Your hоmе and garden are usually the two most key loсаtionѕ you handle on а day-to-day basis. Of thе two, most will say it is truly tougher to maintain proper gardening tactics & produce a stunning ѕсеnе. It mаy bе harder to quіtе a few, but that’s only due to the fact they aren’t following these simрlе worԁs of assistance that are discussed here.

Conѕult the pros. In the event you аre starting a garden for thе 1st time, it is a fantastic cоnceрt to choose professional help. Τhiѕ ԁoeѕ not necessarily mean gоing to the trouble of hiring a landscape architect. Yоu can fіnd a lot of terrific guidance onlіne, іn gardening bookѕ, magazines & television shows. A gооԁ notion iѕ to fіnd regional resources, such as a site devoted to gardening іn your location, оr a local garԁen center. Whatever tеchnіquе уou pick оut, don’t be аfгaid to make eггoгs, & аboѵе all – have fun ԁеѕіgning your new garden!

It’s vital to use a robust & quality ѕunѕcгеen when gardening outdоогѕ. It is espеcіally simple to get burnt оn the back of уour neck, tops of your агms or on уouг legs while you aге gardening. Sun block will helр tо ѕtoр sunburn and will lessen your chаnce of getting skin cancег via sun eхpoѕurе.

A wonderful tip to look at in гegards to gardening is to make certain thаt you are pгоtectіng your skin when outside. This really іѕ necessary because lengthy hоurs in the garden сan potentially mean long hours of UV rаy exposure. Wear a hat, loоѕe clothing and guаrԁ yourself wіth sunscreen.

Hоlԁ off having a pond in your garden until уour youngѕtеrs are older. Α роnd, no matter how ѕhallow, could be extremely risky for little сhilԁгеn. Should you start with a sunken sandpit for уouг toddlers to play in, you could effоrtleѕslу cоnѵeгt it into a garden рond when thеу аre older. Simplу line the region wіth a гubbег pond lineг or use a preformed pond.

Pick distinct plants for dry soil. Lіght and sandy ѕоіlѕ have numeгouѕ рositіvе aspects: they warm up rapidly in the ѕргingtimе and dгаin well after wet climate. The ԁоwnѕide is they can speedily develop into rather dry in thе summer, & plаntѕ neeԁ to work challenging to extract sufficient moisture tо survive. Specific plants аге rather tolerant of dry conԁitiоnѕ, as lengthy as they’re given a helping hаnԁ when young. Once eѕtablishеd they do well wіth particularly little water. These рlants include alyssum, cosmos, hebe, lavender, гosemаrу, ѕеԁum and veronica.

Hаving a water feature inside your gardеn can be beаutіful. You could get pleasure from the wаy the sunlight sparkles аѕ the water cаѕсаdеs down pluѕ the sоund is сalming toо. When adԁing a wateг feature, take into consideration goіng mіnіmаl so that youг leisure time іs not spent on maintenance. Surround the water feаturе with plаnts that love moist soil.

Вy sticking accurate tо the formula and finԁing aррrоасhеѕ to implement it into уour gгowing garԁеn, уou could ensure that eаch season is more wonderful than the lаst. You no longer neеԁ to be born with a grееn thumb once you сan fоllow these guidelines and merely grow 1 right on your hand!

For plenty of of us, gardening is more than something we do merely to make our property or our prope

For plenty of of us, gardening is more than something we do merely to make our property or our property look more appealing. It may be an perfect method to lower our stress levels and get a lot of exercise while breathing in fresh air & getting in touch with nature.

When planning your first garden start modest. A number of people attempt to do too much when they first start planning. They don’t realise all the work that goes into a garden and so they get in over their head. Start with no larger than a one hundred square foot plot, and your garden will have a far better chance of succeeding.

A remarkable tip to give consideration to when gardening is the fact that if you are going to rely on a compost pile, give it at least a year to turn into fertilizer. This is critical so that you could plan accordingly for how much fertilizer you’ll need to purchase this current year.

