Hi,

As you may know I’ve created a Quotes and Notes section which collects random ideas I have and cool quotes I pick up around the place. Well I’ve recently just added a Writing and Creativity section and uploaded my first batch of these online.

I’ve also decided to create a Links page with collections of inspirational videos and web pages that I think fall into the ‘want-to-collect-and-put-them-somewhere’ category, so it might as well be here and public in case anyone else is interested.

The Links page is also on the right hand side of this blog.

…and just whilst I’m here. I’ve recently sent a fictional submission to Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine so hopefully should hear something back in the next month or so.

A post-Thanksgiving thought in ‘inkless and thankful’ which I categorized as ‘gem;’ if there is one

A post-Thanksgiving thought in ‘inkless and thankful’ which I categorized as ‘gem;’ if there is one ‘valid’ reason for getting tattooed, it must be so all the people against body modification could write and whine about it! Personally, I’m thankful for having gotten as many tattoos as I have to date and I’ll be thankful if I get many more.

Tattoos and good cause again in another ‘Ink, not Mink’ ad (Linkin Park singer this time) and an interesting initiative from the UK based Ultimate Holding Company: the Extinked Project.

‘Slightly’ different is, of course, Wim Delvoye’s project and here another article about him, just to remind people out there of him.

‘Tattoos are no lost art’ discusses sports and tattoos again – we’ve already heard all about it. And even if many athletes get inked, many sports fans do so as well; here a Polish gallery of ‘football fans and their tattoos.’

Athletes, actors and musicians have done quite a lot to change the bad image of tattoos; people in the West are aware of that. In Vietnam the process has just begun: ‘celebrities break tattoo taboo.’

A nice article from Germany about the oldest tattoo shop in the country shows us quite well the history of tattooing in Europe and a few old-timers covered in ink. Worth checking out!

Eight players will experience the pride of pulling on a Great Britain shirt for the first time next

Eight players will experience the pride of pulling on a Great Britain shirt for the first time next month after Great Britain Head Coach Danny Kerry announced his 18-athlete squad for December’s five game test series against Argentina in Salta.

Included among the eight GB debutants are four Leicester players: Gemma Darrington, Katie Long, Hannah Macleod and Laura Unsworth. Also due to make a first appearance are Kirsty Mackay, Reading’s Emily Maguire, Natalie Seymour of Canterbury, and Slough’s Nicola White. For Mackay, the Bowdon Hightown goalkeeper, an appearance in South America would mark her full international debut as she has yet to play for England at senior level.

The series will also mark the return of Crista Cullen to the international fold, the international centurion having taken a year out after the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games where she helped Great Britain to a sixth place finish.

Also included in the squad are Helen Richardson and Susie Gilbert who were shortlisted for World Player of the Year and World Young Player of the Year respectively on Wednesday afternoon by the International Hockey Federation (FIH).

Speaking as he announced his squad, Kerry said: “This is a good opportunity for us on a number of levels. It is the earliest a GB squad has ever assembled for such a test series during an Olympic cycle and we look forward to developing a number of parts of our game playing against the World’s current number two side.

“We welcome back the presence of Crista Cullen while for a number of the younger members of the squad, such as Emily Maguire, the series will offer them further exposure to top flight hockey and a first taste of the technical skills of ‘Las Leonas’.”

In October, the squad began its Centralised Training Programme, with the coaches and athletes benefitting from more contact time as Kerry explains: “As part of our preparations for London 2012 the group has been training together on a weekly basis at Bisham Abbey. Even though it is early days in the programme there are some very good signs of gains being made and we look forward to putting those into practice against Argentina.

“Playing in Argentina is one of the most enjoyable experiences of an international career. The crowds are several thousand in number, with an amazing carnival atmosphere and I’m certain the players will benefit immensely from the occasion.”

Running from 12-18 December, the women’s series is being held to coincide with the BDO Champion’s Challenge I, an International Hockey Federation (FIH) event for the men’s teams ranked between 7th and 15th in the world.

SPD-Bundestagsmitglied Dieter Wiefelspütz will illegale Ausländer begünstigen

Nebenklägerin Alev S. will nicht gegen ihren Ex aussagen.

Ganz anders klingt, was Alev S. dem Vernehmungsrichter Anfang März erzählte.

