Like you didn’t already know. Actually, scratch that, you didn’t. Thats why you’re

Like you didn’t already know. Actually, scratch that, you didn’t. Thats why you’re reading this, you sorry waste of human speck. If you already had this information you’d be writing your own blog about it, now wouldn’t you? It’s either that, or you’re aware, you may have read it in the headlines somewhere, but are in complete and utter denial. Its you who I take the most umbridge with. It is you who are the largest ink splattering on a 3 year old’s abstract painting of life. It is you who are the lousy metaphor to which I use to segway into my next topic.

Actually, I forgot where I was going with this. I don’t really have a topic at hand as this is more or less contractual obligation. Hell I barely even listen to metal anymore. You want to know why? because all you fuck twats ruined it. Yes, I’m referring to you again. All you lousy, misshapen cunts who get “mad br00tal” with your “siqq breakdowns” and your overindulging raping of bands who are actually good.

“But Ryan!” you exclaim, like chattering insects, “metal has been based around taking influences from other bands and using them to their fullest effect”. To which I respond with a resounding “fuck off”. I’m sick and tired of having conversations with scene kids who don’t know their At the Gates from their Darkest Hour and actively defend Attack, Attack!

SERIOUSLY people defend that band. People like that shit. It blows my fucking mind. I think the only thing that keeps me sane at night is the deluded hope that Brokencyde is in actuality some kind of social experiment and really, we’re the ones who are being played. Like the world’s biggest April Fool’s joke.

These days, any form of “heavy” music has been modified into some shallow bastardized version of itself. Its more about looking good then being good. If you’re not roughly 120 pounds where the majority of your weight comes from your hairspray (edit: apparently beards have been given the official hipster douchebag seal of approval.), your chances of getting anywhere is minimal, if not nonexistent.

The majority of people who listen to this bull hockey are in the ages of 14-17, due to social weeding exterminating any fool who jocks this crap above the age of 18. So really what I’m getting at is this is the parent’s fault.

Thus, I’m conducting a public service announcement towards all parents. Go through your child’s music collection, scroll through their iTunes (since god knows kids these days are oblivious to the concept of CD and not being spoiled, entitled, instant gratification douchecocks.) and take a look at their selection. If you find any of the following artists in this proceeding list, exterminate them now, back of the shed old yeller style because they will never amount to anything positive in their lives and really, it’ll save you the embarrassment of knowing you raised a piece of shit.

Bands that make yo momma cry:

Attack, Attack!
Brokencyde
Burden of A Day
Dance, Gavin, Dance
Emerosa
Oceana
Oceano
Bring me the Horizon
Miss May I
Parkway Drive
A Day To Remember
White Chapel
Arise And Ruin
Emmure
Madball
Four Letter Lie
I Set My Friends on Fire
Escape the Fate
Our Last Night
Sing it Loud
The Higher
Cute is What we Aim For
Breathe Carolina

[more updated list to follow]

That is all, for now.

Love, always

First, there was the original Star Wars Gangsta Rap. Unfortunately, I can’t embed that video, but it’s definitely worth the click.

Now, they’ve made a sequel – Chronicles, with what we’ll call tributes to several classic rap groups, including Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, Dr. Dre and Snoop, Digital Underground, Skee-Lo, Rob Base and DJ EZ-Rock, and I’m sure more that I missed.

Star Wars fans never die, just multiply.

Yes, I know I’ve said that Star Wars has lost some of its luster for me, but I still consider myself a fan, at least of the originals.

Here’s a bonus video with scenes from the actual films (and more risque lyrics)

So it’s that lovable time of week again where I try to deride or poke fun at some mundane fact

So it’s that lovable time of week again where I try to deride or poke fun at some mundane factoid hidden in America’s headlines. Minor problem, the news hasn’t been all that funny lately.

How the high holy heck am I supposed to write a weekly moment of mocking glory if you, the people of this fine world, don’t do anything stupid and dub it newsworthy??? I mean seriously, someone could’ve at least stuck their pecker in a toaster because they were convinced it would get them charged up for happy sex times, but NOOOOOOOOOO, people had to be normal this week. Heavens forbid.

