On one of my computers (Dell XPS M1530) I got an Error Message after installing and trying to run gDesklets: Failed to execute child process “gdesklets” (No such file or directory). Or in Swedish “Misslyckades med att köra barnprocessen “wxvlc” (Filen eller katalogen finns inte”).

There is a very easy fix for this problem. This happens due to some problem related to what Phyton version is installed. To fix the problem:

1. System > Administration > Synaptic Manager

2. Make a Quick Search, enter “python2.5″ (without quotation marks)

3. Install

4. Done, now start gDesklets

I found this fix here (thank you fleaaccela): http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1158189

To get gDesklets to autostart at bootup, read this post:

gDesklets is a neet program for pimping the desktop. Using gDesklets you can add a “mac like” launch bar and desklet widgets like clocks and notepads. In my opinion gDesklet feels a bit out of date and can be a bit bugy, but if you want a launch bar or desktop widgets it does its job. One of the problems I have had is that it sometimes doesnt autostart when booting the computer, even though I have added a startprogram in System > Settings > Session with the command “gdesklets”.

The secret to get gDesklet to start att boot up is to use the command “gdesklets start” and it will work like a charm

Vanilla ubuntu is pretty boring and very brown, so the first thing I always do after installing a new Ubuntu version is to “pimp” my desktop to look like this:

My pimped dekstop

I do this en several steps:

1. I dont like the default placing of the navigation bars, so I switch places on the bars by rightklicking on the bar and settings, there you can set the placing of the bar. In the setting I also adjust the coloring and transparency of the bars by klicking on the tab background and choosing a colour.

2. I then add some navigation bar programs (down to the right) by rightcliking and then “Add to panel”.

3. Nest step is to install some nice fresh themes. I used to customize most of the “theme” settings myself but its taking too much time every so now I use the desktop themes that I find here:

http://francois.vogelweith.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=18&Itemid=23

All his themes can be installed using this guide. It takes some manouvers but its easy when following the short guide.

4. My next step is to install gDesklets to add some Mac feeling with a nice launch bar. I do this by adding the program: program > add/remove > search for “gdesklets”, click add = done! Now go to program > Accessories > gdesklets

To add the launch bar choose toolbar/launchers and click on StarterBar. You can now place the starterbar on your desktop. To add programs just drag and drop from the menues.

5. 3d effects with Compiz. I start off adding four desktops (up to the right) by right clicking > settings and then choosing 4 columns. My next step is to add “Advanced settings for desktop effects” in programs > add/remove. Next I have to enable the effects here: system > preferences > Apperance and the tab visual effects > Extras. Now the effects can be configured systems > preferences > CompizConfig settings manager. Enjoy!

Compiz 3d effects

Well on the new Jaunty Release of Ubuntu, I could never get gDesklets to run, This bothered me so much, I went googling for an alternative, and i found an AWESOME alternative that is better. It’s called Screenlets. It allows you to run Desktop widgets that are coded in Python:

$sudo apt-get install conky

Coloque o seguinte texto:

#!/bin/bash

sleep 60 && conky;

Após salvar o script dê as permissões de execução chmod + x .conky_start.sh;

For something that you look at every day of your working life, your computer desktop doesn’t get as much attention as it deserves. That’s too bad, considering that the desktop can do a lot more than display wallpaper and hold shortcut icons. From widgets to workflows, from calendars to computer stats and beyond, you can do a whole lot on your desktop without manually starting up a single program. Hit the jump for our top 10 list of applications and tweaks that make your desktop a truly useful place to land.

10. Embed Text Files on Your Desktop with Samurize (Windows)

If you keep important information like tasks and project notes in plain text files, you can pin that information to your desktop automatically. Free Windows application Samurize can embed text files data right on your desktop behind any program windows, giving you at-a-glance access without having to launch a text editor. Here’s a detailed tutorial on how to incorporate text files onto your desktop with Samurize. (Samurize includes support for system statistic widgets, too.) Linux users can get something similar with programs like gDesklets or Conky, or by embedding a terminal in their desktop with Compiz Fusion.

