We found absolutely the best thing ever! Well, maybe not ever, but definitely a must have for us. There is one word for this gear — sweet! If I had to describe it in two words they would be f’ing sweet!

How can you not love this when it:

records 2.5 hours on a single charge

shoots HD video hands free (for when you are barreling toward your death)

water proof to 60 meters (180 feet)

shoots in light

is sturdy enough to avoid bumps and bruises when you’re kicking a**

Oh yeah we have to have it! Can’t live one more day without it.

It is available from the Official Go Pro Store for $299.

Obviously, Ab has to wear this little number (thanks babe) since this is clearly not compatible with my sexy lol. I can’t wait to get it and show you guys what we see.

Hear is some sample video from the cam. You can’t tell us you don’t think this isn’t hot (well you could but we won’t listen).

That’s how many items I’ve uploaded to my Flickr Pro account, as of November 25, 2009. (

That’s how many items I’ve uploaded to my Flickr Pro account, as of November 25, 2009. (I’m fully caught up now.)

Yikes!

Granted, there are a lot of crappy photos, redundant photos, unusable video, silly shots, etc. that I’ll never make public, but the dross can still trigger memories. They also leave a trail of development and trial and error that’s interesting on its own.

They’re mainly there in case something catastrophic happens to my external USB hard disk while traveling or after I send it back home for safekeeping (when it gets full). I’ve also been linking to them for recent posts to this blog.

I chose Flickr Pro to archive my photos, because they’re fairly inexpensive, have a public API for writing tools and utilities, and they store the original, full-size image files unaltered. Since I am only using JPEG files (no time to process RAW), that’s important, since I want to avoid re-compression artifacts.

I’m still exploring what Flickr can do and what I can do with Flickr, beyond the obvious.

Flipping back through the photostream, I notice that Flickr failed to process some videos, so I have to spot those and re-upload them and hope it works the second time.

I also need to set the timestamp on the videos to be in line with when they were taken (not their upload date, which is the default for videos, since they don’t have EXIF data like JPEG images can).

I’m still going through and applying tags, which currently are mainly by location and done in large batches, since I uploaded everything chronologically.

I also need to add titles and descriptions, where needed/applicable.

Originally, when I reviewed photos on my previous Windows box, I added comments using Windows Explorer’s File Properties dialog, which embeds the comments in the image file’s EXIF data. When uploaded to Flickr, the EXIF data’s comments automatically became the image’s title, but I still need to clean them up.

Now that I’m reviewing and adding comments under Mac OS X, Finder’s Info box adds my comments as Spotlight metadata on the given file. The Python script I’ve been using (with some modifications) didn’t pull out the metadata when uploading the images to Flickr, so most of the comments entered on the Mac need to be re-applied to the corresponding Flickr item. Fortunately, I think I can create a Flickr utility using the Flickr API to do this automatically – I’ll probably continue to use Python for this.

I also need to review the photos to see which are interesting enough to make public. Some will also be linked into blog posts here.

It should be a fun way of revisiting my travels so far. I’m looking forward to it! (As long as I have a reasonable internet connection!)

The other day I shot an event. So that meant dark light, high walls, hard to bounce.

“Crisp” means “bright pixels”, so you will sacrifice some crispness when it is dark.

Still – I never point my flash at subjects when it is the main light. So instead, I bounce. I use the wall or ceiling – but when that is too far (and at 800 ISO “too far” is quite far!), I use a Honl bounce card, or a Fong lightsphere, or I just bounce off my hand:

Um yeah, the theme was “70’s”.

I was using a 1Ds MkIII and a 16-35mm f/2.8L lens.

I did not want too much noise so I stayed at 800 ISO.

I used 1/30th second, f/2.8

A wide angle lens means that even at f/2.8, I get nice depth of field.

And the slow exposure means I get some nice background light.

Flash pointed behind me to the right, and bouncing (I saw a wall not too far).

Everyone else got dark backgrounds; I get this. A fast lens (f/2.8) is quite essential.

The JFK50, 2009–for me and for 999 others–is now done. It was a challenge to be sure.

The JFK50, 2009–for me and for 999 others–is now done. It was a challenge to be sure. For starters, we ran over a mountain, South Mountain, to be more exact. I found this to be both the best and the worst part of the 50. Really, it is all about the mountain. Now I understand. We ran along the ridge for a while. Some of the views were amazing. When the stony trail smoothed out a little, you had a chance to look up–and then down to see the valleys on either side. Even in the grey of November, it is a bit breathtaking. This is Appalachian trail, some of which I’d hiked before, and experiencing at such a pace was, well, kind of thrilling. More than kind of.

