Earlier this month I mentioned my sceptical thoughts on dream interpretation as part of post inspire

Earlier this month I mentioned my sceptical thoughts on dream interpretation as part of post inspired by a dream I’d had the night before. At the time I considered mentioning one of the most vivid, and by far the strangest dream I’ve ever had. I refrained from doing so because it seemed a bit beside the point, but I think the time has now come for me to share the story. It all happened in June of this year. . .

My wife and I were making a trip to visit some of my family in Alabama. As we had an extremely early flight from Gatwick we drove up the day before and stayed in a hotel. Not only did this mean we didn’t have to leave home at something like 2am the day of our flight, but it also meant we were able to use the hotel swimming pool and just enjoy being isolated in our own little bubble together without any of our usual responsibilities. It was nice to be able to relax before having to go deal with the lovely set of procedures that are such an integral part of air travel these days.

At any rate, we retired early in the evening and both fell quickly asleep. A few hours later I woke up in a very dark room, feeling very confused about where I was, what I was doing and what had been happening. As an awareness of just what had been going on in my sleeping head dawned on me I emitted a half-shouted “Oh. . . No!” which brought my wife fully awake in a state of panic. When I told the reason for my sudden waking and speaking she laughed just about as loud and as long as I’d ever heard her laugh. She was convulsed.

You see, I’d been dreaming that I was Susan Boyle the former X-Factor contestant. The fact that I don’t enjoy that programme and that, as far as I can remember, I’ve never dreamed to be another publicly visible person would, one might think, combine with the fact that SuBo is a woman to make her an unlikely character for my sleeping brain to identify with. Apparently that’s not the case. What was even stranger about the whole thing was that in my dream I wasn’t Susan Boyle on stage performing to fans, or being interviewed by the press. No, I was a barefoot Susan Boyle on the run from the law on a purple mobility scooter.

Apparently I was about to be sectioned as mentally ill and, I’d taken to the streets with the mobility scooter and a portable radio in the hopes of making it the station ahead of the woman-hunt being reported on. I knew it was unlikely I’d be able to evade police capture and that I’d probably be best off turning myself in, but I thought I’d have a go. Besides, part of me was enjoying really opening up the throttle on my purple mobility aide and tearing up the pavement at speeds in excess of 15 miles an hour.

After a couple of close shaves with officers on foot and reports that the authorities had a good idea of this Susan Boyle’s general location and were tightening their net I realised I had no shoes. No shoes, according to First Great Western policy, meant no train ride so I was forced to return to my pebble-dashed bungalow where I donned a pair of sensible flat-soled shoes before hearing that all train stations were now under observation of the police as well as ports, bus stations and airports. Escape was hopeless. At that point I hopped back on my scooter, drove straight the station, turned myself in to a group of officers and woke up.

Even as I told my wife of this dream on that June night I saw the funny side of it and couldn’t help but laugh along with her. At the same time I still cannot begin to comprehend what strange, twisted part of my psyche cooked that dream up. In fact, though I wouldn’t call it a nightmare, it felt so unlike any other dream I can remember having I feel like there should be some third label I could apply to it with greater accuracy. ‘Sleeping hallucination’ seems about right to me given how vivid the dream was and the fact that never once did I question my identity as a middle-aged Scottish woman with dreams of being a famous singing star.

At this point enough people have heard this bizarre story that, in turn, I’ve heard all the obvious and often crude jokes of a psychiatric and psychoanalytic bent about what it reveals about me. I’m not worried about whether the dream had some deeper meaning but a big part of me still considers the entire experience and can only respond with a shake of the head and wonder “What the hell was that all about anyway?”

Still, at least I didn’t dream I was Louis Walsh.

Economy is basically economy whichever airline or aircraft you fly but on a recent trip to Beijing via Dubai on Emirates there was a little twinkle in cattle class as night fell two hours out of Gatwick enroute to Asia. The new 777 has a surprinsgly sensuous lighting system which dims the cabin through a series of ambient shades of yellow, orange and blue while dots of tiny constellation LED’s glimmer on the ceiling. More sophisticated than sticky glo-stars in a bedroom and not as impressive as the Greenwich Planetarium, nonetheless the 777’s lightshow was an unexpected highlight in the humdrum of eight hours of Economy.