9. Monitor Your Mac with GeekTool (Mac OS X)

More than just the Mac equivalent of Samurize, GeekTool is a desktop overlay that helps you keep tabs on nearly anything that can be piped through your system terminal—text files, CPU and memory usage stats, a calendar display, a list of Google Calendar events for the day, or even dynamic graph images. And it’s a great motivator to keep your desktop space tidy, to boot. Here’s how to monitor your Mac and more with GeekTool.

8. Check Multiple Web Pages at Once with Dashboard Web Clips (Mac OS X Leopard)

Sports scores, web site stats, player widgets for Last.fm or Pandora—our commenters can think of many uses for OS X Leopard’s Web Clips Dashboard feature. Use Safari to clip sections of web pages you want to add to Dashboard, and hit the F12 key to invoke a screen full of web page sections all in one look.

7. Embed Web Pages with Active Desktop (Windows XP)

Ahead of its time and awkwardly implemented at first, Active Desktop was born buggy in the Windows 95 era and kept out of Vista, but XP users can profit from a few intrepid web hackers’ use of the ability to embed web pages right into your Windows desktop. For example, you can automatically keep Google Calendar on your desktop, keep web search boxes in your desktop corner, or use reader favorite Netvibes as a desktop background.

6. Reserve Desktop Areas with DesktopCoral (Windows)

The good software Samaritans at DonationCoder have turned out a number of great problem-solving applications, and DesktopCoral is no exception. Need to keep your browser or other apps from taking over a piece of screen real estate you want to keep clear for IM windows, email monitors or GTD apps? Fire up the app, define the area you don’t want anything to expand over, and your maximize button becomes a little less overpowering. It’s a great complement to nearly all of the Windows-based tricks cited in this list.

5. Google Desktop Gadgets and Yahoo! Widgets (Windows/Mac)

Gadgets and widgets are pretty much like the web itself—a great way to get things done, or get lost for hours in games, dancing babies, and Digg links. But you can also bring on the productivity with Outlook to-do lists and task timers in the Windows sidebar with Google Gadgets (or onto the Mac Dashboard). If you’re more of a Yahoo devotee, we recommend the Informer Widget, an all-in-one wunderkind that integrates RSS monitoring, email notifications, system stats, Wi-Fi strength, and a good number of other info nuggets.

4. Get the Best Windows Vista Gadgets (Vista)

Like the aforementioned gadget engines cooked up by its competitors, Microsoft’s own Vista Sidebar gadgets don’t get a lot of respect, but there are a few standout tools for the taking. Save yourself a good number of Ctrl+C/Vs with a Clipboard History, get iPhone-like visual voicemail via CallWave, and, actually, turn a lot of Google or Yahoo gadgets into Sidebar items with free converter Amnesty Generator. Plus, it’s built into the operating system, so upgrades automatic and no third party software’s involved.

3. Add Your Outlook Calendar to the Desktop (Windows)

There’s a reason desktop calendars—the mammoth, coffee-stain-collecting kind—have survived into this thoroughly digital age; regardless of all the work and minutiae piled up, you can get a feel for your day and beyond by looking down. Download Windows utility Outlook on the Desktop (original post) and you’ll get a similar always-there planner for your computer screen, with an adjustably-transparent calendar laid over your desktop space.

2. Stretch Your Wallpaper Across Dual Monitors

Dual monitors boost your productivity by simple virtue of the fact that they offer more screen real estate to get things done, but let’s get real—who doesn’t want to show off their side-by-side screen setups? Grab a copy of DisplayFusion (original post), and easily split your epic/panoramic/super-cute wallpaper across two monitors. Here’s more on how to make the most of your dual monitors, and our some of our favorite sources of free desktop wallpaper.

