Sometimes what we are taught is what we know, until we find a reason to question it or unless one is of a highly inquisitive nature.  I think that poses a big responsibility on teachers and the like, to not pass on their opinions, their position over issues, on to the students and maintain a neutral position. Since I’ve come to LSE, in almost all lectures, every prof, save one, has criticised the World Bank for being responsible for deepening poverty through their SAPs. But only one made us realise that we couldn’t take a stance until we know all sides of the debate. Did the WB actually intend those programs to fail? I believe that the professors who do pass their cynicism of WB in their lectures would obviously know all sides of the debate and have good enough reason to do so. But without telling the student those reasons or without stimulating their enquiry, is it right to condition their minds?  Teachers are often looked upon as role models and many times students will take the teacher’s word for a particular point being right or wrong.

Maybe in issues like World Bank’s policies one could maintain a neutral position while teaching the subject but how about issues involving national boundaries and national integrity? Do we teach the students the geography we believe is correct or the one, which the rest of the world believes is correct? The map of India as I learned in my history, geography classes in school was how it is represented in the first picture (taken from mapofindia.com) but the map my friend who is a Pakistani knows, is something like in the second picture. Which one is correct? Until, I think 11^th or 12^th standard I didn’t even know about the existence of any other kind of map of India and I would have fought over PoK being an Indian territory with anybody suggesting that it is Pakistan. All I knew (which I believe is the common impression) was that it is unrightfully under Pakistan’s control, it is Pakistan occupied!  But it came as a surprise that PoK is not even a term outside of India. That it is actually PaK (quite a coincidence! ) Pakistan administered Kashmir. The area is part of Pakistan, if we look at maps of India on websites outside the Indian domain.. Like figure 2 or 3 from undp and geology.com respectively. We’ve been conditioned all through our schooling to take the figure 1 as the map of India. Can rejecting the existence of ‘other’ make the first correct or legitimate (at least for their own citizens!)?  And once we move beyond our own borders can this ignorance actually lead to arrogance on issues that may concern the political boundaries. In a school which has “…and Political Science” in its name, we are bound to be political, we are bound to have opinions and positions on sensitive issues as Indo-Pak or Israel-Palestine. Can we afford to be ignorant? The old saying “Ignorance is bliss” has in my opinion become really old and can no longer be used to justify it. I think we should be taught to be always sceptical of what we think we know.

Laptops and desktops are repository of photos and songs.. people will have GBs of songs and same for pictures.. I wonder do we ever even look at those pictures again and do we ever manage to listen to all the songs or we just keep listening to the same play-list we had made long time ago? At least that’s true for me.. So yesterday I just played all songs in random mode and I was surprised to hear songs long forgotten, songs I didn’t even know existed on my comp.. and same for pictures.. I changed my screensaver to randomly pick photos from all the albums on my comp and Lo! There were pictures from my school time, pictures from my childhood.. I don’t even remember scanning them! I spent the entire evening going through all my albums and listening to random songs..

I thought I’ll put a collage of some very nice snaps which a friend took during our recent (one year ago) Rajasthan trip but then it took me about 8 months to get those snaps from him!

Ein einziges Eiweißmolekül löst unangenehmen Körpergeruch bei schwitzenden Menschen aus. Alle geruchsbildenden Schweißbestandteile werden von diesem Transportprotein an die Hautoberfläche befördert, fanden Wissenschaftler des Forschungszentrums der Beiersdorf AG in Hamburg heraus. Die Ergebnisse seien im Fachblatt «Journal of Investigative Dermatology» (online) veröffentlicht, teilte der Kosmetikkonzern mit. Erst an der Hautoberfläche werden die Schweißbestandteile durch Bakterien zerlegt. Dabei entstehen Stoffe, die den typischen Geruch ausmachen.

Die Forscher entdeckten bei ihren Untersuchungen zum Schwitzen einen entscheidenden Genunterschied zwischen Asiaten und Europäern. Je nach regionaler Herkunft tritt bei 30 bis 100 Prozent der asiatischen Bevölkerung kein ausgeprägter Körpergeruch auf. Eine Vorliebe für wenig riechende Partner erscheine als plausible Erklärung für die bemerkenswerte Verbreitung dieser Genvariante in Asien.

I first met Bim way back in 2005/2006. They posted a looking-for-photographer-ad in our egroup. I thought they were a soon to be wed couple, but it turned out they were a video team known as PlayBack and was looking to offer photo services as well.

