So since some “unflattering” shots of Gemma Ward have surfaced people have been calling the model fat and saying that’s why she took a break from the business. Well, I say Gemma looks just healthy and normal … kind of like the rest of us, you know the people who aren’t models. It’s quite shameful that since she’s developed a healthier figure she’s been criticized and called names. Her former figure was toothpick like and just plain unflattering. I’ve never been a big fan of her, or found her extremely beautiful, but give her a break please!

Big news in the modeling world this week: supermodel Gemma Ward has quit modeling, allegedly after photographs which showed her at a new, “heftier” size were criticized. Blogger Bryan Boy is largely being labeled the reason for her quitting, due to his blog post on the subject, but I highly doubt he’s to blame.

I for one think Gemma looks wonderful, and much healthier, and at 22, let’s be honest: she’s nearing her peak. I know, I know — HOW COULD YOU SAY SUCH THINGS, YOU AWFUL WOMAN. Those are the break s of the modeling industry, however. Gemma was a teen sensation, with a stunning face and an emaciated figure, and when you’ve been modeling since you were 14, your mid-20s are a quite sensible time to “retire.”

My best guess, based on Gemma’s recent weight gain, is that she found that when you are not a pubescent teen it really isn’t easy (and doesn’t feel good) to be a skeletal size zero and, hey, maybe she should try and enjoy her youth? She looks normal and healthy, and she’ll always have her gorgeous face. In the Australian market, Gemma can certainly get away with being “bigger” (though she’s not big at all!), but the international supermodel machine, yes, demands a smaller size. There may also be a drug element involved, but I don’t think it’s fair to speculate.

Is Gemma out of the game for good? I don’t know about that. It depends on why she quit. I don’t think it’s because one blogger posted pictures of her looking a bit big and a bunch of asshole commenters were mean to her. It’s clear something more complex, and deeper has driven this decision. I say good for her, if she’s ready to try something else. She looks GREAT.

Oh, Daniel Radcliffe, you gigantic moron. The Daily Mirror is reporting that my dear little DRad was seen at a party last week smoking pot, wandering around proclaiming “I love weed!” and generally being very out of it.

Well, I knew that he was a smoker, but this seems a bit stupid of him. He’s the most high profile “child” actor in the world, and still very much attached to the franchise. The WB’s PR team must be having an epileptic fit. But, that said, it’s also THE DAILY MIRROR, which is a pretty bottom-barrel tabloid, so you can hardly take the report at face value. Aside from the alleged “I love weed,” comments, the party guest quoted noted he had a spliff, and seemed “out of it.” Well, he’s 20 in London, so he was probably drinking. And in Europe it’s common to roll your own cigarettes, so for all we know the ciggie in the pic is just that. We’ve got nothing but a suggestive photo and a story from this girl.

Now, I’m not making excuses, but since it’s the Daily Mirror, you have to beg the question. They were looking for a sensational story, and they got it, from a 26-year-old who showed up to the party when it was almost over, and there were only 8 people left, including Daniel. They oh-so-conveniently got a picture of him looking dopey and smoking something (and Daniel looks dopey when SOBER, thanks). I have no doubt that Daniel occasionally does supremely stupid things (he’s young, plus he has money to burn), but he’s never been so dumb as to slip up this badly, in public, to a person who could go to the papers. DRad has generally shown himself to be a sensible, mature, down-to-earth type. He’s also been incredibly well-heeled in smart PR, and conducting himself in public situations. It’s either bullshit, or 100% true, and if the latter, Daniel really needs to reevaluate the company he keeps.

While I’m a bit disappointed that he would be smoking pot, he’s 20 and an actor, so I can hardly put it past him. If true, it’s just a shame that he couldn’t be in a “safe space” among people he thought were friends.

There have been debates whether the Australian film industry still needs the control and support of the government or not. The cinema of Australia can thrive without any assistance and the industry can do more in terms of global competitiveness if it is not controlled by the government’s funding body, Screen Australia.