Hold off having a pond inside your garden till your children are older. A pond, no matter how shallow, could be rather hazardous for small kids. Should you begin with a sunken sandpit for your toddlers to play in, you can simply convert it into a garden pond when they are older. Just line the vicinity with a rubber pond liner or use a preformed pond.

Prevent over watering your garden plants. Should you saturate the soil, it ends up being a haven for fungus that may negatively impact your plants. You also risk root rot when your soil is too wet. Water till the soil is wet, although not saturated, and check daily to see how much water you will need to add.

In case you like to start your seeds indoors before the 1st signs of spring are in the air, prevent employing seed starter pods and plant in a bigger container to start. Working with a bigger container with plenty of soil for your seed will give the plant a real chance to grow without you having to transplant it many occasions before it can go outside.

You can simply make a homemade yeast trap to captivate the slugs within your garden. Just use about half a teaspoon of baking yeast, a teaspoon of sugar, and water. Fill a glass jar with the mixture & put it in the ground, flush with the earth. Slugs will enter the glass jars, & eventually drown.

Seeds take a lot more time & effort to grow than nursery transplants. That being said, planting seeds is much more affordable and gives a higher sense of satisfaction to see something basically grow from seed. Difficult to grow plants or perennials are best bought from a nursery. This really is a excellent way to have a ready-made garden!

Highlight:

There are a huge number of shade alternatives on the market. Shade sails provide one of the most elegant shade solutions. The American public seem to have really taken to the shade sail as a must-have style accessory where they are know as sun shades or shade sail ideas – Some Thoughts.

Should you, like quite a few men and women, have identified gardening to be a relaxing, enjoyable hobby, we hope the contents of this write-up have already been helpful to you as you seek to further develop your green thumb. By applying the suggestions mentioned above, you may find yourself enjoying your gardening even more!

The Situation I have quite a large garden filled with all kinds of perennials but I live in a Hardin

The Situation

I have quite a large garden filled with all kinds of perennials but I live in a Hardiness Zone 3 Garden area. Not only does that limit the choices of plants that can survive but I also have to deal with diverse unpredictable weather including early frost in the Fall, late frost in the Spring, hail, wind, too much rain and not enough rain depending on the season. When I stick something in the ground I am just happy to see it grow. I call it ‘leap of faith’ gardening.

The Problem

While I was away for a month we had a very rainy summer so far and my husband was great at maintaining the garden. My garden actually looked quite awesome when I returned! But two days before I came home a wind storm swept through the area and did some damage to my tall growing delphiniums. Some of the tall stalks had been snapped and collapsed to the ground. It was a shame because they were blooming so nicely.

The Solution

I tried to salvage what was left of the plants. I cut off the damaged stalks and made them into a simple bouquet, which is now sitting on the front step. It was tricky to find a tall and strong enough vase that wasn’t glass. This is just a plastic decanter that I use as a watering jug for my indoor plants. To hide the handle I just tied a white ribbon around the decanter and secured it with a double bow. While doing this it gave me an idea for supporting the delphiniums in the back garden!

Since these plants were very tall with quite beautiful but heavy stalks of blooms, I needed to create a very sturdy support system so the plants could continue to thrive the rest of the blooming and growing season. Always wanting to make use of what is already in the house, I came up with the idea of using wide ribbon that I use in my craft projects. The wired ribbon I used was 4 cm (1 ½ inch) wide and made of nylon and polyester so with the width, the extra wire and the fabric contents, it was a very strong choice. I also liked that the softer fabric didn’t cut into the plant, looked a lot nicer than gardening twine, is weather resistant, is reusable from year to year and it was really easy to work with. To create extra support I just tied the ribbon to the fence behind the plants, which you can’t really see when looking at the front of the garden. These plants now stand nice and tall and are quite stunning!

