Não, a tarde/noite do verão carioca de 1991 do título não foi a data de algum clássico inesquecível do futebol. Mas sim uma das melhores noites do Rock in Rio II, o único dos 3 festivais da Artplan no Brasil disputado, digo, realizado no Maracanã. O Hanói Hanói  abriu, com dia claro. Em seguida, os Titãs arrebentaram. A primeira banda importada da noite foi a americana Faith No More. Enquanto Bush-pai bombardeava o Iraque, na primeira guerra contra esse país, o FNM bombardeou o Maraca com quase todos os petardos do discão cuja capa ilustra este post.  ”The Real Thing” já era o terceiro LP / CD do FNM, mas o primeiro com Mike Patton e o primeiro a dar as caras no Brasil. Eu já conhecia o disco todo, já tinha escrito no meu fanzine “Headline” que era praticamente um greatest hits, de tanta música boa atrás da outra, já devia ter visto algo do FNM ao vivo na TV. Mas olha… Mike Patton, Jim Martin, Billy Gould, Mike Bordin e Roddy Bottum superaram qualquer expectativa. O FNM matou a pau! Com “From Out of Nowhere”, “Epic”, “Falling to Pieces”, o protótipo do funk-o-metal “We Care a Lot”, “The Crab Song, “The Real Thing”, a cover de “War Pigs”… Peso (muito), baixo funky e muita loucura, no palco e na plateia. O grupo ainda fez bons discos de estúdio, mas que eu saiba o show do Maracanã foi o ponto mais alto da história do quinteto, que meses depois voltou para uma turnê nacional.

Ah, sim, o 20/1/91 do Maracanã ainda teve Billy Idol e Guns N´Roses no auge, excelente formação, na turnê dos discos ”Use Your Illusion”. Senhor show dos “Guns” também.

Como vocês devem saber, o FNM está na área. Tocou ontem em POA, daqui a pouco no Rio e sábado é a vez de Sampa, no Maquinária Festival. Domingo, show em BH.

A novidade é o guitarrista Jon Hudson no lugar do cabeludo Jim.

A volte mi viene il sospetto di essere diventato troppo cinico invecchiando. È che se sei in giro da tanto hai già visto accadere e ascoltato più o meno tutto. Ci fu un tempo, i primi ’90, in cui il funk-metal, altrimenti detto crossover, era una faccenda discretamente eccitante. Meglio crossover come definizione, perché se a incontrarsi erano principalmente funk e metal era spesso l’hip hop a officiare la cerimonia, magari convocando a testimoni dal blues al country, dall’errebì alla psichedelia. Però già allora sorgeva ogni tanto il dubbio che una musica sulla carta un non plus ultra di fisicità venisse assai più dalla testa che dalle viscere. Roba finto-nuova, in realtà nata vecchia. Figurarsi oggi! Street Sweeper Social Club sono principalmente Tom Morello, già chitarrista con Rage Against The Machine e Audioslave, e Boots Riley, rapper proveniente da The Coup. Al debutto insieme, mettono in fila undici canzoni che sono sempre la stessa per trentanove minuti fra i più lunghi di cui io abbia memoria. Può pure darsi che abbiano successo, siccome, 1), al mercato del capitalismo l’articolo “rivoluzione” tira sempre e, 2), sono tagliati su misura per un pubblico che a inizio ’90 andava all’asilo. Sarei io quello cinico? Non abbastanza.

Jane’s addiction is the symbol of alternative rock through the late 80s and early 90s and Nothing’s Shocking is their Led Zeppelin IV – a masterpiece which encompassed all the skills of the band and defined their roots and musical style. Namely, this record revolves around a lot of funk and metal – inspired mainly by Dave Navarro and Perry Farrell. However, neither of the two singles released received the credit or fame like they deserve.

Opening with Up The Beach, it provides a silent and overdriven guitar extended guitar chords to follow – reminding me of the 70s psychadelic and prog rock. Some beautiful phrases of guitar mixed with the occasical Farrell lyric present an ideal opening track showing what Jane’s Addiction is – at least musically at first.

Ocean Size is like Up The Beach, even with a similar title, at first.  Soft soothing acoustic guitar arpeggios until the rock gods come crashing down – with heavy percussion, lyrics and guitar riffs. Throughout the song, Farrell contrasts it with Navarro’s acoustic guitar track to his typical metal inspired solos. A beautifully wriiten song with contrasting styles through the song – typical of Jane’s Addiction.

