Sunday at Austin City Limits Music Festival 2009 ended up being the best day of music that I have ever seen at the event. Pearl Jam and Michael Franti and Spearhead ripped my face off. Clear skies prevailed overhead, but underfoot the trodden earth remained in a state of mud. Indicative of the diversity of the Austin music scene, the day progressed from dance pop to Texas rock to country to hip-hop-jam-band fusion to pure grunge rock.

The day began with the light-hearted dance pop of the Atlanta-based group the The B-52’s. From past punk pop classics like
”Private Idaho” to the new electronic dance hits like
”Funplex” the The B-52’s covered tunes from all eras of their musical catalog.
The pop ballad “Roam” electrified the crowd, while fun songs like
”Strobe Light,”
”Hot Corner,” and
”Love in the Year 3000″ kept the crowd dancing. The The B-52’s pleased the audience capping the set with their mega-pop-hits
”Love Shack” and
”Rock Lobster.”

From the pop of the 1980s and 199s I transitioned to the alternative and grunge rock sounds of the North Texas-based rock band The Toadies. The sounds of the rock music of the 1990s and 2000s elicits memories about my teenage years. The new album No Deliverance has some chops like the tune “No Deliverance,” but I really like the tunes from the early album Rubberneck, such as “Backslider,” “I Come From The Water,” and
”Tyler.”
And of course the song that took the cake at ACL was “Possum Kingdom.” The north Texas rockers played a very nice version of this hit song about murder behind a boathouse.

The Miami-based Raul Malo brought American roots music and the wonderful power of multiculturalism to ACL. And finally
”It Only Hurts Me When I Cry” displayed the crooning ability of Raul Malo’s marvelous voice.

Michael Franti & Spearhead brought the house down. People danced, sang, and cried. It was kind of like a spiritual revival. Michael Franti and Spearhead are a must see live music act. Their musical power cannot be understated.

After being awed by Spearhead I turned around to see Pearl Jam open their set with the 1990s power ballad “Why Go” from the legendary album Ten. We raced to the front of the main stage as the spectacular day of live music continued. The Pearl Jam set list included many well-known songs like “Corduroy” and my favorite tune “Elderly Woman Behind The Counter in a Small Town.”
From newer tracks like “World Wide Suicide” to old-school favorites like
”Even Flow,” Pearl Jam wailed and rocked and kicked out the jams. I had heard a lot of hype about Pearl Jam and it seems to all be true. These guys a true blood rock and rollers.

The set continued with sing-a-longs to “Daughter” and rip-roaring guitars over the
”State Of Love And Trust.” The new single “The Fixer” from the album Backspacer sounded as fresh as the older tunes, driving hard guitars over quality vocals and lyrics. Pearl Jam’s music making and song writing have stayed crisp and hard hitting.
”Go” and then
”Red Mosquito” featuring special guest Ben Harper on pedal steel kept the crowd in a constant state of awe.
The hard rockin’ continued with “Do The Evolution” and The Who cover with
”The Real Me.”

In the song Funplex, the B-52s offer their own satirical musical commentary on the artificial consumer mecca known as the mall.

Remember the shopping mall in its heyday? It was the poor man’s Disney World for the superficial, materialistic, hordes of consumers who were still dreaming the American dream of being able to buy all of the components of “true happiness” under one sprawling roof.

Nowhere was this trance-like out of control consumerism for all things bright and shiny portrayed so truthfully, than in George Romero’s 1978 classic Dawn of the Dead. This film, on the surface is a zombie horror flick. However, it is much more horrific if you look at the subtext to see the mirror of honesty held up to our empty consumer-based society. This film reveals the awful truth about us in the form of roving mobs of zombies stumbling mindlessly through an American mall in the all too familiar habitat of piped in Muzak and inadequate fluorescent lighting, as they literally consume anything they can get their hands on in an effort to satisfy their insatiable appetite for more.

The malls are still around today, but they have begun to die off and lose their once enticing luster as a result of an economy as empty as the dream on which it is based. However, there will probably always be a significant segment of society that will still flock to the confines of their favorite mall. They will be the ones wandering in a trance toward what they believe will bring them happiness, oblivious to the piped in Muzak and the hypnotic humming of the fluorescent lights above.

