I discovered this wonderful thing called Future Shorts on Youtube. Its a platform for filmmakers to display their work to the world. Every month there is a Future Shorts events and people get together and see what filmmakers have made. It is based in the UK but has a You tube page which constantly updates with new films.

The Yellow Smiley Face

Dir: Constantin Popescu / Romania / 2008

Concept: “A heartwarming comedy of parents using a computer for the first time to communicate with their son in America” Futureshorts, Youtube.

Why I liked it: although it goes on for quite awhile..gets a bit annoying sometimes (the length is 14 minutes roughly), I thought it was a great idea- making a movie about the Y generation’s parents and grandparents who are not familiar with the technology of today which we as a younger generation can easily grasp. I loved it also because it was made cleverly with only 2 characters. It didn’t need special effects and action pact theme to keep us as a viewer intrigued constantly. The humor did it all and the great story telling of these two people who are no idea how to operate a computer!

The News

Dir: Luke Shanahan / Australia / 2009

Concept: “Gina and Daniel are madly in love. They arrange to meet at the café where they first met each with exciting, news.”

Why I liked it: Concept used a shock factor. It totally caught by surprise. I thought the script was really well written, it was also very well shot and again, only based it around two characters which can be challenging!

Amazing short film label Future Shorts have teamed up with Ketel 1 vodka to bring you The Spirit of Film, a celebration of the skills and craftsmanship of short film-making. The evening starts with a number of vodka masterclasses followed by an hour of pioneering short films and an exclusive Q&A session from the Directors afterwards. Future Shorts is recognised by filmmakers and the industry as a cutting-edge short film label.

We think it sounds pretty good.

On Youtube this morning, and I dont usually click on the featured videos, but this one caught my eye. It was the mans face they used as the thumbnail. He looked like he had a story to tell, something to say.

Lift – Directed byMarc Isaccs – UK – 200

Filmmaker Marc Isaacs sets himself up in a London tower block lift. The residents come to trust him and reveal the things that matter to them creating a humorous and moving portrait of a vertical community.

Watch. You wont regret it. It shows another side to people, a human side, a real side. Going about their daily lives and giving a small piece to the man with the camera in their lift….

Muffin Hix '06

For the past year or so, Muffin Hix ‘06 has been living the film lovers dream.  She is employed by the short film festival and distribution company known as Future Shorts, and lives in one of the most exciting cities in the world, London, England.  And the crazy thing is that her interest in film did not take on an active role until she began taking classes at the College of William and Mary.  Muffin was kind enough to take some time away from watching movies and hanging out with international filmmakers to answer a few questions from The Film Tribe.

The Film Tribe (TFT): What did you major in at W&M?

Muffin Hix (MH): I majored in English and minored in Film Studies. I really loved all my classes with Prof. Sasha Prokhorov – he was always really enthusiastic and passionate about what he was teaching. His class on Film Comedy was fantastic.

(TFT): When you moved to London, you took a few filmmaking courses, specifically the 2Inspire Digital Film course and 16mm Filmmaking at City University.  What did you get out of those experiences?

(MH):  At W&M I only took film theory classes and none of the practical stuff. Then when I moved to London, I worked as a production assistant on a feature documentary (The Age of Stupid – see it!) and got more interested in making films.  [I am] thinking of perhaps going into producing. The digital and 16mm courses I took covered everything from pre to post production on a short film. I found that I love cinematography, and detest directing. There are several shorts that I made available online, but I hope no one ever sees them – sometimes first efforts are better left in the classroom.

(TFT): So what exactly do you do at Future shorts?

(MH):  I first joined Future Shorts in May 2008 as a programming intern, and then was accepted for a full time position as a distribution assistant in November 2008. Future Shorts is still a young company, so what we do is constantly changing, but at the moment, I would consider myself to be a distirbution and festival assistant and filmmaker liaison. What does that mean? I am the primary contact for the filmmakers that we want to include in our worldwide festival, special screening events, youtube channel, and distribution label. I also manage online communication (twitter, youtube, facebook, newsletter, website news) and all incoming and current interns throughout the company.  By far, my favorite part of the job is working with talented, enthusiastic filmmakers and getting [their] films seen all over the world, and even getting them a little cash for it as well, when possible. It’s a lovely thing.