The films from Down Under have done more in making people around the world become aware of the country, thanks mainly to the success of actors like Nicole Kidman, Mel Gibson, Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Eric Bana, Geoffrey Rush, Guy Pearce, Naomi Watts and Cate Blanchett who have become synonymous to modern filmmaking.

Australia’s world-class facilities, state-of-the art digital and visual effects production services, acclaimed cast and crew and spectacular locations also make it a sought-after location for foreign films including Superman Returns, Matrix Trilogy, Charlotte’s Web, Ghost Rider and The Ruins. It is, of course, something that our local cinema lacks.

This month, six critically-acclaimed films from Australia are going the rounds of cinemas in Manila and Cebu as the Australian Embassy presents the 7th Australian Film Festival. It runs until Nov. 14, and the last leg is the Ayala Centre Cebu.

“The embassy is pleased to continue its tradition of providing Filipino moviegoers the opportunity to experience Australian film excellence and learn more about Australian popular culture, history and contemporary values,” Australian ambassador to the Philippines Rod Smith said at the opening of the festival.

The festival is opened by visiting Australian director Elissa Down with the premiere of her film The Black Balloon. The Los Angeles-based director arrived in Manila for the screening of the film and to conduct master classes at the University of the Philippines Film Institute and Mowelfund Institute.

“Down’s visit will further strengthen ties between the Australian and Filipino film industries which have developed through the film festival and Cinemanila during the past few years, through workshops for student film producers and directors conducted by visiting Australian actors and directors,” Ambassador Smith said.

The Black Balloon, starring Academy Award-nominated and Emmy Award-winning actress Toni Collette (Sixth Sense, About A Boy), follows the story of 15-year-old Thomas (Rhys Wakefield) who tries to fit in his new life as his family moves to a new home while taking care of his autistic older brother Charlie (Luke Ford, The Mummy-Tomb of the Dragon Emperor) and nurturing a budding romance with new girlfriend Jackie (Australian supermodel and actress Gemma Ward). Charlie takes Thomas on an emotional journey in a story that is funny, confronting and ultimately heart-warming.

“This film is about unconditional love. It’s a dramady [drama-comedy] inspired from the story of my own family,” Down told Standard Today. “I’ve got two brothers who have autism so if you could imagine, growing up with them was a little crazy. Making this movie was really a therapy on my part.”

Down, who also co-wrote and co-produced The Black Balloon, said that the film was awarded by the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival Crystal Bear for Best Feature-Length film last year. Back in her hometown, it received the Australian Film Institute awards for Best Direction, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Film, Best Screenplay, and Best Editing.

“It won numerous awards abroad and it’s inspiring in a way that it motivates me to write stories and make more films that talk about families, real people. The Black Balloon, as I’ve said, talks about love that knows no limit and everyone can relate most especially to the lead character,” the director said.

Also featured in this year’s festival are Unfinished Sky, a romantic drama about the nature of loss and the language of love; The Bank, a political thriller set in the world of high finance; the romantic comedy Danny Deckchair; Garage Days, a story about a teenager’s dream to be a rock star; and The Hard Word starring Guy Pearce (Memento, The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, LA Confidential) and Golden Globe winner Rachel Griffiths (Six Feet Under, Brothers and Sisters).

Beautiful model, Gemma is said to retire from modeling…I really don’t know why, cause she’s gorgeous. The  model industry is calling her “FAT,” so I guess shes not stick ‘n bones anymore & they consider her plus size…which I think is crazy…. She has been the face for designers like Burberry, Calvin Klein Fragrance, face of Dior, D&G, Louis Vuitton etc., she has  an extremely long list.  She has been on just about all the Vogue Magazines as well as the W. She’s also one of the highest paid models.  Check out some of her photos….

Gemma Ward Quits Modeling Amid Weight Criticism

The latest news on the fashion front? Gemma Ward, the beautiful healthy-looking 22-year-old Australian supermodel, decided to quit modeling this week following attacks from the media about her weight gain.

Call me crazy, but this looks like a healthy woman… not someone with even a teeny ounce of a weight problem. And we wonder why girls are always questioning their appearance rather than embracing their bodies…

Eu só ia postar sobre ela semana que vem, mas depois que li certas notícias sobre um suposto “fim de carreira” da Gemma, tenho que me pronunciar.

