2 days in a row, now! I’m back on track *again*! Anyway, I’ve completely revamped the Games page (previously titled “Freeware”), and I’ve added some definitions of the local variables. Here’s what the updated Games page now looks like:

I’ve removed unused games such as FBalling, Horde Demo, and Pizzle Demo. BUT, I’ve added the two Ball Wars games back and put up two new games - Ratio and Pixel. Download them from the Games page. I’m hoping to start work with Adobe Flash finally so you guys can play for this site instead of always having to download.

Here’s an interestingly simple animation I created to use as an avatar. I think the title for this post [ ] has a pimple with the font I used to make it…that was not intentional. Seriously.

I made it in the Game Maker built in paint software, then blended it together with GIMP. That’s about it, I think…I’ll announce a new game prototype soon. Sorry for not posting in so long, I’ve been really busy with exams and stuff. Yes, I said stuff. I’m not in English class right now, so it’s my right as an American citizen to say that.

The gears are spinning again – we got a bunch of stuff done – and I have a screenshot to prove it!

If you go check the Checklist, you’ll notice a couple of things have turned a beautiful green.

I managed to show them all off with a single screenshot (yay!)

Notice:

The HUD is gone, excpet for the stats of the unit you selected and the end turn button. The other button you see is a notifier that tells you if you’ll have enough AP to take an action after you move to the cursor.

There’s a horse (yay!) and a guy riding it. Calvary. With working collisions. Oh yes. Notice: I actually took my time spriting the horse – trying to get a style down for the rest of the graphical revamp later. Check it out:

It’s in widescreen – this isn’t default! It’s a custom resolution! Now anyone can have the game fit their monitor, yay! (Shown at my 1440×900 resolution)

Screenshot: http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/71/horseshudwidescreen.png

(Linked because it’s too big to post here)

Pretty nice, huh? Next up will be speed bonuses, and after that the collision revamp and ai revamp. Good things are in the future.

Also notice: The website’s been cleaned up. Now you can access the latest build AND the latest checklist through the navagation bar at the top of the screen! Classy!

Until next update,

The game is slowly starting to take form, and I’ve recieved some spritesheets for the main character, making the game easier to visualise. I added a basic enemy (a bat) so I could see how easy the weapons were to aim and fire. The storyline is still heavily under-development, the location is either somewhere in space or a parallel universe.

Su versión visible se llama PROBABLY YOU WON’T MAKE IT.

I’m loving the mild sci-fi-dystopian-cyberpunk thing this game has going on aesthetically, I just hope that the storyline is taken seriously and the game isn’t just a continual string of “missions” that seem more like unrelated scenarios. For some reason I’m reminded of the game Syndicate Wars.

The core engine is coming along nicely, I’ve added four-directional shooting, a much better (and flexible) weapon system, each weapon now runs it’s own seperate script rather than plugging in variables from an array, I might even have these externally loaded so I can have downloadable weapons. Maybe. I added a “Secret Areas” function that counts towards a stat which will be shown at the end of the game. I need to add more stat tracking variables because people seem to love that shit, (I know I do).

NB: The sprites used in the pictures below are used to indicate to me which sprite is being shown when, hence the labels and direction arrows. This is just so I can make sure the right sprites are being shown so that when I get the real character sprites I can just plug them into the engine and it’ll all run smooth.

This fellow is an artist interested in drawing, painting, video games, photography, and dreams. He seems most involved in photography lately, as far as I know. He seems like the stealthy sort of artist: I don’t know quite what he’s doing, but it’s probably cool.

I found his work through the now-legendary Seiklus and discovered that it’s all worth looking at. In addition, his website has various links to other inpirational – or otherwise interesting – things.

The way I’ve built my tilesets, I have to make the level, then put down all the outlines on the architecture (don’t ask). What this means is that a level has to be entirely finished gameplay-wise before I put all the outlines down, since changing anything after that involves two steps, which is kind of a pain in the ass, but oh well.

So I finished a level, and I tested it to make sure I didn’t screw it up. After testing it, I realized that it wasn’t exactly clear what I wanted the players to do, so I added in some spikes to direct them the way I wanted them to go. (That is called “The player is always wrong and I am awesome so do it my way,” and I’m sure there’s another lesson in there somewhere too). Then I added in the outlines. That was two days ago.

Then I was running through the entire game again today (since apparently I had nothing better to do) and I realized that (a) I’d made one entire passage pointless with those spikes, and (b) I’d made the level impossible to complete. So…I had to rearrange the architecture significantly, THEN redo the outlines. It probably only took ten minutes, but it was still a face-palm moment.

