<p style="text-align:justify;">Hoy les traigo una recomendación bastante interesante. Muchos de los programas que a veces utilizamos estan enfocados para poder lograr la educación de niños( primordialmente los de kinder y primaria) entre 2 y 10 años y es muy interesante para que los niños vallan conociendo el uso de la computadora y realizen algunas operaciones matemáticas, juego de ajedrez, etc.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Pero muchas veces  la mayoria de estos tipos de sofware si no es que la mayoria de ellos son caros.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Pero Gcompris no es nada de eso es una aplicación de código abierto la cual  podemos instalar en Ubuntu, Debian y hasta en Windows.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;"><em><span style="color:#ff0000;">Nota: A diferencia de Ubuntu y Debian en Windows no cuenta con todas las caractertisticas, para acceder a todas se tiene que pagar para obtenerlas, pero igual y con las que trae basta.</span></em></p>

<p>The project that kicked off a long time back (I think 2001-2?) was heralded as a large and complex operation that would encompass many governments, organisations and operatives. Since the many newspaper, blog and newsfeed stories that have chronicled the progress of the project it seems as though the OLPC has taken a slightly different track in it&#8217;s approach and direction. This sidestep is part and parcel due to Walter Bender leading a team with the OS rather than the hardware.</p>
<p>Sugar, the name for the OS that OLPC uses is a flavour of the Fedora Linux family and is also available through Debian, Ubuntu and, as I&#8217;m about to chat about, the live USB version. Although, I&#8217;m cheating a little, as I&#8217;ve actually got it through VirtualBox as as a separate installer. The idea is that I would like to use it in class as a live USB for the smaller children in another computing environment that windows for various reasons that i&#8217;ll come to ina moment. The live USB version, I would assume, is very similar in use as the main with some elements missing &#8211; but for this post I&#8217;m sure this won&#8217;t matter as the crux of the issue is classroom use.</p>
<p>So far, this OS (<a title="Sugar Wiki" href="http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Welcome_to_the_Sugar_Labs_wiki" target="_blank">the Strawberry Sugar on a stick</a> but not on a stick!) is working very well for me. i really like the interface, the simplicity and the ready robustness of the feel I played around with it and tried to think like a 5 or 6 year old would when they are presented with something new. The whole wow factor followed by the frantic clicking and then followed by the stop and look. I did this without precautiuon and ened up opening the turtle application. Now, my students (age from 4 to 11) are pretty familiar with windows and they see a changing desktop appearance week in week out but not the operation. The circular dial would, I feel, entice them to click on the picture. I mean, after all I set up icon shortcuts for them to &#8220;click-click&#8221; on daily and this seems kid centric to me. The circle of apps surrounds them too which is what I like also. So far, so good.</p>
<p>We have been using the Windows version of Gcompris for a while now as it has games and quizzes that are colourful and easy to follow and differentiate for  the more computer savvy 5 year old. Also, Gcompris is open source (resticted for Windows users) but the full set up available for your school should you run EdUbuntu or similar (or if your site manager allows you to run VirtualBox) coupled with Sebran and you have quite a setup for the bebinner ICT class for children (or OAPs getting used to a computer and keyboard).</p>
<p>What is really good about Sugar though is the potential of the site and the community that runs it. The model of the Mozilla extensions that has made web browsing sans IE has been used here too. The Activities menu is growing all the time and there are some reasonable addons here too. As any self respecting ICT teacher will know music is a brilliant factor in the attention grabbing eyes-on-the-screen activity where and hour zips by without a word said (headphones permitting). <a title="Sugar activities" href="http://www.sugarlabs.org/index.php?template=page&#38;page=about_activities">Tamtam Jam activities</a> provide this with an easy download.</p>
<p>I am sure that I will hit stumbling blocks along the way and the fact I have to try and persuade my Principal to give me money for 25 2Gb USB drives so that I can operate this for my classroom is one of them. What I would then like to do is test and post up the pitfalls and the successes &#8211; especially the neighbourhood tool and see the reaction.</p>