Following we have Had A Dad and we are introduced to the funk metal that Jane’s Addiction is known for. Fast tempo,  with a catchy riff and goes right into guitar solos early on in the track. Lyrically, it is why I love Farrell and Jane’s Addiction with pauses in the track for the occasional yelp or caw.

Ted, Just Admit It… is slower with a ‘cool’ bassline and Farrell uses very strange sounds instead of those usual English words in the beginning of the track. Reminding me of funk jazz with a rock theme to it, we have very unique guitar licks with no real structure and is in real contrast to the repeated lyric ‘Nothing Shocking’ much like the album cover – two naked Siamese twins which is, well quite shocking to the normal human, but of course we are talking about Jane’s Addiction here.

Setting the tone for the album, it follows with several other tracks of similar style before we reach Mountain Song, the first single of the album, although the video clip was not initially released due to explicit content. A strong and catchy bassline, which really shows what alternative rock is and should be – hard rock and punk inspired music and uses some very good melody and the guitar effects make it even better – with overdrive and some short delay, I could listen to the track all day.

Idiots Rule follows and uses some more funk inspired guitar solo introductions with trumpet, and this really does make it alternative with extra and unneccesary instruments, well at least we thought that before. A strong bassline with a hint of slap makes it unnoticed due to the other instruments present but listen with good equipment, it makes it so much better.

Jane Says – the other single on the album, opens with the acoustic chord progression mixed with Farrell’s unique voice and this follows through the whole track making in more contrast and showing that Jane’s Addiction is more that fret-bashing and funk-metal solos. Although Farrell’s voice is so powerful that it almost takes over instead of the guitar.

Closing with Pig’s in Zen makes a good album an amazing album. Metal inspired riffs with short licks make it a great song to rock out to and even though Farrell’s lyrics are quite overpowering, the fantastic bassline and guitar takes over – just like all rock bands should. Cannot wait for February, 2010 – Soundwave is gonna go off!!!!

Após algumas semanas turbulentas, volto a aquecer as engrenagens para o Maquinaria Festival 2009 que ocorrerá dia 7 de Novembro na Chácara do Jockey em SP. (O dia 8 não conta muito pra mim!).

E nada mais justo do que falar do Fatih No More, headline do primeiro dia e, com certeza, a melhor banda a participar do festival. O Jane’s Addiction abre o show para eles, e para ver o post de Ritual de Lo Habitual, clique aqui!

Os precursores do Funk Metal (alcunha que um dia foi coroa para os Red Hot Chili Peppers) lançaram seu album de maior sucesso nos idos 89, The Real Thing, e até hoje é considerado um dos albuns mais influentes da história do Rock.

O quinteto é constituído pelo versátil e excelente vocalista Mike Patton, apesar de ainda estar meio fanho nesse album, o guitarrista barbudo Jim Martin com sua Flyng V, o boiolinha assumido tinha que ser tecladista Roddy Bottum, o excepcional baixista Bill Gould, que toca também no black-death-extreme-metal Brujeria, e o baterista Mike Bordin, que faz uns bicos toca com o Ozzy agora, dividindo seu tempo com o retorno da banda.

O album começa com tudo com From Out of Nowhere, primeiro single do album, porém ele só iria explodir com o lançamento do próximo single e música do album, Epic, que conta com uma participação épica de todos os membros.

Outro ponto alto do album é famosa introdução no baixo de Falling to Pieces, execelente música. Surprise You’re Dead é bem quebrada, com uma guitarra bem legal, mas achei que o vocal/letras poderiam ser melhores.

Zombie Eaters tem um clima do mal bem legal. A música homônima The Real Thing é uma das melhores, bem estruturada com um bom vocal do Patton:

Underwater Love tem outro vocal nasalado do Mike Patton e não tem nada de mais. The Mornig After é boa mas me lembra a introdução de We Care a Lot do próprio Faith no More.

Woodpeckers from Mars é instrumental, só que está mais para uma música que não deu pra colocar o vocal, apesar de ser até legalzinha. A décima música é War Pigs, cover do Black Sabbath e que ficou muito boa. E para fechar o album temos Edge of the World, que é excelente mesmo sem ter guitarra:

Apesar de ser muito bom, não sei se esta é a minha fase preferida deles, pois logo após a saída do guitarrista, a sonoridade se torna um pouco mais diversificada e mais cru, podendo dizer até mais obscura.

