In the December 2009 issue of Restaurant Magazine, Gavin Brooks, area manager of Konditor & Cook, describes joining a company that has just engaged a management consultancy – and its impact on his career bringing a specialist management consultancy has on his job and career. He explains how his need for career and skill development was met by Konditor & Cook but also on the benefits that David Gibson and his GBI team brought to Konditor & Cook’s interview process and training programmes.

His story shows what people look for in a company, stressing on thedesire and need to be trained and managed properly to ensure that everyone’s talents and abilities are recongnised and utilised.

In the November issue of Restaurant Magazine, Mark Ryan, Operations Director at Konditor & Cook, discusses the benefits of bringing in specialised Management Consultants to improve the organisation’s operations and develop its staff and management.

At first Mark Ryan was very sceptical about bringing in a management consultancy but after seeing the results, he has changed his mind. He has seen that the methods applied to world-class companies can easily be replicated in the food industry.

He stresses: “I have learned that the right kind of guidance and structure, from the right type of person, can add tangible value to your organisation.”

He also comments on the process that GBI adopted to implement the organisational changes to Konditor & Cook, explaining how the organisation’s management has to believe in the changes.

Strategic planning is also essential for an organisation and Mark Ryan observed how vital it is to get this right from tbe beginning. GBI was there to support and facilitate these changes for Konditor & Cook as well as provide the team with all the necessary tools in order to continue the organisation’s success.

The retailing industry is one that gets complaints very often as its primary aim is customer service

The retailing industry is one that gets complaints very often as its primary aim is customer service. So it is important to provide customers with excellent service that will make them come back. A research conducted by TARP revealed that on average a dissatisfied customer will tell about 10 of his/her friends, and in turn they will each tell another 5, which comes up to a total of 50 people.

Nowadays with the internet, blogging, twittering and social media networks, a dissatisfied customer can make an even bigger damage to your business.

Take for example Giles Coren. He posted a bitter remark on Twitter about how he was dealt with by a restaurant that had charged him twice for the same bill. This can potential really harm a restaurant’s reputation.

For every complaint a restaurant hears, there are bound to be a few others that feel the same way but have not expressed it. Most of the time complaints are reasonable (there are some that are crazy and are complaints for the sake of complaining).

Consistency in customer service and products is the name of the game. You have to provide every customer with the same level of service to garuantee repeat business. Repeat business generates 95% of a restaurant’s revenue.

GBI ensures that there is rigour and consistency in your business and puts into place methods and processes that will gurantee that all staff work to the company’s standards. Do get in touch with us to learn how we can help you embed that consistency throughout your organisation.

As we are nearing Xmas office parties, GBI recommends that this year you ‘raise the bar’.

In the Shortlist magazine we found this rather alternative suggestion for your office party: Dinner In The Sky!

Not for the faint hearted!!

This is obviously not for the faint hearted or those with vertigo. This event is hosted by Dinner In The Sky (www.dinnerinthesky.com) and can host up to 22 guests and comes with chefs, waiters and entertainers. Alternatively, you can host your wedding reception, business meetings, receptions…and the list goes on.

Some negatives that we envisage are the restriction of speaking to only the people on your left and right, not a great deal of freedom of movement (ie, the WC is out of the question!), and most probably numbness for sitting down too long.

But we think it could be a great alternative to the usual office parties and it will most definitely be hard to top. If you try it please tell us how it went and send us photos. (info@gibsoninfrastructures.com)

Chasing grants is a sport in itself – with many false hopes and bureaucratic twists. It always seems pretty impenetrable as an outsider.

However, I’d like to share an opportunity that I clarified today in case it offers you the chance to recoup 10% of your capital spend (or first 2 yrs salary bill) in moving to the region (from overseas or within UK) to create NEW JOBS.

Tesco recently started a new banking operation in the right postcode on Tyneside and will scoop 10% of the salary bill for the first 2 years as a grant. Clever folk at Tesco, eh!