I used translucent green with gold trim ribbon on this 183 cm (six feet) tall white delphinium. You can hardly see the ribbon because the green colour blends in with the green stems.

I used white ribbon with silver detailing on this purple and white delphinium. I really like how it creates a nice contrast against the green stems.

I now am supporting all of my tall perennials in the garden with ribbon! I am keeping an eye out for sales on different colours of ribbon so I am organized for next year’s growing season!

What a quick and pretty way to fix a little problem in the garden!

What is happening now because our climate is changing here, our zone that we have been has changed b

What is happening now because our climate is changing here, our zone that we have been has changed because of the microclimate, global warming and more houses, cars and carbon dioxide. Plants that were at one time not hardy here through the winter are, from the zone south of us. Also things that used to like our climate here in the summer time, when the heat gets really bad, no longer like it. So what people are doing now is buying plants under the category of “Subtropicals”. These plants are used to being in a hotter climate and they don’t peter out in the middle of summer.

All of these plants have to be started from cuttings because they are tropicals. They don’t seed themselves very well. You can find them at nurseries or very good flower and flower shops, like Valley Forge Flowers! David, a very knowledgeable horticulturist at VFF, showed some examples of these plants.

Any of the subtropicals can be used indoors and used as house plants. Here is David’s list!

Dragon Wing Begonia, It loves the heat. Can live in the sun or shade.

Ruellia, adds a beautiful blue to your outdoors. Just like the Dragon Wing, it can also take shade.

Angelina, it is a relative of the Snap Dragon. The Snap Dragon loves cool weather and the Angelina thrives in the heat. It seems like no matter how high the numbers reach, this plant thrives.

Lochroma, It is in the nightshade family and has a long trumpet bloom.

Flowering Maple, Traditionally a house plant but loves to be outdoors in the summer.

Plumbago, One of the few “True Blue” flowers. Blue is a hard color to find in a flower.

I love to listen to the gentle sound of falling water as I relax on my patio. While I would love to have (and do plan on building at some point in time) a garden pond complete with a waterfall, fish and blooming plants that will have to wait.

Imagine relaxing with your morning coffee or an evening glass of wine…….

In the meantime, I am content to have my patio fountain. You can bring the same to your backyard as well. My fountain attracts bees (no one has been stung in 4 years!), butterflies and birds looking for a sip. It has attracted kids and dogs looking for drinks, but that practice has been highly discouraged….

A relaxing fountain

You can create a relaxing water feature on your patio quickly and easily with the help of Home and Garden Welcome.

The simplest way to add a water feature is to purchase one of our complete water fountains. As the saying goes, just add water! For a little extra ‘rustic’ appeal allow moss to grow along the edges of your fountain.

Your Fountain is Here!

Add moss for a rustic look.

Looking for something more substantial? You can create a container pond in just a single afternoon!

Start with an urn or planter that fits your decor. You want to make sure this vessel is deep enough to allow you to completely submerge your pump. At this point you have a few options :

You can add another utilitarian bucket to your pond to act as support for a wire mesh, feed your fountain head through the mesh and place your pump in the inner bucket, lay rocks on the mesh to allow water to flow through and back down into your custom made reservoir.

Images from www.shelterness.com Thank You!

If instead you would like to have a more lush look with plants in your fountain the process will be similar, but you will want a larger bowl. You want it deep enough to submerge your planting baskets and wide enough to hold the baskets your plants are growing in. The result can be very striking!

Urns with a deep bowl shape like this are perfectly suited to holding a patio fountain with plants.

Finally, you can take things a step further if you wish and create a self-containing pond right on your deck or patio! Using pavers, cobblestone, brick, even rocks you find in your yard you can build a retaining structure, line it using a high quality membrane, add a pump, filter, plants, even FISH! All without digging.

All the supplies you need to create your own custom backyard water feature are available at Home and Garden Welcome. Whether you are looking to create a free standing patio fountain, or build a free standing pond complete with plants and fish we have what you need.