Não sou fãããã assim dela, mas acho-a linda e admiro a moça.  Vários blogs/sites de moda estão comentando que ela não tem mais vontade de desfilar desde a morte do ator Heath Ledger, o qual dizem que ela estava tendo um affair.

Gemma Ward’s agent has announced that the model will not be reviving her modeling career. She has been absent off the runway for several seasons leaving everyone wondering when and if she would return. Gemma was last romantically linked to late actor, Heath Ledger.

Who else read yesterday’s article on Gemma Ward and felt their insides churn? Something about her having no plans to return to modelling and cryptically refering to a set of recent photographs of her in NYC where she looks “healthy”. These are the images the article refers too btw.

This isn’t the first time Gemma’s weight gain has raised eyebrows. In January, some paparazzi photos emerged of on a Byron Bay holiday, in a bikini.   I was browsing some forums to see what people were saying about the current crop of paparazzi shots and it got my blood boiling. Yes, she has gained weight. SO WHAT?!

The Ward family, including Gemma and her model-turned-writer sister Sophie, are all tall and naturally slim. There are two major things going on here:
1. She is no longer 16
2. She is no longer modeling

I will guarantee that a 22 year old girl’s body is going to be different from that of a 16 year old. Open any fashion magazine circa 2005 and Gemma’s ethereal face will be staring back at you, along with her 16 year old body. As a model, she is going to be exercising and eating a specific diet in order to keep her limbs toned and her stomach flat, no matter how thin she naturally is. Without the pressure of maintaining a job based on her figure, it’s no wonder she eased up a bit on her strict regime. I mean, come on, wouldn’t you?!

Gemma doesn’t want to model at the moment, she wants to focus on acting. Have you seen The Black Balloon, the Aussie film she was in? I usually cannot stand Australian films but I watched this, just to see Gemma, and I loved it. Her performance was nothing less than brilliant and I have no doubt that she can carve a successful career for herself if she wants to.

Even if she were to return to modeling, she would never look exactly the same as she did when she was 15 and opening runway shows for the likes of Hermes or Chanel. Right this second, she could not return to modeling. She is not the correct size for high fashion. I am not saying this for people to get their knickers into a bundle over and yell at me about embracing all shapes and sizes, I’m merely stating the truth. AT THE MOMENT the fashion industry hires very thin girls as their models. It is just the way it is. The fact that you think it is wrong has nothing to do with it. Gemma herself does not want to be involved with the fashion industry right now. Herego she has relaxed her diet and excerise routines in order to enjoy the rest of what the world has to offer. She has not said ‘never again’, just at the moment. We should respect her wishes and let her live her life however she wants it. Weight is not the most important thing in the world.

I realize that posting this is just adding more debate to the issue, but I love her too much to just stay silent and not send my 2cents worth of support into the world wide web. Gemma is a beautiful girl and she always will be, regardless of her size. So, to celebrate all things Gemma Ward, I’ll share with you my favourite editorial of hers where, to me, she represents everything about an Australian summer and she is utterly breathtaking…

ps. I have a confession to make. At the height of Gemma’s modelling career, I wasn’t a fan. I didn’t like the alien-look in her face and her gangly limbs. It’s only since she begun to taper away from the industry circa 2008 that I begun to really see her beauty. Now, I am un-ashamedly obsessed. I think it’s probably due to the fact that I appreciate the more unusual, off-beat notions of beauty. But yes. I love Gemma Ward!

This is my TWO DAYS LATE Happy 22nd Birthday + WE LOVE YOU Gemma post. As some of you know the 14 and 15 year old me pretty much didn’t give a flying popsicle about anything other than ballet, fashion shows and Gemma Ward. Kind of embarrassing now that I think of it but oh well!

Evil creeps up on Liv Tyler in Bryan Bertino's eerie "The Strangers."

With horror movies, particularly 21st-century ones, sometimes it’s better to ask “is this film effective?” and not “is this film original?” Because truth be told, there’s not much new and different about “The Strangers,” Bryan Bertino’s lean and mostly capable thriller. The whole “we’re not safe in our own homes” concept? It’s been done before better, and we’ve seen these characters creep under windows and cry a thousand times.

