Os dejo un video “curioso” de una de las mejores canciones de uno de los mejores grupos de la historia (por lo menos para mí). Es el video de la canción “The Rocker” de la banda irlandesa “Thin Lizzy”. Digo que es curioso porque es el único que he encontrado con la canción entera y además es en un estudio de televisión en el que los asistentes miran con cara de pasmados al grupo como diciendo “qué coño tocan estos tíos!!!”.

“Thin Lizzy” es una de las bandas más influentes entre los grupos de hard rock y heavy metal como “Metallica”, “Judas Priest”, “Iron Maiden” o “Los Suaves”. Seguramente, muchos conoceréis temas como “The Boys Are Back In Town”, “Cowboy Song”, “Whisky in the Jar” (aunque se trata de una canción típica irlandesa que seguramente hayáis oído por “Metallica”) o “Massacre”, por citar algunos de los muchos que tienen.

El bajista y cantante “Phil Lynott” fue un virtuoso del bajo pero murió en 1986 víctima de las drogas y el alcohol, después de 17 años en la banda. Por la misma han ido pasando numerosos componentes (por ejemplo, “Gary Moore”), y ya no queda ningún miembro originario de la banda.

Que lo disfrutéis.

Ya sabemos el significado de “cosmic blues”, comprendemos que su contenido es positivo, cultural y estamos enterados de que es uno de los mejores programas de radio de blues a nivel nacional. A estas alturas, ya debe ser un hábito encender nuestros estéreos cada domingo en punto de las 19 horas para sintonizar el 89.7 del f.m.

Todo esto se debe gracias a los dos años consecutivos de osadía y trabajo arduo para crear conciencia en nuestra radiofonía en la ciudad de Monterrey y su área metropolitana. Sin embargo, a su vez, esto no hubiera sido posible sin el esfuerzo de su conductor, Chester Draven y, por supuesto, de su productor, Ángel Lozano.

“Dos años” se dice fácil, pero seguramente no lo son. Es por esto que el día de hoy, hago una pequeña mención y una gran felicitación y las buenas vibras a estos dos grandes personajes que han conseguido ganarse nuestra simpatía cada fin de semana durante este grato periodo. Este Domingo 15 es el festejo magno de la segunda celebración del blues en su máxima expresión en nuestra ciudad a través de la frecuencia modulada, y para ello, Chester nos amenazó con arrojar la casa (bueno, la cabina) por la ventana y aseguró prepararnos una sorpresa de locos (por cierto, yo también tengo la mía).

Desgraciadamente y por alguna razón inexplicable, no soy digna de decir que vengo escuchando a los máximos exponentes del blues desde el inicio de la transmisión  dominical, pues apenas llevo alrededor de  medio año recopilando información y descubriendo cuan grande el mundo del blues puede llegar a ser. No obstante, he aprovechado cada emisión a tope, al grado de reunir a los artistas que Chester nos ha regalado a lo largo de los últimos 20 programas (aproximadamente).

No puse fecha y es muy probable que el orden de aparición en esta lista no sea correcto, pido una disculpa, pues perdí la orientación. Además, también es posible la ausencia de algunos músicos mencionados en los últimos seis meses, pero si la idea es hacer una colección con lo relevante del blues, el siguiente catalogo esta en muy buena disposición para lograrlo:

Przyznam, ze zaniedbałem ostatnio mojego bloga. Zaległości zrobiły się naprawdę duże – nie zamieszczałem żadnych wpisów, dotyczących koncertów wrześniowych i październikowych. Nic to – zaległości na bok, powrócę do nich w wolnej chwili. Czas na aktualności.

Gary Moore zagrał na Torwarze 11 listopada – czyli w rocznicę odzyskania niepodległości, a przy okazji – w moje imieniny . Prawie 2 godziny, przekrój przez bluesową część kariery, do tego kilka szlagierów i skok do nowej płyty. Dwa największe przeboje pojawiły się w mocno rozbudowanych wersjach – najpierw, pod koniec swojego show Moore zadedykował Polakom “Still Got The Blues”, a na drugi bis zagrał “Parisienne Walkways”.Było naprawdę dobrze, szczególnie tak od połowy koncertu. Miałem wrażenie, że Gary się rozluźnił a i publika pod koniec wstała z miejsc. Ech, fajnie by się taki koncert oglądało dajmy na to, w Stodole. Bo Torwar zawsze jednak przypomina dużą salę gimnastyczną.

