Why is this shipment so important and make me so giddy?  It’s been over five years that I stepped away from designing kids’ room to invest every ounce of brain energy into a special needs boy of mine. My deaf child needed me home full-time and my full attention. I stepped away from a career I loved, and a community I love even more for that precious boy. Now, I am back at it, and that precious little Ethan is doing amazing.  As a matter of fact, he is a terrific helper.

I am also giddy because my oldest son Elliot, who grew up in this business is now excited to jump in with both feet. So much that he, as giddy as I am, starts snapping pictures left and right. I had to grab my phone and take this honorable picture or Elliot inspecting our first pieces of kids room furniture going onto our showroom floor.  This is very familiar to him. I look forward to a future guest blog, by Elliot to share a little of what it was like growing up in this business with his mom.  As you know I love sharing the process and sharing in this first shipment of our kids room boutique.

The penthouse is a modern Manhattan escape from the rest of the world. The sofas are from B&B Italia; the cabinetry is custom-made.

A crystallized glass catwalk runs the length of the apartment, from the entry to the rooftop terrace staircase. 

A garden of empty flowerpots was designed by the landscape architect and transplanted to the roof here.

The living room is furnished with a few carefully chosen pieces. The Zig-Zag Chair is by Gerrit Rietveld; the sculpture is by Louise Nevelson.

The kitchen is clean and simple, and open to the living room. The cabinetry and the Bosch stove were in the apartment when it was bought; the barstools are from Ikea.

The carved out space for the office is what was once a closet under the stairs. The table is from Ikea; the chair is a vintage piece by Otto Wagner, bought in Vienna.

The guest bedroom is furnished with chairs by Josef Hoffmann and his son, Wolfgang, bought in Vienna about 20 years ago. The photo that hangs over the bed is by Paul Himmel.

A portrait of the architect Louis Kahn watches over the powder room. The Barcelona stool by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was a gift that was added to the bathroom.

The apartment was renovated to reflect the owner’s tastes, who said: “the apartment is now really my spot,” . “When I look out the window, I just love being part of the city. It’s the energy here that’s always been something for me.”

Furniture Brands International, Inc. is trading at $5.48 with 25 percent increase from August; La-Z-Boy Incorporated is $8.37 with 14 percent increase; and even though IKEA is a privately held company, the world’s top furniture retailer posted record sales in its most recent fiscal year. Chief Executive Mikael Ohlsson told Dagens Industri turnover in its fiscal year, which ended Aug. 31 rose to 23.1 billion euro, up some 7.7 percent from the previous period.