Se você não conhece, vale muito a pena escutar The Real Thing, pirncipalmente para esta afinado para o show deles!

Falando em show, logo vem uma, talvez até duas, review do AC/DC. Mas qual album?

Non, mais, dans quoi je me lance ?
Un peu comme pour son camarade Henry Rollins qui a été le sujet des Clés du rock 9, c’est très difficile de résumer la  carrière de Mike Patton. Il a travaillé avec beaucoup de monde et a su s’entourer d’artistes si, pas forcément d’avant-garde, sont toujours intéressants, ça c’est sûr ! Pour réunir les groupes, les projets parallèles, les participations,   il va falloir faire vraiment gaffe,  être très attentif pour ne rien oublier. Je vous propose de couper ce chapitre des Clés du rock  en deux épisodes parce que  la liste de ses activités est vraiment vaste. Le premier sera consacré aux groupes dont il a fait partie, le second parlera de tous ces projets parallèles.

Une intro en deux mots pour ceux qui ne le connaissent pas : on peut le qualifier d’être  un des chanteurs rock dont le répertoire est  le plus étendu. Il passe nonchalamment  des cris de chats, à la voix de crooner et passant par toutes les tessitures possibles.
On peut scinder sa carrière en cinq parties.
D’abord au sein des groupes Mr Bungle, Faith no More, Tomahawk et Fantomas comme chanteur,  mais aussi et surtout  la partie cachée de l’iceberg : tous ses projets personnels en temps que chanteur, musicien,  producteur, créateur de label, il a également tâté au cinéma. Il touche à tous les genres, qui vont du classic rock à l’expérimental le plus pointu et passant par la noise et le hip hop.

En avant goût, je vous propose  une vidéo de Faith no More lors de leur tournée faite cet été à l’occasion de leur reformation. Sous forme de clin d’oeil, ils reprennent “Reunited” une rengaine soul  des années 70. Et voici comment un groupe de “métalleux” qui n’a pas froid aux yeux se transforme en bande de crooners pour ouvrir leurs concerts.

Pour Patton en images, j’ai pris le parti de vous montrer un maximum de live, c’est une musique qui s’écoute mais qui se regarde aussi, le visuel est très important et donc les clips scénarisés n’ont pas d’intéret dans ce cas-ci.

Il commence sa carrière avec Mr Bungle, groupe composé de Trevor Dunn à la basse, Trey Spruance à la guitare, Danny Heifetz à la batterie et  Clinton McKinnon et Theo Langyel aux saxophones. Ils produisent une musique aux rythmes contrastés, brisés, un mélange de métal, de funk , de free rock et même de ska et allant même parfois vers la ballade, tout ça sur un canevas pop malgré tout. Vous voyez l’éventail musical proposé par le groupe. Mr Bungle sortira trois albums entre 1991 et 1999. La publication de ces albums sera facilitée par la notoriété acquise par Patton au même moment au sein de Faith no More.

Mr Bungle : 1991. Produit par John Zorn.

Disco Volante : 1995. Album dans lequel ils mélangent de plus en plus les styles musicaux. Les parties free, le sont de plus en plus, et les moments apaisés rappellent les génériques de séries télé, ou la variété italienne. Ils radicalisent et se rapprochent de plus en plus d’un esprit déconstruit “à la ” John Zorn.

California : 1999. Le disque s’ouvre sur le langoureux “Sweet Charity”. C’est peut-être l’album le plus “facile” du groupe mais pas pour cela le moins intéressant. En tous les cas c’est celui qui contient le plus de ballades. A nouveau, il font intervenir des influences  diverses dans leur bazar  musical. Ici ce serait plutôt des éléments dits de musique du monde - aspect fanfare avec accordéon, cymbalum ou guitares hawaïennes.

Nous sommes en 1989, et Faith no More – groupe de métal alternatif composé de Mike Bordin – batterie – Roddy Bottum – claviers – Bill Gould – basse – et Jim Martin – guitare – est à la recherche d’un chanteur. Par hasard, ils tombent sur une démo de Mr Bungle et,  impressionnés par la personnalité du chanteur, ils engagent  Mike Patton quasi dans l’heure. C’est de cette manière que notre ami se retrouve derrière le micro des deux groupes, ainsi qu’à  l’écriture.  Et,  j’ai envie de dire que Faith no More est un des initiateurs de ce qu’on a appelé le nu-metal.