Fast forward to April 2008, Bim & Gen asked to meet up with me to present my samples to a prospective client of theirs. I arrived 25 minutes late for I left my license and had to go back home. When I arrived they said that the client left to take a walk for a while. Then after waiting a few minutes and making me all sweat with guilt they finally blurted out that THEY were the client!!

After a few weeks later they asked if it was ok to have a back-up photographer shoot during their wedding. I started working as one, so I had no problems with it.

A few weeks/months pass then I learned that their backup photographer was MangoRed–and they insisted that I would still be their main photog!! I knew right then and there that it is all bull. hahaha. Why box up MangoRed into working with my style? We had to reverse roles!

Today, I got a call from a very old friend after a very long time. He, assuming I wouldn’t have his number after all these years,  wanted to play a prank. But unfortunately for him and fortunately for me he couldn’t do his act. So after the initial disappointment, he started telling me about another prank he has planned on one of his cousins..

The conversation after that went on to his PhD applications and how tensed he was about it and general talk. At the end of it I just told him probably like Calvin, he would want to keep Santa happy while he is still applying and not spoil his chances by being bad.. so he could forget his pranks for a little while . I’m sure there was a Calvin strip in which he tells Santa how good he has been and how he thinks he deserves all the gifts etc etc (I think Calvin is always complaining to Santa about him not giving the gifts he asks for, but at least he believes in Santa even if it is just for the sake of getting the gifts). I tried searching the strip but couldn’t find it.. Maybe someone else could help me there.

But I had a different set of questions here .. How close to Christmas should we start thinking about keeping Santa happy? Is he keeping a tab of our good and bad deeds always or he sets out a month when he leaves all other jobs and just monitors people’s activity? In any case, with the exploding population, he should be in need for new staff always. Be it monitoring people, keeping record of their activities, thinking about ‘appropriate’ gifts (which he thinks are appropriate but like Calvin, I think we never get what we want like a missile and a launcher ), buying/collecting/manufacturing gifts, distributing.. It’s a whole army up there! Where do I send my application for a job interview with him?

Santa will I get a job, if I stay good till Christmas or the monitoring period is over and since its closer to Christmas you are now busy collecting gifts?

Türkiye’de darbelerin sonu gelir mi? Ya da soruyu şöyle soralım; darbeyi sadece askerler mi yapar? Darbeler sadece askerlerin ürünü değilse başka kimler darbe yapabilir ve bu darbelerden hangisi daha tehlikeli?

12 Eylül sabahı uyandık ki sokaklarımızı askerler kaplamış. Okulların açılışı ertelendi diye sevindik. Birde baktık ki o askerler yüzünden ülkemiz geri kalmış. 26 Ekim 2009’a sabahı ise Türkiye yeni bir darbe ile karşılaştı. Bu darbenin mimarları ile askeri darbelerin mimarları arasında fark yoktu. Aynı merkezden gelen emirle yapılmışlardı. Fakat aralarında önemli bir fark vardı. Eski tür darbeler ülkeyi geri bırakır yenileri öldürüyor.

Genetiği değiştirilmiş ürünler yani GDO yönetmeliğinden söz ediyoruz. Bağışıklı sistemimize enjekte edilmiş bir virüsü gibi her on yılda bir nükseden darbe dönemlerinin kapanmasının ardından geldi bu öldürücü darbeydi bu.

GDO’cuların dışında hiçbir kuruluşla müşavere edilmeyen bu yönetmelik, Türkiye’yi adeta şoke etti. Hükümet adeta sağ gösterip sol vurmuştu. Herkes Bankalar Kurulu’nun gündeminde tuttuğu Ulusal Biyogüvenlik Yasa Tasarısı’nın TBMM’ye gelmesini beklerken bir sabah Türkiye, GDO yönetmeliği ile uyandı.

26 Ekim sabahına Sağlık ve Gıda Güvenliği Hareketi’nin “Ankara köleliği resmileştirdi” başlıklı açıklaması sarstı Türkiye’yi. Sarsılmak için seçilen başlık bile tek başında yeterliydi. Şok adeta gün boyu atlatılamadı. Sağlık Bakanı’nın domuz gribi kehaneti kulaklarda yankılanırken ve art arda domuz gribinden öldüğü iddia edilen ölümler ve Başbakan’ın Sağlık Bakanı’nı grup toplantısında adeta azarlarcasına bir üslupla eleştirmesinin ardından aşı tartışmalarının da gribin de ateşi birden düştüğü görüldü.

Artık kimilerinin ilk kez duyduğu fakat uzun yıllardır tartışa durduğumuz nur topu gibi bir tartışma konumuz daha olmuştu. Sahi neydi bu GDO? Konuyu tam olarak ne uzmanlar ne siyasetçiler ne de halk biliyordu.

