They are ten week old puppies that were on the euthanasia list for Wed Feb 6,2013. Well, little Gayle looks just like my Topaz that passed away 7 years ago.......

And no one was stepping up to adopt them...I could not believe it.......10 week old puppies going to be put to sleep?

LEADER in 2013 and beyond :LEADER 2013 and beyond

Precis of presentation:

“So, LEADER in 2013.

In the Yorkshire Dales we have now committed all of our allocations of LEADER funding – £2.78 Million since June 2009. We have spent over 83% of our budget and are on target to complete by December 2013. And I have it on good authority that the Yorkshire & Humber are the best performing collective group in the UK at spending money.

(SLIDE) Now I know the first thing I’ve mentioned for our LEADER in 2013 is the money, how much we’ve spent and the fact we haven’t got any left to give out– it’s not about the money. LEADER has and will always been way more than just money.

The amount that we’ve spent can’t be the main outcome we shout about because there are more efficient ways of spending money than through the LEADER process. The real outcomes are to deliver action and change in our rural communities.

During 2013, the LAG will still be getting involved at every possible opportunity in the planning of the new programme of Rural Development, which includes LEADER. We’ve become an increasingly important rural voice – we have examples of good practice in rural development at our fingertips, as we have tested, financed and supported lots of them. Remember LEADER is an important part of the wider Rural Development Programme, the proton in the element and there is an EU requirement that at least 5% of the RD budget is allocated through the LEADER Approach. And the whole Programme affects our communities and our area also – our landscape, agriculture, forestry, business development are all supported through the wider Programme.

(SLIDE)Since June 2009 we have been investing for the future, intending that when the money is gone we will leave a legacy behind. LEADER is very good at Legacy stuff –the intangible stuff that is undervalued, never measured but is the real purpose of why we invest. Boosting capacity, pride, giving communities a chance to govern their own development, identify and implement changes that they want to happen.

This year more than any other is when the legacy is LEADER will be felt. All that social innovation we have invested in, happening all around us, to address local issues.

Without LEADER over the past 4 years it would be a very different area we live in, in terms of potential – we have raised and strengthened the potential of our area by several notches through having LEADER, we’ve broadened our horizons at a very local and often personal level. And over this last year it’s my job to make sure that as much potential remains, is added to as much as possible and that we as an area, as partnerships, as communities remain strong and effective, ready to take the opportunity of the next Rural Development Programme.

(SLIDE) LEADER Beyond 2013: I’m going to adapt an analogy I heard from one of my Irish colleagues – having leader funding for the first time is like watching the rising tide in a harbour, some boats have long anchor lines and rise to take advantage, some remain firmly anchored on the bottom and need more boost. There still remains in our area a need for major effort on supporting agriculture, and rural development. At government level the planning for the next round of European funding is well underway.

There have been regional roadshows by Defra consulting on a new model for delivering these European Funds. And these have been attended by NYCC. At a regional level, Local Enterprise Partnerships are seen by Government as being important building blocks, part of the model to deliver the European funding to boost regional development – but they won’t be able to cover rural effectively all on their own and as far as LEADER specifically is concerned, that will still be delivered locally, bottom up, by Local Partnerships, as it always has been. Our York, North Yorkshire & East Riding LEP is already working closely with Local Nature Partnerships and district authorities and is committed to ensuring that our area, its businesses and communities benefit from the new Rural Development Programme.

(SLIDE) This is where the higher level planning is at.

The Government are following up their road shows with a series of focus groups on Rural Development, again one of which will cover LEADER . There will then be full formal consultations on the new Rural Development Programme in the spring and summer.

Latest news on the grapevine has UK Government submitting the draft Rural Development Programme document to the European Commission for approval at the end of 2013. Think of it as a first stage project application and add some months onto it.

