The mean temperature has been shown correct to one decimal point in the record whereas figures for 2007 are shown in round figures. So I have rounded off the mean temp. figures too, for proper comparison.

Except in a few cases, there is remarkable similarity in temperature recorded 200 years ago and now ! This exposes the fallacy of global warm-mongers. In big cities like bombay the increase in temp may be due to huge concrete forests constructed and this can in no way be called global.

ANALYSIS OF TEMPERATURE DATA

Figures speak the truth. The temperature data, comparing previous periods with the current period in respect of Indian and foreign cities are available in the statements above. Statement-1 shows temperature of Indian cities (both coastal and inland).

These have been collected from the meteorological department library at Mausam Bhawan, Delhi.

You will see that in the cities mentioned below, the temperature has remained stable during the last 50 years.

Bhuj, Bhawnagar, Surat, Punjim, Honavar, Alapuzha, Kakinada, Port Blair, Vishakhapatnam, Kolkata (temperature has actually decreased by 3 degrees), Bhubneswar (decreased by 3 degrees), Ajmer, Pune, Bangalore, Agartala, Alhabad, Kota, Madurai, Koimbature, Kolhapur, Udaipur, Nagpur.

The increase in temperature by 5 degrees in Mumbai is glaring, especially when we see the temperature in Surat remaining stable. In other words, for Mumbai the reasons my be local and not global. This requires investigation. My guess is that the huge increase in concrete buildings in Mumbai has contributed to the increase in temperature.

So far, I have been speaking about the maximum temperature. A scrutiny of the minimum temperatures reveals a certain trend of distinct increase.

Bhuj, Bhavnagar, Mumbai, Ajmer, Pune, Hyderabad, Udaipur and Kanpur show increase in minimum temperature by 3 degree. If you total the minimum temperatures of all the cities, then and now, there is an increase of 20degrees in respect of 15 inland stations whereas the maximum temperature in respect of the same stations show a decrease of 8 degrees. It should be remembered that the minimum temperature are recorded during winter months (December, January) when the sun is far away in the Southern hemisphere and this cannot be assigned to the heat radiated from the sun. Mr. Milner has also written about the winter becoming milder over a period of time. In my younger days, I use to find it difficult to take bath in cold water in winter in Delhi. Now, excepting some days of severe cold mostly caused by heavy snowfall in the Himalayas, the water is not so cold. The obvious inference is that this is actually global defreezing caused by geothermal energy.

Statement 2 shows temperature variation over a wider period of 200 years. The figures for the previous period have been taken from Milner’s book which was published in 1853. As these figures are in Fahrenheit scale, current figures too are shown in the same scale. The figures in respect of the following stations indicate stability.

Cairo, Algiers, Cincinnati, New York, Beijing (decrease of 3 degree), Paris Dublin, Copenhagen (decrease of 6 degree), Quebec, Petersburg, Bordeaux, Vienna (decrease of 4 degrees) – 12 out of 20 cities. London, Geneva and Paris show exceptional increase. However, it should be remembered that the increase is over a period of 200 years.

A word of caution: the current data have been extracted from the website “World Weather Information Service” and so the authenticity has to be verified independently.

A very reliable and scientific method for evaluation of the temperature of the globe, is latitude wise mean temperatures. Milner’s book shows 29 degree centigrade at equator, gradually and linearly decreasing to zero degree centigrade at the poles. I am unable to get corresponding figures for the current period. However, I could see from the website that figures remain almost constant, even though the figures for the polar region, now shows as approaching minus 20 degree centigrade. This may be due to better technology being employed by scientific team exploring the polar regions. I have calculated the value of current mean temperatures in respect of a few stations, comparing this value with that shown in Milner’s book. These are given in statement 3.

MELTING OF POLAR ICE CAP

The density of water at zero degrees centigrade is 0.9999 grams per cm. The density of ice at zero degree centigrade is 0.9150. In other words, 1 cc of ice weights only 0.91 gm and hence will displace only 0.915cc of water, when the ice is floating in water. When the ice float, almost the whole of body sinks below the surface of water, expect a small portion projecting above the surface. In the North Pole area, there is no land. The crust of the earth forms a huge bowl filled with seawater and a huge mass of ice floating in it just like an ice cube placed in a bowl of water. The volume of ice submerged below the ice may be almost 9 times more than the icecap which we observe above the surface of water. The molecules covering the underwater portion of the icecap absorb heat from the sea water in which it floats and melt into water. This is a continuous process happening round the clock, allover the year, irrespective of summer or winter. As I have explained in my booklet, the necessary energy is supplied by the earth itself. The role of the Sun which shines only for a limited period is too insignificant to have any impact on this process. As the density of water is more than that of ice, the volume of water generated by the melting of ice is less than that of water originally occupied by the ice block in the ratio 9999:9150. Therefore the sea level will actually come down because of the melting process. In practice, this may not happen because of the continuous deposition of snow in the polar region which will continuously push down the ice cap.

