Big Bang Theory on CBS & Warner Channel

Es curioso como se han movido las modas al punto que hoy nos encontramos, lo Geek es la onda, y no es exageración, no por nada el éxito de la serie “The Big Bang Theory”; todos nos hemos llegado a sentir identificados con alguno de sus freakies y chistoretos personajes.

A mi entender esto viene de la onda indie, que al combinarse con la onda 80era, en especial con la onda New Wave, dieron como resultado personajes flacuchos, esponjados (del cabello) con ropas al más puro estilo de una caja fuerte, y claro esta los lentes gruesos, y era facil encontrar este look en integrantes de bandas de “indie” como Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah!, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Kings of Leon, The Raconteurs, Cobra Starship, etc. Y de esta misma manera ha repercutido en la estética de una serie de películas que han causado un gran interés, dígase Juno, Super Bad, The 40 Year Old Virgin, Year One… en fin.

Para todos aquellos que se dan gusto con esta movida, aquí les dejo un excelente sitio web que les dará tela pa’ explorar en la red, esta fue creada por Wellington Grey, un obsesivo personaje, geek por naturaleza, que en 2007 nos regalo este sitio: Periodic Table of the Internet.

Como lo podrán ver, es una tabla periódica que tiene una gran cantidad de sitios web separados por su funcionalidad, es una joya para curiosear y que a todo cibernauta explorador no le puede faltar!

Et voici ma dernière acquisition ! Je l’attendais depuis longtemps mais voilà je n’avais pas trouvé celui que je voulais… Sitôt sorti, sitôt acheté et je ne le regrette pas.

Le notebook HP/compaq 311c a un écran 11′, sortie HDMI et VGA (une condition capitale pour moi, car je branche mon ordi sur ma télé pour regarder des séries), 1GO de ram (un peu faible mais j’y ai rajouté deux GO supplémentaires) et windows XP 3 (je ne voulais pas Vista, ni 7), 140 GO, une très bonne carte graphique pour sa taille… sans compter la technologie ion !

Voilà c’était mon cadeau de 25 ans, et oui on ne se refait pas

Si vous hésitiez encore à faire l’acquisition d’un notebook, je vous le recommande – surtout qu’à 349€, le rapport qualité-prix est inbattable !

O game Lego Rock Band foi idealizado pra atingir um público de uma faixa etária mais baixa. Mas com certeza os adultos vão amar. A seleção dos artistas está muito boa. Como já comentamos aqui no blog, além de Blur, Pink, David Bowie agora anunciaram a presença do clássico Queen.

Há uma razão muito científica para isso: homens são extremamente visuais na seleção natural da parceira com quem vão procriar e perpetuar a espécie, buscam características físicas marcantes como seios fartos, cintura fina e um quadril mais arrendondado onde supostamente seria o melhor ambiente para boa formação dos bebês.Mulheres tendem a buscar características que evidenciem a capacidade do macho de cuidar da prole como boa condição financeira, status, inteligência. Por isso os Geeks já são uma espécie digamos ovulativa. E o Geek do momento é o criador do Facebook Mark Zuckerberg.

Hello les gens…

Oui j’ai honte, je ne viens presque plus ici, mais il faut dire que je suis débordée au travail, que je cherche une stagiaire rédactrice/blogueuse introuvable, que j’ai été malade pendant tout le mois de mars et qu’ensuite j’ai du préparer mes vacances à NY (c’est dans un mois je vous raconterai ça!).

Mais depuis quelques jours, je revis ! Pourquoi ? Parce que j’ai enfin mon iPhone d’amour tiens ! Des mois que j’attendais que les vilains de chez Orange perdent le monopole afin que les gentils de chez SFR puissent abreuver leurs clients de cette petite merveille hautement technologique. Le voici, le voilà, il est mien et je ne le quitte plus (deux mois que je l’ai réservé, faut pas pousser mémé dans les orties quand même, je l’ai bien mérité). Autant vous dire que si vous avez encore un doute :  Foncez, ne réfléchissez même plus et dégainez votre CB ! Internet, Ô Internet, toujours avec moi tu es (et lire Public Le Monde dans le métro ça claque !). Je suis R-A-V-I-E !!!

ps : oui bon je sais je suis une intoxiquée de la technologie… Prochain achat un mini PC !!! J’en veux un, j’en veux un !!!!!

