About year ago I learned that IGN and Fox executives had plans to revamp GameSpy, the oft-overlooke

About year ago I learned that IGN and Fox executives had plans to revamp GameSpy, the oft-overlooked game site purchased by IGN Entertainment in 2004. GameSpy has seen various half-improvements, stutter steps, design shifts, deadline changes, and more, and very few of the original staff felt all that good about it, as evidenced by staff changes, departures, and layoffs.

The recent editorial shift is probaby the biggest change the site has seen since the two companies merged, and it’s interesting to see what the new staff, led by Will Tuttle, is doing. A majority of the editorial is humor. Yes, there are still reports on games, but there are also feature stories like this, “Disastvertising: The Worst in Gaming PR.”

Have you ever tried and succeeded in writing something truly funny? The clever, talented folks at The Onion have, year after year, written some of the funniest articles and produced the funniest videos the world has ever seen. GameSpy isn’t even close to reach that level of gut-wrenching humor. But articles like “Disastervising” give me hope for GameSpy.

Unlike the parody-driven Onion, this article points out the absurdity in gaming PR stunts, and it’s quite amazing to see just how insanely ridiculous said stunts are. At first I dreaded reading the piece. But the level of detail presented and the approach the writer took were clever, witty, and more often than not, funny.

Other gaming sites have tried and continue to emply humor as their main means of covering the game industry, such as GamesRadar.com. How well does GameSpy match up, or surpass GamesRadar?

Don’t have extra knowledge about this game and it’s not really my style, but this release came across the inbox and just looked interesting for some reason.

If this sounds like your cup of tea hit the link below to do some beta-testing.

So here you go — the release:

ijji.com Selects FilePlanet to Facilitate Closed Beta for Huxley: The Dystopia

Leading North American Online Games Publisher Enlists IGN Download Site for Beta Signups and Key Distribution

IRVINE, Calif. and SAN FRANCISCO, June 4 /PRNewswire/ — ijji.com, the premier seven million members-strong online destination for hardcore gamers, has partnered with IGN’s FilePlanet to encourage beta signups and distribute beta keys for its highly anticipated massively multi-player online first-person shooter (MMOFPS) Huxley: The Dystopia. The Unreal Engine 3-powered game combines the twitch-based fast-action game play of a FPS with the cerebral character development and persistent city of an MMO, in a gritty adventure through a post-apocalyptic world. The FilePlanet beta signup page can be found online at www.fileplanet.com/promotions/huxley/beta/.

The partnership between ijji.com and FilePlanet.com – one of the most visited video game download sites on the internet – marks the first time players will be able to access the long awaited online game, as well as a strong alliance between two industry greats. ijji.com brings expertise in launching quality and targeted hardcore titles to online gamers, while FilePlanet possesses a stellar track record in reaching those audiences.

In addition to the participants to whom ijji.com granted beta access, FilePlanet will begin selecting additional testers from its own community members to receive beta keys to Huxley: The Dystopia on June 3. The closed beta starts on the same day and all those with keys are welcome to enter the game and see the world of Huxley for the first time. This exclusive closed beta runs through June 14, and is open from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM PDT, daily. The first stages of closed beta testing will feature the game’s character creation and customization, and the player-versus-player (PvP) gameplay. Additional features, such as player-versus-environment (PvE), will debut in subsequent testing periods.

“This collaboration will bring ijji.com an expanded reach to players that are sure to enjoy being among the first to see and experience the long-awaited Huxley: The Dystopia,” said Philip Yun, CEO, NHN USA, which hosts ijji.com. “IGN’s media properties and online technology services are premier in their respective industries, and we are honored to align ourselves with such a proven team.”

The first of its kind, Huxley: The Dystopia complements its unique blend of game play with an engrossing story. In the not so distant future, a huge swarm of Nuclearite clouds passing through our solar system shatter the Earth’s moon. Lunar fragments mingled with the radioactive Nuclearites shower Earth with debris, catapulting the World into the greatest upheaval in history. In this post-apocalyptic world human beings have mutated and divided into Sapiens, Alternatives and Hybrids. The Sapiens and Alternatives both battle for control of the Earth’s resources as the Hybrids, a crossbreed third race, fight for their very survival. Huxley fans, game enthusiasts and anyone curious to find out more can check out the teaser site at http://huxley.ijji.com/. For more information on ijji.com, go to www.ijji.com.

