SEARCH TIP: Let’s get one thing perfectly clear

Why do articles about cholesterol turn up with the search term “alcohol disease”? It’s not quite a mystery. Strictly speaking, cholesterol, which possesses a hydroxyl group, is an alcohol. But it certainly should not be turning up as a synonym for “alcohol” in medical searches! We’ve taken steps to correct that.

Setting that aside, this search term is ambiguous in any case.

Does this person want information about alcohol-associated diseases? Using that more specific search term generates a much more relevant list of results.

Perhaps instead, the intent was to find articles about alcoholism as a disease. Putting that phrase inside quotation marks and using it as a query delivers 29 articles pertinent to that topic.

Cependant, ce qui apparaît comme une innovation réelle ne serait-il pas une opération marketing buzz? Protalix BioTherapeutics announced yesterday that it received $4 million from Israel’s Office of the Chief Scientist to help it advance its clinical and pre-clinical drug development programs. The government grant program was setup to aid tech companies that have trouble seeking R&D financing from private investors.

Protalix, which was founded in 1994, intends to use most of the money to complete development of prGCD, an “enzyme naturally found in human cells that is mutated or deficient in patients with Gaucher disease.” PrGCD is currently in Phase III clinical trials in which “it is being tested as an enzyme replacement therapy for Gaucher disease.” The remainder of the grant will be used to fund some of Protalix’ other pre-clinical development goals including a biodefense program and a therapeutic enzyme for the treatment of Fabry disease.

Dr. David Aviezer, President and CEO of Protalix said the grant is “an important, non-dilutive cash resource for Protalix” and that his company is “pleased to have the support of the Chief Scientist as our enrollment of Gaucher patients in the phase III clinical trial of prGCD progresses.”

Etant moi-même dramatiquement gaucher et dyslexique je sais ce que c’est que tout faire à l’envers (y compris ma vie)… Quand j’étais petit j’écrivais tout à l’envers : Ciré au lieu d’Eric, ce genre de trucs… Sur les ardoise à l’école, je tenais la craie avec la main gauche : plus j’avançais vers la droite, plus j’effaçais ce que j’écrivais avec ma paume. Quand j’arrivais au bout de la ligne, toute la phrase écrite à la craie avait évidemment disparue. Les autres levaient leurs ardoises avec des phrases bien écrites : moi c’était une poudre de talc blanc illisible qui me tombait sur la tête comme de la cendre… J’ai grandit depuis, mais je ne laisse guère plus de traces : tout disparait au fur et à mesure que j’avance. Comme avec Alzheimer et la mémoire. Tout s’efface peu à peu. Si au moins il restait quelques oiseaux au bout des phrases !