Thus, I’ve decided to look at WTFs of yesteryear…not really WTFs, but to hell with ya’ll. I do what I want. For shits and giggles, here’s 10 music videos I’ve discovered over the years while surfing the internets..ALL OF THEM. For reasons that may seem arbitrary to your feeble minds, I’ve gone ahead and listed them in and order that only makes sense to me, thus creating both a Top 10 AND a WTF? Wednesday. Cower in fear of my great mind…or in fear of what you’re about to see, as a few of these are actually music videos for very popular artists in other countries.

10. Read A Book

I think Lil Jon has missed his calling as a educational rapper. Also, BET is utterly insane for airing this.

9. Run Mr. Taliban

This video is insanely funnier if you just focus on the face they chose for W.

8. Night of Fire

I have nothing to say to that other than THEY’RE 14 YOU PERVERTS. Also, silly me for thinking that this “fat pro wrestler dancing with prepubescent asian girls” thing was a one hit wonder. They did it again, and this time he’s wearing a Donald Duck outfit.

7. Everyone Else Has Had More Sex Than Me

It’s my Theme Song!

6. Bang Bang Bang

Here we have a new video we discovered on the internet from local artists from the midwest area out of St. Louis,Missouri. Buddy Luv and Nova Nocout. Buddy Luv’s witty wordplay blends in perfectly with Nova’s demanding voice and strong delivery. Listen as they rap over the “Run This Town” instrumental track.

Nuthing But A G Thang, The Next Episode & Still D.R.E. avec Dr Dre

Double Up, avec R Kelly

Buttons, avec les Pussycat Dolls

I Wanna Love You, avec Akon

D’autres artistes ont également collaboré avec Snoop Dogg: 2Pac, Nate Dogg, Warren G, Puff Daddy, Will Smith, Mariah Carey, Bow Wow, The Game, Xzibit, Kelly Rowland, The Game, …

“Straight Outta Lo Cash, a crazy muthafuck named Gusto!”

Despite the comedic value of this flick, the morals conveyed remain relevant considering fools like Rick Ross and Akon are still trying to portray fake criminal pasts. Who would have thought that a movie about fakeass gangster rappers would shape the face of hip-hop for the next decade and a half? Additionally, the more experience I get in the music industry, the more I realize just how on point this movie is. Ego, greed, and lust almost always tend to be the downfall of great artists.

West coast producer and g-funk pioneer Dr. Dre has broken his silence and commented on his almost mythical album in the making “Detox“. However, the news is probably not what most wanted to hear. The record (which was supposed to be sandwiched between Eminem and 50 Cent releases this year) has been delayed until next year and remains unfinished. This is due to a lack of “motivation”.

Speaking to ABC news Dr. Dre commented:

“Hopefully, I’ll get it done at the end of this year, and we can hear it next year”

Are you looking forward to Dr. Dre’s Detox record?

You can’t be too redundant these days I suppose. I guess having stuff misspelled on your car is cool too. I made a very weak attempt at a google search for “stickey” and didn’t come up with much. I figure it’s either about drugs or cars. I should probably start listening to more hip hop. Are they still calling it hip hop? Rap? Hip pop? Maybe I’ll just read all the lyrics to every gangsta rap song ever and yell them loudly out on the streets of NY. Well…goodnight.

(Flesh, Krazy,Wish, Bizzy, & Lazy Bone)

“First Of The Month” was one of the many classic records that my Ex-Favorite group Bone Thugs In Harmony made. Before I get into why I ultimately pretty much disowned them, I want to commemorate the amazing run and great times I had listening them.

In The Beginning: New York created Hip-Hop, then the Midwest made it faster. In the mid 90’s a new sound emerged from Chicago and Cleveland around the same time ultimately leading to a fued between Bone and Chicago rappers like Twista, Do or Die, Psycho Drama and Tripple Darkness (what you know about them youngin?). The fast paced, rapid tongue, speedy but melodic music of Bone Thugs In Harmony captivated the ears of millions. They were from Cleveland Ohio, nobody ever even knew rap existed there. They were signed by legendary NWA front man Eazy-E,and they were still under 21. Around their rise to fame they added Member “Flesh N’ Bone” who was later arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and sentenced to 11 years back in 2000.

