Jina with her Thanksgiving turkey

On this cool autumn day before Thanksgiving, I can’t help but think about how giving thanks for all the wonderful blessings in our lives is universal.

It became so real to me when the heroine in my upcoming novel, The Blonde Samurai, is in 1874 Japan celebrating Thanksgiving with her samurai family.

Geisha (芸者 “person of the arts”) are traditional Japanese artist-entertainers. Geisha were very common in the 18th and 19th centuries, and still exist today, although their numbers are dwindling. Geisha is the most familiar term to English speakers, and the most commonly used within Japan as well, but in the Kansai region the terms geigi and, for apprentice geisha, “Maiko” have also been used since the Meiji Restoration. The term maiko is only used in Kyoto districts. The English pronunciation or the phrase “geisha girl,” common during the American occupation of Japan, carry connotations of prostitution, as some young women, desperate for money and calling themselves “geisha,” sold themselves to American troops.

The first geisha were all male; as women began to take the role they were known as onna geisha (女芸者), or “woman artist”. Geisha today are exclusively female, aside from the Taikomochi. Taikomochi are exceedingly rare. Only three are currently registered in Japan. They tend to be far more bawdy than geisha. Other public figures who contributed to the creation of the modern geisha were Oiran, or courtesans, and Odoriko, dancing girls. The Odoriko in particular influenced geisha to include dance as part of their artistic repertoire.

Geisha were traditionally trained from young childhood. Geisha houses often bought young girls from poor families, and took responsibility for raising and training them. During their childhood, apprentice geisha worked first as maids, then as assistants to the house’s senior geisha as part of their training and to contribute to the costs of their upkeep and education. This long-held tradition of training still exists in Japan, where a student lives at the home of a master of some art. This training often lasts for many years.

The course of study traditionally starts from a young age and encompasses a wide variety of arts, including Japanese musical instruments (particularly the shamisen) and traditional forms of singing, traditional dance, tea ceremony, flower arranging (ikebana), poetry and literature. By watching and assisting senior geisha, they became skilled in the complex traditions surrounding selecting, matching, and wearing precious kimono, and in various games and the art of conversation, and also in dealing with clients.

Once a woman became an apprentice geisha (a maiko) she would begin to accompany senior geisha to the tea houses, parties and banquets that constitute a geisha’s work environment. To some extent, this traditional method of training persists, though it is of necessity foreshortened. Modern geisha are no longer bought by or brought into geisha houses as children. Becoming a geisha is now entirely voluntary. Most geisha now begin their training in their late teens.

4.0 out of 5 stars A biased but interesting documentary

“The Secret Life of Geisha” is not going to surprise or amaze anyone who has done a bit of research on Geisha, say by reading Liza Dalby’s book “Geisha” or Mineko Iwasaki’s autobiography “Geisha : A Life.” However, to those uninitiated who still believe that Geisha are some sort of high-class prostitute, then perhaps a secret or two might be unveiled.

This DVD is a pretty standard A & E presentation, with interesting interviews and stimulating visual images. The approach seems to very much be “How Westerners approach Geisha” rather than “How Japanese approach Geisha,” as the majority of people interviewed seem to be Westerners such as Liza Dalby, Arthur Golden and western patrons of Geisha. Granted, Liza Dalby deserves to be interviewed on any such presentation, but it did come off a little bit too much like an add for Golden’s “Memoirs of a Geisha,” a book of dubious authenticity. Although he was used as a primary source, there was no mention of Mineko Iwasaki’s lawsuit against Golden for mis-representing her life story in his book.

The nicest thing about a video such as this, as opposed to a book, is the ability to see the costumes and beauty of Geisha in living color, moving around in kimono and dancing and playing their instruments. Geisha are very visual, and a video brings this out better than a book. Susan Sarandon’s narration was a bit distracting, and I would have preferred a Japanese narrator, as well as subtitling of the Geisha rather than over-dubbing.

Also missing from the video is that, in modern Japan, women also attend Geisha parties, with the staff of a school perhaps hiring a Geisha and a few Maiko to entertain both genders during a particularly special occasion. The only time I have been to a Geisha party has been mixed-gendered, and it is not unusual in modern Japan.

Still, with few videos of this sort around, for all it’s flaws “The Secret Life of Geisha” is worth watching by anyone who is interested in Geisha. Just don’t use it as your primary source of information regarding this fascinating world.

