I don’t get mad often. It takes a lot to get a rise out of me. I used to think that this was due to me having my anger in check. I’m beginning to realize that’s probably not true. Because even though I don’t have a short fuse, I can be very vindictive. I can also hold onto grudges for far longer than reasonable (if there is such a thing as a reasonable grudge). Which leads me to believe that I have a long fuse. Most of the time I’m able to defuse the bomb before the fuse runs out, or at least get it to a place where it won’t hurt anyone. I sometimes even push people away so they won’t get caught in the blast radius. However, there are times when people get caught in it. Occasionally its people completely unrelated to the incident. I’m not sure exactly why I’m writing this. I guess just to flush out my ideas. But I need to get a better hold on my anger, stop being vindictive and holding grudges.

Well hello there. Sorry for the ugly mug shot. Per the regs, I am getting my occasional self portrait in the mix to prove its actually me making this airplane. Today, we take a break from the endless posts about drilling or deburring or general parts prep to report that an ACTUAL part was made today. The part in question is the F-705 bulkhead. It went together really quick considering the pieces have been sitting for about a year waiting to be primed. The biggest drama was taking the time to make sure lower section parts fit together properly before squeezing the rivets. When I primed them the other day, I forgot to mark their orientation. In the end it all came out pretty good. Biggest issue now is where to store it. Oh yeah, I need to mount the seatbelt anchors and the drill the flap blocks tomorrow before entering the Christmas blackout period. Next up will be the remaining bulkheads and perhaps a little longeron bending before the new year.

Here’s a closeup of the mid section of 705. The tape reminds me not to rivet those holes until we start putting the fuse together.

A new trend has emerged among indie rock band groups. This past September, Wayne Coyne of indie rock band, Flaming Lips found himself in his birthday suit with hundreds of naked strangers at Oregon beach. He was at work. Coyne was filming his band’s new music video “Watching the Planets”. He described this event as “a fleshy, six-minute clip starring 300 very naked Flaming Lips fans and one very naked Flaming Lip”. You may ask yourself why this trend has emerged. As the internet continues to expand, so has the amount of indie rock bands. With a continuously growing amount of bands, the artists must do more to stand out from the playing field.

While the videos have little hope of airing on traditional networks like MTV or Fuse TV, they have a chance to spread across the web like wildfire. When the Flaming Lips video hit the web in late October, blog-surfers couldn’t get enough. The band began riding a giant buzz wave for its debut album.

Check out the latest blog from Pastor CEO Perry Noble at http://www.perrynoble.com/2009/12/14/this-s

Check out the latest blog from Pastor CEO Perry Noble at http://www.perrynoble.com/2009/12/14/this-sh_t-is-awesome/. Read the article and ask yourself why this man is a pastor of a church? The filth and warped logic coming from Perry Noble is nothing but pure rebellion and sin. Perry Noble scoffs at the Scriptures and openly brings reproach upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. I’m not sure which Jesus Perry Noble follows, but my Jesus warned us against using filthy speech (Col 3:8) and living in the culture that the world promotes all around us (1 John 2:14-16).

If you want to build a great church then go after the people that no one else wants! That’s what Jesus did…and because of that we are included in HIS Kingdom. Quite often something will happen in our church that will remind me that, though we are far from perfect, we are going after the people that I believe Jesus would have gone after…

So…the other day in our children’s area this happened…

A first time visitor (probably around 9 or 10 years old) walked into our 4th-5th grade room in KidSpring at our Anderson campus and was BLOWN away!

He looked at the children’s worker who met him at the door, and, after looking around the room he said, “you guys have a wii?”

“Yep,” she said.

“And you guys have a PSIII?” he said!

“Yes sir, we sure do,” she replied.

“And we can play these for free?” He asked.

“Yep,” she answered.

Then he turned to his friend and said out loud, “This Sh_t is awesome!”

Now I am quite sure that makes some of you very uncomfortable; after all, you don’t want the cussing kids coming into church and messing up your perfect child.

