Along with many other blogs, websites, or other publications, I decided to give my own little rememb

Along with many other blogs, websites, or other publications, I decided to give my own little remembrance of the past five years of addiction WoW. There’s been high points, low points, in between points, and many points that I’m not sure where they belong. However, the fact that I’m still playing and logging on daily after five years has to mean something.

Oh, and the 9+ million subscribers. But that’s just pocket change, right?

I’ve been a Blizzard fanboy for a while. I started with Warcraft 2, enjoyed it so much that I bought the battlechest with Warcraft 1 and Warcraft 2 expansion, and haven’t looked back. I’ve played every single Blizzard game for the PC, and am eagerly waiting for the future releases. (It doesn’t hurt that I have a Starcraft 2 beta signup from BlizzCon ‘08)

As for WoW though, my first experience was actually unintentional. I was playing Diablo 2, looked around the Blizzard website, and noticed the WoW page. I took a peek around, and noticed that it was in open beta phase for server stress tests. Eager to check out this new product, I happily downloaded it and wondered what was in store. I wasn’t dissapointed, that’s for sure.

My very first character, the first Corath in all of WoW, was a Night Elf priest. I played him until level 6-8ish, but got very frustrated with the quest that leads you to the Barrow Dens – a quest that’s still a pain. After that, I decided to try a Night Elf druid, and loved it. Open beta ended a short time later, but it left its impression on me – after my first day of playing, I went to the local EB Games and pre-ordered the game for when it came out.

Because of how much fun I had with it, I contacted a good friend of mine that I knew in real life but had moved away, who I played many games with over the years (SNES and upwards). I told him about this awesome new game, and he decided to give it a try. To this day, Zirath and I are still great friends and in the same guild.

So, release day comes around. Fortunately, I didn’t start work until one o’clock, so I was able to get to EB at opening and head home to install. Zirath had to phone me to create a new account, as he didn’t have a credit card, and the signup process needed one. I gave him my credit card number, then we deleted it from his account immediately so he could buy game cards. We decided to roll on a random server, and chose Doomhammer because the name was good.

I ended up rolling the second Corath, my very first character in live WoW, a Night Elf druid. Zirath rolled a Night Elf hunter, a character he still uses from time to time today. Unfortunately I can’t say the same about mine… he’s stuck at level 26 in the Lakeshire inn.

We ended up in our first (and somewhat only) guild by using the guild recruitment forums on the WoW forums. Since then, I’ve never had to apply for a guild again. Legends of Valor on Doomhammer became Forever Legends on Perenolde after a free transfer to alleviate server population. Forever Legends decided to do a horde reroll on Vek’nilash and became Legends of Intoxication, which then merged with The Crimson Guard & Platinum Syndicate to form Band of Thorns, which I continue to be in today.

I can’t say the same about my characters. Corath the Night Elf druid, as I mentioned, has been mothballed. At the time, back in vanilla, to say that druids were a pain to level was an incredible understatement. Combine that with the fact that I wasn’t very good at the class at the time, and you get me rerolling Rocque, the Human mage. I stuck with him until we decided to do our reroll, but didn’t get him much raiding experience – something I regret to this day.

A bunch of people from our guild on Perenolde decided to reroll Horde, something that I’m incredibly glad that we did – and probably the best thing I’ve done in my WoW career. It let me meet new people, make new friends, and finally find things that I enjoy. My first new Horde character was Gushue, the Orc warlock. I got him to 60 (after a while), and raided with him all the way through vanilla – we ended up clearing Molten Core up to Lucifron (with only 28-30 people at most, I might add), all of Zul’Gurub, and all of Ahn’Qiraj 20.

Then Burning Crusade hit, and I volunteered to reroll a paladin for the guild, and Fandarel the Blood Elf was born. I healed through most of BC, going up to Serpentshrine Cavern. At the time, my wife decided to start playing the game as well, so I rolled a druid to level with her shaman the she had started, thus Asok was born. He was an alt for a long time until he hit 70, but then I realized something that has never happened to me in any MMO or other game – I was enjoying a melee class. Being able to tank and just shift forms and dps was a different feeling for me. It was actually really fun.

