POP PROPHECY is watching the heavens.

The Moon entered the sign of Aquarius on November 21st, 11:03PM EST.

space

Moon in Aquarius , November 21-November 24th, 2009

space

Her short stay of 3 days will be beneficial. This period starts out as a great time for responsibility, particularly in relationships. This is a great time to emphasize emotional detachment where needed, so don’t be surprised if you need “space” more than usual.

This is a splendid time for communications, you may be on Twitter, Facebook, Myspace or texting more than usual!

Now is also a great time to think of radical changes for our lives, though we don’t see many having the “will power” to start right away! Let that idea marinate for a while.

Around November 23rd, we must restrain ourselves from lashing or “acting” out, tempers may flare; don’t be a drama queen.

Friction may happen with women and our significant others, or relationships in general; it is possible that we fall back into the patterns of the past. We also see this as a time of good fortune and higher thinking of our relationships, however, so count the silver linings.

On the 24th, it is possible we become too idealistic, so be careful of disillusionment! Make sure you are opening your eyes wide to the truth.

Enjoy Moon in Aquarius!

By Amy Simom On October 26th and 27th (Hilary Clinton’s Birthday) Maria Shriver’s Sixth Annual Women

By Amy Simom

On October 26th and 27th (Hilary Clinton’s Birthday) Maria Shriver’s Sixth Annual Women’s Conference (which sold out in a record-breaking two days!) took place at The Long Beach Convention Center. In a nutshell – and according to their website - womensconference.org – “The mission of The Women’s Conference is to inspire, empower and educate women to be Architects of Change in their own lives and in the lives of others.”

The theme this year: Be Who YOU Are – An Architect of Change And Pass It On.

The conference coincides with A Woman’s Nation (http://awomansnation.com/) and The Shriver Report, A Study By Maria Shriver And The Center For American Progress that addresses the new fact that half of American workers are now female.

I could not attend so I sat in my home office from 8AM until 3PM absolutely glued to their website which streamed a live webcast of the day’s events. It was also streaming live on The White House website! Yay!!!!!!!

If I had been there, I would have needed a seat belt.

I was, and am, completely and utterly, inspired, motivated, empowered and as Eve Ensler – one of the speaker/performer’s proclaimed “I LOVE LOVE LOVE BEING A GIRL!”

Here are some highlights:

The conference began in a big beautiful ballroom type of setting with attendees sitting at tables. It looked and sounded just like The Academy Awards, dramatic and exciting. The lights dimmed and a woman’s voice boomed out “Ladies and Gentleman! Live! From Long Beach California! Welcome to the Women’s Conference 2009!”

Young, beautiful and talented Los Angeles Opera Singer Angel Blue (yes that is her name) was introduced to sing Frances Scott Key’s The Star Spangled Banner. As she sang I couldn’t help think of Julia Ward Howe’s Battle Hymn Of The Republic – you know it…”mine eyes have seen the glory….”. Both are Civil War songs and I was reminded again of how little we are taught and know about our women’s history. I am determined to change that. Julia Ward Howe (1819-1910), trailblazing mom, was the very first woman elected in 1908 to the American Academy of Arts and Letters and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.

Broadcast newswoman and journalist Paula Zahn was the day’s MC. She looks and sounds JUST LIKE Jane Fonda did years ago! Freaky. She set the tone talking about how we all want to live more meaningful lives, yet we are trying to live up to our self-imposed unrealistic expectations and how we are exhausted and overwhelmed and need to come together, to be part of a community. Then came the stats; seventy five percent of all women – and men – are feeling stressed out. No kidding. Half of all workers in America are females and two thirds are moms that are either the primary or co-breadwinners in their homes.

This is the big news. “We are responsible for so much. Yet”, she goes on to say, “women are still afraid to ask their employers for time off to care for their children or their parents.” No mention of the seventy eight cents to the man’s dollar that women earn or the very real maternal profiling that prevents women from either getting hired or rocking the boat once employed. But these were just the opening remarks and I am happy to report that minimum wage worker’s issues were addressed later in an amazing panel that included Madeline Albright, Claire Shipman, Amy Holmes and Valerie Jarrett hosted by David Gregory. More on that panel later.

Zahn spoke of her own life – juggling motherhood with career and the guilt she – and so many women feel always. “Guilt is corrosive and unproductive”. Yes. Zahn now has two shows on the Discovery Channel – and after thirty years, she is her own boss and finally she controls her life.” Zahn asked us to take an inventory of our lives, to be kind to ourselves, to ask for help, and not be martyrs. The key phrase was “Live It, Feel It, Pass It On”. There was definitely a pep rally feel and I loved it!

Next up – Laree Renda, Executive VP of Safeway Inc. who introduced Geena Davis. Remember she played a president on television? Well, she spoke about her organization called SeeJane.org http://www.thegeenadavisinstitute.org/ which is all about gender in media and advancing leadership for women and girls. She talked about how underrepresented we are in Government – only two women out of nine on the Supreme Court- – women are only 20% of congress so I of course immediately thought – again – what a great opportunity to bring up some original architects of change – the female trailblazers in government – Victoria Woodhull – first woman to run for president, Elizabeth Cady Stanton who nominated herself to Congress – the first female nomination (she only got twelve votes), Jeanette Rankin – the first gal elected to The House of Representatives – Margaret Chase Smith – first female in the House and the Senate – oh don’t get me started – but I digress. Geena Davis had plenty to talk about – specifically – her study on G rated media targeting girls eleven years of age and under. Her findings: kids media is the WORST – three males for every female character and girls are portrayed as peripheral, undervalued, hyper sexualized.

I loved her presentation – factual and sobering and gently and effectively told using comedy when there is NOTHING funny about this subject.

Robin Roberts, Co-Anchor of Good Morning America hosted the next panel entitled Tough Leadership Decisions in Tough Times. The panel consisted of Sheila C. Bair who was introduced as the ChairMAN of the FDIC. Made me laugh of course – ChairMAN – and SIR Richard Branson – of The Virgin Group and The Terminator himself Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (whose wife for the un-informed is Maria Shriver). First question posed to the group – to whom do you turn for advice? Arnold said Maria and got a big laugh. Branson discussed his new book “Screw It Just Do It” and advised not to take no for an answer.

Bair talked about courage and how she took a foreclosure workshop and worked on the mortgage restructuring and foreclosure crisis in California. The Governor then talked about California economics and taxes and gave his wife Maria some really beautiful props talking about she changed his way of thinking – praising her determination and calling her “The Determinator”. More laughs. Branson told a story about giving a speech in Saudi Arabia – I loved this – to ten thousand men, and right before he was to deliver the speech, he was told that the women were back in the corner behind a screen – as is the custom. So Branson is introduced and comes out and says “I believe when in Rome…. but here you men have taken all the best seats and put the women in the corner”.