Their Style: Everything about this group was unique which was a big part of the reason they caught the attention of the Hip- Hop world in a hurry. Even their title “Bone Thugs In Harmony” was controversial, seeing how the words “Thug” and “Harmony” (implying singing???) by a rap group was unheard of until this point. Each member had his own unique style that seemed to compliment each other (except Wish Bone, everybody hated his verses, cuz he rapped the slowest lol). They also had a unique quality of making “Hardcore Rap” sound smooth and soothing. Not too many groups could make a psychopathic serial killing song called “Mr. Ouija” (like we-jee board, I didn’t know thats how you spell it either), and have smooth strings and a soft baseline with a harmonized chorus and have you singing along about killing people without noticing.

Their Music: Their first two albums “Creepin On Ah Come Up” and “Eternal 1999″showed the creativity, diversity, and the limitless potential of the group. Tracks like “Mr. Bill Collector”, “Thuggish Ruggish Bone”, “Bud Smokers Only” and “No Surrender” were both aggressive and chill. They were both mainstream and underground, and both unique and new. Every kid I knew in grade school would compete to who could recite the most Bone lyrics, and who could rap along to their songs without messing up. Nothing and no one could be compared to them (except Twista) and they created a lane that didn’t even exist before their time.

Their Success: A heavy contributor to Bone’s success was their ability to effortlessly collaborate with big name artist. “For the Love of $” fet. Eazy-E was able to link old school gangsta rap to the next generation. Later tracks like “Notorious Thugs” fet. Notorious Big and “Thug Love”fet Tupac solidified them as rap giants with certified classic songs. Still their biggest success was probably the Grammy nominated single “Tha Crossroads” off the Eternal 1999 album that sky rocketed to #1 on the Billboard charts and ultimately led to the album going 6 times platinum (Wish actually had the most memorable verse on this song, go figure). The video for Crossroads was classic and the performances were just as good. But it marked a turn in their career for a more spiritual, conscious message as opposed to the dark and mystic style we all loved them for.

The Downfall: After the success of “Tha Crossroads” I believe the group had its own crossroads. I believe at some point in a smoked out tour bus their manger and VP of the label came in and was like “soooo you know yall gonna have to change yall image now right?”. That’s the only logical explanation I have for such a dynamic fall off. Now unlike most artist who peak they didn’t all of a sudden get incredibly whack out of nowhere. They maintained a glimmer of hope here and there with a classic song. But those songs came more far a few in between as tension built and Bizzy Bone ultimately went solo (and got weirder than Andre 3,000 after Erykha Badu). The next couple years the group went on to release several albums that got worse and worse with promotional issues, subject matter, and an undecided half serial killer half peace maker themes. This time period was also when the group colaborated with their sub-group Mo’ Thugs and created one of the worse rap songs that I have ever heard “Ghetto Cowboy”

Looking Forward: Now that Flesh has been released and Bizzy has returned to reunite with the group it is possible that they can still make it to the rap hall of fame. The “ Strenght and Loyalty” album in 2007 was the group’s first project in over 5 years and wasn’t the Old Bone by a long shot but it was respectable. This group has shown us the importance of originality and creativity but has also been an example of “When Getting Famous Goes Wrong”. I hope that if they ever do make another project that it shows the true talent they really have. Krazy Bone has gone on to kill several guest appearances of the last couple years, most noticeably “Spit Your Game” on the Biggie Duets album which stamped the end to the feud between Bone and Chicago artist since the track also featured Twista. Maybe just maybe they can do it again one day *sigh* :-\ .

As I started with on Thursday night, I tonight continue my discussion on the failure of Americans to use reason and values in their decisions regarding the federal government, or for that matter the state governments, local governments, and every other “looked up to” person in the public eye. I do want to note up front that Just A Citizen was correct in his nit-picking of my statement the other day. I tend to say “no values” when what I mean that their values are not in line with freedom or liberty. So let me say up front that when I say no values, I mean that their values are inconsistent with liberty, that their values are inconsistent with mine, and, in my opinion, their values are inconsistent with morality. Defining morality is difficult, so perhaps some of our discussion today will be around that, but I think that those who are trying to really understand what I am saying know what I mean when I say it.

So in the first part of this two-part series, I was focusing on describing what we see in American politics and how I cannot understand why we allow it to happen the way that it does. Today, I will instead focus on the values side of things. I want to candidly discuss the reality of today’s America. Because the reality of today’s America is really disturbing. I will attempt to refrain from lumping this as one group or another. Should I fail to do so, feel free to call it out and I will clarify my position so that it remains clear to everyone.

