When I was little, one of my favorite stuffed animals was a sock monkey named Turner Gill (formerly the amazing Nebraska QB and current head coach at the University of Buffalo). I’m not sure if I named it, or my parents, but either way we had good taste. So, it was only fitting that Gabe would be given a sock monkey by his Husker loving grandparents. Last night, we held a naming ceremony for the sock monkey. I chose 3 finalists for the name based on their ability as football players, the coolness of their names, and the apparently decent nature of their character. The finalists were Rex Burkhead, Roy Helu Jr., and Ndamukong Suh (with Prince Amukamara coming in a distant 4th). We left the final naming to Gabe. Our method was for Katie to hold up the sock monkey and say a name. Whichever name got the greatest response from Gabe won. Without a doubt, the greatest response and the biggest smile from Gabe came when we announced “heeeeerrrrrreeee’s Ndamukong Suh!” So, the final name of Gabe’s sock monkey is Ndamukong Suh. We’ve decided to just call him “Kong” (but I’m hoping that Gabe can pronounce his full name correctly before Suh gets drafted.)

Alegría means ‘joy’ in Spanish. Alegría was fantastic! it was so so so magical and surreal, watching the whole thing live. and we got really good seats too! ok, the seats were those leftover seats, but it was better than most places. The show was a good way to celebrate the end of my first essay, which I spent 2 hours on, just doing citations (6 citation pages, the horror!!!!)

we left our place at 5.30pm. we were going to meet Gabe at Barakat because he was at Marble Slab Creamery with his friends. We had to introduce Ashley McCallan the white girl Shawarma. it’s those pita kebab things we ate at Mekah and I ate the paper. I DID NOT EAT ANY PAPER THIS TIME!! must be proud. (: Roochi couldn’t/didn’t want to join us because she has to study for her exams, so Gabe joined us instead. We got a 4-pack deal, so it’s cheaper than buy individual tickets.

Ashley trying out Shawarma for the first time in her life. She and I had chicken while Reema had falafel.

this is what I look like after living in Canada for 3 months. 3 months already, next month going home already.

accidents started to happen, and she couldn’t tahan the hot sauce…

the 3 of us… I need to do something about my hair…

Gabe finally arrived. And since we had time to kill, we went to American Apparel. I saw some things that I want to buy to wear in Singapore.

Reema and Gabe. I don’t know why they were holding the mannequin. I think someone wanted to check the material of the underwear. I don’t know.

Did I mention that I love this girl? She is the most random person I know. And to think that I never spoke a word to her during O-Week, now she’s my personal confidant.

fake metal maple trees.

Christmas decorations are up. Also, Christmas songs are abundant at the supermarket already. Last Christmas, I gave you my heart…

Finally… We reached John Labatt Centre!

but not before another photo!

This is the John Labatt Centre

We went to the box office to collect our tickets. (we bought our tickets online) and milled around for a while before entering the seating area

Reema, Busker (i don’t remember her real name) the Arts soph for 3South and Gabe.

posing with the big poster thing. I wanted a programme, but $15… I ended up buying a t-shirt instead. And those shoes I’m wearing, I bought them a few weeks ago at the mall. So pretty, and in my size! Actually, the whole store got shoes until size 11-12. best tau.. i bought for sister shoes too.

while waiting for the show to start. I love Ashley and Reema! (and Gabe, who was still talking to his friend at this point)

during intermission. We went to buy popcorn and beverages. And Gabe decided to steal my glasses.

end of the show! it was brilliant and magnificent and breath-taking and spectacular!! i was gasping at all the acrobats, and the clowns were funny and cute and adorable, especially the one with the orange pants who gave the singer a love letter. bez…

THANKS, YOU GUYS FOR TAKING TIME OUT TO WATCH ALEGRIA WITH ME JUST BECAUSE I WANTED A CANADIAN EXPERIENCE. And Gabe is pretty awesome for agreeing to go out with 3 girls when you could’ve spent the night eating ice cream.

and thanks to the man who kindly took this photograph even though it’s a ridiculous photo to take. (:

back to the humdrum of schoolwork now!