He said the men were “deathly silent” but he could hear and see the women screaming from behind the curtain and throwing things in the air. I loved that story. Then he spoke about a law in Norway mandating that fifty percent of company board members are required now by law to be women. This inspired a whole discussion and Sheila Bair’s comment “I am conflicted – I want women to earn it and not be given the jobs and I think fifty percent is a low estimate” resulted in major applause and a conversation ensued about quotas and mandates.

Branson said men running companies (and most companies are run by men) need to change their mindset to incorporate more flex time and flex hours.

Arnold discussed diversification in the workplace and bragged about the many women on his staff in positions of leadership and power – not because they are women but because they were the right person for the job and I think that’s great but the reality was not addressed. Momsrising.org has all the sad statistics about maternal profiling – I wanted to hear that phrase maternal profiling and I did not.

Roberts asked them – as philanthropists, successful business people and entrepreneurs - for practical advice for us, about how to be successful. Sheila Bair talked about being yourself and using your gifts. Branson’s advice: “if you’re running a company – make it fun – have a laugh”. Arnold said “Be willing to fail” and brought up a bunch of his movies that bombed – like Jingle All The Way – and got a lot of laughs but then I was pleased to hear him give specific practical advice which he did discussing how Green Technology is booming in California and there is money to made there. He also talked about being courageous. Branson told another story about giving seed money to a woman in a third world country – can’t remember which one – and how he loaned her $300 for a sewing machine to start a business. She succeeded and paid him back and hired other women. It was a very inspirational story.

The issues of self-worth and self-esteem came up next with the awesome Cheryl Saban who is the author and founder of The Women’s Self-Worth Foundation Cheryl Saban, Author and Founder, The Women’s Self Worth Foundation who came on to speak and introduce Eve Ensler. I loved how she spoke about our cultural mores and how they shape us. Again, it brought to my mind Elizabeth Cady Stanton. She spoke and wrote about the same issues over a hundred and fifty years ago and I wish SOMEONE would bring up her groundbreaking The Women’s Bible, in which Stanton accuses religion of keeping women down and describes the Bible as an historical rather than sacred document. Talk about courage….

And then came Even Ensler, playwright (The Vagina Monologues), and V-Day Founder Eve Ensler, Playwright, Performer, V-Day Founder who BLEW THE ROOM AWAY!!!!! “These are dangerous times…” she said and went on: “We are on the precipice, we need to feed the earth, liberate girls and women”. She has spent the last twelve years covering the planet and has seen it all. She talked about pleasing – how we like to please – “the act of pleasing makes everything murky – OK - rather than real”. The audience really responded to that. “Here are some new verbs” she said; “provoke, question, challenge, dare, engage” and I of course immediately think about my gals – Woodhull, Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Lucretia Mott, Frances Wright (trailblazing reformer and first woman in America to speak in public that no one ever heard of), Eleanor Roosevelt – all called the most dangerous women in America.

They all did provoke, question, challenge, dare, engage and suffered so much – public abuse – familial rejection – all of it. These courageous trailblazing women lived exactly the way Eve Ensler was describing. She has a new book called I Am An Emotional Creature, The Secret Life Of Girls Around The World and went on to say how she had witnessed terrible realities – rape, mutilation, date rapes – and once again came the statistics; one out of three of our American female soldiers are raped – staggering statistics.

She then told an amazing story of a fourteen year old Kenyan girl who knew her sister was mutilated (female circumcision), and knew she would be next and overheard her father discussing with her future husband how she was going to be sold for a cow. So she ran away. She walked for two days to a safe house that Eve Ensler’s organization had established and Eve Ensler went with this girl back to her home for a reconciliation and witnessed how, as she said “this fourteen year old girl walked in to that house and was ‘so fierce’ and got her father to change and her family cried and the father promised he would not cut her or her sisters. Talk about empowerment…..

Ensler’s message; take charge, be braver, be bolder, stand up, resist, along with the message to honor yourself, your femaleness. She had all these fabulous lines like “terrorists are made, not born” and “one kiss can change your decision making process”…and “you don’t tell the Atlantic Ocean how to behave”.

Then she performed. A new piece. From her book I Am An Emotional Creature, The Secret Life Of Girls Around The World. She stepped out from behind the podium and the light changed – it was theatrical which I love – and the audience just ate her up. She ended by proclaiming - at the top of her voice – so so so passionate “I LOVE LOVE LOVE BEING A GIRL!!! She absolutely brought the house down!!!!!

A very emotional and heartbreaking speaker came on next. SOMALY MAM Somaly Mam, Founder, AFESIP, President, The Somaly Mam Foundation a survivor of Cambodian brothels.

Her life’s work is helping victims – teenage girls who have been forced into prostitution. Married with three children, her story was heartbreaking, saying in her halting broken English, “I need mother…no one loved me.” What a brave and beautiful woman who left with the message “don’t be scared to help the people”.

Katie Couric interviewed Annie Liebowitz – Annie Leibovitz, Photographer the famed Vanity Fair photojournalist, known for her celebrity photographs. Katie looked great in a red dress and red heels. They are friends as Annie had photographed Katie years ago. So the first thing Katie addressed was Liebowitz’s financial woes. She is being sued for hundreds of thousands of dollars and as Vanity Fair’s editor Graydon Carter said “The mind that can take these extraordinary pictures is not necessarily the same mind that is a perfect money manager.”

Liebowitz could not discuss any specifics due to an ongoing legal battle but I loved this because she answered that she, like many women, did not pay attention to her finances. She just focused on her work and as she put it “left it in other’s hands”. How many of us can relate? It was a fabulous interview. Liebowitz, who is the mother of three, is very entertaining, very interesting and is a great storyteller – very human, very personal. Her photos were put up on a big screen and she discussed them. There were many of celebrities and many of death from her controversial book “A Photographer’s Life” – including photos of her father (whose death she said was ‘a good death as he died at home, in his bed’ but I had to look way – it was too painful for me.

Her dad would have been horrified, she said if he were alive to know of her current financial situation as he was always worried about her. She also had photographed her partner, author and activist Susan Sontag. She was very honest discussing her photos. There were photos (and stories) of Queen Elizabeth, and politicians; Jimmy Carter, Clinton, Gore, Ann Richards, Barbara Jordan, Madeline Albright (who was on a later panel), Sandra Day O’Connor – the first woman elected to the Supreme Court and Ruth Ginsberg – the second woman elected to The Supreme Court and Katie mentioned Sotomayor who Liebowitz had not photographed – yet. Beautiful photos of the Kennedy’s and Hillary of course, and Colin Powell and The Obamas. Katie tried to get her to gossip but she wouldn’t, saying ”I still have years ahead of me to work”. The last photo we saw was of Maria and Arnold.

The next panel was fantastic! How A Woman’s Nation Changes Everything hosted by Meet The Press Moderator David Gregory. Loved the panel which consisted of the First Female Secretary of State Madeline Albright, (mother and grandmother), single mom Valerie Jarrett, Obama’s Senior Advisor, Claire Shipman, ABC’s Senior Correspondent Good Morning America and co-author of Womenomics and Amy Holmes, conservative political analyst and the only unmarried non-mother panelist.