We took our time on the up-hills, walking or at a half-trot. Part of the up-hill where we mounted the trail is paved, and this felt highly unnatural, even after running up a couple of miles of road. But then we reached the summit, ran along the rocky ridge, through a series of ups and downs, and finally down some treacherous switchbacks to the river.

Once again, I found myself at several points racing down a trail, trashing my quads for the sheer joy of it and not caring one bit how I would pay later. Only now I had to worry about having something left for the flat-ish 34 miles to come. There is something so primal about running trails. I really couldn’t help myself. At one point I just gave up, threw caution to the wind and just let the horse go. I reminded myself that more than anything, even more than finishing that day, my main goal was to enjoy this experience, and there may be nothing on this planet I like more than nimbly flying–or crashing–down a stony mountain trail. A couple of face plants and a twisted ankle later reminded me to take it easy a bit. But I was by no means out of commission. Training mostly on the flat dirt of the tow path, city streets and the hamster mill, I soon became mindful again that running trails is so much more physically taxing than road racing, or at least taxing in a different way. Mentally taxing, you must focus on every step–and quickly. One false step could be devastating, and much like climbing, it will remind you later of muscles you didn’t know you had.

Coming down the mountain switchbacks brought on a serious bout of runner’s euphoria, and I began quietly singing to myself in Gaelic. I was careful to do it quietly. Hope I didn’t annoy anyone. From here, we could hear the crowd at the first pit stop below cheering, and this drove us on, some of us a bit delirious from the mountain run.

I was proudly running with the Reston Runners a well-established club that among its vast and varied membership includes a large contingency of seasoned ultra runners who run the JFK every year. They kindly adopted me for the experience, despite my Maryland residency, and proved to be the warmest, most conscientious and supportive group a person could be honored to have stumbled upon.

At the pit stop, I was greeted with the familiar face of my friend Leslie, a Reston member with whom I had run several times over the summer in training. She has run the JFK 4 times. She was there cheering me on, waving and smiling. Others in the club had my drop bag ready for me, the first of a series of personally-packed bags the club’s crew delivered to various points on the run. Much like a race car pit crew, they soon had me finely tuned and oiled with water, gels and anything else I needed for the next round. They were invaluable to say the least. This early on, I needed nothing more than some water and a gel, but the psychological support got me much further.

After the mountain, we only had 34 miles of nice flat and semi-flat coasting to go. As ultras go, the JFK is a piece of cake–only one small mountain, and you get it over with early. And we’d had perfect weather. It’s hard for me to imagine minding those leaf-covered rocks at such a pace in a cold rain. It made me realize what a newbie I am to this sport, and well, to life–at knowing myself–how I’ve only but grazed the surface when it comes to getting myself into shape and understanding my own needs, limits and abilities.

On the tow path, my beloved training ground, I relaxed and ran–took my time. I adopted the recommended pacing for first-timers–an on-off combination of running with tiny walk breaks. I ran with a Marine for a long stretch as we seemed to be traveling in a similar pace pattern. We’d pass eachother, then run for a stretch together. People were most friendly and talkative throughout, and there were people from all walks of life.

The day was lovely. I watched the river move, and stared up at points into the endless blue. It was a joy to run along the river, the woods, and the cliffs on that stretch of tow path that was my old stomping grounds–where I used to train before I moved last March. I recalled a lot of my runs there. I had really grown and changed on this familiar stretch of ground. And during that time, I had told myself that someday I would run the JFK, and now here I was, looking from this past perspective as if I were experiencing a tiny sliver of the future rather than the present. It was unique. It was timeless. It was real.

It took me 10 hours and 11 minutes to finish. I didn’t push it. My goal was to finish and enjoy the experience. And I did. Still, I managed to find it in me to sprint across the finish; passed my husband in the crowd on the way, slapped him five. It was a great, strong ending to a wonderful race. Worries of dredging up bad states of mind and fears of where the distance would take me were completely unfounded. I believe this may be due to the fact that all of the early running required a great deal of concentration, and once I reached the flat stretches, I had already reached a euphoric state. I wondered if this would wear off eventually, giving way to fatigue, but it never did. I was ecstatic from mile 28 on–and for the next two days.

Now I have had just a small taste of what is to come. Of this, I was assured by my new friend Anna, who had just run her 15th JFK. She regularly runs 100-milers, so this was for her, but a walk in the park. When she saw me after the race, she asked, “Well, how was it?”

