Varför blir man aldrig nöjd?

What a fantastic question. Every city needs to ask themselves this—some more than others. I wish I could lay claim to posing the question in the first place but instead, it was this insightful fellow. In the post, Your Civic Ambition, Aaron Renn says he would like Louisville, Kentucky to follow through with the 8664 plan. I wasn’t familiar with this citizen-led grassroots initiative until today but it’s now etched in my mind as one of the more powerful community efforts to make cities and developers rethink their often thoughtless plans.

Anyone familiar with the Gardiner Expressway and the regretful waterfront development decisons made by Toronto will want to know about this.

After 4 years of community outcry and the support of over 10,000 citizens, I think Kentucky’s civic aspiration to “86″ this silly plan stands a very good chance of being realized. Even better, it would be replaced with this much smarter plan.

It also gives me great hope for similar efforts in my own city of Burlington.

Next post? Unemployed doesn’t mean uninvolved. I sit on the Steering Committee of Burlington Save Our Waterfront. I’ll tell you about our civic aspirations and what we’re doing to make them a reality.

Last week the Electric Peak Art Council brought a Creole band to the Gardiner School. About 100 people were there to listen to the trio. Gardiner was a hard audience to please at first but as various fiddle tunes crooned to the crowd, the audience started clapping and jostling their legs to the music. Brian and I got up and danced to the waltzes and two-steps, which is when I noticed her….

In the row in front of ours, a little girl, 4-6 years old in a dress and long neatly brushed hair, sat staring at us with wide-eyes. She would occasionally look around the room before returning her eyes to watch B and me dance (or watch us sit and slap our knees to the music). Brian looked at me and said, “It’s your red lipstick!” It might have been.

At intermission, her mom came up and said, “I’m sorry, that’s my daughter who is staring at you. We live in a town of 50 people so coming to Gardiner is always a big show. She never sees this many people!” I smiled at the mom and glanced at her wide-eyed girl, who was still soaking everything in.

This event made me wonder at how our perspectives change overtime. This girl came to Gardiner, a town of 800 people, and experienced a life- (or moment-) changing event as she listened to French Creole music and drank in the sight of people dancing, leg-shaking, laughing, and lips covered with red lipstick. What will her next life changing event be?! I hope they may each be as sweet as that night in Gardiner.

Future Considerations has looked at the top five draft prospects as well as some of the draft eligib

Future Considerations has looked at the top five draft prospects as well as some of the draft eligible talent the CHL has to offer for 2010 in part I and part II of this introduction series to the NHL Entry Draft. In part III, FC will move south of the 49th parallel and take a look at who is making noise in the United States.

Many of today’s prospects view NCAA hockey as a viable alternative to the more traditional CHL route while NHL clubs begin to value the flexibility of a four or even five year signing window over the two years given to CHL and European prospects under the current CBA. There are always a few talented prospects who we see ply their trade in the USHL or high school leagues throughout the States during their draft years while using these leagues as a launching point to retain their NCAA eligibility.

This season, the cream of the crop includes former Saskatchewan Junior Hockey Leaguer and Notre Dame Hound centre Jaden Schwartz who is suiting up for the Tri-City Storm of the USHL and is looking like a possible first rounder next June.

The speedy Colorado College recruit was named the SJHL Rookie Of The Year in 2008-09 after a productive year offensively and he is looking to do a similar feat in the USHL this season. Schwartz was able to display his incredible ability of getting to open ice for getting the best scoring opportunity as well as possessing a nice set of hands.

In August, Schwartz also played a part in helping the Canadian U18 team capture Gold at the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Tournament in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

Also playing in the Ivan Hlinka tournament was USHL’s Chicago Steel defender Kevin Lind, who suited up for the US squad that played to a disappointing fourth place finish. Lind is a big two-way defender who has a good first pass and is willing to join the rush when the opportunity presents itself.

His head coach with Chicago, Steven Poapst, offered these comments on Lind.

“Kevin has grown a lot since joining the Steel last season. He has become a leader on and off the ice possessing the qualities that you look for in a captain. He has gotten bigger and stronger and has matured as a person and a player allowing him to become the team leader that he is. He has size, strength and an element of toughness to his game. He is a strong skater and handles the puck well. He is very good one on one against his opponents using his very well and is extremely good at eliminating his opponents in the corners and along the boards.”