So, today’s lesson that I will probably never learn: Don’t change anything after testing if you don’t plan on testing it again! You will inevitably screw up the entire level. If you’re me.

Progress today: Finished another level (up to 9!), researched saving to INIs, ate a sandwich.

Yes, I drew that in paint. Click on it for full resolution. Skip would be the level select, and Stuff is options, but I figure it’s more fun to just click on them than to try and explain it. Also finished another level, so the total is 8 at this point…yep.

Unfortunately, my hacked together platformer engine is, well, pretty hacked together, so the characters keep getting stuck in walls. Not that often, but often enough to be ridiculously frustrating. Gotta figure that one out.

Normal vs. Bloom Effect

The first image is without bloom, the second with bloom. Since I have to turn synchronisation off to get full fps with the bloom effect, I’m going to scrap it altogether, it doesn’t look as good as I thought anyway. It’s not so much dream-like as it is tacky.

Hopefully I hear back from the sprite artist who did the original character, and this project can really get under way. Failing that, I’m going to create placeholders (however this will be a bitch because I’ll have to re-align everything when the new sprites are done).

The tiles are all auto-tiled, which means I just place down solids and then a script places tiles automatically based on it’s relation to other blocks. The randomised sections (with various vines growing through them) are based on a seed value ‘XXXX’, so that they will always be the same as long as I use the same seed value. I’m toying with the idea of having the game save a random seed on first run (and then use that same seed from then on) so that everybody has slightly different tiles whilst playing.

Anyway, here’s some more pre-WIP screenshots…

After using pre-built engines in the past, and running into issues because the engine wasn’t tailored to the sort of platform game I wanted to make, I decided that it was better for me in the long run to create the whole thing from scratch. At the moment, the engine is solid as a rock. The collisions are pixel-perfect and the movement is speed based (it uses acceleration, friction and drag rather than a set x+=4; system that many platformers use). I still need sprites to really get this project moving along. More info here.

I want the game to have a glow effect throughout, to try and create a dream-like landscape. I’m also going to play around with blend modes a fair bit this week to see what sort of effects I can create…

The title sounds like the name of book, doesnt it??

I apologize for the severe lack of updates in posts. I’ve been busy with a whole lot and have let my blog just slip lately.

One of the things I’ve been especially busy with is something I’ve been doing for years, though I’m not much better at it than I was a couple years ago. It’s called programming. The process of making applications and such things for the computer using line by line of seemingly gibberish tongues that a computer can interpret. You can make a computer do just about anything if you know how, and programming is essential to designing an interface to do just that – anything and everything.

When I was a wee one, I remember getting into programming firstly using the slightly more simple language (called GML) found in a wonderful program called Game Maker. This program, with it’s own simplified and dumbed-down language, made it a bit easier to create 2D computer games. Of course, some have attempted to make complex 3D full-blown games… but suffice to say the system wasn’t built for that.

And then, seeing how interested I was in it, my mom found me a program called Phrogram – it was something like a preface to a real computer programming language. BASIC, to be exact. I remember trying to learn how to use Phrogram and struggling in an unfamiliar syntax with unfamiliar concepts. I was very new to a programming language like that, so it was hard for me to create anything worthwhile. And being the (watch me swallow my pride here!) somewhat attention-deficit child I was, I gave up on it after a while.

What happened after that? I gave it about a year to settle. I moved on to different hobbies, got more focused on school and waited it out.

And then, when my mind was ready, I took a huge leap.

I stopped before I let it go this far.

I began learning how to use a language called C++. This language was the most complex one I had ever heard of, and yet, with great responsibility comes great power. (Or was it vica versa?). I tried very hard to learn it for a while, but even after a year, my mind just wasn’t ready for a language of that calibur. The minute I started getting into pointers and arrays, I jumped ship screaming bloody murder.

So I waited another year or so. I made occasional attempts to re-learn what I already knew about C++ so I could keep it in my memory, but it’s not like it’s very helpful. I didn’t make anything useful out of what I knew of it; I couldn’t have, I knew so little.

And now, here I am. I regularly switch back and forth between programming for Microsoft’s .NET Framework in the language of C#, and learning how to use Java intently. I’m partially fluent with C++ too (I got those pointers down!!), and I spend some time every day working on learning more about these languages.

This has been taking a large part of my Unschooling time each day. I focus on learning the languages and then implementing them, in that order. You could pass this off and say it’s another one of my passing hobbies, and you would probably be right, it probably is. However, I will come back to this, again and again, being a better programmer each time.

