Was ein ausgewachsenes Fest sein will, hat mit ganz eigenen Insignien aufzuwarten. So gelten Hasen in Verbindung mit bemalten Eiern als untrügliches Zeichen für die Osterzeit. Doch deutlicher wird es noch, wenn es auf das Jahresende zugeht, die Tage kürzer werden und die Saison von Glühwein und Spekulatius anbricht. Ja dann steht Weihnachten vor der Tür. Ein Fest, das mit einem riesigen Spektrum verschiedenster Bräuche und Accessoires aufwarten kann.

Einst galt der Weihnachtsmann oder Nikolaus als markanter Vorbote der Weihnacht. Doch nachdem seit Jahren in den Supermärkten Deutschlands ein wahrer Wettstreit darüber ausgebrochen ist, wer als erster die Regale und Gänge mit Schokoweihnachtsmännern vollstopft, ist die Glaubwürdigkeit des rotgewandeten Genossen stark korrumpiert. Man kann sich ja nicht schon im September auf das Weihnachtsfest freuen und diese Freude bis zum tatsächlichen Ereignis konservieren.

Etikettenschwindel?!
Jetzt im November jedoch scheint die Zeit reif. Mieses Wetter. Dunkelheit. Doch plötzlich tauchen überall an zentralen Orten grüne Nadelbäume auf und weisen allein schon durch ihre schiere Größe und dabei doch nicht aufdringlich vorbeilaufende Passanten auf das Bevorstehende hin. Oh Tannenbaum, oh Tannenbaum! Dass es sich hierbei häufig um einen Etikettenschwindel handelt, sollte uns nicht weiter stören. Nicht selten wird nicht etwa einer Tanne die Ehre zuteil, geschmückt und hell erleuchtet für festliche Stimmung zu Sorgen, sondern einer Fichte. Aber “Oh Fichtenbaum, oh Fichtenbaum” dürfte sich wohl kaum in deutschen Gesangsbüchern durchsetzen.

Letzten Donnerstag wurde nun auch in Berlin der Weihnachts-Countdown gestartet. Die Vorbereitungen für den alljährlichen Weihnachtsmarkt an der Gedächtniskirche laufen auf Hochtouren, und der wichtigste Protagonist ist derweil auch eingetroffen: eine 20 Meter hohe Blautanne. Die herausragende Bedeutung dieses Baumes lässt sich auch an der Tatsache festmachen, dass es im Vorfeld eine Art Baum-Casting unter den Berliner Nadel-Schönheiten gab, bei welchem der beste und würdigste Vertreter seiner Art gesucht wurde. Besonderes Augenmerk wurde auf die Berliner Herkunft des Baumes gelegt. Die Verantwortlichen hatten aber auch allen Grund dazu, mit höchster Sorgfalt ans Werk zu gehen. Aus Schaden wird man gemeinhin klug. Und Schäden im Zusammenhang mit Weihnachtsbäumen gab es in den letzten Jahren genug.

Pleiten, Pech und Tannen
Besonders taten sich bei der Reihe „Pleiten, Pech und Tannen“ Bäume aus Bayern hervor. Mal blieben die als nette Geste gemeinten Geschenke beim Antransport unter einer Brücke stecken, mal brachen sie gänzlich auseinander. Wohl nicht ganz zu Unrecht machte im Jahr 2000 ein selten verkümmertes Exemplar als „bayerische Provokation“ von sich Reden und musste noch vor dem 24. Dezember ausgetauscht werden. Bei Letzterem handelte es sich im Übrigen, natürlich, um eine Fichte. Mehr muss man dazu wohl nicht sagen.

Dieses Jahr fiel die Wahl übrigens auf eine Tanne aus Lichtenberg. Das hauptstadtstudio gratuliert und wird sich in den nächsten Wochen bestimmt noch ein genaueres Bild vor Ort machen.

Außerdem geben die Photos einen ersten Eindruck von dem, was passierte. Einige Teilnehmer baten mich aus Angst vor Schikanen, dass ich sie von hinten fotografiere, möglichst ohne Gesicht – weil sie Angst haben müssen, dass der iranische Geheimdienst diese Fotos gegen sie verwendet.