The Real Thing : 1989. Engagé au sein du groupe très peu de temps avant la sortie de l’album,  il a eu un mois pour écrire les textes.  Un des premiers cd’s de funk-metal. Nominé aux Grammy Awards,  avec le single  ”Epic” dont la fin du clip montre  la triste histoire d’un poisson rouge hors de l’eau,  ce qui a fort énervé les défenseurs des animaux.

Angel Dust : 1992. Leur style s’affirme : du metal plus complexe mais dont la structure est  très précise. Patton est de plus en plus audacieux, il a une parfaite maitrise de ses cordes vocales. Sa personnalité devient également de plus en plus marquante. Ils reprennent la chanson  “Easy” des Commodores avec un break bien puant à la guitare, et là de nouveau Patton s’impose en crooner. So sexy ! Un album important. En images, je vous propose un extrait de leur concert au Pukkelpop en août 2009. Fameux clip où un stage diving se passe moins bien que prévu. Filmé avec un GSM, le son et l’image sont dégueus.

King For a Day Fool for a Lifetime : 1995. Continuation parfaite de Angel Dust, mais forcément moins novateur. Patton libère ses cris et hurlements, il devient de plus en plus théâtral. Mais il sait également très bien faire le latin lover.

Album of the Year : 1997. Un titre présomptueux ? non, c’est avec un très bon album que Faith no More termine sa carrière en 1998.

En 1998, juste avant la fin de Faith no More, Patton rassemble Trevor Dunn (bassiste de Mr Bungle), Buzz Osborne (guitariste des Melvins),et  Dave Lombardo (batteur de Slayer) pour former Fantomas, groupe de metal d’avant garde où Patton fait de sa voix un instrument, et utilise des onomatopées en lieu et place de mots. C’est aussi à ce moment-là qu’il crée son propre label Ipecac. Pour donner un petit aperçu : voici une impro en live de Patton et Lombardo :

Amenaza al Mundo : 1998. Au vu des musiciens intégrés dans cette formation, les amateurs de metal se sont précipités sur ce cd. Et, grande surprise, bien sûr construit sur des fondations métalliques, cette production en est très éloignée. Des rythmes perpétuellement brisés, un disque bruitiste qui pète en tous sens. Sur la pochette, notons l’iconographie du personnage de Fantomas, le criminel  mis en scène au cinéma par Hunebelle. Une baffe !

Director’s Cut : 2001. Les thèmes les plus célèbres de Nino Rota, Mancini ou encore Morricone passés à la moulinette. Une machine très speedée par moments et qui, tout à coup, ralentie au maximum, porte l’auditeur déséquilibré dans une espèce de rêve hallucinatoire. Ceci dit, certaines relectures sont relativement proches de l’original ( Rosemary’s Baby par exemple est proche de l’original avec un petit “je ne sais  quoi” qui  fait froid dans le dos).

Delirium Cordia : 2003.  Surgical Sound Specimens From the Museum of Skin. Ames sensibles s’abstenir, Fantomas crée un film pour les oreilles, une bande-son orpheline de sa pellicule. Fantomas laisse le soin à l’auditeur de se créer son propre film, ses propres images.  Durant plus d’une heure, il est plongé dans les ambiances d’opérations chirurgicales, avec bruits de peaux, cris de douleurs, carillons d’église, sang qui coule…. livret et photos de Max Aguilera – Hellweg.(interview) . Si vous désirez voir son travail, suivez ce lien, mais attention aux yeux.

Suspended Animation : 2005. Un album inspiré par l’univers des cartoons. Mélange de comptines, de sons de dessins animés et de rock épileptique. Titi et Rominet n’ont qu’à bien se tenir.  Magnifique pochette réalisée par Yoshitomo Nara, artiste japonais qui est maître dans l’art du dessin angélique et cruel.

En 2000, Patton réuni le guitariste Duane Denison – ancien Jesus Lizard – le batteur John Stanier - ancien Helmet – et le bassiste Kevin Rutmanis - the Melvins – pour former Tomahawk. Même s’il revient à une structure metal plus traditionnelle, peu de groupes du genre peuvent se vanter de produire des albums de telle qualité.

