Sorry about the lack of content from me. I have been fairly under the press lately. But still, thats no excuse.

This week it’s all about the Dutch Hardcore! This is not what it is normally known as. It has many names some of which are: Hardcore, Industrial Hardcore, “True” Hardcore, Dutch Hardcore or the most common iteration; Gabber/Gabba (for the purists among you: Nu Gabber… Wankers).

The term Gabber/Gabba translates loosely to “Friend” in Dutch and let me preface this by saying that there is NOTHING friendly about Gabber. It focuses on strong, heavy and distorted basslines that run a fairly similar tone through the track. Some of my more Death Metal inclined friends are very adamant in their description of Gabber as the “Death Metal of Electronica” and I would be in remiss to deny that this is a fairly good description.

I enjoy a fair bit of extreme metal, I must say so that puts me in a good position to enjoy Gabber. For those who may like a bit of the louder stuff in their musical diet, give this a shot. It will blow your socks off.

Now for some technical information. It is generally played at 140-180 BPM and is the stylistic precursor to Happy (UK) Hardcore, Hardstyle, Jumpstyle and a few others. Another fact that may help is that like most faster Dance

Music (or most Dance music in general), it is played in a 4/4 time signature (basically 1-2-3-4 for each bar. You can count it out a home).

With all of that talk out of the way, let’s get on to the review shall we.

I have been listening to Gabber for a long time and I have built up a few favourites in the last year. Some are new, some are older. I will write about 2 of my absolute favourite Gabber tracks ever: Ophidian – Pegasus and Kutski Vs Bioweapon – One (Endymion Remix)

First off: Ophidian – Pegasus

I am going to preface this by saying that Ophidian refers to himself as Experimental Gabber and is by no means the norm in the style.

For those who don’t know, the term “Ophidian” refers to snakes and for those who live under rocks and speak entirely in grunts, Pegasus is the son of Poseidon and is a winged horse. Cool? FUCK yes!

Anyway, the track starts off with some industrial sounding scratching which evolves when the traditional Gabber bass is added. It then starts going haywire when a trancelike melody is added and the drums start playing in a breakbeat style. This is particularly hard to get right but when you consider that it keeps its 4/4 time signature, it is amazing. This is partly why I like this track so much.

The track is quite emotional for Gabber, most of which features misogyny, profanity, drugs and violence. The barely audible words that are spoken during the verse (refer to my first review for clarification) are as follows:

Sing for me

I will smile and touch your hair
And dare to sing along when I know the words
For we are at best in a blended voice, and thought, and flesh

There is too much to be lost in the world
Love is, and was, and will be regent, regret wets sweated sins

This is from a romantic poem by american poet William F. DeVault entitled “The Philosophy of Dreams”. Of the whole poem, only these lines actually resonate with me. Yes I listened to the poem after hearing this song. Moving along.

The build-up after the verse and moving into the chorus is played in a minor key and sounds somewhat regretful.  None the less, it builds up to an amazing climax into the chorus which is just powerful.

I honestly don’t know what else to say about this track other than, despite it being released in 2008 and that I
have listened to it so many times, it still drops my jaw to the ground. It is one of my favourite tracks of all time.

This is a must listen.

I give it an outstanding 9/10

Now, Kutski Vs Bioweapon – One (Endymion Mix)

Ok, I don’t know much about Kutski but I can tell you about Bioweapon and Endymion. Bioweapon are a Sydney based production team made up of two of Australia’s best Happy (UK) Hardcore producers turned Hardstyle producers. If you have been following them at all, they are Sam Gonzalez (or Orbit1) and Corey Soljan (or Inverse). They were a powerhouse in the Happy Hardcore scene and now are making an obvious impression on the Hardstyle genre.

“One” is a strange track to say the least, both within the Hardstyle and Gabber scenes. It uses a sample from “Three Dog Night – One Is The Loneliest Number” which makes me confused already. How did they turn such a song into such a Hard Dance anthem. It is definitely one that we will be hearing at clubs that play this sort of music.

Endymion is a powerhouse of the Gabber scene and makes a significant contribution to the evolution of the music. This track is amazing in itself but the remix just blows my mind.

The track starts out with a soft almost trance sounding set of synth-strings and a woman repeating “one” Which is obviously sampled because it is cut constantly up. Then the bass comes in. It is a much smoother sounding bass than what is normally used in Gabber. The slow breaks and buildups that feature over this track make it distinctive and memorable and the melody is just amazing. Exceptional use of triplets are all over the melody of this track.

I urge you to listen to this track.