GEISHA OF JAPAN

The path was narrow and the streets quiet except for the  distant  sound of the shoes of the Geisha of Kyoto, Japan.  These are women who have made a profession of entertaining  with their conversation, songs and  musical instruments.   Many start from a very early age and make a career  business that sometimes, after years, results in becoming the owner of the okiya, or geisha house.  It appears that the term “geisha“, which means artist is different from the more specific term “geiko“, meaning woman of art.     They leave their families to train in a strict environment.   I learned these facts while traveling home from Japan recently and reading the book, Geisha of Gion written by one of the most famous geishas, Mineko Iwasaki,  who has left the profession and is now married with a family.  In Gion, one will find the true geiko, as we will call it throughout this writing.    A Meiko is an apprentice geiko or geisha.  The years of dedication  expected and the modern tourist industry has made a place for the not so trained or disciplined geikos  in other areas of Japan.  Most modern girls find the distractions of cellphones, the internet, and the fashion world a pull when considering this difficult and dedicated career. 

What type of dedication are we talking about?    Long hours of practice in music, song, dance,and speech are a must.    Think of it as a kind of boot camp.  The new geiko may have the job of cleaning the toilets or serving the other members of the household.   There is a certain amount of isolation from the family, friends or those thought to be inferior.

  I was interested in the part of  Mineko Iwasaki’s  book that told of her wanting to visit a young girl in her school.  This girl was blonde and was the child  of an American soldier and a Japanese mother, who came from the burakumin  people of Japan.  These people were considered a type of “untouchable” because they handled the dead people as well as meats and leathers.  They were the butchers, the undertakers, and shoemakers.  As time has passed, these people do not face as much discrimination, but mostly live in  ghetto type surroundings.   Of course Mineko  was never allowed to visit this family again.   

  What is expected of a geiko other than entertainment?   Previous years of their lives are completely spent in training.  As some westerners have thought, some geikos were  prostitutes; but this is not the case for the serious-minded geiko today. A virgin is looked  upon highly.  Her main duty is to give  men a heightened sense  of male ego. The geiko is taught to hang on every word of the client and to entice him into believing that he has gone to another place….outside the pressures of the real world.   It is to bring good conversation, drink, food and laughter to his life.   Mostly, by invitation only, the geiko meets with men  for a small dinner  or a banquet.     The geiko may sit with high level authorities, CEO’s of great companies, and with the famous.    They have learned a special type of allure and the ability to make the gentleman  feel happy… all in the name of art.  

After the war with Japan ended in 1945, the American Occupation Forces brought the geiko and their performances  back into being.   It is said the General MacArthur was so taken by the beautiful kimono and obi (the sash) that he ask the geiko to give him one.   However, she refused.  She told him  the kimono was her life and fortune.  He never asked again. 

Another ancient  form of entertainment in Japan is the Kabuki Theater.  It came into being around the sixteenth century for the common people.  Performed exclusively by men, some actors can trace their history in Kabuki Theater back ten generations.  It is a lively performance  with help of drums and singing that is different and sharp to the western ear.  Also the modern Kabuki Theater, which my husband and I attended, has mercy on the “seat” of the tourist.  They allow one to attend for only one hour instead of the three or four hours that Japanese find a pleasure.   Great showmanship with swords and the role of the drums as the Shogun enters carries the plot.   Even gently falling snow on the stage gives the audience the picture of a quiet, soft beauty of the Japanese winter.  

The traditions of Japan make it a unique place to visit.  The  authentic Geisha and The Kabuki in the traditional setting is found no where else in the world.

Une geisha plus souvent appelée geiko  à Kyōto, est au Japon une dame de compagnie raffinée réservée à une clientèle très aisée, dédiant sa vie à la pratique d’excellence des arts traditionnels japonais. Le mot « geisha » peut s’interpréter comme « personne d’arts » ou « femme qui excelle dans le métier de l’art ».

Ingin tahu bagaimana teknik para geisha melayani ‘pertempuran’ para Samurai? Ternyata para geisaha yang biasa berlutut ini memiliki teknik oral seks yang bisa membuat para Samurai era tahun 1900-an ‘bertekuk lutut’. Seperti apa?