I have established today that the Hoults Yard postcode is an ‘assisted area’ and, as such, in-coming new jobs are eligible for assistance.

1. These new jobs must be skilled (defn over NVQ Level2). Office jobs are eligible for support but not warehouse staff, for instance.

2. You can apply through the GBI fund, which may stand for Growing Business Investment

3. You don’t get the money upfront, you have to pay it out first – either as capital to set up the operation or as the salaries.

4. There are stipulations about the business not being part of a bigger entity, or the shareholders not being linked to big firms, nor being joint ventures with big firms. However, it seems these don’t apply in our postcode.

We have had instances where applicants have been accepted on the scheme for consolidating their various NorthEast operations, creating jobs and moving to the yard.

There is even a whiff of potential that smaller firms can get more than 10% of funding support. We can point you to the appropriate folk at OneNorthEast for a further consultation.

An additional incentive (if such were even needed!!!) to pick up the phone to us at the office here and book to see our latest high tech space.

Chipotle announced today the location of its FIRST London. The store will open sometime in April 2010. The US based buritos and tacos restaurant chain is also looking to expand to the rest of Europe in the near future.

Another US food company that is trying to enter the UK Food market. Lets hope that Chipotle does not end up like Taco Bell, Wendy’s, Dunkin Donuts, A&W Restaurants. It will need to look at how its operations and products comply with the UK standards and market demands. Offering the right product in the right way is crucial for all restaurants. BUT having well running good back of house operations customised to the local market is key for any restaurant and retail company expanding into UK and Europe.

Went on my rental tour today. God, it was exhausting.

I think I found a place that I like – now that I think about it, it was pretty much the only place that I liked among all the different ones that I was taken to – but they told me that it will be TWO MONTHS before an apartment becomes available (in any of my desired floorplans, that is)!

God, that means I could be stuck in the B-Dub for two months…it hasn’t even been a week and already I’m anxious to get out…

• • • • •

The detective on my rape case called me this morning, but I didn’t get his message until this afternoon (because I was on my rental tour). In the message, he said that all of the reports have come back from the GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) and that he wanted to fill me in. I called him back at around 4:30pm and when he didn’t answer, I left him a message. I hope he calls me back this afternoon. Otherwise, it’d be weird receiving that call while I’m at work on Monday…

I started on the real practice kit today. First, you have to make the stiffeners. Easy as pie, except the stock I got in my kit was cut short by about 1/2″ in each case. I got two shorter sections, the kit shows it comes as one long piece. Maybe George gave me some extra that was laying around. No biggie, but that’s why in the pictures below the stiffeners are different lengths. Then I edge prepped the stiffeners, ribs, spar, and skins. I also practiced using the soldering iron some more, with pretty decent results. Here’s a shot of the stiffeners and skins ready to match-drill.

Skins and stiffeners ready for match-drilling.

And the stiffeners match-drilled to the skins…

Match-drilled and cleco'ed.

After this, I assembled the skeleton, matchrilled both skins to the ribs, spar, and trailing edge wedge, then disassembled everything. It got late, so I stopped after getting all the holes deburred. Here’s a shot of the skeleton clamped together, ready for drilling.

Skeleton Clamped

Next step is to figure out a priming process and test it out before dimpling and riveting.

I am a lucky guy. I live about an hour away from George and Becki Orndorff of GeoBeck, Inc. See their website at fly-gbi.com. Last night, after a wonderful day of flying a Cessna 310H to Gilliam McConnell and having lunch at the Pik-N-Pig, I drove down to see George and Becki and purchase a practice kit. After graciously forgiving me for bothering them on a Sunday evening, George showed me their RV-7A (N289GB). It was immaculate. I asked George about a few things, the answers to most of which were expected. Example: Why shouldn’t I build? (“You should!”) Do you love it? (“Absolutely!”) Everyone I ask has nothing but wonderful things to say about their RV. Sounds like I need to go ahead start!