I give it an exceptional 8/10

LUCCA – Lo picchiavano ogni volata che lo vedevano, così senza un motivo. In sette contro uno. A volte lo riprendevano anche con il cellulare. È l’accusa per la quale, a Lucca, la questura ha denunciato sette ragazzi, componenti della banda dei cosiddetti «Gabber», che si sarebbero resi protagonisti di atti di bullismo nei confronti di un ragazzo di 14 anni . Le indagini sono iniziate dopo la denuncia dei genitori di alcuni ragazzini, che hanno raccontato aggressioni e minacce subite senza motivo da coetanei in centro storico.

IL GRUPPO DEI «GABBER» – Dopo una serie di controlli, gli agenti ha individuato un gruppo di cosiddetti «Gabber», giovani cioè accomunati dalla passione per la musica hardcore. Sono una ventina, tra i 14 e i 15 anni, e hanno lo stesso look: cappellino, testa rasata, marsupio e scarpe da basket. Il loro divertimento sarebbe quello di prendere di mira e terrorizzare i loro coetanei. In base a quanto raccontato dal ragazzo che ha denunciato le aggressioni, una volta, mentre lo percuotevano, la scena sarebbe anche stata ripresa con un telefonino. Dopo alcune settimane il ragazzo e altre due coetanei hanno raccontato tutto ai genitori. Sette appartenenti al gruppo dei sono stati così identificati e segnalati alla procura dei minori di Firenze per atti persecutori, lesioni, ingiurie, minacce e diffamazione.

Sabe aquelas raves que acontecem num inferninho, onde tem gente vestida de homem-máquina, cabelo colorido, alienígenas, muito glow-stick e tinta florescente? Bem-vindo ao mundo clubber Gabber e Hardstyle.

Hard Techno (ou Hardcore, ou Hardstyle)

Se fosse pra eu chutar de onde saiu o termo “bate-estaca”, eu diria que foi do momento em que alguém escutou Hardstyle. É um tipo de música sem tom, com um ritmo constante feito com sons industriais distorcidos. É criado com moduladores e sequenciadores musicais. Aproximadamente 15 divisões foram criadas pro Hardstyle, mas são tão parecidos que eu desconsidero quase todas. As letras (quando existem) geralmente são faladas e tem um tema bem dark – caindo pra uma tendência que batizaram de “Terrorcore” e chamaram de sub-gênero. Outro nome que criaram foi o “Happycore” que é quando se mistura elementos de Hard Dance, e as letras falam mais de emoções, com um vocal até um pouquinho mais melódico. Tem ainda estilos de Hardcore que vão acima de 700 BPM (chamados Splittercore) e acima de 1.000 BPM, podendo chegar a até – pasmem! – 15.000 BPM, recebendo o nome de Extracore (ou Extratone).  Minha gente, me perdoem, mas aí já é loucura demais…

Gabber (ou Gabba)

Há quem diga que esse é um dos vários estilos de Hardcore, e realmente eles possuem uma ligação muito forte, mas eu não concordo com essa afirmação. O Gabber fica entre 180 e 220 BPM, tem um bass bem característico e é cheio de distorção, principalmente nos vocais – que geralmente são falados, e tratam de violência, drogas ou do “orgulho de ser hardcore”. O principal elemento que me faz diferenciar o Gabber é a presença de um pouco de tom, totalmente inexistente no Hardcore. Isso ajuda na distinção. O Gabber mexe muito com distorção e com o pitch das músicas, subindo a níveis em que as vezes as batidas nem podem ser distinguidas umas das outras.

Antes de as raves serem feitas com Psy Trance por Santa Catarina, elas tinham outro estilo. Até a Rivage em Blumenau tinha uma festa considerada a primeira rave do estado, chamada Rave-o-Lution. Era famosíssima na região, mas foi extinta quando o governo começou a vetar esse tipo de  balada. Eles misturavam hard house, techno, electro, e até tocavam Psy, mas o esquema era um pouco diferente, e fechava com Gabber e Hardcore. Se isso tocasse em uma balada da região catarinense nos dias de hoje, seria sinônimo de mandar todo mundo embora… Ninguém tolera mais esses gêneros, ao menos por aqui.

Agora, pra finalizar, quer ouvir uma coisa que vai derreter o seu cérebro explodir os seus poros e sangrar seus ouvidos? Aí vai um exemplo de um Extratone de aproximadamente 15.000 BPM, que eu citei mais acima no post. Segue o link:

Who say’s that there is no history left in Calgary!?  Looks like we have the privilege of living in a neighbourhood with several historic buildings just around the corner! Check out the photos below of only some of the gems we can find on 1^st Street SW.