A lot has been talked about the rising of sea level because of Global warming. This is a misconception. In some places, the sea level goes up and in other places, it recedes. This phenomenon has been extensively discussed in Milner’s geography.

My contention can be tested by a simple experiment. Place ice cubes in a tumbler and fill it with water until the water overflows. Leave it until all the ice melts. Watch for any overflow of water during this process.

I quote from Milner-page-513

Excessive summers

In 763 the summer was so hot that the springs dried up.

In 870 the heat was so intense ,that near Worms the reapers dropped dead in the fields.

In 993 and again in 994,it was so hot that the corn and fruits were burnt up.

The year 1000 was so hot and dry ,that, in Germany ,the pools of water disappeared ,and the fish ,being left in the mud ,bred pestilence.

In 1022 the heat was so excessive ,that both men and cattle were struck dead.

In 1130 the earth yawned with drought. Springs and rivers disappeared ,and even the Rhine was dried up in Alsace.

In 1159 not a drop of rain fell in Italy after the month of May.

The year 1171 was extremely hot in Germany.

In 1232 the heat was so great ,especially in Germany, that it is said that eggs were roasted in the sands.

In 1260 ,many of the Hungarian soldiers died of excessive heat at the famous battle fought near Buda.

The consecutive years of 1276 and 1277 were so hot and dry as to occasion a great scarcity of fodder.

The years 1293 and 1294 were extremely hot ;and so were likewise 1303 and 1304,both the Rhine and the Danube having dried up.

In 1333 the corn fields and vineyards were burnt up.

The years 1393 and 1394 were excessively hot and dry.

In 1447 the summer was extremely hot.

In the successive years 1473 and 1474 the whole earth seemed on fire. In Hungary , a person might wade across the Danube

The four consecutive years 1538, 1539 ,1540 ,and 1541 were excessively hot ;and the rivers dried up.

In1556 the drought was so great that the springs failed. In England wheat rose from 8 shillings to 53 shillings a quarter.

The years 1615 and 1616 were very dry all over Europe.

In 1646 it was excessively hot.

In1652 the warmth was very great, the summer being the driest ever known in Scotland. A total eclipse had happened that year, on Monday the 24th of March,which hence received the appellation of ‘Mirk Monday.’

The summer of 1679 was extremely hot.It is related ,that one of the minions tyranny ,who in that calamitous period, harassed the poor Presbyterians in Scotland with captious questions, having asked a shepherd in Fife ,whether the killing of a notorious Sharp, Archbishop of St.Andrews, which had happened in May,was murder; he replied , that he could not tell, but there had been fine weather ever since.

The year 1700 was excessively warm, and the two following years were of the same description.

In 1718 the weather was extremely hot and dry all over Europe. The air felt so oppressive that all the theatres were shut in Paris. Scarcely any rain fell for the space of nine months and the springs and rivers were dried up. The following year was equally hot. The thermometer at Paris rose to 98 degree Fahrenheit. The grass and corn were quite parched.

In some places the fruit trees blossomed two and three times.

Both the years 1723 and 1724 were dry and hot.

The year 1745 was remarkably warm and dry; but the following year was still hotter insomuch that the grass withered, and the leaves dropped from the trees .Neither rain nor dew fell for several months ; and ,on the continent, prayers were offered up in all the churches to implore the bounty of refreshing showers.

In 1748 the summer was again very warm.

In 1754 it was likewise extremely warm.

The years 1760 and 1761 were both of them remarkably hot, and so was the year 1763.

In 1774 it was excessively hot and dry.

Both the years 1778 and 1779 were warm and very dry.

The year 1788 was also very hot and dry ;and of the same character was 1811 ,famous for its excellent vintage, and distinguished by the appearance of a brilliant comet.

Seperti halnya posisi pria, maka posisi wanita diatas jiga menjadi salah satu posisi favorit banyak

Seperti halnya posisi pria, maka posisi wanita diatas jiga menjadi salah satu posisi favorit banyak pasangan.

“The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because o

“The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don’t do anything about it. “

This quote by Albert Einstein holds true for a place like Gaya/Bodh Gaya (from now I will denote the word Gaya as a representative of both the places Gaya and Bodh Gaya).
So, “Gaya: on the minus” is all about being one of the the filthiest city in the world. I do wonder, if there wouldn’t have been the temples and statues would anyone even think of going there?
Definitely not!
Thinking again, would there be so much filth if the temples and statues wern’t there?
Why think of something which if changed would change about 3000 years of history!?