I would like to make a shout out to Sun for their wonderful Netbeans program. Cheers to the creators of Java, for making an IDE that makes using Java easier!

‘Til next time,

I couldn’t think of a more nicer title for this post, so basically you know what this is about

I couldn’t think of a more nicer title for this post, so basically you know what this is about. Me bashing Windows and praising Ubuntu.

What is my case you may ask?

It all started on Saturday when I was thinking about how I could use Ubuntu to my advantage and I remembered a long time ago (I believe 2 or 3 years ago?) I tried it once but after a few weeks I switched back. I was reading some of my old blog posts and came upon my Linux tips. Then I started thinking you know, Linux is actually amazing. So I got out my Ubuntu 9.04 disk and installed the system onto my computer. Now, I still had my Windows XP installation with the GRUB bootloader when I came across a problem. I put Ubuntu on the Largest Continuous Free Space on my hard drive, which was 2.4 GB…Just enough for an install of Ubuntu. I realized this when I tried to install the updates and it said I had 216 MB of hard disk space left, not enough to update. Then I knew I was in trouble. What could I do? I thought. I got gparted and tried to edit the partition when I came across, heh funny thing, a triangle icon with an exclamation point inside of it. This meant it couldn’t be resized and had to be formatted. Great, so now what? I tried to get it checked with CHKDISK (I believe that’s the program, too bad if I’m wrong!) and when it finished the exclamation point went away in gparted. So I thought yes! I can change it now, right? Wrong. It just gave me an error message and eventually leading me to just deleting the partition.

So now I put Ubuntu on with 80GB, and the other 50GB goes to Windows XP. So now that that was out of the way there was another problem. GRUB disappeared! Huh? I installed Ubuntu first and then Windows XP. So then I thought about trying to be smart. Maybe I can edit the Windows bootloader! So I go in there, set it so that it boots to partition 1, remove the ugly windows stuff, and try it and…..FAIL. So now what….? It failed. I brought out my Ubuntu Live CD, popped it in, and accessed my ext3 filesystem drive with ubuntu. Hooray! I have access to it! I looked up how to get GRUB installed using Linux Live CD. Since it came with the wireless driver, no worries about having to deal with that. So I reinstalled GRUB by itself, I changed the GRUB Bootloader file and tada! I had a working bootloader again that was GRUB and booted into Linux and Windows XP. After that I simply said, Screw Windows! You can’t do anything Linux can do!

And that is so true. Think about it…. Linux can do anything Windows can do, but Windows can’t do everything Linux can do? Eh…Maybe Microsoft should learn something from this. So guess what Microsoft? I’m a Ubuntu freak now! For real though.

So why is this time different? Well you see, I finally realized how much more I can do with Linux than with Windows. I am still able to do my daily things, I am still able to play my games I like, and I get to do all this in lovely Linux. Who cares if I have lost some of the high-awesome graphics games? I don’t play games all my life, sheesh. I like to make practical use of my life. So what did I do once Linux got installed? (Jeeze, lots of questions today, right?)

I started putting stuff on there, I backed up about 3GB of my stuff I needed to keep, installed Diablo 2 and Diablo 2 MedianXL on there, and they work perfectly fine with Wine. Then I tried Game Maker, and boy was that fun to deal with. You see, I’ve been using Game Maker for about 5 years now, and if I didn’t have this, as you know with the Z-Gamers V.3 website, I would be saddened alot because I wouldn’t be able to use Linux all the time now. But guess what? I got it working under Virtualbox Windows XP installation! Awesomeness! There are three catches to it, but they are minor:
1) I have to import a mouse cursor so that I know where the real position is if it is offset.
2) There are no sounds. But that’s not hard to add in because you just play them….And that’s it! I could go on XP for 2 seconds if I needed to verify if it worked or not.
3)Games must not be 3D and must be tested in fullscreen. No 3D may be a big deal, but here’s my plan for FF3D. Most of the stuff I have to develop is through code. I develop all my code, just run it on Linux to make sure no errors occur, and LATER deal with the 3D coding if there are problems. I think I am so fluent in GML coding and trust my abilities with it that I will not need to test every little aspect of it to know it is working. In fact, I found out you can test stuff in 2D mode, and then just activate 3D mode with the models and 3D drawing once you get on Windows XP. And fullscreen? No big deal, just aligns stuff. Again, number 1 with the mouse cursor makes sure it is not off center.