So I’ve been pretty terrible about posting to my blog. I think I can blame that on a few thin

So I’ve been pretty terrible about posting to my blog. I think I can blame that on a few things. I have definitely been busier with Scott gone, but part of it also I think I can blame on Facebook. I tend to post my pictures or videos or short status updates on what is going on and then I don’t feel the urgency to get things posted here, which I really should do. Because as hard as it has been to make this into an album, it will be much harder to try and make an album from my Facebook page and posts! One exciting piece of news is that I have been able to adjust my work schedule to have more days off in a row, which I think will really help me have more time for other things, so hopefully this blog will be one of them.

I tried out a feature on my blog I’ve never used before, the password-protected post. I posted a cherished recipe from my dear sister Heather for her famous chocolate chip cookies. She wasn’t excited about sending this special recipe out into the big wide world of Google searchers and such, but she is willing to let me share it with my family and friends. The password for that post is my first and last name, no space, lower case. Yep, this recipe really is that amazing so guard it with care! (The link is HERE.)

So for the few of my readers that are not on Facebook with me and for that hypothetical future album of mine, here is what I’ve been up to for the last month or so. (And for the rest of you, go make some cookies!)

Nov 11, 2009

Just thinking about my amazing husband. As much as I miss him and wish he were here, I really am proud of his patriotism and desire to serve our country. I also appreciate how hard he always works to take care of our family. The first picture is from 1995, when he was graduating from basic training in San Antonio, Texas…. Kind of a funny picture overall, but he sure looks handsome! The second picture is from September on the day he left for his current deployment. He has almost reached the halfway point.

Nov 10, 2009

My little Joshy is such a smarty pants. I told him to put the whole cube of butter in a recipe and he said, “The whole cube? You mean the whole rectangular prism?”

Cleaned out under Noah’s queen size bed. Insane! Sammy called the space behind Noah’s bed the “book drop off center.” Apparently when Noah finishes looking at a book he deposits it behind the headboard. One of the last things we pulled out was my missing keys with a mail key. Yay! No more going to the post office for mail! We rediscovered a lot of toys that he’s excited about playing with today.

Nov 8, 2009

I’m looking forward to starting a new work schedule this week with my medical transcription. I’ll be extra busy Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday but then have Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday with no work at all. I think this is really going to help bring some more sanity into my life. Well, at least for 4/7 of the week!

Nov 7, 2009

The fall sports season is officially over now for all the kids. It’s been busy, but I think it’s been good for us to be busy and out and about and of course good exercise for the kids.

This is the weather Sammy played soccer in for about 20-25 minutes today. I guess they REALLY wanted to play since it was the last game of the season. Insane!! He was soaked to the skin and shivering all the way home. After a warm bath he’s feeling better though. (I stayed in the car. I’m not crazy!)

done<ins style='text-decoration:none;'>

Nov 6, 2009

Watch out, kitchen, here I come! I’m going to crank the ipod and stick to it until it sparkles. (If I write it here I’m more accountable, right?)

Okay, so I didn’t get it to the level of sparkly perfection I envisioned, but I did make a significant impact and at one point (for about 2 minutes) all the dishes were caught up. Too many interruptions (oh the life of a mom!). I did stop to get the lawn mowed and edged, wanted to make sure I got that in before all the rain I see in the forecast. I also got my garlic planted for next year. I grew garlic for the first time last year and it turned out so great! I also helped Josh make dinner and I got some laundry done, so all in all a very successful day! I need more days like this one.

Nov 4, 2009

I’m excited to be breaking out of the house tonight and going with Sue to see Lisa Hannigan in concert, one of my favorite singers! She’s opening for David Gray, who I don’t really know but will hopefully like. It’s a rare treat for me to do something like this. Should be fun!!