Sağlık ve Gıda Güvenliği Hareketi’nin GDO yönetmeliğine iptal davası açacağız açıklamasıyla başlayan tartışmaya GDO karşıtı birçok sivil toplum örgütü ve medyanın yanı sıra Tarım Bakanı da katıldı.

Bakan, herkesin aksine GDO’yu yasakladıklarını iddia etti. Bunun üzerine GDO yandaşları ile iktidar yandaşlarının sesleri yükselmeye başladı. Biri ‘frankeştayn gıda lobisinin maskesi bir günde düştü’ başlıklı haberiyle tüm GDO karşıtlarının ABD’li GDO lobicilerinin desteklediğini iddia edecek kadar mesnetsiz atışlar yaptı sıkılmadan. Vakit yazarı Hasan Karakaya ise gazeteciler bilmediğini de bilir cinsinden yazdığı GDO yazısından GDO karşıtlarını “İsrail aşığı” yaptı çıktı bir bu eksikti cinsinden.

Peki, neydi sorun? GDO yönetmeliği insanları neden kamplara bölmüştü? Bu gerçekten ülkenin geleceğine saplanan bir hançer miydi yoksa bir can simidi mi? Hasan Karakaya nasıl olmuştu da GDO Yönetmeliği’ne karşı duranları “İsrail aşığı” yapıp çıkmıştı?

Bugün sorun Tarım Bakan’ın yönetmeliğin iddia edildiği gibi GDO’yu serbest bırakmak bir yana aksine yasakladığını iddia etmesiydi. Türkçe okumasının bilen herkesin gülüp geçtiği bu yaklaşıma bazı “yandaş”ların sahip çıkması normaldi. Çünkü Doğan Medyası bu işe karşı çıkıyordu o halde onlar karşıysa biz taraf olmalıyız dediler. Demek ki o taraftarsa biz karşıyız, o karşıysa biz taraftarız. Bu gerçek Türk medyasının objektiflere pek sık yansıyan fotoğrafıydı aslında.

Peki, bakan doğru söylüyor olabilir mi? Keşke bunu demek mümkün olabilseydi. Ama ne yazık ki değil. Çünkü bu yönetmelik öncesinde aynı Bakan defalarca Türkiye’ye kesinlikle GDO’lu ürün girmiyor derken bu yönetmeliği savunmak için geçmiş sözlerini göz ardı edip ‘geçmişte GDO’lu ürünler beyan edilmediği takdirde serbestte giriyordu bunu yasakladık’ şeklindeki beyanı, tenakusu gözler önüne seriyordu aslında.

GDO yönetmeliğinin 5/3. maddesi ile GDO’yu bebek mamalarında yasakladığı doğruydu doğru olmasına ama 5/6. madde ile yüzde 0,9’un altında GDO içeren ürünlerin GDO’suz sayması tümüyle bir aldatmacayla karşı karşıya kaldığımızın en açık göstergesiydi. Bu yetmezmiş gibi GDO’suz ürün üreten bir üreticinin ürünün GDO’suz olduğunu etiketine yazması 5/8 ile yasaklanmıştı. Kanuni bir dayanağı olmayan ve Anayasa Mahkemesi’nin kararlarına aykırı olarak ihdas edilen ‘gece kondu GDO kurulu’na 11. madde ile uygun gördüğü GDO ürünlerin ithalatına izin yetkisi yasaklama olarak yorumlanarak adeta bir yandan dil katliamı yaşattı.

Mezkûr yönetmeliğin 11/a-b’si gümrüğe gelen bir üründe “GDO çeşidini belirten belge aranır” denilerek ne yapmak istediğini ya da eleştiriler karşısında takındığı tavırla bu cümlenin nasıl bir çelişki oluşturduğunu görmek şöyle dursun, GDO tespit edilen ürünlerin kamuoyuna açıklanması dahi yasaklanmıştı.

Evet, bebek mamalarında yasaklanmıştı yasaklanmasına lakin alıcı bir ülkenin GDO konusunda engelleyici bir düzenlemesi yok ise Türkiye GDO’lu ürün ihraç edebilmesini öngörüyordu yönetmelik. ‘Peki, GDO’lu ürünün üretim ve ithalatı yasaklanmakta ise Türkiye ihraç edeceği GDO’lu ürün nereden bulacak?’ sorusu tümüyle cevapsız bir soru olarak kalacaktı ve öylede oldu.

