rufus2Want Two contains a lot of ambitious and emotional music: album opener ‘Agnus Dei’ is a string-drenched, hyper-passionate Catholic hymn performed in Latin; closer ‘Old Whore’s Diet’ is a 9-minute epic alternating between a capella crooning and Mediterranean dance beats; ‘Little Sister’ is a baroque treat that, stripped of its vocals, would sound like it was written in the early 18th century.

But the song I love the most of all is the simplest tune on the album — the acoustic stroll of ‘Gay Messiah.’

I love this song on three levels. First, it’s just incredibly pretty. The studio version is particularly fine but this live performance captures it nicely too. The flighty backing vocals, meandering bass and gentle acoustic guitar add up to a kind of French cabaret sound I just love.

Second, the lyrics are so subversively dirty. The play on “Rufus the Baptist” and someone demanding his head, which he promises to “kneel down and give” … double entendre at its finest. The vision of the gay messiah stepping out of a 70s porn film “wearing tube socks with style and such an innocent smile” is hilarious and sweet at the same time.

Finally, without trying to be in the least, this is really a political anthem, rubbing the religious right’s faces in their hypocrisy and bigotry. I imagine this gay messiah will return to offer eternal bliss to the enlightened and the promise of salvation to those who are willing to own up to the sin of their homophobia. Now that’s an apocalypse I can root for!

Rufus has just completed a critically-acclaimed World Tour in order to “Release the Stars” and I think he may have done just that if the fireworks both literal and figurative that were exploding last night onstage at his sold out Radio City Music Hall show are anything to go by. A St Valentine’s Day massacre of the senses. It was so much fun. (The NYC Fire Commissioner even came by to sign off on the gunpowder plot.) You’d think he’d have been more than a little nervous playing that cavernous artdeco museum to the Rockettes but he was as relaxed as a koala bear grazing in a gum tree. Of course he did just return from the land of Oz. I’m not saying he didn’t have his Tasmanian devilish moments (singing “Gay Messiah” in his in-drag Judy G. outfit where his band who normally dress in tuxes for this number awkwarkly act out the swooning male dance routines. As a special surprise to him celebrating the end of the tour they came out dressed as nuns playing funky old stringless banjos and ukes ‘a la singing nun’ all the while spraying him with what looked like cheese to drive home the outrageous “baptized in come” lyric. It was madness. Do I disappoint you? never and you will always be the most Beautiful Child. Mirror, mirror.. Mommie Kate McGarrigle and little sister Martha W. joined him for an emotionally-charged version of Kate’s panoramic ode to the U.S. of A. “Talk to me of Mendocino.” Rufus’s “Poses” was among one of the many exquisite moments. Sean Lennon and band opened last night’s extravaganza with some very interesting melodic stuff and was joined late in his set by his girlfriend and co-writer Charlotte and together they sang a moving song about the revenge of the sabre-toothed tiger where man does not fare well. Come uppance time. Everybody was on stage for John Lennon’s “Across the Universe.”

For the record, Rufus has been nominated for a Brit Award in the best male performer cat. And this quote from an Aussie paper just came in from a friend in Adelaide ‘Incredibly talented troubadour Rufus Wainwright, is one of the most splendid live talents on the planet right now.’

In case you haven’t heard, Idaho is now famous for more than just potatoes and “I da ho”, now having a sex scandal to call its own. Senator Larry Craig was recently exposed to have plead guilty to lewd conduct in a bathroom while making a stop at the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport. How this happened in June and is only reported now is beyond me, but I’m glad to see major news outlets grill a man whose appearances at my high school were frequently key noted by anti-sex tirades and arguments for why motorcyclists shouldn’t have to wear helmets (an unrelated pet peeve of mine). You can read more about the incident at Slate where they kindly post the police report and engage in some amusing commentary about Craig’s foot tapping in the bathroom.

“Do I disappoint you?” sang Rufus Wainwright last night at the Eden Project in Cornwall.   Most certainly not is the emphatic response from this attendee.  Quite simply, Rufus and his band were magnificent.

Resplendent in his lederhosen, Rufus hit the ground running with a flawless rendition of “Release The Stars”, the title track from his new album.    It was this album that much of the setlist was culled from, with highlights including superb renditions of “Going To A Town”, “Tiergarten”, “Sanssouci”, “Between My Legs”, and the quite brilliant “Rules And Regulations”.

The audience showed their great appreciation by maintaining a respectful silence during the quieter tracks like “Nobody’s Off The Hook” and “Leaving For Paris No 2″. 

Despite mainly being a showcase for the new album, pleasingly a few tracks from ‘Want One’ were also aired.  These included “14th Street”, “Beautiful Child”, “The Art Teacher”, and an incredible version of “I Don’t Know What It Is”.  On their own, these tracks would have made the whole night worthwhile.   As it was, they were just more highlights during a whole series of highlights.

Returning for an encore in his dressing gown,  Rufus put on some lipstick and jewellery to play us out with a Judy Garland number, followed by the closer “Gay Messiah”.  Awesome. 

I came home in a bright orange t-shirt that declares that ‘Rufus, Rufus, Rufus’ is  the ‘world’s greatest entertainer’.  On the evidence of last night, it is difficult to disagree.

For the sake of accuracy (which, admittedly, we aren’t big fans of around here – i.e. dragon bones), I must offer a rubuttal to Johnbaptisedme’s earlier post about Rufus Wainwright.

1. The revered editor suggested that Wainwright’s attending the opera three times a week was pretentious and possibly a lie. Let it be noted that the Metropolitan Opera recently commissioned Wainwright to write an original opera. So yes, he’s really into opera. Almost like someone who writes operas would be.

2. He does not consider himself the Messiah. For proof, I direct you to the lyrics of the song “Gay Messiah”:

No, it will not be me
Rufus the Baptist I be
No, I won’t be the one
Baptized in cum

Clearly, he does not believe that he is Jesus. He just wants to annoint the risen Messiah with his love juices. I think this is an impulse we all share.

And anyway, “John Baptised Me,” is it possible that someone is calling the kettle black?

3. Holy, sweet, merciful fuck. Beyonce actually does suck. She’s just not a good musician. Her songs catchy, it’s true. And I agree with Rufus that it has more to do with modern pop music being more of a science than an art. We’ve all heard the stories of Rivers Cuomo sitting in a windowless room deconstructing Nirvana songs until they are naught but mathematical formulas.

It’s not Beyonce’s fault that she sucks, and you can’t logically blame Rufus either. You can only blame our inordinately low standards.

4. For some good songs, I direct you to Hallelujah (a cover), Vibrate, 14th Street, Go or Go Ahead, California, and my very favorite, Oh What A World. You don’t get much better in terms of classically-influenced composition, vocal control, pre-mature middle age crises and gay wit. Bitch makes me want to take my pants off.