I was still grinning, and before I could gather my thoughts to properly express my full joy and amazment at the experience, I paused as I saw that look of recognition in her eye. She just smiled, and said, “Ah, you’ll be back.”

The strangest thing about the experience, over-all, was how entirely natural it felt.

If you are reading WoW blogs you are probably trying to squeeze the last drop of DPS/Heals/Threat et

If you are reading WoW blogs you are probably trying to squeeze the last drop of DPS/Heals/Threat etc out of your gear.

You possibly use Rawr or the plethora of gear advisory websites. You may even read Elitist Jerks religiously.

If you are 80!

If you are yet 80.

If you are somewhere between 1-79 you are probably feeling a little neglected.

Be Neglected No More!

I’m going to tell you how to min/max your pre-level cap character!

Min/Max =/= Min/Max

Most importantly, the further you are from 80, the less the traditional Min/Max definition applies.

Traditional: Minimizing less important/irrelevant stats, while maximizing the important ones, the ones that will give you the last dps/hps/tps.

Gnomeaggedon’s definition of pre-level cap Min/Maxing:

Expending the minimum amount of effort/gold to achieve the maximum gear result.

Some rules to gear by when leveling.

It doesn’t matter!

There is a good change that you will replace your latest “epic” with the next quest handin/drop. So don’t worry about the small stuff.

When aiming for upgrades look for anything 3,5 even 10 levels ahead – especially quest rewards. The speed at which you can level these days means that you will most likely out level an item as you hand in the quest.

You can live in starting gear. It’s been done before. People have leveled to max level in their starting gear, or even naked. So don’t worry too much if you are level 60 wearing level 50 gear.

Sometimes the old gear is as good, if not better than the new. High end Vanilla gear is better than early Burning Crusade. High level BC gear is better than early Northrend gear.
BUT, it may not be worth the effort to get it!

Sometimes an item looks too good to be true… It’s a quest reward? How easy can that be! Just check that it isn’t a reward at the end of a long chain – you will probably be 3 levels past it and into the next expansion before you get it!

Tools

I’m the kind of guy that is happy to abuse his tools. If I have a hammer in my hand and a screw driver in the shed, I will use the hammer to get that screw in.

You are going to be doing a bit of that with these tools, so don’t be a perfectionist!

Wowhead

Spreadsheet (Excel, GoogleDocs, whatever)

Character Profiler

Rawr

Wowhead.

Until around level 70, Wowhead will be your tool of choice. You could use Rawr, but it is tuned for 80 and Northrend. Sure it has legacy Vanilla and BC data, but now you are using a sledgehammer for get that screw in.

You don’t need a spreadsheet for this stage, but I find it helps to keep it “all on one page”. You are only using it for copy & paste… Don’t panic if you don’t know how to use them!

How to Wowhead your gear into shape.

Create a profile

Refresh from armory

Right click on the item and find upgrades

Tune the filter

Go shopping

Create a Profile

You can create a profile after you get yourself a (free) Wowhead account. Do it!

Just search for your character and save it.

Refresh from armory

If you are returning to your profile, you will probably need to resync your character. Sometimes I find this a little buggy, so to force it to refresh, I search for my character again.

Right click on the item and find upgrades

If you right click on any of the items you will get a menu which includes searching for upgrades.

Tip: Middle click on that option to open it in a new tab – that way you can repeat the process and have all your slots ready for review, while keeping your original page.

Tune the filter

You will find that the filter is already pretty much tuned for your class and spec. Some things to change…

Level required: 0-x (x being your current level).

You want to be looking ahead, so change the x to a few levels ahead, leave the 0 as that includes quest rewards which don’t have a level requirement (quests do, quest rewards don’t)

Additional filters

Some worth considering:

Available in: BC, WoLK (this will exclude the stuff that’s out of your zone range and harder to get items from previous releases)

Source…

Quests, Honor, Crafted by… etc. Understand that with this choice you are really cutting down your options – but maybe, just maybe that’s what you need to do.

Go shopping

Get the items that give you the best bang for your buck. Ignore the items that are too hard/expensive etc.

Get items ahead of your level if they are cheap at that point of time, but be prepared to AH, Shard, Vendor items by the time you can use them as you may have found something better – and you will out level it very very fast.

Dual Spec Delight

If like Squidly and Gnomeaggedon, you are dual spec’d you can flick the Spec selection and refresh the search to find gear for your other spec.

This is where having a spreadsheet helps, because your currently equiped item will have different value based on your spec, so being able to track down the spec-specific item’s wowhead value from last time is handy.