So “The Strangers” doesn’t get high marks for originality. But when a horror movie this spare and gripping juices your nerves like electrical wires, innovation’s something of a moot point. What Bertino lacks in originality he more than makes up for in execution. This is a director who understands that fear of the unknown and the tension that fear creates are what keep us up nights starting at every floorboard creak. Bertino builds this anxiety to unbearable levels using horror standards – the face emerging from the shadows, a car rendered useless by flat tires, the old peel-back-the-curtain-and-boo! — that get us squirming uneasily in our seats right up to the purely stupid ending. 

“Tension” – that’s the watchword here. The film’s first act is all about tension, starting with the shaky relationship between Kristen (Liv Tyler, a fine scream queen) and James (Scott Speedman). The pair’s headed to his parents’ remote vacation home, and it’s clear early that something’s a little off-kilter. Things only get more awkward when they arrive at the house — turns out James expected a different answer to his marriage proposal. The house is filled with champagne and rose petals, all the trappings of a giddy engagement. Somehow Tyler and Speedman, B-level actors at best, capture the pain and strangeness surrounding this relationship speedbump beautifully, relying more on defeated facial expressions and body language than dialogue (in short supply here). They’ve hit a wall, they know it and they don’t know where to go next, or if they care enough to keep trying. There’s something sadly universal in that struggle that endears Kristen and James to us, makes them real people and not just bodies to be dispatched messily into the afterlife.

But don’t go fretting that there’s no action here and no bloodshed. After the sometimes-too-languid setup, “The Strangers” packs plenty of thrills, shrieks and spatters into the second half. Bertino brings on mayhem in the form of three masked intruders who proceed to unleash a hailstorm of psychological torment on Kristen and James. These mind games are the film’s meat. It’s the little moments, like the moved smoke detector, the missing cell phone charger and the doorknob rattles, that start to unglue Kristen and James. That sense of security a locked door and a security system provide go all to hell, and we can’t help but get dragged along.

Then ”The Strangers” moves from mental to physical torture, and, well, that’s right about where things go a little sour. The characters start to do predictably illogical, dumb things — some mind-bogglingly so — simply because the plot requires them to. (Perhaps Bertino would have us believe fear makes logical people develop the I.Q. of sea kelp.) There’s more than one let’s-split-up moment that’s laughable. As the end approaches, “The Strangers” starts a downward spiral toward an end that is so outrageously over-the-top and contrived that it feels like it belongs in a vastly different and inferior film. The finale is an insult to our intelligence — except for the strangers’ frightening explanation of why they targeted Kristen and James — and it’s lazy to boot. 

Does the end ruin “The Strangers”? It comes close, damn close, but the movie’s first half works perfectly as an intense psychological thriller, with Bertino shining an unwelcome light on that primordial human fear: that anyone can get to us anywhere at any time. And for much of the film this new director has the good sense to let tension run amock and let his actors run with it. Bertino would do well to revisit this strategy if he hopes to become anything more than a fifth-rate John Carpenter.

Grade: C

Vi este filme no cinema em circunstâncias peculiares: eu, recém operada de apendicite e retirada de vesícula. Mal caminhava normalmente, mas não pude deixar de me impressionar com este que considero um dos melhores suspenses dos últimos tempos. A começar pela linda Liv Tyler (sempre a achei linda, ao contrário do pai), que não falhou na interpretação e deu todo seu charme à trama. Se você vir este filme e uma tristeza acompanhada de uma angústia incessante lhe afligir, não se sinta só: acho que estes sentimentos acompanham qualquer um que se sensibilize com o casal protagonista. Ver do que um ser humano é capaz por pura maldade é algo aterrador e pior: verídico. Vale a pena conferir.

The other day, Justin came here to work on his oral defense presentation. He asked me to help him find pictures of stem cells, since his research paper is all about stem cells. I bumped into these pictures, and I can’t believe how stem cells can be so pretty and colorful! In pictures! haha. I just love them!