Its been quite a while since I posted on this blog. I’ve been busy with school and most of my posts go to http://www.thefloppyhat.com — but I do feel the need to rant about something from time to time. The rant that I’m about to embark on was spurred by this post and the comments appertaining thereto (I’m not entirely sure I used that word correctly, but it was kind of fun).

Now, don’t get me wrong. I love RMC over at GoNintendo. The guy is amazing, he’s loves gaming, and specifically loves Nintendo, and he runs a great site. My issue really isn’t even with the commenters per se. No, rather my issue is that somehow many Nintendo fans simply don’t understand why “core gamers” (whatever that phrase means) have issues with Nintendo. Let me try to explain.

Most of those who comment on GoNintendo, as far as I can tell, stuck with Nintendo through the (admittedly) sparse N64 and GameCube days. Now, the N64 was a great system. My brothers and I spent hours playing Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. Ocarina of Time is still, quite possibly, my favorite Zelda (though, to be fair, I haven’t played Twilight Princess yet). These fans had other systems as well, and they enjoyed those systems, but they stuck with Nintendo. They were loyal. Kudos to them. Their loyalty is now being rewarded. Nintendo’s star is on the rise. They have recently received a new Smash Bros. game that is awesome. Not too long ago new Mario and Zelda games that were equally great. Pikmin is supposedly in the works, as are many other games (Mario and Zelda teams working, etc, etc).

But, I think these fans have forgotten something important: people like me. I was never particularly loyal to Nintendo. Partially because my parents didn’t want me owning three consoles at a time, and partially because my favorite Genre has always been RPGs. The NES and SNES were great for RPGs. The N64 not so much, and although the GameCube had a few gems, it paled in comparison to the PS2…I’d probably say it pulled up about even, when speaking of RPGs with the original Xbox. So, what did I do during the decade before the Wii? It’s simple really, I went where the games that I wanted to play were, and that was on the PlayStation and PS2.

My story is not unique. So, what does this have to do with Nintendo currently? Those of us who jumped ship were treated to a plethora of AAA titles. FF7, FF8, FF9 released very quickly. No seven year wait for us. No sir. Add in to that various Tales games, as well as the Suikoden series, and several other great titles, and we were up to our ears in great games–and that was only in one genre! Once we start throwing in Action/Adventure games, and other genres we didn’t know what to do with ourselves.

Now, those of us who jumped ship have no returned to Nintendo. Most of us have other systems as well, but we also got a Wii. Maybe we were taken in by the motion stuff. Maybe we decided to bet on Nintendo being the leader, and so getting a ton of third party support. Maybe we just decided that Sony had gone crazy, and Microsoft was still the Evil Empire. Whatever the reason, we picked up the Wii. We are the ones who are saying to Nintendo…”uhh…it’s been two years, can we have another Zelda–please?” Many of us are just waiting for Arc Rise Fantasia, which looks like the first attempt at a full-blown RPG for the Wii. Yeah, Opoona had some neat ideas and Tales of Symphonia 2 was fun, but none of them were quite what we were looking for. I spent the first year just catching up on GameCube RPGs, so I didn’t have any complaints there. After that the Virtual Console interested me, and I had fun there. But now, where are my RPGs?

Yeah, I know that RPGs take time. I know its not Nintendo’s fault that third parties seemingly can’t manage to make a good game on the RPG (though, to be fair, there are some great ones…Zack and Wiki come to mind, and the Conduit looks like it’ll be fun, and I heard BoomBlox was awesome). But we were treated to multiple RPGs a year! A year! A three or four year wait between good games really isn’t acceptable to us. Maybe we’re wrong. Maybe we’re impatient. But three years is really our upper limit. A capable team can make a great game in three years. An awesome team, like the ones at Ninty, can make a phenomenal game in three years.

So, for you Nintendo fans out there who just can’t understand why some of us still aren’t happy with Nintendo, try to understand…we’re not used to the long wait. We got used to regular releases of great games within one genre. That’s not to say there weren’t famines from time to time, but they were only a year long. Now, over the course of the next year, there are some promising RPGs scheduled for release on the Wii, I admit that–but they aren’t here yet. For now, we sit a wait for games we want to play. Don’t get me wrong, there are some great games on the Wii. For some of us they’re not interesting, they don’t fall within our fairly limited genre preferences. For others, even those good games are too few and far between.

One final, only slightly related, thought. I’ve always found it interesting that the “winner” of each generation has been the console with the best/most RPGs. NES had some great ones, SNES had even more (though Sega did get a few gems), Playstation hands down, PS2 hands down…now who will it be? I think its still too early to tell, but I’d say its currently pretty close on the RPG front. Nintendo may be way ahead in consoles sold, and that does make for a difficult to surmount lead–my hope is that lead will cause third party publishers to start throwing money at the Wii.