Oct 31, 2009

Today needs to be all about playing catch up on all the things I’m behind on: work, dishes, and laundry to top the list. Throw in the kids soccer and football games and, oh yeah, Halloween. I need a maid, chauffeur, personal assistant, etc. But what I’m really dreaming of is a massage!

Woo hoo! Sammy got his first goal ever in soccer today! He also had the assist for the winning goal. Wish I’d gotten some video to show Daddy. Exciting day!

I stumbled across this picture today. This was during the last time Scott was deployed back in 2003. I remember that morning. We drove to Grandma and Grandpa D’s house so Grandpa could give us a ride to the airport to fly to see the Missouri cousins for a visit. Grandpa thought the boys looked so cute he had to take a picture before we left. They were awfully cute, but definitely a handful!

Oct 29, 2009

This is kind of yucky but pretty funny too. Noah is a little feverish (again!) so maybe Tony is trying to cool him down.

Sammy had a headache yesterday, but today convinced me he was fine and felt good. After choosing to go to bed at 7:30, though, and falling asleep right away I’m wondering if he’s our next victim of the flu, which will make all of us! That kid normally has to be dragged to bed and takes forever to fall asleep! I guess there are some advantages to sick kids.

Oct 21, 2009

I’m dealing with a sick little Noah again with a fever, just a little bit of coughing, and super sleepy. He keeps getting sick for a day, then better for a few days, then sick again, then better. I know lots of my Facebook friends have been dealing with illness. Anyone else getting this on again off again thing?

Oct 20, 2009

I’m getting ready to take the kiddos to the zoo. I wanted to go somewhere I could enjoy lots of fall leaves at their peak and they wanted to do something fun. Strangely they don’t think looking at trees is fun. Glad the weather is so gorgeous today!

Oops, guess I should have checked the schedule first! For some reason the zoo closed at 4. I would have figured they’d at least be open until sunset. Oh well. We had a great time in Washington Park walking some trails and playing on the awesome playground. It was beautiful and the kids had fun so it all worked out!

Oct 17, 2009

I’m making some banana bread. Noah was licking the spoon and said, “I’m good at tasting!” I’m glad we have a talented taster in the house!

My three older kids keep procrastinating bedtime with “One sec! Just a sec!” I can’t count the number of times as a mother I have almost blurted out, “No more secs!” Somehow I always manage to catch myself on that one though.

Oct 14, 2009

Gabe takes the PSAT today and has a cross country meet. I asked him if he had eaten breakfast and he said “I had three bowls of cereal and some leftover chicken and pasta.” Wow, yeah, I guess he’s covered!

Oct 13, 2009

One of those all too rare days where there is almost nothing I have to do. So even though there are tons of things I could or should do, it’s always hard to know what to do and I end up kind of wasting away the day. I need to come up with a plan so that doesn’t happen!

Oct 11, 2009

Today is Sammy’s birthday. Ten years of Sammy has been 10 years of laughter, fun, surprises, sweetness, enthusiasm, love, curiosity, and a fair share of drama, starting with his quick and dramatic entrance into the world 13 minutes after arriving at the hospital. I sure love that kid and can’t imagine our family without him!

Grandpa D came for a great visit this weekend. Hopefully we didn’t run him too ragged with our crazy schedule. He watched soccer, a cross country meet, football, and then we took a quick jaunt to the coast. And that was just Saturday! Sunday we had church, where he was able to ordain Josh as a deacon, and then… we celebrated Sammy’s birthday. Mike and Emily joined us. I didn’t take many pictures. Grandpa will have to send me his and then I can add more. We’re so happy he could come!

Oct 9, 2009

Noah just told me “I need it to be dark.” I was confused and said, “You need it to be dark? Why? Do you want to go to bed?” And he said “No, I need it to be dark so Grandpa can come.” Such a cutie. We’re all looking forward to our visit from Grandpa D!

