloween Eve enjoyment:

“During Halloween, time-released curses are always loosed. A time-released curse is a period that has been set aside to release demonic activity and to ensnare souls in great measure … During this period demons are assigned against those who participate in the rituals and festivities. These demons are automatically drawn to the fetishes that open doors for them to come into the lives of human beings. For example, most of the candy sold during this season has been dedicated and prayed over by witches.

I do not buy candy during the Halloween season. Curses are sent through the tricks and treats of the innocent whether they get it by going door to door or by purchasing it from the local grocery store. The demons cannot tell the difference.

Halloween is much more than a holiday filled with fun and tricks or treats. It is a time for the gathering of evil that masquerades behind the fictitious characters of Dracula, werewolves, mummies and witches on brooms. The truth is that these demons that have been presented as scary cartoons actually exist. I have prayed for witches who are addicted to drinking blood and howling at the moon.

While the lukewarm and ignorant think of these customs as “just harmless fun,” the vortexes of hell are releasing new assignments against souls.

The word “occult” means “secret.” The danger of Halloween is not in the scary things we see but in the secret, wicked, cruel activities that go on behind the scenes. These activities include:

* Sex with demons
* Orgies between animals and humans
* Animal and human sacrifices
* Sacrificing babies to shed innocent blood
* Rape and molestation of adults, children and babies
* Revel nights
* Conjuring of demons and casting of spells
* Release of “time-released” curses against the innocent and the ignorant.”

Well, that sure as heck is gonna put a damper on the trick-or-treat festivities. I know three little buddies from the Senate who were all ready to eat candy until their tummies ached and their blood sugar levels got out of control (don’t worry, kids, they have the best health insurance coverage our money can buy!). I made a bunch of crap up My infallible confidential sources got me some pictures so that I could share them with you. Early in the evening, Lindseypoo Lindsey Graham was so excited, he put his costume on before anyone else!