An unbelievable clip was shown from a 1972 Meet the Press with moderator Lawrence Spivak asking Gloria Steinem the most ridiculous questions about women’s roles in response to her statement about women not being taken seriously, being undervalued, ridiculed, ignored by society, etcetera. So Spivak makes the statement that white men are virtually controlled by women from birth through puberty and beyond that. “Why hadn’t you done a better job, if you’re as smart as you say you are “? So now you can hear the audience of the conference laughing in disbelief in the background watching this clip and Steinem responds by saying “well that is your statement, not mine that women are virtually controlled by men” and goes on spelling out for the poor guy how “she has no real power over her life outside of her home, no power over the politics or economics of her life so I wouldn’t accept the premise of that statement”.

Then Spivak asks her “Can’t she brainwash the male? Why doesn’t she do it?” More laughter in the background and again Steinem explains to the poor guy how it’s not about brainwashing but changing – “eliminating the sex and race stereotypes of how women are taught and trained to invest their hopes and dreams in their male children and how their female children are not expected to meet those expectations and so on”. She was and always is so articulate and intelligent and poised. I love her so much. Don’t we all?

After the clip, Gregory asks Albright what has changed and would that question be asked today and she says “well I think it has finally been recognized that more than half the population is made up of women” and goes on commenting about the status of women and how women should be politically and economically empowered”. These were Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s exact sentiments at the very first Women’s Conference at Seneca Falls in 1848!!! Albright then went on to say “And if that question were to be asked today I think the answer would begin with the letter F.” Lotsa laughter and applause then.

Albright was brilliant, citing her own trailblazing journey as a journalist, always taking a backseat to her husband and later brought up how much she was criticized – by OTHER MOTHERS for being ambitious and opened up the whole ridiculous mommy wars issue. I loved it when she said “there is a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other”. Major applause there too. She spoke about how when she graduated Wellesley in 1959, they were told it was their responsibility to raise smart children (not to pursue a career or use their education). She went on discussing how business needs to offer daycare etcetera – and hey! My gals ALL said the same thing – Stanton, Frances Wright – Victoria Woodhull – gosh we are still talking about the same issues!!! It was a terrific panel addressing infrastructure and support systems and of course balancing motherhood with career, which is what I think a lot of the conference was about. I loved how Shipman said she sees a “feminization of values”. The takeaway was “choice” and partnership”.

First Lady Maria Shriver introduces a Once-in-a-Lifetime Conversation: Grief, Healing and Resilience

Finally, the last session of the day was Once-in-a-Lifetime Conversation: Grief, Healing and Resilience with opening remarks by Katie Couric followed by Maria Shriver who then hosted the panel with Susan St. James, who lost her son five years ago; Elizabeth Edwards who lost HER son thirteen years ago and Lisa Niemi, Patrick Swayze’s wife who stepped in for Kelly Preston whose recent loss of her son Jett proved to difficult for her to attend.

I had planned to be at The Conference. LA Parent Magazine asked me to blog for them as did Air America’s Nicole Sandler, my friend, a single working motherless mom who at the tender age of nineteen lost her own mother thirty Octobers ago. There are so many of us that needed this panel. I did not attend because I just lost my mother on October 18th.

Couric talked about her life and loss of her husband and sister. Then Shriver spoke so movingly and emotionally, and honestly about her mother’s (Eunice Shriver passed on August 15th) death and the death of her Uncle (Ted Kennedy) who died a few weeks later. It was very personal.

When all the women came together it was so very powerful, and healing, and helpful and resonated so much with everyone. Loss is sadly, so universal.

A recurring theme of the conference was about being your own advocate (Amy Holmes’ line) and listening to your own voice. I grew up hearing my mother say “you can be anything you want, just be the best you can be at whatever you choose”. I remember my Aunt Pearl, my mother’s older sister – a thoroughly modern woman, telling me about my mom. She said, “she would have made a great man”.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

This Margaret Mead quote was spoken a few times during the conference. How appropriate.

I wish this conference could have streamed live on monitors placed in every Girls Room and Ladies Room in America but it was only available to watch on a computer. The good news…you can still see it. Just click here http://www.californiawomen.org/.

So yes. I feel empowered, inspired, comforted, supported and excited. About being a woman. In this, a woman’s nation. Great job Maria. All the gals would be proud of you. From Mary Wollstonecraft to Anne Hutchinson, to Frances Wright to Elizabeth Cady Stanton to Victoria Woodhull to all the Margarets; Fuller, Sanger, Meade, Mitchell, Chase, to Eleanor Roosevelt. But let’s not kid ourselves. We HAVE come a long way baby and we have a long way yet to go.

But – as Claire Shipman so aptly put it, with “a feminization of values” coming, I am hopeful we will get there.

It’s that classic tale of boy meets girl, unless you count the girl being a crack science repo

It’s that classic tale of boy meets girl, unless you count the girl being a crack science reporter and the boy being a semi-mad genius obsessed with teleportation.

Seth Brundle is a researcher working on how to make teleportation work. Veronica Quaife scents a story in Seth Brundle; she follows him back to his lab and he shows her these nifty two telepods he’s been working on. After some arguing, the two agree that Veronica can hang around and cover one of the greatest scientific achievements ever. It soon becomes more than that, though, and Seth and Veronica’s communication problems soon cause Seth to get drunk and make a very, very bad decision.

I’d say that accidentally teleporting yourself with a common housefly is a very large problem, especially when you combine with the fly at a molecular level with a human to create Brundlefly. Ick.

David Cronenberg remade the fly from a hokey ’50’s sci-fi flick (come on, the scientist’s head was practically pasted onto a fly’s body) into a much more modern retelling of the horrors that can be achieved through science and arguably what it means to be human. While it’s gory, sure, Cronenberg never uses violence for violence’s sake (Rob Zombie, we’ll get to you later); instead, he uses it when necessary. … And let’s face it, Goldblum’s transformation into the fully realized Brundlefly, with his half-fly, half-human body and all the changes he has to make to get there, is going to be gory no matter what

Creepiest moment: Has got to be, hands down, Brundle’s collection of body parts that have fallen off which he stores in his medicine cabinet. Yuck. Either that or Goldblum’s semi-deranged rant about taking a dip in the plasma pool.

Scariest moment: I can never, ever, ever hear about someone having a baby without picturing Geena Davis giving birth to a glo-worm.

Imagine that thing, sans the cutesy face and nightcap. OH, THE HORROR OF IT ALL.

I love The Fly. It’s got a lot of moments of genuine horror and suspense, as well as one of the weirdest performances Goldblum has done. It’s definitely not one of the weirdest movies David Cronenberg has done (Oh! David, let’s be BFF just for The Brood!) but I think, one of the best. It’s a good fright flick that’s watchable just for the scares or if you want, for the ethical and moral questions it raises.