By Frank Franklyn – Futuristic Media Network

Hollywood actress (and Bollywood too) Claudia Ciesla was awarded the prestigious Karmaveer Puraskaar Award by iCongo - for her involvement in social work on 26th November. iCongo is the confederation of NGOs and the apex body representing major NGOs in India and the Khemka Foundation with partners like TISS, BCCI, NASSCOM, etc.

Last year Kajol was the recipient of the same award and Claudia Ciesla joins the elite group of Bollywood personalities including Rahul Bose, to be recognised for their contribution to society and their efforts to “make a change”. The award was accepted on her behalf by her spokesperson and manager in India, Flynn Remedios as Claudia Ciesla is locked up in the Bigg Boss house – a very popular reality show on the GEC Colours.

Speaking to media immediately after the award ceremony at Delhi on Thursday, Claudia Ciesla’s manager Flynn Remedios thanked iCongo representatives Meenu Chopra and Jeroninio Almedia and Rajeev Sharma of Khushii for ensuring that Claudia Ciesla’s humanitarian work in India didn’t go unnoticed. “As a Bollywood actress, Claudia Ciesla is often in the news for her alleged linkups and hot photos. While linkups, red hot photos and other gossip are all part and parcel of Bollywood, Claudia Ciesla is a woman with a golden heart. She has been ceaselessly working for the poor and downtrodden in India for the last six months and has involved herself in fund raising, charity shows, resource mobilisation spending hours interacting with the under privileged, street children, orphans and destitute women. While it would incorrect to even try to compare Claudia Ciesla to Mother Teresa, in all humility I will venture to say that Claudia Ciesla is probably another Mother Teresa in the making,” said Flynn Remedios.

The Karmaveer Puraskaar, is iCONGO’s National People’s Award for Social Justice and Action that honours concerned citizens who have been and led the change they wanted. In the past, Ad guru and social activist Alyque Padamsee , Dr Leo Rebello, Rahul Bose, Remo Fernandes, M S Swaminathan (Father of the Green Revolution in India) have been recipients of the Karmaveer Puraskaar.

Speaking about the award, Rajeev Sharma – Director Resource Mobilisation, Khushii said, “Claudia Ciesla has willingly supported the cause served by Khushii, especially its remedial education programme for the underprivileged children called “Shikshaantra” in many complementing ways, be it participating in a recent fashion charity event (fundraiser) with a complete waiver of fees to meeting and interacting with the less privileged children that study in the Shikshaantra schools at Sangam Vihar, New Delhi. Her compassion and humanitarianism shone through especially when she met and talked with the beneficiaries, forging a bond of mutual respect and affection.

Claudia has also offered to serve as an ambassador of KHUSHII and Europe and beyond, advocating the cause to a wider audience. Her commitment and passion for education and cause of the underprivileged goes beyond the lines caste, country and creed. I hope that as she becomes more successful in life her contribution to the social cause will enhance in the same proportion. And hence I believe that her winning this award will encourage others as well to come forward and contribute towards the betterment of the society.”

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi briefed lefty bloggers on the need for job creation and war fundin

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi briefed lefty bloggers on the need for job creation and war funding.

From the Politico

Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s weekly tele-chat with liberal bloggers is usually a low-news affair, but Tuesday’s pre-Thanksgiving installment had the speaker throwing down the gauntlet all over the place — especially on the need for job creation.

The speaker — beset by nasty poll data showing congressional Democrats 7 points down in the generic midterm ballot — is acutely aware of the need to turn the economy around, even if it means punting on deficit reduction, a cornerstone of the Obama administration’s post-health-reform agenda.

And she claims the economy can “absorb” a larger deficit if it means more jobs — a turn of phrase coming to a GOP attack ad near you.

IT’S THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE, STUPID. Unveiling a strategy likely to define the Democratic ’10 agenda, Pelosi evoked the specter of the 1937-1938 “Roosevelt Recession,” which many historians believe resulted from too quick a pullback in New Deal spending. The speaker, via Think Progress:

“We’re never going to decrease the deficit until we create jobs, bring revenue into the Treasury, stimulate the economy so we have growth. We have to shed any weakness that anybody may have about not wanting to be confrontational on this subject for fear that we’d be labeled not sensitive to the deficit. … The American people have an anger about the growth of the deficit because they’re not getting anything for it. … So if somebody has the idea that the percentage of GDP of what or national debt is will go up a bit, but they will now — and their neighbors and their children — will have jobs, I think they could absorb that.”

