Dzien dobry i witam!

I had no idea before I moved here what it would be like living in this city. Sure, I’d visited many times before and I thought I had an idea, but in reality I didn’t have a clue! Often as tourists in a foreign country we only see the veneer of a place without getting to know what it’s really like. I’d like to share some of the “real” Gdansk on these pages and what better way to start than with an introduction to the city.

Gdansk is located on the northern coast of Poland. Geographically speaking it’s on the same latitude (I hold my hand up – I had to check if it was longitude or latitude that goes across the globe!) as the northern tip of Germany, the mountains of the Lake District in the UK, large parts of Canada (sorry, but Canada is just so huge!), the Gulf of Alaska and the Bering Sea, the vastness of Russia, and Vilnius in Estonia. Not surprisingly, with these other places as latitudinal neighbours, the climate of Poland is temperate. Still with me? Temperate, from my days in geography classes means cold, wet, and dark in winter (don’t I know it!) and warm and sunny in summer. Typical summer temperatures are in the mid 20s C and it can get down to -15C or so in the middle of winter. Put more simply, in the summer it’s fantastic and in the winter it’s depressing!

Gdansk is actually part of a group of three cities (Sopot, Gdynia and Gdansk) which have merged together over time to become the Tricity area (Trójmiasto in Polish) with a population of about 800,000 people of which Gdansk has about 500,000. So Gdansk is by no means a small city.

Gdansk itself has a lot going for it, not least its history. The opening salvos of World War II were fired not even a mile off the coast of Gdansk and the fall of Communism was heralded in the now ghostlike shipyards of the Old Port by the iconic Lech Wałęsa (pronounced Leck Vowensa phonetically…oh what fun it will be to go over the unfathomable polish language in another post!). If that’s not enough for you then Gdansk has some fantastic architecture (if you ignore the ugly, grey communist apartment blocks that are scattered throughout the Tricity area like giant lego bricks).

If architecture and history don’t float your boat then head along to Sopot – the middle city of the string of the Trójmiasto. In Poland, Sopot is probably most well known as a coastal “spa” town. I put “spa” in inverted comas because as far as I can tell there are no spas in Sopot, and you may as well replace the word “spa” with “party”. Sopot is definitely known as THE party town in the summer. There are more beach nightclubs and bars than you can shake a stick at and the young and beautiful make Sopot their own in the summer months – basking on the beach under the glorious sun and endless blue skies by day and partying under the stars by night. Sopot also boasts the excellent Monte Cassino street which is full of, you guessed it, bars and restaurants with the odd shop here and there. Finally Sopot is the proud owner of the longest wooden pier in Europe which measures in at a deceptively long 515 metres. The pier is a perfect place for a stroll on a summer’s evening, if you don’t mind paying the 10 or so zloty charged to gain entrance. If your timing is good you can catch the Orange Film festival which shows nightly at the end of August on the pier. For the romantics among us, you get to watch a classic film on the pier with your kohanie (sweetheart) in the open air in a deck chair – don’t forget to bring a blanket and/or a discreetly stashed bottle of wine! It’s a perfect way to end a summer evening.

And finally to Gdynia, the last jewel in the Trójmiasto crown. I have to say that I don’t really know alot about Gdynia because I’ve only really driven through it on the way to other places. What I do know is that Gdynia is the proud owner of the hideous carbuncle that is the Sea Tower, and also a big, old, blue ship in the harbour which I can’t remember the name of now (if you know anything about this ship please add a comment). If you know what Gdynia has to offer the visitor I’d love to know and I’ll be happy to update the article.

So there you have it – an introduction to Gdansk, Sopot and Gdynia, the beautiful cities on the north coast of Poland. If you’ve got this far, well done and as well as learning about this lovely part of the world you’ve the added bonus of learning a few polish words along the way (oh just wait until I do a post on learning polish!)

Hello and welcome to my blog.

Who am I?
I’m a 36-year-old Englishman living in Gdansk, Poland since July 2009. I’m an IT Infrastructure Management consultant, project manager, and trainer.