Snatch: 8/10

Köp: 49.-

Lock stock, and two smoking barrels

Lock Stock: 8/10

Köp: 59.-

Thelma & Louise

Well. The wind has begun to chill, the nights have become longer, and the trees have shed the last o

Well.

The wind has begun to chill, the nights have become longer, and the trees have shed the last of their leaves, leaving giant, immobile skeletons behind to tug at your hair and cast disarming shadows throughout the streets, keeping you looking over your shoulder at every wrong turn.

Halloween is nearly upon us.

A holiday based around candy (for the young set), drinking (for the rest of us), and terrifying your friends and neighbors (for everybody), is right up my alley.

To commemorate the upcoming October 31st, I present my top ten favorite horror-comedies, a genre that I am quite fond of. I disregard my usual list of seven because, let’s face it, these movies are too damn good. It was hard enough cutting it off at ten.

Horror and comedy, in my mind at least, go hand in hand. Laughing and screaming cannot be induced artificially. They are impulses that can only be brought on naturally and are thus infinitely more difficult to create.

And I’m not talking about “inadvertently funny” movies. Bad acting, poor special effects, or complete ineptitude of craft (you’ll find no Edward D. Wood here) are not taken into consideration. No, these are ten movies that are funny, and scary, by design, rather than by mistake.

They’ll chill your bones, but they may just warm your heart, too.

Right before ripping it out.

Here’s the first six:

Ten: The Frighteners. (1996)

As if traveling through time wasn’t enough, Michael J. Fox decides take on the supernatural as well – with living hobbit Peter Jackson, no less! Partially ignored upon it’s initial release, this remains a personal favorite of mine. Utilizing his ability to see ghosts, along with a trio of friendly ghosts who befriend him, Fox is able to convince people that their houses are haunted, and then get them to hire him to exorcise them – all for fun and profit. Things take a nasty turn for him when an evil spirit hits the scene, continuing a murder spree it had cultivated while still alive, and generally making his life miserable. Fox, as always, is great, but it’s horror icon Jeffrey Coombs who steals the show as creepy and over-the-top FBI agent Milton Dammers. Not a terribly frightening film by any means (despite it’s inexplicable R-rating), The Frighteners nevertheless remains a funny, weird, and mostly lighthearted film – that honestly needs to be seen by more people. Check it out!

Nine: Dead Alive (Brain Dead). (1992)

Peter Jackson returns to bring us one of the most ridiculous films I’ve ever seen, horror, comedy, or otherwise. Zombies, ass-kicking priests, mutant rat monkeys, and over 300 liters of fake blood collide, creating one of the goriest, most bizarre things I have ever witnessed.

A young man struggles to secure his true love while simultaneously covering up the fact that his rat-monkey infected zombie mother (huh?) has begun killing and infecting the rest of the town they inhabit. It all culminates in an over-the-top, splatterfest climax, that utilizes a lawnmower to it’s ultimate potential.

Strange, slap-sticky, and oddly charming, this movie is certainly a far cry from Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” work, and that’s just fine by me.

Eight: Beetlejuice. (1988)

Tim Burton can be hit or miss at times – mostly “miss” these days, it seems – but “Beetlejuice” is where it’s at. Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis play a recently deceased couple who return their dream house to find it “haunted” by stuck-up yuppies (who are very much alive), and desperately try to reclaim what is rightfully theirs – enter Beetlejuice. Despite only being on screen for a total of seventeen minutes, Michael Keaton’s extravagant “bio-exorcist” (he exorcises the living, you see) steals the show, bouyed by the forces of sheer originality as well as Keaton’s tour de force performance. It’s a wonderfully offbeat gem from Burton, and probably his most flat out fun movie to date.

Seven: Return of the Living Dead. (1985)

“Brains! Braaainssss!”

If you’re wondering where that off-repeated phrase first originated, wonder no more. While George A. Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead” may have created many of the zombie archetypes that we continue to live by to this day, Dan O’Bannon’s “Return of the Living Dead” took those tropes to town, spoofing them perfectly, while creating a few new ones of his own.

Like the whole “brains” thing.

The film is damn funny, fast paced, and features some truly amazing zombie makeup. The infamous “Tarman” a dripping, decomposing, skeletal apparation may well be the coolest and most original looking zombie ever put on film – both creatively and technically. And the zombies’ growing obsession with eating brains never gets old – and actually gets funnier and more outrageous as the film goes on.

Six: Re-Animator. (1985)

The great Jeffrey Coombs, who made an appearance earlier on this list in “The Frighteners”, returns – this time as Dr. Herbert West in Stuart Gordon’s take on H.P. Lovecraft’s “Re-Animator.” The movie is violent, gory, bizarre, and features equal doses of macabre and lowbrow humor – which alone earns it a spot on this list. But it’s Coombs who centers the film, playing the nerdy scientist bent on re-animating dead tissue. Part Frankenstein, part bizarre drug trip, and all awesome, “Re-Animator” is a film that you trully have to experience…and then wonder what the filmmakers were truly “experiencing” when the made it.

Five: Shaun of the Dead. (2004)

Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright bring us our fifth and final entry for today. “Shaun of the Dead” is a hybrid film – equal parts romantic comedy, horror, drama, and slapstick. It’s as funny as it is tragic, as tragic as it is gruesome, and as gruesome as it is British. And all of those elements add up to one of the most refreshing zombie films I’ve seen in years. Many consider “Shaun” to be a spoof of zombie films; but I disagree. It’s too detailed and original to be a spoof; rather, it’s simply a very unique and very British take on the genre, that allows the occasional (and subtle) reference to films and filmmakers that came before it, but never allows itself to degenerate into downright parody.

And, it also spawned the term “rom-zom-com”, as in “romantic zombie comedy.”

So I guess that’s something too.

Well.

That wraps up the initial six. Tomorrow I shall return with the final four, to round out this spook-tastic list.

And I’m sure you’ll all be happy to know that while I apparently consider “Young Guns” a classic Western, you won’t see “Lost Boys” anywhere near this list.

You’re welcome.

Jeffrey Lynn “Jeff” Goldblum (born October 22, 1952) is an American actor. Currently, he stars as Detective Zach Nichols on the USA Network’s crime drama series Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

In 1974, Goldblum appeared in Death Wish as Freak # 1. Later in his career, as “Lacey Party Guest” in Annie Hall (1977), Goldblum is seen saying into the telephone at a Hollywood party, “I forgot my mantra.” Goldblum has had leading roles in films such as The Fly, Independence Day, The Lost World (1997), Earth Girls Are Easy and The Tall Guy. Goldblum’s strong supporting roles include those in Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), The Big Chill (1983), Into the Night (1985), Jurassic Park (1993), and he also had strong supporting roles in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) and the cult films The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension (1984) and Igby Goes Down (2002).