Tomahawk : 2001. Première production du super groupe. On sent les racines de chaque musicien, un peu de Faith no More, un soupçon de Helmet, une pincée de Jesus Lizard et un chouïa de Melvins. Mais est-ce problématique  ?

Mit Gas : 2003. A la sortie de ce disque, j’avoue avoir été déçue, à part “Rape this Day”, le reste me passait par dessus  la tête. Mais c’est en le réécoutant pour faire cet article que je me rends compte de sa modernité. Ils ont puisé leur inspiration de tous côtés, et l’ont diluée en doses homéopathiques tout au long du cd. Par exemple : dr’n'bass en intro de Capt Midnight, slow collant à l’italienne,  collages et samplings, field recordings, moments atmosphériques ou noise … et Patton qui utilise des effets et des filtres sur ses micros. Ce n’est pas pratique courante dans ce genre musical.

Anonymous : 2007. A mon avis : un disque raté. Ils ont voulu recréer des ambiances indiennes, avec instruments, chants, samplings, sons concrets. Mais ça ne fonctionne pas ! C’est cliché, et chiant.

Mais attendez, ce n’est pas fini, Michel a encore un tas de tours dans son sac !  Et je m’empresse de vous raconter tout ça très bientôt !

Acho que nada mais justo dedicar um pouco deste espaço à série Tony Hawk, especialmente quando se trata do terceiro lançamento.

THPS 3 é um dos jogos que tenho ótimas lembranças da minha “infância”, já que foi lançado em 2001, e foi um dos jogos que me influênciaram a gostar de Rock e algumas das suas vertantes.

Tony Hawk, para quem não se lembra, é aquele jogo que você precisa fazer pontos fazendo manobras com o skate e desvendando as fases nossa que jogo surpeendente!.

Sua trilha sonora vai do Punk ao Hip Hop, com clássicos e músicas excelentes mas que poucas pessoas conhecem, e se conhecem é devido ao jogo. Como a trilha é muito extensa, principalmente nos outros Tony Hawks, vou citar apensa as músicas que me chamam mais atenção.

A primeira música que me chamou atenção no jogo, fora Blitzkrieg Bop dos Ramones e Ace Of  Spades do Motorhead, foi Fight Like a Brave dos Red Hot Chili Peppers, pois até então não conehcia esse tipo de som deles, mas voltado pro Funk Metal:

Dentre os diversos Punk Rocks do jogo, podemos destacAmoebaar , dos Adolescents (ps.: eles só tem esse múscia boa…):

Dentre as músicas mais pesadas New Metal? a música que se destaca é Pulse do Mad Capsule Markets, sendo que para jogar é uma das que mais fazem clima ao jogo:

E para completar, na linha do Hip Hop temos If You Must do Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, que tem uma batida bem legal, apesar de não se notar bem no clipe:

Bom, esta definitivamente não é a melhor trilha da série Tony Hawk, porém é muito boa.

*É uma pena que um jogo que era tão legal e simples, mesmo tendo que acertar milhares de vezes os botões, tenha ficado tão complicado a ponto de eu não consigar dar um Flip, na versão para Wii…

Back in October of 1991, Ugly Kid Joe released their debut EP – As Ugly As They Wanna Be. 1991 was a year smack in the middle of the Grunge Music invasion… Ugly Kid Joe didn’t seem to care in the least. The mix of Hard Rock, Funk Metal and Heavy Metal had me more than interested in Ugly Kid Joe, I bought As Ugly As They Wanna Be and it served me right – back in 1991. Parodies aside, I could care less about what the titles of Ugly Kid Joe’s albums were making fun of… it was the funky heavy grooves of their songs that mattered most to me. Everything About You was a song that sounded unlike anything I was into back then, (Thrash, Death, Speed and mainstream Heavy Metal was what I was used to). When I first heard Everything About You, the first bands that came to mind that I was familiar with, in the Funk Metal genre, was Living Colour and Anthrax when they did I‘m The Man. White Zombie for certain had some Funk happening in their Metal back then too, yet this Ugly Kid Joe was not the dark side of heavy Funk either. This band was not as flamboyant as Faith No More, there seemed to be more of a street level accessibility to Ugly Kid Joe back in 1991-92. Ugly Kid Joe made the funk in their heavy come out and smack me offside the head. Metal Music be my saving grace, I became hooked by Ugly Kid Joe, both by their music and persona. 1991 and 1992 were turning points with Metal Music, so many great Metal Bands were still around and largely ignored by the mainstream media… Ugly Kid Joe busted onto the scene and was very hard to ignore, in my Metal opinion.

