Eric Fisher has unearthed and scanned proto-BART plans from 1956. Some fascinating detail, including a Marin line routing along Kearny, Columbus and down Lombard (instead of Geary in later not-to-be plans).

Various alternatives were presented.  One included underground stations for the Marin line at Lombard & Van Ness, with a tunnel under Russian hill to Columbus & Green, and a terminus at California & Kearny.  Both elevated and suspended trains were considered.

A few different options were proposed for downtown.

One was a tunnel from the East Bay meeting with the Marin terminus at California, dodging over to Market as we know today, then continuing down Valencia.

The alternative would have come in from the East Bay over the Bay Bridge and run above Mission (with stops at 4th and 8th).

The Peninsula line would have dangled above Valencia (with stops at 14th and 22nd), then cut down Tiffany Ave to a tunnel at Dolores & San Jose, exiting around Bosworth, with a station at Ocean.

The plans show the line continuing south down the Peninsula to Palo Alto with a maintenance yard at Arastradero.

All sorts of crazy detailed suggestions for Marin, and past Palo Alto to Santa Clara / San Jose / Los Gatos (no 280 or 880 yet!) More can be seen on this system-wide map and the rest of the detailed maps on Eric’s Flickr stream.

I was talking with someone recently about the Waikato River water that provides some 10% of the drinking water in Auckland. This was approved despite much protest, on the basis that Metrowater would only use it in emergencies. I suspect that Mayor George Wood at the time knew that it would end up being turned on all the time, as part of his deal with his crony mayors.

The water was declared safe by WHO standards, however councillor Joel Cayford, who is now employed by ARC said that it was unsafe. I attended the public meeting where he explained that WHO standards listed a number of quality requirements, but excluded many ingredients such as dioxins, heavy metals, fertiliser and more. In my opinion the meeting wasn’t helped by constant interjections from rent a protester, which didn’t help the cause.

Not long after approval was given by the regional mayors, including the Mayor Bob Harvey of Waitakere who approved it on the condition that Waitakere water would only come from local dams in the rainforest, thus not having to take this water.

What has this got to do with dead zones in the ocean? Well here’s the thing. A lot of the objections against using Waikato river water were because it contains huge amounts of leached chemicals from farms including fertiliser, antibiotics and much more. It appears that these same types of chemicals are flowing from rivers around the world into the sea and several studies are suggesting that the rise in industrial food production is increasing the number of dead zones rapidly.

Oceanic dead zones are areas where the oxygen levels in the water are so low that they kill of almost all forms of marine life. There are now more than 400 oceanic dead zones around the world and they are growing fast.

According to experts, including NASA a major contributor to these dead zones is fertiliser that flows to the ocean from farms both in the form of chemicals leaching from farms and from the animal manure which still contains these chemicals. The nitrogen and phosphorous feeds the algae and phytoplankton, making these plants grow rapidly.

In New Zealand, we have become aware of algal bloom. This is occurring more commonly now both in coastal waters, such as our local Waiheke Island, and also in freshwater lakes, including many in the Waikato, where 10% of our drinking water is coming from.

So what does this mean? We know that fresh water is going to be on of the important issues in the future, both from climate change and from man-made intervention. We know that our oceans are becoming polluted, much of it from man-made waste. We know that the fish stocks are becoming depleted in many parts of the world, due to over fishing, to feed growing nations. But fish are also now seriously at risk from the oceanic dead zones, where oxygen levels are so low that fish and other marine life can’t survive.

We seem to be in danger of creating the ‘unrealistic and unbelievable’ wasted planet that is often depicted on science fiction movies.Am I exaggerating? Well check these examples out:

A dead zone the size of New Jersey of the coast of Oregon and Washington, may be irreversible.

The Mississippi Delta dead zone is one of the smaller ones in the world, only 3,000 square miles. The US Government is investing $320 million to try to slow it down, but as long as the chemicals keep flowing down and farm production is increased, we have a problem.

The Baltic sea apparently contains 7 of the 10 worst oceanic dead zones and it appears that the surrounding countries haven’t been doing much about them. The end result could be the loss of almost all marine life in the area. This map shows how bad it is in places, where the red areas represent areas where the water essentially contains no oxygen.