Gary Moore surrounded himself with some fine musicians for this one– Neil Murray (Whitesnake, Black Sabbath), Ian Paice (Deep Purple, Whitesnake) and journeyman keyboardist Don Airey (Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Ozzy, etc, etc, etc…)

This is my second Gary Moore purchase and it isn’t quite as good as Victims of the Future, but it is still an enjoyable listen. Victims of the Future was the follow-up to this one and that album displayed Gary Moore in full-on hard rock guitar hero mode, but this album sees him straddling the line between hard rock (the great opener “Don’t Take Me for a Loser”) and pop (the guilty pleasure slice of cheese balladry that is “Always Gonna Love You”).

My favorite song from this album is “End of the World” which starts off with two minutes of Moore showing of his incredible skills and this hard rocker would have easily fit on Victims of the Future.

This one has been reissued a number of times with varying bonus tracks, most interesting to me is a 2000 reissue with a seven minute version of “Empty Rooms”. Would’ve been nice to have that one instead of three variations of “Falling in Love with You” on one album.

Nei, et annet hvitt hus!

I dag var vi innom “Det Hvite Hus”. – En særdeles oppegående antikvitet og bruktforretning i Vadsø. Da VxPretty foreslo vi skulle stikke innom der etter jobb i dag for å lete etter en hylle, gjorde jeg som jeg som jeg bestandig bruker å gjøre når shopping er inne i bildet: Hjernen setter inn høygiret, for å lete etter muligheter og unnskyldninger til å avlyse eller utsette aktiviteten. Men så kom jeg på at de har brukte plater i sortimentet, så Pretty fikk overraskende positiv respons.

Det er herlig å kjøpe billige plater. Jeg blir som en unge i godtebutikken. Eller som et kvinnfolk på Ikea. Gjør en noen bomkjøp (Noe jeg garantert har gjort) så gjør det ingenting. Det koster nada uansett. Jeg var til og med fristet til å ta med hjem noen gamle Roxettesingler til 5 kr. stykket Til slutt ble det sju album for 150 kr. Blir det “byen” i morgen kommer jeg til å kjøpe enda en Gary Moore skive. Jeg angrer på at jeg ikke tok den nå. Fangsten ble:

Colleen D. Vesper filed a sexual harassment and retaliation lawsuit in Madison County Circuit Court against Illinois Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Foundation (ITBOF) and its president, Gary Moore.

Vesper, who had been working at the ITBOF since 1993, was fired in April 2007 because she allegedly refused to date Moore.  Vesper claims that, beginning in 2006, Moore had repeatedly expressed his desire to be involved romantically with her, but Vesper told Moore each time that she was not interested in an intimate relationship with him.

The lawsuit states that, after having rejected his romantic overtures, “Defendant Moore created a hostile work environment for Plaintiff, sought to degrade, belittle and humiliate her in front of other ITBOF employees, Board Members and members of the foundation who owned or bred thoroughbreds.”

Otis Rush

Dalam musik blues seperti halnya dalam musik jazz, yang mengenal istilah “jazz  standard” dikenal juga istilah “blues standard, ” yaitu lagu-lagu yang menarik untuk dimainkan dan dinterpretasi ulang oleh para pemusik generasi berikutnya Salah satu pemusik blues yang karyanya cukup banyak dimainkan dan diinterpretasi ulang adalah  Otis Rush,  pemusik blues  yang bersama Magic Sam dan Buddy Guy  pada tahun 50 an dikenal sebagai  pembawa aliran West Side Sound.  Karya yang dibawakan oleh Otis  Rush yang kemudian yang sering dibawakan oleh orang lain antara lain “Double Trouble,”  “I Can’t You Baby,” “Gambler Blues,” dan  “All Your Love.”  Lagu “All Your Love”  direkam pertama kali oleh Otis Rush pada tahun 1958, di atas label Cobra dalam piringan hitam 45 Rpm. Lagu ini  pada masa selanjutnya dimainkan dan diinterpretasi ulang oleh  John Mayall (1966),  Gary  Moore ( 1990)  dan Aerosmith ( 2000)

Inilah versi Otis Rush pemusik blues kelahiran tahun 1933 yang pada tahun 2004 harus istirahat bermain blues karena terserang stroke.