Obviously the freshness of Ugly Kid Joe caught on with MTV and FM radio, it had to. Ugly As They Wanna Be and America’s Least Wanted (from 1992), both sold over 2 million copies each, this Ugly Kid Joe sound really caught on, an undisputed Metal fact indeed. Ugly Kid Joe was not just about putting the funk into Heavy Metal, no sir. Their cover version of the legendary Black Sabbath’s classic Sweet Leaf exemplified their fondness for the heavier side, all the while paying tribute to their Heavy Metal influences. Ugly Kid Joe was not the refined and glamourous Hair Metal Band nor were they an extremely pissed off Extreme Metal Band. This was a band that was not even in the middle for they were so unique. What Ugly Kid Joe brought to the masses was a mixture of Heavy Metal genres, almost as if they grabbed ahold of the very best of what these genres possessed and intertwined them all into their very own sound. To the best of my Metal memory, Ugly Kid Joe was not a copy cat band and no other Heavy Metal Band followed after, that sounded like Ugly Kid Joe either. (Maybe there was, I just never heard of them and they never lasted very long).

In 1992, I bought America’s Least Wanted and could not have been happier about it. Listening to Ugly Kid Joe cover the late Harry Chapin classic Cat’s In The Cradle only solidified the diverse musical nature of this band. I was astonished as a Metalhead back in 1992… here is Ugly Kid Joe, covering songs from Black Sabbath to Harry Chapin. Cool. I had bought a Harry Chapin greatest hits album in the late ’80’s, (keeping it a secret amongst my Metalhead buddies), yet Ugly Kid Joe made it known to the Metal world they dug Harry Chapin – I realized then that music is one big connected family. I really look back on the first two Ugly Kid Joe albums with the upmost Metal fondness, this band was different, a Heavy Metal band that was fun without ever displaying any artificial pose to their music or appearance. Menace To Sobriety was released in 1995, followed by Motel California… I gave both albums their justified listens and due, yet I still uphold the first two Ugly Kid Joe albums as their finest moments.

The Metal bottom line is this, with all of the revivals going on in the Heavy Metal genres, especially with reunions and reunion tours, it would be cool to once again see and hear Ugly Kid Joe. It is not my intent to say that Ugly Kid Joe was the best thing since light beer, rather they were a cool band to choose from the Heavy Metal buffet… and still are. So many bands from the 1980’s and 1990’s are huge again, making albums and touring… Ugly Kid Joe would most likely be quite the hit with this new generation of kids that are just getting into Hard Rock and/or Heavy Metal. The Ugly Kid Joe look and sound is all around, as I meander around in public, (especially the Malls) in 2009. This now vintage band would fit right in today…  what once was old is new again – yet this is only my Metal opinion… and I am sticking to it.

Ugly Kid Joe:

Nuno Bettencourt, Portuguese rock musician

O Living Colour encerrou suas atividades em 1995. Em 2000 eles já estavam de volta, 3 anos depois lançaram o fraco Collideøscope, quem diria que 6 anos depois o Living Colour lançaria um álbum tão excelente e animado quanto The Chair In The Doorway, surpreendendo vários fãs da banda.

O álbum ainda tem poucos dias de vida, menos de uma semana. Mas já conseguiu provar ser um dos melhores álbuns lançados neste ano. Animado, solos de guitarra excelentes e muitas vezes enormes, um baixo extremamente presente na grande maioria das músicas, uma bateria complexa em grande parte das faixas e um vocal alterando bastante entre partes mais calmas e berros.

Faixa a Faixa

Burned Bridges começa com uma batida reta, uma guitarra totalmente desfocada, e um baixo excelente que vai guiando a faixa, com vocais de Corey Glover no fundo que aos poucos vão adquirindo mais importância e foco na música. Algumas viradas de bateria, o vocal aumentando e o baixo ainda excelente, até que um solo de guitarra extenso empanturrado de efeitos entra em cena aos poucos. A música consegue ter um jeito psicodélico e pesado mesmo sem uma guitarra presente.

The Chair, essa já começa mostrando que é uma das músicas mais pesadas do CD. O riff pesado dá lugar a uma guitarra aguda com vários efeitos no refrão da música.Um vocal mais nervoso marca bastante a faixa. É uma faixa curta, e que deixa a desejar.