Hence, Gaya is filthy, as all holy places in India are filthy. Go to any of them and the sites you see are the same. Dirt, filth, garbage, urine and faecal stench everywhere. Wonder how tourists still visit these places! (I would really like an answer)

The next “minus” in Gaya are the potholes. These potholes might just make those huge ones in Mumbai look like smooth ones. In Gaya, if you are traveling in a vehicle, don’t expect to be sitting normally. You will be jumping on your seat, sliding down the seat, pushing back and forward on the seat; everything, but sitting on the seat. My Mom swears that all the extra food she had during breakfast was all digested in a mere 15 mins ride in a Gaya auto (for the record these autos have the word “Piaggio” written on the back).
When asked when would the problem of road “blocks” be solved? The only answer I get is – “It is much better than it used to be!”

What answer is that?!!!

Anyways, hoping Gaya becomes a beautiful city because if Lord Buddha would have lived to this day he would definitely have killed himself by now!

Next on the list are certain people, namely – beggars (in both Vishnupad and Bodh Gaya) and pandits (in Vishnupad). I experienced this sad site of a foreigner being pestered for money, ice cream or whatever they desire. Being somebody who just hates the idea of begging, I was outraged seeing the sight. Every morsel of energy at those times were spent in keeping myself from doing something bad to those 15 month old to 70 year old ages whose primary bread earning is from these tourists who innocently give hard earned money to these nincompoops who hate doing some worthwhile work.
The pandits are beggars, but of a different, ‘higher’, form. They will demand money because doing that, as they say, will make God happy and He will “bless” you with more money. Don’t get me wrong, I am religious (in my own way) and have a lot of faith in the Supreme Being. But I do not like the idea of “warming” the hands of these men of the highest order of society (Brahmins). Brahmins were supposed to be the most learned men in ancient times. Does learning mean asking for money in the name of God? What kind of learning do they do nowadays?
Giving money as per our wish is called donation or offering. But giving money when somebody asks you to give in their hand, is called begging in my dictionary.

Pandits waiting for some "hand warming" after my parents finish with their puja in Vishnupad Mandir

That is it about Gaya/Bodh Gaya: on the minus. Next would be the better things about this place.

Namanya The, seorang Tionghoa warga negara Indonesia.

’’Mengapa istri para polisi selalu cantik-cantik?’’ tanya Bung Karno tiba-tiba. Semua yang mendengarkan tidak ada yang menjawab. Termasuk Mangil. Sejurus kemudian, Bung Karno bercerita.

I uploaded a couple of videos, more to come soon. They are located on the side of the page. One is funny, but both will make you laugh. Those Bonobos, wow.

I want to take a second to rant a little about some things.

As we become increasingly plugged into this technological world, the question asked is whether or not we are becoming less connected in a real intimate sense. In my Social Psychology class today we were discussing online dating and the stigmas attached to it by society. One girl mentioned that her mother had found apparent love online on eHarmony, they were together for 3 years. Her father apparently tries it too with mixed results. We noted as a class that most of the stigmas have dissapated in only a matter of 6 months to a year. It’s not just for “people who can’t meet regular people” anymore. I made the point that in a physical meeting, we judge based on the person’s physical appearance and ask questions later. But with an extensive number of questions and ways to calculate compatability, there seems to be some worth in the online dating scene for some people.

We’ve also talked about shyness in the class. Apparently shyness is on the rise in today’s American society. It is suggested that there is a connection between shyness and our dependence on technology and less face-face interaction. And maybe they’re right. I know all my wasted time in high school on my computer instead of hanging out with friends certainly has hindered my social abilities at later dates.

It’s becoming easier and easier for me to see and understand how all the inhabitants of this planet are connected. People tend to put the homo sapien on such a pedestal, rising above all other creatures tall and small. Yet the more I research into evolution and the like, I’m beginning to think that we as a species are merely a freak set of genetic mutations over time. There is nothing special about us. We are inhabitants of this earth and we need to start taking better care of this place. I’ve been reading about the Gaya theory and Daisyworld simulation as well, very intriguing stuff. It kinda blows your mind a little. The more I read and research, the more I realize that calling my high school experience “education” would be belittling the word. Usually I end up finding out that everything I had thought was correct in the world isn’t correct at all. What a world this would be if everyone realized how grey the lines really are. Nothing is black and white.

Here’s some songs/bands I’ve been listening to this week:

Regina Spektor – Far (album) – I like her more with every album. She manages to evolve with each song. She is a master of melody.

Cold War Kids – Something Is Not Right With Me (song) – Great band, great song, album, etc. The frenetic pace of this song kinda puts you on edge when you are listening to it. It’s one of their fastest songs that I’ve heard.