So zumindest stellt sich die Kino-Kette CineStar einen gelungenen Berlin Aufenthalt vor. Der Original Text auf einer auf dem Tagesspiegel aufgehefteten Werbeseite besagter Kinokette lautet: “Mauer weg, Stadtschloss fehlt, Gedächtniskirche kaputt – gehen Sie doch in eines unserer sieben CineStar Kinos. ” Da wünscht man sich als Berliner und Touristiker einen etwas sensibleren Umgang mit der Berliner Geschichte…

Wahrscheinlich seit ihr alle schon aus dem Alter rausgewachsen um Bilder noch mit Buntstiften auszumalen, trotzallem halten sich manche noch jung durch Tätigkeiten aus ihrer Kindheit, oder tun dies mit ihren Kindern zusammen.

Mal wieder etwas kritzeln, egal ob drinnen nach draußen, von oben nach unten, rechts nach links oder anders herum.

Het is gelukt: de spaarvarkens zijn vol! Al jaren staan in winkels, musea en zeer veel andere openbare plaatsen spaarpotten om geld in te zamelen voor de verbouwing van de Gedächtniskirche. In totaal is 4,2 miljoen nodig en dat bedrag is (bijna) in kas dankzij hulp van gemeente en rijk. Die springen met bijna 2 miljoen subsidie bij om het symbool uit de oorlog iets minder bouwvallig te maken.

Steenadoptie, voegenvoogdij, je kunt het zo gek niet bedenken of het is mogelijk bij de Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche. De kerk, hét symbool van oorlog en vernietiging, moest en zou behouden blijven voor Berlijn. De acties hebben nu succes. Oké, er is nog een ton nodig, maar niemand twijfelt meer dat ook dat geld in de richting van het Breitscheidplatz zal stromen.

In 1943 beschadigden oorlogsbommen de toren van de Gedächtniskirche. Voor veel Berlijners is de kerk een symbool van hoop: de ruïne bleef als enige gebouw op het Breitscheidplatz na de oorlog behouden. Op de begane grond bevindt zich een permanente herdenkingstentoonstelling.

De Gedächtniskirche, waarvan de toren een opknapbeurt krijgt. Het lage donkergrijze gebouw ervoor werd in 1961 bijgebouwd en dient als kerk.

Een verbouwing is nodig ook, om het instortingsgevaar tegen te gaan. Nog dit jaar zal de ruïnerenovatie beginnen. De bouwmethoden zijn hoogtechnologisch: met laserstralen zal de toren een driedimensionale ‘’scan’ ondergaan. Een kostensparende en snelle methode. Vervolgens kunnen de constructeurs in de computer zien waar de de toren versterking nodig heeft. Elke steen, elk stukje mortel krijgt een check op detailniveau. De ‘nieuwe’ Gedächtniskirche moet in de herfst 2011 klaar zijn. Juist op tijd om het 50-jarig jubileum van de vorige verbouwing (17 december 1961, door architect Egon Eiermann) te herdenken.

Day 2 started off with another walking tour of the city, this time to the beautiful district of Charlottenburg. Directly underneath the S-Bahn station at Savignyplatz was an excellent art bookstore called Bücherbogen, where I found this incredible English-German book on controversial cultural buildings of the 20th century for only €4.95.

We proceeded to the Gedächtniskirche, which was built in the 1890s in honour of Kaiser Wilhelm I, the first German emperor, and heavily bombed by the British air force during the Battle of Berlin in 1943. The only remaining part of the original church is the entrance hall and tower above it, which damaged spire has never been reconstructed, in order to serve as a memorial to the horrors of war. Two concrete and glass buildings by Egor Eiermann now accompany the tower – a clock tower and a main church. As I learnt in my GER 101 textbook, Berliners enjoy coining nicknames, and refer to these two buildings as the “Lippenstift” (lipstick) and “Puderdose” (powder box) respectively due to their somewhat comical apperarances. Despite the unflattering exterior, the inside of the church, well-illuminated through the cobalt blue stained-glass windows, is stunningly beautiful by day, and the simple figure of Christ suspended at the front is more memorable than any fancy statue I have seen in a place of worship.

