Give ‘em some love.

Hard rock duos have always had it rough – filling up a room with sound can be damn difficult with only two men. Nonetheless, Austin angerfiends Damage Pants manage to do more than fill a garage with their rough-at-the-edges thrash rock. Combining post-hardcore vocals with more upbeat garage rock rhythms, this group’s self-titled vinyl debut release is abrasive enough to wear down senses and styluses alike. Read the rest of the review.

Believe it or not, the day we got back from tour Jason and I had a show.

The show was on Monday night November 16 at Robert Seven’s Artoreum – his home/studio and incredible art gallery/performance space. It was a rare Sugar & Spice performance – my project with Caroline Pond. We opened up for our good friend Maury Rosenberg of Hypnotic Clambake, who was in the area on tour from New York. The show was sold-out, and full of familiar smiling faces. The Sugar & Spice set was a complete blast. Caroline is one of my dearest friends and it is such a treat to play music with her. We hadn’t played together in months, but the practice we had earlier that day on my porch payed off. It was a total warm fuzzies sort of musical experience. Jason played guitar with Sugar & Spice as well was with Maury. Good stuff.

It was a yummy night and the perfect way to return home to our sweet Asheville artistic community.

Then on Wednesday night I went out to see Jason play his weekly gig with the Screamingj’s at MoDaddy’s because Maury was sitting in with them. Maury was dressed up crazy in a wig with a doll head attached to his accordion. The band sounded awesome and the energy was thrilling. I danced much of the night.

Catching up to more current events, last Friday we played a show with Pinche Gringo and the Lonesome Chihuahua’s at the Westerwood Tavern in Greenboro, NC. It was a perfect grungy rock show. Mad Tea and Pinche Gringo both killed it. The crowd was nifty. Thoroughly enjoyable. Mad Tea is going to play a lot more shows with Pinche Gringo in 2010.

Hope you get to catch one.

Much like Hypnotic’s 3-d album cover, the music of Muck and the Mires comes straight at you. Kim Fowley’s production is sharp and thin – he usually just throws the songs out there without fanfare (“Cocoa Beach” does get a roll of surf). When the songs are strong enough, like the garage crunch of “Crush on Me” and the killer opening track “Doreen”, it appears to be a marriage made in heaven. But when it doesn’t, it exposes a song like “Hang All over Me” for what it is; a pedestrian pop rocker that disappears from memory almost immediately. But that’s the beauty of an album of short pop songs – mental floss is three minutes away, and there are far more hits than misses.

Many bands ape The Beatles, but these guys cleverly went all the way back to Hamburg (and if “Hamburg Time” doesn’t get your mop top shimmying, there’s something wrong with you). But they don’t stop there – “Wipeout” is embedded in “Cocoa Beach”, “Do It All Over Again” subtly buries the theme from The Munsters in its melody, and “Treat Me Right” sounds like a teenaged Dave Edmunds grave-robbing Scotty Moore-era Elvis. The title track should be the theme song for a revival of Where the Action Is. I don’t think this is the best Muck album, but Fowley has captured a rawer, live sound, accentuated by deeper, raspier vocals from Evan Shore.

So what the hell, this isn’t rocket science. Do you wanna have fun or not? Pop this in and turn it up before that hot chick who wants to dance leaves the party.

There are many reasons why I love the internet, but the most important for me is the randomness of discovery.

The last few days I’ve been jiving on lots of garage, mod, protopunk and 60s pop. Reading about protopunk took me to discover and download some music from a band called ? The Mysterians. They were the first band to ever be described as “punk.”

I was talking about about ? and the Mysterians on the radio last week when a Zoner far wiser than I called up to say, “The Mysterians might have been called the first punk band, but the actual first hard rocking punkers were a 1960 garage band from Seattle called The Sonics.”

The Sonics? Sure enough, they have a groovy harsh punker sound. I went to iTunes to try and find one of their classic records, either ‘Here are the Sonics’ or ‘Boom.” Sadly, neither were available. But searching led me to a podcast for a theatre sound technician form the UK named Steve Brown. Steve’s blog/podcast is nothing but audio soundscapes and weirdness.