Goin’ up and down the escalator
You blew me off and
And now you’ve lost
The real thing

Oooh -broke my heart at the Funplex
Yes you did -yes you did
Oooh -broke my heart at the Funplex
Yes you did -yes you did

You know-fashion frenzy gets me higher and higher
No will power and my wallets on fire!
(Panic at the Funplex-Panic at the Funplex)

Oooh -broke my heart
Oooh -broke my heart
Panic at the Funplex

Faster faster thrill thrill
Too much to do
It’s time for a pill

Oooh -broke my heart
Panic at the Funplex

Misery at the Funplex!
And theres too much sex!
The world is goin’ to hell
And what is that horrible smell?

“Love Shack” e “Legal Tender”.

E eu vou assistir o show!

Nuncan soube e nunca desconfiei. Ouviu?!

Ladies and gentlemen, I have some weird news for you today.

Some of you may be very uncomfortable with this, and I must concede that this entry may not be for those of you out there who are faint of heart.

Ladies and gentlemen, I’ve just learned that the B-52’s put out an album of all new material within the last year. Yes, I’m talking about these B-52’s:

We should be so lucky as to have a group of four homosexual bomber planes get together and make a power-pop album. That would be the best.

Here’s the video (Youtube won’t let me post the actual video, so this is a live video. It get’s the point across) for the single from their newish album. It’s called Funplex, and it’s pure evil.

Here are the thoughts that were going through my head while watching this video, unedited in any way:

- I can’t believe that the gay guy who just talks all his lines made a solo album with Steve Albini.

- That redhead has held up pretty well for being almost 60, but then again, this isn’t a very high quality video. These TV editing wizards can pull off anything. They could make River Phoenix look sexy.

- I’m not snob, in fact I eat at Taco Bell with some frequency. However, I would never patronize The Taco Tiki Hut.

- The “Gay Talking Guy’s” first verse is maddening. Here are the lyrics:

Chandalabra’s in a wonderbra/Dress Barn runway, a real draw/Faster pussycat, thrill, thrill/I’m at the mall on a diet pill

You’re at the mall “on a diet pill?” You’re pushing 60, buddy. First of all, you’ve got no reason being at that mall, save for buying some new denture glue or a replacement battery for your Hover-Round. Second, why the fuck are you taking diet pills? You’re not a fat man, so I have to assume that you’re “on a diet pill” trying to get fucked up. Of course, that begs the question of why you only took one. You’ve got to get it together, Old, Gay Talking Man. What would the grandkids you can’t have because you’re gay think of your childish behavior?

- Of course, it’s possible that this song is rooted in satire, and that the lyrics are supposed to be coming from the mouths of some “damn kids” the B-52’s are trying to mock. But if that’s the case, then everything I’ve ever known just flies out the window. Was there never actually a funky little shack where we could have gone together? Was there never a rock lobster? The mind reels at the question of what other lies have been disseminated by this duplicitous quartet.

After listening to the song, I had to take a step back and really reflect on what I’d just heard. It was bad, it was sickly catchy, it was infantile. However, it struck me that no matter how bad, no matter how sickly catchy, no matter how infantile this song is, I’d sooner listen to it over and over for days than listen to anything by that windbag Kanye West.

Which brings me to a big announcement: Kanye West has officially called for a runoff election, challenging current Douche President (or “Douche-In-Chief”) Bobby Flay. Tune in tomorrow for their campaign information and the posting of the official ballot. See you then.

Below is a list of the CD’s I bought that were released in 2008. They are listed in the order they came out, and I even wrote little comments next to them.

Panic At The Disco – Pretty. Odd. <– Very different from their debut, but still good. And “Nine In The Afternoon” was easily one of the best music videos of the year!

The B-52’s – Funplex <– My mom actually bought this one, but I like it, so I just counted it as being in my collection. It sounds like the B-52’s, all futurized.

Mariah Carey – E=MC2 <– Not her best, but still pretty good. My favorite song off it is “I’ll Be Lovin’ U Long Time”.

Ashlee Simpson – Bittersweet World <– Awesome! Her best so far in my opinion.

Weezer – Weezer (Red Album) <– Like always, totally awesome. I love how they experimented with different sounds and even had members other than Rivers sing!

The Ting Tings - We Started Nothing <– Quite unique-ly awesome.

Katy Perry – One Of The Boys <– Love it! I don’t care what people say about her, she’s awesome.

Camp Rock Soundtrack <– Definitely the best DCOM soundtrack since HSM2’s.

Miley Cyrus – Breakout <– ”It’s Miley!” All the songs are good except “Breakout” and the nightmarish (sorry, Miley) remake of “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”. While the best song is definitely “Goodbye”.