(SLIDE) So where does that leave us as we approach the transition from one funding programme to another? I think at this point last year I had a slide with a picture of a Pie in the Sky in it? We do know a little more than that now. The next RD programme – based upon the rumoured timetable of the organisations negotiating in Europe, will officially start in January 2014, though it may not be live until mid 2014. In England the plans are for start January 2015.

Ministers will be making available an allocation of transition funding for 2014, to continuing LEADER Local Action Groups, to help them maintain capacity. It will not be for projects, but to help existing LEADER partnerships maintain a level of momentum and adapt to the new Programme. Before they can make any allocations of transition funding, because this is European money and strongly regulated, we are now in a period where the European Commission are tabling amendments so there is a legal framework, setting out exactly what we can do in the transition period. Which takes me back to the beginning point, we are a small part of a huge Rural Development Programme that includes all the environmental stewardship/agri-agreements also, AND all will be affected in the transition period .

– latest rumours say that by the middle of this year we will be able to put in an expression of interest for this. And the LEP and NYCC (as accountable body for this programme), will work with DEFRA to ensure that our area benefits and any transition funding is spent as effectively as possible to set us solidly for the next programme. What our LEADER team and the Local Action Group will be doing this year is making sure that we learn lessons from the past and remain adaptable to the new Programme when it comes. We will be capturing some of the experience and trying to make sure we and others are not re-inventing the wheel come 2015.

My real point is a plea to stay involved, keep your eyes open for area consultations, feed into the surveys, if you as organisations don’t contribute, your voice won’t be heard. Only with your continuing enthusiasm for the LEADER approach can you hope to retain or attract more opportunities to test the LEADER methods again.

And continue to lobby the MPs to support the LEADER approach for the value that it brings our communities rather than the amount of money it can spend.

(SLIDE) The Leader approach most definitely has a future in our area after 2013. How much exactly will be dependent on

the outcome of higher level negotiations,

the Member State’s support of the transition process

and the move towards the new delivery model arrangements BUT

It will depend upon LAGs being flexible and adaptable to change. For my two pennyworth I hope that in the course of all the workshops all the legacy we create is built upon and the LAG and I will be shouting as much as we can to ensure that our needs for the next Programme as heard so we can get off to a good start in 2015

(SLIDE) Funded projects often go through defined stages over the course of their lifetime. – and Our LEADER Programme has arguably been a larger scale version of the funded projects that many of you have been running.

On a lighter note, there’s another version of stages in a project, which goes from the start with great celebrations , that turns to disillusionment and panic, followed by a search for victims, punishment of the innocent and ending with all praise and honours for those not involved. We gone through the celebration, panic and I’m hopeful we will go straight to the praise and honours stage with most of those involved still with us and supportive of the LEADER approach!!

The LAG have 3 more meetings scheduled for this year – our last Open Meeting is a celebration of the current Programme will be October 16th – make a note of this date in your diaries now – by then the next Programme will be less than 18 months away and I’m sure a little less nebulous than it is at present”

Hello everyone! Ready for more half moons? After I painted my nails for the half moon challenge last night, I realized that the colors are similar to the colors I used last time around for this same challenge lol. Super creative, huh?

If you don’t remember (or if you’re one of my new followers) I used purple and gold last time. So not completely the same but similar.

For today’s half moons I used two coats of Julep Gayle as my base color. It’s a dark purple creme. Very pretty in the right light. I used circle stickers this time to help with my half moon. Last time I free handed it but it was a pain. I painted two coats of Essie Beyond Cozy for the top half of the half moon. Once that dried, which was fairly quick since it’s such a dense glitterful (I may have made that word up) polish, I used a small dotter and just made little dots around my moon shape in the same color purple, Gayle. Top coat it and you’re done!