About ijji.com and NHN USA

In two weeks, I move to Los Angeles. Phew, I said it.

I will be joining Andrew “Skip” Pfister, former podcast editor for 1UP.com, and Sterling McGarvey, now former editor at GameSpy, as part of a fresh batch of recruits for the online editorial team at G4tv.com. Try not to judge a book by its cover…yet — there are massive changes coming to G4tv.com very soon.

My job will be very similar to the work I’ve been doing for the past several years, both at 1UP, MTV News and as a freelancer. I will be reporting the news. Originally, I had intended to turn this blog into a rebellious outlet for my reporting, giving poor-paying freelance the finger and exercising my talents through this gloriously bland-looking blog. Then, I realized I needed to help make rent. Bad paying freelance is better than no paying freelance.

But I’m very lucky, very humbled by the opportunity to continue doing what I love at G4tv.com. In an economy where most people are struggling to find a job period, to be fortune enough to have options was something I did not take lightly. G4tv.com is particularly exciting, an opportunity to shape the editorial direction of a new outlet, work in close proximity with good friends and colleagues (the working from home thing has grown old) and still stay in California.

I almost moved to New York, but chose not to.

You can start following my work over at G4tv.com, but since working for G4tv.com involves a move to Los Angeles, my contributions will occur in spurts. We are all scheduled to start working in the G4tv.com offices the week before E3, right around the time some big changes to the site are supposed to drop.

I will miss heading to the 1UP.com offices, as I have done for the past month or so, to record Listen Up with John Davison, Garnett Lee and David Ellis. I consider all three of them close friends, and will miss them (and many others) dearly when I move onto The Next Big Thing ™. Unless plans change, I will still be on the next two episodes. Try not to say anything too stupid, Patrick.

But change is good. Change is good.

What happens to this blog? I’m not sure. As expected, it fell by the wayside. I’m considering opening up a Tumblr. Maybe it will continue to be a place I drop the material that doesn’t make sense elsewhere. Or I can just drop LOST theories until the new season premieres. Suggestions are welcome.

Thanks for reading. The best is yet to come.

I’m in San Francisco all week attending the 2009 Game Developers Conference with my company, G

I’m in San Francisco all week attending the 2009 Game Developers Conference with my company, GameSpy. GDC is the game industry’s big trade show of the year (at least among the industry itself — the far more famous E3 Expo is much more tailored toward impressing retailers and generating buzz with consumers), where the people who make games get together to talk tech, make deals, network and even learn (it really IS a conference — there are dozens of sessions each day on everything from building games to high level emerging concepts on the development & business fronts). And because we develop technology for people who build games, it’s our big show of the year too. We have a ginourmous booth in one of the convention halls, we throw a swanky party, and we take on somewhere between 30 and 50 client meetings over the course of 3 days. We also use the show to announce some of our big projects / deals — of which we usually have 3-4. So, it’s a big week for me and my colleagues! Prepping for it has had me stressed out, exhausted and cranky for the last few weeks — but now that the show’s here, I’m fairly psyched.

As the Senior Product Manager for the division, I’m somewhat in the eye of all of this, coordinating (and sometimes writing drafts of) press releases, getting the word out on our Website, making sure our product and account management teams have their messaging down, even soliciting designs for our annual t-shirt. Oh, and I usually get tasked with making the playlist for the aforementioned “swanky party” (no, I never miss a chance to impose my music snobbery on others). We’re also in the middle of launching a new product, which we’ll officially announce tomorrow. On Wednesday, we start alternating between non-stop talking and drinking — which will inevitably conclude with me curled into a ball in my airplane seat Friday night as I head home.

Nothing much else to say here, other than: other than running and hangin’ with the wife, that’s pretty much what I’ve been up to lately. I get a lot of “what exactly do you do” questions from friends and family, so I thought I’d share small slice of that.

I’ll be Twittering randomly as the week unfolds — so, if you’re looking for up-to-the-minute updates on where I’m at, what I’m up to, and how close I am to cracking, that’s a good way to track me.

I bought 3 new pc games on Friday in an orgy of spending. I installed one of them – Civ IV on Saturday and began playing it fine. I also installed gamespy to allow me to play online, since then my laptop has suffered.