1. Arrange Windows with Hotkeys (Windows)

Sure, you could arc your mouse pointer around every time you want to resize or shuffle an application window around—or you could keep your hands on the keys and shuffle them around instantly, “Minority Report”-style. WinSplit Revolution (original post) assigns window movements to user-defined shortcuts, so you can swing a full-window Outlook to, say, your second monitor, shove Pidgin into the lower-right corner, and keep Firefox open in the upper-left.
What desktop improvements, plug-ins, or function-changing hacks help you get things done and enjoy your computing experience? Found a better version of the apps mentioned here? Share thoughts and links in the comments.

Docks became popular when Mac began using them in their operating system. But these days docks are available on all platforms.

So which ones should you avoid and which ones should you use?

Lets start with the ones you should avoid.

1. Simdock

It’s in the official Ubuntu 8.04 repository, but don’t ask me why. The screen shot says it all.

Advise: avoid at all costs!

2. Gdesklets dock

I didn’t even install this one in hardy. I’m speaking from experience about this dock.

Gdesklets was extremly unstable for me in gutsy and made my pc crash on numerous occasions.

When it was not busy crashing, it was having a serious impact on resources.

If you want a screen shot, try google.

Advise: try it if you want, but be warned, you’ll hate it.

3. Kiba Dock

The dock itself isn’t to bad. It’s not the best, but still pretty good. The reason I think people should avoid this application is because you need to compile it from source.

Advise: if you feel like compling it from source, by all means do so

Now, which ones should you try?

1. AWN

Short for Avant Window Navigator, AWN is one of the best docks availabe this day. It offers great applets, you can download themes from the internet, it has a flat and 3d look (look here for the curved look). You can set all kind of effects for the icons.

I didn’t crash on me when I used it and I didn’t experience any kind of impact on my system because of awn.

It’s in the Ubuntu repository, so install it as you would any other application.

Advise: if you are looking for a dock, you should test this one.

2. Cairo Dock

My favorite one.

The reason? It just looks the best.

The program comes with a dozen or so standard “skins” you can choose the first time you start it.

It has all the options you would expect from a dock, and some more.

It is not in the repositories (I don’t get how simdock gets in, and this doesn’t), but installation is easy.

Go to this page, and download the latest “dock” and “plugin” .deb files. Double click them to install. After installation, you can open Cairo Dock using “applications -> system tools”.

Advise: the best one available for ubuntu, so make sure to give it a try.

If you want any of the docks to start on start up, add them in “system -> preferences -> session”.

In the “command” box, you should enter the name of the application, search for the application in synaptic (system -> administration) after you installed it, and use that exact name.

Note: KXDocker is/will be discontinued so it isn’t in the list.

If you know any other docks, feel free to mention them in the comments. I will be happy to add them into the post.

Adviced by users:

1. Wbar

It’s more of an application launcher, because I doesn’t let you “dock” programs, but it has a usefull number of apps it can launch.

The best part of this little “dock” is that it doesn’t need a composite manager (like compiz fusion, or the one build into Ubuntu 8.04) to run. So it’s perfect to add some eye-candy if you are running low-end hardware.

Download the .deb file here.

Advice: If you are running low-end hardware, this might be for you.

Trendy Teddy mentioned there are GUI’s (graphical interfaces) available to change some settings.

wbarconf
http://www.gnomefiles.com/app.php/wbarconf

wbar util
http://www.gnomefiles.com/app.php/wbar_util

Update

There is a new dock on the scene called “Docky”.

It’s actually more than just another dock, it’s a front end for gnome-do.

The dock can be used to search for all sort of things, in the screenshot I just entered “U” and it suggested to play all U2 songs.

When I pressed enter, Rhytmbox popped up and played all my U2 songs.

This is the best dock for any operating system by far.

sudo apt-get install xcompmgr

sudo apt-get install avant-window-navigator

As demais configurações ficam a gosto do usuário.

Para instalar digite no terminal – sudo apt-get install gdesklets

http://www.xfce.org/

Ir a la consola y escribir

sudo aptitude install xfce

como root:apt-get reinstall xfce

como usuario: sudo apt-get reinstall xfce

sudo aptitude install gdesklets

sudo apt-get install gdesklets
sudo apt-get install gdesklets-data

Applications -> Accessories -> gDesklets
