The Strange Incident of the Recycle Bin

I came home one day and there it was. As usual. An array of empty recycle bins strewn across the sidewalk.

This is a typical sight on a Thursday afternoon. I thought nothing of it, since most people don’t get home until later in the day, and many more don’t pick up their bins until one, two, maybe three days later. No big deal. People are busy.

But one bin in particular lingered. Even after all the others had disappeared. And it wouldn’t bother me… actually, I probably wouldn’t have even noticed… except that it lingered exactly in front of my house. And I mean right there. It was the first thing I saw when I left in the morning, and it greeted me as I got home from work in the evening.

Then the homeowners association left a little warning tag on my doorknob. Okay, really? This recycle bin does not belong to me. I don’t recycle, I don’t have a bin. It’s not my responsibility. But the HOA tag is requiring me to take action. So I do.

I put the bin in front of my neighbor’s house.

When I get home the next day, guess what I see. There’s that bad penny, right in front of my house again. I guess I get the point. It’s a tightly plotted little townhouse community, and a few inches one way or the other is all we get. I was politely being informed that not only does the bin not belong to Neighbor On The Left, but that until the rightful owner is identified, please keep the stupid bin off my property. That’s my interpretation.

Not to be outdone, I slide the bin over to the right. And it lives there for a few days.

And then it’s back in front of my house. Not like it’s been put there, but almost like it went there. I’m serious. It’s like it just moved over.

I ignored it.

That night there was a huge storm. I woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of winds hurling against the house, pushing tree branches around and swirling freshly raked yards with leaves. Most unhallowed of all was the gentle ruckus of the recycle bin being blown around the sidewalk.

So next morning I went out in my socks, picked it up, and put it on the deck. There. Happy?

Next day I go out to get the trash? The bin is gone. Poof.

Sometimes on stormy nights I still hear the abandoned recycle bin being blown across the sidewalk. And I really just don’t care.

While speaking Saturday I remarked how the Obama admin seems like a giant iPhone commercial with a czar for everything.

Curtis the Conservative Teen and member of the St. Louis Tea Party Youth made this fantastic “commercial” illustrating such. He even got the music down!

My family and friends have requested that I blog the funny and cute things that Bailey and Hannah say so they can go back and read it someday when they are older. So here we go.

It has happened again—Black Friday. It has proved to be the longest day of the year for me. Up before 5 AM to make sure I am not too far back in the long line of shivering human being, most of whom are holding cups of steaming something-or-other.

BabyLove Nappies

To start things off with a bang (literally), I’d like to thank BabyLove Nappies and agency DDB Melbourne for not only creating a nappy/diaper ad that actually shows baby poo, but for being the first I’ve seen to show explosive diarrhoea or “number 3’s” (you do the math).

Well done.

To draw in its target audience, this one starts out with the well-known cute baby faces, happy mother and some calming music… but in a surprise twist towards the end, rather than blue liquid, we’re given a dose of reality, albeit exaggerated for comedic effect. And in describing the product, where competitors use euphemisms like “extra absorbent core” and “dryness layer”, BabyLove nappies contain a “poo poo pouch [to] handle a poo explosion”.

Illustrator, Patrick Moberg came up seven witty internet vices. I seem to have lucked out having only four of the named vices. Maybe I need to spend more time online…not! Patrick Moberg is also responsible for the New Media Workout Plan illustration you may have seen.

In 2006, un copil ciudat s-a nascut in Charikot, Nepal, atragand curiozitatea a sute de mii de oameni. Bebelusul, care avea capul aproape lipit de partea superioara a corpului, ochii extrem de bulbucati, si-a capatat imediat denumirea de Copilul-broasca.

Copilul a murit la doar jumatate de ora de la nastere, si a fost dus la spital imediat dupa decesul sau. Vestea s-a raspandit ca focul, iar in fata unitatii sanitare mii de oameni se stransesera pentru a vedea “grozavia”. Politia a trebuit sa fie mobilizata pentru a controla multimea.
Barbatul cu coada

Un alt care a socat lumea este acela al barbatului cu coada. Chandre Oram, din Bengalul de Vest, India, s-a nascut cu o prelungire a coccisului, care seamana cu o coada in toata regula. Superstitiile Indiei l-au facut sa se retraga din viata publica si sa creada ca este blestemat. Oram a declarat ca a fost foarte deprimat dupa ce 20 de femei cu care a avut o relatie, s-au despartit de el cand au aflat de ciudatenia lui.
Copilul ciclop

Nici copilul ciclop, nascut in India, in 2006 nu a fost privit cu ochi buni de catre societate. Medicii care au asistat la nasterea copilului cred ca accidentul genetic s-a produs din cauza efectului unui medicament experimental, anti-cancer, pe care mama bebelusului il luase in timpul sarcinii. Fetita nu avea nas, iar creierul nu era dezvoltat, astfel ca a murit la doar cateva zile de la nastere.

Wang Fang, in varsta de 27 de ani din China, s-a nascut cu picioarele intoarse invers – in locul degetelor era calcaiul, iar in locul calcaiului erau degetele. Wang s-a adaptat acestui mod ciudat de a trai, si chiar a refuzat sa fie platita ca o persoana ce are un handicap, spunand ca: “Pot sa alerg chiar mai repede decat majoritatea prietenilor mei, pot avea o slujba normala… asa ca nu este niciun motiv sa fiu clasata ca o persoana handicapata!”

Liu Junjie din China este bebelusul care s-a nascut cu trei maini. Insa datorita tehnologiei avansate, doctorii au reusit sa-i indeparteze cea de-a treia mana care era dezvoltata complet.

Femeia cu un sfarc in calcai. Un consult la medic a dezvaluit un diagnostic uimitor: unei tinere de 22 de ani i s-a dezvoltat un sfarc exact in mijlocul talpii.

Last night I was having a discussion amongst some buddies, and the topic we discussed was the importance of toes. I know this sounds completely random and without any possible relevance. However, in light of the recent injury to Atlanta’s quarterback, Matt Ryan, the toe seems to be of huge relevance and importance.

Right now, the Atlanta Falcons are a disappointing 5-5, and they are hoping to make the playoffs once again. Surprisingly, though, Matt Ryan’s big toe can have a great deal of influence on that hope. When Ryan hurt his big toe against the Bucs today, the Atlanta Falcons’ season could have taken its biggest loss yet.

Of course the seriousness of the injury is not yet determined, and there are no guarantees that Ryan will miss extended time. But, just because of the mere fact that Ryan was not taking snaps for the Falcons against the Bucs, it made me realize how important having Ryan is for this Falcons team. Without Ryan, the Falcons are not a team that most teams will fear offensively. Opposing teams can stack the line in hopes of shutting down the run, and they will allow Chris Redman to try and beat them. With Ryan, though, the Falcons are considered one of the toughest teams in the NFC. Obviously, this year their record does not indicate that, but if the Falcons do sneak into the playoffs as a wild card, there will not be too many teams hoping to play them. They have proven that they are tough, and they can turn it on in any given game.

If Matt Ryan’s toe injury does turn out to be a legitimate concern, the Falcons will need to pull out all the stops if they want to make it to the playoffs. They will need to rely heavily on their running game and their defense, and they will need to have some decent play out of Chris Redman as more of a ”manager” of the offense. Believe me, though, the Falcons are praying that, that is not the case.

As for now, the city of Atlanta is keeping their eyes on one man’s big toe to keep their team’s playoff chances alive. Will the toe let them down? Only time will tell.
