(Photo/Morgan E. Heim)

Adobe Town wins a reprieve from natural gas leasing in its Citizen’s Proposed Wilderness. The Bureau of Land Management removed 15 parcels comprising more than 14,800 acres of Adobe Town from the December lease sale.

“It’s breath of fresh air the Bureau of Land Management has decided to draw a line in the sand and not lease away one of our most cherished places,” said Nada Culver, Senior Counsel at The Wilderness Society in a press release. “This is proof when people from all walks of life stick up for a special spot, we can move mountains and ensure new generations Americans will always have a place to hunt, camp and hike.”

Much of the rock in Adobe Town is really just sandstone, easily eroded or crumbled away. (Photo/Morgan E. Heim)

Abobe Town’s labyrinth of hoodoos and canyons make it reminiscent of Bryce Canyon, except in Adobe Town, there are no trails to guide your way. Wyoming declared the area “very rare or uncommon” in 2007, a designation that afforded the land some protection, but not from future oil and gas development. Adobe Town has been one of the most hotly contested regions of the Red Desert, receiving 89,000 comments mostly in favor of its protection during the revision of the Great Divide land-use plan. But leasing continued.

The removal in November of the 15 nominated parcels from the BLM lease marks parts of Adobe Town as too environmentally important to warrant leasing at this time.

Pronghorn munch on sage brush just outside Adobe Town in Wyoming's Red Desert.(Photo/Morgan E. Heim)

“This lease deferral is the first sign that the BLM has started to listen, and could mark the dawn of a new day when oil and gas development proceeds cautiously, and crown jewel landscapes like Adobe Town get the protection they deserve,” said Erik Molvar, a wildlife biologist with Biodiversity Conservation Alliance in a press release. “The BLM deserves credit for making a sound decision.”

In watching a recent Dr. Oz episode I learned that when you hear gurgling your stomach area that it is not actually your stomach, but your small intestines. What will relieve this gas is eating Greek strained yogurt.

He served the Greek yogurt with honey, but I enjoy it as a sour cream substitute. It tastes more like non-fat sour cream to me. I enjoy it as a dip with no salt tortilla chips. This is great for a low sodium diet, too. The Greek Yogurt I purchase at Trader Joe’s has no sodium or cholesterol.

He mentioned that eating too fast and drinking from a straw may also cause gurgling sounds because you are swallowing air.

Yogurt is a great probiotic which is very healthy for you. But let us skip all those sugary yogurts, please!

I hope you find this helpful!

When I pulled into the gas station this weekend, I went to the one and only pump that wasn’t occupied. Since It’s such a small station, and usually packed, I found myself quite lucky. So I put my card in, hit all the fun little buttons, and as I grabbed the handle I noticed why this particular pump wasn’t occupied. I had two choices now, I could just put the handle back, and not be charged anything…hoping that another pump will open up soon. OR, I could just keep doing what I’m doing. As I stood there contemplating, I noticed other cars, parking behind people already pumping gas…these lines were only getting longer, and the gas light in my car wasn’t going away. So, screw it, I just started pumping. I mean, it doesn’t say WHY the pump was rejected…it could have been for a number of things…one of which could be a safety problem, but I decided to take those chances. As my car was happily filling with liquid schwartz, I finally realized what may have been rejected…the automatic pump shutoff. You know how your pump will click and stop filling….yeeeeeeeah….mine didn’t do that. I know my car well enough to know how empty my tank is, and about when it will stop. When the gas just kept going into the car, I got a bit worried. I could chance it and say to myself that maybe I was lower than I thought…I decided to stop playing with fate, and stop the pump myself. Well…let me just round off the total first…crap, I’m one cent over. Stupid pump.

Previously we have discussed water smart meters and the benefits that can be derived for both water

Previously we have discussed water smart meters and the benefits that can be derived for both water utilities and the customer. Smart meters can have also been developed to measure gas and electricity consumption. Smart metering has been comparatively slow to penetrate gas suppliers however ,principally because of the characteristics and nature of gas. Utilities cannot restrict the flow through a meter (and thus limit load) as this would affect the pressure of the gas delivered to an appliance and consequently its operation and safety. Remotely reconnecting gas powered appliances would be hazardous as gas could flow out into a building from appliances that have been left on after an outage or disconnection.