Why Poland?
The main reasons I moved to Poland is because my fiancée is Polish and lives here in Gdansk and we just had our first baby at the end of September. She wanted to be in a familiar place before, during and after the birth. The second reason is that Gdansk is a really nice place to be. There’s lots going on here in the city and the surrounding countryside and seaside are both really beautiful as well.  I’d been working in Belgium for the last 6 years and although it’s a lovely country I missed a more varied landscape and I missed the sea. The downside to me moving here is that so far I’m really fighting to find work (something which I will definitely be putting some more posts about in the coming weeks and months). I’ve never had to fight to find work before and it’s been something of a shock to the system to be doing it now. I think the timing of me being here couldn’t be worse given the state of the global economy, but on a positive note it’s proving to be a good test of character for me – words like resilience, persistence, creativity, determination and flexibility spring to mind.

Why a blog?
One of my goals is to increase my visibility out there and I want to keep myself active and doing new things while I’m looking for work opportunities. I’ve also been using LinkedIn a lot recently to increase my contacts and I’ve seen articles written there that say having a blog is a good way to increase one’s visibility and sell yourself online. Here’s one such article.

I also I have a feeling that it’s a good idea to have a blog even if no-one else reads it. It’s a nice online journal of one’s thoughts and ideas and experiences and being online gives one the incentive to update it more than say writing the same thing in Word or in emails to friends. Also it’s good to have all those web links available somewhere other than just in one’s favourites in IE or Firefox. If I post links here I think that they’ll have more meaning and be in context.

Why WordPress?
It looks like a fantastic piece of software for getting the job done. Plus by registering at the WordPress website I don’t have to even register a domain name.

Why DazzleZone?
Because all the names I wanted were already taken! Seriously, that’s why. So I went to this great site which picks funky names for you. It also gave me  the names digibean (I like that one), quimbo (sounds strangely rude) and tamba, but DazzleZone has something which is catchy and reads and sounds nice. So here we are at DazzleZone’s blog!

What to write about?
Well I’ve got enough things to choose from:

My career for the last 10 years has been in IT Infrastructure Management so there’s lots to write about there. I’ve just moved to Gdansk in Poland which has a whole heap of challenges associated with it, not least learning a new language. I’m the proud father of a 7 week old baby girl, I’m trying my hardest to find work in a foreign country in what is arguably the most challenging of economic times. My hobbies are kite flying and paragliding. Basically I think I’ll find a few things to write about.

I’m also going to be having a look through this nice tutorial for ideas on how and where to start.

Step 1 – Which theme to use?
I don’t know if this is just me, but I think most men when they have a new toy don’t want to read the instructions, we just want to start playing with it immediately. I’m no different and I so first of all I wanted to change the look and feel of my blog. Now one of the nice things about the WordPress site is that you can choose from a whole load of fantastic themes. I opted for this one (it’s called Chaotic Soul I think) because it has a clean look and I like the stretched header image at the top. I think it’ll be nice to put different pictures up there which are relevant. Right now I’m trying to find one of Gdansk because that’s where I am living.

Step 2 – Tagging
I was once told that there are no stupid questions, just stupid answers, so I’m happy that the internet explained to me how to correctly tag my blog. Sounds obvious right? Well it wasn’t to me but now I know because I read this interesting article and this one on tagging your blog and now I’m all tagged and ready to go! (Well actually I’m not all tagged and ready to go, but I’ve made a start!)

In Summary…
Well that’s a good start I reckon.

Na nic się zdaje intencjonalne przychodzenie w pojedynkę, aby z nikim nie wymieniać poglądów w najmniej odpowiednim momencie. Próżno też zajmować ostatnią ławkę, z której nie widać autora, a linia łącząca słuchacza z drzwiami jest najkrótsza.

Przysiadła się do mnie, grzecznie uprzednio pytając, mimo że odpowiedź była dla niej jasna. Poprosiła o kartkę. Do tego momentu nie wiedziałam, że w jej przerysowanych eye-linerem oczach być może po raz pierwszy, bohater wieczoru został postrzeżony w swojej obecnej postaci.