So what else do I love about Ubuntu? I can access my server directly from the OS….awesome.
I can install packages right on the fly and have new programs….Awesome.
Starting to learn Java Object-Oriented Programming….Awesome also.
Improving my Bash programming skills….Awesome.
Learning new things about Ubuntu everyday….Great!
Able to do alot more than with Windows and still do everything I did with Windows…EPIC.

I have to say….I just LOVE Ubuntu now. I just can’t stop now…I haven’t logged on XP since that epic failure described above…I do not wish to go back unless I have a super problem, which is fixable with Linux of course and not Windows . I guess that is about it.

After every build we’re going to try and do an “Impressions” post, where we gather

After every build we’re going to try and do an “Impressions” post, where we gather the most important of the feedback we’ve gotten and put it to use. This is 6 days after the release of the first build, and the young, unstable forum threads and topics are sliding past the first page (anyone that wants to legally bump them would be great).

So now’s the time to think about the next build. Here’s a couple of comments that I thought were very relevant and shows us something we had to do. Feel free to chime in and help us with our brainstorm.

1.) The HUD/GUI – This has been a concern for a couple of people, so it’s our concern now. It’s taking up too much of the screen, and it’s bothersome to click for simple tasks such as moving and attacking. Nailog had already suggested to get rid of it entirely, and I actually may do that, but instead just opening a “mini hud” over the heads of units when you hover over them for a second. This will have thier stats and special abilities, but things like moving and attacking will be done just by clicking on the proper target.

A random comment to back this up (not Nailog, discussed that already):

I can see a lot of work went into this. Presentation is very nice, unfortunately controlling your army is kinda awkward. Having to click each individual soldier and then moving over to click the “move” box is really cumbersome. Why can’t i just select where I want him to move after selecting him by left clicking on the field. And then just right click an enemy to attack him. Great base engine though.

The problem of micro-controlling your army can be fixed as well with multi-selection and temporary ai switching, however I’m not sure if that idea will make build 2 or not.

2.) The Graphics – While at one point during the development process I decided to beef the graphics, I had changed my mind and instead made them not-placeholder. Currently the graphic style is in limbo – Pixelled soldiers but with photoshopped backgrounds and low-res scaled textures? Gross. I figured because we were focusing on the engine, many people would not notice in the first build. Wrong.

Comments used to back this up:

The graphics is very low-def the game would work a lot more better with high resolution textures.

And a bunch of other less-helpful ones like “graphics could use some work” etc.

I think first off, we need to establish a set style for our game. We need to stop being lazy photoshoppers and get down and pixel those huge annoying trees. After I do all then and don’t scale them, it should look nice. However, it will run slower, but I have some optimization ideas in mind. (By the way, we had 0 complaints about the game speed as of now! Great!)

3.) Glitches – So far (and I’m proud of this, mind you), there have only been two detected bugs with the game. I’ll list them here:

Guys getting stuck in stuff/on other people – This is a collision glitch we are aware about, and we’ll try and re-write the collision system for the next build so this doesn’t happen. It’s recorded in this humorous account from a player (DataRealms forums):

Interesting game. I always though a movement system like this would be neat. It does end up being a lot more work to do it this way, however.
Exhibit A:
http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/2149322/screenshot100.png
Can’t get out of that spot even though there is plenty of room. Also, there was a crossbowman in there that was stuck and forced to shoot this poor bugger point-blank in the forehead to dislodge himself.
There was only one enemy left, too. He was a crossbowman as well. He got stuck in a wall, just like Keith here. Unfortunately, this made it difficult for everyone to finish the battle and go home for lunch.
All in all, interesting premise for a game. Good luck.

Yeah, that needs being worked on, I think. It’s on the to do list (by the way, the official checklist won’t come out for a little bit more, so don’t expect this to be it – it isn’t!

Health dropping below 0 for a split second just before death – While I actually never saw this one, apparently a couple of people have. They didn’t give much information other than that, so I’ll have to find it. Shouldn’t be hard, shouldn’t take long.

4) Annoying Music Loop – We’re aware of this – our music producers are working on this at the moment and will fix the loop. Also, on a very related complaint, people have said that The menu music didn’t fit the game. That’s ok, considering that it was just temporary all along and it will be replaced soon.

Otherwise, no complaints about the battle music.

And besides all that, there were ALOT of good comments. More than there were bad ones (actually, there were no bad comments. Everyone that had something constructive to say also had good stuff to say and they liked the game.)

That’s all for the first week (almost a whole week, whatever) of impressions. I’ll post up the checklist next, most likely.