Through the conversations the last few days, I have heard from both sides of the political spectrum in today’s political landscape. I have also heard from varying views on the morality of America. From Greatergoodcs, who believe that people are not good by nature and therefore must have maximum government control in order to be forced to do good, to several others that believe America is filled with good people and the few bad apples are who make it seem worse than it is for the rest. I suggest that the argument is not over the percentage of Americans that are good versus the percentage that are bad. Good and bad are too subjective to make such a statement. Where I feel we fall apart is in the level of morality and ethics displayed by everyday people.

Let me explain what I mean in today’s society. Take a look at our cultural stars. They are the worst human beings on the planet, ranking right up there with today’s politicians. Reality TV is a hit in America. People tune in and worship those who are the most outrageous, most disrespectful, least moral. Some current examples would be the “Real Housewives” series, My Sweet Sixteen, and Everyone Loves New York. Our young idolize trash like Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, and Lindsey Lohan. First rate whores no matter how you cut it. They sleep around constantly, go out showing off their genitals in public, and make a mess of their lives. And for this they are worshiped. These girls, while underage, get trashed at the swankiest clubs and bars in America. And no one bats an eye. Why are these establishments not immediately raided and closed down? They are caught red-handed over and over with underage stars leaving blitzed. The stars get worshiped and the moral and legal issues are never faced.

Kanye West really is a jackass. This is the second time he has pulled this stunt of upstaging a winner he didn’t agree with. He is an arrogant asshole and a pathetic excuse for a human being. The list of “rap stars” who sing about criminal behavior, female abuse, and glorified violence is ungodly. Yet not one of them is held accountable. They are glorified, and their albums sell millions. They are heroes. Everyone rushes to make excuses for them and then tell us that their behavior is to be overlooked because “they are just so talented”. They are morally bankrupt and their being placed on a pedestal as a role model for today’s youth is to be overlooked because they are really good at writing songs that preach hate and violence? Reverend Wright was really good at sermons too, so should we simply excuse the “God Damn America” message as well? We protect gangsta rap as first amendment rights while punishing Humana for sending out an honest statement to their clients.

And then there are our politicians. These take the cake, don’t they? Let’s take a look at the behavior of the United States Congress over the last decade. Here is a list from multiple sources that I looked up. All had charges brought against them, ethics committe violations against them, sex charges against them, or some other form of scandal that proved them to be corrupt:

Heck I am just going to stop right there. We all know that I can continue to research this all night long and continue to list Congressional members all night long. And I will guarantee that there are many that I missed. You get the point. The United States Congress is perhaps the biggest gathering of criminals, frauds, liars, cheats, sexual predators, rapists, and overall morally bankrupt people in the United States outside of perhaps a federal prison.

And that is just Congress. We had a President sleeping with an intern, as many cases of cabinet members doing bad as there are cases of congress doing so, and no shortage of staffers and lobbyists who joined the ranks of criminally convicted in Washington DC. We have a Secretary of the Treasury who didn’t pay his taxes, yet is head of the IRS. We have a Secretary of State that had the Whitewater scandal and the White House Travel Office Scandal. We had the “Lion of the Senate” who drove into a river drunk and left a woman to die. We have a member of Congress that was sleeping with teenage male interns.

And these are just the “legal” issues that we see from our federally elected representation. In reality we watch them parade out and twist the truth, omit facts, cover up, and outright lie to us on a daily basis. We KNOW they are liars and con-men. There is not a person on this site who trusts politicians to tell the truth, work for their constituents, and vote their true conscience.

Simply said we have the most corrupt people in America running our country.

And this is ACCEPTED! These idiots and liars are re-elected over and over. We watch the media and the pundits and the talk show hosts and even our friends and families, make excuse after excuse to dismiss this outright morally bankrupt behavior. James Garfield is a very forgettable President, but how do you like this quote from him:

Now more than ever before, the people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness and corruption. If it be intelligent, brave and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities to represent them in the national legislature…. If the next centennial does not find us a great nation … it will be because those who represent the enterprise, the culture, and the morality of the nation do not aid in controlling the political forces. James Garfield, 1877

How is it even possible that our elected representatives could possibly be as horribly valued and principled as they are? I believe that the answer is that the American public has both lost its way in terms of values and principles, and that they are provided with the ability to do nothing, therefore allowing criminals to remain serving. When Timothy Geithner was shown to have not paid taxes before being confirmed to Secretary of the Treasury, half of America didn’t bat an eye. And they argued in his defense. They argued in his defense.