Lind will garner more playing time this year with Chicago and should have a pretty solid development year. He is scheduled to attend the University of Notre Dame in 2010.

Des Moines of the USHL could be a real hot spot for scouts this winter as they have a potential power forward in the making in their lineup.

Winger Yasin Cisse is a big winger that is willing to play in dirty areas, crash the net, finish checks and he also skates well too. Cisse has committed to Boston University for the fall of 2010.

While his offensive skills are just coming to the forefront this season, he has solid skills to cultivate and could surprise many with his production this season.

Cisse is a hard working power forward, a hard hitter that showed willingness to battle along the wall and has the hands to finish off plays. The Westmount, PQ. native has decided to attend Boston University instead of joining Lewiston of the QMJHL, who drafted him in the second round of the Quebec League draft back in 2008.

Cedar Rapids forward Michael Parks is a potential riser as the season progresses. He has average size, isn’t the best skater but his undeniable strength is creating offense. Parks has a nice set of hands and makes electrifying moves with the puck in one-on-one situations and also in tight around the net.

The O’Fallon, MO. native has vision and offensive creativity that are both natural abilities you can not teach. Parks is not only a one trick pony as he is an able two-way threat that consistently plays in all three zones. He had a good showing as well for the US squad at this past summers U18 Hlinka tournament in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

Youngstown Phantoms power forward Nick Czinder has the size that will have scouts purchasing a plane ticket early and often. The native of West Bloomfield, MI. is just over six-foot-five and has the skill set to compliment his size. Czinder is off to a good start this year and has shown that he not only has soft hands but that he is intelligent on the ice and willing to play a two-way game.

Indiana Ice blueliner and USNTDP graduate Nick Mattson is one of the better USHL defensemen with pro potential this season. Mattson is spending a year with the Ice after graduating from the US National Team Program U18 program before heading off to North Dakota.

He has a very good overall game with no glaring weaknesses at this stage of his development. Defensively Mattson holds solid positioning, possesses good foot work and maintains solid gap control. Offensively he has more to offer than he has shown thus far. His outlet passes are strong and he can see the ice well.

Omaha Lancer defenseman Mathieu Brisson has the raw abilities to dominate offensively from the backend during his first year of USHL play. The slick skating defender plays a solid game that marries good puck skills with decent defensive positioning although he is still very raw and needs work on the defensive side.

The Cornell Recruit and native of Quebec has good vision, soft hands and makes solid outlet passes along with having some outstanding natural creativity.

One of the top USHL goalies this season comes from Perth, ON. and is committed to Northern Michigan for next year.

Lincoln Stars netminder Jared Coreau has the size and quickness that has been the NHL cookie cutter goaltender mold the past few drafts. At over six-foot-four and almost 200-pounds, he covers a lot of net naturally but also possesses quick reflexes.

Coreau is able to control his rebounds and never gives up on a play, sometimes coming up with breathtaking stops. However, he must work on his angles play more as he has a tendency to slink back into his crease and rely more on his size to bail him out.

One of the top U.S. NCAA prospects looks to be Centennial high school alumni Tyler Pitlick, who has the potential to develop into a future power forward at the pro ranks.
The Minnesota State freshman, whose uncle Lance is a former journeyman NHLer with stops in Ottawa and Florida, has good size and hands that make him dangerous around the net.

Pitlick’s shot is a major asset and will only get better once he adds some extra strength to his six-foot-three 190-pound frame. Strength is not the only area of his game that will need to be addresses during his time with the Mavericks as his defensive game and awareness currently have many holes that need to be filled before turning pro.

Former St. Catharines Falcon centre and current University of Notre Dame freshman, Riley Sheahan, is another top end NCAA prospect for the 2010 NHL Draft.

Sheahan is a highly skilled offensive forward who skates well and also has the size and strength to play a physical role with for Irish. He is expected to be a top six forward and get considerable playing time in his first collegiate season.

The Harvard Crimson of the ECAC should have real strong locker room camaraderie this season not only because the team is a tight bunch but more importantly because they have the rarity of three brothers suiting up together this season.

