Both slots were new releases at the 2009 Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas. In “American Idol,” slot players can trigger a bonus round that lets them become one of three judges — Simon Cowell, Kara DioGuardi or Randy Jackson — and then plays video clips of past contestants, good AND bad.

According to Sphere.com, Paula Abdul was the lone holdout participant even BEFORE she announced she was leaving the show. Innnteresting.

Meanwhile, the “Sex and the City” slot machines are subtitled “Change of a Dress.” Clever, no? They feature bonus rounds that include video clips of all four women plus Mr. Big.

International Game Technology spokeswoman Julie Brown told Sphere, “There’s shoes and purses and lots of bling and big bonuses and the music track, and it’s a very interactive game.”

“Have you ever played Roulette?”

My significant other posed this question to me not long ago. At the time I said yes, thinking of one drunken incident on New Year’s Eve long ago (we won’t discuss details). But it occurs to me now, that for years I have been playing Roulette with my finances. Sometimes it’s been a total gamble from month to month and/or week to week, as to how I would get by and which bills would get paid.

Playing the wheel of fate

I would realize that only so much money was available (let’s say $900 for the sake of argument) and there would be a stack of bills overdue (perhaps totaling $1300 just to give it a number). At this point I could randomly draw from the deck and let fate decide which creditors got the cash and which ones got the “check’s in the mail” bluff for another month. And I am ashamed to say that for awhile I did exactly that.

It all adds up, your not buying yourself time your digging the hole deeper

Of course the late fees ($30 here or $45 there) would add up on the unpaid bills. I don’t know why I was clueless to this at the time except that I was living in a constant state of denial. This continued until I had to apply for a loan just to finish covering my monthly living expenses. In hindsight I’m surprised it didn’t happen sooner but its amazing how talented you can get at juggling (even without clown training).

Trying to make it right

Then I realized that I had to stop letting my decisions ride on fate’s spin of the wheel. No more stabs in the dark and hope the bet would end up going my way. I had to sit down with all the bills, prioritize them, organize due dates, and make phone calls on the ones that couldn’t be paid in order to negotiate better terms, perhaps a deferment for the month, or whatever I could manage.

Getting there

It hasn’t always been successful and I still ended up falling into the payday loan trap for awhile. But there is no way to get out of the deep hole of debt unless you start paying your way out, one bill at a time.

Ricks’s #1 New York Times bestseller, transformed the political dialogue on the war in Iraq—The Gamble is the next news breaking installment

Thomas E. Ricks uses hundreds of hours of exclusive interviews with top officers in Iraq and extraordinary on-the-ground reportage to document the inside story of the Iraq War since late 2005 as only he can, examining the events that took place as the military was forced to reckon with itself, the surge was launched, and a very different war began.

Since early 2007 a new military order has directed American strategy. Some top U.S. officials now in Iraq actually opposed the 2003 invasion, and almost all are severely critical of how the war was fought from then through 2006. At the core of the story is General David Petraeus, a military intellectual who has gathered around him an unprecedented number of officers with both combat experience and Ph.D.s. Underscoring his new and unorthodox approach, three of his key advisers are quirky foreigners—an Australian infantryman-turned- anthropologist, an antimilitary British woman who is an expert in the Middle East, and a Mennonite-educated Palestinian pacifist.

The Gamble offers news breaking information, revealing behind-the-scenes disagreements between top commanders. We learn that almost every single officer in the chain of command fought the surge. Many of Petraeus’s closest advisers went to Iraq extremely pessimistic, doubting that the surge would have any effect, and his own boss was so skeptical that he dispatched an admiral to Baghdad in the summer of 2007 to come up with a strategy to replace Petraeus’s. That same boss later flew to Iraq to try to talk Petraeus out of his planned congressional testimony. The Gamble examines the congressional hearings through the eyes of Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker, and their views of the questions posed by the 2008 presidential candidates.

For Petraeus, prevailing in Iraq means extending the war. Thomas E. Ricks concludes that the war is likely to last another five to ten years—and that that outcome is a best case scenario. His stunning conclusion, stated in the last line of the book, is that “the events for which the Iraq war will be remembered by us and by the world have not yet happened.”…….
Readmore

“Seemed To Be In Hurry” 2009-10-25
By Patrick Lair (Missoula, MT United States)
I don’t want to take away from the impressive amount of work that had to have gone into this book, but reading The Gamble right on the heels of Fiasco, it kind of felt like the former was a hastily thrown together sequel.