‘GDO’lu ürünün asla yemem’ diyen Tarım Bakanı, ‘GDO’suz bir ürünün etiketine GDO’suz olduğunun yazılması engellenirken, neden ürünlerimizde alkol ve türevleri domuz ve katkıları içermemektedir yazılıyor’ sorusuna verecek cevap bulamaması çok tartışıldı. Yangından mal kaçırırcasına demokratik ülkelerde görülmeyen ben yaptım oldu, yerseniz türünden bir dayatma içeren yönetmeliği tartışılma biçiminin bile ‘yandaş’ ve ‘karşıt’ düzeyine indirgenmesi toplumun da kafasını bir hayli karıştırdı. GDO’suz yazmak yasakta ‘hormonsuzdur yazmak neden serbest?’ sorusunun da cevapsız kaldığını ortada.

Tümüyle GDO’lu olan Kanola’ya 04/08/2009 tarih ve 13394 sayılı bilgi edinme cevabında “Ülkemizde ekimi yapılan kanola tohumları GDO’lu tohumlar değildir” diyen Bakanlık yetkililerinin bu kez Bakan tarafından ‘Kanola, Soya, Oamuk, Mısır GDO’ludur’ denilerek yalanlanması GDO yasaklandı mı yasaklanmadı mı sorusundan çok ‘bu ülke nereye sürükleniyor?’ sorusunun sorulmasını gerektirdi.

GDO’yu yasakladık diyen Tarım Bakanlığı’na bağlı TAGEM Genel Müdürlüğü geçtiğimiz aylarda verdiği bilgi edinme cevabında dünyanın en büyük GDO’lu tohum üreticisi Monsanto ile birlikte “Çukurova Tarımsal Araştırma Enstitüsü-Karataş-Adana ve Nazilli Pamuk Araştırma  Enstitüsü’nün Nazilli merkezdeki arazilerinde” deneme ekimleri yaptıklarını açık açık kabul etmektesi bile bakanlığın GDO konusundaki resmi görüşünün yansıtılan olmadığını açıkta ortaya koyacak gülcü bir delildi. Aslında Türkiye’nin nereye sürüklendiği çok netti. Zaten Türkiye, sonu bilinmez bir maceranın içine zaten çekilmişti ve bunun yasal bir zemine çekilmesi gerekiyordu. Bu yönetmelikte bunu ifa etmek için hazırlanmıştı.

GDO’nun küresel bir silah olduğunu bu silaha sahip olanların insanları yönetebileceği, insanlığı tümüyle kontrol edebileceği, sağlıklarını bozmakla kalmayıp, düşünüp düşünmemelerine, üreyip ürememelerine, hatta yaşayıp yaşamamalarına bile karar verecek seviyeye doğru sürüklediğini gösteren bir silahtı üstelik. Dedi doku yazmaktan sövüp saymaktan GDO belasıyla mücadele edenleri bugüne kadar göremeyen kimselerin; “GDO’la ilgili bugüne kadar hiç kimse sesini çıkarmıyordu” şeklindeki cümlelerinin anlamı olabilir mi?

Bunun anlamını elbette basın köşe taşlarından daha ferasetli davranabilen toplum tarafından verilecektir.

Toplumun yükselen endişe ve artarak devam edecek tepkisi, kuşkusuz siyasi iradenin tıpkı domuz gribindeki geri adımı gibi GDO konusunda da geri adım attıracağı ortada. Çıkar odakları ve endüstrinin GDO’lu ürünlerden vazgeçmesi kolay olmadığına göre tüketiciye daha büyük görev düştüğü ortada. Bugüne kadar yasal bir düzenlemesi olmaması nedeniyle zaten hukuken yasak olan ve bu nedenle tüm sorumluluk ürünün GDO’lu olduğunu beyan etmeden üreten, ithal eden ve satan şirketlerde iken bugün, artık tüm sorumluluk GDO’nun tüm olumsuzluklarını bildiği farz edilen tüketicinin sorumluluğunu bir kenara not etme vakti.

Bu nedenle tüketicinin yeni bir model geliştirmesi gerekiyor. O model, bir başka inceleme de üzerinde ayrıntılı bir şekilde duracağımız arzı tüketmekten vazgeçip talebini tüketmeye yönelmesindedir. Talebin oluşturulması için tüketim tercihlerimizi gözden geçirmemiz şart.