Freshman defenseman Danny Biega will join his brothers Alex and Michael on the Crimson and should be able to play quality minutes on the backend. The smooth skating rearguard has solid leadership qualities to go along with an impressive two-way game. Biega carries the puck with poise and has the distribution skills and vision to make plays from the backend. Defensively he displays nice gap control, plays his angles well and possesses the ability to separate the puck from an attacker and make it look effortless.

High school talent on the rise in the US

Some of the best US born prospects the past few years started out as little known high school players hidden away from the limelight and those who did not get as much exposure. This has changed some recently with the success these prospects have maintained and now the Minnesota and Eastern U.S. High School circuit is a must when putting together a list of potential draftees for NHL scouts and scouting agencies alike.

Blaine High School forward Nick Bjugstad has the size, speed and skill that many NHL teams will covet although some added strength is needed which is the case with most 17-year-old draft prospects. The six-foot-five forward is one of the most impressive Minnesota high schoolers available for 2010 as he plays the game not only with the ability to score goals and set-up plays but he is also defensively responsible in his own end.

Physical play and utilization of his size is also an area that Bjugstad will need improvement although he does play physical intermittently. His hockey smarts also set him apart from the average Minnesota high schooler as he is a very sharp guy both on and off the ice. He is a prospect that could see his stock rise into first round talk because of all the positives to his game and potential he holds despite is considerable rawness.

Cretin-Derham Hall in St. Paul MN. has one of the best 2010 draft eligible high school defensemen in senior Mark Alt. His father John was an offensive lineman for the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs and has blessed his son with both outstanding size and athleticism.

His game is solid in both ends and he uses his size and range very well. The University of Minnesota recruit is very agile for such a big body, over six-foot-four and 200-pounds, which is why he is also a very good quarterback for the schools football team.

Just as his brother Jake, a first round pick of the Anaheim Ducks, Max Gardiner is looking to be the next high NHL draft pick taken out of Minnetonka High School. The Minnesota recruit is a winger with good size at six-foot-three and has some good offensive skills but is not as explosive as his brother on his skates. He is a hard working winger who has some good playmaking abilities.

Mahtomedi offensive defensman Ben Marshall looks like the 2010 version of Nashville Predators prospect and former first rounder Ryan Ellis; a defensman who has boat loads of skills but lacks the size to play a real physical style on the backend.

The smooth skating Marshall is a danger to make a play every time he touches the puck. The Minnesota committed blueliner can just as easily go end-to-end as make a slick pass that opens a chance up for a teammate. Marshall’s size and strength will need to improve for him to get first round consideration.

Over in Massachusetts, Toronto Maple Leafs draft pick and current Boston College Eagle Jimmy Hayes’ younger brother Kevin Hayes is making some noise as a big body who has the ability to fill the net.

The Nobles Bulldog winger stands at six-foot-three and has the strength behind the height weighing just over 200-pounds. Hayes looks to have the potential to develop into a skilled power forward after joining his brother at Boston College for a couple years of seasoning.

USNTDP looks to have strong crop of talent this year

As most have probably noticed already, the USNTDP is playing in the USHL this season, as well as some college games and the programs staple international tournaments. That means that instead of piling up the frequent flyer cards NHL scouts will be able to see the best of what the USA has to offer in a more structured environment. The U.S. National Development Team looks to have a very skilled squad this year and should draw much attention from NHL teams as they potentially tear up the competition.

The top offensive forward on the team looks to be Paradise Valley, AZ. native Luke Moffatt. The skilled centre is extremely talented, skates well and is very coachable. He has good hands, is a smart player and possesses the vision needed to be an impact offensive contributor for the US Squad. Consistency is the one area that needs to improve, game in and game out, for an NHL team to show interest in him as more than just a mid-to-late round pick by next June.

Boston College recruit and power winger Billy Arnold should move up the draft lists as the season progresses as he has the skill and willingness to be a difference maker. He is a heart and soul type of player.

His skill set allows him to play both the role of a scoring forward as well as the mucking grind-it-out type of winger along the wall as his work ethic is unquestionable. The Needham, MA. native will need to improve conditioning and continue to refine his offensive abilites as the season progresses.

The USNTDP has a stellar defense corps this season with four potential first round candidates.