I was in Newtown on Wednesday night as the Connecticut Legislature’s Task Force heard testimony from parents, first responders, and other Newtown residents. It was riveting, heartbreaking, and at times infuriating. The shock and grief of parents who lost their children that day is still unimaginable. The courage it took for them to stand before this legislative body is profound. Unlike the Monday hearing in Hartford, most of the testimony was strongly and unequivocably in favor of stronger gun laws, including a ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines and assault rifles. The NRA and the CCDL will tell you that assault weapons are already banned in Connecticut. But that’s not really the whole story. When they banned assault weapons, the gun manufacturers just altered them to get around the ban by not allowing them to spray bullets. The NRA says that the rest of the features are just to make it look cool. The reality is that every feature of that gun has a purpose, to make it more accurate and efficient. If they wanted it to look cool it would come in different colors.

There were a lot of good ideas mentioned in the testimony. In my town there is a budget hearing next week to allocate over $300,000 toward new security measures for our schools, including the hiring of two full-time police officers to be stationed in the school buildings. There are about 9,000 people in my town. There are about 5,000 guns in my town, too. On Wednesday in Newtown a father stood before the task force and said, “The Right to Bear Arms is the best marketing slogan of all time.” Then he went on to say that increased security measures should be paid by the gun manufacturers. This is just about the best idea I have heard. Increased security is the price we pay for living in a society teeming with guns. Alternately, just as the NRA gets a dollar each time a gun is purchased, schools could get a dollar. Or tax the permits, so that the money is staying in the community where the guns are held.

One woman on Wednesday night said, in a very soft voice, “A mother bear has claws to protect her young. A mother tiger has teeth. Please don’t take away the one means of defense I have to protect my children.” During her testimony people near where I was sitting were visibly disgusted, and many of them left. This is an argument we have begun to hear over and over. For example, from “independent woman” Gayle Trotter at the Senate hearing, we heard this:

On Monday in Hartford I heard so many stories of home invasion and rape that I lost count. I’m not sure where those people were from, but according to them there are places in Connecticut where each night your home is more likely to be invaded than not. These stories are meant to do one thing – frighten us into buying more guns. Specifically, to frighten women into buying more guns. It is your DUTY as a mother to buy a gun. And because you are small, and fragile, and unable to shoot properly, you’d best get yourself a nice Bushmaster because you’re going to be shooting all over the place, and you’ll need a high-capacity magazine of at least thirty rounds so that hopefully one of them will hit your target. Don’t worry your pretty little head about where all those other bullets are going. Just make sure your kids are behind you.

I find this so outrageously offensive. Does the NRA really think women are so stupid and weak? I can just imagine the meeting where they came up with this crap. A bunch of men sitting around a table, saying, “Okay, we’re looking like the bad guys here. How can we make us the good guys? I know! Women. They’re so naive and impressionable – we’ll just tell them a whole bunch of stories about scary bad guys busting down the door, and how women were able to defend themselves. We will turn this from a debate about how to prevent a classroom full of children being slaughtered, to a quest for women’s rights – mother’s rights!” It makes me sick.

You know another mother who had guns in her house? Nancy Lanza. Her face was blown off. You know the rest.

The quality of batsmanship on display in the recently concluded Caribbean T20 tournament left a lot

The quality of batsmanship on display in the recently concluded Caribbean T20 tournament left a lot to be desired. Trinidad and Tobago, whose heavyweight batting line-up mercilessly bludgeoned a succession of hapless bowling ‘attacks’ into submission, was the notable exception. Other laudable individual batting performances were turned in by Jamaica’s Chris Gayle, Guyana’s Chris Barnwell and the Combined Campuses and Colleges’ Chadwick Walton. However, by and large, there was precious little excitement generated by the willow wielders.

Only one team – Combined Campuses and Colleges – really demonstrated the requisite appreciation for the importance of minimizing the number of dot balls consumed and rotating the strike. If not for their knack of toying with their woefully overmatched opponents, one suspects that Trinidad and Tobago could have been pacesetting in this regard as well. Most other batting units seemed intent on compiling a cache of dot balls for some apparently covert purpose. There was precious little acknowledgement of the fact that deliveries are too precious a commodity to wantonly waste in T20 cricket. This has to change. So, too, does the system of appraising the performance of batsmen.