<p>This is a good educational tool, with interesting games for children who are beginning to learn using keyboards and mouse. It occupies a good deal of space about 166 MB due to use of lot of graphics, but is worth a download.</p>

<p>A edição desta semana do jornal Expresso, dá grande destaque a <a href="http://aeiou.expresso.pt/o_festival_de_asneiras_do_magalhaes=f501580" target="_blank">uma notícia em que se alerta</a> para a existência de erros grosseiros e graves de português em algum do software instalado no computador <em>Magalhães</em>. Estes erros foram descobertos pelo deputado José Paulo Carvalho no software educacional <em>open source</em> (distribuído gratuitamente) <a href="http://www.gcompris.net/" target="_blank">GCompris</a>, que se encontra instalado na partição do <em>Magalhães</em> em que se utiliza o sistema operativo <a href="http://www.magalhaes.caixamagica.pt/" target="_blank">Caixa Mágica</a>. É referido ainda na capa do Expresso, que a tradução para português do <em>software</em> educacional foi efectuada por um emigrante português a residir em França e que este teria como habilitações literárias a quarta-classe. As informações referentes  às habilitações literárias de quem efectuou a tradução e à sua origem, parecem-me, desde que vi a capa pela primeira vez, estar destacados de forma exagerada na capa do jornal. Alguns dos erros enumerados, são erros que se podem cometer facilmente (eu cometo bastantes vezes o erro tipo encontraste/encontras-te quando escrevo em<em> chats</em> e <em>emails</em>) e não é necessário ser-se emigrante, nem &#8220;iletrado&#8221; para os produzir. Afinal o que deveria ser notícia eram os erros de português e não quem os cometeu.</p>
<p>Os erros identificados nesse  <em>software </em>educacional já seriam graves se fossem encontrados num qualquer produto educacional disponível no mercado, mas tornam-se ainda mais graves quando encontrados num produto educacional cuja utilização, ainda que não obrigatória, é intensamente promovida pelo Ministério da Educação. O Ministério terá de ser muito mais exigente e critirioso na avaliação dos conteúdo que disponibiliza no Magalhães, isto se quiser afirmar o <em>Magalhães</em> como produto educacional credível, útil e de referência.</p>
<p><strong>O <em>Ministério da Educação</em> já disponibilizou um tutorial de como remover o referido software do <em>Magalhães</em>. Pode ser encontrado <a href="http://www.min-edu.pt/np3/3311.html" target="_blank">neste link</a>.</strong></p>
<p>Na minha opinião, o tipo de erros que foram encontrados são comparáveis aos erros que  se encontram nos manuais escolares todos os anos, da primeira-classe ao 12º ano, se bem que o Magalhães ninguém é obrigado a comprar. No início de todos os anos lectivos, políticos/governos quer do PS, PCP,CDS-PP, PSD, BE prometem implementar medidas de qualidade e certificação dos livros que podem ser escolhidos pelas escolas, contudo, que eu saiba, a real implementação dessas medidas, continua na gaveta e os pais dos alunos continuam a ser obrigados a comprar manuais com erros quer de português, quer técnicos. A consequência desses erros traduz-se no reduzido tempo de vida de alguns livros, como livros recomendados por uma escola.</p>
<p>Pode ser que este caso do software do computador <em>Magalhães</em> relance  a discussão sobre a qualidade dos materiais educacionais que são disponibilizados no mercado e a necessidade ou não de entidades que certifiquem esses materiais.</p>
<p><strong>NOTA 1</strong>: Parece que o Expresso se equivocou nas habilitações literárias do emigrante português que fez a tradução do software. Afinal trata-se de um profissional das <em>TI</em>, com um curso superior nessa área e outro na área de Filosofia, e que é conhecido entre a comunidade do desenvolvimento de <em>software open-source</em> por ter produzido diversos trabalhos tecnicamente evoluídos e de qualidade. <p>Vitali Perchonok was asked to check the computer is his city of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiryat_Gat">Kiryat Gat</a>, he found a lot of old PCs (P1 and P2) with windows 98 and DOS games that don&#8217;t work. He decided to find a way to use the computers with open source software.</p>
<p>He found that he can run <a href="http://gcompris.net/-en-">Gcompris</a>, an educational software suite comprising of numerous activities for children aged 2 to 10, on the old computers. Now he just needs to update the Hebrew translation (<a href="http://linmagazine.co.il/node/view/11666">last updated</a> at 2005). Along side the translation he fixed bugs, recorded new sounds and replaced some of the graphics (all with the help of a few friends).</p>
<p>To wrap it all, he decided to create a liveCD for the program, and this was the beginning of KG-Live. The changes were sent upstream and should be included in the next release.</p>
<p>Today, the project waits for approval from the Israeli Ministry of Education, before distributing the software officially to the kindergartens.</p>