The problem dear readers is that we have failed to demand better from those who serve us. We have accepted the moral bankruptcy of our federal government officials as “par for the course”. A value and principle based country should have removed every single one of the people mentioned above from public “service” immediately. But they don’t, because their values and principles are not there to guide them. We have not demanded better from them and we have not demanded better from ourselves and each other. And the time has come that this must change, or we will watch our country fall into the depths of forgotten empires and we will watch morality and values become things that are written about as ancient history stories about mythical men of principle.

People today do not even know how to treat one another with respect and dignity. I work with the public every single day. Oh, the sheer number of people who deem it acceptable to treat me and my staff like we are trash is staggering. We have become so politically correct (one of the great downfalls of our society lies in this very tactic) that when someone acts outside of the lines of values and principles, we are not even free to point it out any longer. Allow me to stand up for my dignity with even one overly rude consumer and my corporate office will have my head on a pike.

Yet people are allowed to throw around a claim such as “she is racist” with absolutely no consequences what-so-ever. The Speaker of the House of Representatives stooped to the level of the idiots that had Hitler signs and no one even batted an eye for that. She is the Speaker of the House, and this type of behavior was accepted by half the population of the United States because she is on “their side”. Congress is allowed to limit success, or punish it, in order to “level the playing field”. People have accepted the idea that the appropriate price for having a cap on failure is to have a cap on success. And the American public agrees to a statement like that as though it has merit. They agree to it even though they know in their heart it is wrong.

Our society has become a walking contradiction. Let me first pick on those who feel that socialism or communism is the “better path forward.” You feel as though it is a “good” thing to provide for those unable to provide for themselves. That is a moral position to take. However, you think it is acceptable to take from someone else by force in order to give it to that person. I have to ask, do you not see the contradiction in taking that position? You are using your definitions to impose on those around you. Forget about the whole belief that I have that socialism or communism is physically unsustainable. Focus only on the two choices you make. It is good to help someone in need. It is good to take something that I earned from me. Don’t you see that as contradictory?

Let me next go to the far right in America. You feel as though it is good for Christians to be afforded the opportunity to live their lives as they see fit. That is a moral position to take. However, you see it as acceptable to deny those who don’t believe what you believe the same right to live their lives as they see fit. Forget that your own God forbids you to stand in judgement of other men. Focus just on the two choices you make. It is good to allow group A to live as they see fit according to their beliefs. It is good to deny group B the ability to live as they see fit according to their beliefs. Don’t you see that as contradictory?

You see, both sides of this issue have allowed others to use emotion and false logic to sway them away from logic and reason. A thousand years of history tells you that socialism and communism collapse on themselves. And you know in your heart that taking from one person to give to another is wrong, you know it in your heart regardless of the outward justifications you attempt to provide. Your own bible tells you that you cannot stand in judgement of others. And you know in your heart that denying others the right to live their life according to their beliefs just as you are afforded the opportunity to do is wrong. You know it in your heart (and read it in your book) no matter how much you try to tell us that you are following the word of God.

There is no shortage of opportunity in this country. There is a massive shortage of self discipline and personal drive. There is no shortage of ability or innovation in this country. There is a shortage of willpower and desire to be better. There is no shortage of money in this country. There is a massive shortage fiscal discipline and adherence to the laws of economics. There is no shortage of values and principles in this country. There is a massive shortage of the willpower to make those values the priority that trumps greed and apathy. There is no shortage of “wrong” in this country. There is a massive and overwhelming shortage of people willing to admit it is wrong even when it makes the task harder and people willing to renounce it as wrong and demand better from those responsible. And in the world of political discourse, there is no shortage of blame in this country, but there is a massive shortage in personal responsibility and demanding a fix rather than a blame war.