DecaDance, Um riff pesado, bem grave e com bastante groove, um refrão nervoso marcam a faixa. Um dos maiores destaques de DecaDance é o seu solo de guitarra fulminante que já chega quebrando tudo, o excelente guitarrista Vernon Reid ainda faz umas embromadas no final da música.

Young Man é até o momento a faixa mais funkeada do álbum, uma batida animada, um riff excelente cheio de groove, um baixo bastante presente, e o vocal com uma pegada bastante funkeada. Mas cabe a bateria o posto de grande destaque da música.

Method é a faixa mais estranha, experimental, louca e indigerível de todo o álbum. Um jeitão bem trip-hop, com destaque ao vocalista Corey Glover. Os demais instrumentos são meio dispersos, e a bateria tem uma batida que fica se repetindo ao decorrer da faixa inteira. Todas as faixas que vem posteriormente à Method estão entre as melhores do álbum.

Behind The Sun, uma das poucas faixas do CD que tem cara de hit. A música é marcada por um riffzinho excelente com um aspecto bem feliz e um vocal bem limpo, no refrão tudo fica mais pesado, e Corey alterna pra um vocal mais suave, mas berrando. No final ainda rolam uns gritinhos melódicos que permanecem até o fim da música. Sem dúvidas uma das melhores faixas do álbum.

Bless Those (Little Annie’s Prayer), é um cover e PQP que cover! a música original é da artista, Little Annie, bastante desconhecida. A original possui cerca de 3 minutos, o cover do Living Colour aos 5 minutos e meio. E é como um cover deve ser, não apenas uma imitação da faixa original e sim uma adaptação da música original ao estilo da banda que a coveriza. Agora, falando da música em si. No começo destaque total para o baixo, e depois de uma passagem com uns slaps, a bateria entra em cena, fica em um ritmo mais animado, outra passagem de slap chega e Corey entra em cena. Uma guitarra meio dispersa, uma bateria reta, um vocal calmo e um baixo excelente vão marcando a música, e como sempre a passagem de slaps vai ditando a música, depois de mais uma tudo fica bem mais pesado agora no refrão. A mesma coisa ocorre duas vezes, até que depois do segundo refrão Vernon Reid decide estrapolar e faz um solo de guitarra enorme e excelente, que acaba na passagem de slaps no baixo e a música volta a ficar com aquele clima calmo de antes. A construção se repete, e novamente depois do refrão Vernon Reid decide mostrar o grande guitarrista que é e faz outro solo que novamente termina quando ocorre a passagem de slaps no baixo. Vernon Reid até tentou, mas pelo menos para mim o grande destaque da faixa é o baixista Doug Wimbish.

Hard Times começa com um ritmo bem leve com total destaque ao vocalista. Rapidamente entra no refrão com um ritmo mais pesado, agora a parte calma já não é mais tão calma, e rapidamente já tem um segundo refrão ,só que extendido, e posteriormente já chega um solo de guitarra com uma excelente bateria no segundo plano. O solo cobre quase a faixa toda e quando ele acaba já engata um refrão na sequência e a faixa termina com uma pequena enrolação.

That’s What You Taught Me é uma faixa marcada por várias viradas de bateria, um ritmo mais calmo, um vocal bem melódico, além de uma guitarra belíssima e aguda e um baixo bastante presente. Vernon Reid começa a estrapolar no finzinho da música, mas nada em excesso. Divide os holofotes com Behind The Sun quando o assunto é música do álbum que tem aspecto de hit.

Out Of My Mind, chegamos na música mais pesada do álbum. Um riff bem pesado e grooveado e um vocal disperso marcam o começo da música. Aos poucos Corey vai soltando berros graves enquanto o ritmo vai mudando no refrão. Depois que uma rápida parte mais calma aparece, Corey volta mais louco do que nunca soltando berros ao maior estilo Mike Patton do Faith No More. E o ritmo pesado da música se estabiliza até o final.

Not Tomorrow, uma faixa calma, lenta, relaxante e extremamente psicodélica, para acabar com  o clima pesado deixado pela faixa anterior. Essa curta faixa supostamente fecha o álbum…supostamente…

Asshole (Hidden Track): Uma faixa animada, marcada especialmente pela letra engraçada que conta a história de um sujeito que foi abandonar a namorada para curtir a vida e acabou na pior.

