There have been numerous articles in the last few years declaring that geeks are now cool. Shows like Big Bang Theory and Glee are held up as proof of this trend. It’s not the Marcia Bradys or the Mike Seavers we want to root for anymore. We love outcasts and braniacs. ComicCon isn’t just for Trekkers anymore. When did the tide turn? My first answer would be with Veronica Mars. But thinking back, there was Freaks and Geeks—short-lived as it was. But, wait. Even before that, there was Buffy. She may have been the original cool social reject; it helped that she was hot.

So imagine it’s 1997. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a campy film starring Kristy Swanson that you may remember from earlier in the decade. Joss Whedon is not a name you hear regularly, if at all (did you know he was a writer on Toy Story?), and you’ve certainly never heard of a Whedonverse.

The stage, complete with eerie horror movie music, is set when a horny teenage couple break into the high school, apparently to get it on, but—oops—the perky blond chick is a vampire who changes and brutally kills the guy. (Sucks to be that actor. Congratulations, you landed a part in what promises to be a hit teen drama. But you die in the first two minutes.)

For those not familiar with slayerism, the opening credits and voiceover give the gist; in every generation, there is a chosen one, etc., etc. Here, Buffy is the fresh-faced Sarah Michelle Gellar, known mainly as a soap actress.

Buffy’s mom drops her off at her new school in fictitious Sunnydale, CA, where she has apparently transferred following the events of the film. And wouldn’t you know it? Sunnydale is smack on top of the Hellmouth, a portal to all things occult. On Buffy’s very first day, a body turns up in a locker with telltale bite marks on its neck. But we’ll get back to that…

In addition to introducing Hellmouth-adjacent life, the pilot takes as its storyline a typical teenage tale; Buffy’s attempt to fit in with the cool crowd, only to find that she is destined to walk among the outcasts. She approaches her new school with hope for normalcy, but nevertheless carries a sharpened wooden stake in her bag. (“Pepper spray is just so passé.”)

She first befriends the self-centered beauty queen Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter), who picks on the brainy Willow (Alyson Hannigan). Meanwhile, charmingly awkward Xander (Nicholas Brendon) can’t keep his eyes off of Buffy. Willow likes Xander. Mr. Giles (Anthony Head), new librarian in the apparently deserted school library, seems to already know all about Buffy’s slaying ways. So she goes to him when she learns about the locker body.

 Vampires live under the city and are gearing up for some huge revolt, called The Harvest. So Buffy’s going to have a busy sophomore year, what with cheerleading, homework, and ass-kicking.

 Oh, and I did I mention there is a dark and mysterious, and ridiculously hot guy trailing Buffy around town? We don’t get a name, or much information at all, except that he knows what’s up with the Harvest.

 So the pilot gets us off and running with plenty of action, love triangleism, and more on the mysterious guy (who will, of course, be introduced later in the series as Angel), to look forward to. It’s a bit dark, often funny, and has enough eye candy to get addictive. And this is all despite the fact that, objectively speaking, it’s kind of bad. The acting, the dialogue… but stuff can be bad and still plenty entertaining. Just look at the original Star Wars.

Sarah Michelle Gellar gave birth to her beautiful baby on the 19th September this year, and just two months later is the talk of the media as she stepped out looking slim and svelte already. At 32 years old, how did she do it?

According to US Magazine:

“No official word on how she shed the pounds, but she did 55-minute Pilates sessions up to three times a week with trainer Alycea Ungaro to stay fit while pregnant.”

Now Sarah Michelle Prinze, the actress is the wife of Freddie Prinze and is reported to have attended regular pre-natal Pilates classes and is apparently continuing the regime with post-natal Pilates now.

She is by no means the only celebrity to have appeared in the media recently looking toned and fit and declaring Pilates is the answer; she is in good company with the likes of Megan Fox and Naomi Campbell, and sports people such as David Beckham also reporting to have found Pilates great for their health and fitness.

Women should certainly not feel pressured to rush into keeping fit whilst pregnant or losing their baby weight straight away, but we do seem to. Doing Pilates classes is a form of exercise that most people can manage and many GPs recommend, but you should always speak to your GP if looking to exercise during pregnancy and be sure to use a reputable Pilates instructor.