Phoenix – Lisztomania (song) – Great album too. Just getting into these guys. I kept hearing this song on the radio and had to get the album.

Miss Li – (entire catalog) – Wow. This is how pop should sound. Urgent, creatively melodic, beautiful voice. Let’s hope she doesn’t sell out too bad once people realize how great she is.

That’s all for now. Next time I think I’ll talk about “The Era of Awkward”. And maybe some racial relations within the National Football League.

GAYA

PERAN GAYA:

Gaya merupakan faktor yang penting dalam olahraga

Perlu diperhitungkan sumber gaya

Penggunaan secara tepat dan hemat

SUMBER GAYA:

BESAR GAYA:

Masa benda yang dikenai gaya dikalikan rata-rata perubahan gerakan persatuan waktu

Keterangan:

G  = gaya

t = time = lama waktu gaya bekerja

a   = acceleration = percepatan

g   = gravitasi

V  = velocity = kecepatan

m = masa benda yang dikenai gaya = berat benda

Contoh:

Diket : V = 40 m/dt

T = 0,1 dt

Berat bola = 0,5 kg

Jawab :

0,5

m = ———– = 0,05

10

0,05 x 40

G = —————- = 20 kg

0,1

Jika tempo (t) ditambah menjadi 0,05 dt maka:

0,05 x 40

G = ————— = 40 kg

0,05

HUKUM NEWTON

Hukum I: Hukum Kelembaman (law of inertia)

Hukum II: Hukum Percepatan (law of acceleration)

Hukum III: Hukum Reaksi (law of reaction)

HUKUM KELEMBAMAN (law of inertia)

HUKUM PERCEPATAN (law of acceleration)

HUKUM REKSI (law of reaction)

Berapa jauh A dapat menggeser B?

R<sup>2 </sup>= A<sup>2</sup> + B<sup>2</sup>

  = 10.000 + 22.500

= 32.500

R   =   32.500  = 180 kg

B          150

cos β = ——– = ——– = 0,8333

R          180

β = 34<sup>0</sup> (tabel)

R<sup>2 </sup>= A<sup>2</sup> + B<sup>2 </sup>– 2 AB cos α

  = 10.000 + 22.500 – 30.000 x 0,866

= 6.520

R   =    6.520  = 80,7 kg

Untuk mencari sudut β digunakan rumus:

A<sup>2 </sup>= R<sup>2</sup> + B<sup>2 </sup>– 2 AB cos β

10.000 = 6.520 + 22.500 – 24.210 cos α

29.020 -10,000       19.020

cos β = ——————— = ———– = 0,7856

24.210                 24.210

β = 38<sup>0</sup> (tabel)

Aplikasi Dalam Olahraga:

Sikap Saat Melakukan Start Yang Paling Efektif:

A                                             B

540 720

SISTEM PENGUNGKIT

JENIS-JENIS PENGUNGKIT:

Jenis Pengungkit I:

Sumbu putaran terletak antara beban dan gaya

G                                 S                                  B

Contoh jenis pengungkit I:

Contoh Jenis Pengungkit II:

Jenis Pengungkit III:

Gaya terletak antara beban dan sumbu putaran

Contoh Jenis Pengungkit III:

KEUNTUNGAN SISTEM PENGUNGKIT

Makin panjang tangan gaya makin besar moment gaya (memukul bola softball)

Makin pendek tangan gaya makin kecil moment gaya, tetapi gerakannya makin cepat (berlari)

MOMENT GAYA

Moment gaya = beban x tangan moment

SUMBU PUTAR

v Sumbu putar dalam gerak manusia:

Sendi pinggul (langkah lari), sendi bahu (memukul)

Togok pada saat awalan lempar cakram

Togok saat memukul bola soft ball

Palang tunggal (giant swing)

Bagaiman jika tangan moment diperpendek?

Bagaimana jika tangan moment diperpanjang?

Berapa kecepatan linier cakram?

V = 25,23 x 90 = 22,71 m/dt

Jika radius diperpanjang menjadi 100 cm, maka:

V = 25,23 x 100 = 25,23 m/dt

Besarnya gaya sentrifugal:

B x V 2

G = ————-

g x r

G = gaya sentrifugal                                       g = grafitasi

B = berat badan pelari                                     r = radius

V = kecepatan

Contoh:

Jawab:

70 x 102

G = ———— = 23,3 kg

10 x 30

Jika jari-jari tikungan 15 m, maka:

Jawab:

70 x 102

G = ———– = 46,7 kg

10     15

Materi kedua benda

Ketidak teraturan permukaan

Gaya yang menekan kedua benda

Luas permukaan kedua benda

BESARNYA GAYA GESER

P

C = ——

W

C = Besarnya gaya geser = sifat adhesif antara kedua benda

W = gaya yang menekan kedua permukaan

P = gaya yang diperlukan untuk memulai gerakan

Makin besar C maka makin kuat sifat adhesifnya

P

————- = tg α

W

Aplikasi Gaya Geser Dalam Olahraga

latihan: mengubah kecepatan, arah gerak, mencondongkan badan, memperluas permukaan geseran, latihan kekuatan otot-otot.