Dan pada tahun 1966 John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers dengan gitarisnya Eric Clapton ingin mendokumentasikan lagu-lagu yang biasa di bawakan di atas panggung, salah satu yang mereka pilih adalah lagu “All Your Love.” Simak bagaimana mereka membawakan lagu ini.

Mana yang paling menarik untuk anda ?

Berita ini bisa jadi basi bagi yang sudah tahu, tapi mungkin “mencengangkan” bagi mereka yang baru tahu, ya lagu  Gary Moore  “Still Got The Blues”     atau lebih tepatnya bagian solo gitarnya  yang melodius yang menjadi trademark lagu ini dinyatakan menjiplak  dari lagu “Nordach” milik grup prog rock Jerman, Jud’s Galery .

Hal ini dinyatakan oleh pengadilan Jerman akhir tahun lalu. Sebagai konsekuensinya pemusik kelahiran Belfast tahun 1952 ini bersama dengan label rekamannya dihariskan membayar denda kepada Juergen Winter yang merupakan pimpinan grup Jud’s Galery yang memperkarakan kasus ini. Untuk diketahui lagu “Nordach” dibuat pada tahun 1974, sedangkan  lagu “Still Got The Blues” milik Gary Moore ada pada album yang juga bernama Still Got The Blues,  dirilis pada tahun 1990.

Menanggapi hasil keputusan ini pendapat orang ternyata beragam. Ada yang berpendapat “kan nada memang adanya ya segitu-gitunya, jadi kalau ada kesamaan ya wajar saja“  alias tidak setuju dengan putusan pengadilan Jerman tersebut. Namun banyak juga yang menyetujui. Nah bagaimana dengan anda ? coba simak lagu Nordach dibawah ini,  perhatikan mulai sekitar  menit ke  6.19 . Setelah mendengarkan anda setuju yang mana, lepada pengadilan Jerman atau pada mereka yang berpendapat nada hanya segitu-gitunya.

Sebagai informasi tambahan Gary Moore baru “memakai baju” blues pada awal tahun 90 an. Sebelumnya gitaris yang memulai karirnya di awal tahun 70 an ini malang melintang di kancah musik rock. Tahun 1970 ia bergabung bersama grup Skid Row ( bukan Skid Row akhir tahun 80 an), kemudian Thin Lizzy, lalu juga group Colloseum II.  Group  Jud’s Galery sendiri masih ada sampai sekarang dan di bawah ini adalah performa mereka di tahun 2007, membawakan lagu Nordach

“The Boys are Back in Town”. Mesmo que você não conheça a ótima banda irlandesa Thin Lizzy, é grande a chance de já ter ouvido esse rock, no rádio, em trilhas de filmes, como “Toy Story” (no caso da animação da Pixar/Disney, o clássico do Thin Lizzy foi usado em trailers). É boa também a chance de você ter ouvido sucessos do Thin Lizzy regravados por nomes como Metallica (“Whiskey in the Jar”, presente em “Garage Inc” que teve clip e tudo), Iron Maiden (“Massacre”, lado B do single “Can I Play With Madness”), Smashing Pumpkins (“Dancing with the Moonlight”, lado B do CD single “Disarm”). Como a banda de Phil Lynnot acabou em 1983 e poucos discos foram lançados no Brasil, infelizmente o Thin Lizzy não é conhecido como deveria por aqui. E como deveria: junto com o Judas Priest, os irlandeses ajudaram a consolidar o formato de duas guitarras-solo. E como Lynnot “lançou” grandes nomes da guitarra!

Gary Moore! Scott Gorham! Brian Robertson (também passou pelo Motörhead). E John Sykes, que arrasou no Rock in Rio I (1985) tocando com o Whitesnake de David Coverdale! Até pouco tempo atrás, Sykes participava de uma banda que toca na Europa ainda com o nome de Thin Lizzy. Mas tenho dúvidas sobre esse tipo de revival. Meio complicado pensar em Lizzy sem Lynnot e sua voz rouca – principal compositor e marca registrada da banda. Após o último show do Thin Lizzy, em 4 de setembro de 1983, no Monsters of Rock Festival de Nuremberg, Alemanha, Lynnot (filho de irlandesa com brasileiro!) gravou discos-solo, mas às voltas com vício em drogas, morreu em janeiro de 1986.