Mesela kanola, mısır, soya ve pamuk ürünleri yüzde yüz GDO’lu ise bu ürünlerin ülkemizde de her şekliyle tüketilmekte ise ve özellikle yağları her mutfakta hatta her ticari üründe yer almakta ise tüketicinin bu yağdan uzaklaşarak, yüzde yüz GDO’suz olan Sızma Zeytinyağı’na yönelmesi gerecek. Kim bilir bu sayede katı yağı takıntısı olan ve dünyanın en nadide yağı Sızma Zeytinyağı sendromunda kurtulmuş olacak hanımlarımız. Market raflarındaki rengârenk gıda ürünlerinin neredeyse yüzde 80-90’nında ‘soya lesitini’ varsa ve soya tümüyle GDO’lu ise bu ürünlerden uzak durarak kendi talebimizi sunabiliriz. Arzcılar ister istemez arzdan kaçınacak zorunda kalacaklardır.

GDO’ya Diyanet ve İKÖ’de onay vermediğine göre, helâl tüketim endişesi taşıyanların GDO’ya karşı mücadele yapması ve bu mücadeleyi yürüten örgütlere destek olmaları da onlar için bir vecibeye dönüşmekte. Bırakınız helâl tüketim çabasını, insanoğlunun fıtratı değiştirme ve haddi aşma girişimi olan GDO’nun, tümüyle hem Türkiye’de hem de dünyada yasaklanması için herkesin kaçınamayacağı sorumlulukları var!

The past week and a half has been a blur.
Exploring the Netherlands, firguring out how to use public transport and trying everything to get a discount on the rediculously expensive trains here.

So get this, €89 to catch an hour and a half train to Amsterdam. That’s like $160AU!! Rip off! Haha. Also figured out that when you use the loo on the train that as soon as you flush, your business ends up on the tracks. Don’t worry, didn’t use the loo.

So this week I chilled out in Amsterdam, went on the cannal tours, visited a coffee shop and talked to the lovely ladies at the red light district. Although Amsterdam seems like a city of sin, with streets filled with prositutes, weed, gambling, magic mushrooms and live porn shows, there’s an atmosphere you can’t beat.

It’s actually really beautiful here, the old buildings, the people, THE FOOD, the water, the cold; i’m deffinately comming back here and bringing my friends.

Dunia ini memang penuh dengan keajaiban dari Sang Pencipta. Penciptaan yang tampaknya kecil dan remeh, seringkali memiliki kehebatan yang tak tertandingi. Seperti salah satu makhluk Allah yang bernama DNA (Deoxyribo Nucleic Acid). Secara ukuran tentu tidak bisa dibandingkan dengan gajah yang besar itu. Tapi soal kehebatan penyimpanan informasi, gajah tak bisa menandingi kekuatannya. Bahkan, segala macam informasi tentang fisik dan non fisik gajah malah disimpan rapi dalam DNA yang didesaign khusus oleh Allah pada setiap organisme. Gak percaya? Coba deh simak artikel dibawah ini, yuk mari….

DNA ITU APA YA?

Secara definisi, DNA dapat dikatakan sebagai jesenis asam nukleat yang tergolong biomolekul utama penyusun berat kering setiap organisme. Di dalamnya terkandung materi genetik yang memiliki fungsi untuk mengatur perkembangan biologis seluruh bentuk kehidupan secara sekuler. Dengan kata lain, DNA nerfungsi sebagai cetak biru yang memiliki informasi genetik setiap organisme seperti warna kulit, tekanan darah, bentuk wajah, tinggi badan, de el el pada setiap makhluk hidup.

Khusus untuk manusia, ada sekitar 200.000 gen di dalam DNA. Setiap gen itu tersusun dari rangkaian nukleotida khusus yang berjumlah sekitar 1000 sampai 186.000. Gen-gen tadi juga menyimpan hampir 200.000 kode protein yang ada di dalam tubuh manusia plus mengendalikannya agar berfungsi secara optimal. Dan perlu tau juga, 200.000 kode protein DNA tadi merupakan 3% dari keseluruhan informasi yng ada di DNA. Sisanya yang 97% masih belum bisa dilacak hingga sekarang.

Terus menurut penelitian juga, DNA itu ada pada 3 bagian sel yaitu nukleus, mitokondria dan kloroplas. Ketiganya memiliki perbedaan yang unik dan sulit untuk manusia menirunya. DNA nukleus berbentuk linear dan berisolasi sangat erat dengan protein histon. DNA jenis ini juga memiliki ciri yaitu mewarisi sifat-sifat yang berasal dari kedua orangtua. Makanya tidak mengherankan jika ada anak yang pintar sementara kedua orangtuanya juga pintar. Adapun DNA mitokondria dan kloroplas memiliki bentuk silkular dan tidak berasosiasi dengan protein histon. Kedua DNA ini tidak mewarisi sifat-sifat keturunan dari kedua orangtua, tapi hanya mewarisi sifat-sifat dari ibu saja.

