Tonight’s challenge was kind of fun. I like the idea of branding products that possess a sense of irony. I haven’t listened to Sir Mix-a-lot recently so, why not a Louis Vuitton garden trowel? I’ve seen Louis Vuitton garbage bags! I could actually see Nike getting into the hand tool business. Why not? They could apply their brand to pretty much anything at this point. I’m surprised we haven’t seen more cross marketing on their part. Just kidding. If people are willing to pay for brand recognition, I think a person that pays 10’s of thousands for a watch would be willing to buy a gold plated hammer…

Inventions, tools, machines, all are created because there is a perceived need, or because they will

Inventions, tools, machines, all are created because there is a perceived need, or because they will improve our quality of life. But what about those that actually make our life worse? Is everything always for the better, or do some of those labour-saving devices do more harm than good?

Let’s look at the Leaf Blower – a favourite tool in the autumn for a lot of people clearing fallen leaves.

Some basic features are that it is designed to shift leaves from A to B, it consumes a lot of petrol in order to do that, it must be carried on the operator’s back while in use, and it makes a hell of a racket.

Does it make life better for us? Well individually perhaps it does, in that it blows the leaves to someone else’s yard, thus the leaves become SEP (Someone else’s problem) and we can forget about them (until our neighbours blow them back again!). Perhaps the chore of having to carry the motor on your back, and suffer the deafening sound is worth that effort. Personally, I think not.

But if we think of more than just the individual, it definitely does not make life better.

The noise generated while it is in use is enough to trigger a noise abatement order if it was for any other machine. And all a leaf blower does is to shift leaves from one place to another. It does not actually solve any problems – the leaves still have to be picked up!

If we consider the choices we have for tools, the leaf blower is up against one of the simplest tools ever invented – the rake. And as far as I can see, the leaf blower loses in all areas of comparison:

So it is time to ditch the blower and get out the rake. It is a better option all round.

If you really want to carry a noisy machine around on your backs, at least make it a vacuum instead of a blower so that it clears the leaves instead of just pushing them somewhere else.

Garden tools are very helpful in getting the work done efficiently; it makes the work easier to be completed. Without the garden tools you have to use some other method of how you want the job done. Garden tools are inseparable from gardens, and yet, while the history of gardens has been exhaustively explored, the story of garden tools has been virtually ignored Garden tools are a gardener’s best friend (besides his garden, of course). Garden tools can do more than just help a gardener weed his garden.

Garden tools are needed by a gardener for his practice of growing and maintaining plants and trees. A gardener needs a wide variety of tools. Garden tools are any tool that can be used in the practice of gardening such as a shovel, hoe, pruner, and trowel even something as big as a tractor or a combine for farming fields. Which is related to the practices of agriculture and horticulture? Garden tools are as necessary for a gardener as hammers and nails are for a carpenter. Make sure that you have the right garden tools.

Garden tools are commonly exposed to water and wet plants and dirt. It may take tools a long time to dry inside a shed or garage, so keep an old towel by where you put your tools away and give them a quick wipe down each time you put them away. Garden tools are simply essential to larger gardening endeavors. A garden’s life is fragile and must be taken care of properly. You should always harvest your crops before the fall’s frost comes in the late fall. A lot of people make the mistake of not taking the frost seriously. If the days’ high can reach in the 60’s (Fahrenheit) then its possible for frost to accumulate during the early morning. Water does freeze at 32 degree’s but frost can occur at 40 degrees.

Gardening magazines will give you lots of innovative ideas about things you can do to maintain your gardening tools. Things like putting your long handled tools into a capped plastic pipe filled with linseed oil or storing your digging tools head down in a bucket of sand that’s had a quart of old motor oil poured in. Gardening is one of the favorite pastimes among people across the globe and everybody has an opinion about how to do it the right way.

Weeds are a gardener’s nightmare and can really spoil your enjoyment of you garden. A gardener’s dream is to have a lush, green lawn and neat, colorful borders all free from weeds. Weeding trowels are used for weeding in cracks or placing bulbs between pavers. They are provided with carbon steel large blade for quicker gardening results. Weed twisters also fall into this classification. Other terms often used for weed pullers are weeding tools, weed tools, weed diggers, weed knives, weed up rooter tools, weed pulling tools, weed puller tools, crabgrass tools and various combinations of these and similar terms.

Weeds are far easier to control in the early stages of development. If the weeds do get a strong foothold, they will grow extremely deep roots that make it very hard to control and remove. Weeds are also a matter of perspective. Bermuda grass is a great turf grass, but it is considered a weed if it invades your flowerbed or mixes with your prized St. Weeds is divided into three classes. Class A Weeds are ones which are not yet widespread in patches but could have serious impacts if they became established.

Gardening is moderate, and sometimes strenuous, exercise that incorporates many important elements of accepted exercise regimes, such as stretching, repetition and movement, and even resistance principles similar to weight training, all while burning calories. For older gardeners, especially women, gardening can also help reduce problems with osteoporosis. Add that to a good calcium supplement and the vitamin D that you’re absorbing from the sunshine and you can’t loose! As with any exercise program, beginning gardeners should start slowly and build up their strength.

Gardeners find that the more they learn about plants and gardening, the more they want to know. I’m always learning something new. Most of us learn about gardening from other gardeners.

Plants that are happy with their growing conditions will be healthier than plants that are stressed. Soil preparation is the key to successful gardening. You can use any manner of tools and fertilizers to help prepare your soil. I’ve always used a spading fork shovels and hoes to work my soil. Since I tend to tire easily, I’ve always had small plots. Going with yard waste is a great use of what might otherwise wind up in a landfill. Once it’s composted, the additional nutrients are a very valuable addition to your garden soil. Fall is an optimum time for many gardeners because of the amount of organic materials you can get free thanks to fallen leaves and general yard waste from cleaning up the rest of the yard and garden. What you want to wind up with is soil that is easy to work: crumbly, loose, and fluffy. I’m getting older now, so I purchased a small garden tiller last fall. I’m finally going to get to try it out! We’ve had a long winter this year, so I’ve been grinding my teeth instead of playing in the dirt.

Soil drainage is also critical to plant health. Plants set in soil that doesn’t drain properly may fail to bloom or fruit and at worst, will eventually rot and die. You should periodically inspect plants for the presence of foliage and fruit-feeding insects as well as the occurrence of diseases.

Gardening is a lot more than a valuable hobby or a way to have fresh vegetables and salads. Gardening is a relaxing activity, great for unwinding after a difficult day, especially when you keep to a small, personal scale. Even on a small scale, gardening is a lot of work, but when you stand back and look at what you built with your own hands, the sense of accomplishment is amazing.

Designed by Oxford engineer Robert Todd.

This light weight but very tough blade can be used for general digging. The 75cm long wooden handle is suitable for both men and women and make light work of digging.

The blade has an ingenious cutting edge for cutting through roots, slicing turf, trims lawn and border edges and slices through heavy clay.

The blade has gaps which reduces the weight, also the surface area is less and doesn’t become so heavily clogged in heavy soils making digging a laborious back-breaking chore. The blade can riddle soils like a fork.

The triangular pointed teeth can make easy work of weeds in a gravel path as well as raking for seed drills.

This nifty garden tool can be used for digging in the garden as well as making light work of digging and planting vegetables in the allotment.

The SPORK blade is easily sharpened to keep a true edge throughout its long working life.

Robert has also produced the SPRAKE and smaller hand working garden tools in much the same ingenious design.