Two of his answers were more interesting. I asked him about tip-up versus slider, noting that everyone seems to like what they have. His simple response: “I’ve built both, and the slider is better. I won’t build another tip-up.” I was sold, but I pushed to find out why. Basically, he explained that the slider was more sturdy, cooler (both hero-pilot style and temperature style) and easier to build. Easier to build? That’s contrary to what I’ve heard, but George is obviously trustworthy in the RV expertise area, so I’ll take is word for it.

The other answer was to “What modifications should I do to the RV-7?”

He told me to put the RV-8 rudder on the RV-7 (instead of the RV-7/9, larger “uglier” rudder). I haven’t seen pictures side-by-side (to determine if I agree with the ugly part), but George said the larger rudder on the 7/9 is for spin recovery. I’ll need to think about this some more. I am not too concerned about spin recovery (he said it only improved the recovery from 1.5 turns to 1 turn), so I think the choice will come down to aesthetics, and the fact that the trailing edge of the 8 rudder is bent, while the 7/9 rudder is double-flush riveted.

Anyway, I got home with the kit, and had to join the girlfriend for dinner, so all I did was unpack the kit, and lay it out nicely so I can take pictures tomorrow before I get started.

Most importantly, the kit is a Van’s kit (some other builders were wondering what the difference was), but also comes with GBI’s sheet metal tools DVD. $55, which, with some subtraction skills, puts the DVD at $20. I watched the DVD last night, it runs about 60 minutes, and was really helpful with introducing me to some of the tools and techniques I am going to become intimately familiar with over the course of the project. He also walks through the actual construction of the practice kit. It’s worth the $20. I also bought the pre-punched empennage kit videos. Those should come in handy soon enough.

Prev | Next

President Obama’s New Missile Defense Plan Does Not Address U.S. Homeland Population Protectio

President Obama’s New Missile Defense Plan Does Not Address U.S. Homeland Population Protection

WASHINGTON, Sept. 23 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Riki Ellison, Chairman and President of the Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance (MDAA) www.missiledefenseadvocacyalliance.org has developed a White Paper that analyzes the recent missile defense decision by President Barack Obama and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. The White Paper states that the protection of our homeland population is a risk we are facing with the new missile defense plan. Ellison has shared the White Paper with members of Congress, and it is detailed below:

Background

On September 17, 2009, President Barack Obama and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates unveiled a shift in missile defense policy abandoning the “Third Site” in Europe, outlining a “new missile defense architecture” for the protection of Europe primarily focusing on the development, evolution and deployment of the Standard Missile-3 (SM-3), which will be both sea- and land-based. These will protect our forward deployed troops, friends and allies in Europe from the Iranian short- and medium-range ballistic missile threat. The “new missile defense architecture” does not address or replace the protection from Iranian long-range ballistic missiles that the “Third Site” in Europe would have provided.

Findings

This “new missile defense architecture” is a step forward and will better protect our forward deployed troops, friends and allies. It is a positive move towards a future global missile defense system that is adaptable, integrated, interoperable and will offer cost-sharing opportunities with our allies.

The “new missile defense architecture” does not address or replace the protection of the U.S. Homeland from Iranian long-range ballistic missiles that the “Third Site” in Europe addressed until 2020 with a nonexistent, untested and unproven version of the SM-3.

The “Third site” in Europe was positioned for long-range ballistic protection for the U.S. Homeland and two early warning missile defense radars in Thule, Greenland and Fylingdales, England as the current and future deployed Ground-Based Interceptors (GBI) in Alaska and California are dependent on these two fixed radars sites to protect the U.S. Homeland from long-range missiles from Iran.

Due to the geographic distances from Alaska to the Southeastern and Eastern regions of the U.S. Homeland, a long-range ballistic missile attack from Iran would not yield the same protection and multiple-shot doctrine (Look-Shoot-Look) as the rest of the country now has with the current missile defense system, thus increasing the risk of success and lowering the confidence of the systems capability to defend the Eastern and Southeastern regions of our country.

