Your History Is Mine: 2002-2009 is the new Greatest Hits album of Funeral for a Friend.
It features, besides a few old songs, four new songs and a whole CD with demos and other previously unreleased stuff on it.
This is similar to Nirvana’s With the Lights Out, which consisted of demos and live songs only.
I generally like the concept, because it gives some insight into the band’s devopment process.

The song is, in contrary to most of their songs, quite fast. This is very nice for a change.
This is also true for the video, with its live concert theme.
It almost seems like they wanted to get rid of their seriousness.

In many ways Welsh rockers Funeral for a Friend couldn’t have timed the release of this Best Of any better. Just as bands like Alexisonfire and Cancer Bats were beginning to threaten their standing as lords of the (slam) dance, this album (plus an odd ‘n’ sods bonus disk) serves as an excellent reminder of just how innovative they can be. Featuring some classic melodies (‘Into Oblivion (Reunion)’) and riffs that are heavier than Satan’s under-carriage, the retrospective is a surprisingly tuneful collection. Better yet are the four, punk-tinged new tracks at the end, which point towards a bright future ahead. The screamo ship may be sinking, but at least Funeral for a Friend remembered their life jackets. Edwin McFee

I just got back from a Funeral For A Friend gig at the Wedgewood Rooms, and believe you me, it was IMMENSE. FFAF is one of the rare bands that sound just as good live, if not better. I went with Sam Bakes, and we managed to get there so early we were only second in the queue, meaning we got places right at the edge of the stage. I managed to almost kill Sam with my headbanging, punched some poor kid in the head by accident, screamed lyrics I didn’t even know, and came away with my ears pounding at almost the same volume as the amps we were stood right next to. All in all, an awesome, awesome night out. With any luck my mum’ll give in to letting me go to the Pyramids Centre to see Bring Me The Horizon in November. If not, well, I’ll probably just go mad and kill people.

The past month’s been hectic for us at AAR.

Firstly, we released the debut single by math pop quartet Pharaohs , which recieved awesome reviews across the board. You can pick the whole thing on iTunes for 79p a track.

Also, Brummie skate punks All Or Nothing re-recorded their 2 tracks for the split CD with Chaos Days. The tracks sound so good, can’t wait for everyone to hear them! AON are also gonna be playing the Birmingham Slam Dunk festival alongside Funeral For A Friend, Fightstar, Kids In Glass Houses and a whole bunch of awesome bands.

Over the past week or so we’ve been sending out CDs for the Pharaohs EP – We’ve Tried Nothing And We’re All Out Of Ideas (7th November), and Tell It To The Marines debut digital single Fireworks (26th October).

On top of that I started Uni, which as well as being absolutely awesome, it’s currently taking up a lot of my time. I’ve not been as active as i should have been, but hopefully i’ll be able to multitask again soon!

Hailed as one of Britain’s best bands, Welsh quintet Funeral for a Friend have enjoyed seven years of rock success that have seen them triumphantly breaking into the lucrative US and European markets, playing all the major rock festivals around the world and sharing a stage with metal elite – Iron Maiden.

With their new single ‘Captains of Industry’ premiered on BBC Radio 1 last week, their album ‘Your History is Mine 2002 – 2009‘ due for release on 28th September and a UK tour starting in October, it’s safe to say things are going from strength to strength.

Funeral for a Friend’s drummer, Ryan Richards, has been using Toontrack’s Superior Drummer 2.0 in recent months and explained to Time+Space what a difference it has made…

“I can´t begin to express how much easier Superior Drummer has made my life. We´re now able to do studio quality recordings at home which aid the demoing and b-side process unbelievably – at a fraction of the price of going in to record drums at a “real” studio.

I´m able to blast out my jams on my e-drums at full volume with headphones on, hence keeping the wife onside and marriage intact.

If I´m feeling particularly lazy I can use the awesome preset midi beats and present them to my band and fool them into thinking I´ve been slogging away at my kit, when, in fact, I´ve actually been watching the footie with a cold beer.

I´m also able to rip of some of my favourite producers´ tones by selecting their custom presets, rather than endlessly browsing forums in search of the magic formulas to those particular drum sounds.

It´s much easier to carry around a little usb hard drive than it is to carry 50 different drumkits around. I´ve not actually put this to the test, but I´m sure I´m correct on that assumption.

CONWAY SAVAGE

LIVE IN IRELAND

Recorded in County Leitrim, Nick Cave’s tweed clad ivory tinkler Conway Savage continues to carve out a solo career with his latest offering ‘Live In Ireland’ and it’s a record that’s a flawed yet fantastic snapshot of his often erratic performances. To paraphrase Bowie, Savage’s voice is a bit like sand and glue. He may not be blessed with the purest set of pipes, but his quivering, piano led renditions of songs off his last four albums suit his ragged, whiskey soaked voice perfectly. Highlights include the waltzing ‘Cruel Trick’ and ‘Que Sera Sera’ and despite making the odd cock-up along the way the fluffed notes only add the intimacy. All in all, it looks like this Bad Seed has made good. Edwin McFee

Only just realized that I still haven’t put this post up, it’s not good that I am actually able to think of posts to write I keep forgetting to actually put them up. Anyway…

When the weekend began there was a much more placid atmosphere then the year before, without as many random encounters and socialization with complete strangers. Although this didn’t really change the weekend certainly picked up and became a lot more entertaining. The weekend wasn’t without its dramas either but I’m not going to go into that here.

Now for the life source of Reading Festival, the music. There wasn’t a hard-hitting Main Stage like that of 2008, which featured Rage Against The Machine, Metallica, Queens of the Stone Age and The Killers (if they’re your thing), in fact it was a weedy disappointment in comparison with the 3 headliners being Kings Of Leon, Arctic Monkeys and Radiohead. My reaction, along with many others when these headliners were announced was where is the heavy Sunday that Reading is renowned for? Fortunately the smaller stages redeemed Reading this year. Bands such as Alexisonfire, Billy Talent, Atreyu, Rise Against, AFI, Gallows and Lostprophets exerted a much greater draw on me than any of the main stage headliners and these were bolstered by mid-lineup appearances by Funeral For A Friend and Enter Shikari.

I wasn’t really sure how Enter Shikari would fair on the Main Stage of Reading when up to now I have only seen them in small, dark venues but I am pleased to say that their main stage appearance had all the energy of their more secluded shows, as did their new material (this being the first time I have seen them live since the release of Common Dreads). The BBC’s coverage of Enter Shikari, along with Rou Reynolds beaming throughout, can be seen here. Funeral For A Friend are always amazing when I see them live and this time was no exception. It was a show like had never experienced before, being in a mosh pit to Juneau whilst it pours down with torrential rain is an amazing experience. Even when the rain caused a complete power failure on stage the amazement didn’t stop, with the crowd partaking in chants of “You’re no singing anymore” and a rendition of We Will Rock You lead by the drummer of FFAF. This performance being incredible despite technical difficulties, made this Kings Of Leon outburst along with there complaints about the sound quality all the more pathetic.

Very glad I went this year and bring on Reading Festival 2010!