For several years, Goldblum was the voice for most U.S. Apple commercials, including advertisements for the iMac and iBook. He also voices some U.S. Toyota commercials as well as Procter & Gamble’s facial cream line. He has recently appeared on Irish TV in commercials for the National Lottery.

Goldblum taught acting at Playhouse West in North Hollywood with Robert Carnegie. It was with several actors from this acting company that he improvised and directed the live action short film Little Surprises, which was nominated for an Academy Award in 1996.

Goldblum got the role of Adam in the upcoming film Adam Resurrected, a film adaptation of the Yoram Kaniuk novel. Jeff is a German entertainer who becomes the ringleader to a group of Holocaust survivors in an asylum after World War II.

In September 2006, it was announced that Goldblum was one of the founding members of a new theater company in New York called The Fire Dept. According to press materials, “The Fire Dept is made up of established and emerging writers, directors, actors and designers who have come together to create and produce work that cannot be replicated inside a television box or on a movie screen…The work of The Fire Dept combines the rigor and structure of great narrative storytelling with the vitality of formal experimentation to immerse audiences in a total experience that leaves them awake, alive and transformed.” The company will devote energy into developing new live theater works as well as interpreting old favorites.

His guest appearance was on Sesame Street in 1990 as Bob’s long-lost brother Minneapolis (parody of Indiana Jones) where Big Bird’s friend Snuffleupagus had “the golden cabbage of Snuffertiti” hidden in his cave. He has also appeared on Tom Goes to the Mayor, The Colbert Report, and Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job!.

Goldblum replaced Chris Noth as a Senior Detective on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. In the series, Goldblum plays the role of Detective Zach Nichols.

Trivia:

Is the voice behind the iMac/iBook commercials for Apple Computer.

After playing the victim of an alien invasion in the remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), he appears in two films in which he fights aliens: The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984) and Independence Day (1996). Also one where he plays an alien: Earth Girls Are Easy (1988).

Appeared opposite his then-girlfriend Geena Davis in The Fly (1986), and future girlfriend Laura Dern in Jurassic Park (1993). In both films, each actress’s character remarks that “Something went wrong.”.

In three films, Jeff Goldblum plays characters that have some sort of vomit-related sickness. In The Right Stuff (1983) he plays a NASA promoter who gets seasick. In The Fly (1986), Seth Brundle gets motion sickness which is why he invents teleporting. And in Independence Day (1996), David Levinson gets airsick. It’s unknown if Goldblum actually suffers from any of these.

The Fly 1986
Director: David Cronenberg
Writers: Charles Edward Pogue and David Cronenberg
Starring Jeff Goldblum, Geena Davis, John Getz, Joy Boushel, George Chuvalos and David Cronenberg

Very few remakes are able to surpass the original and Cronenberg’s the Fly is one of the few that is able to pull that feat off. It belongs in the same category as John Carpenter’s The Thing and Chuck Russell’s The Blob. Films that are vastly superior to the original material. What makes this film so much better too is how Cronenberg treats the material. Because his Fly is more than just a horror film, at it’s core it is a tragic love story in the vein of Romeo and Juliet. With fate and Mother Nature as the Montagues and the Capulets. This film also would work great as a 2 person play, but not as a opera as they tried to do awhile back and failed miserably. The film is really pulled off thanks to the great story, acting and some great effects that really pull everything together.
The plot basics are this, we meet Seth Brundle (Goldblum) who is at a part and meets a science magazine reporter, Veronica Quaife (Davis) and he strikes up a conversation with her and tells her about a teleportation device he is creating. He brings her back to his apartment and tests it for her and she is excited enough to write a piece about it. She brings it to her boss and ex lover, Stathis Boranis (Getz) and he tells her to go for it. Brundle comes to the office and begs her not to write it and he will give her exclusive rights to it. Due to the fact that it cannot teleport organic substances yet. She agrees and they fall in love and because he is too impatient he thinks he perfects it and transports himself, but unbeknownst to him a fly gets in the mix and is integrated with him. He feels revitalized but it soon becomes apparent that the fly is taking over and Victoria tries to talk sense into him but it is too late for that. He is devolving and he has grown fixated on her and he has plans for her, ones she wants no part of, but Seth will not take no for an answer.
This is a great film. Cronenberg’s direction is solid. He builds up the romance between the two leads quickly and makes it all the more tragic as the story takes it’s darker turns. He sets the stage well for ever scene, and my personal favorite is when Seth is in the bar drinking and he challenges one of the roughnecks to a arm wrestling match to woo his floozy off of him. It is a powerful scene that shows you how mad he is becoming. The script is great too, the two leads are very well structured as well as the character of Stathis, he at first plays out like the atypical jealous ex lover, but he really fleshes him out into a solid character. The cast is great as well, Goldblum and Davis have great chemistry and bring great depth to their characters. Getz is great also, he really solidifies the trinity of characters within this film. The SFX is amazing, Chris Walas, has some of the best creature FX I have seen in any film, and I still marvel at it every time I watch it. This is a defining film of modern horror and one of the true classics. Definitely seek it out if you haven’t witnessed this masterpiece.

Today I got to actually cook for money, which may be the world’s second oldest profession (invented six or seven minutes after the first). Each quarter, the hospital I work for takes on dietary interns (and their money-it costs the students a semester’s tuition) who are required to host a theme meal for the staff and (confused) visitors. Our current intern put on a fairly authentic Spanish banquet including a tapas bar. I made Serrano and Manchego cheese sandwiches on some kind of weird gordita rounds. There was no actual Serrano ham, but the chef got me some bastardized prosciutto. I flat-topped the suckers under the weight of a stack of two inch hotel pans. Most folks opted for cheeseburgers, but I got to at least improvise a little.

Yesterday, npr.org published a feature by Richard Weissbourd on the renewed call for fathers responsibility (“Dads, This Is Your Challenge To Step Up.”). This is the drumbeat held steady some time ago by candidate Obama and one that he has hammered at time and again as President. Weissbourd talks not only about Barack Obama’s call for men to be real, honest to goodness fathers to their children, but his own failings as a parent. He also addresses the thorny side of every dad’s experience-the lack of involvement by teachers and professionals, the deference to mothers. In a sense we are made less responsible fathers by virtue of being “just dad.”

I remember seeing an ad for Johnson’s Baby Shampoo shortly after my daughter was born. You know the famous, treacley tag line, “Having a Baby Changes Everything.” All I could say was “Man! You’ve got that right!” Early on in my child’s life I really had a hard time stepping up to be a good dad. My idea of fatherhood, formed in adolescence, was much different from actually having my own child in the world. As a teenager I knew exactly how my adult life would play out. I’d first marry Geena Davis and Winona Ryder. The legalities of polygamy could be dealt with later. Now, this isn’t to say that I’d live with them. No, I’d be living in my car, travelling the Great Plains, writing about mournful, disaffected cowboys. Lots of cigarettes, a typewriter on the front seat. Oh, sure, I’d roll into town and take care of the necessary nuptials with my wives, smelling of Brut for Men. Fatherhood was on my mind in the adolescent scenario that envisioned my adulthood. My children would be a well scrubbed, VonTrap passel of gifted little clones. They’d hang from the trees and sing to me as I drove into town (with my soon-to-be third wife, Kathy Ireland. I was an imaginative boy, to say the least).

