The Best Of Kurtis Blow (1994).
Review:
When discussing the pioneers of rap music, Kurtis Blow often isn’t mentioned as often as Grandmaster Flash, The Sugarhill Gang, and Run- DMC. This is unfortunate because he truly is one of the forefathers of hip-hop and unlike Grandmaster Flash and the Sugarhill Gang, he was no one trick pony. Although many music fans may only know him for his now classic track “The Breaks”, The Best of Kurtis Blow shows that he had much more to offer. Nearly everything here is great and still sounds fresh today. Unlike much of the rap music back then and even today, Kurtis Blow, at least for most of his career, created his music with live musicians rather than solely relying on sampling and production. Although “The Breaks” is now a hip-hop classic, many of the tracks here such as “Tough”, “Hard Times”, “Party Time”, and his highest charting hit “Basketball” are just as strong. Listening to the old school references on “Tough” and “Basketball” over 20 years after they were recorded are still a joy to hear. But while the lyrics are strong on all of these tracks, it’s the music that puts these songs over the top whether it’s the funky bass lines on “Hard Times” and “Tough”, the heavy percussion on “Party Time” and the Midnight Star-soundalike “I’m Chillin” or the combination of both on “The Breaks.” The excellent musicianship also shines on the more lightweight tracks “Daydreamin’” and “Starlife.” Other excellent tracks here include “Christmas Rappin’”, which uses the guitar line rather than the oft-used bass line of Chic’s “Good Times”, his duet with Run-DMC, “8 Million Stories”, and “One-Two-Three (Main Street, Harlem, USA).” The tracks here are listed chronologically thus the weaker tracks are on the album’s second half. But while these songs are less memorable musically and lyrically and rely more on stellar production, the tracks “America” and “If I Ruled The World” are also pretty decent. Simply put, if you love old school rap, The Best of Kurtis Blow should be in your music collection. Newer fans will appreciate this too as most of the songs here have aged well and the best tracks are great party songs. Highly recommended. (John Alapick – Amazon).

Since there weren’t any choices, it goes to Michael. It goes to him not because he was the best this year but because he died this year, let’s keep it real. This music industry is so politically inclined they couldn’t just say we are giving MJ the accolades we haven’t given out of guilt…maybe if more of us were supportive and loving toward one of the greatest to ever do it then maybe the people closer to him would have done more to protect and take care of him.

Looking forward to seeing who actually wins! Maybe the industry can take notes from the AMAs by giving awards based on sales and not politics since sales mean PEOPLE chose the winners! *Pardon me Grammys* but the voters are not necessarily in tune with the music…I’ll get on their case in another blog coming soon!

Oh je, schon wiede ‘ne Woche rum und ich habe viel zu wenig Zeit, um eine längere Recherche zu machen. Wenn ich nicht ordentlich suche, bekomme ich wieder einenAnpfiff von Steven Inch – der Kerl kann einfach furchtbar pingelig sein. Und er weiß zu viel. Kurzum, weil’s schnell gehen muss, aber die Qualität nicht darunter leiden darf, stelle ich heute mal wieder eine Platte aus dem reichhaltigen Vermächtnis von Eddie Bo vor: “Sissy Walk” von Sonny Jones.

Ob tatsächlich ein Herr namens Sonny Jones das Stück singt, ob es sich eventuell um “Little” Sonny Jones” handelt oder ob Bo persönlich am Mikro war (an der Orgel saß er zweifellos) und ein Pseudonym verwendet hat, ist noch etwas umstritten. Für mich geht die Tendenz aber deutlich in Richtung “Eddie Bo ist Sonny Jones”. Zum einen, weil auf der Funky-Delicacies-Compilation “The Hook And Sling” Sonny Jones gar nicht mehr erwähnt wird. Zum anderen, weil die Stimme doch sehr nach Mr. Bocage klingt. Ich weiß, einige schreiben, dafür sei die Stimme des Sängers zu hoch. Aber ich denke, dass ein Künstler wie Eddie Bo durchaus dazu in der Lage ist, seinen Gesang an das Stück anzupassen. Und eine etwas damenhaftere Stimmlage erscheint bei einem Stück, das “Sissy Walk” heißt, durchaus passend.

Volles Programm in dieser Soul Unlimited – Ausgabe: Zwei Mal aktueller Analog-Funk, die Dynamites aus Nashville/Tennessee und Mountain Mocha Kilimanjaro aus Japan. Anschließend gibt es Hybrid-Funk aus Deutschland, von Marc Hype und Jim Dunloop, die soeben ihr Debüt-Album “Stamp Out Reality” bei Melting Pot Music herausgebracht haben.

“Goldfish” Two individuals from Cape Town, who through their rhythmical sounds and scintillating beats they’ve changed the way South Africans see music.