Figure 1: Gas Smart Meters provide more detailed data for the Consumer & Utility Company

Gas smart meters are being used however, and the benefits of gas smart meters are clearly defined. Gas smart meters can be polled following outages instead of utility employees having to go door to door to reenable service. The information provided by gas smart meters is also much richer and can help utilities to explain consumption patterns to their customers, for instance, the impact of cold weather on natural gas usage and the consequences for the monthly bill. A type of demand response is also possible using gas smart meters as utilities can charge customers different prices for using gas at different times of the day.

A recent report by British Gas estimates that gas smart meters can cut energy bills by about a third – UK£400 per year on average. A field trial of 50,000 smart meters undertaken by British Gas shows not only a reduction in bills but also a 40% drop in billing enquiries. 85% of triallists found that smart meters were easy to use and the display of cost information on screen encouraged households to turn off appliances when they are not being used. One issue to note however is that only 44% of participants felt that smart meters were reducing their energy consumption.

The British Gas trial deployed both gas and electricity smart meters and it is the latter which are the most well known type of smart meter. Electricity smart meters have benefits both for the utility and the customer. Demand Response which exposes customers to peak electricity prices and encourages them to modify their electricity consumption accordingly would not be possible without electricity smart meters. As there is a communications link between the smart meter and the utility, the location of outages can be identified quickly and enable the utility company to verify that outages have been resolved at every meter location. Given the richer pool of data provided by electricity smart meters, grid engineers can pinpoint bottlenecks and inefficiencies in the network by analysing the periodic data generated by smart meters. Forecasting and load balancing can also improve using this new data resource.

Figure 2: Electricity Smart Meters benefit Consumers, Utility Companies and the Environment

As well as reducing cost for the consumer by encouraging the better management of consumption, some government bodies require utlities to reimburse customers for electricity they produce on-site and feed into the grid. This is known as net metering as the utility will subtract the amount of electricity produced from the amount of the electricity taken from the grid. The consumer then pays or receives the net amount. This is becoming feasible as more and more consumers in the coming years will have their own small renewable energy facilities such as a wind turbine, solar power or home fuel cells. Net metering programs are underway in Ontario and British Columbia in Canada and are being planned as part of Amsterdam’s smart city initiative.

Of course, the chief driver for electricity smart meters is an environmental one. Being provided with information on their consumption should encourage consumers to manage and reduce their energy use. In other words, consumers are incentivised financially to reduce their electricity consumption. Energy consumption that is more spread out rather than a series of peaks and troughs means more efficient operations for the utility and less peaks and stress for infrastructure. In theory, this should also means less infrastructure being built in terms of transmission lines and new plants and distributed electricity generation using wind and solar power. Furthermore, the previously discussed Demand Response can reduce emissions and the finer level of data generated by smart meters facilitates the calculation of a consumer’s environmental footprint. Smart meters and smart grids should also lead to smart appliances that can sense overload on the grid and reduce their own power usage accordingly.

We have now discussed the main types of smart meter. In the next article we will discuss current issues in smart metering, Meter Data Management (MDM) and the implications of smart meters for IT.

Seriously, college is all I think about now. College and life and death and dying and Goddamn I

Seriously, college is all I think about now. College and life and death and dying and Goddamn I’m sick of it. I’m ready to be done with college and I haven’t even started it yet. I’m hoping that’s a good omen in the long run, though, because that’s the way I felt about prom exactly and I ended up having a blast.

But there’s just so much stress involved. If KT tells me one more time “you need to relax” I’m going to punch Colton in the face, because if it weren’t for him she’d be the same as before.

But life is life and it changes and so do people so I’d better suck it up and move on. God.

At least I’m talking to boys, though. That might help me relax (Jesus Christ).

Relaxing isn’t what I’m supposed to be doing, though. I’m supposed to be working, supposed to be doing everything I can to beat my way into a great school.

My mom told me today that I’m going to end up pumping gas. She told me to go to JCC for free. And meant it.

I’m just not even going to think about that. There’s no way. Just no fucking way I could go there. After all of my dreaming, all of my hard work, to throw it away, for that place?! I know I probably don’t know what I’m saying when I say this, but I’d rather be in debt for the rest of my life and do what I love than go somewhere to learn how to do a nine to five job and get plastered every weekend for free.

God. And there’s just no way I could throw away everything I’ve hoped for and thought of and wished for with all of my heart. Just because of money.