Ex-Duluth East Greyhound defenseman Derek Forbort bypassed his senior year to move on to the United States Development Program this year.

He plays a very complete game from the backend and possesses the prototypical size that all NHL are looking for. He has the ability to make everything looks easy on the ice. Forbort is a two-way defender who has a nice blend of vision, puck distribution skills and strong overall instincts. He plays the point well and usually make strong reads on when to pinch but needs work on his defensive angles and foot speed. He also needs to add more of a physical game and more strength.

His previous coach at Duluth East sounded like sour grapes when Forbort made his decision to leave, which tells you just the kind of player he is.

Highly regarded Jon Merrill is another of the defenders for Team USA U18. He also has the size at just under six-foot-four and skates very well for that size. He is more of a defense first player who uses his reach, agility and defensive reads to disrupt the opposition’s attack but does have some solid offensive skills.

Merrill also has very strong defensive positioning in his own zone to go with a very good first pass. His offensive skills are not as flashy as some but he does make smart plays in the offensive zone, he just does not try to force anything, though one wouldn’t think that to be the case just by looking at his early season statistics as he is one of the U18 top offensive contributors.

Stephen Johns is a third beast of a defenseman that the US Development Team has on the backend this season. He is six-foot-three and he too skates well for such a big body. His game is at its best when he keeps it simple and plays a physical defense first game. He uses his reach and on-ice smarts to angle off attackers effectively.

The Notre Dame recruit has some offensive potential as he makes solid outlet passes and has a decent point shot but his game is more suited as the shutdown defender type.

Ex-NHL player and former Washington Capital defender Mark Tinordi’s son, Jarred rounds out the four big men on defense for the U.S. National Team Development Program.

The six-foot-four defender is a raw talent who has more upside in the offensive game than the other three but has more of a mean streak. He skates well, has a good point shot and makes smart plays under pressure. Tinordi is the U18 team captain this season which speaks volumes to his leadership abilities. He too is slated to join the Fighting Irish next fall.

The top prospect playing in the U.S. Development Program this season is Port Huron, MI. native and the Under-18 squad’s goaltender Jack Campbell. Campbell really shone bright last April at the IIHF World Under-18 Championships for the gold medal USA squad in Fargo, especial in the gold medal game against an extremely talented Russian squad.

Campbell is not overly big but he plays a flawless butterfly style and is technically strong while maintaining proper angles. He uses his smarts to read and react while maintaining a patient yet aggressive demeanor towards the shooter. He is known to have a quick glove hand that pushes shooters to look elsewhere for open holes.

Campbell also maintains an upright position while going down in the butterfly for maximum net coverage which is a common weakness of developing goaltenders. The Michigan Wolverine recruit has great potential as a pro goaltender and could go very high in the entry draft next June.

The US development leagues have made great strides over the past ten years in an effort to narrow the gap between the Canadian Junior Leagues and their own. NHL draft picks are regularly coming from areas of the US that are traditionally known as out of market like Florida, California and even Texas. This can only be considered a good thing as more exposure to the game and more kids playing the game ultimately mean a better product on the ice in the future.

On Thursdays from 8 AM-12 PM, the five undergraduates studying Egyptology at Johns Hopkins would gather in the Near Eastern Studies room—nicknamed “the Fish Bowl”—of Gilman Library’s basement for four rollicking hours of uninterrupted Middle Egyptian text reading. Presented here, in a fairly regular manner, will be some of my favorites from that class.

When people discover that I was an Egyptology major in college, they ask me why I didn’t continue my formal studies of ancient Egypt. After explaining my solid conviction that I have no desire to spend the rest of my days alternating between the basement of a library and the 115 degree heat of the Giza Plateau, I then add, “Besides which, I never learned German.” Most think this is a joke. It isn’t.

It was largely assumed, when one entered the graduate text reading classes, that the student was fluent in German. This is because those who enter the (insanely rigorous) German academic system not only have to earn a Doctorate, they also have to earn a Professorship – a process that can often take many, many years, most of this time being spent on insanely specific and/or thorough investigations of pretty much any aspect of ancient life one could imagine (I once came across a dictionary of Egyptian nautical terms). Thus, most of the good scholarship in Egyptology comes from Germany.