To my great relief, there are no Hollywood starlets or good mannered Austrian children in my adulthood of the here and now. My lovely wife has the best of Winona and Geena, which is, of course, why I married her. I am a father trying to step up to the plate. I long to be involved in her life, with the help of school officials and the adults who push responsibility toward me. I never gave up road dreams, but I am more fulfilled by being a parent at home than I ever would have been as a Lucky smoking hack on the prairie. I have taken the call-to-arms as a parent seriously. What once seemed like mother’s work I now realize is my own. This weekend we’ll look at spelling tests and math problems together and I’ll pay attention to the details. You only get so many years of details as it is. Soon, heaven forbid, I’ll watch my own daughter drive off into the Western Sunset, and I’ll have to console her two husbands (Joe and Zac). With all the experience of a parenthood well spent, I’ll put a hand on their shoulders and tell the boys “She’ll be back. It gets mighty lonely out on the plains.”

I was mentally violated at MarkJ’s last night. Of course, camp and all as it is, we should have watc

I was mentally violated at MarkJ’s last night.

Of course, camp and all as it is, we should have watched The Long Kiss Goodnight. Geena Davis – despite that Mount Rushmore quality chin – maybe even BECAUSE OF that monumental mandible – was totally hot before she married Renee Harlin and became a sex slave instead of an international superstar.I’ve always loved that iconic scene where she’s strapped to the mill-wheel and, instead of just drowning her, the baddies dunk her a few times for laughs and to see what she looks like in a wet t-shirt, giving Charly the opportunity to escape her bonds and seize upon a submachine gun discarded on the bottom of the mill pond and blast their motherfucking heads off. God, get a load of the language out of me! It really IS true: movies breed violence.

MarkJ had prepared no shortlist, so I picked out some movies whose titles sounded optimistic, but they were lesbian flicks and MarkJ gave me a hard time, implying I was a lesbian. I have to say, he obviously had a disproportionately high number of lesbian flicks in his collection, so I’m not sure what that says about MarkJ except that maybe HE’S a lesbian.

Generally, a good romcom will do the trick for me – but that one, innocuous, often misapplied, little word ‘good’ disqualifies most contenders.

MarkJ suggested ‘He’s Just Not That Into You’, hastily qualifying this by saying he hadn’t watched it himself yet. The movie is based on the book of the same title, a self-help book whose premise can be condensed into one multiple choice question:

So, you meet a guy, and he says he’ll call, but he DOESN’T and then, when you ring HIM, you get his voicemail, so you drop by his house because you were just passing by ANYWAY, and he sets his dogs on you and later the police arrest you because of the restraining order – but dammit, how were you to know? – so does he:

a) like you

b) not like you

c) not sure

Personally, I learned that lesson at the age of sixteen (I have the teeth marks to prove it) and have no idea how they made a whole book out of the subject. But if you answered a) or c) you might want to pick up a copy.

Anyhoo, the movie is about a group of couples and one slapper, all of whom either break up and then get back together, or are together and then break up. It was somewhat lacking in dramatic tension although regrettably not cliches. Also, you could see the plot twists coming like giant, inflatable pretzels being towed behind a light aircraft.

The characters were pretty much uniformly one-dimensional and unlikeable, apart from Jennifer Aniston who couldn’t pull off unlikeable if she whined like Gwyneth Paltrow while torturing a puppy.

There’s Gigi, who does not appear to have any pride, which is just as well because she would routinely shove it up her bum. She calls guys, she leaves multiple insane voice messages, she stalks, she quizzes men on what they mean by ‘Nice to meet ya’, and she appears to have a worrying fetish for obscenely hirsute legs. (Note: this character is supposed to be a twenty something everywoman, rather than a thirteen year old with a crush on Robbie Williams.)

Gigi gives a tremulous, impassioned speech about how her actions may be so cringeworthy that I could only watch it through my fingers and MarkJ pulled his t-shirt over his face, but that at least she’s daring her heart and feeling something or . . . something. SHE IS TRYING TO MAKE A VIRTUE OUT OF STUPIDITY! It’s like trying to make a virtue out of . . . of . . . crack cocaine addiction, or the Atkins diet.

What else? Scarlett Johanssen stalks a married man, and then gets all upset when he bundles her into a cupboard half-naked when his wife calls to his office (I know, UNBELIEVABLY cliched) (this scene was also more cringe-worthy than a Fawlty Towers finale). I hate to think of a slut like Scarlett throwing herself at Husband. At least I know he would say: “Scarlett, I know you want me. That’s understandable. But step away from the lunchbox. I mean it. I am madly in love with my wife, and you have thick legs.”

Then we have The Wife, who was more concerned whether her husband was smoking on the sly than shagging some slut (see above). And then The Wife finds a packet of cigarettes wrapped in his gym towel – but I ask you: if someone is trying to cover up an illicit smoking habit, do they really HIDE packets of cigarettes? Surely they SMOKE THEM? I would have thought illicit smokers bought packs of twenty, went to a secluded spot, and inhaled the lot of them, one after another, in a furtive five minute session before burning any remaining evidence.

Well, that’s what I would do.

So, I don’t recomment He’s Just Not That Into You.

And don’t get me started on the other movie we watched.

Great evening though – thanks MarkJ

I was mentally violated at MarkJ’s last night.

Of course, camp and all as it is, we should have watched The Long Kiss Goodnight. Geena Davis – despite that Mount Rushmore quality chin – maybe even BECAUSE OF that monumental mandible – was totally hot before she married Renny Harlin and became a sex slave instead of an international superstar. I’ve always loved that iconic scene where Geena’s strapped to the mill-wheel and, instead of just drowning her, the baddies dunk her a few times for laughs and to see what she looks like in a wet t-shirt, giving her the opportunity to escape her bonds and seize upon a submachine gun discarded on the bottom of the mill pond and blast their motherfucking heads off.
MarkJ had prepared no movie shortlist, so I picked out some films whose titles sounded optimistic, but they were lesbian flicks and MarkJ gave me a hard time and implied I was a lesbian. I have to say, he had a disproportionately high number of lesbian flicks in his collection, so I’m not sure what that says about MarkJ except maybe HE’S a lesbian so there.

Generally, a good romcom will do the trick for me – but that one, innocuous, often misapplied, little word ‘good’ disqualifies most contenders.