First and foremost, the copy editing was terrible. There were typos galore. That aside, the second book didn’t appear to have the structure that the first one had. It read more like a series of addenda to the first. I also noticed lots of quotes, descriptions and phrasing that was cut and pasted right out of the first into the second.

This is all nitpicking on details. Overall, it got the job done and was a fascinating read. Mr. Ricks is obviously a first-class reporter. But while reading The Gamble, I couldn’t help thinking it must have been cranked out with less time for reflection.

“This book has information people should know” 2009-10-04
By Israel Drazin (Boca Raton, Florida)
Two-time Pulitzer Prize winning author Thomas Ricks subtitled this superb description of the recent problems of the Iraq War “General David Petraeus and the American Military Adventure in Iraq, 2006-2008.” Ricks had disclosed the earlier Iraq War troubles in his New York Times Bestseller Fiasco.

Ricks reveals how the United States fought against Iraqi insurgent forces with outdated counter-productive methods designed for large military engagements, such as World war II, resulting in thousands of American and many more Iraqi deaths, as well as an Iraqi civil war, until just a handful of active duty and retired generals were able to persuade President Bush and the military establishment to use instead counter-insurgency methods.

Everyone interested in knowing the inside information about what is only sketched out in newspapers and TV, who want to know what will happen in Iraq in the future, and when the United States can leave Iraq, must read this book.

The United States attacked Iraq in 2003 and President Bush announced that he had achieved a military victory within weeks after American forces began to fight. He, the Secretary of Defense, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and virtually the entire Pentagon establishment saw success continuing for the next three years despite several thousand American deaths, constant suicide bombings, deadly explosives left on roads, assassinations, and the apparent need for American soldiers to hide in fortified enclaves. Frustrated and confused American soldiers indiscriminately and brutally murdered twenty-four innocent Iraqis at Haditha in Iraq in 2005, including women and children and a wheelchair-bound old man, and this was not an isolated murder.

It was not until 2006 that President Bush was forced to admit that the actions of the past three years were a dismal fiasco.

Ricks interviewed hundreds of people and relates their assessments. One expressed the view of many: “The truth is that many commands in Iraq (before 2007) are no longer focused on winning and instead are focused on CYA” – that is, covering your ass. Another highlighted the problem: “Part of this loss of focus is lack of clear guidance on exactly what winning means and how to achieve it.”

Ricks shows that the answer for what to do in Iraq would come in large part from General David Petraeus. Petraeus changed the war from conventional fighting to counterinsurgency. He taught that rather than focusing on killing insurgents, the primary objective of the American forces should be the Iraqi people “figure out how to win them.” The military should concentrate on providing security and opportunity for every Iraqi. The troops needed to get out of their enclaves and move among the Iraqis, live among them, protect them, stay with them, separate them from the insurgents, give them a sense of security, and they will begin to talk with the Americans. This would also bring over many dissatisfied insurgents to the American side.

Petraeus insisted that he could only spread out his forces among the Iraqi people if he had an increase in forces. The American government and most of the general population were against an increase; they were tired in 2006 of seeing the increases in deaths, no reason for staying Iraq and no plan to end the war.

President Bush increased the number of forces in 2007. General Petraeus was given command in Iraq. He led his soldiers in a “surge” that cleaned out many areas and began to place forces among the population. The psychological impact of the surge was huge. As predicted, the number of insurgent attacks decreased and some local Iraqis and some tribal chiefs began to work with the American forces. But the underlying festering problem in Iraq was not solved.

In 2008, President Bush announced that the surge was “doing what it was designed to do,” but, he admitted, it had not done what he hoped it would do – it did not lead to political reconciliation among the Iraqi people, among the Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds. These people could not get along with one another and there was a simmering civil war boiling underneath the surface of Iraq. It was only the presence of American forces that held the civil war at bay.

The Iraqi government was and is unable and unwilling to solve this basic problem. The Iraqi Prime Minister “Maliki government is very dysfunctional, and unwilling to reach out to his enemies…. He has a conspiratorial mind-set, and is fearful of a coup.”

