} Dia 30 de Janeiro de 2010 a banda Metallica fará um show @ São Paulo.

Os ingressos estão a venda na internet aos fãs da banda Metallica que são clientes dos cartões Credicard, Citibank e Diners. O show acontecerá dia 30 de Janeiro de 2010 no Estádio do Morumbi.

A banda de metal norte-americana formada em 1981, está em turnê pelo mundo e passará por São Paulo em janeiro. Na sua quarta visita ao país, a banda vai apresentar o último trabalho o “World Magnetic Tour”.

A tão clamada banda de rock pesado, está sendo esperada desde 1999, quando fez sua última aparição por aqui com o álbum “Garage Inc”.

Bob Seger wrote one of the most simple and realistic songs about the dark side of the entertainment business in his brilliant piece, “Turn the Page,” originally released on his 1973 album, Back In ‘72.

It’s easy to assume your favorite band has the perfect life when you see them in magazines, on TV and up on stage. They get special privileges, they get the girls (or guys), they get really cool free stuff and people want their autograph.

However, this is usually a brief, short-lived set of circumstances. Remember, we are talking about people here, human beings, as products. The emotions of life don’t stop just because you’re “famous,” and they are often more intense.

When the radio singles are no longer coming, the concert demand has slowed and album sales have fallen off, few care about the “famous one(s)” any longer.

But when the radio singles are coming, the concert tickets are being bought and your stuff is selling, no one cares then either, they just pretend to.

Seger sums up the loneliness, the boredom, the emptiness and the rut of life on the road (of course its implications go beyond the road life) in “Turn the Page.” One of the most powerful lines of the song says:

Out there in the spotlight, you’re a million miles away

Every ounce of energy you try to give away

As the sweat pours out your body like the music that you play

Metallica took the song and added further drama to it when they released it on their 1998 album, Garage Inc., and applied the song’s storyline to the life of a stripper. Check out this intense video, and be reminded that the entertainment industry is rife with heartache around every corner, and fleeting with every instant it offers.

I’ve written about this before. I didn’t think I would have to do so again for some time. But it’s that time of my year once again; I’m moving.

I did a quick count recently and, if my figures are correct, this is my 26th move in 8 years. Which is fine, and normal I suppose. But I’ve learned nothing.

I accumulate things. Small possessions that mean nothing but fill drawers and shelves and every inch of available space.

I attribute my need to nest to an outrageous degree to my time in boarding school. Over five years I lived in large dorms, small dorms, shared a room with four other girls and then spent two years in my own room complete with a lockable door and walls made of concrete. I filled these spaces with things. The walls with posters, pictures of family and random cuttings from magazines that made me look cool inspired me. I hoarded little ornaments, beer mats, candles, cinema stubs, trinkets and jewellery: all ways of creating an identity for myself in a place where I wore a uniform from morning to night and lived in one space for just nine months at a time.

I carried this with me. I still keep cinema stubs, fliers, postcards and myriad other forms of remembering times and places in a material fashion. I cover walls with photos of family and friends, though I am starting to use frames like the grown up I want to become.

Last night I started to clean. I started to empty spaces of rubbish, rubbish I don’t want following me to my new, clean, bright apartment in the ‘hood.

I got through one drawer. One drawer. I filled a paper bag with luas tickets, club fliers, price lists of beauty salons (I’m am so fickle, and not at all loyal when it comes to picking one), and little bottles of festival-sized body spray, hand cream, suncream and deodorant that have been cluttering up my room.

Tonight I need to tackle the wardrobe and be ruthless. My mother does this regularly:  raiding our wardrobes at home for clothes she decides we don’t need or want or will ever wear again. I lost a Fred Perry jacket, a green sundress and loads of t-shirts this way. While I am more inclined to subscribe to her ethos of clean I am reluctant to throw everything away. I may wear that patterned dress I bought in Penneys for €6 someday. I may wear the impossibly high platform shoes that make my legs look great but in which I am entirely unable to walk.

And let’s not even talk about the book habit.

This story could run and run. But it has to end sometime. I will eventually move home before moving across some tract of water. And you can’t take biographies of Mao and Homocide: AYear on the Killing Streets with you in a backpack.

So from tonight on I’m going to attempt ruthlessness. And from this moment on I will desist my nesting impulse and realise that wherever I lay my hat becomes my home, regardless of how short a time I’m there. I don’t need the things, I have my memories and a camera. Two cameras. And some disposables..and a new yearning for a Holga.

In sixth year of school I listened to a lot of Metallica. Particularly the Garage Inc album. I quite like covers albums, the year after I devoted months to RATM’s Renegades album -  the opening bars of ‘Pistol Grip Pump’ remind me of that first year in Dublin. Today in work a co-worker was listening to Bob Seger, and while I do like the original I’ll always lean toward the Metallica cover. Because when I was 17 and angry and stressed about stupid exams it made me feel better. And after that year my moving began, so it feels apt.

Out there in the spotlight you’re a million miles away,
Every ounce of energy, you try and give away,
As the sweat pours out your body like the music that you play.