Memanfaatkan gaya geser dalam olahraga semaksimal mungkin:

Ski es

Ski salju

TUMBUKAN

Kegiatan Olahraga yang berkaitan dengan tumbukan:

memukul  bola softball

memukul bola voli

memukul bola tenis

memukul bola golf

ARAH GERAK PUKULAN

Arah gerak bola setelah dipukul tergantung dari sudut perkenaan

Sudut perkenaan = sudut pantulan

Tahanan udara

Elastisitas alat yang digunakan

ELASTISITAS

Semua benda mempunyai elastisitas (koefisien elastisitas)

RUMUS ELASTISITAS

Rumus untuk dua benda yang bersama-sama bergerak:

V2 – V1

e = —————-

U1 – U2

e   =<sub> </sub>koefisien elastisitas

V1 = kecepatan benda pertama setelah tumbukan

V2 = kecepatan benda kedua setelah tumbukan

U1= kecepatan benda pertama sebelum tumbukan

U<sub>2 </sub>= kecepatan benda kedua sebelum tumbukan<sub> </sub>

V

e = ———

U

hb

e = √———–

hd

e   =<sub> </sub>koefisien elastisitas

h<sub>b </sub>=<sub> </sub>tinggi benda memantul

h<sub>d </sub>=<sub> </sub>tinggi benda dijatuhkan<sub> </sub>

Pantulan Bola Basket:

Soal:

Diameter bola basket = 25 cm, dijatuhkan dari ketinggian 135 cm, berapa koefisien elastisitasnya?

Jawab:

Kecepatan bola setelah tumbukan:

V02

= ———

2g

V0<sup>2 </sup>= 2.g.St              St = 135 – 25 = 110 cm

= 2 x 10 x 1.10

= 22

V0 = 4,7 m/dt

Kecepatan bola sebelum tumbukan:

V0<sup>2 </sup>= 2.g.St              St = 180 cm

= 2 x 10 x 1.80

= 36

V0 = 6 m/dt

Jadi elastisitas Bola Basket tersebut adalah:

hb 110

e = √——– = √———– = 0,78

hd 180

  V  4,7

 e = —— = —— = 0,78

U          6

(m1 – em2) U1 + (1 + e) m2 . U2

V1 = ————————————————

m1 + m2

V1 = kecepatan bola setelah kena pukul

m<sub>1</sub>= massa pemukul

m<sub>1</sub>= massa bola

e  = koefisien elastisitas

U1= kecepatan bola sebelum kena pukul

U2= kecepatan pemukul sebelum kena bola

Contoh soal:

Bola dilempar dengan kecepatan 30 m/dt (U1), kecepatan pemukul 12 m/dt (U2). Berat pemukul 3,2 kg, berat bola 0,5 kg. Koefisien elastisitas bola 0,5. Berapakah kecepatan bola setelah kena pukul?

Jawab:

(0,32 – 0,5 . 0,05 )30 + (1 + 0,5) 0,05 x 12

V<sub>1</sub>= ——————————————————-

0,32 + 0,05

= 26,35 m/dt

Jika bola dilemparkan dengan kecepatan 15 m/dt, maka:

(0,32 – 0,5 . 0,05 )15 + (1 + 0,5) 0,05 x 12

V<sub>1</sub>= ——————————————————-

0,32 + 0,05

= 14,39 m/dt

Contoh:

Bola dilempar dengan kecepatan 15 m/dt (U1), kecepatan pemukul 20 m/dt (U2). Berat pemukul 3,2 kg, berat bola 0,5 kg. Koefisien elastisitas bola 0,5. Berapakah kecepatan bola setelah kena pukul?

