Geez, it feels like South By Southwest 2009 just happened. And already a flurry of bands have been announced for the 2010 incarnation of Austin’s biggest music event. A few Japanese bands will be heading out to Texas next March, including Osaka freak outs Acid Mothers Temple and rock outfit Boom Boom Satellites. Joining them will be Caucus, Geeks and Maruosa…who I hadn’t heard of before, but will now check out. Thanks to JPOP Lover for posting this information. About three years ago I’ve been trying this OS since it was in Edgy version, some friends has gave me an information about it, and gave me my first ubuntu’s CD. A years after that, my mentor (actually my docent)  gave the formal instructional method for installation and briefing configuration. It is always fun to have a new knowledge and of course it burst me up to conduct my own PC with ubuntu.

The biggest problem for the early situation was I didn’t have an internet connection to have online repository, so I was stuck fora while, until my docent give me a tips for it. He gave me a complete repository for Ubuntu Feisty Fawn distribution for about 20 GB… yes it was a big pain for my hardisk spaces! ough! but it worth fit!
Later I wrote the instruction and having an easy software installation locally for sure! and of course a lot of my friends ask me for teach them with the same method…

Right now I’ve been using the latest ubuntu version, named Karmic Koala distribution or Ubuntu version 9.10 but it’s not a Life Time Support Distribution (LTS), but I thinks it really worth fit to try from a zero installation, not from upgrade version. So now I want to tell you about the instructional methos for install a brand new ubuntu, with Karmic Koala distribution.

First of all, we have to get the Ubuntu installation CD’s that we can get from ubuntu official website or from other place, while there’s local domain or from around the world with a lot of  language version. For you that have an IIX or Indonesian Internet Exchange Connection, you can get it  from local university that gave a lot of support for us, such as from kambing.ui.ac.id or you can buy the CD’s from juragan.kambing.ui.ac.id, well if you confused you just have to search in Mr. Google for the last choice…

I mean, I knew they were gone — the Muppets I remember at least. These were the Muppets who were kid-friendly but still cool for adults to watch. These were the Muppets who appeared on Saturday Night Live and kept The Muppet Show going.

I thought they would be gone forever, but they are back. Parents can watch The Muppets with their kids again! Praise Jeebus!

Have you been copying him on all the meeting minutes with his people? If not, summarize the results at a high level and send that report. Offer him a chance to comment on higher-level requirements.  Also, offer him a chance to delve into detail on any section. If you still do not receive any response, have your manager approach him with a basic question: “Do you trust your people enough for them to approve the requirements?” Have your manager get that in writing. The reason for not getting back to you may simply be that he is swamped with making revenue-driven decisions. He may really trust his people completely. You do not know.

What market boundaries are artificially set? Yes, artificially. Market boundaries are not concrete walls. It is just seen that way due to the way the industry lags behind what could be. Industry standards are just that…they are the common practices that all the participants have agreed to follow.

The first rule to effectively change your business strategy is to accept that boundaries are artificially set. It will not be easy. Exploring outside the accepted norm will bring the nay-sayers out in the open. “This is how we have always done it” is a red flag indicating how thick the perception of industry standard is in your company. Identify these individuals as you will need to address them (calm their fears) to be able to initiate the exploration of these boundaries. 

Artificial boundaries are implemented within the corporation by organizational structures and their associated IT systems. The tighter the systems are to the organizational structures and the more the data/information is tied to the detailed process will increase the pressure not to change.

Be prepared for these roadblocks. Acknowledge you are challenging the current boundaries. Acknowledge the risk. Acknowledge the challenges inherint in the current organizational structure and the supporting systems. Then, explain how where you want to explore can leverage what you already have in place. Address these risks in your research before you explain the opportunity to the masses.