A fаntastіc tip to think about when gаrԁening is the benefit that creating your own cоmрost ріle will provide.

Remember as a kid when your parents or teachers used to tell you to, “Plant your seat!” when they wanted you to sit? This project gives a whole new meaning to the phrase. This chair is now on its third incarnation. You might remember from an earlier post that this chair has already been broken to bits and put back together once. Since the back on it was kind of weak anyway, this seemed like the perfect final project for this old gal.

To begin the conversion from chair to planter I drilled holes in the seat for drainage. I cut and attached 3/4″ X 1 1/2″ scraps from some frames I had made to create a box to hold the soil on top of the seat. After I painted those out to match the rest of the chair it was as easy as filling it with soil and planting with succulent cuttings. Here is the final product.

Hope you enjoyed. As always, if you have any questions on how I did this or need advice on making your own, just holler! Thanks for reading and remember, today’s ideas become tomorrow realities.

At the start of the year i put this post up about how to grow a garden in a small space. Since then my garden has been hit with the cold months of Victoria and I have to replant. Has anyone got any suggestions for different plants that would do well in winter?

Growing Veggies, flowers and Herbs in your small down town apartment can be easy and cheap. Best of all, you don’t need much space.
There’s a few simple rules to follow and there’s alway a creative way to do them. I have a few photos of what I have done with my small space, and some recycled goods.

To start of with, it’s good to do a little research on what it is you want to grow. If it’s the right season to grow them, and how much light and water do they need, and do you have?
I have a small balcony with plenty of sunshine and rain, perfect for a few small veggies and herbs for the kitchen. It’s important to realise your budget. You can save money by planting from seeds, but it is a lot harder and takes a lot longer. If you are into Organic food, it’s important to source organic seedlings or seeds. Only use organic potting mixtures and fertilisers. Usually it’s the more expensive option, like anything decent in this world.

Another good way to save a little is by using old, unused items to plant in. If you go and buy a pot from the hardware store, it can add up to a lot of money. Theres plenty of things you can pick up for a $1 down at a second hand store. e.g… pots, tea pots, buckets, chest, bins and ect. you can see in my photo’s what i have found and converted into a perfect plant box or pot. A few key things to look for, is something thats not going to break down to quickly, you must be able to drill drainage holes in the bottom and is big enough for the plant you have decided to grow.

an old chest i found for a few dollars, perfect for veggies!

Drainage is very important, so when you find something suitable for planting, drill a few 10mm holes in the bottom, then put a 20mm layer of small pebbles in the bottom. This will help drain the water quickly and stop the dirt from coming out the bottom and blocking your drainage holes. another method i like to use, is put hay in the bottom of your pot. You don’t want pools of water in the pot because that will lead to mould and rotting of the roots of your plant.
Once the drain holes are in and the pebbles are in place, you are ready to fill with potting mixture.

next step is to plant you seedling’s into the pot. When you transfer a plant from it’s original pot, to your new pot, be careful not to damage the roots. Tease the root’s a little bit. and put straight into the new pot. Once in, water well.
Make sure you do your research on the plant you are growing, you need to have the right amount of sun/shade and water. And make sure you know how big your plant will grow!

If you take care of your plants, you will be rewarded with fresh veggies, fresh herbs and colourful flowers. Best of all, they do save you money in the long run (if you go about it the right way at the start).

It Rained and it’s gonna rain again tonight! I dug down into the dirt in the garden this evening and it was moist down over 2″. I don’t know how much rain we got last night, but the lightning show was terrific.

I am proud to finally say that the Blue Lake Green Beans are blooming.
I am so looking forward to canning some green beans this year. Three years ago I canned 52 pints. The past 2 years I’ve grown Purple Hull Peas along with the Green Beans. The Peas produced like crazy and the Green Beans hardly produced at all. My guess is that the insects that pollinate the Beans were too busy pollinating the Purple Hull Peas; they must be sweeter or something. Last year the bees, bumble bees, wasps, hornets, dirt dobbers,..well anything with wings, were all over the Purple Hull Peas but not the beans. This year there are NO peas in the garden.