It appears that the man-made damage to the oceans and lakes in the world could present an even greater problem than global warming and of course one that is compounded by it. If so much water ends up unable to sustain life, how will we survive, especially the poorer areas on the planet, where water is already scarce. The sea’s health is not something we can take for granted, no matter how vast it appears. The attractive colours of algae bloom that we sea coming back each summer in bigger areas, is evidence that we need to change some of our ways, and quickly.

You narrow minded nationalists are so backward in your thinking that you are blind to what is moving forward and what is moving backward in the history of mankind and in the evolution of matter in motion!
Like they say, “YOU CAN’T STOP PROGRESS,” ..That being an observable fact, it is only ignorance and fear that is representative of those on the “Right Wing” of the political spectrum that causes those “Right Wing Reactionaries” to be no longer relevant, …and to fear and hate progress.
It is a part of the “Evolutionary Process” for everything in our universe to change and adapt in a manner that would allow all forms of matter and all that reflects all forms of matter to make necessary adjustments so that it could survive, thrive grow and mature in an ever changing environment, an environment that moves in stages from a simple beginning to more complex stage. Everything has a life span and when it is necessary for that which has grown old and weak and no longer useful it is natural for that form of live matter to die and be replaced by something that is new and is it’s diametric opposite. An opposite that is stronger, more relevant, more in tune with the circumstances, situations and conditions that prevail at that particular point in time.
Those that hold on to the theory that “Individual Competition” is more important and better than, “Social Cooperation” are acting blindly because they are ignoring the context.
Under the conditions of scarcity of that which is necessary to survive and thrive, all living things will, because out of necessity, become a competitor for that which is scarce and therefor valuable.
To get what is scarce and what is needed before that what is scarce is all grabbed up by the competition and you are wanting and not getting, is the kind of environment that exists inside of a competitive society This competition exists because of material scarcity. “The Human Nature” of individuals living under the conditions of scarcity will act in an aggressive and desperate manner to get what is scarce for themselves.
Because of scarcity and competition, “STATUS” will go to those that accumulate for themselves the most of that which is valuable, because it is scarce.
The “HUMAN NATURE” of those that live under the conditions of “Material Abundance,” will act in a “Cooperative” manner because the need to compete will not be necessary because there will be enough of what is needed to satisfy everyone and no one will go wanting.
Status under these conditions will be arrived at by what you do for others, the opposite of what you can do for yourselves under a competitive condition.
It is new and advanced “Technological and Scientific” development that will make it possible to produce an abundant material society that will change the nature of the people within that society, and will change the nature of that cooperative social society.
It has been said that when people living under conditions where they receive from each according to their ability and to each according to their need, that in time a new type of human being will be born. It will be a “Social Scientific Being” that will need no one to force that type of person to be social. He or she will have no need to have a leader or government agency tell them what they should or should not do. They will become their own leader and understand scientifically the world environment and how to advance the interests of the world environment and the interests of the individuals within that world environment. It has been said that under this condition of harmony between people and environment that the need, for written laws police, soldiers, and courts, will no longer be needed and that the state apparatus will wither away. That in place of government and their apparatus you will have an administration of things, not an administration of people.

This is an early Futurist painting by the Italian artist Umberto Boccioni painted in 1910. Although painted in a Post-Impressionist style it is considered Futurist as the subject is of a busy industrial scene rather than a traditional, quiet country landscape. In the background industrial buildings, cables and smoke are visible and the foreground is taken up by straining work horses and lunging, active work men. The bright reds, yellows and lighter blue colours give the painting an intense, active, noisy feel enforced by Boccioni’s use of sharp and expressive brush strokes.

The Futurists did not limit themselves to any particular visual style or medium. They practiced their art in words, music, painting, architectural design and sculpture. However, Futurist art works focussed intensely and rigidly in their subject matter – industry, speed, cars, locomotives, noisy city life, the urban landscape. Quite a change from the tranquil landscapes of the Impressionists.

The world will become an integrated global village that will fight war no more because to do so would not be productive and it would not be necessary because their will be enough of material wealth to go around and satisfy all the basic needs of all the people everywhere.
Science will rule, and nations and religions will fall to the wayside and no longer divide earthlings from one another.
Bigotry born out of tribalism will be a thing of the past and all ignorance promoted by ambitious opportunists that profit by exploiting the simple minded non thinking bigots of the world will become no longer possible inside an environment of social consciousness and world cooperation.
A world planned economy that is designed by social scientists to profit all of the people in the world without discrimination will replace the outmoded market economy that was designed to only profit selfish individual capitalist owners. The capitalist owners of the means of production will no longer be allowed to exploit the world population of those that work for a living.
I know that all of what I have written here will come to be, because it is the only thing that can come to be.