Oct 7, 2009

Okay, so I didn’t put this on Facebook, but I’ll throw it in here. My sweet mom and a rewards card from my credit card helped me get in some professional cleaners before Grandpa came. Here’s my shiny kitchen!

Oct 6, 2009

Dog at the groomer, kids at preschool, elementary school, middle school, and high school. I’m actually all alone with no other beings I’m responsible for! Time to kick it into high gear and get ready for the carpet cleaner to come. Looking forward to clean carpets! Happy day!

So that pretty much catches up with some of the goings on around here. Getting sick along with everyone else in the house was a definite low point, but for the most part we’ve been managing pretty well while Daddy is gone. We definitely look forward to his return in a couple of months though! Things just aren’t the same without him around!

Two nights ago we babysat two girls, 3 years old and 18 months. Our own children were in their own homes and abode so putting them in bed was as routine as possible. Not so for our guests. It was time to put the 18 month old in her pack and play. I found the greatest teddy bear we had, gathered the softest blanky I could find and sang the greatest Jesus song I knew. With my fingers crossed and my hopes high I laid the baby girl down and anxiously waited to see how “at home” she would feel in this temporary dwelling place. Her eyes frantically paced the room, her bottom lip began to curl, she rose up faster than bread coming out of a toaster and began to scream with the utmost fear in her being. With her arms stretched out and her eyes perfectly fixed on mine she screamed for someone to rescue her from this dreaded pit of a pack and play.

I saw so much of myself in that little girl in that moment. Instantly I thought about seasons of my life where we battled uncertainty, lack of clarity, financial questions, miscarriage, sickness, relationship struggles, tragedy…all emotions and experiences rooted in fear and desperation for some type of intervention to happen. I not only see it in myself but rather in the people with whom I am in conversation with every day. Churches are afraid of the economy, organizations are afraid of even more budget cuts, non-profits are afraid that people won’t give, mortgage companies are afraid that home owners won’t pay, businesses are afraid that others won’t partner, families are afraid their current scenario won’t make it, leaders are afraid people won’t sign up, politicians are afraid that the community won’t vote, companies are afraid that employees might leave…there is fear on every corner in these days.

And yet when I looked into this scared girls eyes, she began to scream something I’ll never forget, “Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!” I am not her daddy but yet for that moment I was the only hope she had. And being a father myself, the very nature of fatherhood rose up inside of me. I was consumed with the desire for her to know that I was near. I urgently wanted her to know that as long as I was in the room she was ok. When I heard her scream for daddy I moved towards her as fast as I could to hold her, to breathe courage into her and more than anything to love her through her moment of fear. Our Abba invites His people to the same today. I’m convinced of it. I’m convinced the enemy wins when God’s people are consumed with fear. I’m convinced that while we sometimes feel lonely that God’s promise today is that we are never alone. I’m convinced that if Abba’s people will cry out “Daddy!” that in an instant they know the intimacy of the arms that hold them.

What are you afraid of? What name are you crying?

Sunday I got up and walked to the gym near the winery. While I was post showering, Gabe called and we decided to meet up for the incredible sunny fall weathered afternoon. I was a little nervous to see him because…well…you know.

It was seriously a brilliant afternoon. We walked and talked all along the East River. Philisophical, Religious, Family, Where I Am Going…we covered it all lightly and I called him my Constant (in LOST’s honor) to his face. I really wonder where we will go. Possibilities are either endless or short lived. Or maybe both?

Then I walked tipsily (we drank Octoberfest Beer on Avenue A) across the Williamsburg Bridge to meet amber to see her French friend sing in Spike Hill. I told Mum on the phone about my lovely afternoon and that if things were different I’d marry him. She told me that people don’t wait around. Wait…what? Was that an irk?