Ieri am inceput sa ma uit la un nou serial pe net, si anume la “The Big Bang theory”. Am vazut o secventa pe youtube si mi-a placut. Deocamdata nu am urmarit decat primul episod, dar din cate mi-am dat seama, actiunea se invarte in jurul a 4 tocilari care incearca sa isi faca prieteni. Nu are nici o (nicio parca e acum conform DOOM, dar mi se pare aiurea ca e articol nehotarat “O”) legatura cu teoria propriu-zisa. Foarte haios. Cei 4 gasesc tot felul de metode si incearca sa dea explicatii rationale (si putin cam ridicole) necunoscutului sau cauta diferiti algoritmi pentru a-si face prieteni si pentru a o agata pe vecina din apartamentul de alaturi .

PS: Imi place foarte mult pentru ca am de la fiecare cate un defect… )

But seriously, i want to talk about my recent attendance at Barcamp SG ‘09. Barcamp is basically a gathering of people involved, interested in and earn money from social media. We have bloggers, film critics, geeks, students (like me), and the list goes on, and on, and on. The programme of the day revolved around a voting process where participants vote for topics to be discussed and presented.

I hate long posts (and so do you). In light of that, I will only talk about one single topic that I identified with. This topic below relates to me, you and brains.

“How to explain difficult concepts to lesser beings (for smart geeks)” by @coleman (you can find him on twitter)

Tip#1:  Watch the curse of knowledge – I guess many of us are cursed by the knowledge we have. This knowledge then causes us to speak in a language that people lacking that particular knowledge do not understand. So yes, cut down on technical jargon – speaking in shakspearen english to an ah ‘beng’ just doesn’t cut it. Anymore.

Tip#2: Use analogies. There, I just proved my first point.

Tip#3: Oversimplify first. By oversimplifying an idea, it would be easier for the person to grasp. Something like an appetizer (man, i love analogies). It is only ethical to force-feed someone only if you have whet his/her appetite, makes sense?

At the end of the day, my point is this – technology is unleashing all our inner geeks. If we don’t look back and start breaking down what we know into edible pieces, we are going to die with that very knowledge. By learning ‘how to explain difficult concepts to lesser beings’, we benefit both ourselves and also the learner. Only speak html to someone who understands HTML, if he/she doesn’t, then use the three steps above

I’ve finally submitted my third article at Alltern8 about LARPing and Dating. It’s a constant thing to hear people mention how they can never meet a significant other during a LARP. While I’ve seen it happen countless times! To open some eyes about scoring a date at a LARP I’ve written:

LARPing and Dating… Not a Myth

LARPing is a social event. I know! Can you believe it? Being a social event there tends to be some social interaction between people. Usually awkward, not looking in each other’s eyes, shifting your weight from feet to feet, and you can’t remember what you talked about after you walk away. Did I even introduce myself? What class is she?
Yup, that about covers a conversation between two people that are use to interacting with a screen between themselves and humanity. But you are subjecting yourself to actual social event outside of your basement so that alone is something to be proud of.
Most players when they think about the stress of carrying on a conversation do not even think of forming a relationship with someone unless they can call to trade Magic cards. Furthest from their mind is starting a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship.
And yet when guys gather around to plan an outing to the local LARP just the mention of lady LARPers have them cheering each other on, slapping each others back and drawing up intensive plans of who is wingman. But they are usually the first ones to mumble a hello and hightail it out of there to the first girl LARPer they come in contact with.
There are many girls out there that have the same reaction! We plan on meeting a lot of guys but it becomes overwhelming when we finally arrive to the camp. If you don’t have the confidence of a movie star the reactions you receive are intimidating enough to send anyone running for cover. And if you have the confidence to actually receive and handle the attention accordingly you become ‘untouchable’ by the guys who are nervous around confident girls and the stuck up princess to the rest.

I have been thinking about food a lot lately, mainly because I haven’t went out to eat in months.  The recently opened a Sonic in Michigan, and all I keep reading about on Facebook is how some of my friends are going there.  I’m dying for a good burger and I am going through major burger withdrawal.  Burgers are a way of American life, and I love and worship them so much that I even have a key cap of a cheeseburger on my house key.  I came across this lovely picture of a cheeseburger from my trip to California a few years ago.  My very favorite burger place, In-N-Out Burger just happens to be about 2,500 miles away from my house, so there is no guarantee that I’ll be able to ever eat one again.  The last time I had one was in Vegas in 2003, and I’ve been thinking about having another one ever since. 