Dalam buku The Japanese Art of Sex: How to Tease, Seduce & Pleasure the Samurai in Your Bedroom karya Jina Bacarr, disebutkan para geisha memiliki kekuatan pada mulut yang dalam bahasa Jepang disebut shita.

Pertama, para geisha akan memberikan layanan ‘mandi kucing’ kepada para lelaki. Tak akan ada satu inchi pun bagian tubuh yang akan terlewati dari jilatan sang geisha. Ia akan memulai jilatan dari dada hingga Mr Dick, hingga sang pria siap ‘beraksi’. Ia akan terus ‘menyerang’ lawan tempurnya hingga ia juga ikutan terangsang.

Kedua, para geisha akan memberikan hembusan hangat pada tubuh lelakinya, seperti hembusan hangat udara di sekitar sungai Kamo di Kyoto. Sensasi hangat ini bisa berasal dari air hangat atau lotion. Termasuk pula udara hangat yang berhembus dari bibirnya. Ia lalu akan berlutut di sekitar area genital pasangannya untuk memberikan sensasi hangat dan dingin ini.

Ketiga, sejumlah daerah yang memiliki rangsangan seksual tinggi akan mendapat perlakuan hati-hati para geisha. Seperti ketika ia menggigit kecil makanann yang diberikan kepadanya.

Para geisha juga biasa memberikan gigitan kecil pada Mr Dick, jari-jari tangan dan telinga. Namun ia tak akan membiarkan pasangannya mendapatkan orgasme saat bagian tubuh sang lelaki sedang berada dalam mulutnya.

Ia akan terus menerus memberikan rangsangan luar-dalam, dengan mengusapkan jari pada dada pasangan dengan gerakan memutar, memijat kedua ‘bola’ atau malah menyusupkan jarinya ke dalam anus.

Keempat, sang geisha akan bergerak naik-turun seperti putaran angin di atas tubuh pasangannya. Saat itu pula ia akan membuka mulutnya seperti bunga yang sedang merekah. Kepalanya lalu akan bergerak ke sisi kiri dan kanan tubuh pasangannya. Ketika bibirnya menyentuh Mr Dick, lidahnya akan membentuk pola pembuka tutup botol. Lalu ia memasukan seluruh batang Mr Dick ke dalam mulutnya dan membiarkannya beberapa detik.

Kelima, saat seluruh Mr Dick berada dalam mulutnya, ia akan memberikan sedikit getaran yang berasal dari tenggorokannya. Stimuli ekstra ini berlangsung sambil ia mengurut pangkal testis pasangannya.

Behövde något nytt… senaste dagarna har varit lite motiga och jobbiga. Valparna har behövt otroligt mycket vård och ändå så gav Clara upp i morse. Kvar är nu Cocktail och det ser faktiskt betydligt mer positivt ut för hans del

Han är inte ens större än min handflata men han växer varjefall. Fick låna en våg av djurkliniken som väger i ouncez (oz) men det visade sig att den var för stor så nu har vi gått över till våran våg som väger i gram. Igår morse vägde han 179 gram och i morse hade han gått upp till 200 gram . Han är lite hård i magen så man får vara väldigt noga med att man får honom att bajsa som han ska. Tyvärr märktes det på honom att han saknade syster. Han kryper runt och letar efter närhet men risstrumporna hjälper honom. Dom ger honom värme och han kanske tror att det är syster yster som är där… vad vet jag…

Den här bloggen är också lättare att infoga bilder. Jag vet inte vad som hände men jag hade rejäla problem att få in bilderna i Blogger efter att jag uppdaterade till Windows 7. Här har jag inte haft några större problem ännu varjefall… För att jag skulle testa tänkte jag ta kameran ut och ta kort på hästarna men dom gick längst ner i hagen så Geisha och lite höstlöv fick bli modeller istället…

Hakuba has a lot of natural beauty however it does not have any Geisha girls living in the village. Today I took a drive to Togura Kamiyamada Onsen about 80 minutes away via Nagano. I was invited to the Kamesei Ryokan to sample their Kaiseki lunch where they have some local Geisha girls performing  traditional dance, song and play the shamisen. A great afternoon and definately worth checking out if you have a day off from your busy skiing schedule in Hakuba.  The area is a traditional onsen town and the Kamesei Ryokan has a beautiful soft water onsen bath to relax in before you sit down to your lunch.