I know money’s important, and my mom would say I’m stupid and have no concept of it because I’ve never had to get a job, never had to make the money to support myself.

Well I guess I’ll figure that all out next year, won’t I? I haven’t gotten any experience with it so far, huh?

The way I figure it, I’ll either sink or float next year. I’ll either succeed or suck and come back home to pump gas.

But I’ll be damned if I don’t try to be all that I can. It’ll be like the dream where I died and watched everyone standing around, shaking their heads and mourning, “What a waste of potential.”

Well, here’s news. I’m not dead.

And I have all the potential in the world. I plan to put it to use.

Suck onnnnn that.

The Mirror, Vol. 13, No. 639

This Saturday, we reported: “According to a recent notification from the Council of Ministers, the Royal Government decided to suspend all promotions for government positions in 2010. If a promotion in any position is planned, it has to wait until 2011.” That was even more surprising than another report which the Mirror carried on 10.11.2009: “The Government Cuts Salaries of Advisers” – which, in a way, was only the correction of a violation of common sense (and economic justice): Why should only some public servants, employed full time, get a second salary for an additional function as adviser, a task to be adhered to during working hours which are already covered by another salary? But such double, or even multiple payments for some persons, seem to have gone on for years. In many other countries, the Auditor General – being an independent position without special loyalties – might have intervened many years ago.

When working to select and to present texts for the Mirror, related to some new millions of dollars “to help Cambodia,” it is surprising that quite often the text does not specify whether this refers to a credit to be paid back, or to a grant. Even some statements of preference, from where it is more agreeable to receive funds – whether there are conditions of transparency or of human rights adherence part of the agreement, or whether funds come without such expectations – do not distinguish between grants and loans. Though the latter have a minor condition: they have to be paid back.

The Mirror referred last month to the loans of about US$ 1 billion Cambodia had contracted with China in 2008 and 2009, continuing: “We are not aware that details about the timing and the terms of the re-payment obligations were published. Neither did we see any evaluation of the situation in terms of what is called a “sustainable external debt” – which is defined by some scholars of economics as “a situation where a country is expected to be able to meet its current and future debt obligations in full, without recourse to debt relief, rescheduling of debts, or the accumulation of arrears, and without unduly compromising growth.”

Some old debts did received special attention in recent reporting. On 11 November 2009, one paper had reported, supposedly based on information from high ranking Cambodian officials, that the Russian Government is considering to cancel the US$1.5 billion debt that Cambodia owes to Russia. But this had to be corrected on the basis what high ranking Russian officials said: when the president of the National Assembly and his delegation returned without success from Russia: “Russia Refuses to Cancel Debt” – it was clear that in spite of similar efforts in 2006 and 2008, the Russian government had not agreed to wipe out these old debts from the 1980ies. While we did not see details about the related negotiations, it is interesting to remember what had been reported formerly in 2007: that the Russian government is prepared to consider arrangements for the old debts under three conditions:

Russia asks for the resumption of Moscow-Phnom Penh flights, for the promotion partly of tourism, and partly of investment.

Russia asks Cambodia to strengthen military relations between the two countries by asking the ministries of defense of the two countries to have good relations again, because so many members of the Cambodian armed forces studied in Russia; therefore, the Cambodian Government should accept the request and organize those who studied military affairs in Russia again, and Russia, in turn, promises to accept Cambodian students to study in Russia.

Russia sees the possibility to exploit natural gas in Cambodia, and asks the Cambodian National Assembly to facilitate relations, so that Russia can come to invest in oil drilling, because Russia has long years of experience in [oil and] gas drilling and hopes that Cambodia will allow Russian investors to come to invest in natural gas exploitation in Cambodia.

We do not remember that these points – especially as they relate also to untapped oil resources – have ever been mentioned in the more recent reports about maritime oil resource negotiations with a number of other countries. It should therefore be no surprise that the latest delegation to Russia to discuss the old debts did not bring the expected solution: that Russia would simply write off US$1.5 billion.