It is certainly possible to give economic security and produce a material abundance for all of the people in the world, It is possible to eliminate scarcity and material deprivation and by doing so you can create a new type of individual that has a new human nature that reflects his secure environment so that their will no longer be the need to be in conflict with the environment and with the people inside that environment.
What makes this new social condition possible is the modern advances in science and technology that can and will transform what exists today under the conditions of artificial scarcity into a world economy, of from each according to their ability and to each according to their need!
This condition of a world wide social cooperation will come to be, because if the planet is to survive and if future generations are to be born, it can only be so if the people on the planet cooperate in doing so,
The end of the individual competitive era of scarcity, will be transformed into a beginning of the social cooperative era of plenty! …Thanks to the increasing development of modern technology and the new increasing developments in science!

The “American Economy,” is no longer small individual enterprises of rugged individualists competing to become bigger than they were!
To survive and compete in todays global market, you have to lose your individualist identity, and become a part of a large conglomerate, a Global Multi National Corpotation. You have to become a part of a global enterprise that is larger and more powerful than most governments, in order to be a player in the world of “Free Enterprise!”
You can believe that you are a small businessman opperating a small business and that you and your kind are the foundation that makes America great. You can believe that, and the world will continue to laugh at you. You Libertarians are lost inside the no longer existing past! Wake up and face our present day global reality.
Every educated person knows, or should know, that everything on the planet is structured to evolve so as to survive inside a changing environment. If anything or anyone does not or cannot make a necessary adjustment to a changing environment, that what exists will no longer be able to exist into the future!
Capitalism has grown into the stage of “Globalism,” because it is the only way that capitalism can evolve and grow, and not die and not realize it’s full potential.
Capitalisim cannot move back into the way it was during the early history of America, just like a old man cannot recapture his youth.
If you allow yourself to view the world scientificaly, you cannot help but come to the conclusion that the only possible alternative to a Free Market Economy is a Controled Market Economy, and the only possible alternative to a “World Controled Market Economy is a “World Planned Market Economy” that is designed to profit the entire planet without discrimination!

The corrupting world wide, private enterprise, of the “Narcotics Trade, the “Prostitution Rings,” the corrupting influence of government politicians, on the take, being bought off, and treated like a valuable commodity, by the “Merchants of world wide “Private Capital.” These “Free enterprise merchants of death, that starts world wars, so that they can make “Blood Money” on the backs of the ordinary citizen soldiers.
This powerful capitalist oligarchy, that has power that is all consuming and is of global proportion, dwarfs our government, and every government on the planet. This insidious, global private sector, causes more damage, then governments, because it has bought off most of the politicians and corrupted them, and infiltrated governments on the entire planet. It is this conglomeration of world wide capitalist rule, that rules the people of the world, with an iron hand.

Those that are a part of our PRIVATE SECTOR, …for the sake of making a profit, has and had, … made a “Pact, With The Devil,” …and the “PUBLIC BE DAMNED!”
By pretending that the “GOVERNMENT is the ENEMY,” those that can’t see too well, are distracted from the real enemy, and that enemy is the global oligarchy, of “Capitalist Blood Suckers,” that are intent on continuing their bloody war, on the average, ordinary citizen.
These criminal, PRIVATE ENTERPRISE, world wide syndicates, are fighting this criminal murderous war, all over our capitalist planet.
Only a planned “Socialist Economy,” can rid our planet of the corrupting influence of the private enterprise of criminal gang activity, that is organized to compete, kill, rape, and murder, …for profit and power!

In all honesty we got a pretty good deal of this, though BART along Geary/Broadway and on the Golden Gate Bridge would have been a pretty epic ride. (And a crosstown BART down Divisidero-Castro-Noe-30th Street-SFO would work for me too. Just don’t turn off that tunneling machine, Gavin.)

Last Thursday I spoke at the TEDx event held in Auckland (TEDx is a program of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience).

It was a brilliantly organised event, and I was honoured to be involved. My presentation as the ‘Reluctant Futurist’ was on the Danger of Now, and the slides are available here on our website. Photos from the event are available here on Flickr, and videos will hopefully be available on the TEDx website soon.

My thanks to all involved, the excellent audience, and Richard and the team at the Department of Doing for all of their hard work.
