Briefly, about Hans Rosling and his talk:

Even the most worldly and well-traveled among us will have their perspectives shifted by Hans Rosling. A professor of global health at Sweden’s Karolinska Institute, his current work focuses on dispelling common myths about the so-called developing world, which (he points out) is no longer worlds away from the west. In fact, most of the third world is on the same trajectory toward health and prosperity, and many countries are moving twice as fast as the west did.

Found the software on the video to be quite fascinating, and looked into his website, Gapminder.org

Here is where the magic lies: a fact-based world view, powered by statistics. This is an inkling of an idea I had a while ago, somewhat akin to data-driven decision-making. His graphs and animations are easy to follow, aesthetically pleasing, and they contain all the important information you need to understand the significance of the trend.

Video description:

200 years ago, United Kingdom was a leading nation of the world – both in regard to health and economy. In this video, Hans Rosling details UK’s 200-year journey, to present time, and also shows that China, in the coming five years, will catch up with UK faster than ever.

If 1337 arts wasn’t enough, I’ve also discovered this next site within two days.

Consider my mind blown.

Gapminder.

A stats-based website on ‘minding the gap’ between countries (eg, infant mortality rates versus income per person – or other datasets, like increased sanitation facilities, etc.)

Cool features include:

user-defined comparisons between x and y axis (so you can compare anything against anything else – within the datasets held by the site anyway)

each country is represented as a circle which is bigger or smaller according to population size (you can adjust the scale, of course), and is coloured according to its continent (so you can also watch intra-continental development, divergence, etc.)

a ‘play’ function – at the bottom of the chart – which shows changes over time (some datasets stretch back to early 1800s – so you can see how countries have developed and compare with each other from back then till now-ish. China and India are generally interesting to watch.)

the selection tool at the right allows you to focus on particular countries.

you can ‘mind the gap’ within certain countries. China is an option for this. So you can move between what is represented at a mean international average, to what is recorded within a nation.

It’s not only interactive but also very pretty.

Choice.

A voir d’urgence.

Notes:

Sweden’s first public TEDx event is taking place this Saturday. We’re called TEDxStockholm (I know – it’s catchy, right?) and are operating under a licence from TED – Ideas worth spreading.

We have a great line-up of speakers: from graphic designers and environmental journalists to the wizard of data bubble software himself, Hans Rosling. Actually in real life Hans Rosling is a Professor of Global Health here in Stockholm, but when he gets up on stage – then watch out! He transforms statistics to magic while also popping every pre-conceived notion you might have about them and us, the poor and the rich, the developed and the developing countries.

He uses statistics, history and facts to show us that the world cannot be divided into such simplistic categories. It is, in fact, a much more complex place. We might be stuck in our old ruts, our traditional mindsets – and he wants to drag us into the modern world and a new way of looking at it. (If you have 20 minutes, this is well worth watching. It’s a talk he gave to the US State this summer.) He is a myth-busting professor that presents his data with all the adrenaline-fuelled passion of a horse racing commentator!

Oh – and have I mentioned that this guru is one of the main attractions on Saturday?

I’ll be there watching and acting as one of the moderators for our discussion groups.

And somewhere along the way, I hope to gain a new mindset!

As I better acquaint myself with the curriculum and VELS, my challenge has become trying to integrate ICT with the teaching and learning process.

Children’s Literature Log

One of the hurdles we have to complete for our English module is a children’s literature log. We are expected to keep an ongoing diary on a couple of books every week that we have selected and read. The lecturer suggested having the reviews on hard copy and putting together a resource file. I thought about the feasibility of continuing this exercise into my practicuum and career, and realize that it would take a lot of manual work (and paper!).

Instead, I decided to design a(nother) blog to put up my reviews, and each entry will be tagged with the author’s name, the main focuses of the book and the year levels. This will allow for easy searching (compared to physically sort through the filed reviews) and will also be a resource that I can easily share with others, not just in my school or Australia, but all over the world. It will also go onto my Digital Portfolio as work that I have done.

You can view my Literature Log here.

Gapminder

An exciting resource I found for the classroom is Gapminder. It is a non-for-profit organization that has ”no political agenda behind the work”, aiming to make reliable global statistics available for us to better understand the world we live in.

On the website, you can select from 150 different variables to compare against, and the graphs created on the website can also be included into presentations and web-based documents.