She added: “If we pull our punch, as they did in the mid-’30s, we shouldn’t be surprised if history repeats itself.”

PAY-FOR WAR. Pelosi was far more fiscally conservative when it came to Afghanistan, expressing sympathy with congressional liberals, including Appropriations Committee Chairman Dave Obey (D-Wis.), who thinks war funding should be subject to Blue Doggish “pay-for” rules.

“I think we have to look at that war with a green eyeshade on,” Pelosi (D-Calif.) told the lefty bloggers, according to HuffPo’s Ryan Grim. “There is unrest in our caucus about: Can we afford this war?”

Pelosi qualified her remarks by noting that cost is not the top concern. “I think the American people believe that if it’s something that’s in our national security interest,” she said, the investment is worth it.

But it still has to be paid for, she said. “Everything else has to be paid for. It must be fiscally sound. We have to hold it to the same standard, as well.”

Despite Pelosi’s statements on job creation all the Democrats have managed to do so far is spend billions on job creation with no improvement in the unemployment rate while increasing the deficit. In the early stages of the Obama administration it was fashionable to blame president Bush for our economic situation but the blame must clearly lie at the feet of the Democrats who have done nothing but throw money at the problem to no avail.

In the meantime they are still spending money like mad on earmarks despite the president’s pledge to eliminate them and haggling over how to fund our war efforts.

The hope now is that there will be a change in 2010.

Report back from the Olympic resistance in Vancouver

The 2010 Olympics are over, and we’re told that everything is back to normal. Wrong. Vancouver will never be the same.

Never mind what the news jockeys said about the thrilling celebration of our nation’s proud heritage, showcasing our city, hosting the admiring elite of the world, promoting our youth, and attracting new business and tourism. It’s all bullshit. For us here at ground zero, the Olympics turned the Lower Mainland into a nightmare landscape of security zones, armed troops, and police traps. And guess what? The nightmare didn’t end when the circus left town.

The past two months have seen chaos and repression so secret that we’re still trying to piece together the whole story. It’s ironic, because we’ve been trying to expose this sort of abuse for years – part of the campaign to keep our city livable, support human rights and end police persecution of everyone who’s poor, native, or critical of government priorities. When we witnessed what was happening with the latest round of evictions and brutality, we felt compelled to get the story out. Then, of course, we became targets too.

Even after all the discussions and predictions, we weren’t prepared for the scale of the crackdown. It went like this: dozens of arrests the week before the Games started, forced removal of homeless people for the duration, indigenous people targeted and independent journalists singled out – as many as they could get their hands on, anyway. Before the Olympics even started, a bunch of us were pre-emptively – arbitrarily, illegally – detained under the new security orders. Doors were kicked in, cameras, videos, and computers were seized, and people were taken away and disappeared. Without so much as a peep from the major newspapers, TV, and radio stations.

And yet, we pulled ourselves together and carried on. That’s what we need to do now – seize the moment, hang on to our experiences and analyze what happened, if only to bring some perspective to the chaos. Let’s start with the successes.

The huge throngs of people at the public protests in and around the “free speech cage” were amazing to behold. Apparently the Homes Not Games message hit a nerve. That nerve was pretty sore already after the bank collapses and thousands of layoffs, plus the revelations about secret budgets, high-profile scandals, more evictions, and, of course, the ever-swelling Olympic deficit that our children will still be paying off in thirty years. Then came the massive, never-ending traffic gridlock and the troops in the streets. The hubris of it all added up to a whole lot of pissed-off citizens. So naturally, the protests spilled over into the streets.

Not just protests, either. Months of planning focused on empowering people to start building the kind of society we need. Like Food Not Bombs, the Homes Not Games actions were organized by people who found ways to fill those needs themselves, rather than waiting around hoping the authorities would give a hand-out. These decentralized non-organizations stymied the police – with no headquarters for them to raid and no leaders to arrest, they didn’t know how to stop the movement. Several individuals in the network got busted the week before the Games, but they had the good sense to keep their mouths shut about their fellow activists.

The affinity groups were also tight – people took their safety and security very seriously. The scene was so heavy that anyone who was not 100% committed to the goal stayed home. After the first wave of raids and arrests, no one needed a reminder of what was at stake.