Relaxing the seat-back, an operation that normally brings frustrated noises from the person behind and only slightly eases sleep, also was a little different as I found myself being tipped gently into the seat and head-rest an inch or two more than I’ve experienced before. I can’t say I slept like a baby but it is the first time I have ever got shut-eye on long haul. Maybe the introduction of a few child’s mobiles in addition to the night lights would work. Now there is something to think about Boeing.

By Shaun Milne PASSENGER numbers have nose-dived at one of Scotland’s best known low-cost airports.

By Shaun Milne

PASSENGER numbers have nose-dived at one of Scotland’s best known low-cost airports.

Glasgow Prestwick Airport said the number of people travelling through the Ayrshire hub are down 28 per cent year on year.

The plunge – to 152,000 passengers – was dismissed as being “in line with recent trends”.

But bosses are now pinning their hopes on winter-sun flights and summer bookings for 2010 to help see them through the recession.

Graeme Sweenie, chief commercial officer, admitted: “2009 has certainly been a challenging year for the airport.

Insisting that the airport’s prospects remained “excellent”, he pointed to the fact that operator Ryanair had recently laid on more winter flights as being a positive sign.

He added: “These new destinations are a huge vote of confidence in Glasgow Prestwick by Europe’s largest low fares airline.

Capacity

“The summer 2010 schedule is now on sale to over thirty destinations.”

“We understand that competing airlines at Glasgow Airport have reduced their capacity for summer 2010, so our strategy of being Scotland’s year-round gateway to sun, sea and sangria is working well for us, and hurting our competitors.”

Earlier this month figures released by aviation consultancy RDC Aviation showed that Britain’s 33 busiest airports had all reported lower figures for the first eight months of the year than previously.

British traveller are taking nine per cent fewer flights overall, it said, with Gatwick in London the biggest loser, seeing passenger traffic down by two million.

Well, who would think it. Sesame street is 40 years old this week.

As part of the celebrations even google search engine is helping spread the word with a whole week of google search cartoons incorporating some of the characters from the street, such as Bert and Ernie, Cookie Monster and The Count.

There is also some very special guests including Michelle Obama again.

My favourites from the programe when it was on TV in the UK was The Count and of course the Cookie Monster.

Can you count how many cookie monsters there are?

The program was successful in the UK, but probably annoyed some adults when children started using amercian and spanish words for everday items such as water, insisting it was aqua, or indeed promouncing Zee rather than the English Zed.

The UK was not against the characters in total and over the years Sesame Street existed on various channels, however, it had no way of competing with the Muppet show, the stranger and less educational fun show, featuring a couple of the Muppets from the street but mainly a whole new crew.

Still, it’s something to ponder over.

What has this got to do with Airport Parking or Hotels. With Compare Airport Parking’s use of reviews and ratings, we hope we can find you a high quality parking site that is not run by Muppets. Sorry, it’s a loose link, but hey, it works

To check reliable airport parking, visit compare airport parking, and search amongst loads of car parks at various UK airports.

Some people are aware of the name by word of mouth, some are aware by previous stays, but how many of you have recently stayed at the Russ Hill Hotel at Gatwick Airport?

19th century architecture is obvious from the front of the Russ Hill

The impressive front entrance of the hotel is the first hint of a lovely old school type of hotel. This particular hotel is one of the “Life Hotels”, a collection of 3 star properties, each one is individual in character offering friendly and efficient service in comfortable surroundings conveniently located off major road networks, easy to find with ample car parking.

Rooms at the Russ Hill

The Russ Hill Hotel accommodation near Gatwick offers 130 Bedrooms including family rooms and Honeymoon Suites. Our 3 star hotel is located in a historical 19th century manor house and so each of our rooms is unique. Our hotel rooms near Gatwick are decorated with cosy wood panelling and fresh modern interiors.

The 3 star Gatwick accommodation features:

    * En-suite bathroom
* TV
* Direct dial telephone
* Tea and coffee making facilities
* Hairdryer

Now, for a one night stay before disappearing from our shores on a plane bound for some exotic location, the overall look and feel of this hotel seems great. The prices for a one night stay with parking sound fantastic and are possibly some of the cheapest available in the area.