<p>GCompris é uma suite de aplicações educacionais que compreende numerosas atividades para crianças de idade entre 2 e 10 anos. Atenção: Não foi usado o microsoft office no processo de edição, não gostaria de insentivar o uso do mesmo, use formatos públicos e abertos.</p>
<p>Suplementar a nossa apresentação acompanhe um video demo sobre o software em questão, aproveitando as caracteristicas de software livre do gcompris modifiquei as musicas de fundo para cantigas de roda brasileiras como <cite>fui morar numa casinha</cite> e eu <cite>fui no tororó</cite> como exercício de modificação inicial, provando todo o potencial da suite educacional gcompris.</p>

<p style="margin-bottom:0;">Last week Peter most graciously wrote the first blog entry for the new batch of volunteers marking a new era for OTS. With this being my first post (me being Steve), I&#8217;d like to say a quick hello to the OTS blog readers, and extend a big thank to both Adil and Jordan for all their hard work prior to our arrival. Their invaluable contributions to the organization provided Peter and I the direction and context we needed to hit the ground running.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">So, where do I begin? As Peter mentioned earlier, our first week was spent in Dar getting the crash course in Swahili and Tanzanian culture. After a short stay in TZ&#8217;s urban centre, we set sail for Tabora armed with only our swahili phrase books and high hopes. The train ride was an experience to say the least, and a solid choice for the financially conscious traveller. Looking back, I would have to say one of my fondest memories was a point at which Peter drew my attention to a rather stunning sunset on the first evening (I should mention the picture doesn&#8217;t quite do it justice). At the time, I couldn&#8217;t help but wonder what new and mysterious adventures awaited us beyond the horizon.</p>

<p style="margin-bottom:0;">We are now starting our third week in Tabora, and the wheels are most definitely in motion for OTS. Last week Peter, Holly, and myself teamed up with Claudio, the project manager of Alliance One&#8217;s oxen project, and headed north to the oxen training facility. I believe Adil had mentioned this in an earlier post, but just to recap, the oxen project is an excellent program which acquires and trains oxen to be sold to local farmers to provide more efficient means of farming.<strong> </strong>Upon our arrival, Claudio wasted no time in explaining how the training program works. It was rather interesting to hear him emphasize the importance of &#8216;friendship&#8217; between the farmer and the oxen. He discussed how, regardless of the various stages of physical training the oxen must go through, the farmer must work to establish a strong relationship of trust. A concept that was later put to the test in an amusing demonstration, as a weary oxen proceeded to make haste as its trainer was attempting to feed it.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">Upon watching a demonstration of the farmers and oxen training in the fields, Peter and I were delighted when an invitation to try it out was extended our way (see amusing photos below). All in all, I can definitely appreciate the hard work and effort that goes into the program.</p>