It’s not that we hate Nintendo. We just want some of the games that we want on the system. That’s all.

Firstly, condolences to the family, friends and fans of John Updike, who has passed away at the age of 76. A great writer will be sorely missed.

On a happier note, congratulations to Neil Gaiman on his book “Graveyard” winning a Newbery award. Yeah, I know. It does seem a bit incongruous that the king of obscure horror would win the quintessential Children’s book award. I think I might wait a couple of years before I start addding that to the missus’s collection…

Addendum: I didn’t realize that he had also written “Coraline” – which you might have seen the trailers for on tv quite a bit recently. So if you aren’t familiar with him (BUT you really should be – Neverwhere is a great place to start) that can perhaps explain my… slight bemusement. But hey, props given where props due.

Si, estoy feliz porque por fin Obama es el nuevo Mr. President de los United, pero si me molesta esode que la gente cree que arreglará a México. Anyways, mi feliicdad se basa más en como hasta este momento ha hecho historia y la seguirá haciendo. Eso de congelar sueldos y cerrar Guantanamo han sido movimientos para reconocer.

Dentro del listado de las 500 supercomputadoras del mundo encontramos diferentes SO como Windows, BSD, Mac, Unix y Linux. Pero cual es el sistema operativo que mas se ocupa??? Acaso sera Windows??? nah… no lo creo… Solo hay 5 de 500!!!!!! La mayor parte son Linux, ocupando el 85.40% traducido en 427 de 500!!!!!! Realmente no me explico porque. Dos de esas computadoras orgullosamente las tenemos en México, la mas renombrada es la Kam-Balam que es propiedad de la UNAM y tiene nada mas y nada menos que 1368 procesadores AMD Opteron de 2.6 GHz y 3016 de memoria RAM. 768 discos duros que suman 160 TB de almacenamiento. Todo esto funcionando con Linux…. Ocupa el lugar 126 a nivel mundial. Pero eso si… nada mas sirve pa geekear un rato :p.

Por su parte la mas rapida del mundo es la IBM Roadrunner que se encuentra en Nuevo Mexico, Estados Unidos. Se dice que esta computadora es hibrida, porque generalmente las computadoras usan una sola arquitectura de procesadores y esta tiene 12,960 IBM PowerXcell 6,480 AMD Opteron Dual-Core. Tiene 103.6 TB de memoria de almacenamiento y 51.8 TB de Ram. La cual tambien funciona con Linux!!! Mmmm creo que esta si te sirve para renderear video…. No, tristemente esta supercomputadora es usada para el diseño del armamento nuclear de EUA

Asi que ustedes sabran que sistema operativo usar… todo es respetable.. pero yo…. cada vez estoy mas convencido de que hice una buena eleccion al elegir Linux

Jajajaa navegando por youtube me tope con unos videos con el titulo de “why geeks are sexys” (porque los geeks son sexys) y este en particular me dio mucha risa el titulo es “are mac geeks sexier?” y la respuesta es…. no…. Los linuxeros somos mas sexys… ohhh si…

En un rato de oscio geek con mi primo, mientras virtualizabamos SO se nos ocurrio abrir el stellarium el me hacia burla porque a diferencia mia el tiene 4 GB, yo tengo 1 GB asi que mientras el tenia virtualizado 3 sistemas operativos yo solo tenia uno y no pude arrancar correctamente el stellarium por problemas con mi RAM mientras que el en tono de burla me dijo “estoy viendo las estrellas acostado en el pasto” yo solo me rei y conteste “Como ve un geek las estrellas??? en su stellarium” espero que disfruten esta anecdota

Gracias a la tecnologia CUDA de Nvidia la gran potencia de las GPU (tarjetas graficas) se empieza a explotar de una manera eficaz. Uno de los usos que se les da es en criptografia .
Elcomsoft desarrollo una aplicacion llamada Distributed Password Recovery, orientada a revelar contraseñas de diferentes tipos de documentos como RAR, ZIP, PDF y la que da motivo a este post, los cifrados WEP, basandose en la tecnologia CUDA que permite que esta informacion sea revelada incluso 20 veces mas rapido que con un CPU. Asi que si eres un paranoico de seguridad informatica informate un poco mas :p

CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) es una aplicacion desarrollada por Nvidia para explotar la potencia de las tarjetas graficas. Se ha descubierto que las tarjetas graficas pueden realizar cierto tipo de procesos mas rapidos que los CPUs. Sin embargo estas mismas no podrian suplantar un CPU ya que su potencia se debe a que estan pensadas para desarrollar unicamente una tarea que es el calculo de variables en coma flotante, predominantes en los graficos 3D.
Lo que hace la tecnologia CUDA es por asi decirlo traducir procesos del CPU al lenguaje de las GPUs (tarjetas graficas) y que esta misma los lleve a cabo.