While many Americans and their representatives in Congress saw the reduction in deaths, they still have “a hard time seeing the big picture and what constitutes success.”

What is the current American goal in Iraq?

One observer described it as a very limited hope: “We have given up on having a shinning beacon of democracy in Iraq. We want a nation that is relatively stable, not a threat to its neighbors, and can protect its borders. We have also largely given up on sectarian reconciliation; we now simply hope for some type of sectarian accommodation that will reduce the likelihood of widespread conflict when we leave…. We’ve planted the seeds and will know the time to leave when the seed blooms. Unfortunately, we cannot tell the American people how long this particular flower takes to bloom” (emphasis added). In the mean time, America needs to spend time, money and lives to try to keep Iraq stable.

How long, realistically speaking, will Americans need to stay in Iraq? Ricks points out that history has shown that states as divided and weak as Iraq rarely become stable; and experts predict that even the current minimal American goals cannot be achieved for over a decade.

But why should America care? Leaving aside the humanitarian answer, that to leave now would result in chaos and the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives in civil war; there is an important American, indeed world interest. Ricks makes it clear that the internal civil war in Iraq will spill over the Middle East, involve countries such as Iran, which is viciously hostile to the US and US interests, and cause the US to become involved in a much greater war.

Danny Demoraes’ brother died of pneumonia, a complication of the H1N1 virus. Demorae, a senior at UCF, received his H1N1 vaccine last Thursday.

John Choi

A month after he watched his 27-year-old brother die of complications caused by the H1N1 virus, UCF senior Danny Demoraes entered the second-floor conference room at Health Services to receive the flu vaccine.

David Demoraes was two weeks away from becoming a firefighter in August when he began complaining of a cough, vomiting and body aches. By the end of the month he had been admitted to a hospital suffering from pneumonia, a complication of H1N1.

On Oct. 3, after a month-long battle, a blood clot blocked one of his arteries, causing his blood pressure to drop to zero, Demoraes said.

“I felt his heart take its last couple beats,” Demoraes said. “My brother and I used to do everything together. Now everything has changed.”

Danny Demoraes received his vaccine Thursday — one of the 1,500 doses available to students, faculty and staff delivered to UCF Health Services, 24,000 had been requested.

“It’s worth getting the vaccine because you just don’t know who it’s going to hospitalize…who it’s going to kill,” Demoraes said. “If the school is offering free vaccines why not prevent it beforehand?”

Chad Binette of UCF News & Information said that there have been 35 cases of H1N1 confirmed at UCF. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

in Atlanta, college-aged people are within a more at-risk category.

“For instance, between ages 5 and 24, the CDC estimates 2,196 cases per 100,000, but only 107 per 100,000 in the 65 and older age group,” Binette said. “UCF is one of the first Florida universities to receive vaccines and getting the vaccine is the best way to stay healthy and protect yourself from the H1N1 virus. The vaccine is safe and effective, and students can get it for free.”

Thomas Sutton, a UCF freshman micro & molecular biology major, agrees. Sutton said he gets his vaccine as a “force of habit” every year, but his grandmother nearly dying of the virus raised his awareness about H1N1.

Claudia Witcher, nursing director for UCF Health Services, began each session with a short presentation explaining to attendees the differences between the two vaccines. The shot is made of dead viral particles, whereas the attenuated nasal vaccine is a live virus that replicates only in the nostril, Witcher said.

“For homework, go out and tell your friends how easy it is, because we need all students to be immunized,” said Pharmacy Manager Sheryl Gamble.

Anne Schuchat, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, reported Friday that 129 children have died from H1N1.

According to the CDC, Novel influenza A, H1N1, is a new flu virus of swine origin that first caused illness in Mexico and the United States in March and April 2009. It was determined that the virus was spreading from person to person with the infection causing a wide range of flu-like symptoms, including fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. In addition, many people also have reported nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea. On June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization raised the worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 6 in response to H1N1.

As of Nov. 1, the WHO reported the pandemic has infected 199 countries and overseas territories and caused more than 6,000 deaths.