There’s Gigi, who does not appear to have any pride, which is just as well because she would routinely shove it up her arse. Gigi stalks guys, she calls them, leaving multiple insane voice messages, she quizzes men on what they mean by ‘Nice to meet ya’, and she appears to have a fetish for obscenely hirsute blokes. (Note: this character is supposed to be a twenty something everywoman, rather than a thirteen year old with a crush on Robbie Williams.)

Gigi gives a tremulous, impassioned speech about how her actions may be so cringeworthy that I could only watch her through my fingers and MarkJ pulled his t-shirt over his face, but that at least she’s daring her heart and emotionally open or . . . something. SHE IS TRYING TO MAKE A VIRTUE OUT OF STUPIDITY! It’s like trying to make a virtue out of . . . of . . . crack cocaine addiction, or the Atkins diet.

What else? Scarlett Johansson stalks a married man, and then gets all pouty when he bundles her into a cupboard half-naked when his wife turns up unexpectedly at his office (cliched to the point of parody) (this scene was also more cringe-worthy than a Fawlty Towers finale). I hate to think of a slut like Scarlett throwing herself at Husband, but at least I know he would say: “Scarlett, I know you want me. That’s understandable. But step away from the lunchbox. I mean it. I am madly in love with my wife, and you have thick legs.”

Then we have The Wife, who was more concerned whether her husband was smoking on the sly than shagging some slut (see above). The Wife finds a packet of cigarettes wrapped in his gym towel – but I ask you: if someone is covering up an illicit smoking habit, do they really HIDE packets of cigarettes? Surely they SMOKE THEM? I would have thought illicit smokers buy packs of twenty, go to a secluded spot, and inhale the lot of them, one after another, in a furtive five minute session before burning any remaining evidence.

Well, that’s what I would do.

So, I don’t recommend it. Watch something else. Yoga and Meditation For Stress Relief, for example.

And don’t get me started on the other movie we watched.

Great evening though – thanks MarkJ

Sigourney Weaver (born October 8, 1949) is an American actress. She is best known for her roles as Lieutenant Ellen Ripley in the Alien film series and as Dana Barrett in the Ghostbusters movies. Weaver is also a three-time Academy Award nominee for her performances in Aliens, Gorillas in the Mist and Working Girl. She is still one of the very few actresses who has ever been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in a science fiction movie (Aliens).

Although Weaver has played a number of critically acclaimed roles in movies such as Gorillas in the Mist, The Ice Storm, Dave, and The Year of Living Dangerously, she is best known for her appearances as Warrant Officer/Lieutenant Ellen Ripley in the blockbuster Alien movie franchise. She first appeared as Ripley in Ridley Scott’s 1979 film Alien. She reprised the role in three sequels, Aliens, Alien 3, and Alien Resurrection. She was nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award for portraying Ripley in Aliens. She also starred in two films in 1988, receiving Academy Award nominations for her roles as Katherine Parker in Working Girl and as naturalist Dian Fossey in Gorillas in the Mist. She lost out to Geena Davis and Jodie Foster respectively, although she received Golden Globes for both roles.

Weaver also appeared in Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II as Dana Barrett. She played the role of agoraphobic criminal psychologist Helen Hudson in the 1995 movie Copycat, and went on to become one of the most highly paid actresses of the 1990s. In addition to her trademark role as Ripley, Weaver has recently concentrated on smaller roles such as 1999’s A Map of the World and 2006’s Snow Cake. She has also appeared in comedic roles, such as Jeffrey (1994), Galaxy Quest (1999), and Heartbreakers (2001), in which she starred with Jennifer Love Hewitt.

In 1997, Weaver won the BAFTA Award for her supporting role in Ang Lee’s The Ice Storm. In 2003, she was voted 20th in Channel 4’s countdown of the 100 greatest movie stars of all time. She was one of only two women in the top 20 (the other was Audrey Hepburn). That year, she also played The Warden in the movie Holes. In 2006, Weaver returned to Rwanda for the BBC special Gorillas Revisited.

Weaver was approached to star in The Accused but felt the nature of the story was too violent. She was considered for the role of Catherine Tramell in Basic Instinct, but Sharon Stone was cast instead. Bryan Singer originally wanted Weaver for the role of Emma Frost in X-Men: The Last Stand, but Singer (along with screenwriter Dan Harris, who had directed Weaver in Imaginary Heroes) left the project, and the idea to include Frost was dropped. In 2009, Weaver starred as Mary Griffith in her first made-for-TV movie, Prayers for Bobby, for which she was nominated for an Emmy Award. She also guest starred in the TV show Eli Stone in the fall of 2008.

Weaver also has done voice work in television and film. She had a guest role in the Futurama episode “Love and Rocket” in February 2002, playing the female Planet Express Ship. In 2006, she was the narrator for the American version of the Emmy Award-winning series Planet Earth. Also in 2006, Weaver narrated “A Matter of Degrees”. A short film that plays daily at The Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks (The Wild Center) in Tupper Lake, New York. In 2008, Weaver was featured as the voice of the ship’s computer in the Pixar and Disney release, WALL•E. She also voiced a narrating role in another computer-animated film, 2008’s The Tale of Despereaux, based on the novel by Kate DiCamillo. Weaver has also expressed interest in starring in a fifth Alien film. Pre-production details for the film are expected to start soon.

James Dean
(February 1931 – September 1955)

In “a fun experiment” by Irina Aleksander on her article “The New Male Beauty” (June 23, 2009) for The New York Observer. She suggested that the latest “It boys”sort of look alike– High School Musical’s Zac Efron, Twilight’s Robert Pattinson, Gossip Girl’s Chace Crawford, Star Trek’s Chris Pine, Hairspray’s James Marsden, Fantastic Four’s Chris Evans and the list goes on, and she calls it the NEW MALE BEAUTY: those wide-set eyes, the narrow nose that flares up at the tip just so, the childish puffy cheeks and the not-too-rugged jaw lines, topped with carefully placed strands of layered hair. (http://www.observer.com/2009/style/new-male-beauty)

Although I agree with her that this twenty-something James Dean doppelgänger’s has been dominating the box office and prime time tv this decade, whats new? Since James Dean starred in Rebel Without a Cause (1955), he’s reincarnation’s in the “Male Beauties” of the 60’s (Warren Beatty), 80’s (Tom Cruise), 90’s (Leonardo Dicaprio) has always been prominent. The 2000’s Young Hollywood cannot deny that “another swoopy-haired, pretty-faced actor dominating the box office” has started in the 50’s. Although I was born in the 80’s and Tom Cruise was the king, I acknowledge that on my list of top 10 Male beauties of all time, it’s a not a Mr. Pattinson or a Mr. Efron topping my list- its the original, Mr. Dean.

River Phoenix
(August 1970 – October 1993)

The American film actor who starred in Gus Van Sant’s 1991 Semi-documentary footage of Seattle street hustling “My Own Private Idaho” is one of the reason I fell in love with american filmmaking, not only its sexiest Homosexual road movie ever made, its casted perfectly with beautiful talented stars all at the top of their respective games. The film’s success solidified Phoenix’s image as an edgy actor with leading man potential, without even trying, he is the most authentic reincarnation of James Dean’s beauty and talent in the 90’s.

