lately ive been having dreams about house parties, birthdays and mansions, breaking into people’s empty apartments and dancing in our socks…
also been biting my lip in the same place over and over again…maybe my teeth are moving around? not paying attention while im eating??
………………………
anyway…forever favorites JEFF were here in richmond this past weekend on tour with Shonen Knife! hurrah!
they played my new favorite richmond venue the Plaza Bowl, duck pins! ten dollar pitchers! lazer lights! fried snacks!
its a good time.
through various means of facebook perusing/stalking/snooping, i discovered an illustration by an artist new to me…Justin Wallis.
the above image is currently my desktop background, and Justin is currently my imaginary boyfriend.
did you guys notice the ganguro up in the top left corner?

anyway, Justin, or MILKBBI is a cutie who makes marker illustrations with sticker embellishments. he often works with multiples and always with good fashion sense.
………………………
more art stuff: just saw Kimsooja on art 21, and i keep thinking about her piece “Respirar – Una Mujer Espejo / To Breathe – A Mirror Woman”…Kimsooja worked within the Palacio de Cristal of Madrid to create a space of sanctuary. the artist laid mirror on the floor and translucent diffraction film on the windows and a recording of her own breathing played throughout the building.
here is her artists statement …
and here is an animation of the space with sound…
pretty awe-some. i need diffraction film for my windows…
incidentally, meditative is one of my favorite words to say, when you say it me-DIT-ta-tive

Vampire Girl vs Frankenstein Girl

Vampire Girl by Yukie Kawamura

Frankenstein Girl by Elly Otoguro

I have mixed feelings about the whole Kogal/Ganguro/Yamamba/Gyaru trend. I don’t really like hip-hop, but hip-hop mixed with hot asian girls is a bit more interesting. These scans are from the Gyaru bible: Egg magazine, via this site.

Now here is an opportunity to create my own website that profiles youth culture. I would document how contemporary media such as facebook and youtube have allowed for the globalisation of different cultures. I would also include my own created graphics such as animation, character design and also my own photography. Today’s blog will be short but memorable. I have attached a picture of two non-westerners from America trying to be a Ganguro. Here is the evident spread of the culture. I have also attached humours links of the spread of the culture.

GANGURO IN THE WEST

The girl is of European background and she is teaching people how to look like a Ganguro. I am pretty sure even the Ganguro watch this video for inspiration on their next make up design. What I found was sort of a merge between what we would call an ‘Emo’ in Australia and a Ganguro in Japan. Here is the link

UK teens obsessed with Japanese trend (MUST SEE)!!

Here is another must see video, of how Ganguro style is taking over the Uk. If I had my own magazine, WEST imitation of the Ganguro would always be in the front cover.

The Formation and History of Ganguro

Ganguro literally means “black-faced” (Miller 2006, pg.30) as I mentioned on my earlier blog. “Ganguro falls into the larger subculture of gyaru (from English “gal”), a slang term used for various groups of young women, usually referring to overly childish or rebellious girls” ( Grey 2009). The culture supposedly peaked in popularity during the late 1990s to the early 2000s (Japanese Lifestyle 2009). It is easy to spot a Ganguro girl in Japan because of their dark tanned faces, covered with stickers, glitters, white eye shadow, false eyelashes, bleached hair, provocative and colorful clothing and high heeled shoes.

Ganguro Gal” look are cell phones covered with purikura stickers, tie-dyed sarongs, mini-skirts, hibiscus flower hairpins, and lots of bracelets, rings and necklaces.

For example:

Here are important information that I dug up from different websites that agree and disagree about the formation of the Ganguro.

“Ganguro, with their screw-you makeup, are not trying to look black, American, or like anything ever seen before” ( Miller 2006, pg.30).

Ganguro go against the grain of the usual Japanese standard of female beauty, which calls for skin as light as possible, so-called bihaku, (??, literally ‘beautiful whiteness’). The roots of the trend are said to be in the mid-1960s, starting with commercials/advertisements in which actresses emulated the California “beach bunny” look.