When a heady, young student first enters an introductory course in Middle Egyptian, he usually start with Raymond Faulkner’s Concise Dictionary of Middle Egyptian, a hand-written, 349 page single-volume work containing 5,400 of the most common words found on monuments, papyri, and stelae (I’m convinced that the only people who use Budge’s dictionary are those who believe the Egyptians were aliens, or those who want Anubis’s name tattooed across their ankle). My favorite Amazon customer reviews on Faulkner’s work are those that complain about the dictionary being handwritten. If somebody wants to build a keyboard containing the more than 1,000 hieroglyphic sign, each found in a variety of sizes and running from left-to-right, right-to-left, bottom-to-top, or top-to-bottom, then they’re more than welcome to do so. In the meantime, we’ll just have to make do with hand-written dictionaries.

As one would imagine, the Egyptian language contains many nuances, including visual puns, religious allusions, and variant spellings, and at a certain point, Faulkner’s book doesn’t quite cut it. That’s where the seven hefty volumes of the Egyptian-to-German Wörterbuch der Aegyptischen Sprache come in.

Obviously, seven volumes of Wörterbuch don’t just sprout out of thin air. Working from 1897, Prof. Adolf Erman and Prof. Hermann Grapow started to work on collecting every instance of every word ever found in the Egyptian language. Erman and Grapow spent 30 years gathering, cataloguing, and organizing over 1.5 million entries, thus producing the dictionary Egyptologists use today. (I believe most of the 1.5 million notes were incinerated when a bomb struck the Berlin Academy during World War 2.)

I have a photocopied version of the Wörterbuch, which I’ve affectionately nicknamed my Wörterbuch of Doom! Below, I’ve posted pages 242-243 of the Wörterbuch’s first volume – the beginning of the quail chick section – or, for those of you currently residing in library basements, Bird Sign G43 of Sir Alan Gardiner’s Sign List. More on that, next time, here at GB,HR’s Matters Archeological &. Egyptological.

Most of this has to be verified, which shouldn’t be too difficult once I get into the Maryland Historical Society. I just have to find the cash and the time to do it (minor technicality). First off are the Dyers. It gets a little messy here since the census papers at this point only the list head-of-household’s name and the number of males and females they have in the house. Either way this is the basis from which to start doing more research.

Jeremiah Dyer + Lucy Odre Smith

born: 1791 King George’s Parish, Prince Georges County, MD

died: 1859 Charles County, MD

Jeremiah Dyer and Lucy Odre Smith were married in 1776 in King George’s Parish, Prince Georges County, MD. Still working on further information when it comes to the Dyers. If you find any discrepancies or have any further information please contact me. And now the Gardiners.

Although I’m not convinced of Ann Boarman being Ignatius’s wife. However, I will list the children as the line up from here is pretty clear.

Ignatius Gardiner + (possibly Ann Boarman)

Ignatius Gardiner

born: 1755 Charles County, MD

died: 8 Oct 1839 Prince Georges County, MD

parents: Ignatius Gardiner and (possibly Anne Edelen)

Ignatius + (possibly Ann Boarman’s) Children

Ignatius Walter Gardiner

born: 1788 Charles County, MD

died: 1863 unknown location

married: Elizabeth Smith 1812 unknown location

George Squire Gardiner

born: 1788 Charles County, MD

died: 21 Sep 1873 Waldorf, Charles County, MD

Slyvester Francis Gardiner

born: 1790 Charles County, MD

died: 1868 Charles County, MD

married: Mary Hardy 27 Oct 1812 unknown location; Mary Coomes 3 Jun 1830 unknown location

Esther Henrietta Gardiner*

Elizabeth Gardiner

born: Jan 1793 Charles County, MD

died: 5 Aug 1852 Waldorf, Charles County, MD

married: Benjamin Notley Mudd 13 Nov 1827 Prince Georges County, MD

Aloysius Gardiner

born: 1794 Charles County, MD

died: 1826 Prince Georges County, MD

Isadore Theodore Gardiner

born: 9 Jul 1795 Charles County, MD

died: 20 Oct 1837 St. Mary’s County, MD

married: Harriet Mudd 14 Jan 1822 Upper Marlboro, Prince Georges County, MD

Now I really do need to look into this further because the birthdates for their children are really close together. What I do find interesting is that the Mudd last name came up again. This is also a last name that appears very often with the Heisserer and Wommack family in Missouri. Gotta love when a little light bulb goes off in your head!