Jonas Brothers – A Little Bit Longer <– So I finally gave in and became a Jonas Brothers fan. Best song? “Can’t Have You”. (though they really should have given less vocals to Nick, and more to Joe.)

The Veronicas - Hook Me Up <– Yay, finally! This CD came out last year in Australia! Quite awesome.

Demi Lovato - Don’t Forget <– Awesome debut, I love her! Definitely the rockingest and most vocally talented of the Disney stars.

The Pussycat Dolls – Doll Domination <– Pretty good, I bought the deluxe edition with the bonus disc. Favorite track? “Love The Way You Love Me”. Should definitely be a single! Springtime, maybe?

P!nk - Funhouse <– First P!nk CD I’ve ever bought! (I have a burnt copy of M!ssundaztood) Really good, and the video for “So What” was definitely one of the best of the year!

David Cook – David Cook <– A little disappointing, he could do so much better! Best tracks are definitely “A Kiss On The Neck” (hidden track!) and “Bar-ba-sol”.

Kevin Rudolf – In The City <– Awesome debut! I love “She Can Get It”!

Britney Spears – Circus <– Yay, Britney’s back! I (of course!) bought the deluxe edition with the bonus tracks, and it’s (of course) awesome! But what’s with “Radar”? That was already on Blackout!

Fall Out Boy – Folie A Deux <– They just keep getting more awesome! I love how they experimented with new sounds on this album. I especially love “w.a.m.s.”.

The All-American Rejects – When The World Comes Down <– Good! My favorite track is definitely “I Wanna”.

Review:
The B-52s “Funplex” (2008)
Rating: 5/5 Stars

One word: Unbelievable!

The B-52s are back and are as fresh and relevant as ever. Just when you think “the B’s” have called it quits, they prove they are still a force to be reckoned with. Rather impressive for a band that began in 1976.

To put things into perspective, it’s been 10 years since their greatest hits CD “Time Capsule,” 16 years since “Good Stuff” – their last full-length CD (minus Cindy Wilson), and 19 years since “Cosmic Thing” – their first full-length CD without Ricky Wilson (Ricky Wilson, Cindy Wilson’s brother, died in 1985).

Now in 2008, “Funplex” brings back together Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, Cindy Wilson, and Kieth Strickland for a new party album for a new millennium. With producer Steve Osborne on board, their sound is vibrant and dynamic, with still the quirkiness that makes The B-52s what they are. This is quite possibly their best work since the loss of Ricky Wilson.

The usual sound palette is present: organs, bongos, clanging-jangling guitars, rich drum beats, and infectious rhythms. Added to the sound is a base organic synthesizer presence which creates a rich tone, but is never sterile as some synthesizer sounds can be.

One aspect that really stands out is Kieth Strickland’s guitar work. He has managed to replicate (without ripping off) Ricky Wilson’s signature sound. It can be eerie at times, but it works perfectly.

Fred Schneider’s voice seems stronger than usual. While he still uses his “sprechgesang” style, he also proves he can carry vocal tunes as well.

And Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson make their presence known as their voices compliment each other as always.

Without commenting on every song, there are a few that must be mentioned:

“Pump” – The quintessential B-52 song and probably their strongest opening song for a CD since “Planet Claire” on their debut album

“Funplex” – Their first hit from their new album rocks out about “mall life”

“Juliet of the Spirits” – An absolutely beautiful song to showcase Wilson’s and Pierson’s vocal work

“Hot Corner” – Another rock song that will stick in your mind

If you are a fan of The B-52s, you will love this CD. If your only exposure to the group has been “Love Shack,” it’s time to move into the “Funplex.” And if you are not a fan of the band, you may still be impressed with their new sound.

“Funplex” is definitely one of the “must-have” CDs of 2008!

July 19th, 2008 brought America’s long-reigning party band to Europe’s premier party city, Amsterdam. For 32 years, The B-52’s have thrilled fans with their hedonistic blend of killer hooks, bizarre lyrics, 60’s girl group vocals, and of course the sprechgesang of the irrepressible Fred Schneider. While their profile had been significantly lower in recent years owing to a 16 year gap between albums, to the faithful The B’s were never truly away, and are received with a riotous welcome from Paradiso’s sold-out crowd.

