Yesterday I downloaded legendary DJ Funkmaster Flex’s new music app. Yes this may seem like a small deal but follow me. The DJ most commonly known for his tenure at Hot 97, growl, bombs, and incessant rants amongst other things … took a leap of faith, enlisting the help of blogger extraordinaire Karen Civil to take his brand digital.

Adding on to In Flex We Trust, a blog/web site dedicated to all the happenings in the hip hop community, Flex had created the ultimate music app for hip hop heads around the world… or those with an iPhone rather.

I downloaded the app with low expectations (to be frank), and was immediately impressed. Not only was the app easy to navigate (as apps should be), but the quality and quantity of the content was definitely well planned. Because I had heard so much about it, I immediately headed to the “Freestlyes” section and dived head first into that 2001 Rocafella freestyle.

Anyone who follows Hot 97 or knows anything about hip hop know that when artists stop by Flex’s show, it’s not just to chat it up or hype some imaginary beef, it’s to be added to that list of legendary freestyles that’s been keeping the culture alive since the 90s.

Listening to those freestyles (BTW, the Slaughterhouse one was straight fire), and the 60 minutes with Funk Flex Vol. 1 tape (classic, btw) made me so nostalgic and made me think back to when I first discovered Hot 97 and would research them like CRAZY!

When I was younger, I was really into boy bands, but I also had this huge love for Puffy and Ma$e so I would have to sneak and listen to rap music because we weren’t allowed to listen to it. I had like a stereo system in my room, and my parents knew I would dub the Backstreet Boys, N’Sync, and Britney Spears onto cassette tapes from the radio (does, anyone else remember doing this?). So one day they bought me a music converter of sorts, and after weeks of playing around with it, I discovered that it could be used to pick up radio stations in other states, New York being one of them.

Hot 97 was the first station I listened to.

I remember turning my radio down low and tuning into Angie Martinez and Funk Flex. There was always so much static, but I didn’t care. I love hip hop and they played all the music that I never heard on the radio in the small town in Ohio I grew up in.

Those days are a huge piece of the puzzle in my love for hip hop.

But, the converter eventually stopped working and we soon got a computer which meant I could just listen to Hot 97 online. But hearing all this new music before everyone sent me on a downloading frenzy. I created music collages of hip hop listening to Hot 97.

I lived hip hop because of Hot 97.

This app reminded me of not only how far technology has come but how hip hop has held its hand in the journey. Funk Flex is allowing us to revisit the past, reintroducing many of us to our first love. He’s also created a platform for ’90s babies to finally have a meet and greet with the legends who influence popular music today.

The birthplace of music, the epicenter of individualized pieces of our culture has been placed in the one app.

So, I got that old thing back and this time if it breaks down, I know hip hop lives in a place were I can find it.

Flex drops off a new cut from DJ Khaled featuring verses from Drake, Ross, Future, & Lil Wayne. A solid cut but it had room to be even better had Wayne not been included lets be honest. It’s 2013 when will artists realize having a feature from Wayne was hot back in ’06? Anyway, Enjoy!

A better title for this track is “Drake and friends” since Drizzy’s blueprint is all over these proceedings. Drake handles the chorus and provides the best verse as well. Wayne sounds like he’s still shaking off the effects of his recent health scare, Ross is merely serviceable, and Future is thrown in randomly in the closing minute. Not an immediate smash guest spot like Drake did for Khaled with “I’m On One” a few years back, but this is still solid.

Action Bronson drops this sweet track with production credits going to Static Selektah. Premiered by New York legend Funkmaster Flex, it’s a real NY sounding track with some dope samples and scratches. Bronson is so distinct sounding and he has been killing every track he’s been on recently.

For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been paying attention to the buzz over Funkmaster Flex upcoming mixtape and I couldn’t believe how huge it was….But now I understand!  

The project, which is properly titled Who You Mad At? Me Or Yourself? is set to drop April 17th and will be released in two parts. The first part is called  Camaro and the second, Mustang. There will be 54 tracks on the compilation and will include artist such as Chris Brown, Cam’ ron, French Montana, Wale, Fabolous, Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, Young Jeezy and … The list goes on.