With Christmas around the corner, I’m trying to get as many booking in as possible as I’ve got lots of people to buy for which means working non stop, so in the office most days of the week and then taking personal bookings on the weekends.

On the Sunday, I had an early start, a yoga class at 10, then had to dash to a job for Jill from Festival of Japan. She runs a company which hires out kimonos, wigs, and transforms girls into geishas perfect for all type of events, wedding or photo shoots, she also do a lot of corporate events where girls like me do small jobs like meeting and greeting guests. She’s a wonderful person to work for and a true guru on everything Japanese.

I was working alongside the beautiful May, we worked together last September (for a really nasty “agency” who never paid us after ignoring our million phone calls and emails!!!) so it was also nice catching up with her.

The job we were doing was for Pratham Charity, they were holding an Japanese themed event at Roka restaurant.  I wore a beautiful blue kimono which had was made up of little crane birds all over and then had vibrant flowers on it too. She has a HUGE collection (over 150) and this is my fave.

We headed over to Charlotte street hotel, we had a room allocated to us where Victoria and Jill did the final touches. The bed in the room was so high and looked so comfy, I couldn’t resist lying down on it, it was super comfy too! Reminded me of the princess and the pea!

The job was pretty straight forward, we had to meet and greet guests. It was a star studded event, the guests included Jasmin Le Bon (!!!), James Caan, Danielle Lloyd, some of The Saturdays’ girls and Im sure a lot more people who I didnt recognise (I’m not good with celeb spotting!)

The was an auction which took place, prizes included a formula one helmet which would be signed by Jenson Button, hanging out with the Man United football team a night before amatch – meal and drinks, staying at the same hotel  and watching the match from a VIP box, there were a few other items up for auction but these 2 were the ones which stuck in my mind as Marc is a big Formula 1 fan and supports Man united too. All the proceeds from the event went to Pratham Charity.

Our night finished around 11pm, where I took my make up off and jumped into a taxi home. It was a long day and I was looking forward to curling up in bed and having a much needed nights sleep.

I have a busy few weeks coming up, 60’s themed party, Marcs flying class, tennis and then shooting with Lara Jade and Joanna Briggs (YAY!! 2 of my fav photographers!!) but I have a few dates free for bookings if anyone wants to squeeze in a shoot before the end of the year? I might even do you a special rate I’m free the 28th Nov and then 6th, 12th and 13th Dec .

I couldn’t resist posting these pictures from Christian Dior’s 2007 Spring/Summer Couture Collection inspired by Madame Butterfly. Here’s a link to the Vogue Catwalk Report, including close-ups of the dresses.

This collection which was both praised profusely, and harshly criticized for its all-pervading Orientalism. While the fact that it’s couture needs to be taken into consideration, I can’t help but feel that these dresses mix the sublime with the ridiculous – a classic example of taking elements from another culture without any of the spirit behind it.

The collection has none of the  simplicity and restraint of traditional Japan, but the dresses are decadent and bold. It’s John Galliano doing Japan his own way, with Japan as the stage for his own fantasy ball. This is what makes it new, and what makes it interesting.

Do women of other cultures whose roles are more circumscribed by society have closer bonds with one another, richer inner lives, and more security in knowing where they belong and what they can expect out of life and each other? 

In this picture, the geisha come together to share stories and intimate conversations.  They share each others’ cleansing  water too because they are deeply bonded by their life experiences , which they share so deeply.  Each one may have a different way of expressing geisha, but each understand the other in a way that no one else can.  They all experienced the sacrifices they made to become geisha and they all continue to encourage each other to dream.

Citei um trecho dele ontem e acabei de ler hoje.

Liza Dalby é uma antropóloga americana, mais famosa pelo livro Gueixa. Dalby viveu no Japão quando criança e desenvolveu uma paixão pelo país. Depois de formada, viveu como gueixa durante um ano como parte da pesquisa que geraria sua tese, The Institution of the Geisha in Modern Japanese Society, e, posteriormente, o livro citado.

A convivência com as gueixas fez com que ela se interessasse por outro símbolo nipônico: o kimono. Neste livro, a antropóloga aborda todos os aspectos do vestuário japonês típico, desde sua história até o simbolismo dentro da cultura do Japão.

Sou suspeita, porque sou fã da Dalby, mas considero o livro essencial pra quem gosta de kimono e quer entendê-lo. Aliás, recomendo a leitura dos dois livros, pois são complementares.