We have allowed our politicians to lose their mind. We have watched those around us accept the lies. Washington has somehow determined that the laws of economics don’t apply to their actions. Washington has somehow determined that the laws of human behavior don’t apply to their plans. They have somehow determined that someone’s “need” is more important than another’s “effort”. They have determined that such a thing as a “greater good” exists at a national level (and now a global one) and that something that won’t work in your own household will work on such a grand scale. Some examples:

The federal government has amassed $11 Trillion in debt, while telling us that having debt is “not such a bad thing” and even “necessary”. We are paying the interest only, which currently stands at roughly $28 Billion per month. That is $300 Billion a year. According to the Congressional Budget Office, by 2019 as our debt interest rates increase, that figure will be $809 Billion a year. And that is just interest. Want universal health coverage? How about scrapping this farce of a plan we see and waiting ten years. Pay off the national debt, and for $800 billion a year you can buy them all Blue Cross policies.

The government has created such an entitlement society that in just four generations, we have gone from grandparents who had a 1400 square foot house for 6 children to children that have a 3000 square foot house for two cats. Our grandparents knew debt was bad and thus borrowed only for a mortgage and car. Now society deems it necessary to have no interest financing for purchases $299 and up. We live in debt and our version of “poor” means having to choose between XBox and Playstation instead having both. When your poorest 1/3 of America still owns gaming stations, DVD players, Flat TV’s, cell phones, a collection of $150 jerseys and $200 sneakers, and cars…. You have reached the point of madness when you claim that they are somehow in a position of poverty through no fault of their own, and it is up time to rectify that situation with my hard earned money.

America has come to accept that what a candidate says during a campaign is not at all what he will do once elected. This President promised openness and bipartisanship. He promised to fight to win Afghanistan. He promised a change in the way things were done in Washington. Instead we got an intensification of the politics as usual, as bitter a partisan divide as I have ever seen, and closed door meetings in Congress and bills passed as quickly as possible. We have gotten more misdirection than ever, getting America to focus over here while the politicians do something different over there. Patrick Henry once said, “The liberties of a people never were, nor ever will be, secure, when the transactions of their rulers may be concealed from them.” And this government is as concealing as any on earth. And the people for some reason accept this.

Ray posed an interesting thought the other night. He has obviously been disgusted with the protests and town halls. And he mentioned that these folks don’t understand the realities of the things they are protesting. He asked the question, “what is at the root of their dissatisfaction?” From his commentary I imagine that what he meant was that the root of the dissatisfaction is ignorance or mis-information. And while there is plenty of that out there, I don’t think that this is the root of the dissatisfaction that we see.

I believe that America has a gut feeling that they are getting screwed. I believe that somewhere inside they can feel that the representation in Washington DC is devoid of reason, devoid of logic, and most importantly, devoid of morals, values, and principles. And they aren’t comfortable with it. And the more of it they see (because each session of Congress over the last 20 years has exposed more of it) the more they realize that Washington DC it out of step with America, and further has no interest in actually serving the people of the United States. And that frustrates them because they don’t know what they can do about it. They see an America that has lost her way. An America that has values out of step with morality. And it hurts them, and angers them. They don’t have the solution, but they are quickly realizing that the things coming out of the Democrat and Republican parties are definitely NOT the solution. So they are beginning to stir.

Better yet, Make this commitment

I don’t have the answers, that is for sure. But I can tell you one thing that you can do right now that will begin down the path of setting things right. Stop the madness. Put VALUES back at the top of the priority list. We are not in a position where “something must be done”. With every action being proposed, stop and ask yourself whether IT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO. Yes, it is horrible that some Americans don’t have health care options. But is taking over the health care industry the right thing to do? Is further increasing the tax burden on the wealthy who already pay 90% of the income taxes in America the right thing to do? If you want to find solutions to today’s problems, don’t start halfway down the road, start at the beginning. Let your values be the first litmus test for any proposal. Yes it will eliminate a lot of options. But every one of you, on the left and the right, know that options that don’t pass the value test are not only immoral, they are destined to fail.

Apply this test to your candidates as well. The first test of a candidate should not be their positions. It should be their values and the principles that they have shown in the past. There are no candidates for national office that have no past. Look at that past. If you find anything questionable, scratch their name off the list of acceptable choices. In a country of 300 Million people, you cannot tell me that there are not 545 people who can pass the test of having solid values and principles. The first step in changing Washington is to commit to the idea that you will never again condone the actions of dishonest men. We have allowed Washington to become a cesspool of absolute garbage. We must commit to no longer tolerating what Washington is. A zero tolerance policy is the only answer.