The folks who set up the legal defense fund in advance of the Olympics deserve a huge shout-out, along with the lawyers who are working for free or for reduced rates. Hundreds of people are facing charges – anti-poverty activists, indigenous people, tree huggers, indy journalists, and dozens more who were probably just in the wrong place at the wrong time. The people who went missing have been found, some of them in jails fifty or a hundred miles away. Some might get time served or a few weeks if convicted, others are looking at “terrorism enhancements” of many years behind bars, even though there was clearly no intention to hurt anyone.

The civil liberties advocates are hoping to push back the trend of police brutality and Charter rights violations. The criminal trials will be going on for months, and believe me, they’re educational (and open to the public!)

The media collectives and solo journalists deserve awards for extreme bravery in documenting dozens of cases of police attacks and human rights abuses with hundreds of hours of video – and getting away with the footage! Of course, the major media didn’t run those videos, but the web streams went around the world to millions of viewers. And the hot new “instant documentary” is coming any day now – the video posse is working round the clock putting it together. There’s dozens of clips online already, and a whole pile of new material that the cops are really going to hate – especially when the lawyers show the evidence to the judge and get our friends’ charges dropped.

We learned some things about playing to our strengths and their weaknesses. We outwitted the enemy a couple times. We outran them too. We are quicker, smarter, and more versatile than the crowd-control units. We know the terrain. We can switch to Plan B in an instant. They need orders. They’re weighed down by riot shields and command structures. Except when they get wound up in their adrenaline and testosterone frenzy, and start beating on people at random. All I can say is thank god for the street medics.

The street medics are fucking heroes. They waded into clouds of tear gas to help people who were blinded and panicked and disoriented and walked them out of there. They patched people up in the middle of the night and kept it quiet. Of course, a lot of people who were near the front lines – including the medics! – are still nursing injuries and pepper-spray after-effects. Plus, we are all suffering from “post traumatic activist stress disorder” – weeks later, some folks are still traumatized and in shock. No one expects this shit to happen to them. But people are taking care of each other and reaching out to each other.

The extreme level of police coercion stunned everyone. Even long-time activists who felt psychologically prepared for police violence told me how surreal it felt, suddenly finding themselves looking down a line of automatic weapons aimed at their heads and robocops barking incomprehensible orders. Everything slows way down and gets very bright and sharp. Impossible to forget, even if you want to. Many of our comrades from the past few weeks won’t be returning to the movement – they’re burned out.

Our public events were infiltrated by police informants and many of us were monitored for months before the Games. The cops pulled all kinds of petty stunts – faking people’s identities online, sending messages to try and start conflicts, playing on the divisions within the group like race and class and gender. Fortunately, it seems like the various affinity groups were quick to catch on, although a few out there are probably still figuring it out.

Surveillance cameras and face-recognition software made it easy for the cops to look out for possible “domestic threats.” (Threats to what? We’d like to know!) They watched for certain individuals and pounced on them when they approached the security perimeters. Obviously, you can fool the software with a bandanna, but they also arrested anyone with their face covered.

We weren’t expecting the total blackout on dissent for the duration of the Games, or the crushing media backlash after the party ended and the guests went home. Obviously we didn’t think corporate Olympic sponsors would give indy journalists free air time – but we thought at least we’d have access to our own blogs and independent media sites! A lot of those sites suddenly went off-line (or off-limits) in early February. A lot of cell phones stopped working, and some folks swore they were being recorded. We had to keep figuring out ways to work around these obstacles.

The radicals were isolated, thanks in part to intimidation and pressure on our more moderate allies. That was no surprise – we figured the mainstream groups would cave if the authorities leaned on them, and that’s what happened. They cooperated with the detectives and cut their ties with us. So we were basically left out in the cold, surrounded by hostile forces. Several of our demonstrations were outnumbered by the pro-Olympics cheerleaders and sports fans; there were lots of vocal threats and even a few violent incidents as they lashed out at the groups of peaceful protestors.

By the time it was over, there was a backlash from all sides against the people who were trying, against all odds, to get a message out to the world, to speak to the conscience of a nation against racism and brutality and homelessness and injustice.

And we won. We got the message out, and we all came together, and that was what they really feared, above all. Not just that we would loudly and publicly dissent for the world to see, but that we might actually join forces and work for common goals, like hastening the fall of this corrupt and unjust system.

It started for me when one of us asked – what sort of position do we want to be in, after the Games? How do we survive, evade, and resist the occupation? The TV cameras have packed up and left. The soldiers are back at their bases. We’re still here. What next?