Então, amigo, se você gosta de rock e não conhece Thin Lizzy, d e m o r o u. Recomendo uma visita a este site. Como fica transparente pelo bom número de canções regravadas, grandes bandas assumem que o Thin Lizzy foi de grande influência – casos de Iron Maiden e Metallica (veja o clip da versão do Metallica para Whiskey in the Jar, que o Lizzy consagrou, mas na verdade é um canção tradicional irlandesa). Valeu?

When I was a student, shortly after the late, great Phil Lynott had died, a friend once told me a fantastic story about him.

He had turned up in a pub somewhere and was very friendly and happy to give autographs and sign albums. Everyone in the pub was running home to get their Thin Lizzy albums for him to sign – but one enterprising soul went home and brought back a copy of Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version Of The War Of The Worlds, on which Lynott had performed the role of Parson Nathaniel. There can’t be many copies of that album signed by Phil Lynott out there.

Anyway, Top Of The Pops Thursday has already featured a live performance of Parisienne Walkwaysby Lynott’s childhood friend and longtime musical collaborator Gary Moore at a 2005 Phil Lynott memorial concert and this week, we have the pair’s final collaboration, the single Out In The Fields, a song about The Troubles in Northern Ireland.

Dating from May 1985, this clip is one of Lynott’s final live TV performances, possibly his last ever. I remember watching it when it first aired – it was on a short-lived Channel 4 music show devoted to hard rock/heavy metal which aired, I think, early evenings on a Friday and was called ECT.

It’s another one of those songs which, while outstanding in its own right, for me is all the more important because it also really evokes memories of a great time in my life.

Look out for Moore’s short but awesome guitar solo, one of his best. 

And because the sound quality, while listenable, isn’t the best on the live performance (having been ripped from a 24-year-old VCR recording), here is a bonus – the original video for the song:

Back in November of last year I posted this, in which I voice my opinion on how Lincoln’s only major music venue is only booking indie bands. If you have a quick read of it you’ll see that it is not a positive opinion on the matter, basically it’s the opposite. However 10 months later the Engine Shed have decided to book someone else, hooray!

Admittedly the majority of the bands playing are NME’s cast-offs from last year but there is the odd curve ball thrown in to keep the non-indie kids happy. One of these is Dragonforce. Now I am not a Dragonforce fan, I never have been and I doubt I ever will be but they are a big metal act at the minute and should hopefully draw large numbers of people to Lincoln’s primary music venue. If they have good support acts then I might pop-along but I have seen Dragonforce three times now and not once was I really that impressed.

Also in the mix is ex-Thin Lizzy man Gary Moore. Bringing his bluesy solo material to the Engine Shed is yet another sign of a well needed change. However, I don’t know whether this is either Moore’s doing or the Shed’s but charging £26.50 to see Gary Moore? Nah. He is talented and again he is a big name but he hasn’t done anything that amazing or impressive in the last decade or so. I don’t think I’ll be indulging in this one, but perhaps some of richer older rock fans of Lincoln will attend…perhaps.

The final ‘non-indie’ artist to be added to the Engine Shed’s slightly eclectic range of bookings is Dio! The legend himself, the man who brought you Holy Diver and made the ‘devil horn’ hand signal popular is coming to Lincoln. Similar to Gary Moore, it will cost you £20 and for some reason has an early curfew of 10pm. But it might be worth it! Dio has been involved with Rainbow, Sabbath and Heaven & Hell so a good show is guaranteed. However I don’t know why the Engine Shed is on Dio’s tour, I’d have thought he could have sold out much bigger venues. But never mind, he’s coming to Lincoln so Lincoln should go to him! Buy your tickets now and let’s all go watch Dio rocking hard and bringing more metal acts to the Engine Shed.

So currently I am patiently waiting for all these shows to be huge successes and the Engine Shed realise there is a want for alternative music. It’s all well and good booking The Enemy and Reverend & The Makers, but some of us want something a bit different. Hopefully, we’ll get our wish and Lincoln will finally get the music scene it’s been craving for years.

With high praise coming in from all sorts of places, this was my first Gary Moore purchase… What a place to start! I’ve read up enough on Gary and his albums to know that the blues is his true passion, but this is one heck of a hard rock album.

