Cheeky Girls … la … Inchisoare …

Gemenele Monica si Gabriela Irimia figureaza pe lista participantilor la controversatul show de televiziune “Escape From Takeaway Jail”, prezentat de celebrii Ant si Dec.

Producatorii emisiunii “Escape From Takeaway Jail” (“Scapa de la inchisoare”), difuzata de postul de televiziune ITV 1, mizeaza pe surorile Monica si Gabriela Irimia, componentele trupei Cheeky Girls, pentru a aduce in fiecare sambata cat mai multi britanici in fata televizoarelor. Se pare ca romancele sunt intens curtate de prezentatorii emisiunii, celebrii Ant si Dec, pentru a se alatura echipei de vedete care vor accepta sa stea la puscarie, de dragul audientei. Alaturi de cantaretul Chesney Hawkes, DJ-ul Richard Blackwood, rapperul Kenzie sau modelul Bianca Gascoigne, romancele, imbracate in zeghe, vor fi nevoite sa participe la probe care de care mai scarboase pentru a putea fi puse in libertate. Printre incercarile prin care vor trece gemenele Monica si Gabriela, in varsta de 26 de ani, se numara inducerea starii de voma sau o calatorie pe o bicicleta pentru copii printr-o balta de noroi.

Un duel pe cinste, nu-i asa? Cu precizarea ca nu e vorba de un duel al nurilor, asa cum probabil au gandit multi din cei pe care i-au atras numele din titlu, ci de, tineti-va bine, unul al mintilor! Organizat de, tineti-va si mai bine, Oxford Debate Society, pe care Harold Macmillan, fost Prim Ministru al Marii Britanii a numit-o ultimul bastion al libertatii de expresie din Occident. Tema dezbaterii, “Celebritatea implica responsabilitate”.

Gabriela Irimia, fosta logodnica a parlamentarului Lembit Opik, a subliniat faptul ca, in opinia ei si a surorii sale, vedetele au obligatia morala de a oferi exemple bune. Asta la o saptamana dupa ce Monica, cealalta Cheeky Girl a subliniat ca e lipsita de prejudecati, oferind exemple in acest sens tabloidelor britanice. La randul sau, Rebecca Loos, presupusa fosta amanta a lui Beckham, a tras un semnal de alarma asupra tendintei celebritatilor de a asocia statutul de vedeta cu comportamentul iresponsabil. Concluzia pare sa fi fost ca pozele explicite sunt ok din punct de vedere al responsabilitatii, atata vreme cat nu te imbeti prin pub-uri, ca Amy Winehouse.

PS Sper sa apreciati efortul destul de mare pe care l-am depus pentru a gasi poze in care participantele la dezbatere apar imbracate decent, asa cum sta bine unor posesoare de minti responsabile, care s-au duelat la Oxford. Sau nu apreciati?

The idea of having a Cheeky Girl at No.10 is pretty much unstoppable.

Unexpectedly, I have found myself at the Welsh Liberal Democrat Conference in Aberystwyth this weekend. I say unexpectedly, but it shouldn’t be as I offered to help with campaigns training at the conference some time ago. What is unexpected is instead being at the conference, but without any training to do. So instead I’ve ended up having a weekend away in Aberystwyth, but also being able to use the fact that the conference is in the town to catch up with old friends that I haven’t seen for ages.

I’ve wittered endlessly on this website about how much I love the town – as some people pointed out to me last night when they were surprised to see me here, but then not at all surprised when they found out why I was here – but it is great to be back. I haven’t been in Aber for about a year or more, and so being back this weekend has given me the opportunity to do the things that I’ve missed since I stopped living here.

I spent yesterday evening in the pub catching up with old friends and meeting some new people who weren’t around when I worked for the Welsh Liberal Democrats. The most bizarre experience though was when Lembit Opik arrived in The Academy pub with Gabriela Irimia. Suddenly they were both surrounded by students wanting to meet them both, taking photos of them with their phones and just being totally and utterly obsessed with them both. As a Liberal Democrat you just aren’t used to having an MP that is so popular and so much at the centre of attention from ordinary people, who presumably have little interest in party politics. It was a surreal experience.

It was always expected that the Welsh Liberal Democrat Conference in Aberystwyth would be about leadership. Most expected the discussion to be about Mike German’s leadership in the Welsh Assembly, but instead, Lembit Opik has today unexpectedly announced his own resignation as Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats.

His leader’s speech this afternoon was very personal and honest. He was open about his belief that the Liberal Democrats got it wrong in not going in to coalition with Labour in the Assembly, and was also very frank about his views on terrorism, drugs, negative campaigning and gave suggestions on where the party should go in the future. He also made a swipe at some of the media coverage of his relationship with Gabriela Irimia, which has clearly been very hurtful.

After six years as the Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader, he has decided to stand down to concentrate on his new role in the party’s Shadow Cabinet, because he wants to run for Party President and because he believes there should be one leader of the party who sits in the Welsh Assembly.

It wasn’t a brilliant speech in the classic Lembit Opik style, but instead was more of a frank and open dialogue with the Welsh party. In that sense, though it was very effective and will hopefully open a good and constructive discussion with the party about where it goes now. That is something that is desperately needed.

UPDATE: I had hoped I could be the first person to blog this news as I was there for his speech, but it looks as though James Graham got there first!