Ganguro have also been linked to an emulation of African American celebrities and were described as such by the Editor of Fruits magazine. The term itself, “Black face”, seems to allude to that.

Hip hop impact on Japanese youth culture with special reference to the ganguro.

Ganguro as a new fashion style reflects the global influence of hip hop culture and affects Japanese youth ideology.

Ganguro is more than a new fashion style among Japanese teenage girls; it is an explicit expression of self- identity of those who attempt to depart from traditional Japanese cultural values and social standards.

Ganguro as a subculture is in conflict with mainstream Japanese culture, and although this subculture may not spread to the whole Japanese younger generation, it has socio-cultural and ideological significance in Japanese society.

Someone today asked me, why are you so interested in the Ganguro culture? and I paused for a bit and answered. “ Because sometimes I wish I could be as free as them!”. Sometimes I just want to rebel. When I turned 18, four years ago, I taught that my parents could give me the freedom that I deserved. But I guess my expectations were only fueled by watching movies like ‘A walk to remember’, and all the other Filipino movies I watched; that showed me that when you stand up to your parents they will learn to accept that at that age a person is mature and independent. But being a Filipina girl and the eldest girl in the family, the eldest daughter, the elders grandchild, I was not entitled to that freedom. This is how my fascination with the Ganguro girls began. Through contemporary media vehichle such as the internet and blogs, i found out about Ganguros!

The Ganguro girls were not only a product television show such as Baywatch and African American music videos, they are to me a product of rebellion, a way to escape the strict and high expectations of being a Japanese girl. Personally, it is to break away from the strict and outdated expectations of many Asian culture and parents.

In a book written by Paul R. Spickard titled ‘Mixed blood: intermarriage and ethnic identity in twentieth-century America’ he informs the reader of why ‘white skin’ was seen as an imperative characteristic of a high-class Japanese girl.

He stated “the Japanese from very early times liked white skin, which they associated with spiritual refinement and upper class status, and disliked black skin, which they saw as a sign of primitiveness. (Spikard 1991 pg.43)

“ A woman out to have “ a small and well-shaped face, white skin, gentle manner, an innocent, charming and attentive character” (Spikard 1991 pg.43)

Here is a similar comment that a blogger made from the website ‘Ming the Mechanic:Ganguro Girls The NewsLog of Flemming Funch’ on

11 Apr 2006 @ 21:41 by Jessa @71.1.179.184 : Ganguro

“I read an article in a book years ago that said that Ganguro girls paint their faces black or use really dark shades of tanning lotion to challenge the traditional Japanese culture of girls having skin white face.Actually, I read an article about these girls in the Anime Insider magazine. It said that one of the goals for Ganguro (or Manba, or whatever) is to not only capture the California beach girl look, but to also rebel against the ideal Japanese beauty (moonlight-pale skin, long, ebony-black hair, etc.). “

Like the Japanese culture, my parents to this day are very strict on me, jsut because I am a girl. My parents too didn’t like me being outside and getting my skin dark. I was encouraged by parents to use whitening lotion and whitening soap. I feel a strong connection to the Ganguro girls, because I believe that I too am living as a prisoner of my culture. But you would never catch me dressing up and wearing my make up like them!

This blog is dedicated to the sub culture ‘Ganguro’ of Japan. Ganguro translates as “black faced”.

AREA OF INTEREST: The impacts of limited information on Graphic Designers and Magazine Journalist, this is why I have chosen to do the Ganguro culture as a prime example of the challenges for people to find adequate amount of information on the subject on the internet. However, it does create opportunities for people like me who aspire to be a Graphic Designer to have the ability to create an intersting and new approach to getting information about the Ganguros.

The aim of this blog is to investigate the following:

The impact of contemporary media such as ‘Egg’ magazine of Japan, Facebook and Youtube.

How contemporary media has brought the culture to the West.

The challenges of insufficient information regarding the Ganguro’s for people who are interested in the group.