Another old, much much smaller debt, also shows up from time to time. We quote old headlines as a reminder:

16.2.2008: US Demanded Debt [of approx. $154 million out of the debt of $339 million], Cambodia Said the Debt Was Owed by an Illegal Government [of the Khmer Republic]

18.2.2008: US Discusses Debt Owed by Lon Nol Era; General Opinion Says US Should Better Cancel the Debt

8.9.2009: America Hopes that an Agreement on the Cambodian Debt to the USA Will Be Achieved Soon to Cancel the Cambodian Debt

23.9.2009: The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Mr. Hor Namhong Will Discuss Possible Solutions to the Debt from the Time of General Lon Nol’s Regime [the Khmer Republic] of More Than US$300 Million That Cambodia Owes America

To look forward to comprehensive information about all debt obligations, in light of what economic theories say about an appropriate “sustainable external debt” ratio is not unreasonable.

The recent dramatic decisions, to cut the salaries of the large number of advisers, and to freeze all promotions in the civilian and uniformed services, “aiming to save state resources in 2010,” is a signal of a new approach to handle public funds.

For nine years a slow and painful discussion has been going on. The people of Gaza, oppressed and frustrated (over 70% of the population of the Gaza Strip are UN-registered refugees), have an offshore gasfield in their territorial waters estimated to be worth at least $4 billion.

In 1994, the Gaza–Jericho first agreement (withdraw of the Israeli Defence Force from Gaza) allocated the territorial waters of the coast of Gaza to an extent of twenty nautical miles as territory of the Palestinian Authority. However, the other side of the agreement was that Israel retain full security control over the area.

In 2000, British Gas, whose product I burn to keep warm here, discovered the Gaza Marine gasfield. British Gas received its licence to explore the Gazan coast not from its owners in accord with the 1994 agreement, but from the Israeli government. It looks like the Israeli government had timed things so that the gas exploration licence would be granted before formally handing the waters over to the PA, to keep Israel ‘in charge’ of the resources. Since the gas discovery, IDF gunboats (made in Britain) have been active in the waters, destroying Gazan fishing industry by forcing fishing boats to return home (as reported by Amnesty International: 15 fishermen killed, over 200 injured). It is clear that Israel considers that the gas is theirs.

British Gas originally wanted to link Gaza Marine by pipeline to Ashkelon on the Israel coast, already a hub for gas pipelines. The PA would have got some profit from the sale, but this would go to a not-so-accountable bank account in the favour of the Fatah presidency. In 2003, Ariel Sharon, as Prime Minister of Israel, vetoed the deal, fearing that independent income for the PA would fuel terrorism against Israel. In 2005, as Sharon was ‘disengaging’ from Gaza (but still besieging it), British Gas tried a different deal to link Gaza Marine to the Egyptian offshore gasfields. The deal progressed well, being a more ‘neutral’ option without direct Israeli involvement.

In 2006, the people of Gaza, unaware that democracy should be boring, ‘accidentally’ elected the ‘wrong party’, Hamas, to power in the PA. The US and EU condemned the Palestinian electorate for not voting for their preferred party — so much for ‘exporting democracy’! Ehud Olmert, Israeli PM, drew Tony Blair into an ‘attractive’ intervention on the issue. If the deal with Egypt were scuppered and the Ashkelon deal put back on the table, the Fatah presidency (the likely corrupt Palestinian party everyone else wanted to win) would be bound more closely with Israel and have the financial weight from the sale of gas to undermine Hamas. This intervention clearly fits with Blair’s neoliberal foreign policy: forcing the opening up of new economic markets, creating economic relationships as the basis for peace and security. Wider energy security policies were discussed, including using the Gaza pipeline to complete a circuit between Eilat on the Red Sea and the Baku–Tblisi–Ceyhan Trans-Caspian Pipeline (under BP leadership) from Turkey. Blair’s intervention worked, but British Gas pulled out of negotiations with Israel on a deal that would leave the PA being paid ‘in kind’ for its gas.

When in 2007, Tony Blair resigned as British PM and immediately became Middle East envoy for the Quartet with a special remit for the economic development of the Occupied Territories. Although on paper, he is committed to the development of the Wadi Arabah, it is more likely that the development of Fatah–Israeli symbiosis via the sale of Gazan gas was his top priority. British Gas were brought back into negotiations, and Israel began bargaining fast during its six months of preparation for the invasion of Gaza. The war, misunderstood by most global media, was about securing energy supply, just as the 2006 Lebanon war was timed to coincide with the opening of the Baku–Tblisi–Ceyhan Trans-Caspian Pipeline. Perhaps it’s no wonder that Blair was quiet about the invasion of Gaza. It has been almost a year, and British Gas, the Israeli government, Fatah and Tony Blair are ready to sit down and divest Gaza of its oil with minimal benefit to its compressed hordes. Meanwhile, Gazan fishermen are still being fired on by British-made IDF gunboats as they attempt to take the fish from the sea, one of the very few other natural resources of the Strip.