As per the norm, you can find info on those with a * in Level 7: Great(x4) Grandparents Dyer.

I don’t have much information on Elizabeth Amelia so I can really only cover the Dyer couple.

I don’t have much information on Elizabeth Amelia so I can really only cover the Dyer couple. There is one major discrepancy that I keep running into and that is Ann Boarman as Esther Gardiner’s mother. I have to get to the Maryland Historical Society to check the rest of Dyer paperwork. However, here’s what I’ve got on em!

Theodore Dyer + Esther Henrietta Gardiner

Theodore Dyer

born: 2 Mar 1790 King George’s Parish, MD

died: 19 Oct 1823 Waldorf, Charles County, MD

parents: Jeremiah Dyer and Lucy Odre Smith

Esther Henrietta Gardiner

born: 1791 Charles County, MD

died: 1823 unknown location

parents: Ignatius Gardiner and possibly Ann Boarman

Theodore + Esther’s Children

George Ignatius Dyer

born: 10 Jan 1814 Charles County, MD

died: 20 Aug 1885 Lincoln County, MD

married: Elizabeth Amelia 3 Nov 1840 Charles County, MD

Elizabeth Ellen Dyer

born: 8 Jan 1816 Charles County, MD

died: 21 Aug 1855 unknown location

married: Henry Tomas Mudd 12 Jan 1837 Charles County, MD

Nancy “Lucy Ann” Dyer

born: 10 Oct 1817

died: date and location unknown

Amanda Ann Dyer

born: 7 Jan 1819 MD

died: 1872

married: George W. Gardiner 245 Feb 1840 unknown location

Mary Jane Dyer

born: Feb 1821 unknown location

died: 1852 unknown location

married: Joseph E. Simmons unknown date and location

Now if I can actually prove that Ann Boarman was Esther Gardiner’s mother, that links to a whole slew of significant Marylanders including the second Lord of Baltimore and the first governor of Maryland. Please let me know if you have any other information. Much like my other posts anyone with a * is listed under another post. In this case its listed under Level 6: Great(x3) Grandparents Wommack + Dyer.

Further and further back we go. This will cover the Wommack and Dyer Great Great Great Grandparents.
George Ignatius Dyer + Elizabeth Amelia Unknown

Now I’m still working on digging up more information about this branch. I know that Sophis Ann Dyer had quite a few children and there is a great deal of information on her. However, the rest of the family is a little more difficult. Luckily, the Maryland Historical Society has documents concerning this lineage, so sooner or later I will get there, pay the membership fee, and go to town on all the files. Unfortunately for now, this will have to do. Now on to the Wommacks!

I have more detailed information on all of these Wommacks as Tina sent me her 80 page word document with references to census reports and other clippings. From what she has given me, I’ve only included what is relevant to Captain Dick Wommack and Elizabeth Harriet Hammonds. Please contact me if you are looking for more details. Here is a clipping from the History of Lincoln County by the County Officers of 1888:

“Richard Wommack was born in Halifax County, Virginia, January 10, 1804, and departed this life at his residence in Lincoln County, March 25, 1880. he moved with his parents to Tennessee, where his father died, and from there moved with his mother o this county in October, 1823. He was married three times; first to Miss Cynthia Smiley; in 1831 to Mrs. Harriet Gilmore [Elizabeth Harriet Hammonds]; and in 1873 toMrs. Mary Morris; had 10 children. He held prominent positions in public affairs; was a liberal and public-spirited citizen, and lived an exemplary life. He held the office of assessor two terms, that of sheriff four terms, and that of representative in the Legislature four terms. Of him it can truthfully be said to all the world, with all the language can imply, ‘This was a man.’”