OK, enough for today, I should be able to finish the guide off next time as there is less setup required.

Gnomer and Out, Squidly and Stout!

Every time I see something like this, I just shake my head in disbelief. I applaud the designers for trying to come up with something different. There may actually be a benefit to something like it, although all I can see in the future is a court case.

Let’s be real clear on some things. A camera strap is the ONLY way to successfully, safely carry an expensive DSLR. PERIOD. There are a lot of manufacturers out there that think they can reinvent the wheel. Its round, it rolls, it gets you there in one piece. DO NOT in any circumstance believe what they are selling you. If you look at the market and say “all of these camera straps are designed the same,” you are probably right. There is a very good reason. THEY JUST WORK.

I know what you are saying. Why link to them if you don’t support them? Just take this as a public service announcement from someone who really doesn’t want to see you trash your EOS 1D Mark IV just because you thought it looked cool. As another public service announcement I am going to include a list of links to straps I WOULD ACTUALLY BUY. Stay away from gimmicks. You’ll thank me later.

===[Movelist]===

[Special Moves]

Charge: 214+[D]
-> Charge Burst: durante o Charge, HS
Action Charge: após um Special Move, D
Gunblaze: 214+S
Blockhead Buster: 236+P
Storm Viper: 623+HS
Rock It: 236+S

[Force Breaks]

Fafnir: 41236+D

[Overdrives]

Savage Fang: 632146+P
Tyrant Rave ver. Omega: 632146+HS
Dragon Install Sakkai: 632146+S, P, K, S, HS, D, K, S, 632146+HS

[Instant Kill]

===[Por onde começar]===

===[Okizeme]===

[Evitando reversals]

O Gunblaze causa cross-up e deixa Order-Sol a uma distância segura fora do canto.

===[Mais técnicas]===

[Blockhead Buster]

[Guardando a Charge Gauge]

I sat in the office today listening to the wind howling and the rain lashing. Our office is a converted hay loft with Velux windows – so if it’s raining you know it’s raining. The abating of the rain coincided with lunch time so I went out to the car, grabbed the camera, and started taking shots at the edge of the car park. The sky was pretty dramatic at this point with the sun shining (partly) through and lots of dark grey clouds round about.

Despite the darkness of the clouds, the bright bits in the sky were so bright that to record any detail in them (which I wanted) would mean having to underexpose the foreground. HDR or exposure blending could have been called in to play but I didn’t have my tripod so getting 2 or more images that could be aligned in Photoshop would be difficult. Instead, I put my trusty Cokin P series filter holder on the front of my Canon EF 20mm f/2.8 USM lens and used my Cokin hard edge 3 stop graduated neutral density filter to hold back the brightness of the sky and allow for a balanced exposure.

It’s amazing what we can do in Photoshop these days but I still can’t see by my grad ND filter – it took a few seconds to fit the filter and after importing the image to Lightroom all I had to do was increase the clarity and contrast a little in the clouds then the picture was complete. For me, that’s the most satisfying type of photography, when the image comes off the memory card looking 99% what I expected (and hoped) it would.

It was a good time, if you happened to be there before the festivities got into full swing, and when the bar was actually reachable and wasn’t inundated with scene kids letting their buddies cut in line. Thanks, d-bags. That’s real cool. Any way, I spent most of the night half-cocked and propped against a wall talking to some girl I hit it off with, although I cannot now recall her name. Since the Sugarcube isn’t fully constructed and only the top floors have been completed and are livable, the area we were in resembled that of a warehouse, with, what I came to find, some pretty flaky, dusty, stainy walls. It wasn’t until the next morning when I found my jacket on the ground did I notice that most of it was white from whatever I was leaning against. And it won’t come off. This puts me in the market for a new cadet-style jacket. And isn’t it so apropos that I came across the Seventh Heart’s version the very next day? Yes, it is.

Furthermore, I have been making an effort to consolidate my reusable shopping bags. I think over this past year and a half, I have acquired nearly 20 of them from various companies, whether they be giveaways at farmers’ markets, park events, print shops, grocery stores, promo deals, etc. Adhering to the less is more philosophy, and perhaps to the Mitch Hedberg joke, spending an extra few bucks on a nicer bag would maybe make me care about it a little more. Sure, one that says “STEAL” in big black letters might not be the optimal choice, but I do like being the center of attention. Granted this attention might be that of the crack grocery store detective and security team… Hey. C’est la vie, right?