Whenever i start it up it would take 3 times as long as it was waiting for gamespy to activate itself. Also i tried installing the second game i bought which was Settlers II. This just did not load at all, wouldnt go past the install wizard. I grew increasingly fed up of this so yesterday i removed gamespy from my pc. Tried to install 3rd game today – Age of Empires III and the same thing happened, install wizard dosent even complete then the box diasappears and nothing else happens.

What is going on? If anyone reading this can help me then please leave me a comment. Its driving me nuts.

via Bio Break, I was reading a column in GameSpy about the lack of challenge in WoW. Don’t get

via Bio Break, I was reading a column in GameSpy about the lack of challenge in WoW. Don’t get me wrong, now that I’ve seen most of the raid content for myself, I can understand where that’s coming from (and it’s a subject for another day!)

But. It isn’t the raid content that he’s talking about. It isn’t endgame at all, in fact. He’s talking about the levelling curve and how Blizzard have mostly trivialised it. And if you want to go even faster, you can grab bind on account items that adjust themselves to match the level of your alts. And because they are BoA, once you have finished you can send them on to another alt. Although by definition, heirloom items are only available to players with max level characters, to help speed up the levelling of their alts.

Not only that but people also have easy access to websites like wowhead and addons like questhelper which neatly remove any residual quest related frustrations anyone may have had with not finding things or puzzle solving.

All of these things conspire to make questing and levelling a trivial (but still time consuming) part of the game. Aside from the fact that no one forces you to go look things up every single time you get stumped for more than half a millisecond, what we are seeing is a fundamentally different way in how players respond to in game quests.

They are no longer viewed as fun puzzles. Instead, they’ve become sleepers (or even speedbumps) on the railway of levelling, and the objective of most passengers is to get past them as quickly as possible on their way to their final destination. Levelling quest rewards are largely ignorable. Even if they are useful upgrades, you’ll grow out of them soon enough. Some questlines will have particularly engaging storylines or fun tweaks. Those are the equivalent of the Settle-Carlisle scenic route*. Pretty, a fun day out, and good for photo/screenshot opportunities. But you’d skip them if you were in a hurry.

This is not a WoW-specific paradigm shift.

Looking at newer games, they’ve all been tweaking to make the questing process more streamlined and single player friendly. WAR has its red blobs (which actually fulfil much the same function as questhelper, but more nicely implemented and integrated) which I think have been roundly welcomed. Anyone want to complain that levelling in WAR is too easy? They’ve eased their levelling curve too. You don’t even have to worry about accidentally pulling groups because most mobs can be solo pulled.

I don’t think people complain, because they’re not unhappy with it. And WAR in particular does offer other ways to level, the solo questing isn’t supposed to be challenging so much as to just give you something to do inbetween scenarios.

Why does the levelling curve need to ease off?

This one is obvious. In any level based game with multiple expansions, if you want to make your game appealing to new players, they need to be able to catch up to the pack. Is there any way to do this other than to speed up the low level game?

Spread out the pack, either by being very very alt friendly or by spreading the appealing content through all levels and letting players stop at a place they like.

Let new players start at higher levels. Still would need some kind of tutorial.

mentoring schemes (sidekicking, or letting you help a friend to level faster)

Nuke the old content at the start of every expansion. Let everyone start from level 1 again together.

Nuke the whole server regularly.

DITCH LEVELS! (wait, am I shouting? )

I think we’re seeing a paradigm shift on quests and level based games. WoW is, for logical reasons, trivialising its levelling game. This will be less fun for people who enjoyed the challenge (I’d direct them to LOTRO where the quests are much more old-school style), but it’s a strange reason for not trying WoW because the high level quests in TBC and Wrath are brilliant.

The level-by-quest design served MMOs, and WoW in particular well but we’re seeing how it fails in a mature game now. Once you have seen the stories once, you don’t need to see them again. New players need to be able to catch up.

We need a new scheme for levelling. WAR with its multiple options, multiple zones, and public quests is surely on to something. So why is the prospect of levelling an alt in WAR so unappealing?

* You have to love that the Settle-Carlisle railway doesn’t have any pictures of scenery on the front page, although the scenery is the main reason that it’s famous. There is a picture of a station cat on the station page though.