Whereas in the old times they had to think twice before crossing the valleys to enter India, this time around they entered as if it was a cake walk. Even an ordinary civilian has to undergo tedious and harassing security checks [port authority, border checks…] before entering a country, they came as if it was their own home. Christ, I had forgotten about these. How unnerving to see the girl who played Buffy Summers, a character predicated on reversing the entire “pretty blond cheerleader as victim” stereotype, posing in shots like these. Don’t get me wrong – I love ‘em, esthetically and as a gaillo fan, but they certainly bring to the forefront the issue of violence against women in a way that perhaps a shoot with any other actress may not have. There’s a ghoulish fetishism inherent in images like this that I think is all too easy to ignore sometimes, unless some element draws our attention away from the story. Again, to each their own until someone loses an eye, but sometimes it’s good to realize just how far down the rabbit hole goes in terms of what resonates with us in our entertainment.

An extended exercise in awfulness

If such a place exists as ‘artists’ hell’, then that is the place to which the creators of The Air I Breathe should be banished, for eternity and a day. But before we let them leave, we should first boil them in a vat and steam them mercilessly into repentance over a mound of organic cabbages.

Perhaps I am getting a little excitable, but just how did it go so badly wrong? At first, the signs for The Air I Breathe were auspicious. Forest Whitaker, fresh from his triumphant portrayal of the petulant demagogue Idi Amin, was joined in the billing by Kevin Bacon, Brendan Fraser and Sarah Michelle Gellar. A young director, Jieho Lee offered the possibility of a fresh perspective and the tagline was alluring: ‘Sometimes the things we can’t change end up changing us.’

Ninety minutes later I wound up confused and disappointed. Set in a faceless ‘Gothamesque’ city, the plot had intended to portray snapshots of the grubby underbelly of American society through four separate, but interwoven mini dramas. These four vignettes had been drawn from a Chinese proverb that suggests that four emotional cornerstones characterise life: happiness, pleasure, sorrow and love.

What ensued, however, was vapid and uninspiring. Grim, broke and laughing like a lunatic, the best actor of the lot, Forest Whittaker (Happiness), was despatched with alarming efficiency by Lee with the film just twenty five minutes old. Affording the Oscar winning actor just enough time to inexplicably squander $50,000 on a horse called ‘Butterfly’, because, ‘he likes butterflies.’

But before you can properly lament the fact that Happiness was not granted the slightest chance to justify his name, you are disturbed by the arrival of one of the most ludicrous cinematic inventions of modern times.

The character of Fingers, I presume, was devised as the film’s sinister, Machiavellian, villain: a money-driven mobster intended to make people’s knees shake like maracas. But the all-Italian, cool but dangerous, Noo Yawk Tawkin mafia boss is so clichéd that Andy Garcia, an elsewhere respectable actor, is successful only in conjuring a hilarious caricature.

For the entirety of the film he strutted about his patch, caught in an endless, tedious soliloquy, uttering nonsense about ‘biwsnus’ and ‘wrespect’, stopping only to shoot the occasional hapless victim with disquieting alacrity. Fittingly for a film that was as deep as a puddle, the origins of his name were equally glib: Fingers was so-called due to his predisposition to remove the odd digit with a rusty pair of scissors. Charming.

As the plot trundled forward, further ridiculous characters appeared, none worse than Fingers’ nephew Tony: a loquacious braggart in town with the intention of ‘popping his cherry.’ In a film fraught with unnecessary bloodletting, sadly Tony narrowly escaped a similarly grizzly fate, due only to Brendan Fraser’s useful ability to glimpse into the future.

With tragic inevitability things grew ever more depressingly bleak, with a succession of traffic accidents, attempted suicides and common assaults being thrown into the mix, before a flash of serendipity arrived to solve the all the tragic woes of the plot in a glorious stroke of fortune. Meanwhile Bacon and Gellar struggled admirably with the scraps, buoyed only by the presence of a creditable indie soundtrack and the odd sharply directed scene.

The Air I Breathe fails as a work of art on a spectacular number of levels. Attempting to straddle the void between an action flick, a morality tale and a slap stick comedy, it ends up suffering from an identity crisis of Clark Kent proportions. The characters are bland pastiches of something interesting, the stuff from which stereotypes sprout, and the script remains reassuringly awful throughout.

The only question that lingered was how this drivel escaped from the studio and weaved its way through post production without being apprehended at some point on route. At least, now that it has arrived, we can judge it for what it is: an ignominious failure, so bad that it is utterly unforgettable.