Just look at how damn yummy this burger looks.  You can almost taste it, can’t you?

If you could eat a burger right now, where would you go to get one?  I’d fly to Vegas to get this Double-Double, and die a happy woman.

Today has been a morning of very .. confusing events, and with a certain degree of weirdness.   Last night I went to bed, tossing and turning over things with Chaos.  While my consciousness  is slowly weeding him out, my subconscious keeps dragging him back into my mind and making it harder.  I don’t know -why- I like him, -why- I want him, -why- I can’t get him out of my mind.   All I know is that I’ve reached the point where I know I need to have ‘the talk’, and it shall be had one way or another.

So I woke up and sent him a message on Faboo asking if I could pop by after work to get some tv shows off of him.  Which I actually do need to do between (a) visiting the parentals this weekend, and (b) visiting a friend next weekend.  I  need entertainment!  And for this I really  need to get some downloads off of him.  So I figured the situation would be win-win, being that I could get the episodes off of him and try and have ‘the talk’ at once.  Unfortunately he’s busy, so that’s not going to happen this week.  He did offer for me to stop by during the week before work, so maybe I’ll go that route.  Unlikely to have ‘the talk’ then though, just snatch the files and run.  Zoom!

Ironically when I opened up my email there was a message from my buddy, and one from Chaos.  So I went onto Faboo to answer S’ message and I forgot that I was logged into chat.  A guy that I went to highschool with started messaging me — we haven’t talked since the summer when we tried to meet up for a date, but nothing ever panned out.  Which was kind of good, because I really didn’t want to go on the date with him, but was willing to do so in order to prove to him that we are incompatible.

After some dialogue he ends up asking me out … again.  It made me laugh .. loudly.   I ended up being non-committal about the whole process since he kept pestering me to go out again.  In fact he said it’d be nice if we could hook up a few times over the holidays.  I told him we’d see what happens.  And at the same time as trying to ease out of a date with this guy I was replying to S’ message, and buying a plane ticket to visit another guy.  The whole situation was just very weird and complicated.

But yay for vacations to visit boys who are non-complicated!  My friend is freshingly honest about his intentions, something I have never EVER experienced with Chaos.  So yeah, fun!  I haven’t committed to anything there, but I plan to just let things go and play it by ear.  The whole idea of curling up on a couch with an Evangelion marathon with a guy does sound kind of nice to me though.

Information Technologists are quick to provide technical advice.

• The best phone
• The best methodology
• The best software

“The Best” is really only an opinion. An opinion based on a limited set of facts and a limited set of circumstances and a limited set of experiences. Yet, technologists tend to express “The Best” as the one and only option. The only option that should be considered. The only option that will work for ANYONE (in his or her humble opinion).

This is a very narrow view and can create more obstacles for anyone in the future. Why? Because you don’t have all the information. The Best is what worked for you and may not be the best solution for the person asking for advice. If it works out, great, you are considered a valuable source. If it doesn’t, well…that affects your credibility and destroys a link to not only the person you gave advice but to all those he or she talks to about the bad advice.

As I mentioned in the previous post, Harvard  Business Review had a quick article last month titled Approach Avoidance (Don Moyer). You can destroy your networking opportunities by giving bad (any advice that didn’t work for the person acting on it) advice or by not giving any advice at all. In both cases, you are not adding VALUE to the other person.

In the case we are discussing here, the problem with giving advice that turns bad is the advice YOU are giving is focused on YOU and not the other person. What you consider “The Best” may not be right for the other person.

Before giving advice, ask questions that will lead you to understanding his or her situation. If you still feel your recommendation is right, phrase it with a caveat: “This worked for my circumstances. It might work for you if you do a little more research on …” This approach acknowledges that no circumstance is exactly the same. You are acknowledging that you respect that his or her circumstances are different and many solutions exist. You are showing that you are thinking in terms of HIM or HER and not YOU. Now, you become a valuable connection.