Victims of the Future is from Moore’s early ’80s heavy metal period that started with 1982’s Corridors of Power and with songs like “Victims of the Future” and especially “Murder In The Skies”, it’s a shame Moore didn’t become a huge guitar god act in the U.S. Why the United States rock/metal-buying public didn’t latch onto this album and cling tightly to it, I’ll never know.

As soon as I heard “Victims of the Future”, I was hooked. It’s a great piece of hard rock and is followed up by another outstanding rocker in “Teenage Idol”.The ballad “Empty Rooms” is another highlight of the album and I like the ‘84 remix bonus track just as much. The album’s real centerpiece is “Murder In The Skies” which features some really amazing heavy metal guitar work from Mr. Moore.

I wouldn’t really say this album is very much in line with what the general definition for “heavy metal” is these days. The only song that comes close to that, well, the only song that actually is that is “Murder In The Skies”. The rest is a nice blend slick rock (“Shapes Of Things”, “All I Want”, “Hold On To Love”) and hard rock (“Law Of The Jungle”, “Teenage Idol”, “Victims of the Future”).

Even the bonus tracks are good. “Devil In Her Heart” is a heavy number worthy of standing alongside “Murder In The Skies”, “Blinder” is a nice instrumental that sounds like something maybe Steve Vai would do, and remix of “Empty Rooms”  is a good slab of slick ’80s rock/pop that I happen to like. I’m assuming this remix is the version taken from Moore’s 1985 album Run for Cover, where he rerecorded it.

Anyone who isn’t familiar with Gary Moore and this album specifically is really missing out and I’m extremely happy I decided to purchase it.

Stars Beginning To Come Out In Daytime, Too

The stars always come out at night.  That is, they used to.  What has always been good enough for Mother Nature, was okay for radio.  Then was then, but now is now.

The situation is changing and will be very evident within another month.  The stars will be out in the daytime!

Radio stars we mean.  Ever since a red-headed ukulele player, one Arthur Godfrey, made such a success of his daytime program, there has been a definite trend to bringing the big names to the daylight programming.

This season will see more and more top names switching from night to day.  There will be Buddy Rogers over ABC; Gary Moore on CBS with a show similar to his old “Club Matinee;” Mutual will come up with Frank Sinatra during the day, and is still trying to work out a similar airer for Dinah Shore; NBC is planning to use Eddie Albert in a daytime stanza (they feel he may turn out to be another Don McNeil); and Columbia already has a sponsor signed for a Saturday daytimer starring Joe DiMaggio.

Leading Hollywood stars, including Bing and Bob Crosby, Dinah Shore, Dennis Day, and Jimmy Wallington, are featured on a 30-minute radio salute to the Golden Jubilee anniversary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars to be heard over Station WTSP at 5:30 p.m. today.

This full half-hour of music, drama and comedy will also feature Bob Crosby’s nine-year-old daughter, Cathy; a Golden Jubilee message from Lyall T. Beggs, VFW commander-in-chief, and the bands of John Scott Trotter, Frank deVol, and D’Artega.

A man’s belief in reincarnation backgrounds the “Beacon for the Dead” drama which Roger Elliott will explain during Mutual’s “House of Mystery” broadcast today at 4:00 p.m. over WTSP.  The man involved believed his wife to be a woman dead for 200 years, and that he is forced to kill her.  Roger Elliott, visiting their home, points up the lack of logic in the man’s plans—and provides the happy ending the man actually wanted.  Betty Colclough, program director for ABC’s Town Meeting Of The Air via WSUN, has been stricken with malaria in Manila, P. I.  She was making advance arrangments for the program’s world tour and will fly to Honolulu to rest up . . . A cryptic message written on the halves of ten one hundred dollar bills sets the scene for an adventure on Mutual’s The Saint program over WTSP tonight at 7:30.  Vincent Price is starred . . . James Stewart and Bette Davis have been selected to kick-off the Lux Radio Theatre 15th season, via WDAE, on Aug. 29 in the drama “June Bride.”

News reporters Edward R. Murrow and Bill Henry both return to their radio broadcasts from vacations on Monday Aug. 29.  Murrow is heard over WDAE and Henry via WTSP . . . CBS-WDAE launches a week-long half hour series titled “The Nation’s Defenses” tomorrow night.