However, I want to know more about your personal experiences. Is the hotel as nice as it looks?, what are the rooms like?, what was it like transferring to the airport?. I am interested in all experiences good and bad. I am even planning a small trip up to the Russ Hill at Gatwick myself to have my own personal experience.

To book the Russ Hill hotel, or any other hotels at Gatwick, why not take a look at our website. You can search for both room only or with parking for the duration of your holiday, take a look at the prices, you will be surprised.

Yesterday, I went to the travel agent to buy my National Express ticket to Gatwick; the final link in the chain to get me to France next month. The only minor inconvenience is the long wait at Gatwick. The last bus gets in just before midnight, the flight leaves first thing in the morning’; not quite long enough to justify booking into a hotel for the night … and the ‘Yotel’ capsule hotel I posted about a couple of years ago is way too expensive.

Nearly £70 to get a couple of hours’ horizontal shut-eye isn’t really on! But, I have a couple of books and podcasts I want to catch up on.

***

I’m going to Carcassonne as the guest of ‘French House Party’ (www.frenchhouseparty.co.uk) . The ‘parties’ take place in a renovated 200-year-old farmhouse, and are really courses in all sorts of creative arts. It was named ‘Top Learning Retreat’ in National Geographic’s ‘The 100 Best World-Wide Vacations to Enrich Your Life’ in 2008, and the courses on offer include Creative Writing , Books and Drama, Art and Mixed Media, Sketch, Paint and Stitch, Digital Film-making, ‘Find Your Voice and the Courage to Sing’ … if anyone can get me to sing tunefully when I’m sober, it has my vote! … and ‘GASTROACADEMY’. And, that list is by no means exhaustive.

I’ll be attending, and reporting on the launch of the ‘Gastroacademy’ … an introduction to French cuisine, over a long weekend. It doesn’t aim to make you a cordon bleu chef in that time (at least, I hope it doesn’t). But, we will be doing some cooking, rather than standing around, observing, making notes and looking writerly. We’ll also be taken to the local market, and told how to select the best ingredients.

If you’re in Britain, and want to see more of what ‘French House Party’ have to offer, they’ll be at the BBC Good Food Show at London’s Olympia 13th-15 November 2009 and at Birmingham’s NEC 25-29 November 2009.

British Airways literally went the extra mile last week with a wonderful birthday gift for a rather special 18-year-old – a First Class flight to Australia.

The generous present was in celebration of Shona Owen’s historic birth in 1991, when she was born six weeks premature on a BA flight as it came into land at Gatwick Airport.

Shona is the only UK citizen whose passport reads ‘Born on an aeroplane, ten miles south of Mayfield, Sussex’ and was given the first class tickets to anywhere in the world. “I was a bit too young to appreciate all the luxuries of BA’s First Class service last time,” she said.

We think very much a case of “Born in the Unlimited Sky of British Airways!”

British Airways is launching its thrice-weekly direct non-stop services from Gatwick to Sharm El Sheikh from October 26, 2009. This signifies a return for the airline’s colours to this popular Red Sea resort, with the new direct non-stop London Gatwick flights to Sharm El Sheikh departing on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

As well as the new flights to Sharm El Sheikh, British Airways will also be adding The Maldives to its already extensive network. Richard Tams, British Airways’ head of UK & Ireland sales, said: “These new routes will be great assets to the BA network and a real winner with customers. They are both perfect holiday destinations, known for their great beaches and fantastic diving. We’re particularly pleased to be serving a completely new destination, the Maldives, and returning to Sharm El Sheikh. We expect both routes to perform well.”

Holidays in Sharm El Sheikh have proved popular with tourist for years due to their promise of sun-filled days on the beach and spotting turtles on the coral reefs, as well as offering the ability to explore the desert by camel and spend the nights feasting on traditional Bedouin food and stargazing.

British Airways have a number of superb Sharm El Sheikh hotels – all with easy access to beautiful beaches. The range of hotels in Sharm El Sheikh includes something for everyone ranging from 3 to 5*. Romantics can pamper themselves at the 4*+ Grand Rotana ideally located on the shores of Sharks Bay. The 4* all inclusive Hilton Sharks Bay Resort offers fun for the whole family, or for pure relaxation and a round of golf there is the 5* Maritim Jolie Ville Golf and Resort.

Web Oficial: www.derbyhotels.com

Ciudad: Londres (Reino Unido)