Jawab:

(0,32 – 0,5 . 0,05 )15 + (1 + 0,5) 0,05 x 20

V<sub>1</sub>= —————————————————–

0,32 + 0,05

= 16,01 m/dt

2-4.11.2009

Day 1

We left Gangtok at 7am and took a shared 4wheel to Siliguri, which took us about five hours. From there we took a tuk-tuk to New Jalpaiguri train station, where we took an overnight train to Patna in Bihar state. In New Jalpaiguri we found a cute restaurant and had a lunch. The train station was very busy with lots of Indians travelling. We met a Belgian couple in their mid forties taking the same train as we did. We still had at least two hours before the train would arrive, so we had a long conversation with them. They were very chatty and Arne didn’t really feel like participating. It was a very hot day with little humidity. The train was half an hour late, so we left at around four in the afternoon. They stayed in a different carriage, so we didn’t meet them on the train. Getting into the train was very stressful. According to the rules, we supposed to have the number of the carriage and the seats printed on the ticket. Also the names of the passengers should be written on the paper attached to the outside of the train carriage. If your name doesn’t appear on the list you have to inform a conductor, who will check it and sort it out, otherwise your ticket is not valid even though you have one. What a strange rule. But the list on the carriage was from an old date and so we didn’t know if everything would be ok. The conductors said it should be ok, so we found our carriage S7, which they claimed was not the right one, because they had swooped S1 with S7 even though they still had S1 and S7 written on them. On the way to carriage S1 we asked another conductor about the carriage and they sent us back to S7. We finally came to our carriage and a guy from the food carriage asked us if we would like to have a dinner. We agreed about our dinner at seven o’clock. Then some Indian passenger with his whole big Indian family came from carriage S1 and claimed, that this is S1 and not the S7 because he was told that by the conductors. He was very rude shouting and sending us to the other carriage. Arne got annoyed and told him to speak like a normal person and not shout. We certainly are not used to this kind of manners in Europe. But Indians are like that, very short temper – hot headed. We were pretty fed up and moved again to the S1 carriage. When we thought it was all over a food department guy for the S1 came to ask us about the dinner. We told him we already ordered our dinner at the S7 carriage, but the guy from this carriage doesn’t know we moved. He assured us he will tell him and cancel our food at the other carriage , because now we are staying in his carriage. Right after that the food guy from the other carriage appeared bringing us the food, which we agreed he will bring at 7pm and it was only 4pm. We said we don’t want to have it, because we just ate and he supposed to bring it at 7pm. He got very aggressive and pushed us to get the meal. There was no way around when you looked at his completely mad eyes ready to kill us when we won’t take the food. We said we will take the meal when he will heat it for us at seven, because in three hours the food will be cold. We finally paid him and stuck our lunch boxes on the upper berth. One of the food men, I can’t really remember which one, left his wallet with 1000 rupees and his ID from the train department on the seat. I found it and we wanted to give it to him when we came back. There was one more guy serving a tea and he offered he will give it to him, so we handed the wallet to the guy. In one minute later the two food guys came running to our carriage shouting and asking for the wallet. We said we gave it to the guy with the tea. In the end we found out, that the guy with the tea doesn’t belong to the train food chain and he is just some guy jumping in the train at the one station and jumping off at the other selling his tea to the passengers. He obviously jumped off with the 1000 rupees and we handed the wallet to a thief. Shit!!!! Later on they came with four conductors blaming us for the wallet and investigating our motives. The guy who forced us to buy the food was pretty mad and Arne had the feeling he might even take revenge or steal something when we sleep. The conductor asked us what had happened and we told them the whole story about the tea man. The food people were still kind of chasing us, but the four conductors made it clear for them- stay away from these two foreigners otherwise you will get into big trouble. And they left us and we hadn’t seen them since. The one of the conductors checked our ticket and said we had to go back to the S7 carriage, because this one is S1. I think at this point we were pretty angry steaming like furious dragons ready to fight and shout. We told them, that we were shifted from one carriage to another since we got in and we are not willing to move anymore. But they were firm and persistent but also apologetic. I had enough and everything what has happened since we got in the train list, carriages, food, stolen wallet, investigation, anger, pushing, aggression so we just gave up and moved to the other carriage. We asked one of the conductors to come with us and explain it to the hot-headed guy with his big Indian family, because we didn’t want to get involved into a confrontation of any kind. Of course the guy got very furious shouting and screaming at the conductor. At least we didn’t have to do this. We finally got to the S7 carriage and stayed there until the end. We took a sleeper class which is a carriage with at least 36 berths, eight in each little open cabin. We took two upper ones and fell comfortably asleep with no more disturbances. And that was our first Indian train experience. I thought I don’t want to travel by train anymore!!!