According to a health alert put out by the CDC on Nov. 6, most people who get H1N1 will have a mild illness and recover in fewer than two weeks. Others, however, are more likely to get flu complications that result in hospitalization and, occasionally, death. Complications can include pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infections and ear infections, or worsen chronic health problems such as asthma or congestive heart failure. The CDC urges clinicians to begin antiviral treatment of suspected persons based on direct observation as opposed to relying on rapid influenza tests or laboratory confirmation.

It takes about two weeks for the vaccine to become effective in the system, Witcher said.

She recommends maintaining good hand washing practices, not sharing food or drink with others and employing good coughing and sneezing etiquette in the interim.

“My brother was all about helping people,” Demoraes said. “If anything, he would be happy that at least this message can get out there and help other people. That’s what he would have wanted.”

Let's get this rolling and move on with a smile, today!

How to turn $1.00 into thousands the honest way
November 11, 2009 by cooa1 | Edit

MAKE $250,000 IN WEEKS – AS SEEN ON OPRAH & 20/20
**Proven by various, highly-respected U.S. TV and Radio programs as being
100% legal, feasible and true.**
**Oprah Winfrey and ABC’s investigation team 20/20 also prove it can be
done.***
For a simple investment of 15-30 minutes and just $6,
it is 100% worth it to
make thousands so quickly.

From PayPal:
“Dear Member, it has come to our attention that there is a paypal investing
opportunity floating around at the moment you may have heard or seen the $6
investment. You may have even taken part in it. Well we have been asked a
lot of questions about this investment the answer is yes it does work and
yes it is safe to use providing you follow the rules it is legal and has
made a big hit on the internet this year. If you would like to take part in
this scheme or would like a bit more information then please see the
attached file that was kindly donated to us. Thank you for using PayPal!”

Turn $6 into $15,000 in only 30 days…here’s how! – revealed to you in
step-by-step detail.

I found this on a bulletin board and decided to try it:
Make Money with your Paypal account as shown on Oprah!
“A little while back, I was browsing through news groups and came across an
article similar to this that said you could make thousands of dollars within
weeks with only an initial investment of $6.00!

So I thought, “Yeah right, this must be a scam”, but like most of us, I was
curious, so I kept reading. Anyway, it said that you send only $1.00 to each
of the 6 email addresses stated in this article.

You then place your name and address at the bottom of the list at the # 6th
position and email it to your friends as well as post this message (with
your email address in the list) to at least 200 newsgroups.

(There are thousands)

So after thinking it over, and talking to a few people first, I thought
about trying it. I figured “what have I got to lose except $6.00, right?”

So I invested the measly $6.00

Well GUESS WHAT!!

Within days, I started getting money coming into my Pay Pal account!

I was shocked!

I figured it would end soon, but the money just kept coming in.

In my first week, I made about $25.00, which means that 25 people joined the
group after they saw my posted messages.

By the end of the second week I had made a total of over $1000.00!

In the third week I had over $10,000.00 and it’s still growing.

This is now my fourth week and I have made a total of just over $42,000.00
and it’s still coming in rapidly.

It’s certainly worth $6.00, and the few minutes it took to join Paypal.

I have spent more than that on the lottery!

Let me tell you how this works and most importantly, why it works. Also,
make sure you print a copy of this article

NOW, so you can get the information off of it, as you need it.

I promise you that if you follow the directions EXACTLY, that you will start
making more money than you thought possible by doing something so easy!

SUGGESTION:
Read this entire message carefully!
Follow the simple directions and watch the money come in, it’s that easy!
It’s legal. And, your investment is only $6.00.

AGAIN, PLEASE NOTE:

Follow these directions EXACTLY, and $20,000 or more can be yours in 4 to 6
weeks.

This program remains successful because of the honesty and integrity of the
participants. Please continue its success by carefully adhering to the
instructions. In this business your product is not solid and tangible, it’s
a service. You are in the business of developing Mailing Lists. Many large
corporations are happy to pay big bucks for quality lists. However, the
money made from the mailing lists is secondary to the income, which is made
from people like you and me asking to be included in that list.

Here are the 3 easy steps to success:

REQUIREMENTS:
You must have a verified PayPal account. If you do not have an account,
take a few minutes to join Paypal FREE: www.paypal.com
Paypal is 100% secure and is used by millions of people worldwide.
The Internet’s most trusted Internet banking system for your future income.
When creating your Paypal account make sure you use the same Email address
as your user name in the list below so people can send money to your
account.