I ended up poking around there this evening listening to the sounds of streets in Brighton or Seoul or wherever Steve decided to plant a mic and hit record. One of my favourite posts is this audio/visual collage of Cold War era radio transmissions. Very geeky stuff for you audiophiles find my blog. I subscribed to his podcast. Lots of great stuff to inspire and maybe one day sample for a project.

***

Coral and I took Mads to Coquitlam this weekend for a little visit. Coral bought a book on the boat called “The Book of Negros,” by Lawrence Hill. Coral can’t put it down. I’ll need to get in line to read it when she’s done.

The book basically follows the life of a young girl who is captured in her village in West Africa. She is 11 years old and sent to the Americas to become a slave. She gets freed during the American Revolution and is resettled in Nova Scotia before returning to Sierra Leone.

While reading, Coral occasionally pops up to ask me about some historical event that they mention in the novel, like Saint Helena Island or the old French colony of Saint Domingue. I’d find it for her, do a quick read then have to keep poking around. Saint Domingue is now Haiti! One of the poorest countries (and THE poorest in the West) in the world. But in the colonial times, it was the wealthiest colony. Haiti was the site of a slave rebellion that led to its independence, the only successful slave rebellion in Earth’s history. And yet 200 years later, the country is in shambles. Its sad to think about. In the late 1700s and early 1800, these black slaves are besting the armies of Britain, Spain, and Napoleon’s France… but get successfully manage their resources, and today the nation is broke and the people are poor.

The book isn’t about the slave rebellion of Haiti, but they mention it in the book… the whites in British colonies are freaking out, “what if it happens here?”

Go with yourself.

I’m shuffling off to Buffalo (NY) to bear witness, to testify, to have my head dipped in the Baptismal pool of garage and punk and pure unadulterated genius that is The Reigning Sound. The combination of great band and great club (Mohawk Place) should make sparks fly with abandon.

I could listen to Greg Cartwright’s songs all day long – they resonate whether he’s playing a solo set or rocking the house with the band (David Wayne Gay on bass, Lance Willie on drums and the amazing Dave Amels on organ). In an era where the record industry machine is collapsing, they are a reminder of what rock’n'roll was supposed to be about all along. High expectations? You bet!

But I have a feeling they will vault that high bar and slam dunk my melon.

Seems like everyone is getting back together these days, whether for money or a shot at career closure; some are actually reinvigorated and creating viable new music. So if you are pining the loss or lethargy of a favorite band or artist, there’s hope.

(Of course, nothing would be better than the three guys in the forefront of this picture sharing a stage again. Maybe if I leave that tooth under my pillow…)

Doesn’t have to be someone on a Van Halen level. For example, Fastball thought they had taken a long enough hiatus and decided to regroup – the result was a great new record. So why not our favorites?

So here’s ten acts right off the top of my head that are dormant; I wish they were making records right now. At least I have the fruits of their labor to date to savor over and over again. If any of these are new to you, please check them out. Maybe it will make you revive a few of your own favorites.

Because that’s the beauty of legacy. It’s right there.

With every musician and their pet throwing around an album here, and a song there for free, it’s impossible to not appreciate the internet and it’s ability to distribute music. However, it’s a shame when musicians really limit their content to EP and LP releases, and while fans can only really be lucky and grateful for any extra material they may receive, there’s a common consensus – nay – expectation, that there should be a greater output of creativity as the internet has almost redefined the term ‘convenience’. It’s no secret that Cox loves sharing his works, with songs being released on the Deerhunter blog at an overwhelming rate. So, it’s really no surprise to see a bonus EP to accompany his second solo album, Logos.

The last few years records of rare and current pop from Africa have been coming out from the likes of Analog Africa, Mississippi Records and Sound Way, Sublime Frequencies and Honest Jon’s on a weekly basis. The heightened exposure of African pop has been a boon, but if you’ve been looking stuff outside of Africa the pickings have been a bit more slim. Say you were looking for for garage sounds from Persia you probably been coming up empty handed. The other day I was flipping through records over at Sonic Boom in Ballard and came across this beautiful cover (above) in the new release bin. Who knew that Iran even had a psychedelic garage scene in the 1960’s? I sure didn’t, but there it was as plane as day, 17 Golden Garage Psych Nuggets from the Iranian 60’s Scene (released back in April of this year). My curiosity had been piqued and I pulled the record from the bin, paid more than I probably should have for it and with a rush of excitement went home and put it on the turntable.