Later in the evening as you lie awake in bed,
With the echo from the amplifiers ringing in your head,
You smoke the day’s last cigarette, remembering what she said.

Bob Seger e a Silver Bullet Band

Com quase 50 anos de carreira, Bob Seger é uma das figuras mais conhecidas do rock and roll nos Estados Unidos, e um dos principais expoentes da cena de Detroit, fazendo parte do Rock and Roll Hall of Fame desde 2004. Inspirado principalmente por Elvis Presley e James Brown, Seger tem como um dos temas principais de suas canções a classe operária, bastante presente na área de Detroit, devido à existência de diversas montadoras.

É interessante notar que, embora a influência da música de Seger esteja presente em artistas tão diversificados quanto o Metallica (que gravou uma versão de Turn the Page para o álbum Garage Inc.) ou Richie Kotzen, ele não foi capaz de projetar sua fama muito além dos Estados Unidos.

Para aqueles que desejam conhecer o trabalho de Seger, nenhum disco é melhor do que Night Moves, responsável pelo sucesso que adquiriu nacionalmente nos Estados Unidos e no qual é possível encontrar alguns dos maiores hits de sua carreira.

O álbum já começa com a excelente Rock and Roll Never Forgets, um hino sobre como nunca é tarde para se ouvir rock, e que idade e responsabilidades não são sinônimos de escutar músicas mais calmas ou deixar de sair para se divertir. Em seguida, temos a canção título Night Moves, descrevendo um intenso caso de paixão adolescente de verão, em que os protagonistas sabem que seu relacionamento é mais sexual do que romântico. Ao seu final, há uma passagem para o futuro, onde o protagonista acorda ao som de trovões, lembrando daquele verão e dando um novo sentido à frase título da música.

Em seguida vem as faixas Fire Down Below, que fala sobre prostituição de uma forma leve, sem tentar ser crítica nem moralista, Sunburst, sobre um concerto de rock e Sunspot Baby, a respeito de uma mulher que abandona seu parceiro, deixando para traz um mar de dívidas que ele agora deve pagar.

Mainstreet é o outro grande sucesso do álbum, com sua letra que trata do amor impossível que seu protagonista sente por uma dançarina, nunca manifestado nem tampouco esquecido. Fechando o álbum, temos as faixas Come to Poppa, Ship of Fools e Mary Lou, que, embora tenham qualidade, acabam não atingindo o mesmo nível das demais composições do álbum.

Night Moves é um daqueles CDs que podem não ser totalmente originais, nem apresentar um exemplo de genialidade em matéria de composições, mas, por seu clima agradável e estabilidade no nível de qualidade das canções, conquista quem o escuta de primeira. Um álbum essencial para qualquer apreciador do rock and roll mais básico, que se preocupa antes de tudo em ser divertido e acessível.

A BANDA RETORNA ÀS RAÍZES DO SPEED METAL EM NOVO CD PRODUZIDO POR RICK RUBIN

Enquanto o Metallica se empenhava em compor seu novo álbum, durante dois anos, o famoso produtor musical, Rick Rubin, deu o seguinte conselho a seus integrantes: “Imaginem que vocês não são o Metallica”, disse Rick, “Vocês não têm nenhum hit de sucesso e agora devem trazer novas músicas para competir em uma espécie de ‘batalha de bandas’, como seria esse som?”

“Isso era o mais óbvio e era o que não estávamos conseguindo fazer”, disse o vocalista e guitarrista, James Hetfield. Rubin, um amigo de longa data de todos os integrantes e que pela primeira vez produziu um álbum da banda, “nos deu um direcionamento com esse tipo de discurso”, completa o guitarrista.

Programado para ser lançado em setembro através da Warner Bros., o novo álbum ainda sem título (até o momento o título do CD ainda não havia sido revelado, sabe-se agora que se chamará Death Magnetic) é o último trabalho do Metallica desde St. Anger, de 2003 e o primeiro com o novo baixista, Robert Trujillo (ex-Ozzy Osbourne e ex-Suicidal Tendencies), que se juntou à banda em fevereiro daquele ano. Esse novo trabalho também marca a triunfante volta do Metallica ao estilo Speed Metal, que consagrou a banda em álbuns como Ride the Lightining, de 1984 e Master of Puppets, de 1986. As dez novas faixas que compõem Death Magnetic contêm uma mistura intrincada de riffs pesados, enquanto o guitarrista, Kirk Hammet, volta a fazer o que sabe melhor: solos de guitarra ultra-rápidos e com muita técnica, inexistentes em St. Anger.

“Rick foi bem claro quando disse que gostaria de produzir o melhor álbum que o Metallica já fez…”, disse o baterista Lars Ulrich, “a idéia era nos levar a um novo patamar, incorporando os elementos musicais da época em que a banda estava em sua melhor forma. Toda vez que nos encontrávamos em uma encruzilhada, dizíamos: ‘em 1985, teríamos feito dessa forma.’”. Uma das letras ilustra bem o que James Hetfield quer atingir com suas novas composições: “…te perseguir durante seus pesadelos…” (ainda não há um título definitivo para a música) que contém um estilo de guitarras marcantes, com mudanças repentinas de tempo e com a marca registrada de Lars Ulrich, um massacre de bumbos duplos que mais soam como um trovão.