Ky Kokoro no Ichigeki: acerte o primeiro hit do Ky-Maku Home Run level 3
Gen-Ky Levers: 236236+P

[Instant Kill]

13 Ky-Dan: 236236+HS em IK Mode

===[Por onde começar]===

[Enchendo tension]

[Pressionando no chão]

Outro mix-up é com o 5P.

===[Okizeme]===

[Abusando do 5D]

===[Mais técnicas]===

The next-gen Splatterhouse game has been delayed for quite some time, but that hasn’t stopped Namco Bandai from partnering with Globe Shoes to produce a gory pair of kicks. The fresh pair brandish the Splatterhouse logo and mask, ditching the whole green-blood effect of the 16-bit era for speckles of red blood. Those interested can purchase these at Namco’s online store for $79.99; limited quantities available.

Be it that authentic prison art, a vintage baseball bat, a picture of Zack Morris’s shoes (yes, I found it), or some other item of complete nonsense that may actually border on thoughtful. Neigh, it is actually more thoughtful, as gifts of this caliber require actual thought, gauging the shock and awe on the faces of recipients. I know my father enjoys the golf accessories I usually pack into boxes and wrap up for him each year, but imagine the look when he opens the Wooden Mariner Box. “So, Dad, let me explain. Okay, I know you have shown no particular interest in sea travel, nor did you grow up on the coast, but come on! How cool is this thing? It’s got a compass, a telescope, scale, levels, sight vane, and clinometer for determining angles and slope. I know! A clinometer! You’ve always wanted that. Or at least you never knew you did until now. Now you’re going to wonder how you ever lived without it.”

And while I’ve been on somewhat of an art-kick these past few days, as well, I know a handful of kids that would appreciate a bit of 90s nostalgia on the walls of their place. Good conversation starter, really, and isn’t that just the gift that keeps on giving? That’s the good thing about a print, assuming the recipient hangs it up; Every time they see it, or someone asks about it, you’re obliged to say, “Oh my brother (or friend, depending on the situation), Will, got that for me last Christmas. You like it?” The natural response would be, “Are you kidding? Zack’s shoes immortalized on your wall? I’ve been looking for someone like you forever! That Will sounds like a swell guy!” Aww, thanks.

An den letzten zwei Tagen (Pike on the Fly Teil 3) waren wir dann in Langedijk.

Unterkunft

Adresse vom Bungalowpark De Vlietlanden

De Vlietlanden
Droge Wijmersweg 5
1693 HP Wervershoof

Hier müsste man beim Betreiber nochmal nachfragen.

Was benötigt man sonst noch?

I’ve been listening to too much Christmas music, and have wandered off to the land of sleigh rides and snowmen and hot chocolate by the fire in my head. I caved. The Christmas-mongers have won.

In the spirit of the season (the capitalist spirit, that is), I’ve been thinking of a few things for a Christmas list. Please note that I certainly don’t actually expect these as gifts; rather, its a nice little list of things that I can work my way up to buying for myself.

In no particular order, here it goes:

The Joy of Cooking: Clearly, the ultimate cookbook of all time. I plan on adding it to my collection soon enough.

Garmin Forerunner 305: per my previous complaints of not knowing my mileage. This baby is everything a runner ever needed.

New Running shoes: I currently have long-suffering Mizunos. Time for an upgrade.

Running accessories: Possibly a shoe wallet, or a belt of some sort. Also, a headband.

I’ll come back as I think of more things. Yay for consumerism!

As many people get ready to travel today, I thought it would be fitting to share a site I tripped across. Ever wonder what happens when the TSA takes your knife, tool, scissors, etc? For some of it, the answer is:

They Sell It!

Yes, that’s correct. They sell it on EBay. Sometimes they offer pretty good deals on individual knives or tools. Sometimes they put it in a box and sell 27 pounds of it at once. Personally, I’m not sure how I feel about this. On one hand, it’s an opportunity for someone who has had a knife confiscated to potentially replace it at a low cost. That’s pretty good.

On the other hand, I wonder if there are other items that have been confiscated or lost/left behind at the checkpoint that aren’t for sale. What if I forget an iPod or other piece of technology? Do they auction that, or does someone at the checkpoint keep it?

Also, considering the amount of confusion I typically see at checkpoints, I wonder if there is even more stuff that is out there? They’ve only got three pages of knives up. Isn’t there more?

Go check it out for yourself at their eBay seller site. And as the TSA says, remember 3-1-1…

Three conflicting ways they’ll tell you how to handle the same instruction

One sole agent paying attention in a meaningful way

One lane open while the others are closed

If you’re flying today… Good luck!