<p style="margin-bottom:0;">On to other ventures&#8230;We are currently quite busy continuing the research on communication networks amongst the local farming communities. Mapping these networks accurately has proven to be no simple task, though the added value of our efforts will no doubt yield many benefits critical to the development phase of the project.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">We also have some interesting meetings lined up in the near future, such as a meet with Tabora&#8217;s District Commisioner, which will most definitely contribute to our research and findings. So there will indeed be much to report on in the coming weeks.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">One of the other projects we are currently working on is developing a computer literacy training program for local children. As Peter had mentioned in the last blog, we are currently using an open source educational suite known as GCompris to drive the program. GCompris is an incredibly robust computer literacy training package which contains a wide variety of valuable educational applications. The package can be  downloaded free of charge from their website for both Windows and Linux environments, and although there are obvious cost benefits to using free software, the major benefits emerge from the &#8216;open&#8217; aspect of GCompris (free as in freedom). Language barriers are a case and point, as applications within GCompris are presented entirely in English. Due to the open nature of the software, a teacher could easily modify the language files to integrate a swahili vocabulary. Such flexibility is often not available with most closed-source, proprietary alternatives.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">What makes GCompris particularly unique is an administration utility which allows teachers/instructors to track student progress. Teachers can use this tool to access valuable statistics, such as what applications have been used, when it was used, and how well the children performed. Such information is critical in evaluating student progress effectively and driving the future goals of the curriculum.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">This week we will be heading to a school known as St. Francis to meet with the local teachers and see how they integrate ICT&#8217;s into their daily activities. I&#8217;m quite excited for this little excursion, as I&#8217;m sure it will provide much insight into the practical use of networked computers in the region. More on that later.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;">On a sad note, some of our fellow Millenium volunteers have recently departed. Nick and Max helped Peter and I get comfortable in our surroundings during the first few days in Tabora, and contributed to a rather lively atmosphere around the VOL house. They will be missed, and we wish them the best in their studies back home. On a positive note, Emily, who is also part of the Millenium project, has returned from her travels and has been a blast to have around. Overall, the house is lively, the work is steady, and all is well in Tabora.</p>

<p>Aku punya dua orang anak, sejodo! Yang gede cowok 3 tahun dan yang bontot (calon bontot <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif' alt=':-P' class='wp-smiley' />  ) 2 tahun. Lagi lucu-lucunya. Saking seringya mereka melihat bapaknya noprek Linux, mereka juga ingin ikut ambil bagian buat berpartisipasi dan selalu minta main game! Untungnya Linux menyediakan game edukasi yang komplit dan tak kalah kualitasnya dengan game serupa yang komersil. Bermodalkan GCompris dan Childsplay serta TuxPaint mereka bisa tertawa-tawa gembira sambil belajar menggerakkan mouse dan memijik keyboard meski belum mengerti apa instruksi dari setiap permaian.</p>
<p>Mereka mengenal berbagai suara binatang, suara kendaraan dan bunyi-bunyi lainnya yang mengharuskan si pemain menunjukkan gambarnya. Luar biasa 2 balita ini 65 persen bisa mengklik mouse pada jawaban yang tepat meski saya tak pernah mau memberi tahu mereka <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' />  . GCompris memang dirancang buat anak-anak usia mulai 2 tahun sampai dengan 14 tahun. Si sulung lebih suka main TuxPaint dan Super Tux Cart (dengan gue sebagai driver dan dia sebagai penggembira yang selalu berteriak dan bersorak jika si Tux berhasil mengebom Evil Tux, Yeti dan icon Si Gimp). Ternyata Linux bisa menjalin kehangatan antara Ortu dan anak-anak ya <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif' alt=':-P' class='wp-smiley' />  . GCompris di Fedora yang kupasang berbicara dan mengumumkan sesuatu hal dalam bahasa Indonesia. Jadi Si Sulung dan Si Bontot selalu mengikuti komentar &#8220;Berhasil!&#8221; jika kebetulan mereka memilih jawaban yang benar, dan berteriak &#8220;Yaaa Salah!&#8221; jika GCompris menilai jawaban mereka salah! Meski salah atau benar tawa selalu keluar dari mereka.</p>
<p>Mengenalkan pendidikan keagamaan khususnya Islam menjadi mudah dan terbantu dengan paket-paket aplikasi Islami semacam Zekr dan Minbar. Kita dan anak-anak bisa belajar dan membetulkan bacaan tahsin yang benar lewat murottal ayat per ayat dan memahami teori tadjwid yang banyak bikin anak-anak sekolahan ngeri <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif' alt=':-P' class='wp-smiley' />  . Dan mereka akan mendengar Adzan ketika sedang asyik bermain.</p>
<p>Pembiasaan anak-anak untuk menikmati kebebasan dan kebenaran mulai kulakukan bagi mereka semenjak dini. Biar nanti jika mereka sudah besar punya image yang kuat bahwa OS di PC itu Linux dan Linux itu mudah serta sangat menyenangkan, dan membajak dengan memakai OS atau aplikasi bajakan itu jahat dan tidak benar serta memalukan. Aku sadar benar bahwa kakak-kakak (anak-anak kakakku) kedua bocah cilik itu masih belum benar dalam menggunakan Teknologi IT pada PC mereka. Sudah saatnya mengenalkan bahwa Linux itu adalah Sistem Operasi, Linux itu adalah Komputer dan bukan OS alternatif lagi!!!</p>