Day 2

The next day we arrived to Patna train station which was full of homeless people sleeping everywhere on the floor outside and inside the train station. “ Good morning Ada and Arne, welcome to a brand new day”. Well I rather would be asleep, than at four o’clock at night at this place stinking of shit and people looking at us like we just landed on Earth from Mars. There were at least fifteen men around us in a split of second offering tuk-tuk shouting and fighting who will make it first. We were still half asleep, so we just wanted to punch them in their face so they could stop shouting and pushing us. But we were lucky enough to find a guy from Sikkim, who had to go the same way and spoke English and Hindi (Sikkim’s people speak Nepalese). He helped us with the whole journey to Bodhgaya. We took a shared tuk-tuk to the bus station and found the bus to Gaya. It was a very shabby, old, blue bus, ready to break down at any time. The amount of mosquitoes on the bus was unbearable, so we stayed out until the bus was ready to leave. I still needed to go to the toilet so I asked where the toilets were. People were pointing the direction at the end of the “bus station”. It wasn’t really a bus station just a square crowded with buses in the middle of fields with lots of people, dirt, tea stalls, a morning darkness and a dodgy feeling. I followed the direction together with Arne, because I really had to go to the toilet because it was a three hour journey without stopping. We couldn’t imagine any toilets there, but we carried on. We came to the end of this “bus station” and indeed there was a “toilet”. At least five men were squatting down and doing their morning poo in the middle of the field and showing their manhood tools to people who happened to be there. I stopped breathing being completely shocked what I saw. What the hell is that, how…how.. is that possible? How? How? I was standing there watching and not being able get it. Arne thought it was very funny. My urge to go to the toilet stopped, when I saw what they meant by the toilet. We went back to the bus with my mind shaking from this huge shock.

Patna is the capital city of Bihar, which is the poorest state in India and that’s what you could see everywhere. We got into the bus and were driving through Bihar we saw people peeing on the streets in front of many people and men squatting down next to the road in the grass field doing their “morning business” and showing their skinny bums, balls and willies to the whole world. I think this coffee is strong for even the strongest minds. Our minds were twisted in whole kinds of directions since we arrived to India, but this was just a brain fuse.

The countryside was quiet with rice fields and very poor villages. The houses were built from clay and straw with dirty people and children running around, goats and pigs and cows eating straw from big clay bowls. Inside the houses was nothing except clay tables, beds and benches. It looked like we were at the times of Christ in Jerusalem, 2000 years back. Everything was so surreal, so far away from our experiences of the world. I always dreamt to go back in time to see, how it was in the old days, but after seeing this I didn’t have to dream anymore. Everything was there in the clearest present. I would never think something like that could still exist in today’s world, but it does. Nothing has changed here, everything remained the same for another two thousands years. Crazy!!!

  When we arrived to Gaya, things weren’t different just a bit better. Gaya was a very poor town with lots of poverty showing everywhere you looked. Again the same dirt, streets, people and animals. We took another tuk-tuk to Bodhgaya, which dropped us in front of a Tibetan monastery, where the Sikkimese guy was planning to stay for meditation. We didn’t really like it over there, so we looked further. We ended up staying at the Bhutanese monastery, which was ok except there were lots of mosquitoes coming from the bathroom. After that we went eating in Mohammad’s restaurant, which was in the Lonely Planet and didn’t look appealing at first. But the food was great and the prices also. From there we went to take a look at the Holy Tree where Buddha attained enlightenment. But before that we passed a long street full of beggars leading towards it. The place was beautiful, filled with Buddhist people meditating, praying and exercising. There were Buddhist from all over the world; Japanese, Vietnamese, Nepalese, Tibetans, Thai and others. We had to pay for the camera, but the entrance was for free. We first strolled around the main temple where we watched people meditating. Then we saw the tree where the Buddha became enlightened. The tree was actually cut by the jealous King Ashoka’s wife, who couldn’t bare Ashoka’s attachment to the tree. He was so obsessed by the tree, he didn’t pay any attention to his wife anymore. But one branch of the tree was saved and brought to Sri Lanka, where it was replanted again. After many years Indians brought the branch from the same tree from Sri Lanka to Bodhgaya and planted this branch on the same place, where the original tree was. So by now the tree has grown into a giant tree spreading its branches in every direction. Many people were praying and meditating in front of the tree. Then we took a stroll around the main temple and inside of it. The inside wasn’t that interesting. After that we walked around from the other side with a big pond and a statue of the Buddha in the middle of the pond. We met some local guy, who wanted to show us around. We were suspicious at first, but later on we gave up. He also showed us some different ruins very nearby. He even walked back with us to the monastery we stayed. But this kindness came with a price. Of course he was so kind because he wanted to sell us a tour. But anyway it didn’t matter and even he insisted to meet tomorrow. And we said maybe. The rest of the day we spent in the monastery, where I was catching up with writing our blog. Arne was planning our next move.