Here’s an example of comparing Housing Price Index with Unemployment Rates-

Gapminder can pique the curiosity of the students, encouraging them to question and connect learning with the real world. With guidance and support by the teacher, they can work together to discover the relationship between the variables and then expand their understanding by creating a poster presentation or a written piece about their ideas.

Over the last few weeks, I was spending increasingly more time on the TED website looking up talks on design issues. It was then that I came across a few projects, absolutely stunning in breadth, undertaking and purpose, so much so that I thought I’d put it up on the blog.

The first one’s called ‘We Feel Fine’, a joint project by Jonathan Harris and Sep Kamvar. It plots the emotions of many people from all around the world through diagrammatic and statistical depictions. The design is beautifully simple and easy to understand and can give you a good idea of what’s happening in the lives of people around you. It rounds of the whole attempt by providing interesting and bizarre metrics. You can find the site here and the TED preview here. (Another interesting attempt that runs along the same lines is ‘I Want You To Want Me‘.)

The second one is an even more vast project both in terms of the kind of man power and technology that went into making it and what it hopes to achieve. It’s called the AlloSphere – a large hollow sphere that it is fit with a large host of microcontrollers connected to a supercomputer. What the AlloSphere does is that it generates various designs, constructions, materials and phenomena on an atomic scale which is then projected as a digital image onto the insides of the sphere. A bridge running along a diameter permits up to 20 people at a time to bear witness to breathtaking views that science devoid of creativity cannot hope to present to us at all. Like JoAnn Kuchera-Morin, the director of the Center for Research in Electronic Art Technology (CREATE) at UC Santa Barbara, says: “imagine architects standing in the sphere and seeing microstructures and atoms arranged in space – what if they could come up with a new construction material?” [paraphrased]. Again, here’s where you can find the TED preview.

The last one is a complete revolution in its own right and I think many people will agree when I say it’s the Gapminder by Hans Rosling. The statistics chapter in mathematics you chose to willingly forget while in school because it made you sleep in a snap – Rosling changes all of that by drawing old graphs in new ways. His sports-person commentary also adds to the pace of this lecture as he plots countries and ideas onto digital graph sheets. Find the TED talk here.

What these 3 ideas did was open me up to another idea that world is changing like no other. Like Thomas Friedman puts it, “the world is flat!” He couldn’t have been more right. This world is no longer curved around the edges and you and me are no longer strangers. With Jonathan Harris’ ‘We feel fine’, I’ll know what you’re feeling some 1000 miles away as soon as you know what I’m feeling. Kuchera-Morin’s AlloSphere will open up technology that you and me never thought we could have access to. And before you know it, Hans Rosling will have it up all on a giant graph and tell everyone what we did, what we could have done and how well we did it.

The world is no longer yours or mine, no longer subject to one war in one region amongst one group of people contending for one piece of information. It has been globalized by just ideas. The world is ours, subject to our war that involves our people contending for the control over all information.

29 stycken dog i Mexiko. 2 i USA.

http://www.gapminder.org/videos/swine-flu-alert-news-death-ratio-tuberculosis/

Kanske börjar bli läge att filtrera vad du tar in?

I have to say, I was never much of a fan of statistics as a student, but that was because I wasn’t taught statistics by Hans Rosling. Anyone who wants to study or do global health should know his name as a professor on the subject at the Karolinska Institutet (Wikipedia), but even if you aren’t into global health, you should watch this video. It will change how you look at statistics forever. This, ladies and gentlemen, is why statistics needs to be taught in medical school.

Why I am a Hans Rosling fan: he’s a doctor and researcher who discovered konzo, a previously unknown paralytic disease in Africa and spent twenty years studying the epidemiology of it across remote rural areas of Africa, and found it was brought on by hunger and improperly processed cassava roots in the diet. He tells it like it is, debunking myths about the developing world and improving our understanding of healthcare in it left and right. At age 60, he’s still spry enough, excited enough and passionate enough about what he is teaching his audience to climb up on a table to point out statistics on a projector screen. He has an amazing sense of humor, even he’s giving a lecture about HIV statistics. He’s a sword swallower.

I don’t really think I need to keep going. (Wikipedia, his blog, GapMinder, book: Global Health – An Introduction)