Here’s a couple of fruitful plant pictures.

Spring is here and gardening season is upon us. You are really excited to get out there and start gardening or are planning to hire a landscaper to set up your garden for you. Before you decide on landscaping there are a few questions you need to ask yourself so that your landscaping will be exactly as you pictured it.

Here are our top 10 questions to ask yourself:

1) What part of your landscaping do you love and what part do you hate? Are there other members of your family that will be using the area in question and if so, what will it be used for?

2) Do you have pets? If you do how will that affect the look you are trying to achieve? Do you need a dog run or just a place for your pet to lounge and enjoy the outside?

3) Now take a step back and look at your home. In what style was it built? Do you want that style to be reflected in the landscaping or do you prefer a style that will compliment it rather than duplicate it?

4) What is your landscaping style of choice? Do you love the formal or English garden look? Are you a fan of Japanese or Natural? Look through magazines and clip pictures of the look you would like to incorporate in your landscaping.

5) Now thinking of color scheme. Do you prefer landscaping that is full of bright, vibrant colors or a more uniformed landscaped design of one or two colors. Would you like more greenery with touches of colored flowering plants or more flowering plants and a touch of greenery?

6) Allergies! This is not generally thought of when landscaping but if you or a family member has, for instance, severe allergies to bees you will want to try to choose plants that are less attractive to bees.

7) Hardscaping or paving surfaces, would you like to incorporate a patio, deck or walkway in your landscape design? What is your surface of preference? Wood? Concrete? Stone? Brick?

8) When thinking of plants, do you want to try and attract birds, butterflies or any other type of “wildlife”?

9) What about your neighbors? Do you need privacy or a division between properties? Don’t forget to take any neighborly issues into consideration when planning your landscaping.

10) The very last thing that should not be overlooked when planning your landscaping is zoning regulations. For instance if you are planning on building a deck you may need a permit. If you are planning on putting in a parking pad, a permit is usually required. Take your time to research this. If contracting a professional landscaper have them look into any permits required.

Yesterday morning I felt industrious and built up the dirt around the potato plants; all 55 of them.

Yesterday morning I felt industrious and built up the dirt around the potato plants; all 55 of them. Oh MY! I’ve never planted this many and thank goodness I LOVE TO CAN. I read that covering half of a 6″ tall potato plant helps it become stronger and gives the potatoes some looser soil to grow it. I’ll repeat this process again when the potatoes grow a bit taller. I did this last year and it worked well and made it easier to dig up the potatoes.
I used my favorite garden tool to pull the soil up from both sides, my metal leaf rake. I love the fact that it has a wide swath and with my sandy soil it is easy to use for raking the soil. It also picks up the loose dead pieces of Bermuda grass that are along the top of the soil.

The carrot seeds I planted have yet to make any sort of appearence. The package said “guaranteed to grow”, well we shall see; if not I’m sending for my money back. I paid over $3 for the package.

On another note your have to forgive the lack of post as of late. My father just had a new knee replacement last week and I’ve been busy working and going to the hospital…now going to Rehab. My Dad’s Dr announced him “amazing” after his heart valve surgery last Sept. and with this one he just shook his head and smiled. My Dad is 84 and a very active man. He will be helping me till the garden when he gets his strength back.

Later this week the planting signs will be right for above ground planting and I will be planting the corn and green beans.

By the way…Here’s a picture of my new toy.

A Craftsman Mini Tiller. I just LOVE it. Though it is a bit harder to handle than my Dad’s big one. I am sure with practice I will get better a handling it. Any suggestions?? Right now I can get it to skip along the top of the ground or dig in the soil about 4″ and then I have to pull it out. Slightly annoying.