Once Asok hit 70, I got him geared up, and ended up being able to main tank all of Karazhan/Gruul’s/Magtheridon, and able to off-tank SSC and Tempest Keep. For the first time in my WoW career, I found a main character that I really enjoyed playing. Of course, I’m still an altaholic. I have a level 80 paladin (Fandarel), 80 shaman, 74 warlock (Gushue), 70 death knight, 68 hunter, and many others below that. Rocque is sitting at level 61 in Honor Hold, and I doubt he’ll do much for a while.

I went from being a backbencher in the guild to being an officer for a while, and now back to just being a regular guy. I’ve had five main characters, countless alts, and I’ve made a fair amount of gold – along with three characters having epic flying. All in all, I’ve invested a ton of time into this game, and I don’t regret any of it. If anything, I regret that it took so long for me to find a main character that I enjoyed so much. It’s kind of funny that I’m starting to level Gushue up again, and finding that I’m having fun with him. It goes in cycles, I suppose.

WoW has been out for five years, and has gone through a great number of changes. I remember that I had at one point bought a strategy guide for it when it first came out, shortly after release. It truly is too bad that I can’t find it anymore, just to see what the game was like back then. When I started the game, I was single. In the time that I’ve played, I’ve gotten married and had a kid.

My best memory of the game is still one run through Karazhan when I was on my paladin healing, I got to talking to a recent recruit to the guild, an Orc hunter. I found out that we lived in the same city, were close in ages, and through more talking, found out that we went to junior high together. Amazingly enough, her and I were great friends – and she happened to find our guild by mistake. We’ve since reconnected, and are still great friends.

Thank you, Blizzard, for making a great game. I can’t wait to see what’s still to come.

The game has been out for almost two weeks now, I know. I’m not trying to sell this game, I’m just here to announce to the world my absolute love for this game. As soon as I put in the game, I saw the intro movie and then made my way to the menu. The simple, wonderful, three-part opening screen which said “Special Ops,” “Campaign,” and “Multiplayer,” spurred me to promise myself not to write a blog post until the progress percentages underneath each section said 100%. So here it is.

I love this game. My first holy-shit-I-love-this experience with Call of Duty didn’t happen until December 27, 2008. I got home from Blockbuster (too broke to buy a game after laying down all of my christmas money for my new PS3) and slid Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare into the machine. The campaign took me the rest of that night and the first part of the next day to beat. The whole experience was essentially a stretched out loss of my gaming virginity: As it happened, I was too amazed to focus on anything else. I had so much fun with it that it ended quickly, and when the credits were done rolling, I sat there stunned and satisfied, but wishing it hadn’t ended.

Then, gazing longingly at the main menu, I noticed “Multiplayer.” At this point I had two weeks left in my winter recess, and in those two weeks, I fell in love with console gaming all over again.

Needless to say, when I heard about Modern Warfare 2, I freaked out. I spent hours on YouTube looking for gameplay clips and watching trailers. Nothing prepared me for this though. It’s SO fun and SO deep. From having to use trigger buttons to climb ice walls to defending my teammate (roommate) on the ground with an AC-130 gunship to ranking through the online challenges on a variety of very cool maps, I feel – as I put it to my girlfriend – like a little kid at christmas time. It’s awesome

Based on the opening sales, anyone who cares about the game already has it, so I won’t bore you with details. I probably would, but I have a Search and Destroy mission to get to.

Over and out.

Note: the following is meant to be informative and analytical. This should not be misinterpreted as an endorsement for gambling or other illegal activities.

Genre: card game
Number of players: minimum of 2 players; typical sizes can vary
Objective: to beat the other players

The above objective sounds vague, because really that is what these games are about: to win against the other players; as simple as that. How does one win in Poker/Texas Hold’em? A number of ways exist. The most obvious is to form the best hand possible, or at least have the best hand compared to the other players. Other legal means to win is through psychology. Understanding an opponent’s body language and other tells gives players an edge on how to best manipulate their opponents (e.g. force them to fold).