However…after hearing this story from one of our children’s staff I was INCREDIBLY pumped up because I thought, “THAT is why we do church!” I know many churches would not want a kid like that…but we do because HE MATTERS TO JESUS…even though his behavior is not perfect!(source)

Don’t you want your children going to NewSpring? Maybe when they get old enough to go to FUSE, Brad Cooper will have them saying “BAMF” see: My concern with Brad Cooper from NewSpring Church and Brad Cooper’s twisted defense for cussing. Before that they can follow the NewSpring Children’s minister life coach Pudge Huckaby and learn all the bonuses of listening to filthy rap music in order to see the love of Jesus see: The sour fruit of Perry Noble: NewSpring Children’s minister defends his love of filthy rap music!

The filth pouring from this The Seeker-Sensitive Purpose Driven Church for the Carnal Nature of Mankind is shameful. May god convict Perry Noble so that he will repent of this sin and stop making a mockery of the Church of Jesus Christ.

Perry Noble and all from NewSpring Church who reads this blog need to ponder the following:

1 <sup>a</sup>Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children;

2 and awalk in love, just as Christ also bloved 1you and cgave Himself up for us, an doffering and a sacrifice to God 2as a efragrant aroma.

3 But <sup>a</sup>immorality <sup>1</sup>or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among <sup>2</sup>saints;

4 and there must be no afilthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which bare not fitting, but rather cgiving of thanks.

5 For this you know with certainty, that ano 1immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom bof Christ and God.

6 aLet no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things bthe wrath of God comes upon cthe sons of disobedience.

7 Therefore do not be <sup>a</sup>partakers with them;

8 for ayou were formerly bdarkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as cchildren of Light

9 (for athe fruit of the Light consists in all bgoodness and righteousness and truth),

10 1atrying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.

11 <sup>a</sup>Do not participate in the unfruitful <sup>b</sup>deeds of <sup>c</sup>darkness, but instead even <sup>1</sup><sup>d</sup>expose them;

12 for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret.

13 But all things become visible awhen they are 1exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light.

14 For this reason 1it says,

“aAwake, sleeper,

And arise from bthe dead,

And Christ cwill shine on you.”

15 Therefore 1be careful how you awalk, not bas unwise men but as wise,

16 1amaking the most of your time, because bthe days are evil.

17 So then do not be foolish, but aunderstand what the will of the Lord is.

18 And ado not get drunk with wine, 1for that is bdissipation, but be cfilled with the Spirit,

19 <sup>a</sup>speaking to <sup>1</sup>one another in <sup>b</sup>psalms and <sup>c</sup>hymns and spiritual <sup>d</sup>songs, <sup>e</sup>singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord;

20 <sup>a</sup>always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to <sup>1</sup><sup>b</sup>God, even the Father;

21 1aand be subject to one another in the 2bfear of Christ. [1]

We needed to build a network storage system to store a few hundred gigabytes of data. Our goals were

We needed to build a network storage system to store a few hundred gigabytes of data. Our goals were pretty basic at first : reliability and serving the data to windows clients. So started a search for several fileserver systems – we looked basically at OpenFiler and FreeNAS. Both were good enough, and had a sizeable community behind them.

OpenFiler was looking a little more desirable because of the Linux base (FreeNAS has a FreeBSD base). However, I could not wrap my head around the snapshotting system. Moreover, the backup methodology was a bit too weird. Incremental backup was simply too difficult (Amanda?).

Eventually, my search led me to ZFS – it is a filesystem built to simplify enterprise-scale data management. It handles everything – striping, mirroring, backups, incremental-backups, etc. at the filesystem level. It is free and opensource – developed by the wizards at Sun. Moreover, companies like Netapp (whose enterprise systems cost hundreds of thousands of dollars) have been embroiled with Sun over intellectual property rights on ZFS – I dont want to go into which one was first, just that they are both technically great.

What’s the catch? ZFS has an opensource license which makes it incompatible with Linux’s GPL2.