STEP 1
once you have a PayPal account running, use Paypal to pay $1 to EACH of the
6 Email Addresses below because you

pay people with an email address in Paypal.
FOLLOW THESE EASY STEPS:
1. Log in to PayPal. Go to SEND MONEY tab.
2. Type in
Recipients name: (Email address)
Subject:: “EMAIL LIST”
Category:”SERVICE”
Comments: “PLEASE ADD ME TO YOUR EMAIL LIST”.
3. Next screen: CHECK PAYMENT DETAIL – Select “NO SHIPPING ADDRESS REQUIRED”
4. Send Money.
THAT’S IT. YOU’RE DONE!!

What you are doing is creating a service.
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY LEGAL!
You are requesting a legitimate service and you are paying for it!

Send $1.00 to EACH of these Email addresses:
1) d.greenway@hotmail.com

2) kmcm49@epix.net

3) dancreedy5868@live.com

4) huministic@gmail.com

5) startechsolutions@yahoo.com

6) tom1tlr@yahoo.com

STEP 2
Now,… AFTER paying $1.00 to each of the email addresses above, take the #1
Email Address off the list, move the

other Email Addresses up (6 becomes 5, 5 becomes 4, etc.) and add Your Email
Address as number 6 on the list.

STEP 3
Keep this article as close to the original as possible.
Post this article to at least 200 newsgroups (there are thousands of
groups).
And email your message to as many people you can. Remember, the more you
post and email the more money you make!
—————————————————————————¬—

HOW TO POST TO NEWSGROUPS & MESSAGE BOARDS

Step #1)

You do not need to re-type this entire letter to do your own posting. Simply
put your CURSOR at the beginning of this letter and drag your CURSOR to the
bottom of this document, and select ‘copy’ from the edit menu. This will
copy the entire letter into your computer’s temporary memory.

Step #2)

Open a blank ‘Notepad’ file and place your cursor at the top of the blank
page. From the ‘Edit’ menu select ‘Paste’. This will paste a copy of the
letter into notepad so that you can add your email to the list.

Step #3)

Save your new Notepad file as a .txt file. If you want to do your postings
in different sittings, you’ll always have this file to go back to.

Step #4)

Use Netscape or Internet Explorer and try searching for various newsgroups,
on-line forums, message boards, bulletin boards, chat sites, discussions,
discussion groups, online communities, etc. EXAMPLE: go to any search engine
like yahoo.com, google.com, altavista.com, excite.com – then search with
subjects like millionaire message board? or money making message board? or
opportunity message board? or money making discussions? or business bulletin
board? or money making forum? etc. You will find thousands & thousands of
message boards. Click them one by one then you will find the option to post
a new message.

Step #5)

Visit these message boards and post this article as a new message by
highlighting the text of this letter and selecting ‘Paste’ from the ‘Edit’
menu. Fill in the Subject, this will be the header that everyone sees as
they scroll thru the list of postings in a particular group, click the post
message button. You’re done with your first one! Congratulations!

REMEMBER, THE MORE NEWSGROUPS YOU POST IN, THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL MAKE!!

BUT YOU HAVE TO POST A MINIMUM OF 200!

That is it!

PLEASE REMEMBER

This program remains successful because of the honesty and integrity of the
participants and by their carefully adhering to the directions.

You are simply paying into a money making chain of participants and if the
chain is broken you are screwing someone else out of their fair share.

So, as each person who joins the family and the directions are followed, six
members will be reimbursed for their participation as a List Developer with
one dollar each.

You then insert your Email Address into the list and it will move up
geometrically.

So that when your name reaches the #1 position you will have potentially
received thousands of dollars into your account!!!

JUST MAKE SURE ALL THE ADDRESSES ARE CORRECT.