A electronic Funk Duo utilizing elements such as effects, bass, saxophone, samplers and the list is endless. From two varsity students, and now two music phenoms who truly have inspired a nation of musicians. Caught in the loop of music, parties and everything goldfish.

They have traveled the world from Miami to Ibiza and have sold out at each show nothing really gets better than this. Their new album Perception Of Pacha Remixed, promises to be great.

What is “Goldfish”?

1.What has been your motivation to make that difference.

We just heard a different sound of music to what was available, so we tried to make it ourselves.

2.The world has seen nothing like you what makes you unique and African?

What makes us African is that we don’t try to sound like a band from overseas. We were born here and our music should reflect that. We also love working with different vocalists and musicians from Africa!

3.Will you make a impact on those individuals who you inspire?

3.If you were to live your life all over again, what would you do differently?

4.What’s next for goldfish?

Touring SA as part of our tour promoting our new CD, and then playing some shows in Australia for New Years Eve. Next year a new artist album.

Den här låten tillhör mina absoluta favoriter med Jody Watley som jag än idag anser vara världens vackraste kvinna. Har iofs haft ämnet uppe för diskussion tidigare men sen räcker det att jag ser en video med henne så känns all diskussioner ganska överflödiga.

När det gäller den här låten så är den allra bäst i tolvtumsversionen, men Universal Music Group är så sura så de tillåter inte att man bäddar in deras material i bloggar och liknande. Dock så slinker det igenom material ändå vilket den här videon är ett exempel på. Men det lär nog inte dröja länge innan de slagit av embeddingfunktionen även på detta klipp.¨

O vestido mais comentado das últimas semanas não é exatamente algo da moda, não foi usado em alguma festa de premiação ou algo do tipo por alguma celebridade.

É o vestido da Geyse, a garota que a Faculdade Uniban esculachou por estar com um vestido curto.

Ta todo mundo cansado de falar disso, eu ja disse várias vezes que achei no mínimo absurdo o que fizeram com ela, isso realmente tem cara de coisa armada, de briguinha que resultou nisso, e na boa? Ela vai se dar (e ja está se dando /UI) muito bem, vai receber uma grana em cima disso …

Agora alguns vem dizer a seguinte opinião, “hoje em dia esse tipo de traje é completamente normal, não deveriam agir dessa forma (…)” e por ai seguem aquela linha de raciocínio que todos sabem como termina.

Mas eu me pergunto …”hoje em dia”?

As roupas curtas são sinônimo de muitas reações, podem despertar desejos, podem despertar espanto ou até uma certa “repugnância” de quem vê, podem até despertar ciúmes kkk

Algumas imagens pra vermos como a idéia de roupa curta é algo tão atual.

No futebol por exemplo a moda da roupinha curta começou cedo kkk

As Paquitas da Xuxa também usavam bermudas “comportadas”

Nem preciso aproximar mais ainda né? Anos 90 com toda aquela onda Axé que teve no Brasil, É o Tchan é um dos melhores exemplos dessa moda, roupas curtíssimas e muita, eu falo MUITA pele sendo exposta, é só lembrar de como era, o short geralmente era curto e colado, até no homem era assim o que dava pra ver até detalhes das “partes íntimas” dele.

Continuando com os movimentos musicais como exemplo, o próprio funk agora é um exemplo dessa modinha de pouca roupa, pelo menos nunca ouvi falar de um traje especial para usar em um baile funk (muito pelo contrário né, a vulgaridade esta nadando de braçada nesse movimento musical).

Eu sinceramente prefiro mais o estilo elegante, também não precisa ir produzidíssima para uma padaria por exemplo né, mas eu prefiro mais a elegância do que a vulgaridade, mas quem não tem um shortínho curtíssimo (pelo menos pra usar em casa) que atire a primeira pedra kkkk

Só pra finalizar, os alunos da Uniban protestaram tentando se defender, mas alguém avisa eles que é muita burrice quando você faz uma cagada ficar tentando se explicar.

Já ouviram aquela frase “não explica que piora”? Então, até então todo mundo pensava que o povo da faculdade apenas se “empolgou” com a situação e virou aquele vuco-vuco.

Agora eles estão mostrando que são retardados mesmo, fazendo um PROTESTO contra uma mulher, tão só piorando a própria situação …

Bits & Pieces 2 (1980)

Först måste jag göra vågen för snubben som satt ihop det här klippet. Han har nämligen bemödat sig med att göra ett bildspel med omslagsbilder till den skiva som just mixas i klippet. Helt underbart och det gör att det blir lite kul att kolla på klippet. Annars brukar man ju bara lyssna när dylika klipp spelas på YouTube och där inte finns nån riktig video till. Här blir det istället en riktigt underhållande tillbakablick på musikhistorien när man får se skivetiketter och omslag avlösa varandra i nån slags orgie i nostalgiska referenser.