A quick lunch of onion bread, copious amounts of blue cheese and a slice of apfelstrudel at KaDeWe was followed by a trip to Humboldt Universität, where our group met with Professor Joseph Vogl, who teaches at both Humboldt and Princeton. He gave us an introduction to the university and took our questions on the university itself, the German education system, as well as everything about Berlin. While we were talking about interesting attractions in Berlin, I asked him whether the other top university in Germany, the equally famous Freie Universität Berlin, was worth a visit. His answered with a prompt and determined “Überhaupt nicht!” (absolutely not!). As it turns out, Humboldt and the Freie Universität share a rivalry not dissimilar to that between Princeton and Harvard. It’s a small world after all!

Being a history enthusiast I of course could not miss out on the Deutsches Historisches Museum near the university. The main building, which stands to the right of the Neue Wache, was converted from an old arsenal. An extension by I.M. Pei (of Louvre Pyramid fame) was added behind the main building in 2004 to house the temporary exhibitions. As I will be visiting Berlin again once the Princeton-in-Munich program ends, I chose to see only the temporary exhibits on this visit so that I can enjoy everything slowly. I first saw a photo exhibition titled “1989: Bilder einer Zeitenwende” (1989: Photographs of the Turn of an Era), which commerated the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berliner Mauer, as well as the subsequent reunification of Germany.

In addition to showing renowned images of 1989 Berlin like this one, the exhibition also had an international section which chronicled events happening at around the same time, for example mass demonstrations in Prague. One photo that stood out from this section was that of the Unknown Rebel blocking the advance of military tanks at Tiananmen Square. Though I have seen the picture for too many times to count (and even wrote my main college admission essay on it), I stared at the one in the museum for quite a while – taking in the bitter irony of the fact that democracy in my country was brutally pushed back when almost everywhere in the world it made an enormous leap forward. I hope there will be a day when the Tiananmen Square Protests will be given its due recognition and receive appropriate redress. And I hope that the fighters for freedom will be still around on this day to witness it.

Another temporary exhibition, titled “Deutsche und Polen: 1.9.39“, was much larger, and dealt primarily with Poland, a country of which I have very little knowledge. It chronicled the complex relationship between the German and Polish nations since the mid-18th century – from the First Partioning of Poland by the Prussian, Austrian and Russian Empires, re-establishment of the Polish nation first by the Congress of Vienna, then by the Paris Peace Conference, to the Holocaust and post-war German-Polish cooperation. My favourite exhibit was without a doubt a handwritten document by Frederick the Great dealing with the first partioning. It reminded me to purchase plenty of Frederick the Great merchandise at the museum gift shop afterwards!

On my visit to St. Hedwig’s Kathedrale on Day 1, I found out that there would be a free concert performed by the Wurzburger Domchor on this day. Being a very responsible vice-president of a similar ensemble, I could not miss out on this opportunity, correct? So not only did I go to the concert, I also brought along seven others. We went 30 minutes early in order to grab the best seats, and our efforts were not unrewarded – we sat in the first row, which was a perfect place for enjoying the brilliant acoustics of the cathedral. The choir definitely did not disappoint – from the first piece onwards I was impressed by their fine voices (tenors were exceptionally good) and absolutely wonderful blending. And though there were two Palestrina pieces which I didn’t quite like, everything else was great. Two of the pieces they performed are ones that I sang at Princeton – Charles Stanford’s Beati quorum via* and Maurice Duruflé’s Ubi caritas et amor*, and at the risk of annoying Penna, I shall say that the Wurzburger Domchor showed me how the two pieces should be done. I might also add that their rendition of the very famous O Magnum Mysterium* by Morten Lauridsen sent chills down my spine. Unfortunately, the choir didn’t have any CDs for sale after the concert, but if they had, I would definitely have bought them. (*Note that all links are to performances by other choirs.)

We topped off the night with a visit to the Reichstagsgebäude, which glass dome reminded me why Norman Foster is one of the best architects of our time. The geometry was so strikingly beautiful that it seemed to be an otherworldly creation, and I of course couldn’t stop taking photos of it. The sun had already set, but from the top of the dome we still enjoyed the view of the city. It wasn’t a particularly splendid view, but the building itself had already made the visit well worth its while.