Rozczarowałam ją nieznajomością twórczości ucznia, mimo że to pisarz większego już formatu. Rozłożyła przede mną przedmiot dzisiejszego spotkania, z namaszczeniem cyzelując kształtne pismo w postaci dedykacji. Często ponoć te same litery na kartkach świątecznych odziewane są w złoto. Na kartkach, które poza tym pokpiwają sobie z jej wierzącej postawy, a przedstawiają zakonnice z dziećmi albo zakonnice oglądające Wenus z Milo. Mąż i znajomi zresztą pokpiwają trochę z jej zachwytu tym młodym mężczyzną, nazywają go żigolo.

“Pobudzają go rzeczy odrażające.” – i tu chudym palcem wskazuje mi fotografię chorego mężczyzny o fizjonomii zbliżonej do wymysłów stylistów zatrudnianych w horrorach. Ekfraza do tego zdjęcia była później czytana.

Po drodze gdzieś wypadło kilka informacji o hermetyczności jego wierszy, którą ona osobiście gani (powiedziała to jednak takim tonem, jakby chciała ją w y r ó ż n i ć), o Gośce Dobosz (wyjaśniłam jej, że to persona z Nieszuflady, na co napomknęła o jego pracowitości i że ona nic już nie wie z tym Internetem…), o Piotrusiu, z którym bohater jest już pięć lat, o genialnej pamięci (kiedy zwrócił uwagę, kto był na poprzednim spotkaniu), o talencie malarskim (sama zakupiła od niego niesamowity obraz), o młodzieńczych sukcesach. Bania z rewelacjami rozbita na samym początku sączyła się pomiędzy zawartością książki. Uśmiechałam się, potakiwałam, starałam udzielać odpowiedzi na gesty poszukujące wyrazów podzielania zarówno jej obserwacji, jak i humoru wywołanego tekstem.

Autora zdołałam zobaczyć w całej krasie, kiedy podszedł do swojej licealnej wychowawczyni. Wyglądał jak wyjęty z XIX wieku: surducik z cebulą w kieszeni. Nawet jego goście wyglądali jak poloniści, artyści, studenci filologii. Ciepła emerytowana nauczycielka, która zechciała otoczyć mnie płaszczem… właściwie nie mogę określić czego, nosiła bardzo elegancki zapach. Tylko ja byłam tam jak w fotomontażu: bez wyrazu, z unoszącą się nade mną nutą kompletnie nieudanych placków marchewkowo-cukiniowych.

We just finished a remarkable Ministry Training School in Gdansk, Poland.

I had the privilege of teaching with Randy Boyd of Prepare International and a new friend, Brad Davidson.  We taught seven sessions on Disicipleship and Spiritual Fathering.  It was a tremendous joy to teach on this subject alongside one of the most influential men in my life.  The message we communicated was more than words and principles, our very lives were a demonstration of the beauty and process of dicipleship over many years and stages of development.

A few observations from our weekend with these wonderful brothers and sisters:

• The future of the Christian church in Poland is in good hands.  As I shared with 20 somethings through the weekend and teenagers on Sunday morning, I was blessed by the passion and caliber of these young believers.
• Christians in Poland know how to worship! 
• People in Poland are hungry for authentic Christianity.  A brief conversation on our flight into Gdansk connected a young woman with the local church.
• Disciples are being made and will continue to be made in Poland!

Lord Jesus, thank you for the privilege of speaking life into believers in Poland.  May your fire and love fill their hearts and direct their steps.  I thank you for generational blessings flowing through the grace of discipleship among our Polish friends.  Strengthen the Body of Christ in Poland, Lord.  Encourage.  Refresh.  Bless.  In Jesus Name.  Amen.

Jednak profesjonalny sprzęt znacznie bardziej ułatwia wykonanie bardzo ładnych i estetycznych zdjęć. Profesjonalny sprzęt pozwoli fotografowi używać większych czułości ISO, fotografować w kościele bez lampy nadając specyficzny charakter jego pracą.
Bezwzględnie musicie również wiedzieć czy dany fotograf posiada drugi, zapasowy aparat, który w razie awarii pierwszego jest zawsze gotowy do użycia.

Zastępstwo.