Un processeur à 766 Mhz, 20 G° de disque dur et 256 M° de mémoire vive : autant dire qu&#8217;un Windows XP là-dessus réclame beaucoup de patience, d&#8217;autant plus que la version installée n&#8217;est pas franchement officielle (sans licence ni CD) et bugge beaucoup, Pas grand chose à rafraîchir donc, si on reste en l&#8217;état.<br />
Avant d&#8217;envisager de récupérer 2 ou 3 trucs genre graveur de CD et barrette de mémoire vive, on choisit une distribution <a title="Linux_Wikipedia" href="http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux" target="_blank">Linux</a> pas trop gourmande et au cas où on se lance dans une installation, Sans le moindre état d&#8217;âme on écrase le Windows bancal qu&#8217;on va remplacer par une <a title="Kaella" href="http://kaella.linux-azur.org/" target="_blank">Kaella</a> (qui est une <a title="Knoppix" href="http://www.knoppix-fr.org/" target="_blank">Knoppix</a> francisée) à laquelle on réserve une partition, une autre étant dédiée aux données et documents. Cette distro a été choisie pour ses logiciels ludo-éducatifs issus de <a title="Gcompris" href="http://gcompris.net/" target="_blank">Gcompris</a>. Si elle ne passe pas (ce qui serait surprenant) on installera une <a title="Toutou_Edux" href="http://moulinier.net/download.php" target="_blank">Toutou Edux</a> adaptée aux ordinosaures.<br />
Finalement, c&#8217;est sans surprise et sans souci majeur que la Kaella a pris ses fonctions, et le pc tourne désormais à une vitesse sans commune mesure avec les piètres performances constatés auparavant avec l&#8217;OS qu&#8217;on a déjà bien trop cité dans ce billet.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;text-align:justify;">Cas n°2 : Une petite activité sans prétention qui se créée et qui acquiert à peu de frais un pc  reconditionné avec son Windows XP et un CD de restauration. Une configuration tout a fait adaptée à l&#8217;usage prévu pour la machine.<br />
Reste à trouver des logiciels pour commencer à bosser, prioritairement des logiciels libres : pour ce faire direction le site <a title="Framasoft" href="http://www.framasoft.net/" target="_blank">FramaSoft</a> où l&#8217;on glane entre autres <a title="Firefox" href="http://kesjensai.wordpress.com/tag/firefox/" target="_self">Firefox</a>, Thunderbird, <a title="OpenOffice" href="http://kesjensai.wordpress.com/tag/openoffice/" target="_self">OpenOffice</a>, Vlc et Clamwin.  C&#8217;est tout naturellement que je propose également d&#8217;installer en dual-boot une distribution Linux ainsi que la création d&#8217;une partition de partage des documents et données.<br />
Après quelques hésitations, le choix se porte sur une <a title="OpenSUSE" href="http://fr.opensuse.org/" target="_blank">OpenSUSE</a> réputée stable et sobre.<br />
On est malgré tout étonné d&#8217;être surpris car tout c&#8217;est passé sans le moindre souci : pas même un geste d&#8217;énervement ou un juron, c&#8217;est dire si ça aura été facile.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">
<p style="margin-bottom:0;text-align:justify;">Cas n°3 : Un pc portable très récent avec un Windows, ayant chopé des trucs malveillants difficiles à éradiquer. Le plus simple est donc de tout refaire proprement, d&#8217;autant plus que le propriétaire avait eu la bonne idée de dédier une partition à ses documents, mais aussi de créer un DVD de backup de son précieux compagnon. Une fois la restauration effectuée, on passe à l&#8217;étape du dual-boot avec <a title="Ubuntu" href="http://www.ubuntu-fr.org/" target="_blank">Ubuntu</a> car notre novice en a entendu tellement de bien.<br />
Sur un portable ça peut vite devenir galère d&#8217;installer Linux, surtout qu&#8217;il risque bien d&#8217;être <a title="PC_Tatoué" href="http://www.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-2809902-pour-les-questions-des-pc-tatoues-et-oem" target="_blank">tatoué</a>. On suit donc scrupuleusement la procédure et ça se passe bien, même si comme prévu on rencontre un problème avec les drivers de la carte vidéo et il faut donc installer la version propriétaire et bidouiller un peu Xorg.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom:0;text-align:justify;">Au final, trois cas différents avec des besoins différents qui n&#8217;auraient trouvé à priori chez Windows qu&#8217;une seule et unique réponse.<br />
Chacun aura pu faire son choix et l&#8217;adapter à ses besoins, grâce à 3 distributions Linux.<br />
Les quelques soucis rencontrés (et ceux qui se produiront à l&#8217;avenir) sont imputables aux fabricants de matériel.</p>