Money and back room deals cannot overcome 300 Million Americans who have finally decided that values matter far more than political affiliation or partisan position. I know it is hard to conceive on the concept of ignoring the “issues”, but trust this one thought: A person of true principle, with true values and a calibrated moral compass is not going to make immoral decisions on any issue. Because for that person, party position means absolutely nothing when put against their values. There is nothing to fear from a man who truly has moral character and who will stand by his principles.

Statesmen, my dear Sir, may plan and speculate for Liberty, but it is Religion and Morality alone, which can establish the Principles upon which Freedom can securely stand….The only foundation of a free Constitution, is pure Virtue, and if this cannot be inspired into our People, in a great Measure, than they have it now, They may change their Rulers, and the forms of Government, but they will not obtain a lasting Liberty.
John Adams

Those on the left today have made a serious error in judgement about the movement afoot in America. They are jumping to the conclusion that since the opposition is happening during a completely Democrat controlled period, that the protests and opposition is with a doubt a conservative movement. They are dead wrong. Oh, the Republicans and conservative right is attempting to seize the movement and claim that it is a new feeling in America that supports their cause. They are dead wrong too. What we are seeing as opposition to today’s government wrangling is not a conservative movement or a liberal movement. It is not a Democrat movement or a Republican movement. No folks, the movement afoot today is a movement against big government. It is a movement against the immorality and indecency in Washington. Change is coming to Washington DC. But it isn’t Obama that it is bringing it. He just gassed up their train.

It is an American movement.

And it is about damn time.

by Jayson One of the most rad things about both growing up in the woods then moving back to live the

by Jayson

One of the most rad things about both growing up in the woods then moving back to live there is I never ever have any idea what is going on. This was actually somewhat true when I lived in Cleveland and went to hell of shows. I probably had no idea what was going on then, but now the combination of isolation and blogging makes it a lot more interesting. For a couple years I existed in a real vacuum, living only on Pandora and whatever Hydra Head was putting out, now I’m reading a lot more.

I’m suffering from the early onset midlife crisis myself. I’m now old enough to have seen several scenes come and go and the music I listened to as a teen has it’s own ‘classic’ station on XM. So here is a list of the notable bands, scenes, whatever musically that I failed to get either by not listening to the right things or listening to the wrong ones, due to age, general stupidity or both. Based on what the internet has taught me and in no specific order:

Radiohead: I know basically no one cares about Radiohead in 2009, but remember when they were geniuses? I never got that. Sad, whiny, English music played over some ambient, that’s genius? Ok…

Wilco: Likewise, 2009, no one cares. But still, remember when these guys were geniuses? All you have to do is abandon being an alt country band and play some gutless rock n’ roll with a few samples here and there? This shows that no matter how much birth control is out there, you’ll always have a few people that take Rolling Stone seriously in every generation. Jeff Tweedy sucks compared to Jay Farrar anyway.

Mastodon: I love Mastodon. What you have to realize about me, is that in my heart I’m a lightweight. I spent my youth listening to Grunge or Alternative or whatever we were calling it. Alice in Chains were the heaviest thing I owned for a really long time. Mastodon pretty much suits my general ‘not up for much’ tastes.

Grindcore: Again this happened while I was asleep. I didn’t really listen to metal until 1999. I’m 32 and just getting into grindcore.

Gangsta rap: When I was 17 or whenever this got big I hated it all. On one hand I give myself a break because I was going to school with kids who lived on farms and were pretending to be in the Bloods. (objectively hilarious, subjectively a joke that gets old fast) On the other I took myself way too seriously. Of course now basically I think all this southern bounce and what have you sounds terrible compared to what was big 15 or more years ago. Ice Cube was better when he hated white people though, that’s just being factual. Listen to The Predator and Laugh Now, Cry Later back to back.

AC/DC, Thin Lizzy, Zeppelin, et all: Thank you very much Kurt Cobain, you drug addled idiot. I was Nirvana super fan #1 in the day and while I won’t say anything about the music I have to come realize that I had effectively played myself by listening to Kurt’s opinions on music. (and a lot of other stuff really, every Nirvana album came with a No Fun Club enrollment form) Sure, the Pixies and the Melvins are pretty good, but the whole “corporate rock, cock rock, whatever” line was in fact, complete bullshit. Really to be fair, I can blame pretty much everyone who made independent music in the 80s except the Ramones and the Butthole Surfers. Ian MacKaye basically ruined music and fun and people like Kathleen Hannah and Kurt just perpetuated the nonsense.