Now the WHY part out of 200 postings:

Say I receive only 5 replies (a very low example). So then I made $5.00 with
my name at #6 on the letter. Each of the 5 persons who just sent me $1.00
make the MINIMUM 200 postings, each with my name at # 5 and only 5 persons
respond to each of the original 5, this is an additional $25.00 for me.
Now those 25 each make 200 minimum posts with my name at #4 and only 5
replies each. This brings in an additional $125.00. Those 125 persons turn
around and post the MINIMUM 200 with my name at #3 and receive 5 replies
each, I will make an additional $625.00. Oh, now here is the FUN part, each
of those 625 people post a MINIMUM of 200 letters with my name at #2 and
they receive 5 replies each. That just made me $3,125.00!!!

Those 3125 persons will all deliver this message to 200 newsgroups with my
name at #1 and if still 5 persons per 200 react, I will receive an
additional $15,625.00!!

With an investment of only $6.00

You may have heard of multiple intelligences. No, I’m not trying to tell you how smart I am. (

You may have heard of multiple intelligences. No, I’m not trying to tell you how smart I am. (Though I am smart. Just ask me.) What I mean is that when I become interested in a subject I thirst for knowledge on that subject. I want to know exactly what I don’t know. I fully exhaust it. Once that topic has run its course, I move on to the next and learn all I can about that subject. One of my first passions was horse racing.
When I was introduced to the world of Thoroughbred horse racing in 1987, I was hooked. I learned the different classes of races, how the purse money was divided, and how to manage a stable. Of course, I learned how to read a racing form and bet – when I was too young to do so legally! I studied blood lines. Then held jobs at Woodbine racetrack and Kinghaven’s breeding farm. I mucked my twentythousand stalls. For years I filled my brain with Thoroughbred facts. The owners, trainers, jockeys and “big” horses were celebrities to me.

I haven’t seen a live Thouroughbred horse race in years, but get me on the subject or invite me to a day at the races and I will become as absorbed as I ever was.

I also learned about Standardbred racing in detail. On November1st, 2009 I had the pleasure of joining an old friend from Alberta, a standardbred horse trainer, in the winner’s circle at Rideau Carleton raceway in Ottawa. The excitement, sights and scents brought me back and flooded my mind and heart with memories. The old passion rekindled!

This appreciation of this sport has given me great pleasure over the years and continues to do so. When friends learn of this part of my life, I am often asked to teach them how to bet and understand the myriad information a racing program can provide. My pleasure. I’ll do it for you too. Look for the information on www.Chuckittv.com.

By Michael MacLeod

A MAN who made up an entire family and claimed to be fighting for custody of his kids to con a workmate out of £30,000 has been jailed for 15 months.

Former Scottish Water employee Alexander Shields looked for pity from his “naïve” workmate Lynn McFarlane by pretending he was embroiled in a custody battle and asked her for cash.

She fell for his elaborate domestic nightmare – before it was revealed he had made up having a wife and kids simply to dupe her.

The 26 year-old Bathgate man then recklessly gambled the lot without making a penny back.

Today (Thurs) at Edinburgh Sheriff Court he blamed a gambling addiction and said he “always intended to give the money back.”

But Sheriff Neil MacKinnon branded him “dishonest, calculated and callous.”

The office temps met while working at Scottish Water’s Buckstone Terrace building in Edinburgh in January last year.

Desperate for cash, Shields targeted Miss McFarlane over three months, feeding her lies to get the money he craved.

He told Miss McFarlane he wanted to leave his wife to be with her, but needed money to pay for lawyers and to pay back loan sharks he claimed were threatening him.

Living a lie

Duped into thinking Shields was in trouble, Miss McFarlane forked out all of her money for him, took out loans and even plunged £6,000 into the red.

It was only after three months that Miss McFarlane realised Shields was living a lie, as his made-up family madness went beyond belief.

She reported him to police, and in court Shields admitted using a fraudulent scheme to get money between January 15 and March 31, in 2008.

His defence agent Peter O’Neill said: “As the friendship grew he felt comfortable enough to ask her for money.

“He didn’t always expect to get it, but as an addict does, he kept on going back to the source of money.

“He says he always intended to give it back but was constantly chasing his losses.

“He thought that if he got another £500 everything would be forgotten about, but that never happened.”

“None of this was true”

His imaginary second-life got so out of control that Shields had no idea how much money he owed his gullible colleague.

Fiscal depute Ruth Ross-Davie said previously: “He told her he had separated from his wife and that she was threatening to divorce him and remove his daughter from the UK and that he required lawyer’s fees.