I have to say, the fashion sense of the Japanese never fails to impress me. For a society that is generally considered conservative, it can have some of the most outrages fashions that the western world has yet to see. One of these such fashion trends is known as Ganguro (translations to “Black Faced Girls”). This style popular with young females and even though it reached it peek in 2000, it can still be found in places such as Shibuya and Ikebukuro districts of Tokyo which is considered the center of Gangouro and other popular Japanese Fashion.

Ganguro fashion is comprised of a deep tanned skin with hair varying from bleach blond to orange and other bright colors. It also includes wearing of white eyeshadow and lipstick applied thickly with black eyeliner to accent the eyes. Some Ganguro sub-styles also include ‘cutesy” stickers on cheeks and around the eyes. As for clothes, anything brightly colored will work and is usually complemented by leis, fake flowers, ie-dyed sarongs, and a great deal of necklaces, bracelets and rings.

Yamanba and Manba
There is also a sub-category of the Ganguro fashion known as Yamanba and Manba. These are extreme versions of Ganguro fashion which featured darker tans, brightly colored contacts, face jewels and until 2004, a great deal of stickers was also worn. Manba which died out with the face-stickers came back in 2008 with a vengeance along with Yamanba becoming much more outrageous and synthetic with more brightly colored hair. Yamanba and Manba are also not to be confused with each other. While Yamanba has the white shadow above the eyes only, Manba has it both above and below it.

Don’t think that Yamanba and Manba style are just for woman. There is also a Male’s version of this style called Center Guy which get’s its name from Shibuya’s Center Street which is where this fashion can be easily found.

Ganguro In The West
Many Western young woman have tried to copy the Ganguro style. However, due to the lack of up-to-date information available in English as well as the difference in Western and Eastern Eye Shapes, Ganguro makeup style can turn out looking awkward and strange. Because it is mostly worn at Anime Conventions, it can sometimes also be considered a bad cosplay attempted if not done properly. Ganguro style should not be mistaken for Cosplay. They are two completely different styles.

Additional Images
Here are some additional images which so the crazy style of Ganguro. Remember to stay tune for other Japanese Fashion Press posts!

Oioioioioi!

Como vão meus fuckers lovers? *-*

Se você pensou: “WHAT HELL?”

Enton somos dois =$

Enfim.

Muitas pessoas devem gostar

Since you viewers seemed to like my two posts about different lolita styles , I decided to write about the other Harajuku styles among lolita. Our first one is :

Harajuku

Harajuku can look fun , bright , and kawaii if you can pull it off. To achieve the look , you should wear different layers of bright , and a little bit of dark clothing. ( Though some people think that you just throw layers and layers of clothes on . Which is totally a D’ONT . )

Ganguro and Yamamba

Ganguros and Yamambas have dark tans , wear bright eye catching clothes , Doll contacts , and are usually seen shopping in the Harajuku District.

Decora

Decora is just like what it sounds! Decoras decorates themselves anything that is cute and adorable! Decora also takes some elements from harajuku , like the layering , though it is more focused on cute and childish elements.

Cosplay

Even though coplay isn’t really a style , Alot of teens cosplay as their favourite J-rockers on the Harajuku Bridge.

Harajuku Punk and Visual-Kei

Even though harajuku punk and visual-kei are somewhat different , I decided to put them togheter because they are both hard looks to pull off, ( especially visual-kei ) and they are both part of the harajuku styles.

I hope you enjoyed this little post! Oh, and one more thing:

HOW CUTE IS THIS!?!!!

This video is a very funny video of someone legitimately trying to give a tutorial on the Japanese fashion style of Ganguro. For those of you who don’t know what Ganguro is, it is a style characterized by almost cave-man like features with deeply tanned skin, raggedy hair and tons of make-up that makes the wearer look like a clown.