There can surely be no stronger argument for music retaining youth than the B-52’s. The glamourous-as-ever Kate and Cindy, have maintained their remarkable vocal chops and dance throughout, spurring on the audience from opposite sides of the stage like the experienced party hosts that they are. Fred, naturally, stalks the stage fully immersed in his carnival-barker mode, reminding all present of why he is possibly the most original and charismatic frontman to emerge from the late 70’s. Over to the side, original B’s drummer-turned-guitarist Keith Strickland (looking roughly half of his 54 years) provides solid musicianship throughout – the backbone of the whole show. Of the three backing musicians, only a slightly stone-faced keyboard player appears immune to the festivities. From the opening, a rollicking-rendition of Pump (from the new album), the audience are eating out of the band’s collective hands.

It’s a testament to the strength of the new material (largely written by Keith) that it stands so well along such all-time classics as ‘Rock Lobster’ and ‘Love Shack’. The band too, appear delighted that the new material is so popular with the crowd – indeed after 16 years without new material, it must be a huge relief. This is not to say that ‘Lobster’, ‘Planet Claire’ and even the money-track ‘Love Shack’ aren’t performed with all the flamboyant vitality that they deserve. Quite the opposite, and the clear affection that both the fans and the band have for these gems is undeniable.

Special mention must go to Cindy, who has on occasion been unfairly criticized for perhaps seeming a little less than exuberant. Tonight, she steals the show, dancing and rocking her way throughout the entire set with boundless energy and a smile on her face. Her gutsy, wild rendition of fan-favourite ‘Give Me Back My Man’ deservedly receives the biggest applause of the night.

Great chemistry, all the classics, excellent new songs and raucous performances from a band who stubbornly refuse to grow up. A party out of bounds, indeed.

It’s a shame that Kate Pierson’s involved in this mini-scandal right now (some stupid ex-boyfriend posted a picture of her online… not going to link to it). The B-52s occupy a very special place in my heart.

In 1983, I went to Great America with friends for a birthday party. They had a video jukebox there. I popped in my money and played Thomas Dolby “Hyperactive” and The B’52s “Theme for a Future Generation.”

To me, The B-52s always stood for summer. Fun, ridiculous, light-hearted, offbeat, strange, hot summer. Even when they were tackling a political issue, like in “Juicy Jungle,” they maintained their element of fun.

Here’s “Theme for a Future Generation” (sorry about the intro, but it was the best reproduction I could find), and here’s hoping that no damage comes from the photo.

‘FunPlex’ by the Bs, and ‘Accelerator’ by R.E.M are new albums worth your download–R.E.M. rocks more like its old self than it has in years, and ‘FunPlex’ is aptly named–fun and tres danceable tunes abound here, so it you don’t want to shimmy, better not listen.

Just stay chillin’ in your Love Shack and fugeddabowdet.

One thing I noticed as I watched R.E.M. this evening on TV’s Austin City Limits is that guitarist Peter Buck favors Al Gore even more than the last time I saw this perennial band…but I must suppose Pete knows it.

* Athens’ third band would have to be the very nice guys of Widespread Panic, of course! And no ranking intended, especially since all three create totally different music experiences and all are top of the crop.

O clipe de Bleed it out é a coisa mais foda de todas e Given Up é muito foda. Baixei o resto do cd e estou gostando. Lembra os velhos tempos de Meteora.

Bad Religion tem me surpreendido com o ótimo New Maps of Hell. Quanto ouço Bad Religion, encarno o espírito Greg Graffin e começo a cantar gesticulando e fazendo caretas, no meu quarto devidamente trancado, é claro.

Andrew Eldritch, the lead singer, is indeed one of the reasons why I started wearing sunglasses everywhere.

Here’s a sample of what’s in heavy rotation on the ipod these days:

and yes, my droogs, that is indeed Fred Schneider on a Segway, in this video for the title track from their new album.

Cheesy, Zany, unapologetically brilliant.

From ‘them who did loveshack’ and the ‘ones who did Rock Lobster that was on family guy’ comes a new album, with more cheese than a cheese pizza with extra cheese and more cheese being eaten by Bob Fosse.

Mr and Mrs Talky-Shouterson are back!

It just fun and filled with shouty mayhem.

“Keep doing what we’re doing ’cause we’re doing it right. Keep doing what we’re doing ’cause it’s what we like” and this is true. I do like it. It’s a style that only the B52s seem to be able to perform well and they continue to do so. There’s nothing shockingly innovative about this album in contrast to their others, but because nobody else is even trying to do the same things, it’s still sounding as refreshingly new as it did when they first came out in the 80s.

Listen to this album: With a huge hat on