In baseball, Sabermetrics, a comprehensive system for statistical analysis, is extensively used to evaluate player performance. Thanks to the evolution of this system, a ‘batter’ (baseball’s equivalent of a batsman/batswoman) no longer has their production – or lack thereof – assessed solely based on individually isolated measures such as home runs (akin to a six in cricket), batting average, runs batted in, etc. Now, however, through the use of integrative metrics such as On-base Plus Slugging (OPS), it is much easier to get a comprehensive read on the relative effectiveness and value of a particular hitter’s offensive contribution to his team.

Like in baseball, we, too, need to become much more analytical when evaluating batsmen and their performance. As such, I propose the use of the Batting Efficiency Score (BES) mechanism, which features a BES Calculator and an accompanying interpretative BES Classifier, as one of the tools for evaluating a batsman’s performance. The proposed BES formula for calculating T20 batting efficiency is detailed below:

BES = Runs scored + Leg byes – Penalty runs ∕ Deliveries faced

The batsman would be credited for each run he scores. He would also be ‘credited’ for each leg bye that results while he is on strike. Hence, if the batsman Napoleon Einstein scores fifty (50) runs and ‘generates’ a further four (4) leg byes during his sojourn at the crease, he would be credited for a gross run output of fifty-four (54) runs. However, a nominal penalty of one (1) run would be imposed for each dot ball, a legitimate delivery off which no runs is scored, that he consumes.

Assuming Einstein failed to score off twenty (20) deliveries he faced, he would be liable for a corresponding twenty (20) run penalty. This 20-run liability would be subtracted from the batsman’s 54-run gross output, leaving him with a net output of thirty-four (34) runs. This 34-run net output would then be divided by the number of balls faced by the batsman. Let’s say that Einstein faced forty (40) deliveries in total during his innings. The thirty-four (34) runs to his credit, divided by the forty (40) deliveries faced, produces a batting efficiency score (BES) of 0.85.

The BES Classifier, which is represented below, was developed to aid interpretation of the batting efficiency scores generated by the BES Calculator.

Its seven bands were demarcated after using the BES Calculator to evaluate a sample of individual innings randomly drawn from the collection compiled at the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 tournament. The ball-by-ball statistics required to conduct the aforementioned assessments was retrieved from ESPNcricinfo’s Statsguru database.

Of course, it would be foolhardy not to consider the particular context in which an innings is played. For example, Marlon Samuels’ epic knock of seventy-eight in the final of the aforementioned tournament returns a BES of only 1.00. However, when one puts ‘extenuating’ circumstances such as the nature of the pitch (seaming and turning), the enormity of the moment (the final of a major international tournament in the opponent’s backyard) and the high quality of the opposing bowling attack (Mendis, Malinga, Mathews, Kulasekara and Dananjaya) into the mix, it becomes apparent that BES cannot be looked at in a vacuum.

Jamaica’s playoff loss to Guyana left many local cricket fans in shock. While the team’s bowling effort was obviously tainted by complacency, its seemingly brilliant batting performance was also surprisingly inefficient. Chris Gayle’s punishing innings (122 not out) accounted for two-thirds of the runs scored by the team. His BES of 1.67, which was negatively impacted by the twenty-two dot balls he faced, contrasted starkly with the 0.18 BES cobbled together by his batting teammates. Overall, their ineptitude resulted in Jamaica’s cumulative BES only clocking in at 0.94 (Poor).

On the other hand, Guyana’s BES was a much healthier 1.16 (Average). Despite not being brilliant at minimizing the dot balls themselves, they still managed to cut down on Jamaica’s dot ball count of sixty-two. Forty-one dot balls was their eventual tally. In the final analysis, they comfortably trotted across the line though scoring twenty runs less in boundaries than the overly boundary-dependent Jamaicans.