Brad Pitt
(December 1963)

Yes, it’s not a surprise Mr. Pitt’s in the list, hailed as one of the world’s most sexiest men over and over in some top 10 list all over the world. But I can’t help but put him in this one, because am only human. Most of my favorite movies of all time are starred by Brad Pitt, and three of the sexiest and most beautiful characters that the silver screen ever produced he had played – J.D., the cowboy hitchhiker who seduces Geena Davis’s character in the 1991 road movie “Thelma & Louise”, as Louis de Pointe du Lac in “Interview with the Vampire” (1994) – the most referenced vampire of this decades’ teen vampires and Tristan Ludlow in the 1994 drama “Legends of the Fall”, how can I resist?

Johnny Depp
(June 1963)

There is something so mysterious about this American actor that I find so mesmerizing and beautiful, after 50 films and running, from “A Nightmare on Elm Street” to “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” from “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” to “Pirates of the Caribbean”, he just makes me ask for more.

Joe Dallesandro
(December 1948)

Aesthetically speaking if the Greek philosophers will have a perfect mold for the male beauty, it will be “Little Joe”s face. Thanks to Andy Warhol, the 70’s underground films will always have their nude James Dean. Although he never become a mainstream film star like Mr. Dean, Mr. Phoenix, Mr. Depp and Mr. Pitt –Mr. Dallesandro is a sex symbol of the 20th century in his own right, and an iconic beauty on my list. Like Mr. Phoenix he starred as as a beautiful teenage street hustler in the 1970’s film Flesh and hailed as one of the 10 most beautiful men Scavullo had ever photographed. As a photographer how can i disagree?

Gabriel Aubry
(January 1976)

“Quick, name one male model.” asked by Lauren Streib on her article “The World’s Most Successful Male Models” (May, 07 2008) for Forbes Magazine. Gabriel Aubry, Mark Fisher, Marlon Teixeira, Jon Kortajarena, and Greg Knudson and yes, Fabio doesn’t count. In my personal list of Top 10 Male Beauties of all time, it only make sense that half of them are models and three out of five are signed with Wilhelmina Models in New York City. All five of them have the movie star good looks minus the Zoolander ego that plagued most male models this decade.

Signed to Wilhelmina Models in New York City, the only male model to ever appear on the cover of Uomo Vogue while appearing in 4 different campaigns at the same time, in the same magazine. Aubry is a Canadian male model, that has been the face (and body) of blue chip clients like Gianni Versace, Calvin Klein, DKNY, and Valentino, achieved supermodel status after modeling for Hugo Boss.

Mark Fisher
(January 1976)

One source of male beauties for me back in college are the men’s fashion magazines, I have converted my room in a mini-magazine library and nobody can avoid all the muses for more than four decades of the legendary photographer Bruce Weber, Mark Fisher is my favorite. Mr. Fisher is an American model best known for his campaigns for Abercrombie & Fitch, Polo, Versace and Ralph Lauren. In my book he is one of the original male models that carries the James Dean charm without even knowing it.
Fisher was born in Detroit, but grew up in Atlanta and considers himself a little boy from the South.

Marlon Teixeira
(September 1993)

Signed to Wilhelmina Models in New York City, Teixeira appeared on Dior Homme Campaign, the provocative Diesel Ad shot by Terry Richardson, the face of the 2009 Christian Dior Summer/Spring collection to name a few. The brazilian beauty is half Portuguese and has Indian and Japanese origins and at the very young age and early of his career he is becoming one of the top working male model now.

Jon Kortajarena
(May 1985)

Those chiseled cheekbones, full pout and sexy stare has placed Spanish male model on my top 10 male beauties, signed to Wilhelmina Models in New York City, Kortajarena has been the face of Just Cavalli, Tom Ford, Bally, Etro, Trussardi and now on his film debut on the upcoming directorial debut of designer TOM FORD “A Single Man” (2009) with Colin Firth, and Julianne Moore.

Greg Knudson
(November 1978)

Whenever people ask me who’s my favorite model I ever photographed, this American male model, native of california always come to mind, I never thought I’ll ever meet a real life James Dean in my lifetime, but I did, and his body covered by Oriental tattoos of his gang membership in his teen years, a troubled teen like the characters that James Dean, River Phoenix, Johnny Depp would usually play in their films and his striking resemblance to Brad Pitt is uncanny.

Excerpt from my book Acknowledgement “STARK”: I remember buying my first photo book, Just Between Us by LA photographer Greg Gorman, when I was in Fine Arts college majoring painting. I will never forget that, because I had never before spent so much money on a book; but that day and from this day on I knew it was all worth it. The moment I saw Greg Knudson on the book cover in the display, I considered him the most beautiful person on the planet, and I still feel he is.

When I shot him in LA last year—8 years after I bought the book—Greg told me I might be the last photographer he would ever work with since he is thinking of retiring; he has worked with most of the top photographers in the 1990’s. Now he is gracing my photo book, and I am elated.

Remakes are all the rage these days with all of the advances in visual effects these days so it’s not too much of a stretch to hear about a remake of a remake being remade by the director who did the remake of the original as well. Got all that? And one more for you to throw into the mix as well… Cronenbergs ‘VIDEODROME’ is also being remade – although not by him – as mentioned in a previous THRALL WORLD post. Read about that HERE.

David Cronenberg is again buzzing with “The Fly.”

The auteur is in talks to develop a reboot of the 1986 classic with Fox, the studio that released that film, writing and potentially directing the new pic.

The move marks an about-face for the Canadian director, who in the past has said he did not want to be involved on a remake of the film.

by Alex Billington – FirstShowing.net

Yep, you read that right. David Cronenberg is developing a reboot of his own 1986 sci-fi classic The Fly. Cronenberg’s film is already a remake of Kurt Neumann’s 1958 film of the same name as well. The story centers on an eccentric scientist named Seth Brundle (played by Jeff Goldblum) who, after an experiment with teleportation goes awry, is transformed into a fly. Geena Davis starred as Goldblum’s love interest, Veronica. Oddly, Cronenberg has said in the past that he did not want to be involved a remake, but now he’s just doing it on his own. I can’t wait for someone to talk with him to find out exactly why he’s coming back.

This is only in the early development stages (via Risky Biz), so we’re not sure when Cronenberg will get to this. A return to The Fly would also mark the latest in a mini-trend of directors remaking their own work. Michael Haneke last year remade his thriller Funny Games while Werner Herzog re-imagined his doc Little Dieter Learns to Fly with the 2006 feature Rescue Dawn. Cronenberg was attached to direct the Robert Ludlum adaptation The Matarese Circle but apparently ditched that to take on Cosmopolis instead.

E finalmente, minha trilogia favorita, Piratas do Caribe!