I’m pretty sure that the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea have little to no surf. Lack of any big waves along the Persian coast did not seem to stop the Ventures from becoming a pretty big influence in Iran in the 1960’s because more than a couple of the songs on this compilation have that surf, twang sound that the Tacoma band perfected. That kind of makes sense, because the Ventures specialized in instrumental rock and thus there were no lyrics to decipher or translate just the primal stomp of the guitar, bass and drums. It wasn’t all Ventures influence in 1960’s Iran, Ojooba Ha get a little psychedelic Circa the Beatles‘ Revolver on one song and then go all Morricone on another, the Littles have a Mamas & the Papas thing goin’ on, and Group Takhala La could be the Iranian Animals. There is also some funk courtesy a strange cover of Respect from Googoosh. Based on this record it seems like the scene in Iran at this time was both diverse and exciting.

The record has extensive liner notes that set the scene and try to explain how Iran has always been at a tug of war between religion and a Western affectation that many people in the country have. It also tries to piece together a history of the bands on the record, but because of Iran’s closed society the task is left up to afficionatos from the Netherlands and Turkey. The liner notes, like the record, leave you with a vague sense of the 60’s rock scene in Iran and wanting to find out more about it. The entire thing leaves me hoping that this isn’t just a one-off release. There is more, and if this has you curious about rock n’ roll in Iran I found a compilation that came out in 2004 of the Iranian punk scene called The Persian New Waves (Mawdj-e Naw e Farsi), but it looks to be out of print. I haven’t found a copy (digital or otherwise) yet, but I’ll keep hunting.

Artist: Jay Reatard Full Title: Singles ‘06-’07 Label: In the Red Year: 2008 My Rating:

Artist: Jay Reatard
Full Title: Singles ‘06-’07
Label: In the Red
Year: 2008
My Rating: A/ 9.4/10

1) Night of Broken Glass- 9.3- Solid opener. I love the shattering of glass as the first thing you hear! It’s pretty damn catchy, simple guitar, nothing groundbreaking, but an overall sound recording.

2) Another Person- 9.1- Even catchier than the first track, but not as rocking, still great though. It’s an upbeat track musically (odd for Jay I suppose). Lyrically, this person gives him the “creeps” haha. He loves that word. The guitar is really catchy and I dig the mini solos. There is also great use of vocals (all Jay) in which he sings the lead and then he takes a separate set of his vocal and throws it in the background cool stuff! I’m not sure, if this is the first instance of this, but it’s certainly not the last. I guess that was an unintentional reference to the previous number haha.

3) All Over Again- 8.8- A good tune, but it doesn’t stand out that much from any of his other material, though I have said this before about other Jay tracks that I now love, so clearly early impressions do not dictate offical tastes. I will say I like the raw “Jay” drum work in this song. Simple, but not reatarded.

4) Feeling Blank Again- 9.6- One of the compilation’s better offerings and one of my new Jay favorites! Another excellent use of the aforementioned vocals tactic. The backing vocals are simply “uhhhh” but, they are certainly creepy and perfectly complement the lead vocals in which Jay describes how it feels to feel blank: “can’t breathe.” I feel a tad bit claustrophobic when listening to this, that’s how effective the music/lyrics are.

5) I Know A Place- 9.8- Amazing pop song. It’s too bad I didn’t recognize this song when I saw him perform it at Harpers Ferry (I only know he played it because I have the set list). I would have definitely sang along, but anyone who has seen Jay live knows that even if you know one of his songs, you can still miss it, that’s how fast and furious the Jay Reatard Colossius is live! But, I digress… Anyway, back to the song; superb, soft, vocals. This is a love ballad of sorts. Kinda sounds like it is crawling outta an 80s soundtrack, but good lol. That’s the best way I can describe it without insulting it, cause typically 80s pop blew massive 80s Alf spunk! Lyrically, the tune captures Jay’s “soft” almost romantic side; he attempts to persuade some girly into escaping “away… away from here” to a place he knows, where they can be alone. Most likely he is referring to some shady, uncomfortable place, like the back of a Volkswagon somewhere in the middle of Memphis. Then strangely in the next verse, the tune loses it’s love ballady sentiment and transforms into a suicide note about escaping said lover: “I know a place, where I can go to be alone, I know a place where I can crawl to die. Away… away from you.” Odd, but kind of cool.
6) Don’t Let Him Come Back- 9.8- Another Softie, but Classic! It gets stuck in your head easily. I really enjoy the slow beginning which I think is a guitar?! Haha, I’m not really technically sophisticated. It sounds like keyboards are ramblin’ in the background, either way it all works.

