Falling gas prices are hitting numbers not seen since the beginning of the year.

How about under $3 a gallon in North Jersey?

A Delta station on Brook Avenue in Passiac Park, north of Newark, is charging just $2.97 a gallon, the lowest in the state, according to GasBuddy.com – and it’s not some gimmick price.

“It’s very busy,” said a worker who declined to share his name.  ”Like Hurricane Sandy all over again.”

(AP) – The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline fell 1 cent overnight to $3.24, a low for the year. The price is still about a penny more than at this time last year.

Here is some more information for drivers as the Christmas holiday travel season picks up:

REGIONAL SPOTLIGHT:

Gas prices in the Rocky Mountain region are close to the national average. Utah is highest at an average of $3.27 a gallon, but that’s down nearly 40 cents from a month ago. Wyoming is the least expensive at $3.14. That’s 7 cents cheaper than this date a year earlier. The rest of the states: Colorado $3.18; Montana $3.22; and Idaho $3.25.

BIG CITY DRIVING:

If you must buy gas in a big U.S. city, be prepared to pay more than you would in a suburb. Some current average prices for major U.S. cities, according to the Energy Department: San Francisco $3.94; Los Angeles $3.87; New York City $3.70; Boston $3.62; and Chicago $3.56.

REMEMBER WHEN:

The national average for a gallon of regular was $3.23 on Christmas Day a year ago. Five years ago drivers paid $2.97 and 10 years ago the average price at the pump on the holiday was $1.41, according to Oil Price Information Service.

By Monday, the national average should fall below the $3.2775 a gallon drivers were paying on Jan. 1, according to analysts. The drop is a present for those planning to hit the road during what is expected to be the busiest Christmas travel season in six years.

Still, it’s more like a stocking stuffer. That’s because for the second straight year, Americans will spend a record amount on gasoline. The government estimates that gas averaged $3.63 a gallon this year, 10 cents above the record set a year ago.

Drivers can only hope that forecasts for lower prices next year come true.

The average price for a gallon of gasoline is $3.29, 1.7 cents cheaper than a week ago, according to gasbuddy.com. National gas prices have fallen 4.8 cents over the same time period averaging $3.34 a gallon.

Some Rapid City drivers say while they appreciate the savings, it’s been far too long since they’ve seen gas prices nearing three dollars.

“A couple of years ago I’m thinking,” said Kim Stafford who paid $2.95 a gallon. “Gas prices are just terrible but maybe we are getting something figured out.”

“I think it’s gonna go up,” said Julie Evans, who was happy to fill up her truck for less than $60. “Maybe it’s the government’s way of making us feel a little bit better about where the economy is going, so I think it’s just a tease.”

The cheapest gas spotted in Rapid City was $3.02 a gallon.

A survey brought struggling commuters a bit of joy on Sunday! The Lundberg Survey, a survey that  inventories gas prices at stations across the country, reports that prices have dropped 46 cents a gallon. Horrraaaayyyyy!!!!!  Prices are expected to continue to decline. Even with the dip, prices are still about 8 cents higher than last years average. Guess which state had the highest average?

Since gas prices don’t seem to be going down anytime soon, we are all looking for new and interesting ways to save money. Not just save money overall but specifically how we can save money on gas.

When we look at the big picture, there aren’t too many options. Buy a newer car that can increase gas mileage, don’t drive, or use gas additives that can increase gas mileage in the vehicle you currently drive.

All those choices are excellent, but I want to focus on only one of them. Mainly because only one of them is a feasible option for most people. We don’t all have piles of money laying around to go buy a new car, not to mention you could end up spending more than you will save to achieve this anyway.

We could select to not drive, but this also is not a reasonable task in this day and age. Most of us just don’t have the free time to ride the bus, walk, or peddle our bikes everywhere we go.

Which means it really comes down to this… Are fuel additives worth the money? Do they really save us a significant amount of money on gas? I’m going to give it to you straight on fuel additives, and explain to you how and why they work.

With Obama being reelected gas prices will climb higher.

Crude oil prices account for about 66 percent of the price of gasoline, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Granted, other factors play a role in deciding the price we pay at the pump, including taxes and the cost of distribution, but it’s clear that the price of crude directly affects the price of gasoline.

As crude oil increases in price, the price of gasoline tends to increase. Likewise, when markets are calm and the price of crude oil decreases, the price of gasoline decreases.

With that in mind, take a look at the following chart and try to make sense of what’s going on:

See that? Although the price of crude has fallen in recent months, as the above chart clearly indicates, the price of gasoline remains at a record high.

“Anecdotally, it feels like when oil prices rise, gas prices at the pump rise; but when turmoil pauses in global geo-politics – or some entity decides that high oil prices just will not do for the world’s economy – gas prices at the pump seem not to drop so quickly,” writers are Zero Hedge note.

“Yes there are pipeline, inventory (and even tax) issues but the following chart suggests ‘gouging’ on a national level,” they add.

It’s also worth noting that what we’re seeing today with the price of gasoline and crude is eerily similar to what we saw right before the economic collapse of 2008.

Gasoline costs are driving people to new measures of saving fuel by carpooling and buying the latest fuel saving gimmick on a late night infomercial.

Sometimes carpooling is not an option and neither is buying a new car, therefore a reprieve must be found by achieving better gas mileage with your current car.

Believe it or not, people’s driving habits can make a drastic difference in the fuel economy of a car, and the best part is they are very cheap or cost nothing.

Cars use the most fuel when starting the engine and accelerating from a dead stop.

The starting process of a car will have a thicker fuel air mixture, which is why the exhaust smell is heavier when starting a cold engine. If stopping somewhere for only a brief minute, keeping the engine running, will use the same amount of fuel as stopping the engine and restarting again.

When accelerating from a dead stop, the rolling resistance of the tires and weight of the car must be overcome to start moving. When approaching a stop light, attempt to keep some of the rolling inertia in the car because a rolling start uses less fuel than a static start.

Accelerating a car gradually from a stop and when at cruising speeds is a drastic fuel saver. Quick acceleration by flooring the gas pedal will get great response but also use the most fuel in the engine. A gradual climb to the desired speed is one of the best fuel economy improving methods which relates solely to driving habits.

When coasting down a hill or coming to a stop, dropping the transmission into neutral has been a long time method to achieving better gas mileage. The transmission and engine will actually slow the car down when in gear, which will put less wear on to the brake pads of the car but use more fuel.

Better Gas Mileage with Proper Car Maintenance

Finding a happy balance between neutral cruising and keeping the car in gear will definitely yield a noticeably better gas mileage.

Regular maintenance of your car will maintain the gas mileage to not see a dip in performance.

Changing the oil every 3,000 miles as well as the oil and air filter will keep the engine running efficiently. The air filter will typically last longer than 3,000 miles depending on driving conditions, but clean oil and a clean air filter will drastically improve fuel mileage, especially if you cannot remember the last time either was changed.

The fuel filter also should be changed every 30,000 miles. Gasoline is by no means clean, and is filled with dirt particulates. This restricts the fuel flow, lowers gas mileage and will even pass particulates into the engine harming the performance.

Cleaning the fuel injectors of your car will bring back some of the lost power and definitely yield better gas mileage. A liquid fuel injector cleaner run through the fuel system will typically do the trick.

Properly Inflated Tires Gives You Better Gas Mileage

Tire pressure in a car’s tires will drastically affect the gas mileage of a car.