Il progetto pilota è in via di sperimentazione presso la scuola materna di Cossignano con ben tre <b>postazioni PC</b>.</p>

<p>Usare software libero è sempre un bene, specialmente in ambienti come <strong>scuola o </strong><strong>uffici di pubblica amministrazione</strong>. Da qualche tempo la Scuola Italiana ha inserito l&#8217;insegnamento di Informatica a partire dalla scuola primaria. Questo è in generale un bene se l&#8217;<strong>attività complementare</strong> riesce a migliorare il metodo di apprendimento del bambino. Diventa un male, come in molte altre situazioni, quando se ne abusa. I bambini non dovrebbero passare il loro tempo davanti un PC, ma lasciare libero sfogo della loro fantasia all&#8217;aria aperta.  Quel poco (e giusto) tempo trascorso davanti al PC occorre sfruttarlo al meglio e gli <strong>insegnanti</strong> sono i responsabili dell&#8217;applicazione delle nuove tecnologie a scuola. Partendo dal presupposto che l&#8217;uso del PC nella scuola primaria è affrontato come un <strong>gioco</strong>, il bambino vorrà necessariamente lavorare sulla stessa piattaforma a casa. Usare software proprietario e conciliare questa esigenza dei bambini fa cadere molto spesso i genitori nella trappola della <strong>pirateria</strong>. Si finisce per copiare software illegalmente o infrangere qualche termine di licenza. Se questo può rappresentare una <strong>mancanza morale</strong> accettabile per il genitore, per il bambino si rivela un comportamento <strong>altamente diseducativo</strong>. Con il software libero siamo tranquilli e abbiamo le libertà di:</p>

<p>Recentemente sto studiando il pacchetto <strong><a href="http://gcompris.net/-it-" target="_blank">GCompris</a></strong>  e voglio farlo diventare bagaglio culturale per il mio lavoro. Riporto la descrizione pubblicata sul sito originale:</p>

<p>In totale GCompris propone più di 50 attività ed è in continua evoluzione. GCompris è software libero e quindi potete adattarlo ai vostri bisogni o migliorarlo o ancora, perché no, distribuirlo in beneficienza a tutti i bambini del mondo.</p></blockquote>