With an increasing number of holiday festivities being held in the home this year, we’re all l

With an increasing number of holiday festivities being held in the home this year, we’re all looking for creative and cost effective ways to spruce up our table settings and create a look that will impress our guests. When it comes to setting your Thanksgiving table, options for the adventurous host are limitless. What are the hottest trends for you to bring to your table this year? Here are a few ideas that will take your Thanksgiving table from ordinary to extraordinary:

Color, Texture and Mix – Match:

In table linens and accessories, this year we are seeing rich, saturated colours. We are also seeing a lot of texture and the mixing and matching of patterns with solids. There are a lot of options out there to do something warm and inviting.

Color Trends

Warm tones have always been popular for Fall and that continues with some of the biggest trends in colour combinations this year. Some of those include:
- Deep Spice and Aubergine with muted Gold accents – Dark Chocolate with Blues and Gray accents – Olive Green, Aubergine and softer greens as accents – Dark Chocolate, Taupe and Natural

Tabletop Decor

- Use things that you already have in your home – pull out your 3 or 4 of your favourite vases of different heights. Use complementary colors of fresh flowers for a simple and stunning arrangement. Fill three or four vases and/or glass bowls with different colors and sizes of ornaments, fruits, leaves – anything with color and texture that will create visual excitement.

- Your guests are all unique – why not celebrate their individuality? Use different patterns and/or colors of napkin rings that match their unique personalities. Are they simple or sophisticated? Fun or formal? Unpredictable or conservative? Show them you care with a little customization to complement your table linens.

- Candles are always a dramatic and cost effective way to make a statement – use votives at each place setting with a name card and emphasize beautiful table linens for a classy and simple look. Or go more dramatic and cluster your favourite candle sticks of varying heights and looks as a centerpiece. Use colors that complement or match your dishes, glasses and table linens.

- Nothing brings subtle sophistication to your table like a well-selected runner. Use one the length of the table plus 12 inches to hang over the edge (usually a 90″ or longer) as the perfect centerpiece. If you are using a solid tablecloth or placemats, make sure to jazz it up with a festive pattern. If you have a patterned look already, use a vibrant solid runner that picks up on one of the colors in your runner.

- Use 2 napkins instead of one with a napkin ring. With a solid napkin inside, and a more decorative napkin on the outside.

When setting your table, just remember: do what feels right for the mood. A casual gathering calls for a relaxed setting. A formal meal should feel that way at the table. Either way, it doesn’t take much to elevate your in-home dining experience. Replacing an old tablecloth with something fresh an exciting, and adding a few simple table accessories can go a long way to impressing your guests. It’s that time of year when family gatherings abound and everyone spends countless hours congregating around the dinner table. With the hours spent preparing the perfect meal, make sure you don’t forget to finish it off with the perfect setting.

Our environment is being destroyed; our resources will not last another hundred years; our ecosystem

Our environment is being destroyed; our resources will not last another hundred years; our ecosystem cannot support our booming population; desertification is robbing us of arable land. These are but a few of the claims commonly made by environmental groups and the popular media today.

The intention behind such assertions is to shock people into action and there are legitimate concerns behind many of these issues, but they are often unrealistic, based on absurd assumptions (like no technological advancement), and every one of them has been an issue since ancient Greece.

Sustainable development, possibly the most self-explanatory term in our vocabulary, refers to social and economic development that does not waste future resources and, therefore, is sustainable. Basically it’s eco-friendly economic development.

Sustainable societies are those in which the three key forces – social, economic, and environmental – are in balance. Satisfying all three is the most daunting challenge faced by decision makers today. Each force seems, at times, to be in conflict with the other two; but the conflict between the three is the driving force behind almost all societal, economic, technological, and environmental progress.

The economy is generally the most useful of the three forces because it is a societal construct and can be manipulated effectively by a relatively small group of large governments and powerful corporations. It is not only possible, but also practical to manipulate society and the environment by making economic changes. Economic equality, for example, almost always leads to social equality and changes in hiring practices, wages, and working conditions have had a huge impact on societies.