(TFT): How many short films would you say you watch in a given week?

(MH):  I’m constantly delighted and surprised by the power of animation, and a good twist in the end is always appreciated.

(TFT):  How do you like living in London, and what made you move there?

(MH): I love London. I was drawn back here after visiting during a W&M study abroad at Cambridge, and was just completely hooked. I moved here originally just for a gap year after W&M, but it’s just the city for me. I love that there’s always something to see and do, how each neighborhood is a little village in itself, and the film culture is amazing – there’s always a director giving a Q&A.

(TFT): When you graduated from William and Mary how many different choices as what to do next did you have/consider?

(MH): After I graduated I didn’t know what I wanted to do. All I knew was that I didn’t want to go directly into grad school and that I needed to get out of Williamsburg (after attending high school there as well). I stayed at home working for my mom (she’s an artist) for a few months, but I soon started researching new options in film, media, publishing and arts administration.

Noi credem ca va fi extrem de interesant si de abia asteptam sa vedem scurt-metraje o noapte intreaga.

Video: “Que todos se levanten” por el grupo de artistas Guatemaltecos

El 24 de mayo habrá una reunión multitudinaria en la ciudad de Guatemala.  Miles de guatemaltecos iremos a la calle una vez más y estamos dispuestos a luchar por la paz, la libertad de expresión y el respeto de los derechos de los guatemaltecos.

Está es la información del evento y espero que de nuevo se levanten todos este fin de semana para luchar por nuestra libertad.  Recuerden, el evento se realizará en la Plaza Italia y ya no en el Parque Central.

Who’s gonna hear my voice? Who?

Desde la semana pasada mi mente se secó.  No pude pensar en nada más que escapar del mundo y tan sólo quería hacer que el mundo explotara.  Huí y estaba dispuesto a desconectarme de todo.  En la búsqueda por un escape tan sólo pude encontrar la esperanza de que todo aún puede mejorar y respiré.  Tomé un café y perseguí los besos de la persona que me quiere, sólo en sus brazos me podía proteger.

Guatemala no cambiará y los guatemaltecos seguirán sufriendo las mismas penas.  Y lo digo sin ningún afán pesimista; esto en realidad es lo que me incentiva a gritar ahora con más fuerza y a denunciar a los malditos líderes que de una u otra forma gobiernan nuestras mentes con saña y cólera; ya no tendré más misericordia por los ignorantes y mucho menos por los que se atreven a engañar a las mentes simples.

Así como me propuse antes aspirar a la felicidad como un juramente a mi vida lo seguiré haciendo hoy y mañana.  Yo digo, ¡basta ya! y si se atreven a tomar esta decisión los invito a unirse a este grito.

La semana pasada es histórica para mí.  Porque, no sólo participé en la manifestación de personas dignas más grande que la historia de Guatemala ha registrado; sino, porque también pude colaborar en la liberación de Jeanfer.

Enhorabuena por las buenas noticias a pesar de los sustos y lágrimas que derramamos la semana pasada.  Los hombres buenos somos los que podremos dormir en paz y es inevitable que ganemos,

Shortfilm: Maybe One Day

A couple weeks ago somebody linked me a video of Beyonce’s performance on the Today Show, with a comment akin to “omg wtf.” I thought, what in the hell could warrant such a reaction from a Beyonce video? Thinking maybe she shows outrageous side-boob or top-crack, I gleefully followed the link.

What I found is the work of a master.

That master, however, is not Beyonce. The visuals of the video are from her real performance, but her vocals are awful – jaw-cringingly, eye-wincingly awful. Someone who is obviously super busy, not to mention content with his life, is creating viral videos slandering artists he presumably doesn’t like.

Warning: What you are about to see may disturb you and family members.

A Coldplay one also came to my attention last night:

Now, I’m not particularly enamored with either artist, so this is not a huge deal to me. The problem, though, is that now it is going to become impossible to distinguish the real videos from the real bad videos. In other words, how are we supposed to know who can sing worth a damn anymore?