As implied, Poker and Texas Hold’em are games that best enforce learning about psychology and kinesthetic (body language). Both allow for a player to gain the best edge over their opponents. The game can teach one discipline as well. Not only does one learn the body language of others, but one also learns to conceal their own body language; after all, one does not want to give away too much recklessly. When playing with chips, one needs to learn how to best manage their resources in order to pace themselves or ensure that they can play as long as they intend.

Next time: Kingsburg.

I can’t believe it’s been a month already since my videocard died! Time can pass so quickly sometimes. At the same time, it’s been a somewhat painful wait because the videocard I still want (XFX Radeon 5850) is extremely scarce. Occasionally Newegg or some other shop has a few in stock, but at a greatly inflated price. Currently, the 5850’s are going for $310 or more. A month ago, I placed a preorder on Amazon for $260 and I’m sure the price is going to keep rising. I could spend the extra $50+, but I keep hoping that Amazon is going to flex their muscle and finally get some product.

I’m growing extremely impatient with ATI/AMD for doing such a bad job supplying the market with their latest cards. It’s probable that the factories are having a hard time producing the new GPU, the Cypress. With such a low supply, big computer makers get the highest priority, which doesn’t leave much for the enthusiast market. In addition, the far more expensive 5870 is basically using the same components as the 5850. The 5870 is also in high demand and sold out everywhere, so ATI is going to focus on making and selling the 5870’s which should have a bigger profit margin.

ATI’s newest generation of videocards completely spanks nVidia’s current offerings. Unfortunately, nVidia is having a lot of problems, which means it’s likely they won’t provide any real competition for a while.

The Radeon 5770’s are in and out of stock, selling for around $180. I’m tempted to just give up and buy it, but I’ve waited a month already, so I figured I might as well wait a bit longer.

By the way, if you are looking to buy a videocard right now as well, Tom’s Hardware has a great guide that provides recommendations for videocards at any price point.

I’m doing quite fine with gaming since I have my gaming laptop (Gateway P-7811FX) and my Xbox 360. It’s also a much needed break from playing MMORPG’s. I spent several hundred hours playing Champions Online and Aion in September and October and I’m definitely burned out.

The Entertainment Software Association is jumping for joy today over President Barack Obama’s

The Entertainment Software Association is jumping for joy today over President Barack Obama’s acceptance of video games as an educational tool. As part of a bigger plan to boost education in science, technology, engineering and math, two game design competitions were announced, and the results will be used in classrooms, libraries and community organizations.

One of the contests will challenge game designers to create levels in last year’s Playstation 3 exclusive LittleBigPlanet, stressing science and math. The winning levels will be distributed for free, as all LBP levels are, and Sony will also donate 1,000 PS3s, along with the game, to libraries and community groups in low-income areas.

The other contest is a straight-up math and science-themed game design competition. Speaking to Kotaku, ESA President and CEO Michael Gallagher said the games could reach school classrooms by next fall. He beamed that today is a “very, very good day” for the gaming industry and “a significant leap into maturity and toward acceptance.”

This might sound silly, but I’m hoping that whatever comes out of these contests isn’t overtly educational, because that concept is neither new nor exciting. I played Number Munchers in elementary school, and while I was happy to be gaming instead of solving problems on paper, deep down I’d rather have been playing Pac-Man, or better yet, Super Mario Bros. Fast forward 20 years, and you’ve got the “Heating Plastics” game at the Nobel Prize’s Web site, which I could barely sit through long enough to find out how to play. It’s like chloroform.

Games are certainly capable of hiding their educational qualities. If you play an RPG, you’ll pick up resource management skills. If you play a strategy game, you’ll deal with conflicting and complicated decisions. Play Portal or World of Goo and you’ll learn a thing or two about physics. I don’t think math and science skills are impossible to bake into game types that kids really want to be playing. The trick is to mask it, otherwise it’s just another educational game the kid will forget once he or she is back home with the Wii.

So yes, games industry, today is an important day. Don’t blow it.