Post-Metal: I love every boring post-metal band. All the time I don’t spend on Hydra Head’s website I spend listening to Isis and many bands that sound just like them. All the time I don’t spend on either of those two things, I spend shaping my beard.

Thrash revival: I’m giving everyone a pass on this. Thrash, to my ears, is way less shitty and awful than anything the kids have been into for like… a decade. While it’s touch disconcerting to see kids half my age dressing the way kids did when I was in jr. high, I can’t be moved to hate it at all. I mean, we could always go back to listening to songs written by people who think Korn invented music in 1995. I know everyone hates this because it makes them feel old, but what doesn’t these days? The singer from Warbringer told me you could get white high tops “on the internet” if you Google for “thrash metal high tops.”

3 Inches of Blood: This is one of my favorite bands. I listen to them almost non stop. This is, again, partially a reaction to nearly a decade of being unable to escape music written by stangry bros about their feelings and being misunderstood. The other part is because I am a huge dork and really enjoy music about warriors and monsters and crap like that.

There’s more, but I forgot the rest of it.

David Segal has an interesting breakdown in yesterday’s New York Times comparing right-wing ta

David Segal has an interesting breakdown in yesterday’s New York Times comparing right-wing talk show hosts to rappers, especially gangsta rappers. He admits that both groups would probably not be happy to be compared to the other, and I agree, but I still think he has a point.

Segal argues that four key things are necessary for success in both fields: an enormous ego that you’re not shy about discussing; haters; feuds with others in your field; and verbal skills, especially an ability for improvisation and free-association. This is true, but not the most profound analysis–yet.

Segal then describes how rap can be among the most politically conservative of genres: that it “exalts capitalism and entrepreneurship with a brio that is typically considered Republican.” And so do Rush, Glenn Beck, et al.

Rap loves the Second Amendment; right-wing talk radio fans are probably the kind of people who made gun sales spike right after the 2008 elections.

Both rap and talk radio regularly assert that criminals cannot be reformed–but “gangsta rappers often identify themselves as the criminals, and are proud of their unreformability.”

And

Finally, rappers and conservative talkers both speak for a demographic that believes its interests and problems have been slighted and both offer stories that have allegedly been ignored.

Obviously, there are limits to all these parallels, but there is one more worth noting: rap has inspired its share of fear and now, liberals and moderates are asking the same question about conservative talk radio that conservatives have long asked about rap: How dangerous is it?

Interestingly (with respect to the first paragraph of the quote) rap was often referred to as “black TV” in its early days for its timeliness and opinionated, sometimes paranoid take on current events. Anyway, I will admit that I am much more scared of Glenn Beck’s followers than those who listen to Ludacris (notwithstanding the fact that I’m in the latter category), but perhaps that’s just the socialist-health-care-loving left-winger in me talking.

Anyway, I think that overall Segal’s right on here. I would have been interested in a little more gender analysis, though. It is well-documented that gangsta rap is (at least partially) about working out a very specific kind of masculinity in the face of oppression or perceived oppression–a tough, heterosexual, homophobic, muscular, violent, self-sufficient masculinity.

This has not been as studied in the case of right-wing talk radio, but anecdotally, it seems to serve the same purpose for angry white men. In fact, Rush Limbaugh is well-known for tasteless rape jokes, Glenn Beck has made misogynistic remarks about women’s looks and a host of other things, and Michael Savage has stated that “any heterosexual woman today over the age of 25 who grew up in America is basically a dominatrix. You ask any heterosexual guy” as well as making some nasty transphobic comments. (Note, I find it interesting that Ann Coulter, who doesn’t have a talk show but who is a public figure who says a lot of similar things, is often characterized as “mannish.” Perhaps we are picking up on this gender work going on in right-wing media, albeit in a sexist way.)

And this doesn’t take into account the xenophobia, pro-gun and pro-war positions, and other macho and bigoted things that come out of these guys’ mouths. They are constructing a notion of white American masculinity that is even more unappealing than gangsta rap’s portrait of black American masculinity. Men can do better!