Terakhir, DNA juga memiliki kesamaan dengan molekul-molekul yang lain. Ia juga memiliki komponen-komponen penting, seperti gugus fosfat, gula deoksiribosa, dan basa nitrogen. Khusus untuk basa nitrogen, beberapa orang mengenalnya dengan nama pasangan basa. Ketiga komponen itu kemudian membentuk satu unit monomer DNA yang disebut nuklotida. Karena hal ini, DNA tergolong sebagai polinuklotida. Wah, unik dan rumit ya….?!

DNA YANG SPEKTAKULER

Klo tadi ngomongin struktur DNA yang serba unik, gak ada salahnya jika kemudian bahas tentang kemampuan DNA dalam menyimpan data. Ada yang menarik? Jumlah informasi yang terdapat dalam DNA pada manusia belum bisa tertandingi hingga sekarang. Jika ensiklopedi terbesar di dunia seperti Ensiklopedia Britannica hanya terdiri dari 23 jilid dan memiliki 25.000 halaman maka informasi dalam DNA bisa jauh melebihi jumlah itu. Dalam satu molekul DNA, terdapat berbagai macam informasi yang banyaknya bisa mencapai satu juta ensiklopedi jika dituskan di atas kertas. Dan ingat, itu baru satu molekul saja lho… Dengan kata lain, satu molekul DNA manusia memiliki perbandingan jumlah 40:1 dengan ensiklopedia terbesar dunia.

Kemampuan DNA menyimpan data genetik juga tak bisa disaingi oleh komputer paling canggih sekalipun. Kalo bisa ditandingi, tentu sudah ada penemuan alat super kecil yang berisi jutaan milyar informasi tentang semua desaign makhluk hidup. Toh pada kenyataannya, baru ditemukan microchip yang kapasitas penyimpanan datanya jauh dibawah DNA.

DNA DAN SANG PENCIPTA

Keajaiban-keajaiban yang ada dalam DNA tak bisa dipungkiri memang merupakan bulti dahsyatnya penciptaan Sang Pencipta, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. Meskipun orang-orang kafir seperti Charles Darwin dan Karl Max menganggap DNA itu hanya terbentuk secara kebetulan, riset ilmiah tetap menunjukkan bahwa DNA diciptakan oleh Dzat Yang Maha Agung. Dan tentunya, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala Sang Pencipta itu.

My Thoughts:

Lily and James fled to Germany and lived as Muggles with their infant son Harry. In this world Harry was born on August 1st, not the infamous July 31st and Neville was the only possible prophecy child. When Harry was 8 years old his parents were killed by burglers, and Harry was sent to live with the Dursleys. Harry, who pretends to only speak German and refuses to sleep in the cupboard, does accidental magic at 10 and is picked up by WYRA, an organization that removes Muggleborns from their homes and adopts them out to Wizard families. Harry is too old to be adopted, instead he tests high enough on the magic scale to qualify for Hogwarts where he immediately comes to the notice of Voldemort. Voldemort finds himself both irritated and fascinated by Harry and makes Harry his protege, a tool to be used, an apprentice to mentor, and a child to love. This is an entirely platonic (though very intimate) relationship that is the core of the story.

Canon characters are present but wonderfully twisted. Luna is a goddess possessed werewolf. Hermione is the beloved, adopted sister of Draco (and Lucius’ despised mudblood daughter). Ron is a bitter and annoying prat of a Slytherin. (The author has excellent reasons for how Ron became a Slytherin and it really quite works.) Sirius & Remus are both werewolves and provide the gateway to a society that is dark, alien, and complicated. Harry’s relationship with Snape is complex and interesting as Snape functions as both a parental figure and also the left hand of Voldemort. This story has excellent world building and interesting characters. The terrible and wonderful world built by a sane, but broken Voldemort is both realistic and fantastical. Highly recommended. 5/5

Hace unos días apareció en la prensa una noticia, que pasó inadvertida, pero que pienso yo, dará que hablar en los próximos años. Os dejo el titular.

“Una terapia génica aumenta la fuerza y el tamaño de los músculos de los monos”.

Bien, puede que dicho así, suene a chino o a ciencia ficción, pero no han sido Kubrick, ni Confucio, quienes han trabajado durante años en el silencio de un laboratorio, para que un periodista, en su rutina, escribiera este aburrido y turbio titular. Como en este blog, no necesito ceñirme a un rótulo de neón, lo explicaré un poco más. Veamos.

