The "Governor Pyncheon" The Chapter House of Seven Gables is very important to make the text as a whole. Hawthorne devotes almost the entire chapter to the apartment at the funeral of Judge Pyncheon. The narrator takes the idea that the judge is dead. Continuation of the judge wondered why it was so quiet prod. Why not get up? Why could not he turn his arm over his watch and watch to see how much time had passed.

The player was already under theImpression that the judge was dead as well, because it is important to understand why the topics Hawthorne the reader a very strange way. This chapter is out of place and it is quite clear that this spectral sequence has been deliberately added by Hawthorne, to highlight some of its key points and themes. With the addition of this horrible scene, Hawthorne is at risk eloquent realism throughout the novel.

Chapter ghost "Pyncheon Governor" does not fit the style and languagethe rest of the novel. This means for the reader, such as highlighting or bold text is that there is a great value to those words. In this case, Hawthorne is used to phase out the richness of the language of some important details to the reader. Hawthorne has this terrible chapter for two reasons: the depth of hatred felt towards Judge Pyncheon view, but also reveals the extent of his ambition. The details can not be taken directly to the plot, but the amount of informationforms of perception really given reader Pyncheon judges. Schadenfreude seems that the body of the narrator, but the gruesome details of how many people were in danger, authorities revealed Pyncheon Judge. The attack on Judge Pyncheon irony is hard to read without cringing inward. Hawthorne uses this scene erie ghost with the theme that most everyone on their achievements in some way just before it was rejected and reduce solidify.

I grew up working in a family business. My first timesheet is framed in my trunk, from 1989. I believe I made somewhere around eleven dollars on that paycheque. I was five.

My siblings and I worked in the greenhouses together all year round. We were paid well for kids but none of us ever quite got over the injustice of having to work every Saturday while our friends watched cartoons. We got up and started work at 7:30, had a coffee break at 10, lunch at noon, another coffee break at 3 and we quit at 4:30. We listened to the Top 40 on the radio – first with Casey Kasem, then with Rick Dees, then with Casey Kasem again. This was before Ryan Seacrest. By the end of the day we knew all the words to every song and in what order they would appear. Sometimes we would put on tapes of Honeymoon Suite, a Canadian band that featured our Uncle Dave as the drummer. We all still know the words to every Honeymoon Suite song. Later when it was just my brother and me at home there was a lot of Tupac and Warren G. At one time I knew the song Regulators off by heart. Pretty bad-ass image eh? Little white girl covered in potting soil, wearing her sister’s old jeans, singing about how ‘Nate Dogg and Warren G had to regulate’.

What we learned during these days in the greenhouse and on the farm together was that the four of us together were a unit. We learned how to work together to make a painful job go by. And we sometimes even had fun doing it. Swinging from the greenhouse cross-bars; using the hanging basket inserts as Frisbees; sliding through the snow on soil bales; riding on the green metal wagons that were pulled behind the garden tractor.

This weekend, the Sibs came down to help build the house. They arrived mid-afternoon Friday and set right to work and by dinner time there were a bunch of new walls up on the main floor. My eldest sister made us salmon and asparagus on the barbeque, we had a bonfire and we all camped out. Saturday morning there was coffee and everyone went back to work. By two o’clock we had most of the walls on the main floor up and we were starting all of the interior structural walls. We left a few of the trickier walls on the downstairs – the ones with gables – for Tyler and I to figure out on our own.

At the end of the weekend, we had a ceiling over the family room and one wall on the second story. They’re all coming back at Thanksgiving so Tyler and I are in a mad dash for the next two weeks to get some more walls up so that we can be finishing the second story and starting on the roof when they all come back.

Someone commented at some point that the Green Sibs still knew how to work together really well. My brother replied “Yeah, but this time we get to drink beer while we’re working.”

CORAL GABLES (CBSMiami.com) – On the streets of Coral Gables you’ll find sparkling fountains,

CORAL GABLES (CBSMiami.com) – On the streets of Coral Gables you’ll find sparkling fountains, lush landscaping, and fancy boutiques; but if you look closely, you’ll also see something else on walls, doors, and even parking meters: graffiti.

“We noticed that it was on our front door and on the wall next to us, and it was actually really obscene,” recalled Green Gables Cafe owner, Christina Alfonso.

Alfonso told CBS4’s Natalia Zea, she was horrified, “How awful! How many hours has it been there? How many people have seen that? We immediately ran over and washed it off.”

[worldnow id=6004393 width=385 height=288 type=video]

In Coral Gables, if business and homeowners don’t clean up graffiti within 72 hours they are given fines of $100 a day.

“It hurts us, I don’t know who they’re angry at, but we didn’t do anything,” Alfonso said of the graffiti “artists.”