Turns out Amber’s friend was Marcel who friended me on facebook. And whose poster was at Banjo Jims. What a small funny world. Despite the language barrier I was in love with his set. He has the most beautiful, rich voice. Then Amber, Derek, Marcel, Ava, Nina, and their Mom had a quick bubble tea (#2) experience down the block. Then I raced home to do nothing alone.

What a great story! It is not often that I get excited about a business book, in fact I can not thi

What a great story! It is not often that I get excited about a business book, in fact I can not think of another occasion that it has happened. Most business books can be dry and boring, The Go-Giver is nothing like that.

The authors Bob Burg and John David Mann have take a whole different approach to getting their message across, no dry boring list of 20 neat things to do with your Rolodex. The Go-Giver is written in the style of a novel, the novel consists essentially of a number of parables and how the main character Joe implements these ideas.

Joe is a ‘go getter’, but, as the authors explain, Joe is hardworking and conscientious, but spends more time ‘going’ than ‘getting’. He is coming up on the third quarter of not making his sales quota, and is becoming more and more desperate to find those elusive clients that can change his fortunes. In frustration he turns to a senior but ignored figure in his department and asks for some advice. Gus suggests that Joe attend an upcoming talk by a speaker known as ‘The Chairman’, alas Joe needs answers now, not next month, and asks Gus for ‘The Chairmans’ telephone number.

The die is cast. And the story unfolds.

I won’t share Joe’s story with you, I will share my own instead. Although I have just finished reading Go-Giver for a third time now (and have had the ability to build a relationship with Bob Burg), by a huge amount of improbability the ideas that Bob Burg and John David Mann are suggesting, pretty much mirror my own story.

About 18 months ago I decided that I had had enough ‘fun’ in corporate America and working in the healthcare industry, after 4 plus years I was burned out. Burned out from catching a plane week after week to build someone else’s empire. I wanted to create something i could be passionate about. Of course no one wants to look at a new business or think about investing in others so I decided lets work on things that i have experience on such as cost savings and cost reduction and blend that together with my real estate investing background and be able to serve more businesses and corporations than i did before. My solution was to ‘give greater value’, I started by giving free advice, consultations and workshops for free! Free is always a great price!

Guess what? It wasn’t long before I started to speak and educate for money. The authorsof the Go Giver are right, become a giver, if you give great value the rewards will come. And love what you do, the more you love it, the better it gets.

Networking? What a boring and overused word, but when approached the right way it can lead to great things. By being a giver good things happen, by being a giver I have talked with famous authors, publishers, world class musicians, and famous actors and athletes. My network is amazing and growing! As Bob and John explain, ‘everyone in your network is a walking talking ambassador for you’.

Help your friends, and your competitors. That might sound less than sensible, but in fact it makes perfect sense. If you can not help someone, tell them who can, even if it is a competitor. You will be amazed what good things happen as a result.

I won’t share the rest of the authors ideas, but I will say this, they all make perfect sense, and even if you are not trying to become a captain of industry, there is something that can help you in your business or personal life.

I have given up my day job and I thank God for putting this book into my life in realization of all the people you can help change not only their aptitudes but their attitudes as well.

Read Go-Giver, I know that you will learn something. I wish I had read it years ago.

You can get your own copy from our resource center, http://maximpactsolutions.com/resources.asp, and even if you are not looking to change your luck in the business world, you might learn something that will help you in your personal world.

For those reasons and for the Five Laws of Stratospheric Success, I will always be a walking Personal Walking Ambassador for The Go Giver. Check out my full video review here:

Gabe walked into the kitchen with a stern look on his face, not flinching one bit while he stared right at me. I could tell I did something wrong—”Did I get his name wrong?”

I stared sternly at Jeremy. After I got over the initial shock and regret that I didn’t duck for cover, I laughed with everybody else. J. Rood was cracking up the whole time, and I think even Gabe smirked. Jeremy was trying to teach us physics—if you apply equal pressure to the surface of an egg, it won’t break. It was also a lesson in humility and mercy.