The proliferation of short- and medium-range missiles from Iran is the main driver for this “new missile defense architecture.” The placement of short- and medium-range Iranian missiles on sea-based platforms against the U.S. Homeland needs to be equally addressed as Iran has demonstrated this capability.

Iran’s successful launch of the Safir space launch vehicle that placed a satellite in orbit on February 2, 2009 and the Iranian 1,200 mile solid fueled two stage missile launched on May 20, 2009 coupled with their continued proliferation of short- and medium-range ballistic missile tests demonstrates their technical proficiency in developing an ICBM. It is of note that the former U.S.S.R. took six months from its first successful satellite launch in 1958 to develop an ICBM that could reach the U.S. Homeland.

As of yet, there has not been a credible solution or realistic alternative offered by the President or the Department of Defense to replace the protection of the U.S. Homeland and the radars in Greenland and England that the sites in Poland and the Czech Republic would have done, nor has there been a “hedge” solution introduced against sea-based short- and medium-range missiles threats against the U.S. Homeland in the announced “new missile defense architecture.”

Analysis

The White House announced that it is reshaping American missile defense policy with a stronger emphasis toward the short- and medium-range missile threat from Iran. This change entails abandoning plans to build ten Ground-Based Interceptors in Poland and a long-range radar system in the Czech Republic. Instead, President Obama proposed implementing a multi-phased plan to create a “new missile defense architecture.” The first phase consists of deploying SM-3 Block 1A missiles, launched from Aegis ships, to Europe while pursing options for land-based deployment of the same system, “Aegis Ashore.” Under the final phase of the plan, the White House anticipates the deployment of SM-3 Block 2B to Europe by 2020 to have the capability to intercept long-range ballistic missiles — eleven years from now.

The previous plan to build GBIs in Europe aimed to protect our European allies, our troops deployed, and most importantly, our homeland. Because SM-3s are designed to intercept short- and medium-range missiles, the change from GBIs to SM-3s will provide insufficient coverage against long-range ballistic missile threats for our country and the two fixed radars in Greenland and England for the next eleven years. The new proposal covers the second and third priorities of our missile defense doctrine as outlined by Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Cartwright, protecting our allies and our troops, but it does not fulfill the first and most important priority, outlined in the plan for missile defense: “the defense of our homeland.”

Under the plan, the SM-3 Block 2B missiles, the plan’s solution to long-range missile threats, are not slated to deploy until 2020 if the technology is proven. Eleven years without missile protection for the East Coast is too long to put “at risk” the American public. While MDAA supports the President’s vision for a “new missile defense architecture,” we must call attention to the inadequate protection that the East Coast and Southeast will receive under this plan and the lack of a missile defense “hedge” for sea-based short- and medium-range missile threats to our Homeland. The United States invested tens of billions of dollars over the last seven years to produce defense against long-range, medium-range and short-range missile threats. From this labor and the tens of billions of tax dollars spent, the U.S. has created a technically capable and deployed answer to ballistic missile threats, but still needs a policy solution from the Obama administration to provide equal protection for the U.S. Homeland.

Mark Rossolo started the online presentation on Green Globes(GG) from the Green Building Initiative(

Mark Rossolo started the online presentation on Green Globes(GG) from the Green Building Initiative(GBI).

The History of GBI and GG:
Mark outlined the history of GBI and how it is recognized by leading third party institutions and related parties to the construction industry.

Green Globes uses the Energy Star program as a reference point. It is Accepted by numerous insurance agencies. And it is Recognized by government at federal level (presidental initiative). Currently 19 states formally recognize GG through legislation/ regulation. It originated from BREEAM UK and through a few iterations came to be Green Globes-US/CAN.