But now, Coral Gables Police have a new weapon against the defacing doodling. Using more than $7,000 of a federal grant, the Department bought a mobile graffiti camera. It can be moved to anywhere in the City.

“We can attend to other situations in the city, and deploy our manpower in other situations and have the camera act as an additional officer,” Coral Gables police officer Kelly Denham said.

When a vandal enters the area where he or she is not supposed to be, the motion sensor goes off and the camera takes their picture, which can be used as evidence. The camera is also a deterrent; warning potential troublemakers that their images have been captured.

“They know they’re not supposed to be there, they’ve been given the warning and they vacate the area immediately,” said Denham.

Alfonso believes the camera will prevent her business from being defiled again.

“It’s nice to know someone out there is watching, not just us,” Alfonso said.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office and the city of North Lauderdale also have similar cameras in place.

The Queen Anne style came over to the United States and began getting popular around 1880, not

The Queen Anne style came over to the United States and began getting popular around 1880, not long after its popularity was booming in England. Just like with some other things, the term Queen Anne style is loosely used. Many of the same architectural elements seen in England are not the same seen here in the United States.

In fact, the US version of the Queen Anne style is much more similar to the Craftsman style than its British counterpart. While some of the features of these two design styles are similar, there are more differences. The biggest similarities are the asymmetrical facades paired with overhanging eves, towers, and Dutch Gables. Large wraparound porches often accentuate all of the above in classic Queen Anne Style.

Some of the most decorative elements that are significant in this architectural style are not found on the outside of the home, but rather in the decorations and hardware that adorn the interior. Door hinges, door knobs, cabinet hardware and much more are pieces that characterize the Queen Anne style perfectly, and may be similar or even identical to pieces found over in Great Britain.

The Craftsman/Queen Anne style can be found throughout the country, but perhaps the most famous example of this are the painted houses that line the streets of San Francisco. They are the epitome of this style.

If you want your home to portray the Queen Anne or Craftsman Victorian architectural styles, the best way to achieve this is from the inside out. If your home already has some of the exterior elements, that is an added bonus. Adding little touches throughout the interior are a great and affordable way to change the style of your home.

When picturing a Queen Anne house, what most often comes to mind are “gingerbread” houses. These houses have lacy, delicate features like turned porch posts and ornamental spindles. Some interior uses of this style are demonstrated above. This design is often called Eastlake, because it shares characteristics of the work by Charles Eastlake.

Another stop I made while spending the day in Salem was The House of the Seven Gables.

Some of you may recognize this name. In 1851 Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote and published a novel with the same title. The house was built by John Turner, a Salem sea captain, in 1668. Three generations of the Turner’s lived in the home. In 1782, Captain Samuel Ingersoll purchased the home when John Turner III lost the family fortune. He made renovations to the home that included removing some of the gables. When he died, the house transferred to his daughter Susanna. She was cousin to Nathaniel Hawthorne. Actually, Hawthorne never lived in the house. However, he visited Susanna and listened to her stories about the house and that inspired him to use the home as a setting for his novel. Also, the house he visited only had three gables. However, Susanna told Hawthorne about the seven gables and related the house’s history.

Caroline Emmerton bought the home in 1908. Emmerton came from a wealthy family and she inherited a large sum from John Bertram, her grandfather. She set out to continue the family tradition of supporting charities. Some of these included the Salem Public Library, the Salem Fraternity Boys Club, the Seaman’s Widow and Orphan Society, the Family Service Association, and the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities. During the years 1908-1910 she restored the home with the intention of opening it up as a museum and to help preserve the home for future generations. Another purpose was to charge a fee to tour the home to support the House of Seven Gables Settlement Association. She worked with Joseph Everett Chandler, a Boston architect, to restore the home. During the restoration process, more attention was placed on attracting visitors than on historical accuracy. In their defense though, this was a common approach in the early twentieth century. The gables were rebuilt. A “cent-shop” was added to the home as well. This was never a part of the Turner-Ingersoll home, however in Hawthorne’s novel, Hepzibah Pyncheon operates one out of the home. Emmerton also added a secret staircase to the attic. Our tour guide said this was inspired by Clifford Pyncheon, one of the characters in the novel who skulks around the home. However, several features of the home are in their original form, such as beams, rafters, and the Georgian paneling.

The house is quite lovely and has great views.

But I find it humorous that the reason this home was saved was because Hawthorne was inspired to write his novel and use this home for the setting. When I stood on the grounds though, I was grateful. And it is inspiring to know that novels can have such a power.

Also on the grounds is the Nathaniel Hawthorne Birthplace.