7) Hammer I Miss You- 9.7- Terrific sing along and extremely uplifting! If Glen can recall I was singing the lyrics on the way to the Jay concert and have been since. It’s not a rocker like “It’s So Easy” and it’s not a softie like “No Time,” it’s simply a pumping pop number about missing some Hammer dude. Gay Reatard cough cough. In terms of Garage Pop, you can’t touch this…

It’s So Useless- 9.6- Heavy and very very catchy. I love the loud guitars, one of the comp’s heavier tracks and yet still has it’s hooks. It’s more akin to Blood Visions tracks, I suppose, but it still has this comp’s poppy/lovey dovey flavour. This track stands out because it doesn’t have soft vocals like most of the other tracks, but rather they are screamed and shouted. You can headbang and mosh and do your thang.

9) All Wasted- 9.0- Cool track about zombies. But, not the kind of zombies you want to walk around at night with. Nah these guys are “all useless…all wasted.” A decent guitar solo (haha, you know what I mean) toward the end. This one lacks the catchiness of it’s buddies, but nonetheless has strength.

10) In the Dark- 8.7- This doesn’t stand out that much to me. It’s a good song, but just doesn’t bring anything new to the table and isn’t particularly catchy. But, yeah if you like Reatarded music you will probably like it.

11) Searching For You- 10.0- This makes the hair on my testicles stand up and do the tequila! For those of you Blood Visions devotees out there, this track is an acoustic version of BV’s “Fading All Away.” BELIEVE ME, you haven’t heard “Fading All Away” like this before. Sure, since it’s acoustic, it’s not as angry or heavy, but it is infitnitely more malignant. This psychotic, musical madness is completely unpolished, noisy and sounds like some amateur, lonely, melancholy, Jay fan lying on his bed covering the song, warning his listeners of his menacing plans of murder and torture. This callow sounding approach in no way hinders the song, it only adds to its eeriness, a feat I did not think was possible!

12) Haunting You- 9.7- This is pretty much like the above track in style and sound: raw, acoustic, unpolished, version of a Blood Visions song. This time it’s “Nightmares,” a classic in it’s own right. I really dig this track for similar reasons to “Searching For You,” but it’s not quite as strong as the former and I prefer the original (unless this one is the original and the BV version is the second? Release dates? Shit, now I’m really curious about this and the last track).

13) Let It All Go- 9.4- Yet another hooky love number! I really dig the poppy guitars, pulsing, but steady drums, and best of all the repeated lyrics, “And now I need you, and now I need you, and now I need you… say that’s you want me, say that’s you want me… you never loved me, you never loved me….” He finished the show we saw with this song and I can definitely see why, it’s a powerful closer and overall pop song.
Tracks 14-17 are pretty much the same versions of their Blood Visions counterparts, but weaker and of poorer sound quality, in my opinion anyway. Although, “Turning Blue” is an exception; it’s not better thant the BV track, but basically on par. Here they are without ratings:

14) Blood Visions
15) Turning Blue
16) It’s So Easy
17) Oh It’s Such A Shame

Overall, this is an exceptional CD and is truly underated. Some of Jay’s strongest pop songs appear on this compilation and it makes me realize that his Matador Comp wasn’t as big of a transition as I thought it was. His latest release, Watch Me Fall, is definitely his biggest leap, though it’s my least favorite, but that’s a whole other story. This singles set ranks behind Matador Singles ‘08 and Blood Visions as my favorite Jay work, but it still receives a well-deserved A. I hear through the grapevine that these tracks are nonexistent online, well then I highly suggest shelling out some dough for this one, you won’t be disapointed and if you are, oh it’s such a shame!