Unos científicos del Instituto de Investigación del Hospital Infantil Nacional, en Columbus (USA), han conseguido aumentar la masa muscular en monos gracias a una nueva terapia génica, o sea, un tratamiento que altera un gen. Esos monos ganaron volumen y fuerza con el experimento.

Así, sin más, sin tener que pasarse horas y horas encerrados en el gimnasio, sin tener que pasar por el mal trago de escuchar las intelectuales y profundas conversaciones de los pensadores del bíceps, esos esforzados musculitos que no paran de mirarse al espejo, orgullosos, mientras levantan una y otra vez mancuernas y pesos.

¡Los simios se pusieron cachitas por arte de magia!

El estudio, publicado en la revista Science Translational Medicine, recurre a un gen humano, el de la folistatina. Esta práctica ya se había realizado anteriormente en ratones, ¿Qué sería de los laboratorios sin los pobres ratones? Sin embargo, no hay datos probados, que nos hagan pensar, que familiares directos de Mickey Mouse o del ratoncito Pérez hayan sido sacrificados por el bien de nuestra civilización. Lo digo por si algún Peter Pan se preocupa más de la cuenta al leer estas líneas. Tranquilo, puedes respirar, saca el puño de tu boca.

La miostatina (formalmente conocida como factor 8 de crecimiento y diferenciación) es un factor de crecimiento que limita el crecimiento del tejido muscular, por ejemplo, concentraciones elevadas de miostatina en un individuo provocan una disminución en el desarrollo normal de los músculos.

Los investigadores, dirigidos por Janaiah Kota, inyectaron un gen productor de la folistatina en los músculos de las piernas de monos sanos y observaron cómo estos músculos crecían milagrosamente. ¡Eureka! Debieron pensar…

Para comprobar si este aumento visible en el tamaño muscular se correspondía con una mayor fuerza, los investigadores anestesiaron a los monos y analizaron los músculos de las piernas expuestas, con un dispositivo que mide la fuerza. Y sí, los músculos eran más potentes y robustos.

Quince meses después, el crecimiento y la fuerza musculares eran aún evidentes en los animales. Además, no provocaron problemas observables en la estructura o funciones de otros órganos. Todo un éxito. Sin embargo, no hay que lanzar las campanas al vuelo, los autores de la investigación quieren ser cautos. En el estudio se utilizaron monos sanos y es probable que los resultados no sean extrapolables a pacientes con trastornos musculares. Los científicos señalan que serán necesarios más estudios antes de que la terapia con el gen de la folistatina pueda entrar en el ámbito clínico, en un gran experimento con personas. Aunque la investigación proporciona nuevos datos que constituyen un punto de partida muy interesante para futuras pruebas en humanos.

¿Qué usos podrían darle a este avance científico? ¿Qué beneficios aportará a la sociedad? ¿Cuánto estarán dispuestos a pagar por esta patente? ¿Para qué? ¿Quién decidirá? ¿Qué supone para una corporación o un gobierno tener ese poder? ¿Qué guiará  a esos altos ejecutivos, cuyas corbatas cuestan mil dólares, a tomar las cruciales decisiones que afectarán a tanta gente? ¿El dinero? ¿La política? ¿La sensibilidad? ¿El altruismo? ¿La nobleza?

¿En qué campos es más necesario un súper hombre? ¿Es necesario?

Un uso humano podría ser, y seguramente será, al parecer, tratar la esclerosis múltiple y la distrofia muscular, patologías que disminuyen de forma considerable la calidad de vida de los afectados. Ojalá.

Sin embargo, se me ocurren más de uno y de dos usos, no recomendables. Los ministros de defensa, deseosos de atacar siempre, a no ser que sean pacifistas, en cuyo caso, nadie entiende qué “leches” hacen sentados en ese sillón, opinarán sobre este asunto, cuando los diligentes funcionarios hagan llegar este informe a sus imponentes despachos. Y me temo, que encontrarán más de un empleo, aunque no se reduzcan las colas del paro…

Decía Shakespeare, que es excelente tener la fuerza de un gigante, pero es tiránico, usarla como un gigante. Hagamos caso al genio…

Por lo pronto, sospecho, que deberemos acostumbrarnos a ver cómo los récords de atletismo o de natación, bajan estrepitosamente…

La condición sexual de cada individuo depende, en una gran parte, de su dotación genética. Este hecho, conocido ya por la Ciencia, acaba de ser demostrado “in vivo” por un grupo de investigadores de la Universidad de Medicina y Odontología de Nueva Jersey en Stratford (Estados Unidos), que han conseguido la hazaña de convertir, alterando sólo dos genes, a un gusano nemátodo hembra en uno hermafrodita. El estudio se publica en el último número de la revista Science.