I was researching dred locks for the book I’m working on and I came across some hairdressers

I was researching dred locks for the book I’m working on and I came across some hairdressers trying to mimic Gyaru girls. “What is a Gyaru girl?” I aksed myself, and decided to delve into this strange world–instead of working on my book for the time being. OH PROCRASTINATION. Gyaru means “gal.” These girls are also known as “ganguro” which means very dark–you’ll see…

Hime (princess) gyaru

These japanese girls go tanning regularly and dye their hair brown or blonde. They wear a lot of pink and dress like cute princesses. We all have to do something to escape our mundane lives! Why not do it with clothes, right?

On to the more extreme fashions of adolescent Japan–

More gyaru girls–these girls wear very bright colors and flowers-everywhere! Mostly hawaiian leis and hibiscus flowers. Platform shoes make them taller They paint their faces dark brown and paint their lips and eyes white. Blue contacts and bleached blonde hair complete the ensemble. As a way of rebelling against society’s idea of ideal beauty, these japanese girls traded their dainty sailor school uniforms for these outrageous looks. Their inspirations, according to some, are California girls, with their tanned skin and blonde hair.

It gets better!!

Yamanba!!–Inspired by Yama-uba or “mountain hag.”

Same idea as the rest of the gyaru girls only much darker and they paint their faces like pandas.

Read on…

Gyaru Girl Magazine “Egg”

Click “Dolly Eyes” to read about the contact lenses that lighten their eyes and make them look bigger and more “doll-like!”

One thing I love about the Gyaru girls is their nails! I would love to get my nails done like this for my wedding or something!!

Gwen Stefani adopted some of the Japanese style on her trip to Japan. Her Harajuku girls have brought Gwen a fair share of followers and criticism. Harajuku is a general name for the area around Harajuku station in Japan. Street fashions abound here! No wonder Gwen liked it there!

But lets move away from the designer clothing, expensive jewelry and glamorous lifestyle and fly over to Tokyo, Japan. This place is home of the most fashionable teens you’ll ever see. Tokyo, is the fashion capital of asia. But you already know that right. Shibuya, also know as Shibuya 109, is known as one of the fashion centers of Japan, particularly for young people, and as a major nightlife area. Japanese girls are known to have the most unique fashion sense, for me that is. From the colorful hair, out of this world clothes, pretty face, doll like eyes and funky accesories, nothing can ever compare to the way they present themselves in the world. From the tanned-faced teens to the school girl wearing girls, its always something different wherever you look. The thing is, dressing up as anime characters or wearing boots and shorts in the winter time, is socially acceptible. Even having blue, red, or to whatever color they wanted to dye their hair is also acceptable. People dont care nor even try to critisize these so called trendsetting teens. The fashion epidemic can infect you, whether you’re a girl or a boy, young or old.

One of the most talked about, life size doll, that girls are dying to look like is Ms Tsubasa Masukawa….well actually its Mrs. Yes she is married and yes she has a baby. But take one good look at her pretty face and barbie like figure and you’ll be asking yourself…..how do i become like her? Not simple…I guess you can say shes born that way. Well… consider the make up and hair styling she has to go throught everyday. But then again, with or without make-up, she’s stunning.

Dr. Liu, professor of Japanese, Spelman College Atlanta on a cultural phenom you should know. From the Introduction:

This paper explores the hip hop impact on Japanese youth culture with special reference to the ganguro[1] phenomenon among Japanese teenage girls. Ganguro has been identified as a new fashion style[2] imitating certain hip hop outward physical features, such as blackened faces and necks with shimmering makeup, blond or white hair, boots with solid platform soles, and bright colored tight miniskirts.

Three assumptions underlie the current study: (1) Ganguro as a new fashion style reflects the global influence of hip hop culture and affects Japanese youth ideology. (2) Ganguro is more than a new fashion style among Japanese teenage girls; it is an explicit expression of self- identity of those who attempt to depart from traditional Japanese cultural values and social standards. (3) Ganguro as a subculture is in conflict with mainstream Japanese culture, and although this subculture may not spread to the whole Japanese younger generation, it has socio-cultural and ideological significance in Japanese society.