Enter the ZFS-FUSE project – a way to get around the GPL2 by linking the ZFS filesystem with a user-mode driver (rather than the kernel). Both FreeNAS (based on FreeBSD) and Nexenta (a distribution built on OpenSolaris) have ZFS included – but I really preferred using a Linux based distribution.

ZFS-Fuse can be installed as part of the Ubuntu package manager, however it is a very old release (0.5.0). Instead, I checked it out from the repository and built it – well actually I redid the build system and contributed that patchset back to zfs-fuse.

how ZFS-Fuse works

Create a pool using sudo zpool create tank /dev/sdb1 . I like to think of a zfs pool as a one-to-one relationship between usable free space and it’s underlying hardware. At this point, you can create zpools of various types – like RAIDZ, etc. ZFS-Fuse will create a directory called /tank in your root.

Going forward you can seamlessly grow the pool using sudo zpool add tank /dev/sdb2 . No need to use third-party software to resize disks, etc.

When you attach a blank disk to your compute, the raw disk (without any partitions) is addressable using monikers like /dev/sda /dev/sdb , etc. while partitions (after creation) are addressable using /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 , etc. It is advisable to create one partition (using gparted), since if you dont, the zfs volumes are not portable across linux and solaris – this is because zfs implicitly creates a partition on Solaris, while Linux doesnt.

Once a pool is created/managed, you never need to bother about the hardware again.

Create a filesystem using zfs create tank/filesystem1 . I like to think of a filesystem as a logical unit of management (as opposed to a pool, which has a hardware relationship) - in the same pool, I can have a read-only filesystem, an encrypted filesystem, etc.

To set the filesystem as readonly, do sudo zfs set readonly=yes tank/filesystem1

Delete a filesystem (or pool) by sudo zfs destroy tank/filesystem (or sudo zpool destroy tank). You may have to use the -r flag to destroy the filesystem and all its contained snapshots.

Snapshots

In ZFS snapshots are instantaneous using sudo zfs snapshot tank/fileserver@snapshot1 .

ZFS is a copy-on-write filesystem – which means that if you have snapshotted something and you overwrite the file, it will not actually overwrite the file, it makes copies (however it is smart enough not to copy the entire file, only at the block level).

In Solaris, you can navigate your snapshots by going in a special .zfs directory and having all snapshots available as aseparate directory. In ZFS-Fuse on Linux, this facility is not available (yet). However one can create a clone (which is also instantaneous and does not occupy extra space) by doing sudo zfs clone tank/fileserver1@snapshot1 tank/restore and you will instantaneously get a new directory /tank/restore which has the contents of your snapshot1.

Backup

To backup, you need to create a snapshot – this allows your users to keep working and for you to know that you are backing up a known state.

Full backup - sudo zfs send tank/fileserver1@snapshot2 > /media/externaldisk/backup.snapshot2

Incremental backup – sudo zfs send -i tank/fileserver1@sourcesnapshot tank/fileserver1@newsnapshot > /media/externalsdisk/backup.incremental_wrt_newsnapshot

Restore

Full restore – sudo zfs receive tank/newfileserver < /media/externaldisk/backup.snapshot

Incremental restore – sudo zfs receive tank/newfileserver < /media/externaldisk/backup.snapshot_wrt_original

(you may have to use the -f flag to force, since even doing an ls seems to make zfs think that the restore has been modified)

Mirror

After you have added a new hard-disk and created a new partition on it, you can mirror your pool by doing sudo zpool attach tank /dev/existingpartition /dev/newpartition

One of the things that happened to me was that actually a 320 GB hdd doesnt have 320gb exactly – the addressable disk space varies according to model and/or manufacturer. A mirror can only be added if its size is greater than or equal to existing pool. What happened to me was that the new disk I got actually had a few hundred mb lesser than the original – which meant I got an error of disk is not big enough. What I then did was to create a new pool on the newer disk – copy over everything, destroy the previous pool and add that as the mirror.