Green Globes Strength Highlights:
Emphasizes Energy
Benchmark against Energy Star
Incorporates LCA (life-cycle-analysis)
Minimizes Point Chasing
Requires third party site visits for certification
Cost effective and scalable
(accounts for competing requirements from governing bodies that make some requirements N/A)

There are Two programs for assessment:
GG for New Construction
GG for Continual Improvement

Green Globes is currently transitioning to being ANSI certified (for both programs) and should be complete by the end of the year. The main purpose is to make the program better, easier to use, and easier to be recognized by governing bodies.

The Environmental Assesment Areas:
1) Management
2) Site
3) Energy-(Most heavily weighted category)
4) Water
5) Resources
6) Emissions and Storage of Hazardous Materials
7) Indoor Environment

Similarities and differences exist between LEED and GG. There is
85% similarity overlap but, GG places more emphasis on energy and LSA (using the internal LSA calculator).

Used in Commercial Retail, University, Healthcare, Government GSA, office, etc. Not used for Single Family Homes at this time.

The ANSI approved Program will be referred to as (GBI 01-200XP). It is made up of alliances with Industry, Users, And Third-party committee members.

Requirements for rating a project:
A major difference from Leed is that there are no standard prerequisite requirements. There are minimum point amounts required in each category, but it is up to the design team to choose how to achieve the points. This is to stress the flexibility of the program and adaptability.

A Minimum of 35% points need to be achieved in each category for compliance (ANSI version).

Upon registration of a project online there will be a unique project report generated. This evolves as users input more detailed information at each phase of design. A report is generated by GG at the end of each phase and this allows tweaking along the way to ensure project is hitting target score desired. This online tool is designed to Define, Measure, Analyze, Implement and Improve.

A Visual report for each section exists per project upon login.
Questions increase in complexity/ Detail required as project moves along. The Report will have hyperlinked info to help educate the design team about products and principles that will help achieve the rating desired.

The Certification Process:
The architect starts the process for 3rd party assesor to review application and on-site report by completing the online project document/ report and requesting a review.

The rating system is as such: 1 through 4 globes designation (only 2 four globe projects in existance in US to date). Division of globes is designed to match LEED rating system.

A major feature of the system is the LSA tool. It provides Cradle to Grave implications in the summary for the assessment area. It is also available for free from ATHENA EcoCalculator. The purpose of the tool is to shift from prescriptive to performance based buildings.

Certification options from the GBI:
There is a GG Professional (for an architect/ designer to get a certified rating in use of product/ process).
There is also a 3rd party Assessor (for establised, educated, industry related individuals)

Currently accepting applications for both programs
Online training 2 month process starts October 15th

www.thgbi.org
mark@thegbi.org

There is a free 30 day trial of the program.

Typical costs for a project are:
$500 registration per building. This provides the access to the assessment tools and report.
The 3rd party Assessment (Certification) is ususally $6000 (handled through GG).

Evidence has come to light suggesting that Sir Robin Get, the last High Priest to serve before the Grongles banned religion, may be alive and well.

Percival and Randy Get, his brothers, who both work for the Bank of Grongolia’s investment arm, were unavailable for comment this morning.

Regarded as the black sheep, Sir Robin turned his back on the Get family tradition of usury and chose, instead, a life of religion.

With a first class honours degree from the University of Hamgee he soon came to the notice of the elders and was anointed the youngest ever High Priest 25 years ago today. He was added to the Government Blacklist seven years ago and disappeared from public life shortly afterwards.

However, even, now, sightings of Sir Robin continue to be reported and he is the second most “seen” dead person after the late, lamented, rock and roll star Pelvis Resley.

If he has survived, Sir Robin will be seventy next month and would be the longest surviving member of the Government Blacklist. His closest rival is the Pan of Hamgee (aged 21) who has survived an astonishing 5 years after accidentally bumping into Lord Vernon and knocking him over on his local high street.

Our search for the survivors of blacklisting continues…

Tahun 2009:
♥ Tahun berbuah
♥ Tahun pelipat gandaan
♥ Tahun panen raya
♥ Tahun kesembuhan dan mujizat yang kreatif

Yohanes 11:25-26