Day 3

The next day we went again to Mohammad’s restaurant where we spent three hours talking to a monk from England. He had been practicing meditation for twelve years and coming to India every year for several months. He was in his early forties, maybe late thirties. It was a pleasure meeting him, because he was a very nice guy. We were talking about everything from travelling, meditation and marriage to alcoholism. We really enjoyed this pleasant morning. After that we went back to the monastery to pick up the laptop to upload our blog. The local guy from yesterday was standing in front of the monastery waiting for us to blame us, that he had been waiting for hours because we agreed to meet around ten with him. We obviously didn’t, which we told him so. Good try, a guy who is studying history at the university and when he finishes his university he would like to sell motorbikes. Right!!! We took our laptop and headed to the internet cafe. There we found out that we booked the ticket to Varanasi one day earlier than we thought. It meant that we had to leave this evening, which we thought would be tomorrow. We even paid two nights in the monastery. We didn’t have that much time anymore, so we ran back to the monastery to ask if it would be a problem to return our money for this night, because we had to leave. How could it be a problem in a monastery full of kind monks? They even offered us to leave our bags inside of the room, until we needed to leave. Thank you very much kind monks, we really appreciate it. After that we had to catch up with the sightseeing. First we saw a Japanese temple, which was very basic. Arne really liked it because of the minimalistic design, for me it was nothing special. He made lots of pictures of the temple. After that we went to see a big statue of the Buddha, which was the biggest Buddha statue we have seen so far. He was gigantic with his gigantic body and his gigantic head. There were four statues of reincarnations of Buddha on each side of the main statue. They looked more like guardians of the Buddha, than his own reincarnations. We walked around and we saw that under the right eye of the statue of Buddha was a big nest of birds. It looked like a big mole, which I found very funny. But it was very impressive, at least for me. From there we walked to the Indian Temple, which we ascended up the stairs. It was a very simple temple, but the stairs and the atmosphere around them was just beautiful. There was so much tranquility and peace, so much beauty. For a while we sat down on the stairs and watched things happening around. It was well spent time. After that we passed the Tibetan temple, not going inside. We saw so many Tibetan temples and they all look the same, so we didn’t go. As we were on our way to the Vietnamese temple, which was quite far to walk we passed a very poor area with lots of rubbish, straw-clay houses and people looking undernourished. On the same way we passed fields of rice, straw-clay houses, tons of cows and date trees sticking out high. The Vietnamese temple actually appeared to be the Black Hat Tibetan temple and inside there were little 4-14 years old monks. They were singing and praying and also receiving donations. As we understood they were Tibetan refugees, who made this ceremony for Vietnamese tourist we walked inside with. So it looked like we were the lucky ones to see this little ceremony with hundreds of little monks singing and the Vietnamese giving donations to every single little monk separately. It was a nice ceremony. After that we wanted to see the Vietnamese Temple, but it was closed. We had to make a long way back through the rice fields, tons of cows, people and transport again. We met Andrew, Lou and David from the Sikkim Trek in front of the Thai Temple. We made an arrangement for dinner together at six and a minute later found ourselves standing next to some mad guy with a cobra in a basket. He was talking to a crowd of audience he had and then he was twisting his hands into fists and putting them in front of the cobra, which sometimes got annoyed and with a very fast movement lashed out and tried to bite this old madman’s hands. He had a very fast reflex too, the cobra didn’t have a chance against him. He certainly knew what he was doing. After that we ate some Momos (Nepalese dumplings), for which we had to wait one and a half hour. People who came after us ate before us. It was quite frustrating. Cows, chickens, goats, dogs, people, busses, motorbikes, bikes, cars were passing through this small bus station, which we saw from the restaurant. Everywhere was dust, smell and dirt. The Momos were nice, but too late. From there we went to pick up our bags and headed to the place we agreed to meet Lou, David and Andrew. They weren’t there yet, but they arrived a second later. We all went to eat to the Om restaurant, where we met a British-Dutch couple. We also arranged a tuk- tuk for 8pm, which was the latest you could get. It was quite odd, because we had our train at 3:30am so it meant we had to wait for seven hours at the train station in Gaya. Lou, David and Andrew were leaving for the train one hour later, but they arranged a very overpriced taxi and slept here. It was too much for us now going back to the monastery and stay a couple of hours longer in here. We decided to take this tuk-tuk at eight. He took us to the train station and wanted more money, which we didn’t agree upon and he didn’t get. The train station was a big crowded disaster. Lots of homeless people sleeping outside and inside of it. We found out there was a resting room up the stairs, so we went to take a look. It was more quieter there. We also thought we might take dormitories they offered to rest, but we found out later it wasn’t a good plan. This way we spent seven hours waiting on black metal chairs, lots of people sleeping on the floor and tons of mosquitoes biting everyone. We had to use a coil to stop this blood- hungry monsters. I spent the whole time reading the Lonely Planet and Arne was reading a book and listening the MP3 player. Later on Arne was engulfed into a lengthy conversation with an Indian man. Among a few other delusions about the west the Indian man was convinced that Western men had 20 minute orgasms and Arne tried to convince him otherwise. But the time passed very quickly and all of the sudden we found ourselves getting into the train.

Jeans! cigarette is a must!