Even with Chris Gayle in the line-up, Jamaica’s batting was never likely to be good enough to win the 2013 Caribbean T20 title. Too many of the batsmen selected were obviously ill-suited for this form of cricket. In T20 cricket, three types of batsmen are most likely to succeed: a) the consistent boundary hitter (Gayle); b) the skilful manipulator (Mahela Jayawardene); or c) the hybrid of both (Eoin Morgan). Deeper analysis is definitely needed to ensure that we start picking the right ‘horses’ for the appropriate ‘courses’.

” The hard-hitting Gayle scored 252 runs during the inaugural BBL season, almost a third of the Thunder’s tally of 814. Sydney Thunder squad: Chris Rogers (c), Chris Gayle, Usman Khawaja, Mark Cosgrove, Cameron Borgas, Ryan Carters, Sean Abbott, Azhar Mahmood, Luke Doran, Dirk Nannes, Gurinder Sandhu, Chris Tremain, Adam Zampa (one to be omitted, 12th man to be named) Melbourne Renegades squad: Aaron Finch (c), Daniel Harris, Marlon Samuels, Ben Rohrer, Peter Nevill, Tom Cooper, Will Sheridan, Aaron O’Brien, Nathan Rimmington, Michael Hill, Darren Pattinson, Muttiah Muralitharan, Brendan Drew (one to be omitted, 12th man to be named).

“While they were gallant with the ball, picking up five wickets, the Renegades always looked in control and cruised to victory, with 10 balls to spare, to bring up their second consecutive victory to start their Big Bash League campaign. ”It was a slow track and it put off the batters a bit, but we as batters we have to try and consolidate and try and get a decent total, regardless of what sort of surface we’re batting on.” A cautious Gayle played out five dot balls to start the innings before stamping his authority on the match with a six over mid-off.”

A few months ago I decided to sign up for a course I learned about from an artist friend of mine, Tracy Verdugo, called “Life Book 2013″. A very talented artist named Tamara Laporte is the creator of the year long course and it begins on January 1st, 2013. I am very excited to begin this new adventure and learn new ways to express myself with my art.

Each week there is a brand new tutorial via videos and PDFs for each lesson. No rules, no deadlines – each artist has room to explore at their own speed. A total of 21 art teachers will give lessons throughout 2013 – all different types of mixed media artists. My background is primarily with traditional art – realism and impressionism have been my go to styles, however, I’ve always longed to break free from that – to find a way to incorporate a new style in my art. I believe over the next year I will find that and oh so much more!

During Life Book 2013, we are encouraged to dig deep within and use the lessons presented as tools to discover who we really are, what is important to us, learn from the painful events that have happened to us so we can grow and begin anew. Over the past year I’ve gone through some massive changes in my life and this is definitely something I could use. I’ve been wanting to journal about my thoughts and feelings but it always felt a bit to daunting to even consider beginning. I never considered to journal with my art! So that is what I am intending to do – let my spirit come to life through my art.

I will write posts, share photographs of my artwork and create video vlogs of my journey with Life Book 2013.

There are over 800 artists from around the world who are participating in Life Book 2013, I am honored to be a part of such an incredible group of artists. I look forward to learning from all the artists involved.

In closing, I’d like to share my favorite prayer, its called The Great Spirit Prayer. I have it posted in my art studio and I read it every time I go into the room to create art. This prayer speaks to my spirit and it is the core theme of my journey with Life Book 2013.

Happy New Year world!

Cheers!

After highschool, Yoli attended an over-priced liberal arts university and essentially majored in tweeting while Peggo attended a farm cult university where she was beaten with brainwash until she bled maroon. In 2011 they were forced out of their four year long intoxicated stint and had to enter the “real world”. Now they spend their days pretending to work, shit talking and ordering bidness women specials (aka burgers, fries and diet cokes). But it wasn’t until late 2012 when a g-Chat conversation about having a sleepover with Oprah, her bff Gayle and Paula Dean led them to discover their true calling. From the ashes of a slumber party that will never happen, rose the phoenix that is …MOM GENES!

This is their story.