Uma outra música combina o estilo pesado da banda com uma levada funkeada, mudanças bruscas de tempo, além de mostrar uma faceta de James Hetfield um tanto reflexiva e feroz (“Suicídio, eu já estou morto / Esse é apenas o funeral pelo qual tenho esperado…”). Uma terceira música nos remete à avalanche de riffs pesados da época de …And Justice For All, de 1988, mas com uma batida que mais lembra a marcha de um pelotão em guerra. “O que não mata, nos fortalece”, canta James, na mesma faixa. Ele diz acreditar em tal provérbio: “Soa como o Metallica de antigamente, mas com muito mais significado.”

O Metallica é, atualmente, uma banda diferente daquela que enfrentou inúmeras sessões de terapia em grupo e quase terminou suas atividades durante as gravações de St. Anger; uma situação que, diga-se de passagem, foi um tanto estranha e que foi capturada no documentário Some Kind of Monster. “Eu fiquei um pouco receoso quando assisti aquele documentário…”, confessa Rick Rubin, “Mas encontrei um grupo muito mais unido e coeso depois de tanta lavação de roupa suja”. Hetfield, que se internou em uma clínica de reabilitação durante as sessões de St. Anger, continua “no caminho da sobriedade até os dias de hoje”, como ele mesmo confirma. A banda trabalhou sem parar por apenas algumas semanas para minimizar o tempo longe de suas famílias (todos agora são pais de família). “Fazer discos na década de 90 não foi lá muito divertido”, diz Lars. “Nesse trabalho fizemos uma promessa: sermos os mais gentis possíveis, uns com os outros.”

Os trabalhos começaram como de costume, com o uso do que eles chamam de “fitas de riffs”, idéias individuais de cada membro, ou mesmo do material gravado durante os aquecimentos no backstage dos shows. Todo esse material cru era então escolhido principalmente por James e Lars, os principais compositores desde o início da banda, em 1981. O quarteto levou o ano inteiro de 2006 para moldar centenas de “fitas de riffs” num total de 26 músicas, das quais apenas 13 entrariam no produto final. O produtor Rick Rubin visitou o Metallica em seu estúdio na Califórnia com um intuito de ajudar a banda a escolher quais músicas estavam funcionando e quais não estavam. “Havia uma tonelada de material para ser gravado e eu e o James nos perguntávamos a toda hora, ‘esse riff é de qual música mesmo?’”, conta Kirk Hammet. “Os riffs mudavam de uma música para outra, a todo o momento”, continua o guitarrista.

Mas entre março e abril de 2007, quando o Metallica se instalou no Sound City Studios em Van Nuys, Califórnia, para gravar a base das novas músicas, os integrantes decidiram gravar tudo ao vivo, quase de maneira artesanal. “O Rick não estava muito preocupado se as músicas estavam perfeitas”, disse Lars, e continua, “O que interessava pra ele naquele momento é se estávamos tocando juntos, como uma banda de verdade”. Ele dizia: ‘Cara, vocês estão pegando fogo’, ou ‘Isso foi péssimo, se não conseguirem acertar isso nas próximas duas semanas, é melhor irem pra casa!’”.

James finalmente começou a gravar seus vocais em fevereiro do mesmo ano. Ele disse ainda não ter certeza sobre do que realmente se tratam suas letras, “tudo se torna bem mais claro um ou dois anos depois”, mesmo assim, ele sabe que a mensagem que quer passar hoje em dia é completamente diferente das letras de músicas como “Damage, Inc.” e “Whiplash”, compostas ainda nos anos 80. “Eu basicamente escrevia sobre a sensação de tocar ao vivo”, diz James. “‘Battery’ (do disco Master of Puppets), por exemplo, fala sobre meus dias na Battery Street, em São Francisco”. Ele então aponta para uma nova canção, a frenética “My Apocalypse”: “Isso é algo com o qual me identifico, seja o fim de algo relacionado comigo, ou algo que eu vejo e que esteja chegando ao fim. Eu tenho filhos e não quero algumas coisas para eles. E, sei lá, hoje em dia ando muito ligado nessas questões sobre ‘guerra’, sobre sobrevivência”.

Após mais de dois anos trabalhando no CD, Rick Rubin aprendeu ao menos uma lição para o futuro e brinca, “Nada impede que esse processo seja cada vez mais rápido”. “Antes desse álbum, os meus preferidos eram as duas edições do “Garage” (o EP de covers, Garage Re-revisited, de 1987 e a edição que incluía novos covers, Garage Inc., de 1998). Eles mostravam a banda como ela realmente era, além de terem sido feitos de forma bem rápida. Talvez possamos tentar isso num futuro próximo.”