“The father (Richard Wommack) was born in Halifax County, Virginia in 1804, and when two years old was taken to Tennessee. In 1823 he came with his mother to Lincoln County, and two years later he married Miss Cynthia Smiley, who bore him three children. After her death he married, in 1831 Mrs. Elizabeth Gilmore, nee Hammond, and by her became the father of seven children, to sons and five daughters. She was a native of Kentucky butcame to this State in early womanhood, and had one child by a previous marriage. She died in her sixty-fifth year The father then chose for his third wife Mrs. Fanny [Mary] Morris. He was a man of superior ability, and one of influence in his county. He was chosen to represent Lincoln Countyin the Legislature during the following years: 1848, 1856, 1858, 1862 and 1866, served as sheriff four terms, and as assessor two terms. He died in his seventy-sixth year.”

Here is an excerpt from the Silex, MO index originally printed 9 Jan 1917 after the death of H.B. Wommack:

“Hart B. Wommack, M.D. of Millwood was the son of Richard and Elizabeth Hammonds Wommack. The mother of the deceased was the widow of James Gilmore, who died in 1830. He was the father of Judge John T. Gilmore, who died in 1898. Richard Wommack and Mrs. Gilmore were married in 1833.

“The parents of Mrs. Wommack, Thomas and Elizabeth Hammonds, came from Kentucky and first settled on the farm where Phillip Mudd now lives…At the age of seven years his father died. His mother and all the family except his brother William, came with his brother-in-law, Brice Wommack, to this county and settled on a farm near Elsberry.

“The first Mrs. Wommack died in 1830, leaving three girl children. His second wife died in 1873, age 63 years. To these two unions were born a family of 10 children-8 girls and two boys, all dead but three. The father had always been prominent in political affairs, was a liberal and public spirited citizen, was a Jeffersonian Democrat to the core, and openly advocated Jeffersonian principles–not so partisan as not to respect the opinions of others differing with him, consequently he had many warm personal friends in the diferent opposite political parties that sprang up during his time. After his death Judge Henry T. Mudd said to the writer: ‘Dick Wommack was the daddy of the Democratic party of Lincoln County.’…He was a member of the Old School Baptist Church, was well versed in the Bible and always ready to give scriptural authority for his belief. While having decided opinions in religious matters he was not intolerant to those having different ones, and for this reason he had the best of friends in the different religious denominations, not exceptig the Catholics, whose religious views were entirely at variance with his and with whom he lived and mingled the most of his life, whose respect and friendship he enjoyed to the day of his death. He believed in every man’s right to select his own church.”

This is from th Troy Herald Vol II, Troy, Lincoln County, MO 3 May 1876 titled “Recollections of Captain Richard Wommack”

“Capt. Richard Wommack was born in Halifax county, VA in 1804. When two years old his father went to Tennessee and settled near Nashville. in a few years he moved to Sumner County and shortly afterward to Smith County, where he died. Brice Hammack,ho had married the Captain’s sister and came to this county in 18020, and Jos. Sitto, whom came here in 1817, returned to TN in 1823 on a visit. They gave such flattering accounts other new country that the Captain and his brother Hiram were eager to go at once.

“It was some time before his mother could be persuaded to leave her hoe in TN for the wilderness. She finally consented and the party consisting of those named above and Brice Burroughs and Malcolm Smith, started on the 3rd of October 1823. They passed through Troy, MO on Sunday the 22nd of October 823, and camped at Levi Brown’s spring.

“Capt. Wommack settled on a tract now belonging to the heir of the late James F. Moore, built cabin and cleared six acres of ground. he can identify the exact sot, but without a plat does not recollect which section it was on. More than likely it as in section three, possibly on the line of two, township fifty, range two west. Here he remained two years, and in 1826 he went over to the Stout settlement, near his father-in-law Mr Smiley, he having married his first wife August 18, 1825. Shortly afterward he returned to the forks of the Cuivre, built another cabin and cleared another six acres o ground just east of where he first settled.”