Claro que “The Chair In The Doorway” não é nenhum Vivid, mas não deixa de ser um CD excelente que vai conseguir conquistar os fãs do grupo. Ainda é preferível começar a discografia do Living Colour pelos clássicos, mas isso não quer dizer que seja uma má ideia começar por esse álbum também.

Começa a esquentar o calendário de shows em São Paulo. Uma penca no Via Funchal: Children of Bodon, dia 12 de setembro. No site da banda finlandesa, versão death metal de Aces High, clássico do Iron Maiden!

Quatro dias depois, a casa da Vila Olímpia receve Lily Allen.

Em 15 de outubro, a volta do Living Colour! No fim de outubro, metal muito pesado: Kreator e Exodus. Na mesma noite! E  em 14 de novembro, Twisted Sister, no/na Via Funchal.

O Faith No More, que explodiu com seu funk metal no começo dos anos 90, confirmou participação no 1º dia festival Maquinária, 7  de novembro, na Chácara do Jóquei, em São Paulo. Senhor showzão o FNM fez no Rock in Rio 1991, no Maracanã. Mike Patton e cia fizeram tanto sucesso com Epic e outras melôs do discão The Real Thing que pouco depois o Faith No More voltou ao Brasil para uma turnê mais ampla.  Com FNM no Maquinária Festival, vão tocar Jane´s Addiction e Deftones. No segundo dia do Maquinária, 8 de novembro, Evanescence.

No mesmo fim de semana, rola outro festival, o Planeta Terra, no … Playcenter! Primal Scream confirmado.

Ainda em novembro, a banda americana The Killers volta ao Brasil. Shows em São Paulo e Rio confirmados, segundo o site da banda.

Egressos dos anos 80, o Living Colour já foi hype um dia… quem não se lembra de “Cult of Personality” e “Glamour Boys”, e depois de muitas idas e vindas, voltam a se consolidar como grupo relevante, afinal são músicos de talento e tem um super repertório.Em setembro vão lançar novo trabalho de estúdio, “The Chair In The Doorway” – primeiro trampo de inéditas em 5 anos ,que segundo o guitarrista e líder Vernon Reid é o melhor trabalho da banda.

Em agosto a banda inicia um Tour para promover o novo trabalho e no MY SPACE dos caras aparece confirmado – dia 16 de outubro de 2009, show no Circo Voador no Rio de Janeiro como único show do Living Colour na América do Sul em 2009.

Por essa eu não esperava. Depois de 11 anos, Mr. Mike Patton & Cia estão de volta. Já há uma série de shows já marcados pela Europa. A formação conta com Mike Bordin, Roddy Bottum, Bill Gould, Jon Hudson e Mike Patton. Infelizmente o guitarrista original Jim Martin não faz parte da reunião.

Sometimes I hate my job. Or at least I hate working on certain things at my job. I had to do it all yesterday so every chance I had I put on the headphones I did and I cranked up some Rage Against the Machine. I know this song is a popular choice but it is so perfect for hating on corporate tasks you don’t want to do, and after listening to all four of their albums yesterday in the process, this song is still my favorite from Rage Against the Machine.

AKA – Extreme II: Pornograffitti. Great album. Extreme were a band I originally had a hard time getting into outside of the mega hits “More Than Words” and “Hole Hearted”. Upon first listen, this album was just too much funk metal for me, but now I’ve seen the error of my ways. Funny enough, I felt the opposite about 2008’s Saudades de Rock… which didn’t have *enough* funk metal!

So besides the two previous mentioned songs (which didn’t really represent the band’s overall style accurately), there’s a number of monsters here. “Get the Funk Out” is probably my favorite Extreme song, it’s so big and bombastic and catchy. I love it.

I’ll be honest with you, I’ve never been a fan of funk metal. To me, metal is funny precisely because it takes itself too seriously (cases in point: Manowar of course; but also Deicide, any band with corpse paint, any band with even only one bullet belt; and so forth). Funk metal, because it does not takes itself seriously, deflates what makes metal funny in the first place. That’s why I never thought funk metal was cool. To me it was flat, even as I could understand intellectually that the music was anything but flat.

But that was more than 15 years ago. This week, Ian Christie gives me (and you) the chance to go back to some classics of the genre and who knows, I might end up liking it.