Att jag tog med det här klippet hänger ihop lite med det inlägget jag hade om Grand Master Flash och The Wheels Of Steel nyligen. Den låten fick ju nämligen status som en egen låt trots att det ju faktiskt är lite av en mashup eller medley som det kallades förr. Får nog gå igenom alla såna begrepp vid tillfälle för jag inser att det har ändrat betydelse till viss del genom åren. Hur som helst så är Bits & Pieces, som kom 1980, ett bra exempel på dåtidens medley som var oerhört populära bland oss DJ’s. Gemene man var dock rätt frustrerade över dem då de ju bara fick höra snuttar av sina favoriter.

Men sen fanns det medleys som bara var skräp och det var när det var dåligt mixat eller dåligt klippt. Eller så fanns det skräckexempel där en del originallåtar var med men sen hade man fyllt ut resten med covers. Finns dock guldkorn även bland skräckexemplen och jag ska se om jag vid tillfälle kan ta med ett sådant. Har nämligen ett sånt som poppar upp i skallen just nu men nu när jag kollade så finns det inte på YouTube så då får man väl fixa det själv.

Hur som helst så tillhör Bits & Pieces 2 ett av mina favoritmedleys från den tiden, dels för att det är bra mixat med tanke på dåtidens tekniska möjligheter. Sen är det en sån suveränt bra blandning på låtar så man kan få ståpäls för mindre.

Fick direkt en “det-här-låter-bekant-känsla” när jag hörde introt till den här. De har ju lixom rippat idén till sitt groove från en annan gammal favorit och tillika Maydayklassiker som kom några år tidigare.

Håll med om att det skulle vara kul att börja leka och mixa de här två låtarna med varandra och se vad man kan få för kul resultat. Sen innehåller Sizzles låt fler såna igenkänningsfaktorer men just nu har jag för mycket gröt i skallen för att riktigt komma på vad det är jag är ute och letar efter.

Greetings friends and observers of all sorts!! This is the news:

It has been too long, I have too much music unheard and unavailable to the masses and I won’t stand for it any longer! I have the framework and material for a full-length album in the recording/production phase with a number of tracks almost done or completely finished and many others written and in the conceptual stages.

The style will be an eclectic fusion of electric soul-hop and organic instrumental flavor. I will be taking on the majority of sounds, from vocals to production, guitars, and otherwise with some projected appearances by Aloe Blacc, U-N-I, Cook Classics and others (If you are reading this and want to get involved please hit me up!). Live joints and other instruments will be featuring The Love Supreme (Bennie Rodgers, Peter Dyer, T’eamir Sweeney, Ron Avant, and Joseph Gonzales), Manifest Music Productions‘ Adam Berg and DJ Matter, production by Nathan @ DTA Studios (Rough Status big ups!)

So there it is! My Manifesto for Artistry. I have some reservations and occasionally fear about being an artist. Some may say that I already am an artist per se, but until now I have never marketed myself as such or focused my effort into finding my sound and I am excited about sharing a part of myself with the world, some of the experiences I have had in my life and some thoughts on our state of affairs in society, spirituality, and otherwise.

For years I have focused my efforts on mastering the guitar and other instruments, to compose, record and produce music, but recently my goal has shifted to tackle the art of song and the stories, the melody and the emotive. To find the essence of who I am and share it with you.

For now I will leave you with a simple youtube video performing an acoustic version of my song “Change.” I am considering blogging throughout this production process and giving some previews of where I will be going with this one. PEACE, BLESSINGS & HEALTH to all!

December is the ‘official’ start to the Australian summer. It’s also the start of festival season, when Aussies kick off their shoes, kick up their heels and toe-tap their way through a line-up of local and international acts that rock and roll along well into April. Blues, Pop, Trance, Folk,Funk, Comedy – everyone gets their moment in the summer sun.

The nation’s capital, Canberra, gets the jump on summer, with Foreshore, held on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin in November. Major local and international bands help the locals celebrate the end of exams and the start of what we call the silly season.

The first of the really big summer festivals is Homebake – the music event that celebrates home-grown talent. Most of Australia’s (and New Zealand’s) top bands have strutted their stuff on the Homebake stage and each year the line-up – and the crowds – get bigger. The 2009 concert saw over 40 acts signed up.

Celebrating a colourful and peripatetic 15-year history in 2009, Homebake has finally found a home in Sydney’s Domain – the historic parkland in the centre of the city that is the spectacular setting for a summer-full of free performances that span symphony, jazz, and the now world-famous Tropfest short film festival.

So all this month and may be next I will promote my wonderful  country of Australia.