In this country the civil rights movement, women’s movement, and the progressive movement of the early 20th century stand out as examples of economic manipulation, namely more fair hiring practices and wages and safer working conditions, ushering in extreme social change.

Economics also can be used to protect the environment. If, for example, OPEC fixed the price of crude oil at three hundred dollars per barrel, consumption of gasoline would plummet and scientists would find a workable alternative within a couple years. The environmental pillar would be moved drastically in the right direction by controlling the economic pillar, though not without cost.

The global economy, however, is also driven by environmental and social factors. As environmental problems become more severe, for example, natural economic forces will facilitate a shift (however slow) to cleaner fuels and better planning. This shift has already begun in the form of Research and Development into clean fuels, lightweight materials, and more efficient engines. R & D is the precursor to technological advance.

Returning for a moment to the women’s movement and civil rights movement, they also are excellent examples of social changes leading to economic change. Employers were forced to accept both women and African Americans in capacities they otherwise would not have been considered for because the enormous war effort caused a labor shortage. Having experienced opportunities previously given only to white men, both groups refused to again take a back seat and they were able to make enough noise to convince political powers that a new solution was needed.

Similarly, as population growth slows in many developed economies, labor shortages and increasing levels of indebtedness will force businesses to underdeveloped countries in search of both a labor force and a new consumer base.

While I maintain that growth is not necessary in a capitalist economy, growth does lead to higher profits. Businesses will, therefore, always seek growth. If the consumer base in developed economies like the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Japan stops growing or, worse, begins to shrink, businesses will be forced to create growth elsewhere by paying better wages in factories already in place in the “third world.”

Evidence of this transition is already present, though it is admittedly difficult to see. Levels of indebtedness have been rising in rich countries over the last twenty-or-so years while population growth has slowed drastically, together indicating that our consumer base may be nearing its limit. Businesses also are positioning themselves overseas; knowingly or unknowingly they are preparing for the transition to greater social and economic development in the third world.

At times our economy is limited by our environment and our social growth is limited in turn by our economic means. Some have even suggested that further economic development threatens to outstrip our resources, ruining our environment and sending society back to the Stone Age. It is my position, however, that as long as we actively adapt to each new challenge we can sustain our level of cultural and societal complexity indefinitely.

Keys to sustainable development:

1. Phase out fossil fuels: Our dependence on fossil fuels goes beyond the automotive industry. Planes, factories, and farm equipment are just a few of a bevy of dependant technologies being overlooked. We also will need to find a replacement for the motor oil we use as a lubricant.

2. Rethink agriculture: We need to farm in such a way that the land remains fertile for future generations and vastly important water resources are not contaminated. The solution may be to better control fertilizer; it may be to rotate crops such that the soil is replenished regularly and needs less fertilizer. Once we have the solution the spread of the new technology will be crucial.

3. Mechanization and of “third-world” agriculture: There are three important benefits of sustainable, mechanized agriculture for sustainable development. Countries will be able to produce more food on less land; the land will not be ruined by over-farming; people who previously were farmers will be forced to the cities and the transition to an urban, educated culture will be accelerated, resulting in slower population growth; jobs will be created as more people are needed to process, market and sell food; people will be more healthy as meat becomes more available.

4. Rich countries need to invest overseas: If food production industries are to be modernized, the “third world” needs roads, cars, processing plants, trains, planes, airports, ships and seaports. Transportation and processing will be key and they do not have the capital for so many changes.

5. International Minimum Wage: Without it poor people will continue to have dozens of kids and the kids will work for next to nothing in dangerous factory conditions. The U.S. and her allies need to be responsible and slave wages and child labor need to stop.

6. The world needs more teachers: If conditions are ever to improve, people must not only grow richer, but smarter as well. If children are free to attend school, meaning their parents can support them alone, they will be the ones to advance society, providing there is someone to teach them.

7. Gender Equality: If women are working they are likely to have fewer kids. If they work and have kids, fewer of their kids will have to, and if there kids don’t work they may go to school. If women are recognized as equals, boys and girls will be allowed an education and the next generation of educated women will probably have fewer kids and the women that have kids will be more capable of raising educated kids. Finally, twice as many educated people is always a good thing; technological advance will accelerate as more people contribute. In short, gender equality is key to both education and economic development.