The house was not always right next door. It is the actual home of the author, but it was moved to this spot. Originally it was on Union Street, which is a few blocks away. This part of the tour was self-guided. Previously I had visited these homes during the off season (either October or November) and our guide actually took us through his birth home and gave us insight into his life. I’m not sure if this has changed permanently or due to large tour groups (ours was very large and cumbersome) and the steady flow of tours during the busy season they have determined that they don’t have the ability to guide you through the birthplace. Both of us were disappointed by this, especially since another group finished right after us and we didn’t get much time in his home. There were ladies present to answer questions, but it was so crowded and hot and we had been there before we went on our way. If you do plan on visiting the home I wouldn’t suggest going on a holiday weekend.

I started following the basic directions, which began with tracing out the walls of the house. First

I started following the basic directions, which began with tracing out the walls of the house. First, I laid the middle floor on top of the base, traced the walls, and the stair hole.

The next step was to put the front clapboard, and left gable board together, as you can see from the photos.

One of the key directions says to paint the boards prior to gluing them to the house, but in order to paint the house, I want to see it what it looks like put together, so I am just taping all of the pieces together instead of gluing them. Once I have the entire house together, I am going to delve into the task of finding the right colors.

And, remember that pesky chimney? it is still not together!

SHELTER ISLAND IS AN IDYLLIC PLACE, tucked between the North and South Forks of Long Island and accessible only by ferry. In its northwest corner is an almost perfectly preserved community of 1870s cottages with steeply pitched roofs and distinctive wood trim, along with more elaborate houses of the 1880s.

That corner of the island is Shelter Island Heights, with a total of 141 vintage houses on roughly 300 acres. About 100 of them were built by the Methodist Episcopal Church which, for eight short years in the 1870s, used the area for religious camp meetings. Frederick Law Olmstead had a hand in laying out the park-like open spaces, curving roads, and groves of trees.

The first wave of construction consisted of about 70 cottages with steeply pitched gable roofs and elaborate wood trim, similar to those found at camp meeting sites like Oak Bluffs in Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., and Ocean Grove, N.J.,

Two such houses, top, in Shelter Island Heights — next door neighbors, in fact — are now on the market. Both are circa 1879, with water views, as well as occasional views of cars lined up to board the North Ferry for Greenport.

5 Clinton Avenue, for 495K, above, is an unheated 4BR, 1.5 bath cottage with a wraparound front porch and open second floor balcony. Go here for more info and pics.

2 Waverly Place, asking 595K, below, is similar, but with 3 BR, electric heat, and a large side yard. There more info here.

Both are convenient to charming and low-key shops and restaurants, as well as tennis, beach, ferry, and marina.

Please note: I am not a real estate broker, nor do I have any financial interest in the sale of any property mentioned on this blog. I just like spreading the word about unique, historic properties and what I believe are solid investment opportunities.

the listing states that this house is not yet completed. please mr. builder, think twice before building this house. Just look at how ridiculously busy the facade(s) are. why do we need all those gables? it seems that all designers around town do is draw a plan and not even think about the outside of the house. oh, and putting gables and box windows everywhere does not make the building look more attractive. now for the buyer who is going to buy this house, let’s do the math: listing price $ 3.9 million! i just fell off my chair.

property value is $ 1,311,000 (from vanmap) – $ 3,985,000 listing price = $2,674,000

do you really think the builder is going to spend anywhere near even $2,000,000 on building this thing?

the listing states that the house will be 4475 sq.ft., so even generously at $250 per square foot construction cost comes out to only $1,118,750.

that means someone is still pocketing about $1.5 million. i should be a builder / developer!

What an odd book. What is going on here?

The House of Seven Gables in Salem

I should say, to begin with, that I had a history with this book before reading it. When I first moved to the Boston area years ago, well before I began grad school, I visited the “real” House of Seven Gables in Salem. I loved the house tour and, after visiting some other former haunts of Hawthorne’s in Concord and teaching some Hawthorne stories in an Intro to Lit class, became interested in visiting it again. However, I was determined not to re-visit until I had read the novel, though it took a while for the novel to get to the top of my reading list.

Then, this summer, I came across an amazingly over-the-top pulpy vintage copy. Above the title on the cover, a line reads, “What secret joys and dread shadows haunt… THE HOUSE OF SEVEN GABLES.” There is a rat and what looks like a stone gate adorned with a dragon-gargoyle in the foreground of the cover illustration.

What is it about this illustration that reminds me of my D&D-playing high school boyfriend?

The first line of the back matter reads: “Built on land taken from a dead wizard, the Pyncheons’ seven-gabled mansion was the focus for two centuries’ secrets and legends” legends of hauntings and dying curses, secrets of madness and missing fortunes.”

How could I possibly resist?