The picture above was taken in 1910.  The first building on the left was once an aerie of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and became, as we know it, the Night Galley Building (now home to Forman’s fashion group).  The two story building up the street was burned down and was replaced by the Drum and Monkey building in the 1920s.  The building in between these two was formerly a club called “The Depression” where Joni Mitchell launched her career in the 1960s and is now home of Giuseppe’s Market.

The tall building in the distance is the Grain Exchange building, once one of Alberta’s tallest buildings.  The Grain Exchange building, built in 1909 for $164,000, has managed to survive the wrecking ball and can still be found 815 1 Street S.W. with a number of private and non-profit organizations as tenants.  Below is a picture of the Grain Exchange Building in 1912.

Some of the new businesses of 1^st Street SW have also made a point of preserving the historic importance of the street by reusing heritage buildings.  The 27 storey Union Square condo tower has incorporated the Underwood Block Annex into its design.  The old Edwardian era building was constructed in 1911, and was used as an office for the Mayor of Calgary in the early 1900s.  Check out the “Then & Now” photo  below of this remarkable building and it’s recent transformation.

so he makes like the abovely titular slightly retarded venetian snares.  which i mean in a positive way.  i.e. less fucked up stuttering syncopated 7/4 beats.  musically all a bit like gleefully punching someones face.  while wearing a giant foam hand.  with jizzmopper scrawled on it.  in old mans jizz.

bangford does the repulsive (girls eating shit) slash nonsense (billie holiday vs a life of jazz & drugs) slash sniggering juvenile (cunt of the month) song titles too.

anyway if you dig shitmat or dj scotch egg or venetian snares (no idea why filth hasn’t made it on here…) or like me you used to read terrorizer and occasionally dip yr toe into the gabba / breakcore / dubstep waters amongst entombed / carcass listening then y’ll find something to amuse yrself here.

it’s fun.  it’s stupid clever.  it’s free (the ravers ep is fucking ace).  and if that don’t float yr boat, get yr goat, sway yr swithering mongbrain then this should: he samples stewart lee on the braindamaged primitive, i’m in oil. and the magic roundabout thang puts me in mind of chris morris’ jam.  musical firsts surely?

gabba , is a style of electronic music and a subgenre of hardcore techno

that what wiki calls it. Gabber is style of music which haves a large BPM [Beats per min] in the song. if you enjoy hardcore or metal you would enjoy this. but there styles some are more harder then other and some are based on other things I like Gabber from one Group called DJ Sharpnel. For the main reason they use anime sound clips in there songs and some times speed it up to go with there music. Warning There songs are fast most people dont like but if you love all type you love this

När jag var liten (slutet på 70-talet) fick jag mitt första kasettband av morsan och det var Kiss – Rock and Roll Over. Under den tiden lyssnade jag även mycket på Noice, Saxon, Accept och Gyllene Tider. I början av 80-talet fick jag höra Depeche Mode första gången och blev helt frälst. Senare under 80-talet blev det tyngre synthmusik såsom Nitzer Ebb, Front 242, Frontline Assembly, à;GRUMH mm. mm. Efter detta blev det mycket Acid och senare kom jag in i rave svängen med mycket techno och trance.

På 90-talet fick jag tack vare Valröss upp öronen för Jungle och drum n bass, men började även lyssna en del på hårdrock och annan vanlig populärmusik. I mitten av 90-talet blev det mycket house för mig och även RnB samt en del hiphop. Under slutet av 90-talet lyssnade jag även mycket på diverse triphop band vilket jag fortfarande gör. Musiken inom ravescenen har aldrig gått ur mig och det blev väldigt mycket lyssnande på de tyngre genrerna såsom hardtrance, hardcore tech och gabber. Drum n bassen blev hårdare och jag tog till mig detta med darkstep i början av 2000-talet.

Nu för tiden lyssnar jag på allt möjligt och det kan vara rätt skönt att ha en så bred musiksmak. När jag började på Högskolan i Skövde 2005 lärde jag känna en kille från Åmål som introducerade mig för den tyngre hårdrocken och det lyssnar jag fortfarande på. Så fort det blir lite finare väder ute och sommaren börjar komma får jag ett sånt sug efter rå, brutal och tung deathmetal och låta denna musik sjunka in tillsammans med ett par bira ibland. Detta är riktigt trevligt. Just nu lyssnar jag väldigt mycket på Lamb of Gods senaste platta Wrath, men Opeth, Scar Symmetry, Slipknot och en massa annan skön tung metal strömmar ur mina högtalare dagarna i ända, men ibland softar jag av till lite lugnare musik också. Men då och då får jag ett rejält sug att lyssna på det tyngsta drum n bass scenen kan ge mig och det är diverse olika darkstep grupper.

Musik för mig är med andra ord ett måste.