Reichstagsgebäude by night

Da steht es: Berlin. In voller Pracht. Es leuchtet in der Sonne, es ist groß und gebogen. 

Die Rede ist von der Skulptur “Berlin” des Künstlerehepaars Matschinsky-Denninghoff, das auf der Tauentzienstraße unweit der Gedächtniskirche aufgestellt ist. Seit 1987 steht die massive Skulptur aus Stahl dort. Titel und Form verknüpfen es eng mit der Stadt. Die Skulptur ist zweigeteilt, aber doch sind die beiden Teile eng verschlungen. Sie greifen ineinander doch sie berühren sich nicht. Geteilt und doch zusammen. Eine treffende Darstellung der Situation zum Entstehungszeitpunkt. Doch wie ist das heute? Ist Berlin immer noch so geteilt? Oder sollten sich die beiden Teile eng aneinander schmiegen?

 Während ich mich das frage, setzt sich eine Taube auf die Skulptur und ich wende meine Aufmerksamkeit dem künstlerischen Aspekt der Skulptur zu. Sie ist riesig und glänzend. Sie ähnelt einem Bündel aus dicken Stahlseilen, das die eigentlich Form bildet. Für ihre Größe ist sie erstaunlich fließend und dynamisch. Steh man an der richtigen Stelle, kann man durch den Bogen die Gedächtniskirche sehen. Wie eingerahmt steht sie da. Menschen und Autos strömen vorbei. Irgendwie wirkt dieses mächtige Gebilde hier deplatziert. Ringsherum eine glitzernde Shopping-Welt: Plakate, Marken, Einkaufstüten, Touristen. In all dem wirkt diese Skulptur wie ein Anker. Eine Stelle zum festhalten. Fest, echt, beständig. Das ist Berlin, geteilt, vereint, uneindeutig, echt. Nicht wie die künstliche Einkaufswelt die sich rings um diese Skulptur ausbreitet und die sich nur Touristen leisten können. Nein so ist Berlin nicht, und so soll es auch nicht werden.

Am Abend vor dem kalendarischen Frühlingsanfang spiegeln sich die Strahlen der untergehende Sonne und die Gedächtniskirche in den Fenstern des Europacenters am Berliner Breitscheidplatz…

Last night Austin did some of his magic with Google Earth and figured out the best path to ride our bikes from Heidelberg to Speyer.  Some websites said that it would take about 2 hours to get there at a comfortable place.  Apparently they never got lost though.  It took us about 4 hours to get there after we finished all of our backtracking.

We left the apartment around 9:30 and headed off towards Schwetzingen.  I had written down the directions (pretty detailed I might say) and we didn’t make it through number 1 before we got lost.  Eventually we got on the right path again and found our way to Schwetzingen and from there the directions went pretty smoothly.  We didn’t really stop in Schwetzingen but we did get to see the gardens and the castle from the other end (from when we visited there at the end of September).  The rest of the bike ride was a series of paved trails that run through farmland with a mixture of interesting smells and small “towns” that are really more like neighborhoods.  Not quite the scenery we were expecting but there weren’t many cars so it was nice and relaxing.  

We crossed the Rhein River to Speyer and made our way right to the cathedral which is pretty impossible to miss.  We first walked around the building that was constructed between 1030 and 1071 and saw what we assumed was an old fortress for the city.  We also looked down and saw some people getting ready to do their own little “Midiæval Combat Club.”  

We grabbed something to eat in Speyer at a bakery but saved room for desert that we scoped out before at a chocolaterie.  Before we had dessert though, we looked around for a church that I had seen from the distance but couldn’t find once we lost the spier from the skyline.  We couldn’t find it but we did find some pretty fun swings and walked through the area of the city where the people actually live.  At the patisserie, Austin got something that I forgot the name but it was kind-of like a coconut marshmallow on top of a sweet biscuit with mango puree and fresch fruit on top and I got the chocolate Mousse.  They were both delicious!