I suspected going in that the over-the-top presentation of the book would not be entirely reflected in its content; I didn’t expect a full-on gothic novel, but rather a realistic novel with some gothic elements. This does not exactly describe what I felt the novel to be, however; actually, I was surprised by how thoroughly domestic the novel was, at least in the beginning. The first chapter, which describes the house and the legend of how it was stolen from the accused “wizard” Matthew Maule got me excited for the rest of the novel. This, however, was followed by three chapters – THREE CHAPTERS – about one of the main characters, Hepzibah, being forced to open a cent shop. Now, look, I’ve read plenty of Victorian novels, so not only do I love to read about quotidian domesticity, but I’ve also certainly read my share of stories of genteel poverty and those who suffer from too great a disparity between their family reputation and the amount of cash they have on hand. But, wow, Hawthorne really knows how to draw that out for so long that I really couldn’t take it any more.

Speaking of which, anyone who has taught or even just loved nineteenth-century literature will know that one of the most annoying criticisms of said literature is that the language is “flowery.” For a typical undergrad, “flowery” is an insult roughly translated to mean, “the sentences are unnecessarily long and complicated, and I had to work too hard to understand them.” What usually gets called “flowery” is a style that I think is elegant and often witty, full of unusual syntax and beautiful rhythm. Usually I cringe at the word “flowery.” However, if an undergrad called this novel “flowery,” I would have to agree. I have never read such clunky, overwrought sentences—at least, not from a canonical author.

In fact, I was about halfway through the second chapter of the three about Hepzibah and the damned cent shop when I began to wonder if maybe the whole novel was a satire. Were the three chapters about the cent shop meant to be some kind of parody of the domestic novel? Or were they meant to be taken seriously, as pathos – as a poor mimicry of the kind of tragic domesticity you might read in Gaskell or Dickens? There are shades of both those writers in this novel, even as it never reached those heights – that is, again, unless this was meant as some kind of parody.

The question of comedy is intimately related to the “flowery” style. Since there are times when Hawthorne clearly does use a mock-heroic style, it’s hard to tell whether the whole novel is meant to be funny. Take this passage as an example:

“The girl ran into the house to get some crumbs of bread, cold potatoes, and other such scraps as were suitable to the accommodating appetite of fowls. […] The chicken, hereupon, though almost as venerable in appearance as its mother—possessing, indeed, the whole antiquity of its progenitors in miniature—mustered vivacity enough to flutter upward and alight on Phoebe’s shoulder” (89-90).

(Side note: is it weird that, when I began to read about the rooster Chanticleer and the other chickens, I immediately recognized a passage from the literature GRE? And, in fact, I’m fairly certain that it was given as an example of mock-epic or mock-heroic style.)

So in this sentence, clearly Hawthorne is using deliberately convoluted vocabulary to discuss something quotidian, to comic effect. He is (I think) making fun of the way the chickens seem to take themselves so seriously, and of Phoebe’s desire to make herself useful.

Yet what if we compare this to what I think is intended as a serious description of Phoebe’s positive influence on her cousin Clifford:

“But Phoebe afforded her poor patient with a supply of purer air. She impregnated it, too, not with a wild-flower scent – for wildness was no trait of hers—but with the perfume of garden roses, pinks, and other blossoms of much sweetness, which nature and man have consented together in making grow from summer to summer, and from century to century. Such a flower was Phoebe, in her relation with Clifford, and such the delight that he inhaled from her” (144-145).

(Gag! “The delight that he inhaled from her”—seriously, Nate? What is this, “Scent of a Woman”? And it goes on for pages like this. I have seen my share of vapidly sweet Victorian heroines, but seriously, I expected the chickens to start making her a dress to wear to the ball at any moment.)

flowery prose, flowery girls... and flowers

If the first passage is mock-heroic, what is the second? Is the whole novel written in mock-heroic style, or is there a distinction to be made? And if there’s a distinction, where is the line drawn? Obviously, I don’t think a serious novel must be void of humor, but if the humor lies specifically in the very use of style and language, what are we to make of what appears to be non-humorous passages written in what appears to me to be the same style?

And this is not even to mention all the weirdness and all-over-the-place-ness that generally pervades the novel. There’s an entire chapter in which the narrator implores a character we KNOW is dead (there is no question) to get up and take part in all the things on his calendar for that day. What IS GOING ON in that chapter? And then there’s the part that seriously is my favorite, just because it’s so wacky: when the “artist” character takes a chapter to tell Phoebe his version of an old family tale, using a style that is even more over the top than the rest of the novel.

All in all, I will say this: though I thought the novel was poorly written and very clunky, and arguably may not know what it was trying to be, every time I start to describe it to someone, I get so tickled with its craziness that I find some affection for it. And in this way, I think I will always have a confused fondness for… THE HOUSE OF SEVEN GABLES.