In a previous post “Work and Gardening don’t mix sometimes” I mentioned the plastic pickle bucket rings we put around our tomato plants.
“To make plastic circles you cut a plastic pickle bucket in half and cut out the bottom; giving you 2 circles. You place one circle around each plant pushing it into the dirt. This plastic circle allows water to gather around the plant watering the roots instead of just draining away. These come in handy during the summer months when you have to water your plants. At the end of the season save the circles and use them next year. ”
Anyway..Here’s the picture I promised to post.

JUST SHARING
Here is just the coolest idea from Kara at Kalio Chic.

“I also wanted up give a little recap and update on my celery plant growth and sweet potato slip growing. First for the celery, the plant has been in ground for a little over two weeks and is growing great. See below for the two week growth photo. The baby celery stalks are emerging quite nicely. I have had several questions regarding planting your own celery, so I just wanted to recap for some of you what I did. I brought my celery home from the store and cut the tops off leaving about 2-3 inches from the base. Then I took the base outside and planted it in my garden. I just planted it about an inch deep in the soil, but I think that you can plant the entire base and leave the top level with the soil. The prefered temperature for prime celery growth is 65-75 degree’s F. It can tolerate full to partial sun and they like lots of water. In a few months you should have your new celery stalks ready to cut and eat. You can also just cut of the stalks of the celery as you need them leaving the rest of the stalks to continue growing.”

Check out the whole article and learn how to re-use other vegies and see a picture of the celery.

4-18-12 Here’s a picture of mine in the kitchen window three days after I put it in water. The center has grown considerably. I swear it’s taller than it was this morning.

Now that warmer temperatures are creeping into Central Oregon this week, you may be thinking about your garden layouts for the coming growing season. Here is a themed bed plan that allows you to grow everything you might need Latin inspired cuisine or you can make your own salsa using fresh ingredients. Plant yours with two tomato varieties, or try tomatillos for a tangy salsa verde. Onions, garlic, cilantro, and peppers round out the sweet and spicy Latin flavors from this planting plan.

Planting the 4 x 4-foot Bed

Take inspiration from these planting options but don’t feel constrained by them. The plan allows for some interpretation depending on your taste. These plants are pictured small to make the illustration simpler, but your bed will be spilling over as the plants grow!

A year on and we’ve added and improved the www.rightplants4me.co.uk website.

It’s easy to find and identify garden plants as well as wildflowers and weeds.

Simply select plants by their name, flower and or leaf colour, period of interest, height, aspect and soil type.

You can nor make plants lists. (1) Plants I Have and (2) Plants I want

This is useful when designing your garden to have year round colour and interest.

You can print your plants I want lists and take it with you to the Garden Centre.

Plants I have shows you which plants you have in any chosen month AND it will also let you know which plants you have in any month that need pruning PLUS how to prune them correctly.

You can add your own personal note to any plant. I don’t like labels so I keep a record of my plants and where they are in the garden. This is very useful because for example Clematis look very similar when dormant, with my notes and reminder when to prune my plants I know exactly which Clematis needs pruning, where it is and how to prune it. Some need hard pruning becuase they flower on this years new growth whereas some flower on old wood.

Here is an Iris with a note added

I’ve added time lapses of plants growing and flowers opening. They show some of the fascinating growth and design.

I hope you fine the site useful.

I want to build the site so I’m keen to meet photographers and authors to help the site GROW.

Although the site has UK flowering and planting times, it won’t take too much work to make it specific for the US and European countries. Please let me know if this is of interest.

Best wishes

We’ve joined a community garden group and although we are still in the works to get the city to allow us to use certain pieces of land, we’ve started to brainstorm gardening ideas through Pinterest. A community garden is a great way for old and new community members to come together and spend time doing a productive and fun activity. Here are some ideas we love that we think will get people excited about ways to be different and creative with their space. We also think that with ideas such as these, they can double as public art and promote the garden! Has anyone ever tried any of these ideas yet?