Here are excerpts from “History of Millwood and St. Alphonsus Parish”:

pg 8: “In November, 1841, a number of settlers from where Millwood was destined to be, stated to St. Louis with a caravan of wagons drawn by oxen, to market their farm products. These wagons were loaded with dressed chickens, tobacco, butter and other things….The sales of this expedition were so poor that some of the members had to borrow money to come home on…That same year the tax collector of this county, Capt. Richard Wommack, resigned from office because the times were so hard and money so scarce that he couldn’t collect the taxes.”

pg 11: “A famous painter named Maxwell was located in Millwood at the time of the building of Judge Mudd’s second store. He painted the counters of this store in various hues and colors and ornamented them with figures of Indians, cats and dogs. A beautiful sample of his skill was executed on the walls of a house built by Capt.Wommack, which was afterward destroyed by fire.”

pg 17-18: “The Old Log Church. After two years had elapsed and the number of families had increased to about twelve, the priest said to them: ‘Why don’t you build a chapel of your own at some convenient place where all can meet and worship together.’ Thoughthey had no capital to begin with, this suggestion appealed to them and they at once started the selection of a building site. This happened to be the little hill on which the graveyard is located, and was the cause of the graveyard being located there…As the church was to be built entirely with contributed labor, the men assembled from day to day in shifts, hauling the logs with oxen, hewing, notching, and placing them in position…Non-Catholics lent their aid and encouragement. The only money collected was one dollar, given by Captain Richard Wommack, a member of the Baptist faith. His descendants now number a large part of our congregation. In accepting this dollar, the settlers said that it looked to be about the size of a wagon wheel. It purchased all of the nails that were used in the construction of the building.”

A snipet from “With Porter In North Missouri” by Joseph A. Mudd, pg 396:

“Captain Richard Wommack, of Company G, Third Calvary, Missouri State Militia, resigned April 24, 1862. However disappointed were his friends that he chose the Union side, none ever questioned his sincerity of his unselfish patriotism. Of all the public men in Lincoln County he was the most popular. He was a just and honorable man and to the day of his death was respected and esteemed by all good men. He was one of my best friends.”

Most of this information is from Tina, including the listing below detailing his military rank:

“Civil War Service Records
Union Army
3rd Missouri S.M. Calvalry
Company G
Rank Inducted: Captain
Rank Discharged: Captain”

Lastly, here is Captain Dick’s Obituary:

“Editors Free Press: Capt. Richard Wommack, one of our most respected citizens, who had perhaps been more closely identified, and taken a more active interest in the public welfare of Lincoln county for the last fifty years, than any other man that ever lived in our county, died on the 25th inst., in the seventy seventh year of his age. No man has been better known to the people of Lincoln county for the last half century, and done more universally respected, than Richard Wommack.

“He was born in Halifax county Virginia, January 10th, 1804, in 1806 went with his parents to Tennessee where his father died. He then came with his mother and family to this county Oct. 22nd 1823. He was married three times; in 1825 to Miss Cynthia Smiley, in 1831 to Mrs. Elizabeth Gilmore, and in 1874 to Mrs. Mary Morris who survives him; has had thirteen children, eight of whom are still living, all are married and constitute a highly respectable portion of our community, to mourn the loss of a valued and much beloved husband, father and friend.

“Capt. Wommack was twice elected to the office of assessor, four times to the sheriff, and four times to the legislature, as well as appointed to many other minor public trusts, and in all of these important and varied positions in which the people place him, they had an abiding continence in his judgment, honesty, and ability, and were neither deceived, or disappointed in the faithful discharge of the important trusts committed to his management and care.

“Though knowing it was human to err, in his acute judgment of men and things, he was scarcely ever found in the wrong. It may, indeed, be truly said, that better of any of our honored citizens have gone before us, who have played so conspicuous a part among us, or whose memory deserves a more kindly and respectful consideration from the people of Lincoln county than that of Mr. Richard Wommack.

“Through life he was a firm and consistent member of the baptist church, and died full of resignation and hope of a happy eternity, making it one of the last acts of his life, while his strength would admit of it, so read chapters from the bible. Particularly on the afflictions of Job; bearing his own afflictions with Christian resignation, and edification to his children and others around him. It was the melancholy, pleasure of the writer of this little sketch of the life of a good man, to see and converse with him only a few days before his death, witness his complete resignation and bid a final and last farewell to this valued friend.”

I have a line illustration of Captain Dick that Tina sent me, if anyone is interested. As is the usual rule on my posts, anyone who has a (*) next to their name, you can find more information on in another post specifically Level 5: Great Great Grandparents Wommack.

Båda i Wellington, New Zealand.

Helt galet!

*blink**blink*. =o)