El gusano nematodo “Caenorhabditis elegans” tiene un curioso sistema de apareamiento que funciona tanto con individuos machos como hermafroditas que producen, según convenga en cada momento, tanto óvulos como esperma. Sin embargo, este sistema surge de progenitores que contaban sólo con individuos machos y hembras.

Los investigadores, dirigidos por el biólogo Chris Baldi, lograron convertir a varias hembras de gusanos nemátodos en hermafroditas a través de la modificación de dos genes, uno involucrado en la producción de espermatozoides y otro en su activación.

Evolución en dos pasos

Los científicos proponen que la evolución del sistema de apareamiento del “C. elegans” se produjo en dos pasos diferentes. Primero, una mutación en los mecanismos de determinación del sexo llevó a que individuos con dos cromosomas X produjeran espermatozoides y después una segunda mutación permitió que el esperma inmaduro se autoactivara.

El hallazgo puede tener importantes aplicaciones en numerosos campos de la Medicina y la investigación, ya que proporciona por primera vez una “herramienta” genética capaz de alterar las características sexuales (incluído el género) de un individuo.

Por supuesto, se trata sólo de un primer paso. Nadie ha conseguido todavía hacer algo parecido con animales más complejos.

Eugene Robinson—The most dreadful burden of the presidency — the power to send men and women to die for their country — seems to weigh heavily on Barack Obama these days. He went to Dover Air Force Base to salute the coffins of fallen troops. He gave a moving speech at the memorial service for victims of last week’s killings at Fort Hood. On Veterans Day, after the traditional wreath-laying at Arlington National Cemetery, he took an unscheduled walk among the rows of marble headstones in Section 60, where the dead from our two ongoing wars are buried.

As he decides whether to escalate the war in Afghanistan, Obama should keep these images in mind. Geopolitical calculation has human consequences. Sending more troops will mean more coffins arriving at Dover, more funerals at Arlington, more stress and hardship for military families. It would be wrong to demand such sacrifice in the absence of military goals that are clear, achievable and worthwhile.

And what goals in Afghanistan remotely satisfy those criteria?

The Washington Post reported Wednesday that the U.S. ambassador to Kabul, Karl Eikenberry, recently sent two classified cables to officials in Washington expressing what the newspaper described as “deep concerns” about sending more troops now.

Gen. Stanley McChrystal, chosen by Obama to lead U.S. forces in Afghanistan, has asked for perhaps 40,000 additional troops to carry out a counterinsurgency campaign. Armchair Napoleons in Washington, comfortably ensconced in their book-lined offices, insist that Obama must “listen to the generals.” But Eikenberry was a four-star general until Obama named him ambassador earlier this year. He commanded U.S. troops in Afghanistan in 2006-07. He needs to be heard as well.

Pola Tidur Dipengaruhi Gen

Para ilmuwan mengatakan mereka telah menemukan bukti lebih banyak bahwa kebiasaan bangun pagi dan bangun siang, hal itu terjadi disebabkan oleh gen perorangan.

Para peneliti mengatakan ke 6 anggota keluarga yang dipelajari itu karena bangun lebih awal juga menderita asma, depresi dan sakit kepala. Ilmuan percaya mungkin ada kaitan antara penyakit-penyakit tersebut dengan ganguan tidur.

Refleksiologi Tom Feroah dari Medical College of Winconsin di Milwaukee telah meneliti tikus-tikus yang hampir identik satu sama lainnya dan menyimpulkan berbagai perbedaan gen menyebabkan pola tidur yang berbeda.

Professor Feroah mengatakan tak mengherankan kalau orang-orang yang menderita ganguan tidur menderita berbagai penyakit. Ia mengatakan ritme Circadian mengatur rangkaian jam-jam kecil yang terdapat dalam tiap sel, yang akhirnya mengatur sistim kekebalan, pengaturan suhu, hormon dan fungsi-fungsi otak otak.

Para peneliti berharap menemukan gen tidur lebih banyak. Studi laboratorium sejauh ini menunjukkan perubahan kecil pada gen CK1 Delta menenangkan kegiatan protein yang kelihatannya menggangu tidur. Ini mungkin kabar baik bagi orang yang tidak bisa memperoleh tidur malam yang baik.