“Then he told her he owed money to so-called loan sharks who were threatening him and sending text messages threatening her.

“None of this was true, as he well knew.

“Whenever she expressed any doubt he would reassure her that he wasn’t lying and that he wanted to be with her as soon as the matrimonial problems were resolved.

“It seems Miss McFarlane was rather naive and inexperienced with relationships and this made her a target for his scheme.”

And court heard yesterday that he went into depression and continued gambling to “cheer himself up.”

Mr O’Neill added: “Of course £30,000 is a huge amount of money and gambling is his one and only vice.

“He didn’t face up to the problem and thought it was nearly half the amount he owed.

“He could not believe he let it get to this stage. His depression has never been properly diagnosed and big wins can cheer someone up.

“His family are supportive but deeply ashamed.”

Unemployed and on benefits

After leaving Scottish Water, Shields began an IT course at college but packed it in after his first court appearance in September when he realised jail was looming.

His lawyer admitted there was “little chance” of Shields, who was getting £65 per-week via a Job Seeker’s Allowance, getting a job in the current climate.

Sheriff MacKinnon told Shields: “Your behaviour on this occasion was not only dishonest, it was calculated and callous.

“You took advantage of the trust placed in you by the complainer.

“To protect the public from serious harm I impose a supervised release order of six months.

“After you are released you must report to a supervising officer, and if you breach the order you are liable to return to prison.”

A Scottish Water spokesman said previously: “This was a personal matter between to former agency staff who are no longer working with us.

“No Scottish Water money was lost.”

The penny sat benignly in the middle of the sidewalk. He wasn’t sure why he felt compelled to

The penny sat benignly in the middle of the sidewalk.

He wasn’t sure why he felt compelled to pick it up, but he did. Turning the small disk in his hands, watching the afternoon sun glint off of its copper facade, he felt that it was hot – almost uncomfortably so.

On one side of the coin was a depiction of a grand building; one the other, the face of a man who had been father to many in his time.

Flip a coin.

He thought back to his own father. “Make your own luck,” the man had been fond of saying, but he had been the one to squander the household funds on a series of gambles.

Heads… or tails?

Even with a fifty-fifty chance, any decision was a gamble. And outside of recreational gambling, his father had held true to his motto and shied away from all choices. He had been a tiny man in a husky shell, one who could cause fear in others, but feared the simplest of life’s challenges when he lay awake in the quiet of night.

Heads… or tails?

He thought about how his father, coward though he was, made the most final decision of his life.

Or, rather, he had helped someone else make the decision. Because after all, nobody likes a cheater.

Flip a coin.

Even in a friendly game – even in a small gamble – loaded dice can cause the competition to react violently.

But even as his father had been given the decision, he himself was given a decision. Not everyone is their father. And maybe, just maybe, not every decision is a gamble.

Heads… or tails?

He looked, again, at the coin nestled in his sweaty palm.

Call it.

And, with a minute shake of his head, he tossed the penny up to the heavens.

We didn’t come to Vegas to gamble. We didn’t come to watch a volcano explode or listen to singing go

We didn’t come to Vegas to gamble.

We didn’t come to watch a volcano explode or listen to singing gondoliers.

Sure, we did all those things and more, but…

We came to Vegas to get (re)married by Elvis.

Everything else was mere icing on the cake—neon, blinking icing on a gold lame’ cake.

This was my first visit to Vegas, and I wasn’t disappointed.

True, Sinatra’s Vegas now belongs to the ages, and gambling is about as exciting as watching golf on TV, but that didn’t matter.

When you enter a world to which you have but only one true expectation, and it’s met in spades, the rest is a bonus.

When time stands still, you can stop and smell the roses, and for as much as Vegas has to offer, I never once felt rushed.

It’s because she lives up to her reputation as the city that never sleeps—no point in hurrying when it’ll all be there waiting for you, regardless of when you arrive.

I didn’t hit any jackpots. I never went up big at any tables. I experienced neither the thrill of victory nor the agony of defeat.

But…

As I danced with my wife while a young, gold lame’ Elvis serenaded us, vows freshly renewed and sealed with a kiss, I realized something:

You don’t have to beat the house to walk away a winner in Vegas.