My current el-cheapo setup

Two 320GB SATA hard disk as a mirror and a 80GB IDE harddisk as the OS. I snapshot everyday for a week and then cleanup the next week. We do a full backup every monday and incremental backup every weekday. Your paranoia level may differ. If anybody screws up and wants to recover an older version of the fileserver – I simply clone a previous snapshot (as detailed above) and make it available.

I share this pool using samba. You may need to set the startup sequence (Linux distribution dependent) to start samba after zfs-fuse has already started up.

Vibe.com’s media kit boasts 1.6 million monthly unique users and 8 million monthly page views. With these facts, Vibe.com seems an ideal place for advertisers looking to reach the urban and hip-hip community.

The site isn’t cluttered with advertisements though. There is normally one main advertisement as the background and not much else. Currently, the television network Fuse claims the page. The ad is for what the network calls its “Hip Hop Invasion,” a special presentation of the movie “Hustle and Flow.” This background advertising will of course have to change after the date of presentation, and does so regularly. Most often it shows advertising for a new album that is being released.

There are also small advertisements at the top of each story and next to the headline. Most advertising actually comes in the form of the stories featured on Vibe.com. Artists, albums, movies, television shows, even rapper Ludacris’ new cognac get a boost from the short articles posted daily. This seems more effective than scattering ads throughout the content. The audience cares more to hear, see or become informed about a product through print then a tiny flashing box.

First off, Happy Thanksgiving. Enjoy your sweet potatoes, collard greens, tofurky (or the real thing

First off, Happy Thanksgiving. Enjoy your sweet potatoes, collard greens, tofurky (or the real thing), ham, whatever you grub on these days.

This week-long break has come at the perfect moment, a time when the library is filled to the brim and other study halls have students pouring out from every opening, but somehow the work has seeped into my holiday plans. Don’t get me wrong. I love what I’m studying at Bates, some might argue that it consumes me, but I honesty cannot have a conversation without talking about -isms and patriarchal reflections on society. Between reading Laura Mulvey and Black Sexual Politics, I have been taking every moment I have to watch Lady Gaga-related things on television. Somehow, amidst talking about contemporary music videos and arguably “the new racism”, my entire Black Feminist Thought class watched Lady Gaga’s new music video “Bad Romance”. For those of you who haven’t seen it, I’ve embedded it below.

Assuming you did your part and watched the music video, you might agree with me and most pop culture critics who say that it is a little wacky. Between the live auction for Gaga, that crazy looking cat, and the final scene, there’s much to look into. Anyway, after spending weeks talking about female exploitation in music videos and other mediums, a classmate of mine rose her hand and brought up this Lady Gaga video. She wanted to point out that there are some music videos that clearly try to shift focus from the usual overtly sexual and patriarchal images. My professor was intrigued so we got on the classroom’s computer, projected the music video, and watched it as a class. Everyone was really interested in the images and after theorizing about the different things going on and whether they are conceptual or not, Professor Houchins said we’d continue the conversation after break.

I must admit, I hadn’t really listened to Lady Gaga before last week so I’ve spent some (or maybe a ton) of my vacation watching her television interviews and watching more of her videos, hoping I see some trends. I still haven’t decided if she is a provider of social commentary or just a self righteous artist who claims to have “mind-blowing, irresponsible, condomless sex with whatever idea it is [she's] writing about at the time.” Maybe she’s both… I’m just waiting patiently until Tuesday to see what my professor has to say. In the mean time, I’ll just watch it one more time.

Peace and then some,

With some time off this week from work I committed myself over the weekend to getting this pile of parts primed so I can actually assemble some small things that can then be made into bigger things. The biggest hurdle has been that bitch Mother Nature. She’s been my spray booth ever since I discovered that DIY spray booths in the basement can be grounds for divorce (and brain damage). I finally found my answer at a local state run institution of higher learning that happens to have a number of spray rooms in their art building. Climate controlled and the fumes are vented out the roof. PERFECT! Sunday I was able to wash, clean, etch my entire collection of parts at home. Then I primed until I ran our of primer. Ugh! So today I finished up the last few parts at the school and have them laid out and drying in the garage. Now it’s time for the squeezer to come out!