Esta nueva categoria la quiero estrenar con un pequeño post de como me quedo el escritorio de mi cuarto. Ayer ordene todo mi cuarto y esta es una imagen de como quedo mi escritorio

So, as I mentioned in a comment earlier, this evening I setup Mandy’s primary Windows machine to type Hebrew, right to left, with a decent keymap (by decent, I mean phonetic, more or less). In fairness, this was nearly as painless as setting up a new Hebrew keymap in Linux–largely mad so because of the SBL. They provide keymaps for Windows (and Mac!) which make things quite easy. Double click an install file and viola! In the process I learned a bit more about Hebrew and keymaps. Apparently Tiro is similar to a Modern Israeli keyboard, and its supposed to allow fast typing. That’s all fine, but since I don’t really want to learn a new keyboard layout (if I did, I’d obviously be using a dvorak keyboard instead of slow qwerty), its far easier just to use a phonetic keymap for Hebrew (ie, q=ק or v=ו or t=ת). Mandy feels the same way, and so the SIL keymap won out. Still, having options is always a good thing.

While I was reading up on keymaps and installing the proper one on Mandy’s computer, I found myself thinking about productivity generally. Specifically productivity on a computer. Ultimately, my computer needs to help me get things done. Some might term this “achieving your focal concerns,” but that’s entirely to erudite for me. Eyecandy and whatnot is cute, but if it doesn’t help me get things done it’s superfluous to any operation I might desire to undertake on a computer.

This is, consequently, one of the reasons I love Ubuntu so much. Especially with the new(ish) effects that one can achieve with compiz. There are assuredly plenty of useless effects that serve no purpose other than to say, “yes, we can do that.” However, some of the effects, such as Expo and various window switchers are quite helpful. I’ve actually removed my bottom panel in gnome, and find that with my new setup I am able to navigate between tasks/windows much more quickly than I could before (see some screenshots below, because at the end of the day, eyecandy is still eyecandy). Organizing my tasks on different sides of the cube, according to type is easy and helpful. Overall, I’m extremely pleased with my new setup in terms of productivity.

I know plenty of you use Macs, and at least a couple use Linux. What effects or tools do you find are most helpful at increasing your productivity? I’m not talking about individual programs such as a task manager or scheduler that might help you stay organized in life, but rather specific things that help you be more productive while using your computer.

So, yesterday I upgraded from Ubuntu 7.04 to 8.04. When I was back on 7.04 I was able to type Hebrew characters as well as Greek characters with accents, breathing marks, etc. Given my status as a student and aspiring Biblical scholar, such abilities are a must for my operating system.

My only problems were that the keymaps for both Greek and Hebrew seemed a little…odd. So, when I installed 8.04, I wanted to at least attempt to find a more intuitive keymap. Ubuntu now comes standard with a Biblical Hebrew keymap (located under “Israel” in the keyboard selector). However, the keymap appears to be less than finished; or perhaps I just couldn’t figure it out. Regardless, it was not the intuitive keyboard for which I was hoping.

If I may digress a bit, intuitive, to me, has to do with sound. For instance, patach and kamets should be mapped to the A on my keyboard. Final letters should be, generally speaking, typed by using shift+.

After a bit of googling, I found exactly the thing I wanted. Even more amazingly, is the work of Vern Poythress! I didn’t even know the man used Linux, let alone made keymaps for it. Interestingly, the article linked above is new as of this month (Aug. 2008). Anyway, I had already installed SBL Hebrew, and so it was simply a matter of copying the keymap files to the correct places (a fairly easy operation, made even easier by the walkthrough provided), and selecting them using the Gnome keyboard selector. Now I can type in Biblical Hebrew (including accents and vowels) as well as Polytonic (ie, classical) Greek with ease.

Mandy is again jealous that I use Linux. Her response when I began typing Joshua 1.1 in Hebrew, with CTL enabled in OpenOffice; “What?! You don’t have to type backwards?” No. No I don’t.