We were just getting ready to leave so we could make it back before it got too dark but once we got into the outskirts of town I showed Austin the spier of the church we were looking for and he asked if I wanted to try again.  We rode our bikes this time and found it pretty quickly.  It was definitely worth going back even though we did have to ride in the dark a little bit.  It’s called the Gedächtniskirche (Church of Memories).

The way back home only took us about an hour and a half to two hours but it was also a little less exciting since we were just going through the same flat farmland again.  It was a fun way to see a little bit of the German countryside and there are less crazy people on the bike paths/rural roads than there are on the public trains and buses!

De Gedächtnis-Kirche, of beter gezegd de oude toren, staat al jaren op instorten. Geschat wordt dat er zo’n 3,5 miljoen Euro nodig is voor de herstelwerkzaamheden. De kerkgemeente krijgt dit geld maar niet bij elkaar, vandaar dat de broodnodige reparaties steeds worden uitgesteld. Lotto-geld moet nu uitkomst bieden.

Burgemeester Klaus Wowereit maakte begin september bekend dat de Lotto-Stichting 1 miljoen Euro schenkt aan de kerk. Wowereit is tevens voorzitter van de Berlijnse Lotto-Stichting. Deze stichting beslist over de verdeling van de gelden.

Vrij spel
De oude toren is van natuursteen en mede doordat de spits ontbreekt hebben regen en wind hebben vrij spel. Ook het drukke verkeer aan de Kurfüstendamm en de Budapester Strasse doen de toren geen goed. Gevreesd wordt dat delen van de toren gebouw naar beneden zullen storten.

Eerbetoon
De Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtnis-Kirche werd precies 118 jaar geleden officieel in gebruik genomen. Het was Keizer Wilhelm II die de kerk liet bouwen als religieus eerbetoon aan zijn grootvader Keizer Wilhelm I. Vijf torens telde het gebouw aan de Breitscheidplatz. Een daarvan haalde de 113 meter en was daarmee de hoogste toren van Berlijn.

Spitsloos
In november 1943 werd de Gedächtnis-Kirche bijna volledig vernietigd. Alleen de hoofdtoren bleef gedeeltelijk staan, zei het zonder spits en daardoor nog maar 68 meter hoog. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog waren er plannen om de ruïne te slopen en een nieuwe kerk te bouwen. Dit stuitte echter op veel weerstand en besloten werd om de toren te behouden als een soort aandenken tegen de oorlog.

Spannungsvollen Einheit
De nieuwe Gedächtnis-Kirche, bestaande uit een kerk, toren, kapel en foyer werd om de oude toren heengebouwd. Ze nemen als het ware de ruïne in hun midden en ‘bewahren so Altes und Neues in einer spannungsvollen Einheit’.

Rettet den Turm
De Stichting Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtnis-Kirche is zelf gestart met de campagne ‘Rettet den Alten Turm’. Een speciaal rekeningnummer is geopend waarop je geld kunt overmaken voor de werkzaamheden. Want met de 1 miljoen aan Lotto-gelden zijn ze er natuurlijk nog lang niet…

Da steh ich vor ihr, sie ist völlig zerstört und doch wunderschön. Ich verlier mich, träume und bin trotzdem wach. Wahrscheinlich wäre dieses Gebäude nicht so schön, wäre es makellos, vom Krieg nicht in Mitleidenschaft gezogen. Strahlt eine wunderbare Stärke aus. -Ein unglaublich magischer Moment.

Nach einer Weile gehe ich rein, zünde eine Kerze an, für meine zwei Lieben. Es geht mir gut. Danach erfüll ich mir einen klitze kleinen Traum: Die erste Currywurst in meinem Leben und die sollte immer in Berlin sein. Und durch diesen Moment durch Zufall nochmal besser… besser als es sich vorher vorzustellen.

Berlin pulsiert. Unglaublich. Alles Kunst, alles Freiheit.

KaDeWe (Kaufhaus des Westens) ble selfvølgelig besøkt og Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche ble fotografet. Ellers så ble det aviser, kaffe, mat og et par øl på fortausrestauranter. Sløv dag.

I dag, søndag, skal jeg se litt andre ting. Men først frokost…
